Traveling to the mainland for the Thanksgiving holiday, maybe even Miami International? Travelers need to know that the Dolphin Expressway has a new right-lane exit flyover ramp to MIA/northbound NW 42nd Avenue (LeJeune Road). Motorists now traveling east on the SR836 to catch a flight at MIA can stay safely in the far-right hand travel lane to access the new right lane exit ramp, which has been configured to begin more than a halfmile sooner than the old left-lane exit.

o long as there’s a need, Marine Toys for Tots, its coordinator, Ret. GySgt. Louis Slagle, and those who make the program go won’t stop giving to Monroe County’s children.

Last week, four members dropped

by Blackwater Siren in Key Largo to donate a mountain bike to Eileen Oseguera. Her mother, Ingrid, received the bike when she began her shift Monday.

“She’s going to be so happy,” Ingrid said.

Fulfilling Monroe County children’s toy lists isn’t just a holiday occurrence.

It goes on year-round. Slagle, a retired Marine who’s been with Toys for Tots for many years, says all it takes is one toy.

“As long as a need exists, I’m going to keep giving,” Slagle said. “That’s the way I do it. All it takes is one toy to make a kid’s day.”

Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is the fund raising, funding and support organization for the U S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.

Donation boxes are set up from Key Largo to Key West, said Kim Stevenson, who noted how the Keys community rallies behind Toys for Tots.

“This is the year we’re really going to blow it out of the water,” he said.

“We’re going to go to grade schools from Key Largo to Key West and take Christmas to the school.”

The foundation has supported Toys for Tots since 1991.The mission of Toys for Tots is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute them as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Last year, Toys for Tots gathered 35,000 toys in Monroe County. To date, 548 million toys have been distributed to 251 million children in the country.

n eight days, the time will come for men to open up the bathroom cupboard, take out the trimmer or razor and shaving cream and do away with their scraggly looks. It’s the end of “No Shave November,” a month-long endeavor during which participants go without shaving and grooming to raise awareness about cancer.

I’ve done “No Shave November” for many years now. I’ve also let it slide into December. And while my beard grows and gets pretty bushy, it’s not one that appears like those masterpieces that you might see during beard contests in Portland, Oregon. One thing’s for sure though: Without my beard, I’d have the look of a young high school kid.

With the month of no shaving drawing to a gradual close, I asked some people to complete this sentence:

I COULD GO A MONTH WITHOUT… For Carter Coussens, eating any type of candy or junk foods is something he’d go without. “I would do this to help cleanse my body,” he said. “After a while, I think that it would lend more natural energy and allow me to have greater attention span.”

Conner Martin says he could do without several things for a month.“I could probably go without using money on anything,” he said. “And also doing without fast food and sweets and watching TV.”

A SPECIAL DAY Boy with cancer becomes firefighter JIM McCARTHY

ith his firefighter uniform on, 7-year-old Jesse Santerre was all smiles as his day with comrades at Station 21 began Saturday morning.

“This is awesome,” Santerre said as he walked around the station. “I’m a firefighter.”

Santerre, who’s battling cancer, had his dream come true as he stopped by the fire station to enjoy a day full of fun as a firefighter.

He began his day by completing his firefighter physical agility test. According to Fire Chief Terry Abel, Jesse was phenomenal at it.

“He did some practical skills putting out some fires with our training house,” Abel said. “Then he met all the firefighters, took his oath and got badged and pinned and all that good stuff.”

Santerre had the opportunity to hop in the ladder truck for some area familiarization. He later went with firefighters to Robbie’s where they fed tarpon. They also went to Mangrove Mike’s and Theater of the Sea. “We’re going to have a great time in the community,” Abel said.

“It’s definitely a pleasure to do this with Jesse.”

Santerre and family spent the night Saturday before finishing off their day Sunday with firefighters.

Lauren Taylor would go without two things in particular. “Eating fast food or making my bed for a month,” she said.

Shelby Walker says she could go without something she does quite a bit. “I can go for a month without going on the boat,” she said. “I go boating quite a bit, so this would be difficult for me.”

ifteen girls who make up Coral Shores’ varsity weightlifting team entered their second meet versus Gulliver and Marathon last week.

It’s the Lady Canes’ inaugural season, and coach Erin King – an alumna herself – is thrilled to see how engaged and excited the girls are as they begin to take up the sport competitively. The girls had their first meet in Marathon on Nov. 1, and it went quite well according to Kelly.

“They are committed and are learning,” she said. “They’ve been doing phenomenal and they’re eager to learn.”

The idea for a weightlifting team at the varsity level was sparked from King and Aaron Hamilton, physical education teacher at Coral Shores. Hamilton, who runs CrossFit Key Largo, and King, who coaches CrossFit on the side, felt weightlifting was missing at the high school level. King said she was quite pleased to see 15 girls signing up.

“It was neat to see,” she said. “I’m hoping it grows. I see it growing.”

Coral Shores Athletic Director Rich Russell says any addition to the school’s athletic program is a major plus. Russell said adding weightlifting to the boys and girls sports program was something they batted around for a year or two.

“There seems to be significant interest,” Russell said. “Marathon and Key West are now competing, and we can compete for county championships.”

Russell said athletes participating in weightlifting are also able to play another sport concurrently. Along with the girls, the boys will also have a weightlifting team. Their season will commence in the spring.

“We’ve had a number of coaches say absolutely they will support their athletes,” he said. “The idea of weight training for the serious athletes is something they do 52 weeks a year anyway.”

King said weightlifting is something girls can take with them beyond their high school years. While she’s learning every day as coach, King said she’s getting a lot of joy out of it. King coaches the girls alongside her husband, Brandon.

“This is a great opportunity for students and athletes,” she said. “It’s a different type of sport and it’s different than any I’ve ever coached. I think it’s unique with coaching: We’re learning so much ourselves. I get to see these girls not only lift weights, but encourage each other.”

WATER INSPIRES ARTIST Pasta set for live performance at Ocean Fest JIM McCARTHY

H

e gravitated toward the water tanks. His attention was drawn to the seaside. Water always seemed to be Italianborn marine artist Pasta Pantaleo’s mantra in life.

Pasta is set to perform onstage during Mote’s Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Founders Park. His creation will be auctioned off during the event. Pasta says he’s looking forward to the upcoming inaugural festival.

“I think the word ‘ocean’ in Ocean Fest says it all for me. It’s everything,” he said. “The science and the stewardship of the oceans are probably the next biggest thing we have to worry about.”

For Pasta, the sea represented an escape from his urban life in an Italian Brooklyn neighborhood during his teenage years. He eventually moved with his family to South Florida. There, he became a world-class airbrush artist who did custom paint jobs for cars.

In 2001, Pasta entered a new realm as he created a canvas painting for Jamie Bunn of Bluewater Movements for his professional fishing tournament series. His first painting, known as “Everybody is Gonna Be There,” was displayed on fishing posters, and it struck the attention of the public so much that they wondered who did it.

“The mystery and the beauty of the water always seemed to be a cool factor for me,” Pasta told the Weekly during a recent interview. “I made a life’s work to try and live that out, and it actually ended up happening. I’m pretty blessed.”

Pasta says it feels like he’s been in the Keys since the beginning. He spent his first night in the Keys in 1970 in a house behind his gallery at 81599 Old Hwy. At age 12, he went fishing with a local Conch character in Barracuda Al.

A SINGER-SONGWRITER STYLE Pasta works in various styles and disciplines. He says he’ll go from abstract impressionism and pop art to some realism and many different palettes. When people ask him about his styles, he says he’s more like a singersongwriter.

“I’ve always coined myself as that as far as painting goes, as opposed to someone who’s stuck on one thing,” he said. “If you listen to Tom Petty or the Beatles, they all experimented. They all tried different things. They all kept growing and growing. They just didn’t rely on their hit to make a living. I think that’s a true art.”

Pasta says living as an artist in Islamorada fits as much as the art fits his brain waves and thought process.

“This is my Italian fishing village. I was born in one,” he said. “It is the next best thing for me. To me this is like it.”

Pasta says he’s beginning to see things in a way he’s never seen before.

At 60, he says he’s just now starting to see paintings he’s looking forward to.

A NEW WAVE: A NEW VIBE Pasta says he finds himself enjoying the younger generation more as he peers into a new wave of creativity. Sitting back and watching the artists and the musicians, he says the osmosis of the island takes young kids and gives them enough creativity.

“A lot of musicians who play, the youth get to see they’re doing it for a living,” he said. “They get to see me making a living and the guitarist make a living.”

Pasta says he’s proud of the neighborhood’s transformation. He also gave a shout-out to one of his comrades in guitarist Dave Feder.

“He crosses over besides just music of what artists and lifestyle live like, which I practice as much as I can,” Pasta said. “Dave’s a conduit to the community. We’ve always had a strong connection without hanging out together.”

“When it comes to any of these events that are true to what we’re trying to do out in the ocean, for our wildlife right down to our water quality, it’s at a critical level, I think,” he said.

ommunity members came out in droves Sunday to get a Thanksgiving dinner in before the big feast on Thursday.

San Pedro Catholic Church, located at MM 89.5 bayside, hosted the turkey dinner Sunday evening for a period of three hours. The cooks stayed busy as a large contingent came out. Principal recognized Mangel gets state award

elly Mangel has been named winner of a 2018 Florida Charter Schools Champions Award at the recent Florida Charter School Conference in Orlando. She is principal at Treasure Village Montessori in Islamorada.

Mangel won the Champions Award in the category of charter school leader. The award was one of 21 presented by the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS), the leading charter school membership association in the state.

Mangel was nominated for the award by office manager Amanda Zischka, who said, “She uses the most amazing techniques to help motivate students, validate them and reinforce love for themselves and their surroundings.”

For the seventh consecutive year, FCPCS received nominations in several categories, including charter school board members, charter school leaders, charter school teachers, charter school pioneers and charter school preferred partners. Winners received their awards at an evening awards reception and presentation.

“Each year, we honor exemplary teachers, school leaders, governing board members and pioneers who represent the very best in the Florida charter school movement,” said Robert Haag, FCPCS President. “This year, we received more nominations than ever.”

SHOPPING MEETS HISTORY Museum Store Sunday at Diving Museum

he History of Diving Museum invites holiday shoppers to shop for a cause on “Museum Store Sunday,” set for Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This annual international campaign, organized by the Museum Store Association, is a global event in which shoppers can “Be A Patron” by supporting museums and their missions while enjoying special events and promotions. More than 900 museums — from three continents, 10 countries, and all 50 U.S. states — will participate this year.

At the History of Diving Museum Store, the first 25 shoppers will receive a free gift on Museum Store Sunday. Special discounts will include 25 percent off select items throughout the store, and museum members can take 25 percent off an item of their choice. All proceeds from purchases support the History of Diving Museum and its education and outreach programs.

Families are invited to come meet Diving Santa in the library for a photo opportunity from 1 to 3 p.m. Santa’s

elves will be helping with craft activities and reading children’s books to the kids. The 1 p.m. reading will be geared toward preschoolers and kingergartners, while the 2 p.m. reading will be for first- through fifth-graders.

new member enters the Islamorada Village Council while the other four return.

Council will convene on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Founders Park Community Center.

Proceedings will begin with the swearing in of newly elected officials by Monroe County Judge Sharon Hamilton.

Of the five seats up for election, two were contested. The winners of those races were Ken Davis and incumbent Cheryl Meads. Deb Gillis, Jim Mooney and Mike Forester all went unopposed as they return for another term. Elections of mayor and vice mayor will follow.

Several resolutions will be considered, including approval of an agreement with BeeFree for ridesharing services within the village. Council members will also consider a resolution to approve a community aesthetic features application for a public art project.

COMFORT Mrs. Mac’s a staple since 1976

H

omestyle cooking in a Key-easy atmosphere is the vibe coming out of the “Original” Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen in Key Largo.

Originally founded by Jeff McFarland in 1976, the establishment’s name is in honor of his mother and her recipes. The building, which dates to 1947, was one of a few places in the Keys where people could get a bite to eat as Grainger’s Gulfside Inn. In 1987, McFarland hired Angie Wittke, now the owner, as a cook.

Shortly afterward, Angie’s sister Paula was invited to work with them. In 1988, Mrs. Mac’s was purchased by the sisters as McFarland moved to Vero Beach, where he has Mrs. Mac’s Filling Station restaurant.

Those entering through the doors of the small diner get a hometown feel. As for the food, Wittke said there’s a comfort element to it.

“We serve the local seafood that we get delivered daily,” she said. “I’m from Iowa, so I like good meats, so we’re certified angus beef for all of our fresh meats, steaks and prime rib.”

The Original Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Patrons have a wide selection of options to choose for breakfast.

One hot menu item is The “Mac” Attack, which comes with two slices of French toast, two eggs, two strips of bacon, two sausage links and homemade hash brown casserole.

For lunch, patrons can order a selection of salads, homemade soups, seafood baskets, burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches. For dinner, try the award-winning “Konk” chowder and favorites such as the

Caribbean Style Crab Cakes, Churrasco Steak salad or Yellowfin Tuna, to name a few. Also on the menu are awardwinning, delightful desserts. Wittke said food offered at Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen may not be fancy, but it’s “good and whole.”

“We make our salad dressing and sauces. We don’t use things out of the package,” she said. “We still make our hamburgers from fresh ground beef.”

With its original location at 99336 Overseas Highway, Mrs. Mac’s has a second location a half-mile south in the median. Wittke bought the property in 2011 to allow more people to enjoy the food. It’s known as Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen II. Patrons can frequent the establishment for lunch and dinner.

“We were full all the time and a lot of the locals were like ‘we couldn’t get in any more,’” she said. “I said ‘What the heck … why not … let’s try it.’ Everybody thought we were crazy. I said I’m going for it.”

While there are many choices to eat, Wittke said she’s thankful for those who visit and continue to come through the doors of her restaurants.

Wittke said it’s a family atmosphere where returning customers become family.

“I’ve been here over 30 years now, so we see lots of generations of families grow and build,” she said.

he Tropical Plant Company was awarded the first ever agricultural land grant by Congress on February 6, 1840. It consisted of 36 square miles or just over 23,000 acres. The company’s primary holders were Dr. Henry Perrine, Charles Howe, and Key West’s Judge James Webb. The purpose of the grant was “the establishment of a Botanical Garden and nursery for acclimating tropical plants, fruits, and flowers.” Perrine had spent years as a U.S. consul at Campeche, Yucatan, collecting and cataloging samples. He sent cases of specimens to John Dubose, keeper at the Cape Florida Lighthouse, and Charles Howe at Indian Key. Included in the 72 plants he introduced to South Florida was agave sisalana, a commercial plant that could be harvested for its hemp.

Perrine also introduced the Mexican or Key lime. After Perrine was killed in the Seminole attack on Indian Key on Aug. 7, 1840, the company failed to come to fruition.

The Spanish plate fleet of 1733 wrecked in a violent hurricane along 80 miles of the Florida Keys. With the discovery of the first shipwreck in the late 1940s and the growth of scuba diving in the 1950s and ‘60s enabling treasure hunters to locate most of the rest of the fleet, these wrecks suffered from haphazard digging and the loss of much information. Today, these shipwrecks are among the oldest artificial reefs in the Keys. This presentation describes a State of Florida project to record and interpret the 1733 fleet wrecks that resulted in the production of a booklet and website devoted to telling the story of the fleet disaster and to promoting the archaeological importance of the sunken ships as tangible remains of our maritime heritage.

Denis Nerney, VFW district 5 officer from Homestead, said he was asked to come down and check out the post. He said there’s now a better establishment for veterans to bring their families.

“These VFW clubs through time have been doing OK, but basically we’re all getting older,” Nerney said.

“There’s a young veteran out there who probably doesn’t smoke, but not only that, who wants a better place for his family to come.”

John Donnelly, trustee at the post, said he couldn’t be more pleased with what’s happened. He said it’s coming out of the dark ages to the 21st century.

“It’s an excellent combination and coordination of so many generous people,” he said. There were volunteers and businesses and those who gave money. It was really a group effort. Without people in the community who stood up, we wouldn’t have succeeded.”

eterans and patrons walking through the doors of VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo can expect a reinvigorated look and a family-friendly atmosphere.

With help from the community and the hard work put forth by several, there’s a new, fresh feel for the post that once fell into decline before closing its doors. Jason Kendall, retired Marine major, and fellow veterans took ownership. From there, cleanup and renovation commenced.

On Saturday, the community came together for a grand opening of the post and Arthur’s Island Restaurant at The Post. Kendall said the post wouldn’t be what it is today without the community’s support and the work by volunteers.

Arianna Nesbitt is the executive director of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, not to be confused with the Healthy Start program initiative that’s offered by the Monroe County State Department of Health, or the fact that the first administers the second. Confused?

Yes, well … “I wish I could have picked another name, but …” said Arianna Nesbitt. But it’s good training for explaining her non-profit’s complicated role in helping the Keys community of children and parents.

It starts here: To bring babies into the world as healthy as possible, to give them the best start. “Healthy babies mean amazing families with phenomenal kids,” she said.

It all began 13 years ago when Nesbitt returned to the Keys from Texas (she was formerly heavily involved with the local Boys and Girls Club) to head the effort.

Armed with a master’s degree in public service administration, and the help of one part-time employee, she has grown the program immensely. It offers four core programs, administered by seven employees and one intern. And, it’s set to add even more.

Six years ago, she was a single lady.

Now, she has four foster children in the nest, and two who have already flown away.

What is the main focus of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition? You know … some days I think it’s about visiting expecting parents or parents, and telling them it’s all going to be okay. Some have very wide networks of support, and others who just moved here have no one. There are surprises, and accidents and emergencies, too. And not all families are

biological — we help families of adopted children, surrogate children. The Keys is surprisingly rural and sometimes connecting all the services is difficult.

What are the core services of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition? There are four. Healthy Start is about care coordination, finding a physician, support, and attending to the family’s needs.

Healthy Babies is about pre-natal care and finding a medical “home” for mom and baby. We accomplish much of this through medical partnerships with local obstetricians, pediatricians and mental health counselors. Our Keys to Kids Safety program covers everything from a safe home (making sure poisonous cleaners are out of reach) to car seats, bicycle helmets, and education like CPR classes. The Keys to Kids Growing program is about child development and covers the “tot time” class for fine motor skills and “wiggles and giggles” or active recreation with partners like local children’s gymnastic instructors.

What else? There’s also a lactation program in development that helps women feed their babies comfortably. Breast feeding is supposed to be easy, but it’s not really. Our newest initiative is to come up with a staff of experienced labor coaches and doulas to help moms as they deliver and begin their parenting journey.

Can you share a ‘success’ story with us? There was one expectant mother who didn’t feel good and we got her to the local midwife who uncovered a surprise and serious medical condition. She was flown out, the baby was born with a genetic heart condition and needed surgery. Our team immediately flew into action — get the dad to the mainland, stay in constant contact, get the monitors and machines they needed when they got home. And when the mom and baby needed follow up doctor visits on the mainland — this was before Uber — we called in the Five Sixes taxi company and gave the driver a huge itinerary with instructions to stay with the mom and baby all day. That was years ago. The little girl is in kindergarten now. Her mom still brings us banana bread but I feel like it should be the other way around; she did all the work!

How do you find funding? One of the ways is though private donation. There are many successful business owners in the Keys that were once Healthy Start clients.

They still remember what it’s like to need something. I call them, explain the situation, and they write a check. This community is so giving.

I love my job.

Which TV, movie, or superhero character is your alter ego? Elizabeth McCord of “Madam Secretary.” (But her kids compare her to Sandra Bullock’s character in “The Blind Side.”)

What are the ages of your foster children? In the house right now, I have a 10-year-old, two 14-yearolds, a 16-year-old and an 18-yearold getting ready to leave for Gainesville. My 23-year-old foster daughter is living independently.

She still calls me and asks, “Are you my person?” And I say, “Yes, I am still your person.”

What is your nerdiest passion?

Reading … I love to read … everything from the Sunday New York Times, to research articles, to the latest bestseller. At any given time I am reading five or so books as well as half a dozen research journals.

What is your most treasured possession? Family photo albums.

If invisible for a day in the Keys, what would you do? This would be so fun. Just imagine taking my kids to school: a car with no driver.

On what occasion do you lie?

If I answered this, then others would know!

Favorite guilty pleasure? Netflix.

What job would you be terrible at? Window washer in any big city; I do not like heights.

Lunch with one person (dead or alive), whom would you choose?

And what would you eat? My mom … and seafood … it was her favorite.

My friends and family would describe me as … passionate.

My autobiography would be titled … “Blissfully Bonkers.”

When I go, I will go … many years from now, thankful for my life, hoping that those I leave here know how much they are loved, and ready for the next adventure.

It’s a SNAP Program teaches problem-solving skills JIM McCARTHY

A

program is underway in the Upper Keys to assist children through problem-solving and self-control — the goal being to prevent anxiety and depression from developing.

“Stop Now and Plan” (SNAP) is one of the newest programs within The Florida Keys Children’s Shelter’s repertoire. Designed for children 6 to 11, SNAP Coordinator Richard Townsend says, the 13-week program is not only going into classrooms, but will also be conducted in intimate settings with families.

With SNAP in the classroom, a professionally-trained facilitator and the classroom teacher follow a psychoeducational program. As they’re better able to respond to “triggers,” they learn to seek solutions that make issues they deal with smaller and satisfying.

“The program has been shown to leave kids managing relationships at home and at school better,” Townsend said. “Kids who go through the program on average are less likely to get into trouble or less likely to have issues with the law or serious problems with drugs. The program addresses a range of issues like bullying, being rejected, and how to get into activities that they haven’t been into before.”

Townsend said the program has been around for 25 years. Originally developed in Canada, Townsend says there’s a lot of research showing its effectiveness in preventing children from getting caught up in the legal system.

“What we’re hoping to do is help kids get along in schools and the community, help students get better grades and do more things they want to do,” he said. “In the end, we’re hoping they’re happier at home.”

Kids are referred to the program.

Groups are divided based on gender and age of the child. For a child to be in a group, the child and family need to be referred to the Children’s Shelter.

“For a child to be in that group, we have concurrent parenting groups,” he said. “What is unique in this program is while children are learning behaviors they can work on at home, the parents are learning parenting skills that will work with those behaviors.”

Parents are required to attend parenting groups that run simultaneously with their child’s group. They’re typically held in the early evening, and while the groups are in session, they will provide childcare for siblings.

The program cannot serve the child unless a parent or guardian participates. Prior to starting the group both the parent and the child will be interviewed to assure the child could potentially benefit. Autistic spectrum children are not served because research and experience shows that they do not handle the format and expectations of these groups very well.

The program has rolled out in the classroom. As for clinical groups, Townsend said they’re still looking for a few more children before they begin.

RUN FOR A CAUSE Mariner’s 5K a success

unners and walkers throughout the community gathered Nov. 17 for the Mariners Hospital Gordon 5K Walk/ Run and 10K Run. The 5K kicked off at Coral Shores High School and ended at Treasure Village Montessori School.

The 10K began at Treasure Village Montessori School. Proceeds from the race will go to benefit Mariners Hospital Center for Excellence in Nursing, which supports programs for Mariners’ nurses.
