n Nov. 17, the reorganized and rebuilt Marathon Youth Club Football league finished the season with a “blue on white” game at Marathon Community Park. Players range in age from 9 to 12 years old and the season ended with a roster of 20 kids. According to Coach Matt Pitcher, the team plans on playing teams from the Key Largo and Key West leagues next year. Coach Pitcher was impressed with the progress of the young athletes: “Almost all of our players had never played tackle football, and many had never had the opportunity to play any kind of football.”

Traveling to the mainland for the Thanksgiving holiday, maybe even Miami International? Travelers need to know that the Dolphin Expressway has a new right-lane exit flyover ramp to MIA/northbound NW 42nd Avenue (LeJeune Road). Motorists now traveling east on the SR836 to catch a flight at MIA can stay safely in the far-right hand travel lane to access the new right lane exit ramp, which has been configured to begin more than a halfmile sooner than the old left-lane exit.

rown pelican squadrons are soaring into town this month, as they flee the cold for their wintering grounds in the Keys, Cuba and Central America. This year some of them are sporting stylish blue and green leg bands, which researchers are hoping humans will notice and report.

Scientists have banded about 750 birds under Project Pelican, which aims to illuminate brown pelican migration habits. Since the Keys are a vital migration corridor, researchers are hoping residents here will step up to the challenge of reporting sightings.

“These sightings are very important to learn more about the whereabouts of these majestic birds,” says Project Pelican researcher Yvan Satgé, who works with the multi-agency program at Clemson University. “Brown pelicans are very common in the South, but we still lack the most basic information about their ecology.”

Project Pelican sightings have helped researchers understand how juvenile pelicans (with brown heads, which turn yellow-white as they mature) survive their first winter, as well as track the distances they travel in those early years. While some simply head from Alabama to Tampa, a handful of others head from Texas all the way to the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Brown pelicans can live upwards of 20 years in the wild, dive headfirst into the water from 60 feet in the air, and scoop up 2.6 gallons in one gulp.

They were nearly driven to extinction by plume hunting in the late 1800s, then again in the 1960s and ‘70s by the pesticide DDT, which caused their eggs to become thin and collapse under their weight. Today their recovery is a rare and grand success story, as they approach their 10-year anniversary of being removed from the Endangered Species List.

Arianna Nesbitt is the executive director of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, not to be confused with the Healthy Start program initiative that’s offered by the Monroe County State Department of Health, or the fact that the first administers the second. Confused?

Yes, well … “I wish I could have picked another name, but …” said Arianna Nesbitt. But it’s good training for explaining her non-profit’s complicated role in helping the Keys community of children and parents.

It starts here: To bring babies into the world as healthy as possible, to give them the best start. “Healthy babies mean amazing families with phenomenal kids,” she said.

It all began 13 years ago when Nesbitt returned to the Keys from Texas (she was formerly heavily involved with the local Boys and Girls Club) to head the effort.

Armed with a master’s degree in public service administration, and the help of one part-time employee, she has grown the program immensely. It offers four core programs, administered by seven employees and one intern. And, it’s set to add even more.

Six years ago, she was a single lady.

Now, she has four foster children in the nest, and two who have already flown away.

What is the main focus of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition? You know … some days I think it’s about visiting expecting parents or parents, and telling them it’s all going to be okay. Some have very wide networks of support, and others who just moved here have no one. There are surprises, and accidents and emergencies, too. And not all families are

biological — we help families of adopted children, surrogate children. The Keys is surprisingly rural and sometimes connecting all the services is difficult.

What are the core services of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition? There are four. Healthy Start is about care coordination, finding a physician, support, and attending to the family’s needs.

Healthy Babies is about pre-natal care and finding a medical “home” for mom and baby. We accomplish much of this through medical partnerships with local obstetricians, pediatricians and mental health counselors. Our Keys to Kids Safety program covers everything from a safe home (making sure poisonous cleaners are out of reach) to car seats, bicycle helmets, and education like CPR classes. The Keys to Kids Growing program is about child development and covers the “tot time” class for fine motor skills and “wiggles and giggles” or active recreation with partners like local children’s gymnastic instructors.

What else? There’s also a lactation program in development that helps women feed their babies comfortably. Breast feeding is supposed to be easy, but it’s not really. Our newest initiative is to come up with a staff of experienced labor coaches and doulas to help moms as they deliver and begin their parenting journey.

Can you share a ‘success’ story with us? There was one expectant mother who didn’t feel good and we got her to the local midwife who uncovered a surprise and serious medical condition. She was flown out, the baby was born with a genetic heart condition and needed surgery. Our team immediately flew into action — get the dad to the mainland, stay in constant contact, get the monitors and machines they needed when they got home. And when the mom and baby needed follow up doctor visits on the mainland — this was before Uber — we called in the Five Sixes taxi company and gave the driver a huge itinerary with instructions to stay with the mom and baby all day. That was years ago. The little girl is in kindergarten now. Her mom still brings us banana bread but I feel like it should be the other way around; she did all the work!

How do you find funding? One of the ways is though private donation. There are many successful business owners in the Keys that were once Healthy Start clients.

They still remember what it’s like to need something. I call them, explain the situation, and they write a check. This community is so giving.

I love my job.

Which TV, movie, or superhero character is your alter ego? Elizabeth McCord of “Madam Secretary.” (But her kids compare her to Sandra Bullock’s character in “The Blind Side.”)

What are the ages of your foster children? In the house right now, I have a 10-year-old, two 14-yearolds, a 16-year-old and an 18-yearold getting ready to leave for Gainesville. My 23-year-old foster daughter is living independently.

She still calls me and asks, “Are you my person?” And I say, “Yes, I am still your person.”

What is your nerdiest passion?

Reading … I love to read … everything from the Sunday New York Times, to research articles, to the latest bestseller. At any given time I am reading five or so books as well as half a dozen research journals.

What is your most treasured possession? Family photo albums.

If invisible for a day in the Keys, what would you do? This would be so fun. Just imagine taking my kids to school: a car with no driver.

On what occasion do you lie?

If I answered this, then others would know!

Favorite guilty pleasure? Netflix.

What job would you be terrible at? Window washer in any big city; I do not like heights.

Lunch with one person (dead or alive), whom would you choose?

And what would you eat? My mom … and seafood … it was her favorite.

My friends and family would describe me as … passionate.

My autobiography would be titled … “Blissfully Bonkers.”

When I go, I will go … many years from now, thankful for my life, hoping that those I leave here know how much they are loved, and ready for the next adventure.

16 Church needs funds to finish affordable housing rehab

he miracle of the “five loaves and two fish” looks a little different in modern-day Marathon. It looks, in fact, like buying a condemned 16-unit apartment complex, completely rehabbing it and setting affordable rents; like somewhere around $800 or $900 a month.

That’s exactly what the St. Columba Episcopalian Church in Marathon is undertaking. It’s a fearless approach to a daunting problem — private, charitable ownership of affordable housing available to the public. Rev. Debra Andrew Maconaughey said the church has set a goal of welcoming tenants about four months from now.

“When I get worried about the details of this project, I just tell myself, ‘You have to have faith, Debra,’” she said.

The church is setting out to raise about $400,000 to rehab the units. The buildings have already been gutted, revealing healthy “bones” — solid concrete construction, concrete barrel tile roof, and indestructible terrazzo floors that have been buried under layers of flooring for years.

“The floors are going to look great when we get all done with them,” said Rick Kidwell, disaster recover coordinator for St. Columba.

There are four units to a building (two up, two down), and the buildings face each other across a communal space that will be completely landscaped. Each unit is about 525 square feet with wide windows with a combined kitchen-living room, a bedroom, a closet, and a bathroom. The old pool will be removed to make more room for parking, and there are plans to develop an additional building into a shared communal space with some patio tables and umbrellas to the side.

Everything inside the apartments is going to be new.

“New windows, new plumbing, new electric and new Ikea kitchens,” said Maconaughey. “The kitchens were arranged for by a group called Bridge to Hope.”

WIN A WHOLE HOUSE! To help raise funds to repair the affordable housing complex, St. Columba Episcopal Church is raffling off a refurbished “tiny home.”

Tickets cost $250 each, and only 1,000 chances will be sold to win a entire house valued at $80,000.

The winning ticket will be drawn on the final day of the Florida Keys Celtic Festival on Jan. 13, 2019. Winner need not be present to win.

The home was donated to the church by a member of the Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church in Pembroke Pines, whose congregation was instrumental in helping the Middle Keys community after Hurricane Irma.

The 456-square feet features a full bathroom, kitchen and appliances, two decks, bedroom and a spare loft.

“About the only thing it needs is a stackable washer and dryer,” said Rev. Debra Andrew Maconaughey.

The winner will be responsible for securing transportation, lot, and meeting all the local and state regulations regarding installation and elevation. The unit is currently on Loggerhead Lane, across from the main church building.

The complex is located at 1655 Overseas Highway and includes a little corner shop directly on the highway.

Plans are to make it into a thrift store specializing in baby goods. In place of the Nearly New Thrift Shop in Gulfside Village Plaza? “Oh no, we will continue to operate that one, too,” Maconaughey said.

Of course. So, in addition to regular church services and functions, St. Columba will manage affordable housing, two thrift shops, year-round after-school care, special youth summer programs, be the title sponsor of the annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival, and continue its heavy involvement in the KAIR food pantry and crisis center, and the Independence Cay home to get working adults back on their feet.

The church has always responded to the community’s needs, especially under Maconaughey’s direction. But the idea for creating its own affordable housing grew out of its response after Hurricane Irma struck the Keys in 2017. The church became an informal housing authority of its own — with 22 trailers, plus bunks in the auxiliary building and, when push came to shove, air mattresses in the parish hall.

“At first it was displaced residents living in the donated, rented and purchased trailers,” said Kidwell.

“But as they moved out, we brought volunteers in,” said Maconaughey.

This past week, American Red Cross volunteers were staying in the auxiliary building. Next week, it will be Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

Maconaughey guesses they’ve housed about 2,000 volunteers since Irma. And their hearts are filled with success stories — people who lost everything but are now back on their feet, contributing members of the Middle Keys community.

This church, which does so much for the community, now is asking for something in return — donations.

Dr. Larry Hribar, pictured, received the J.Y.Porter Award, which is presented to scientists who have made significant contributions to entomology with a special emphasis on the abatement of mosquitoes.

Dr. Hribar’s contributions to the Florida mosquito control community include more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, instruction of mosquito control professionals, president of the Florida Mosquito Control Association, and involvement in mosquito surveillance during periods of active mosquito-borne diseases. Kayak tours benefit wildlife refuge Monthly kayak tours that let participants watch the sun set while the full moon rises will resume next week.

The Florida Keys Wildlife Society (formerly FAVOR) will resume the tours on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The easy-going paddle goes from Big Pine Key along the mangrove shoreline of No Name Key. Sponsored by and departing from Big Pine Kayak Adventures, the tours’ proceeds benefit local wildlife through the Florida Keys Wildlife Society, the official friends group for the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges.

The $25 donation includes kayak, gear and experienced guide.

enry Perrine arrived on Indian Key on Christmas Day 1838. He arrived in the Keys to develop the Tropical Plant Company. The company had been awarded the first agricultural grant approved by Congress.

Perrine would travel to Key Vacas with Charles Howe in the early summer months of 1840. They visited a Bahamian settlement and brought Manilla mulberry and Sea Island cotton.

Perrine described the community of approximately 200 people as having about 50 homes. Half were of wood frame construction and half built with palmetto thatch. There was also a private school.

According to Perrine, the people of Key West largely referred to this group as “lazy konks.” Perrine wrote, “I am now fully satisfied that our agricultural statesman would promptly pronounce that the humblest grower of sweet potatoes at Key Vacas is an infinitely more useful citizen of South Florida than the haughtiest of office-holder in Key West.”

osa Rios, Christina Rodriguez and Mary Lou Darczuk — of the ABC’s Rebuilding the Keys team — took home top honors at the 18th Not-So-Annual Habitat for Humanity Spelling Bee. “The Teachers,” as they have come to be known by nerds who like this kind of stuff, are perennial winners.

Their winning word was … well, actually, we don’t remember, but it was hard. (They sell lots of beer and wine at this event. And if you think spelling bees are boring, or not a spectator sport, you’re wrong.)

The BPAS Me Another Beer team — composed of the City of Marathon’s David Migut, Brian Shea and Cody Ward — lasted long enough to get knocked into second place by failing to spell “tchotchke” correctly. What losers.

The clear darlings of the evening, though, were the Marathon Middle School students of the ABSeas team.

Chloe Migut (“the smartest Migut in the room,” according to the Weekly’s Jason Koler, who would relinquish his emceeing duties to his son, Josh), Riley Seligson and Brianna Nelson adorned their table with a sea theme, plus they had these adorable pens topped with sparkly fluff in pastel colors. The team received special recognition and gift cards.

The Weekly team placed third, or fourth. We are hazy on the details.

Every team was sponsored by a local business or agency, and not one of the teams left the $75 mulligan unused. In addition, spectators at the Key Colony Beach City Hall event were hungry and thirsty. In all, the Habitat chapter collected more than $5,000 to advance local homeownership in the Middle Keys.

here’s Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now … Giving Tuesday, five days after Thanksgiving. It’s an international movement to inspire more giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. Some say Giving Tuesday has been around for seven years now, and everyone is encouraged to celebrate the gifts by tweeting or posting with the #givingtuesdayhashtag.

There’s any number of ways to give, of course.

It’s the tip of the iceberg. There are so many organizations powered by people who care deeply in the Middle Keys. Your #givingtuesday doesn’t have to be about the holidays or children, per se. Your pledge can help veterans, or the homeless, or firefighters. Surely, one of the causes speaks to you. Call them up, make a pledge. Arrange to mail your check, or even have someone swing by to pick it up.

There were many years that I didn’t have a dollar to spare but could volunteer my time. Whether it was baking a cake for the school bake sale, or manning a bazaar booth, or helping sort presents, or even finagling the temporary use of my husband’s pickup truck, all of these things help the people who are powering good deeds in Marathon. Be one of them.

P.S.: Giving can also be deeply personal. I was shaken— the whole town was shaken — by the news of the young Marathon girl involved in a traffic accident recently (see story at right). My heart breaks for her and her family, and the only thing that makes it even partially better is knowing how Marathon is rallying around, determined to make a bad situation better. While plans are still developing for a formal fundraising, I’ve put something aside for that, too.

SOME OTHER IDEAS: • ZONTA FESTIVAL OF TREES Buy some raffle tickets to win one of the Christmas trees at Zonta’s Festival of Trees from Nov. 28-Dec. 1 at the Florida Keys Country Club.

They partner with agencies serving children and also the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Key West Police Department. Families are vetted, and then parents can “shop” at one of three stores for their kids’ particular interests. “I want everyone to know that I am thankful for all those who have called or texted. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t answer. Everybody in Marathon has been amazing, and that’s what is helping us, and Sammy, get through this,” she said.

The accident happened on the evening of Nov. 15 when the family — including twin sister Sabrina Schofield — were crossing Overseas Highway on foot with a group of people near The Hurricane.

Padron said the internal bleeding has been stopped, but Samantha is still intubated. She expects that to be removed in the next few days. Samantha suffered a broken pelvis, collarbone, arm, nose and cheekbone. She has dental issues as well. Samantha is conscious and able to answer basic questions. Doctors believe there were no brain injuries.

“We are taking baby steps,” said Padron.

Samantha’s older brother, Michael Schofield, praised family friend Luis Gonzalez, as well as Sheriff Rick Ramsay and the rest of the first responders for quick thinking and “giving Samantha the fighting chance.”

The family is uninsured and will need the community’s support once Samantha’s health is stabilized. The Marathon Weekly will update readers as soon as possible.

Researchers are looking for answers or generations, Keys watermen have been terrorizing youngsters with stories of “Big Mo.” Legend has it the 18foot great hammerhead had eyeballs “as big as baseballs” and weighed close to 1,000 pounds. Most tales put Big Mo at the old Bahia Honda Bridge, while others have claimed to spot it, even land it, at 7 Mile Bridge.

Very little is known about the great hammerhead, giving strength to the epic “it-was-this-big” lore. And most of what the scientific community does know, it learned in the lab, not in the wild.

The Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and Dynasty Marine have started a nonprofit “R3ACH” program, for just that reason — to study the great hammerhead. The Rockerama concert (sidebar) will help fund the research.

“We started the nonprofit in 2013,” said Ben Daughtry. “This hammerhead project is something Forrest Young and I thought up years ago. We want to better understand the lifecycle of the Great Hammerhead.”

Money raised will fund vessels, experienced scientists and satellite tagging equipment to learn more about the long distance travels of these sharks.

“We hope to piggy back on the aquarium’s research by tagging them with sensors that would be like a ‘daily diary’ or record fine scale information like minute-by-minute water temperatures, depth and swimming speed,” said Florida Atlantic University researcher Steve Kajiura.

The questions start with the most basic — where do they “spawn,” or pup? There are theories, but no scientific evidence. But researchers do know that the great hammerhead give birth to live pups, about 25 to 50 at a time.

And why is the shark’s head shaped like THAT? Again, it’s unknown. Some theorize the larger head with more area means more sensors to detect prey. Others theorize the head shape and size offers better mobility. The second is true, but not in the way researchers believed.

Rather than giving the Hammerhead shark “lift,” like an airplane wing, it actually works more like a race car’s “foil” offering stability. The difference was reported in a 2004 article in Dive Training magazine, that cited Kajiura’s expertise.

“Recently, I’ve been studying whether the huge nose of the great hammerhead gives it some type of advantage,” said Kaijiura. Turns out, it is better at directional smelling that helps it lock on to the prey (which makes total sense if you think about the fact that one nostril could be four feet away from the other; it knows whether to turn right or left).

It wasn’t until the late ’80s, that researchers were able to observe one useful feature of the shark’s shape. It uses the “hammer” to pin down one of its favorite meals — the stingray. “The shark used its head to ‘pin’ the fleeing stingray against the bottom and then pivoted its body into position to deliver an immobilizing bite to the ray’s pectoral disc,” according to a 2002 paper by Demian D. Chapman and Samuel H. Gruber. The great hammerhead also eats crabs, squid, shrimp and fish.

Currently, the great hammerhead is on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the U.S., only the Scalloped Hammerhead is on the list of endangered species. While populations are reportedly declining, again, little is known about the actual numbers of the great hammerhead shark. Of the nine species, three frequent the Keys — the great hammerhead, the scalloped hammerhead and the bonnethead shark.

“Great hammerheads are actually delicate. They can’t handle the stress of being caught unless your scientists are very, very good,” Kajiura said. “The big advantage of working with the aquarium and Dynasty is that they are very good at live capturing these animals. We have a very good chance of success.”

County graduates first batch of homegrown fire fighters

Graduating students show one of the skills they learned during the training while their family and friends watch.

onroe County Fire Rescue’s Battalion Chief of Training Charlie Mather choked up as he proudly talked about the first graduating class of the Monroe County “Hot Shots” training program at the county’s Joe London Fire Training Academy.

The program started with 43 people; 29 successfully completed the 456 hours of intensive classroom and rigorous practical training over the past 12 weeks.

“I would like to thank this group of individuals who came together as one and chased the dream of becoming a firefighter,” Mather told the packed room that included friends and family. “I have challenged you and pushed you this entire program. … and I have one more challenge for you. I challenge you to be the best you can be.”

This new program — approved and funded by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners — provided free firefighting and first-responder training for qualified Monroe County residents in exchange for a commitment to work or volunteer as a firefighter anywhere in the Keys for three years.

“This was an amazing opportunity for my son (Angel Moreno) to get this training and be able to do something good for the community,” Sibelly Cabrera said. “I’m a single mother and didn’t have the resources to pay for it. My son has been volunteering for four years at the Tavernier fire station and now he has the opportunity to be full-time.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Denise Moreno of Key Largo, whose daughter Alexandra was one of two women to complete the training. “We want to thank the commissioners and county administrator who made it possible,” she said. “It’s difficult, with the gear rental and all that, but this program made it possible for her to do this now.”

Alexandra Moreno has a bachelor’s degree in public safety administration from the College of Central Florida in Ocala and said the firefighter training was difficult, “but this is the career I want.”

The first graduating class of the Monroe County Hot Shots program with the training staff.

The program waived the $2,200 curriculum fee for qualified local residents — 18 and older with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED — to take the Firefighter I and II courses at the county’s new training facility on Crawl Key (MM 56.6).

The students, aged 18 to 37, successfully completed 17 performance objectives of the firefighter program and are now prepared to take the State of Florida Firefighter I and II examination. To be hired at Monroe County Fire Rescue, a candidate must also complete EMT training.

The purpose of this program is to decrease the high turnover rate of firefighters (now about 15 percent annually), which is costly and disruptive. Due to the high cost of living, Monroe County Fire Rescue has been hiring more and more firefighters who live on the mainland and commute to their assigned stations throughout the Keys.

Of the graduating class, 26 were from Monroe County and had their class fees waived.

TWO GAMES, FOUR TEAMS Middle School girls’ and boys’ teams play Florida Christian

M

arathon Middle School soccer teams took on Florida Christian Nov. 15 with the boys winning their season opener 6-2 and the girls team losing a close game by one goal, 3-2.

The Marathon boys team captain Henry Herrera had a strong game, scoring five of the six goals. When asked about his team, first-year Marathon boys Coach Shannon P. Wiley said that he is very excited for his team this season.

“We have some of our veteran players returning and sharing their knowledge and skills with some of our younger 6th graders.” This is Coach Wiley’s first year in Marathon, but his seventh year coaching at the middle school level, coming to Marathon from Vero Beach.

Marathon will be on the road their next four games, returning Jan. 8 to face Westminster Christian.

Christmas (and other Happy Holidays) How did a pleasant greeting become a threat to one’s way of life?

I

still remember that fateful day during a recent Holiday Shopping Season like it just happened in the not-too-distant past. Visitors from some backward part of the planet were shopping (but not actually buying) in our little gift shop emporium.

Oh well. As this group of cave dwellers was leaving the shop, we wished them Happy Holidays. Without a moment’s hesitation, one member of the group turned to us and said rather rudely, and I’m not making this up, “Where we come from, we say, ‘Merry Christmas.’”

He made a face as if I’d just told him I had just shot his dog, then turned away and made his exit, knuckles dragging on the ground.

How did we get to the particular place in this day and time where the act of wishing someone Happy Holidays is taken as an insult to one’s particular Lord and Savior? I just don’t get it. It’s like the concept of “peace toward men of good will” that we’re supposed to have in our hearts this time of year just gets trampled by the religiously intolerant. And we know where religious (and ideological) intolerance has taken humanity…

Hindu: I don’t believe in Allah. Muslim (radical): I must kill you.

Muslim: I don’t believe in Jesus.

Crusader: I must kill you.

Catholic (N. Ireland): My Jesus is better than your Jesus. Protestant (N. Ireland): I must kill you.

Let’s not forget Palestinian vs. Jew, Shiite vs. Sunni, radical jihadists vs. the civilized world … enough of that; let’s just get back to the holidays.

The Holiday Season encompasses a lot of holidays, not just Christmas.

While many people place the beginning of the holidays at Thanksgiving, I prefer to start the Season at Halloween. It’s like the fall kickoff for the rest of the year! Then we’re grateful on the aforementioned Thanksgiving, followed immediately by my wedding anniversary (11/27) and my birthday (12/1). Then, the Holiday Season continues with Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Festivus (!), and the celebration of the New Year.

When it comes to celebrating life and directing good and kind thoughts and acts toward our fellow humans,

does one’s religious tradition really matter? I was raised Catholic, in the Christian tradition of this huge oneday event called Christmas. It’s like going to a fancy party with an open bar and a nice buffet and limiting yourself to meatballs and club soda.

As the song says, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. Let’s celebrate it for all it’s worth to all of us, not ruin it with narrow-mindedness and Luddite tendencies.

Let’s also not forget those who are less fortunate, and those who have hit hard times. A lot of people won’t be having the holidays of their dreams this year, thanks to Irma and other circumstances. There are many opportunities for giving during this giving season, plus so many ways to help throughout the year. A great way to start would be Presents in Paradise (look them up on Facebook or email presentsinparadise@gmail.com). They are a local not-for-profit dedicated to making sure no child in the Keys goes without on Christmas. And there’s no better legacy for the 2018 Holiday Season than a New Year’s resolution to help those less fortunate in the ways that we can.

Now that I’ve gotten all this off my chest, let me close by reminding everyone that Winter Is Here. No! (I have honestly never seen an episode of that show.) What I meant was wishing everyone the Happiest of Holiday Seasons!

sham (“Toby�) Holding explains: Short answer: No. As long as the temperature remains at 50 degrees or above, the bees in the Keys keep working — collecting nectar and pollinating crops. So, if you have citrus trees in the back yard or tomatoes in your small vegetable garden, all of these need to be pollinated to produce fruit. For the Florida bees, spring starts in December and local bee keepers are busiest in winter.

But the bees we have in the Keys are descendants of the European honeybee. When settlers from Europe established their colonies in America, the beekeepers brought their hives with them.

There, the bees hibernate during the winter.

Florida honeybees collect most of their nectar from the flowering blossoms of mango and avocado, tupelo, eucalyptus, oranges, saw palmetto, Brazilian pepper, black mangrove, Jamaican dogwood, sea grape and cabbage palm. In summer and fall there are also a number of wildflowers that the bees use to produce honey.

In spite of the damages from hurricane Irma, South Florida and the Keys beekeeping is very much alive. While hardest hit in Big Pine Key, most of Key Largo hives survived the disaster relatively untouched. There is a large number of beekeepers in Florida, ranging from the hobbyists to the commercial level.

The bee population has experienced its challenges over the years with a variety of parasites and diseases that hinder the ability of the hives to grow, but beekeepers are constantly experimenting to minimize the bee loss.

Choose honey over sugar — its antioxidant compounds can improve your health. And, thanks to the masterful work of the bees, honey is the only food that doesn’t really have an expiration date.

rom the sidewalk, it looks like a run-of-the-mill sleepy health food store. Inside, the vibrant café is winning hearts (literally) and brimming with imagination. It’s like a winning trifecta — tasty food, beautiful food, food that’s good for you.

“Our whole idea was just to showcase vegetarian and vegan food that’s exciting,” said Food For Thought’s Blair Shiver, who co-owns the shop and eatery with husband Michael Nealis.

Indeed, the café seems to be eating up more and more real estate in the shop in Gulfside Village. “We’re going to be looking at expanding our ‘grab and go’ options in the next few months,” she said.

The café’s vision is driven by the talents of Shiver, Nealis and Kiki MacIntryre, who said that before she began working in the café seven years ago, had “no idea where the kitchen was in my own house.”

But then, one day, her two daughters became vegetarians.

“I asked myself, ‘What am I going to feed these kids?’” she said. And so she embarked on an education that turned into a calling.

The food is really inventive. Shards of coconut meat take the place of fish or conch in the coconut ceviche. (It’s delicious.) Vegan sausage puts the heft in the breakfast tostada served on a gluten-free, seeded tortilla served with a Mexican slaw. (Wow!) Avocado toast is elevated with a handful of fresh sprouts. (Yum). Of course, the clientele also gravitates to the smoothies and shots of healthy go-go juice called Wheat Grass Shots designed to snap a body back into balance.

The café is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Sunday (look for more hours during high season).

It’s located in the Gulfside Village between Anthony’s boutique and Salon Blanco. The telephone number is 305743-3297.
