Travelers need to know that the Dolphin Expressway has a new right-lane exit flyover ramp to MIA/northbound NW 42nd Avenue (LeJeune Road). volunteered to be a Democratic observer for the recount here in Key West. I went through an online training, and I got my assigned time to observe the manual recount.

However, Monroe only had 36,000 votes to count and less than a few hundred “over and under” votes to manually examine, so I was excused. I’m told it took about an hour.

Meanwhile, in Broward and Palm Beach, scores of people huddled over folding tables recounting ballots around the clock for days. Broward had over 700,000 votes and Palm Beach had nearly 600,000 votes. The Florida Keys are tiny in comparison with the population of the rest of Florida. We only had one candidate for statewide office visit Key West during the campaign, Andrew Gillum. I suspect that it was because Gillum thought that he was going to win and wanted to come and be surrounded by like-minded voters. Florida is the third largest state in the nation and almost all of our statewide races came within 30,000 votes out of over 8 million cast!

There is still one more race to be decided, but in the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats picked up 37 seats in the House of Representatives. One of those gains was right here in Florida’s 26th Congressional District. In Florida, your vote mattered, especially in Monroe County, in which the initial Senate race results had Rick Scott winning the county by a single vote. Monroe County saw record turnout in a midterm at 67 percent. Our issues and needs are different from those of the mainland, and yet almost all of our representatives at both the state and federal levels focus on mainland issues, because that is where the votes are.

One thing I joke about is that after Mile Marker 8, it’s all Republican. Key Westers may feel overwhelmed by the rest of the largely red Keys, which outweigh our vote. Congress has not seen an increase in size

since 1911, when the U.S. population was about a third of what it is today. If we had an increase in the size of Congress and had smaller districts, Key West would have a larger say in its representation in Washington.

Ironically, perhaps, our voice is more reflected by our friends on the mainland in Miami-Dade, rather than our Keys neighbors.

On the state level, both of our candidates for state representative hailed from the Keys. Steve Friedman is a boat captain in Islamorada and Holly Raschein is from Key Largo. State representative districts have about 175,000 people, so again, most of the district is on the mainland.

People are shocked when I tell them that Key West was represented in Congress by a Republican.

“Really? Super liberal, hippy dippy, Key West?”

“Well,” I say, “Key West has a population of about 26,000 people, while a Congressional district in Florida has about 750,000 … so we are about 3.5 percent of the district.” While we are proportionally small, we made a big impression on visiting politicians, and that may be our avenue to being heard.

During the campaign, our Congresswoman-elect, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, spent a lot of time in the Key West. At first it was mainly to raise money, but like anyone who visits, she started to figure out ways to spend even more time here. I am hoping that we see a lot more of our Congresswoman here.

Hopefully, she knows that there is a direct flight from Key West to Washington, DC so she can pop in on her way to work.

o celebrate its expanded programs and mission, the former Bikram Yoga studio at 927 White St., Key West, has a fresh new name, logo, and offerings for the community. The oldest continually running yoga school in Key West is now called “Yoga Key.” “Yoga Key is deeply committed to the health and well-being of the Keys community,” said studio owner, operator and instructor Danny Sine. “Following Hurricane Irma, we made the decision to significantly roll back our package prices to assist those impacted with access to the school and support of its teachers and members. As we have witnessed the emotional impact that has continued to affect our community, we made the decision to continue the discounts into the new year.”

In addition to the hot “26&2” style yoga that the school has offered since 1985, recent additions include warm yin yoga, sound therapy, core 40, a series of unique pop-up classes, customized private and group sessions, and a popular Monday evening kids-and-parents class.

Arianna Nesbitt is the executive director of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, not to be confused with the Healthy Start program initiative that’s offered by the Monroe County State Department of Health, or the fact that the first administers the second. Confused?

Yes, well … “I wish I could have picked another name, but …” said Arianna Nesbitt. But it’s good training for explaining her non-profit’s complicated role in helping the Keys community of children and parents.

It starts here: To bring babies into the world as healthy as possible, to give them the best start. “Healthy babies mean amazing families with phenomenal kids,” she said.

It all began 13 years ago when Nesbitt returned to the Keys from Texas (she was formerly heavily involved with the local Boys and Girls Club) to head the effort.

Armed with a master’s degree in public service administration, and the help of one part-time employee, she has grown the program immensely. It offers four core programs, administered by seven employees and one intern. And, it’s set to add even more.

Six years ago, she was a single lady.

Now, she has four foster children in the nest, and two who have already flown away.

What is the main focus of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition? You know … some days I think it’s about visiting expecting parents or parents, and telling them it’s all going to be okay. Some have very wide networks of support, and others who just moved here have no one. There are surprises, and accidents and emergencies, too. And not all families are

biological — we help families of adopted children, surrogate children. The Keys is surprisingly rural and sometimes connecting all the services is difficult.

What are the core services of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition? There are four. Healthy Start is about care coordination, finding a physician, support, and attending to the family’s needs.

Healthy Babies is about pre-natal care and finding a medical “home” for mom and baby. We accomplish much of this through medical partnerships with local obstetricians, pediatricians and mental health counselors. Our Keys to Kids Safety program covers everything from a safe home (making sure poisonous cleaners are out of reach) to car seats, bicycle helmets, and education like CPR classes. The Keys to Kids Growing program is about child development and covers the “tot time” class for fine motor skills and “wiggles and giggles” or active recreation with partners like local children’s gymnastic instructors.

What else? There’s also a lactation program in development that helps women feed their babies comfortably. Breast feeding is supposed to be easy, but it’s not really. Our newest initiative is to come up with a staff of experienced labor coaches and doulas to help moms as they deliver and begin their parenting journey.

Can you share a ‘success’ story with us? There was one expectant mother who didn’t feel good and we got her to the local midwife who uncovered a surprise and serious medical condition. She was flown out, the baby was born with a genetic heart condition and needed surgery. Our team immediately flew into action — get the dad to the mainland, stay in constant contact, get the monitors and machines they needed when they got home. And when the mom and baby needed follow up doctor visits on the mainland — this was before Uber — we called in the Five Sixes taxi company and gave the driver a huge itinerary with instructions to stay with the mom and baby all day. That was years ago. The little girl is in kindergarten now. Her mom still brings us banana bread but I feel like it should be the other way around; she did all the work!

How do you find funding? One of the ways is though private donation. There are many successful business owners in the Keys that were once Healthy Start clients.

They still remember what it’s like to need something. I call them, explain the situation, and they write a check. This community is so giving.

I love my job.

Which TV, movie, or superhero character is your alter ego? Elizabeth McCord of “Madam Secretary.” (But her kids compare her to Sandra Bullock’s character in “The Blind Side.”)

What are the ages of your foster children? In the house right now, I have a 10-year-old, two 14-yearolds, a 16-year-old and an 18-yearold getting ready to leave for Gainesville. My 23-year-old foster daughter is living independently.

She still calls me and asks, “Are you my person?” And I say, “Yes, I am still your person.”

What is your nerdiest passion?

Reading … I love to read … everything from the Sunday New York Times, to research articles, to the latest bestseller. At any given time I am reading five or so books as well as half a dozen research journals.

What is your most treasured possession? Family photo albums.

If invisible for a day in the Keys, what would you do? This would be so fun. Just imagine taking my kids to school: a car with no driver.

On what occasion do you lie?

If I answered this, then others would know!

Favorite guilty pleasure? Netflix.

What job would you be terrible at? Window washer in any big city; I do not like heights.

Lunch with one person (dead or alive), whom would you choose?

And what would you eat? My mom … and seafood … it was her favorite.

My friends and family would describe me as … passionate.

My autobiography would be titled … “Blissfully Bonkers.”

When I go, I will go … many years from now, thankful for my life, hoping that those I leave here know how much they are loved, and ready for the next adventure.

FISHERMAN’S CAFÉ SERVES IT FRESH

he Fisherman’s Café website claims its menu is full of items “reminiscent of an era gone by” and we couldn’t agree more. The small seafood shack, nestled along the historic seaport walkway (just off of Elizabeth Street in Key West), evokes a rare glimpse of old Key West.

The nostalgia is real, along with the scrumptious tastes of fresh seafood caught daily and supplied from local docks.

“Fisherman’s Café keeps the traditions of Key West going,” said Chef Rick Zapka.

“We buy local fish from local fishermen through Three Hands Fish and purchase Key West Pinks from local vendors.”

The menu is full of “must-try” Keys fusion, but the Blackened Key West Pink Shrimp Club Wrap is a favorite, along with fresh catch fish sandwiches served with papaya and mango slaw.

But for anyone strolling in the shade of Shrimp Boat Sound, it would be a sinful offense not to dig into the Lobster Enchilau Tacos at Fisherman’s Café. The tacos are

made with Florida Lobster, topped in a rich, garlicky tomato sauce.

“Our enchilau sauce, which is Cuban, is a garlic sauce we place on all of our tacos,” said Zapka. “And I recommend our (Cracked) Conch Salad to anyone who has never tried it. Ours is made with Grade A Bahamian.”

Along with a diverse array of lunch and dinner options, Fisherman’s café offers breakfast from open to close. The breakfast menu includes the “El Cubano Sandwich” — made with a black bean spread, Swiss cheese, egg, Cuban pork and chorizo. Or sample some Cuban cheese toast, sesame guava toast or Hill’s Cheddar Grits for lighter fare.

“Our breakfast is really popular with locals and we have a ton of add-ons,” said Zapka. “And I love to get folks wired up with our café con leche.”

Researchers are looking for answers or generations, Keys watermen have been terrorizing youngsters with stories of “Big Mo.” Legend has it the 18foot great hammerhead had eyeballs “as big as baseballs” and weighed close to 1,000 pounds. Most tales put Big Mo at the old Bahia Honda Bridge, while others have claimed to spot it, even land it, at 7 Mile Bridge.

Very little is known about the great hammerhead, giving strength to the epic “it-was-this-big” lore. And most of what the scientific community does know, it learned in the lab, not in the wild.

The Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and Dynasty Marine have started a nonprofit “R3ACH” program, for just that reason — to study the great hammerhead. The Rockerama concert (sidebar) will help fund the research.

“We started the nonprofit in 2013,” said Ben Daughtry. “This hammerhead project is something Forrest Young and I thought up years ago. We want to better understand the lifecycle of the Great Hammerhead.”

Money raised will fund vessels, experienced scientists and satellite tagging equipment to learn more about the long distance travels of these sharks.

“We hope to piggy back on the aquarium’s research by tagging them with sensors that would be like a ‘daily diary’ or record fine scale information like minute-by-minute water temperatures, depth and swimming speed,” said Florida Atlantic University researcher Steve Kajiura.

The questions start with the most basic — where do they “spawn,” or pup? There are theories, but no scientific evidence. But researchers do know that the great hammerhead give birth to live pups, about 25 to 50 at a time.

And why is the shark’s head shaped like THAT? Again, it’s unknown. Some theorize the larger head with more area means more sensors to detect prey. Others theorize the head shape and size offers better mobility. The second is true, but not in the way researchers believed.

Rather than giving the Hammerhead shark “lift,” like an airplane wing, it actually works more like a race car’s “foil” offering stability. The difference was reported in a 2004 article in Dive Training magazine, that cited Kajiura’s expertise.

“Recently, I’ve been studying whether the huge nose of the great hammerhead gives it some type of advantage,” said Kaijiura. Turns out, it is better at directional smelling that helps it lock on to the prey (which makes total sense if you think about the fact that one nostril could be four feet away from the other; it knows whether to turn right or left).

It wasn’t until the late ’80s, that researchers were able to observe one useful feature of the shark’s shape. It uses the “hammer” to pin down one of its favorite meals — the stingray. “The shark used its head to ‘pin’ the fleeing stingray against the bottom and then pivoted its body into position to deliver an immobilizing bite to the ray’s pectoral disc,” according to a 2002 paper by Demian D. Chapman and Samuel H. Gruber. The great hammerhead also eats crabs, squid, shrimp and fish.

Currently, the great hammerhead is on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the U.S., only the Scalloped Hammerhead is on the list of endangered species. While populations are reportedly declining, again, little is known about the actual numbers of the great hammerhead shark. Of the nine species, three frequent the Keys — the great hammerhead, the scalloped hammerhead and the bonnethead shark.

“Great hammerheads are actually delicate. They can’t handle the stress of being caught unless your scientists are very, very good,” Kajiura said. “The big advantage of working with the aquarium and Dynasty is that they are very good at live capturing these animals. We have a very good chance of success.”

County graduates first batch of homegrown fire fighters

Graduating students show one of the skills they learned during the training while their family and friends watch.

onroe County Fire Rescue’s Battalion Chief of Training Charlie Mather choked up as he proudly talked about the first graduating class of the Monroe County “Hot Shots” training program at the county’s Joe London Fire Training Academy.

The program started with 43 people; 29 successfully completed the 456 hours of intensive classroom and rigorous practical training over the past 12 weeks.

“I would like to thank this group of individuals who came together as one and chased the dream of becoming a firefighter,” Mather told the packed room that included friends and family. “I have challenged you and pushed you this entire program. … and I have one more challenge for you. I challenge you to be the best you can be.”

This new program — approved and funded by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners — provided free firefighting and first-responder training for qualified Monroe County residents in exchange for a commitment to work or volunteer as a firefighter anywhere in the Keys for three years.

“This was an amazing opportunity for my son (Angel Moreno) to get this training and be able to do something good for the community,” Sibelly Cabrera said. “I’m a single mother and didn’t have the resources to pay for it. My son has been volunteering for four years at the Tavernier fire station and now he has the opportunity to be full-time.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Denise Moreno of Key Largo, whose daughter Alexandra was one of two women to complete the training. “We want to thank the commissioners and county administrator who made it possible,” she said. “It’s difficult, with the gear rental and all that, but this program made it possible for her to do this now.”

Alexandra Moreno has a bachelor’s degree in public safety administration from the College of Central Florida in Ocala and said the firefighter training was difficult, “but this is the career I want.”

The program waived the $2,200 curriculum fee for qualified local residents — 18 and older with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED — to take the Firefighter I and II courses at the county’s new training facility on Crawl Key (MM 56.6).

The students, aged 18 to 37, successfully completed 17 performance objectives of the firefighter program and are now prepared to take the State of Florida Firefighter I and II examination. To be hired at Monroe County Fire Rescue, a candidate must also complete EMT training.

The purpose of this program is to decrease the high turnover rate of firefighters (now about 15 percent annually), which is costly and disruptive. Due to the high cost of living, Monroe County Fire Rescue has been hiring more and more firefighters who live on the mainland and commute to their assigned stations throughout the Keys.

Of the graduating class, 26 were from Monroe County and had their class fees waived.

t’s the end — and beginning — of an era. On Nov. 19 at noon, Key Westers gathered at Josephine Parker City Hall on White Street to see two new city officials sworn in: Utility Board Member Robert Barrios and Mayor-elect Teri Johnston. City Manager Jim Scholl oversaw the proceedings; Judge Peary S. Fowler officiated the ceremony; and former mayor Craig Cates was in the audience as a well-wisher.

Upon taking the podium after her swearing-in, Mayor Johnston offered a message of inclusivity and hope. She called her civic duty “an incredible responsibility,” vowing to represent the citizenry “no matter what color of skin, gender, or partner preference.” She challenged the crowd to take part in local government and to “rise up to help the Key West economy and residents.”

Johnston ended her address with a promise: “I am going to spend every second of the next two years proving you made the right choice.” She thanked the sitting commissioners, and after hugs and handshakes, she took her seat with them. Father John Baker provided a benediction at the close of the ceremony.

The ceremony was followed by refreshments outside the City Hall Building, where Commissioners Jimmy Weekley, Samuel Kaufman, Billy Wardlow, Greg Davila, Mary Lou Hoover, and Clayton Lopez gathered with attendees. The crowd enjoyed food and conversation in the Key West sunshine with elected officials new and old.

COFFEE BUTLER AND CLIFF SAWYER RELEASE NEW ALBUM

T

he story of the legendary Cuban collaborative album, The Buena Vista Social Club, is one of later-in-life renaissance. A group of musicians in their 70s, who had recorded since the ‘40s and ‘50s, decided to produce an album that served as a revival of pre-revolutionary Cuban music. Key West local producer and photographer Ralph De Palma made his pilgrimage there to visit the place where the famous 1996 album was recorded in Havana.

“It was a group of older musicians,” De Palma said. “It was like a perfect storm of music, and musicians, and talent, and no one was pushing to be the front man, and everyone was helping each other out.”

This is the parallel De Palma summons when describing the group of local musicians who have performed together as Coffee Butler and Friends. “It’s like Key West’s Buena Vista Social Club, and they are all family, and singing backup for each other. That’s why this music is so good.”

Now, the band is back together with Butler, including lifelong friend and collaborator Cliff Sawyer, “King of Key West Soul” Robert Albury, and cousins Clayton and Mina Lopez. The group, joined by other incredible local talent, will be performing at Key West Theater on Sunday, Nov. 25 to celebrate not only Butler’s 90th birthday, but also the release of Butler and Sawyer’s album “A Mother’s Love.”

It would be a dream come true for many musicians to put out an album at 70, let alone 90. But Coffee Butler isn’t living a dream — a life full of music has been his reality since childhood.

“I grew up listening to jazz and music and from over in Cuba,” Butler said. He describes his particular flavor “more or less like a blend.” Vocalist Cliff Sawyer has only enriched that blend.

“Cliff was maybe 20 years younger than me, but his mother thought she’d like him to follow behind me,” Butler said. “Cliff’s father was in our house like he was an uncle, we were that close.”

“There was a piano at my house,” Sawyer said. “I remember trying to reach up for the Keys, and my daddy said ‘shut that noise off.’” The two grew up between each other’s houses, making music and singing and going to church. Sawyer was a minister, singing gospel and conducting a prison ministry in Key West. Both credit Ellen Sanchez, a beloved teacher and pianist, as an inspiration. They also both served the country as young men in the Army: Butler in Korea, and Sawyer in Vietnam. Both returned to Key West.

“They made me minister of music of the Conch Republic for a while,” Butler said, “and when I retired, I gave it to Cliff.”

While in some ways the duo paints the most wholesome picture of music-making a person could imagine, the tale isn’t all sugar-coated. Just listen to Butler’s rousing song “Who Put the Pepper in the Vaseline,” or ask the man born “Lofton,” about the story behind his nickname “Coffee.”

“When I was going to play in the Bahamas,” he said, “(Hukilau owners) Alan and Linda Merrill said ‘You can’t say you’re called Coffee because you grind so fine — say it’s because you’re so stimulating.’”

Butler has become a living legend in his hometown of Key West, and he’s brushed with fame from the world over. One night at The Bamboo Room, “Tennessee Williams brought in Tallulah Bankhead over to meet me,” he said, “and I was sitting at the piano, and she said her name.” Butler, boldly, told her that he loved her, and Bankhead, with her signature wit and husky voice, replied, “Hush child, if you loved me, you’d have been dead a long time ago.”

When Butler was playing a set one night, a long-haired young musician approached him. “The big timer,” Butler recalls. (He means Jimmy Buffett.) “I remember when I was playing at Howie’s, and Jimmy Buffett asked me if he could come in and do the inbetween while I was playing. So he got up and played the breaks.”

“Coffee was so popular in town at the time,” said De Palma, “that the previous owner of Bamboo Room, who was selling the bar to Jim Holt, let the rumor go that Coffee was going to move from Howie’s Lounge down to the Bamboo Room, and it cost Jim more money to buy it.”

Indeed, Butler has helped put lounges like Howie’s and the Bamboo Room, as well as the Hukilau and Flagler’s at the Casa Marina, on the map. He’s also seen the town through the ups and downs of nearly a century.

There were significant downs, too.

Friend of Butler’s and jazz trumpet legend Fats Navarro died of a heroin overdose at only 27, prompting Butler to avoid those footsteps and stay closer to home.

“After I got out of the army,” he said, “Fats Navarro’s sister was a very good friend of mine, she was the girl next door, and he was three or four

years older. … I saw what happened to him and to a lot of musicians on the road,” he said. “I didn’t want to get involved with drugs or whatnot,” Butler said. “I occasionally have a vodka and orange juice.”

Navarro is an important key to the story: De Palma and Sawyer first crossed paths at a tribute to the late legend, held by John Vagnoni at the Green Parrot.

“I remember I met Ralph when I sang gospel at the Parrot,” Sawyer said. The image is one both divine and unexpected: the sweet sound of Sawyer singing gospel at one of the great gritty dive bars in America. The Parrot holds the memorial for Navarro annually: jazz musicians sit in, and it’s a fundraiser for the Bahama Village Music Program. “April 2019 will be the 10th year,” said Sawyer. Navarro’s grand-nephew has been in attendance in recent years, grandson of Butler’s old girlfriend who has since passed.

These intertwined lives come full circle with the release of “A Mother’s Love.” The album features covers of standards like “Misty” and “Unchained Melody,” as well originals like Butler’s “Norma Jean,” and “The Beautiful Isle of Key West,” by Ellen Sanchez.

The rich titular duet pays their mothers tribute, who were friends and church members together. Sawyer said, “It’s a wonder we make it through that song. I was crying, and I think Coffee added some more to it.” The team decided to do the album during one concert when Butler was at the grand piano, and Sawyer sat down to sing the duet. De Palma said, “It was gripping and emotional, and we had to record it.”

One can only imagine how proud their mothers would be.

t almost sounds made up, but it’s not. Key West local award-winning filmmaker Quincy Perkins was contacted by National Geographic last summer to create a documentary about distance runner Michele Graglia. Why would a long distance runner warrant hours of footage and months worth of work for a film? The truth is almost too incredible.

Michele Graglia at 34 is one of the best ultramarathoners in the world. Ultramarathons aren’t about hundreds of people running at the same time, the same distance. They are about running distances under extreme conditions regular athletes don’t normally endure. For Graglia, a regular daily run is 100 kilometers (62 miles) and if that’s nothing, ultramarathons have to be everything.

Italian born, Graglia is a former top fashion model (2 percent body fat and a face everyone can love) who happened to see a book on ultramarathoning and decided to give it a try. By 2018 he had won Badwater in California’s Death Valley: a 217 km/135 mile course that takes place in the heat of July, and he did it in 24:51:47. It’s billed as “the world’s toughest footrace.” But that honor wasn’t enough for Graglia, who has set his sights on the “4 Deserts,” the reason National Geographic wants Perkins to film every moment of Graglia’s journey.

Graglia will be running the Sahara (Africa), the Gobi (China), the Atacama (Chile) and The Last Desert (Antarctica). His goal is to break the record for each. He has already done it running the Atacama in 8 days, breaking the previous 20-day record. A little perspective on the Atacama? This is where NASA trained the rover for the Mars landing.

I ended up running 925km (roughly 575 miles) in 8 days, 12 hours and 50 minutes, averaging 67.5 miles a day (the shortest day was 54 miles, the longest was 71),” said Graglia on Facebook afterwards. “It was by far the most challenging endeavor I have ever undertook but what I learned is that only pushing the envelope you allow yourself to live fully, to find out how far you can actually go, and that there are no boundaries to what the human spirit can envision and ultimately achieve.”

“Nobody has ever run that many miles back to back. He only slept two hours a day. It was equal to three marathons a day; it was insane,” said Perkins.

The conditions included high altitude, sandy roads and left-over unexploded landmines from the Pacific war. A team of doctors and nutritionists followed Graglia, checking him every few kilometers while Perkins filmed. Perkins personally trained in order to run alongside Graglia in the high altitude, running upwards of 8k with him at a time.

“It was really an amazing adventure, watching what the human body can do, like watching Neil Armstrong land on the moon,“ said Perkins. At present, Perkins has two terabytes of footage from only one race. Next up: the scorching conditions of the Sahara Desert, and eventually, an amazing documentary.

n Nov. 11, the Key West Weekly was proud to report on the historic namesake visit made by crewmembers of the USS Key West submarine. The visit, the first of its kind in seven years, was hosted by the Key West Military Affairs Committee.

The crew, visiting from Guam, participated in the Veteran’s Day parade atop a replica of the USS Key West, while touring the city for over three days – including visits with city officials, KWHS and HOB Middle School.

ames Webb moved from Georgia to what is present-day Jackson County, southwest of Tallahassee, in 1823. The area became known as Webbville.

A lawyer by trade, he opened an office and became one of the first attorneys in Jackson County.

In 1827, he was elected to the Florida Territorial Legislative Council. The following year, Congress created a Federal Superior Court in Key West. For reasons unknown, President John Quincy Adams appointed Webb to become its first commissioned judge. Among his other duties was presiding over admiralty cases and the licensing of wreckers.

Webb would also travel to Indian Key to preside over cases.

He joined Dr. Henry Perrine and Charles Howe, both living on Indian Key, as partners in the Tropical Plant Company. Judge Webb retired from his Key West commission in 1839 and moved to Texas, becoming the attorney general of the Republic of Texas on November 18, 1839.

TALKING WITH ACTOR TOM BERENGER ctor Tom Berenger knew during filming that “Platoon” would be one of the most sensational war movies ever made. He played the main antagonist, a contentious and spine chilling Sergeant Bob Barnes, in the 1986 Vietnam war movie. Written and directed by Oliver Stone based on his own experiences, it included a cast that would produce Hollywood’s most notable actors such as Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tony Todd, John C. McGinley, Kevin Dillon, Mark Moses, Keith David and Forest Whitaker. The movie would go on to win four Academy Awards and gain Berenger a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

“This was a part I wanted to do; everyone thought it would be Willem Dafoe but really I wanted it,” said Berenger. “It wasn’t a big debate for me playing the bad sergeant because the role was so good.” With kind eyes, wavy gray hair and an affable nature, Berenger seems less like the crude character Barnes and more a Key Wester sporting a fishing shirt and looking for a good Cuban coffee.

Berenger came to Key West last weekend for the Key West Film Festival and to see his longtime friend, Mark Ebenhoch, another “Platoon” star, and attend the new documentary “Brothers in Arms,” a retrospective about the making of the film. Ebenhoch was hired

by Stone as a consultant rifleman from

the Marine Corps and acted in the film under his own name. Later he would star with Berenger in “Rough Riders” as well. Although more than 30 years ago, for both Berenger and Ebenhoch, it’s an easy time to recall.

“It was such an important experience,” agreed both men. Berenger remembers a great number of details about the time as well as becoming close with actors Mark Moses, Dale Dye and Francesco Quinn. He was one of the older, more experienced actors in the group but most of them had theater backgrounds and took the task seriously.

As for director Stone, Berenger marveled at his ability to imagine such a film.

“Stone was smart enough to trust the actors’ improv — that’s how the line ‘tag ‘em and bag ‘em’ got in there. We learned the slang and then even made up our own; if Stone liked it, it stayed,”

said Berenger. The character Sergeant Barnes would also popularize the phrases “lock and load” and “Everybody’s gotta die sometime, Red.” “Stone worked incredibly fast, two to three takes and we would move on.

He just trusted us and let us push the limits.” Nothing was more of an example than when Berenger as Barnes held a gun to a young girl’s head. This gut-wrenching scene always held a stigma for Berenger and at the KWFF, a surprise visit by Le Thanh Van, the then 12-year-old-girl who is now Edith “Erika” Thomas, reunited them on stage. The outcome was a cathartic moment for Berenger, who finally put to rest uneasy feelings about shooting the scene with a gun to her head.

Berenger, Ebenhoch and many of the original cast members were excited when Paul Sanchez created “Brothers in Arms” to look back, but also to capture what it’s like to make a truly great film.

WATER INSPIRES ARTIST Pasta set for live performance at Ocean Fest JIM McCARTHY

H

e gravitated toward the water tanks. His attention was drawn to the seaside. Water always seemed to be Italianborn marine artist Pasta Pantaleo’s mantra in life.

Pasta is set to perform onstage during Mote’s Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Founders Park. His creation will be auctioned off during the event. Pasta says he’s looking forward to the upcoming inaugural festival.

“I think the word ‘ocean’ in Ocean Fest says it all for me. It’s everything,” he said. “The science and the stewardship of the oceans are probably the next biggest thing we have to worry about.”

For Pasta, the sea represented an escape from his urban life in an Italian Brooklyn neighborhood during his teenage years. He eventually moved with his family to South Florida. There, he became a world-class airbrush artist who did custom paint jobs for cars.

In 2001, Pasta entered a new realm as he created a canvas painting for Jamie Bunn of Bluewater Movements for his professional fishing tournament series. His first painting, known as “Everybody is Gonna Be There,” was displayed on fishing posters, and it struck the attention of the public so much that they wondered who did it.

“The mystery and the beauty of the water always seemed to be a cool factor for me,” Pasta told the Weekly during a recent interview. “I made a life’s work to try and live that out, and it actually ended up happening. I’m pretty blessed.”

Pasta says it feels like he’s been in the Keys since the beginning. He spent his first night in the Keys in 1970 in a house behind his gallery at 81599 Old Hwy. At age 12, he went fishing with a local Conch character in Barracuda Al.

A SINGER-SONGWRITER STYLE Pasta works in various styles and disciplines. He says he’ll go from abstract impressionism and pop art to some realism and many different palettes. When people ask him about his styles, he says he’s more like a singersongwriter.

“I’ve always coined myself as that as far as painting goes, as opposed to someone who’s stuck on one thing,” he said. “If you listen to Tom Petty or the Beatles, they all experimented. They all tried different things. They all kept growing and growing. They just didn’t rely on their hit to make a living. I think that’s a true art.”

Pasta says living as an artist in Islamorada fits as much as the art fits his brain waves and thought process.

“This is my Italian fishing village. I was born in one,” he said. “It is the next best thing for me. To me this is like it.”

Pasta says he’s beginning to see things in a way he’s never seen before.

At 60, he says he’s just now starting to see paintings he’s looking forward to.

A NEW WAVE: A NEW VIBE Pasta says he finds himself enjoying the younger generation more as he peers into a new wave of creativity. Sitting back and watching the artists and the musicians, he says the osmosis of the island takes young kids and gives them enough creativity.

“A lot of musicians who play, the youth get to see they’re doing it for a living,” he said. “They get to see me making a living and the guitarist make a living.”

Pasta says he’s proud of the neighborhood’s transformation. He also gave a shout-out to one of his comrades in guitarist Dave Feder.

“He crosses over besides just music of what artists and lifestyle live like, which I practice as much as I can,” Pasta said. “Dave’s a conduit to the community. We’ve always had a strong connection without hanging out together.”

What are your plans after high school? After high school, I plan to cheer at any college I end up going to and study hospitality.

What do you hope to be remembered for at KWHS? I hope to be remembered as a friendly face that was willing to help everyone and anyone.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? Tumbling at my job.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? No, but I will still be close to home. I plan to live in South Miami because of the numerous opportunities there.
