That’s Democrat Bill Nelson’s final tally on the machine re-count, examination of provisional ballots and vote-by-mail ballots, by the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections office. When the Keys’ unofficial results were released the morning after the election, Nelson had 18,020 — one vote less than Republican Rick Scott. The statewide recount is underway to determine official results.

Volunteers and crews spent this past Monday and Tuesday putting up the Christmas tree outside the Murray Nelson Government Center. Volunteers worked on the bottom of the tree while the electrical co-op finished off the top of the tree.

elebrating the marine environmental all while raising funds to a good cause: an upcoming festival in Islamorada is preparing to educate, entertain and excite the public about Mote Marine Laboratory’s impact in the Upper Keys.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, water enthusiasts, families and visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy the activities and events associated with Mote’s Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration. It’s part of an annual outreach to raise awareness of the marine laboratory’s work on coral reef research and restoration, along with its dozen-plus research programs and work of partner environmental organizations.

The family-friendly event, which takes place at Founders Park, includes crafts, games, music, food and more. Proceeds from the event will directly help fund coral research and restoration programs, and those attending will learn and understand the continuous work to protect the land and sea.

“There’s something for everyone to enjoy, between the kid’s zone, interactive booths and live entertainment,” said Olivia Hammon, event organizer.

Starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m., the event will feature a variety of activities. For children, a free fishing clinic will be provided with assistance from Boy Scouts. Children will learn how to reel and other different fishing techniques. The first 50 kids will get a free rod and reel.

Face painting, arts and crafts tents will also keep children busy, as will a rock-climbing wall. In addition, children will be able to take part in a scavenger hunt where they’ll collect stickers from various booths. Prizes will be presented once they complete their adventure.

Conservation vendors at the event will have hands-on activities for all ages. Attendees can come and learn how coral is planted, interact with live animals and experience touch tanks. There will also be an opportunity to meet Mote scientists and researchers as well as environmental and conservation groups from Florida.

Food vendors and trucks will be on hand, and Islamorada Beer Company is the official beer sponsor. Four live bands will be performing during the event. They include Emily Springsteen, Pasta & Lower Mat Cats, Lady A Band and Howard Livingston & MM 24 Band. In addition, Roberto Pasta Pantaleo will be painting live on stage. The resulting piece will be auctioned at the event.

Those coming to the event who bring a reusable cup will be provided free water all day. Those who get a reusable cup for their beer will obtain a discount.

“What we really want to push is awareness in conservation,” Hammon said. “We want to encourage everyone to be conservation minded, bring cups and do our best to limit the waste we produce.”

One day before Ocean Fest, there will be an unveiling of Mote’s Coral Reef Exploration Exhibit at the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center. The exhibit will be an important education tool to bring collectively to the community as relationships grow in the Keys.

Give thanks for our coral reefs in Islamorada After Thanksgiving, Mote Marine Laboratory will again give thanks for all of the wonderful support for our mission in the Florida Keys by launching the inaugural Islamorada Ocean Fest: A Community Celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 1 at Founders Park.

We invite the entire Islamorada community and communities throughout the upper Keys to join in celebrating and supporting a mission dear to Mote: coral reef research, restoration and education in the Florida Keys and around the world. Mote’s Islamorada Ocean Fest will unite community members, local organizations and businesses to benefit our oceans, building upon eight years of very successful Ocean Fests in Key West.

Mote is an independent, nonprofit marine science institution founded in 1955 in southwest Florida and dedicated to today’s research for tomorrow’s oceans. We established our first Florida Keys campus in 1993 and most recently expanded our science and conservation impact by creating the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration on Summerland Key. Mote scientists are untangling the complexities of coral health and disease, reef resilience to the global threat of climate change, and more. With our firm foundation in science, Mote and its partners have planted more than 43,000 corals to restore Florida’s reefs, and during the last two years, the state of Florida awarded a total of $1 million for Mote to plant 50,000 more corals.

Now these efforts matter more than ever.

Florida’s coral reefs are experiencing a devastating, multi-year outbreak of an unidentified coral disease, requiring an unprecedented response effort from Mote, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and many other partners.

e was drawn into politics when Islamorada was going to be incorporated. The population was split on the idea, and Chris Sante was originally against it due to the way it was presented. However, when the village bought a valuable piece of property in Yacht Harbor, he changed his mind.

Sante, who served the village for the last 10 years, is beginning to work on some projects of his own, and he’s also hoping to take some needed vacation time. The Weekly recently spoke with Sante about his time in village government and his plans now that he’s on to a new adventure.

Age: 63 Hometown: Miami Was there a moment that led you to decide not to seek another term? No, after 10 years my wife and I want to start traveling and taking some time off but I felt my duties as mayor would inhibit that.

Was the decision in not seeking another term at all difficult? Yes, I am done serving now, but I wish I would have started earlier in life as I did enjoy serving.

How would you describe your last 10 years in office? I felt I made a difference in the village and was proud to serve. I feel my knowledge of business helped many times. The last meeting saved $50,000 in fees.

How has Islamorada progressed in the last decade? It was a rocky road at first, lots of issues with sewer, managers and general problems of a new city, but my last two years have been great, we are moving forward with great projects and staff. This is clear by the way the village handled the hurricane.

What challenges still remain? Budget issues to fund these challenges, workforce housing, the pending state mandated rate of growth that says we run out of permits in 2023, stormwater and the demand for better service.

What’s in store for you once your time as a councilman is over?

I plan to actively seek more land to build workforce housing as well as my own projects and of course spending some time on vacation.

Who’s been your biggest support throughout your time? My wife. No one can do this job without the support of their spouse. I also have lots of great residents that have known me a long time and supported me.

Is there a project or type of action that council took that you look back on fondly? Sending the sewer to Key Largo because of the money we saved.

What’s one thing people don’t know about you? Sante is not my real name, it is Sfreddo. It was changed when my grandfather came to Ellis Island.

What are some hobbies of yours that you’re looking to do more of? My hobby has been work for so long I am looking forward to new ones. Would like to start spearfishing again. Also spend more time riding my motorcycle.

When did you come to the Keys? My dad was a lobster fisherman and I worked here until I was 12. We lived in Miami and I lived there until January 1983 when I came back to work in the mortgage business.

What did you think you were going to be when you grew up? I had so many jobs I lost count looking for the right one. I had lots of jobs I never wanted to do. I never had an idea but I knew I had to find something I liked if I was going to do it for the next 20 or 30 years.

Who was your role model at a young age? My mom, single mom with five kids, worked all the time but I thought it was normal. I think I got my work ethic from her.

She had a hard life but it never stopped her.

If you go anywhere in the world, where would that be? Bora Bora, Tahiti or Madagascar and, of course, space.

What’s one food you love to eat on Thanksgiving? Turkey but it puts me to sleep so I opt for ham.

What’s your favorite movie?

“Long Kiss Goodnight.”

Do you have a life motto? Everything comes to he who waits, as long as you work like hell while you wait.

If you could meet anyone in the world, who would that be?

Bill Gates because of his philanthropic work Do you have any words of wisdom for council moving forward? Keep an open mind. Some of the problems that past council had was the fact that some council members could not change their mind regardless of the facts.

Do you think you’ll ever consider running for office in the future? No! It’s time for new people to carry on.

Four veterans recently gathered in Islamorada for an excursion as part of Operation Wet Vet, which was founded by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Osvaldo “Ozzie” Martinez. The Miami nonprofit helps veterans dealing with PTSD by taking them out fishing. Veterans sailed the day with JL Audio, a Miramar manufacturer of boat, car and home sound systems.

“The operation was created out of personal need,” said Martinez, who was deployed twice to Iraq and is 100 percent Service-Connected Disabled Veteran for PTSD. “I needed a way to get out and let go of everything, to reunite with former veterans who served in combat and talk about our experiences.”

‘IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY, BUT IT’S WORTH IT’ November is Adoption Month

hey are doing so well,” said “new” mom Treecy Montaque of her twin 6-yearold sons, Isaiah and Maui.

“I am very proud of them for adjusting so easily.”

The twins, who were both diagnosed with autism, had been living with their three older siblings in foster care for six years in the Keys. Montaque, who is related to the biological mother and the father, and her mother, Verline Williams-Stinton, 67, were able to legally adopt the five children between their two homes.

“I had lost a baby,” said Montaque, whose family is originally from Marathon, “and my mother and I had taken the PRIDE classes so this was just a natural fit.” PRIDE is an acronym for Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education—they help support and educate “foster, adoptive, and kinship resource families.” The children were legally adopted in April.

The older siblings, Christopher, Malaea, and Naomi, said they were grateful for their experiences in foster care with Lori and Norm Stikes in Key West. “We are happy they kept us all together,” said Christopher, 13.

Lori Stikes said her and her husband Norm’s goal is to keep siblings together and give them the stability they need. The two are semi-retired with six adult biological children and 11 grandkids. Right now, they are fostering three sets of two siblings at their home. “It’s such a hard time for them; we know splitting them up would just make it worse,” she said.

She said it’s the calls she receives from the older kids that makes fostering worth it, “You know you are making a difference when you look at their faces at the end of the day and see a smile.”

Norm agreed, speaking of some of the younger children.

“They may not remember me, but I will never forget them,” he said.

As for the Montaque/WilliamsStinton family, they say Malaea has made the most progress. She was suffering from emotional distress and outbursts. Now, with her service dog, Obie, she’s done a complete 360. It helps that as a professional, Montaque teaches and tutors children with severe disabilities in an ESE instructional program, and her mother is a retired educator of special needs children.

Montaque shared her morning.

“I usually tell the boys to ‘get yourself together’ when we are trying to leave in the mornings. This morning, I couldn’t find my glasses and they were right on top of my head, when Isaiah told me ‘get yourself together, Mama’.”

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Wesley House Family Services is hosting a private event for adoptive families in the Keys on Saturday to celebrate the families. “Most adults who can provide a stable, loving home for a child or children can adopt,” said Lindsey Batterman, adoption supervisor at Wesley House. Keys History & Discovery Center will reopen on Dec. 1 Keys History & Discovery Center remains closed temporarily due to the extensive road construction at the Islander Resort, the property on which the Discovery Center is located. The center will reopen on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Jim McCarthy named bureau chief of Upper Keys Weekly

J

im McCarthy has joined the Keys Weekly Newspapers as bureau chief of the Tavernier office, which covers Key Largo to Islamorada.

A 26-year-old Western New York native, his love for Florida and the Keys stems from his past visits with family.

McCarthy studied at St. Bonaventure University, where he obtained a bachelor’s in journalism and mass communications in May 2014. There, he worked at the school’s newspaper and the St. Bonaventure Sports Information Department.

After graduation, he spent four years working for two daily newspapers south of Buffalo in Chautauqua County. McCarthy spent much of his time reporting on the community, the political arena and the business scene.

With intentions to make Florida his next adventure, McCarthy settled into his home in Islamorada just recently.

McCarthy says he’s ecstatic about the opportunity to report on all the happenings in the community and the great people who make it very special.

“We couldn’t have found a better writer, or person, to report on the news in the Upper Keys,” said publisher Jason Koler. “He understands the importance of covering local politics, supporting charitable causes and developing professional relationships.”

McCarthy joins a fast-growing staff that spans three offices across the Florida Keys. Locally owned and operated, the Weekly was established in 2003 and is now the largest publishing group in Monroe County – producing three weekly community newspapers, festival programs for events like the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, annual reports, and specialty magazines like Keys Woman and the Holidays in the Keys.

The Upper Keys was full of activity this past weekend. From a bridge run to a chili cook-off, many people came out to take part in all the fun. With the holidays nearing, the Weekly asked event attendees...

Fishing guide and star of Discovery Channel’s “The Fish Guyz” Capt. George Clark Jr.’s birthday falls very close to Thanksgiving. “It’s an easy one: Pumpkin pie with a lot of whipped cream. I mean lots of pumpkin pie. You watch football, you have your dinner, and then it’s time for lots of pumpkin pie.”

WHAT’S YOUR THANKSGIVING GUILTY PLEASURE?

Bobby Wallace never eats potatoes and carbs much any more. On Thanksgiving, however, that’s a different story. “I will go ham on the potato salad,” he said.

For Cheryl Powers, owner of Sea Tow Key Largo, it’s the number of celebrations. “I have three Thanksgivings. The first one is Friendsgiving, the second is with my family and my last one is on Thanksgiving. That and drinking some whiskey punch.”

Bonnie Macks noted something a little different than food. “It’s a time to spend with family and friends.

That’s what I enjoy the most about Thanksgiving.”

Karl Bursa and his son Liam like to gobble up two foods in particular. “I eat stuffing by the pound,” Karl said. “I make a complete fool out of myself.” For Liam, his favorite is turkey. “I’ll eat any kind of turkey,” he said.

Rotary gift brings defibrillator to school The Rotary Club of Key Largo helped fund the purchase of a defibrillator for Ocean Studies Charter School in Tavernier. The gift was personally matched by Patricia Thompson, director of school safety & security for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “Thank you,” said Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Patricia O’Keefe, who coordinated the donation. “You have assisted in providing a much-needed safety item for one of our smaller schools.”

HONORING A COMMUNITY ICON Street named after Wampler

C

ontributions to the Florida Sea Base and community by Sam Wampler were honored and recognized Friday as family and friends gathered for a special moment. With the yank of a cover, Wampler Way was unveiled.

Mike Johnson, general manger for the Florida Sea Base, told the crowd the street they chose was part of Wampler’s vision. When the Sea Base was started in 1980, it was on a shoestring budget and staff housing was a challenge. As the Sea Base grew, staff would live off base or in cramped quarters.

Wampler served as the director of the Florida Sea Base for 22 years from its inception to his death in 2002. Johnson noted that his legacy in the Florida Keys and the Boy Scouts of America is one of service and dedication to family and the community.

“Sam had a vision that someday there would be staff housing on the property with the benefit being staff on campus would be more engaged,” Johnson said.

“This came to fruition in the fall of 2016 when Paul Beal was general manager.”

The Florida Sea Base began as the “Florida Gateway to High Adventure” in the mid to late 1970s as it provided sailing and diving programs from the Miami/ Fort Lauderdale area to the Keys and Bahamas. Working with Boy Scouts and other organizations, Johnson said, Wampler realized an opportunity for young people to get out and enjoy ocean adventures. Scouts would meet Wampler at the dock, where they went to a warehouse to get geared up, get on a boat and come down to the Florida Keys. Scouts would leave at the end of the trip with a patch and mug.

Operating out of a rented warehouse and a station wagon, Johnson said the program’s popularity created the need for a facility. With a grant of $1.3 million from the now-defunct Fleischmann Foundation, the Sea Base bought the Toll Gate Inn at MM 73.8 on Lower Matecumbe Key. Serving 300 young individuals during its inception, the Florida Sea Base is expected to serve more than 16,000 participants in 2019. Tim Stanfill, Sea Base director of program operations, said programs are serving individuals not only in the Keys but also the Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix, and at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas.

“We are putting rented vessels into action and providing an outstanding world-class opportunity for young men and women,” he said.

“The end result is we want to make a profound difference in the lives of those young people.”

Sharon Wampler said the unveiling was incredible for Sam, the family and herself. She also noted how many individuals and staff who came through the Florida Sea Base come back.

“It’s amazing that all these people come back and remember the Sea Base fondly,” she said. “Sam’s up there with his Manhattan and his cigarette and he’s going ‘That a boy.’”

eynolds Cothron was born in Blackshear, Georgia on Christmas Day 1866. He married Mary Emma Davis in 1893. By the turn of the century, Cothron was working as a section foreman for the Florida East Coast Railway. He was living with his growing family in Lemon City, a suburb of Miami recognized today as Little Haiti. In the early summer months of 1909, the Cothrons moved to the Lower Keys where Reynolds began working on the Niles Channel Bridge. It would link Henry Flagler’s train from Ramrod to Sugarloaf keys.

A hurricane destroyed their new home in October. The Cothrons moved to the Upper Keys. The 1910 census shows the family living on Upper Matecumbe Key. By the time the 1920 census was taken, the Cothrons were listed as farmers growing Key limes, tomatoes, and cantaloupes. They had purchased a large frame house built

by Cephus Pinder whose father was Richard, the original Matecumbe Pinder. The house stood on what is today the property of the Islander Resort.

Cannon, wreckage found in Upper Keys waters

lorida Keys National Marine Sanctuary investigated two new discoveries in the Upper Keys that were reported in October.

Sail Fish Scuba owner Jennifer Kerr found a cannon on Elbow Reef off Key Largo while diving the shipwreck Hannah M. Bell.

Sanctuary marine archaeologists believe it and a similar cannon nearby were likely jettisoned from a sinking ship crashing on the reef more than 100 years before Hannah M. Bell sank in 1911.

Fisherman Jose Antonio Lopez Ruiz of Homestead is credited with finding wooden wreckage from an unidentified 19th-century sailing ship near Alligator Reef. A visit to the site by the sanctuary’s maritime heritage team revealed a more than 50-foot section of wooden planks and frames partially buried in sand.

Kerr and Lopez Ruiz recognized that they should not move, damage or disturb their finds, so they contacted the sanctuary. Providing location and descriptive information to the sanctuary creates an opportunity for study of artifacts that contribute to the Florida Keys’ rich maritime history. Both new discoveries will be the subject of further investigation but will not be removed from sanctuary waters.

efore you dive into some pumpkin pie, join the History of Diving Museum’s dive into the Mediterranean Sea in search of a lost World War II naval ship. November’s “Immerse Yourself” speaker, Chris Kraska, will take guests on the search to find the Polish naval ship his father was stationed on.

Kraska’s father was a seaman in the Polish Navy and served aboard several ships in combat, including the escort destroyer ORP Kujawiak. While running missions off the coast of Malta during Operation Harpoon in June 1942, the Kujawiak heard a distress call from another vessel. When the Kujawiak went to assist, it too struck an underwater mine and sank. For decades the ship’s exact location in the Mediterranean was unknown. In 2014, Kraska was part of a multi-national team of divers and archaeologists in conjunction with the University of Malta, which located his father’s ship. Over the next few years they returned to the site, making several dives to map the wreckage and document the condition. In 2017, the team raised the ship’s bell for conservation and display at the Maritime Museum of Malta.

Kraska is a marine archaeologist, divemaster and underwater photographer with hundreds of dives in warm waters as well as on Lake Erie. He is a member of numerous maritime archaeology organizations as well as the Explorers Club and Royal Geographical Society. His archaeological work has taken him around the world, including excavation on the wreck believed to be the “Lake Serpent” in Lake Erie. Kraska splits his time between Florida and Ohio with his wife Laurie.

The History of Diving Museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Immerse Yourself! Series, on the third Wednesday of the month, is a free presentation open to the public.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My all-time favorite teacher is Mrs. Wischmeier. She has been teaching me math since my freshman year and I’ve always felt like I’m learning a lot as her student. She’s also very kind and a funny person.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education is one that combines basic concepts like math, science and reading but also teaches basic life skills. One top of that, a good education is one that teaches kids about the world and other cultures and people.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The dumbest rule at school is not being able to listen to music. The best is putting phones up in the chat.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? One thing I know now that I didn’t know my freshman year is how much easier school was back then.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I am involved in varsity swimming and tennis. These sports are important to me because I can perform my best and support my other teammates and form new friendships each season. I am also part of UNICEF club, Interact Club and Math Club.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I hope to be remembered for being a funny and intelligent student who always had a good time and radiated positive vibes.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I love to scuba dive.

It’s a great way to get out on the water and be in touch with the environment.

Will you make the Keys you permanent home? Why or why not? I don’t think I’ll make the Keys my permanent home. I love to travel and feel at home in many places, so I don’t want to be permanently settled in one place my whole life.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? 1. Graduate from a university 2. Travel the world 3. Build a successful career.

At Island Community Church in Islamorada, MM 83.2, church members and Island Christian School students will delivery turkey dinners with side dishes the week of Thanksgiving to people and shelters from Key Largo south to Marathon.

MIDDLE KEYS In Marathon, join St. Columba Episcopal Church at 451 52nd St. bayside, behind the Panda House restaurant, for its annual holiday service at noon on Thanksgiving Day followed by a full turkey dinner.

At the Grace Jones Community Center, parents are welcomed for a Thanksgiving luncheon on Nov. 15 (today). Also, 65 children will be sent home with backpacks filled with nutritious food through the center’s Backpacks 4 Kids program.

Volunteers at Keys Area Interdenominational Resources at the Community United Methodist Church, MM 48.5 bayside, will pack Thanksgiving bundles for those in need and distribute them the weekend before the holiday.

About 300 clients sign up annually for this anonymous program, according to Marjorie Roberts, executive director of KAIR, and she requests people sign up early by calling 305-743-4582.

mells of chili and barbecue filled the air at Riva Motorsports & Marine of the Keys during its annual Charity BBQ Throwdown Event and Chili Cook-off. Amateur BBQ and chili cook-off masters were busy as they prepared their food.

Judges waited in anticipation for the chili while attendees went around to get a taste of each one.

Funds raised from the event went to assist in the purchase of new technology equipment for Treasure Village Montessori.
