he audience should arrive ready to be entertained. That’s director Dale Coburn’s advice.

“It’s a farce. It’s fun. They’re going to laugh,” he said.

Ken Ludwig’s “Leading Ladies” opens on Thursday, Nov. 15 at Marathon Community Theatre. Additional show dates are Nov. 16-17, Nov. 23-25, Nov. 29-Dec. 1, Dec. 6-8 with a curtain at 8 p.m. and a matinee scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25.

“Leading Ladies” is set in York, Pennsylvania in the 1950s. Two down-on-their-luck Shakespearean actors decide to pose as long-lost relatives of an ailing heiress. When Leo Clark (John Schaefer) and Jack Gable (Coburn) learn about the search for “Max” and “Steve,” they concoct a scheme to pass themselves off as her nephews. The extra laughs come when the two nephews are actually nieces and Leo and Jack resort to dressing in drag.

“They may, or may not be, great actors,” said Coburn. “But it’s still their dream.”

utgoing City of Marathon mayor Michelle Coldiron began her last meeting with strong words, rebuking Marathon City Councilman Mark Senmartin for placing an item on the agenda entitled “Councilmember Zieg’s Election Video.”

Coldiron said, “I’m disappointed that this has remained on the agenda.

Some of us have worked hard to keep civility on this dais. Bickering makes our city look unprofessional. The election video has nothing to do with running the city; it’s a personal vendetta.”

The video in question was an endorsement for Coldiron in her bid for County Commission, made by Marathon Councilman Dan Zieg. In it, he’s pictured sitting on the city hall dais, directly under the city seal. In mid-October, the video generated an anonymous complaint. The State Attorney ruled it wasn’t illegal because Zieg didn’t indicate he was speaking on behalf of the city, or anyone else; also, because the City of Marathon has never officially adopted its seal.

Later, after Coldiron had accepted a token goodbye gift, and Luis Gonzalez and incumbent Senmartin were sworn into office, the agenda item was heard.

“Having been the victim of nasty campaign attacks, I may be a little sensitive,” Senmartin said. “And it’s not just me. I heard this from other candidates.

I can’t just sweep this under the carpet.

I’m hoping we can learn some lessons as a city and most definitely as candidates for future years. I suppose there is enough blame to go around. Failure to adopt the city seal is a mistake. It should be obvious to all that personal

endorsements should not be filmed or made while sitting on the dais, while sitting under the seal. I am seeking consensus from the council to make that happen.”

“Are you objecting to the use of the seal?” Zieg asked, “in a promotion video?”

“Yes,” Senmartin replied.

“In an official capacity, as a representative? On city property?” Zieg asked.

“Within the chambers, yes,” said Senmartin.

At that point, Zieg directed city staff to play a video.

“Oh, there’s an entertainment package that goes with this?” Senmartin asked.

The video compilation showed several instances of Senmartin and one of former Councilman Bill Kelly, wearing a T-shirt embroidered with the city seal, and/or filming on city property in campaign videos or ads. According to city officials, Zieg provided the video to staff before the start of the meeting.

At that point, Mayor John Bartus called for order.

‘We are not going to go down to this level,” Bartus said. He then assumed partial responsibility as one of the town founders for never formally adopting the seal. The council asked staff to begin work on a way to adopt the seal formally, and research laws and legal cases that would restrict its use – for example, by a candidate seeking election or re-election.

In other news: • Bids will go out soon for reconstruction of Sombrero Beach, with work expected to begin in January and be complete — with the exception of beach re-nourishment — by Fourth of July. The work has been “obligated” by FEMA, meaning it promises eventually to reimburse the city.

• Work on the Aviation Boulevard bike trail will begin in late January.

• The council approved a conditional use and development agreement for the GEM Homes LLC project located on the west end of the Marathon Airport, comprising nine affordable units and six market rate homes.

The project was rejected earlier due to traffic concerns at the corner of Aviation Boulevard and Overseas Highway.

The council approved the project, in part, because of the state’s agreement to fix the intersection.

A party for Marathon ‘angels’ to raise Santa money The public is invited to a special “Presents in Paradise” fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Plaza Grill. There will be music, a raffle for season tickets to the Marathon Community Theater, some prizes donated by The Home Depot, and an ugly Christmas sweater or ugly Christmas T-shirt contest. Presents in Paradise aims to help about 200 children this year with gifts from “Santa.”

Presents in Paradise has been assisting families throughout the Keys at Christmas for 14 years. They gift bikes, athletic gear, art supplies, clothing, shoes and educational games. The recipients remain anonymous throughout the process.

Tickets to the event, $30 each, help fund the effort, as do private donations.

Kayak tours benefit wildlife refuge Monthly kayak tours that let participants watch the sun set while the full moon rises will resume next week.

The Florida Keys Wildlife Society (formerly FAVOR) will resume the tours on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The easy-going paddle goes from Big Pine Key along the mangrove shoreline of No Name Key. Sponsored by and departing from Big Pine Kayak Adventures, the tours’ proceeds benefit local wildlife through the Florida Keys Wildlife Society, the official friends group for the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges.

The $25 donation includes kayak, gear and experienced guide. No experience is necessary. Reservations may be made by phone or text to Captain Bill at 305-872-7474 for reservations.

Plan to bring a flashlight, drinking water, and arrive a half-hour before launch time.

MARATHON HISTORY

T

he Spanish once called Duck Key “chinche.” Chinche translates to bug and is used as a slang term for bed bug. The island would get less gross names. In 1772, it was labeled Reynolds Island.

George Gauld noted the island as Duck Key in 1775. He also identified the island as a freshwater source, though the source has since run dry.

The 1842 “American Coast Pilot” noted the island as Cayo Holandes or Dutch Key. Charles Howe, who purchased the island in 1827, was the first to put it to use. Howe would use the island to manufacture salt by creating salt ponds. In 1828, J.W. Norie wrote of the island, “Duck Key, some two miles long, low, rocky, & covered with mangroves; some small patches of good land with a little timber. This island formerly saltworks, but they were transferred latterly to Key West, owned by Mr. Howe, who is also possessor of this Key.” Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

Take Stock in Children - Monroe Take Stock in Children provides a unique opportunity for deserving students from economically challenged households to escape the cycle of poverty through education.

The Take Stock scholar meets with a caring volunteer mentor each week, usually during lunch, and benefits from the guidance of a skilled college success coach through middle and high school. To remain in the program, the student is expected to maintain A’s, B’s, and C’s, good attendance, and good behavior each quarter, and continue to meet weekly with his or her mentor. The student will receive access to a Florida Prepaid college tuition scholarship upon graduating from high school. The scholarship covers all tuition and local fees towards the attainment of a bachelor’s degree.

Established in 1999, Program Coordinator Chuck Licis says the key to success is the dedicated group of 275 volunteer mentors who meet weekly with the scholars, who guide the students and help them learn valuable self-advocacy skills. He also said the skilled college success coaches, four Keyswide, also meet regularly with the students and offer workshops on study skills, test preparation, college applications and financial aid.

Take Stock in Children is always looking for volunteer mentors to meet weekly with a student in the program. The program is in 10 middle and high schools in Monroe County.

Where to volunteer, or find a turkey dinner

T

hroughout the island chain, charitable and religious organizations will open their doors before and on Thanksgiving, providing several opportunities to celebrate the holiday or volunteer.

MIDDLE KEYS In Marathon, join St. Columba Episcopal Church at 451 52nd St. bayside, behind the Panda House restaurant, for its annual holiday service at noon on Thanksgiving Day followed by a full turkey dinner. It’s a potluck community dinner except the turkey and ham, which is provided by the church. Call 305-7436412.

At the Grace Jones Community Center, parents are welcome for a Thanksgiving luncheon on Nov. 15. Also, 65 children will be sent home with backpacks filled with nutritious food through the center’s Backpacks 4 Kids program.

Volunteers at Keys Area Interdenominational Resources at the Community United Methodist Church, MM 48.5 bayside, will pack Thanksgiving bundles for those in need and distribute them the weekend before the holiday.

About 300 clients sign up annually for this anonymous program, according to Marjorie Roberts, executive director of KAIR, and she requests people sign up early by calling 305-743-4582.

UPPER KEYS Burton Memorial United Methodist Church at MM 93 holds its annual luncheon on Thanksgiving at 1 p.m. It’s open to the community and free.

At Island Community Church in Islamorada, MM 83.2, church members and Island Christian School students will deliver turkey dinners with side dishes the week of Thanksgiving to people and shelters from Key Largo south to Marathon.

The church asks people to sign up early by emailing churchinfo@islandchristian.org or calling 305-664-4933.

Provide the name, phone number and address of the person whom the delivery is for and number of meals needed.

The First Baptist Church of Islamorada at MM 81.2 celebrates Thanksgiving at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20. About 150 families will be served. It is a weekly dinner open to the community.

LOWER KEYS Keys Vineyard Community Church on Big Pine Key will host its Night of Thanks dinner on Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. According to the church’s Facebook page, there will be plenty of food, a concert and dessert. Call 305-782-3404 for more information.

In Key West, dinner will not be served at St. Martha’s Ministry, 1010 Windsor Lane.

“But we prepare a Thanksgiving dinner and bring it out to KOTS (Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter) on Stock Island,” said Mary Leen, director of the St. Martha’s soup kitchen. “We serve between 100 and 120 people a day, so I’m not sure if Thanksgiving will be any different.”

ROCKERAMA ’60s rock show benefits Aquarium’s hammerhead project

O

n Saturday night, Dec. 1, Aquarium Encounters in Marathon will present its “Aquarium ’60s Rockerama” — a live rock and roll show featuring exclusively 1960s music on stage teamed with projected music videos of the original artists performing those very same songs up on the big screen.

This audio-visual experience in 1960s rock music is a fundraiser to assist R3EACH & The Great Hammerhead Project — an Aquarium program studying the survival challenges of the great hammerhead shark, which has been disappearing over the years from Keys waters.

Rhythm guitarist Forrest Young, co-founder of the Aquarium, and his lead guitarist Richard Warner have assembled for this concert/dance program, The “Aquarium Band,” with some of the foremost local rock performers in the Keys, such as John Bartus, Adrienne Z, Lesley Aaron, Bill “Harmonica Man” Heffernan and drummer Joe Moreira. The show also features Kelly Warner on the bass (formerly of the noted web rockers The LabRats), with Crissy Kafer on the congas (who was the lead singer for White Fox, which opened for KC and the Sunshine Band and other top-name performers back in the ’70s), and also JP Goldman (who is the lead singer of the famed “Womps”).

Young describes the show as a sort of “College of 1960s Rock” for everyone who loves the high-energy music from that great decade of pop. He said only the radio hits of the ’60s will be performed in the loud and boisterous dance hall style of that era — with no digital gimmicks, no programming, no pre-recording or even board balancing. It’s just plug and play amps and hope for the best.

Above the stage will be a large screen where the audience will view, as each song is performed, video clips of the original artists doing the very same song in the ’60s.

This will include period music videos (some of the earliest ever made), film clips from the movies in which the performers appeared, TV shows where they performed, and other obscure visuals. Warner, the film maker of “Wilma the Witch,” “Marathon After Midnight” and other Keysbased movies, is producing the visuals for this event.

Warner said he has found many obscure visual scenes of these bands he never knew existed and seeing these great performers come alive on the big screen after all these years is a bit spooky, since so many of them are no longer alive.

The program will range from the songs of the British Invasion, such as from the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Kinks, to the American “Summer Of Love” Bay Area bands like Jefferson Airplane and Creedence Clearwater Revival, to Motown superstars like The Supremes, Wilson Pickett and Ray Charles.

Caution: It will be a loud and intense audio-visual experience. Also, no one under the age of 21 will be admitted and ID is required. There will be a cash-only bar.

t’s not too good to be true. The American Red Cross has more Hurricane Irma money for residents of the Florida Keys. There were five teams canvassing Big Pine Key and Marathon neighborhoods this week. The organization will make another push in early December to canvass more neighborhoods and sign up households for help or, in some cases, more help.

The American Red Cross is working from a database of residents who were on the substantially damaged lists complied by FEMA, Monroe County, City of Marathon and the American Red Cross damage assessment team. Some may have already received assistance and qualify for more; others may be first-time clients.

“We are using sophisticated software to identify the people we can help. We can literally walk down the street and see — house by house — which homes are eligible and then we knock on the door,” said Eric Corliss, executive director of the Hurricane Irma Recovery Program. “But we are also following the threads — if we are approached on the street, or directed to another home.”

Stephanie Kaple, executive director of the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, said sometimes the most difficult part of the process is convincing the household to accept help.

“I hope this Red Cross money can be the piece that helps folks close the gap.

Some people say, ‘I’m not that bad. I’m only one-third damaged’ or ‘I donate to the Red Cross; I don’t accept money from them.’ And I tell them, well you paid it in, you need to get it back out now,” Kaple said.

Some families will qualify for the basic unmet needs. Others may also qualify for additional funds to address complex unmet recovery needs. It’s important to note that the qualifications are damagebased, not income-based. Corliss said.

“Some people have spent their life savings to make Hurricane Irma repairs, and they are going underwater even though they make a good salary,” said Elmira Leto, of Keys Strong.

Corliss said the American Red Cross has identified 2,100 families in the Keys who could qualify for help. But there may be more.

American Red Cross representatives will be present at an event on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Haitian Evangelical Baptist Church on Big Coppitt Key, just east of Bobalu’s Southern Café.

Where to begin? Well, when the American Red Cross knocks, open the door. If they don’t, contact your case manager — through the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMCOR), or Compass 82. Then the case manager reaches out directly to the American Red Cross to see if the household is eligible. The roundabout communication is an effort to avoid overwhelming the disaster teams and, in turn, frustrating the public.

In addition, the American Red Cross and other non-profits and faithbased organizations will be holding community events in the coming weeks. The public is encouraged to attend and make contact with that and other agencies. (See sidebar, left.)

As the nation responds to the recent devastating wildfires in California, the Red Cross Hurricane Irma Recovery program continues to work with the Monroe County Long Term Recovery group and other organizations to provide assistance to families 14 months after hurricane Irma made landfall.

“We’re not very loud,” Corliss said, “and we have that ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps mentality in the Florida Keys.’ But we need to keep telling our stories so that we can get the help.”

hey are doing so well,” said “new” mom Treecy Montaque of her twin 6-yearold sons, Isaiah and Maui.

“I am very proud of them for adjusting so easily.”

The twins, who were both diagnosed with autism, had been living with their three older siblings in foster care for six years in the Keys. Montaque, who is related to the biological mother and the father, and her mother, Verline Williams-Stinton, 67, were able to legally adopt the five children between their two homes.

“I had lost a baby,” said Montaque, whose family is originally from Marathon, “and my mother and I had taken the PRIDE classes so this was just a natural fit.” PRIDE is an acronym for Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education—they help support and educate “foster, adoptive, and kinship resource families.” The children were legally adopted in April.

The older siblings, Christopher, Malaea, and Naomi, said they were grateful for their experiences in foster care with Lori and Norm Stikes in Key West. “We are happy they kept us all together,” said Christopher, 13.

Lori Stikes said her and her husband Norm’s goal is to keep siblings together and give them the stability they need. The two are semi-retired with six adult biological children and 11 grandkids. Right now, they are fostering three sets of two siblings at their home. “It’s such a hard time for them; we know splitting them up would just make it worse,” she said.

She said it’s the calls she receives from the older kids that makes fostering worth it, “You know you are making a difference when you look at their faces at the end of the day and see a smile.”

Norm agreed, speaking of some of the younger children.

“They may not remember me, but I will never forget them,” he said.

As for the Montaque/WilliamsStinton family, they say Malaea has made the most progress. She was suffering from emotional distress and outbursts. Now, with her service dog, Obie, she’s done a complete 360. It helps that as a professional, Montaque teaches and tutors children with severe disabilities in an ESE instructional program, and her mother is a retired educator of special needs children.

Montaque shared her morning.

“I usually tell the boys to ‘get yourself together’ when we are trying to leave in the mornings. This morning, I couldn’t find my glasses and they were right on top of my head, when Isaiah told me ‘get yourself together, Mama’.”

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Wesley House Family Services is hosting a private event for adoptive families in the Keys on Saturday to celebrate the families. “Most adults who can provide a stable, loving home for a child or children can adopt,” said Lindsey Batterman, adoption supervisor at Wesley House. y the aroma of suntan lotion wafting through the air, and sight of several people sunbathing poolside at Barnacle Barney’s, it’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is a week away.

The tropical oasis of a tiki bar is tucked behind BlueGreen Vacation Rentals, MM 48 bayside, and is the perfect hideaway for tropical drinks and bite-sized appetizers.

Start out with a Key lime colada, which is a sweet treat in a glass. Bright swirls of Key lime syrup encompass a concoction of light rum and pina colada mix, blended with ice and mixed with graham cracker crumbs. It’s the ideal Keys drink.

Or have a mudslide by the pool, a decadent mix of vodka, Kahlua and Bailey’s Irish Cream — perfect for sipping in warm weather. It tastes like a milkshake, but packs a wallop, so be careful.

Dig into the list of “tiki-tizers” – appetizers. Try blackened tuna bites, tender pieces of ahi tuna, flash fried and served with a spicy dipping sauce. On the happy hour menu from 3 to 6 p.m., find specials on chicken wings, nachos and cheese, wings, mozzarella sticks and conch fritters.

Wash it all down with a beer on draft or in the bottle with local favorites like Florida Keys Brewing Co.’s Iguana Bait and Islamorada Beer Company’s Channel Marker IPA. Bud Light drafts are $2 at happy hour.

Barnacle Barney’s is a great lunch spot, with burgers and sandwiches on the menu, along with wraps, salads, soups and fried platters. Barney’s conch chowder is a Manhattan-style treat, and they’ll even share the recipe for you to take home.

For lunch, try the classic Cuban: ham, roasted marinated pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard on pressed toasted Cuban bread and whale fries. Yum. New on Friday nights, the restaurant is hosting an all-youcan-eat fish fry for $12. On the first fish fry night Nov. 2, the fish was such a hit it sold out.

His new movie “The Public” screens at Key West Film Festival

ovie goers have seen actor Emilio Estevez talk about injustice in a library before, but at 56, he hasn’t forgotten how to strike the same chord on screen. Gone are his “Brat Pack” days of “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “The Breakfast Club,” and lighter films like “Stakeout” and, lest we forget, “The Mighty Ducks.” The recent iteration of his career as a writer and director has certainly polished his resume. His new film “The Public,” which Estevez, wrote, directed (his seventh) and starred in, is coming to the Key West Film Festival, and so far audiences are raving not only for the entertainment but its message as well. The film is about a nonviolent sit-in by the homeless in the Cincinnati public library when shelters fill up during a brutal cold snap. Estevez plays the librarian who is caught between the homeless and the police outside as they barricade themselves in the building for the night. It’s a feelgood story about people discovering their humanity. It also shines a spotlight on the brutal realities of public libraries in America today.

“It’s not a critic’s ‘darling,’ but it’s rousing audiences and they love it,” said Estevez, who’s spent 12 years developing the film. The movie addresses the unknown role of librarians as community middlemen for the mentally ill and drug-addicted homeless people. “Librarians are on the front lines,” he said. “They know the needs of the community and they deal with more issues than first responders. Every day, librarians face the unfathomable cruelty of homelessness in America. Now, they are vital to helping these people and are woefully underfunded. I am hoping the film inspires people to help their local library.”

Estevez said he loves libraries, especially the anonymity — a spot he appreciates due to his place in the public spotlight since his first major acting hit “Outsiders”(1983). “I sit in there and just observe.

It really is a sacred space,” said Estevez, who touts researching his award-winning film “Bobby”(2006) about the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, in the public library. He would wear a hoodie and watch the librarians’ interactions with the people, inspiring many elements of “The Public.”

Having pursued an acting career instead of college, Estevez is remarkably academic and a self-professed bookworm. “I missed out, for better or worse; I guess I have chosen my own curriculum.” He is an avid reader of nonfiction. “I like stir-the-pot writers who are on the front lines of being truth tellers, like Noam Chomsky.”

It’s easy to describe Estevez as passionate and personable, more of a Midwestern attitude of his adopted home Cincinnati than Hollywood elite. Naturally, he filmed at the Cincinnati Public Library, as it would be implausible for L.A. to have temperatures go below freezing. He’s a road warrior who traverses the country in his car alone, going back and forth between both homes and paying close attention to politics and cultural injustice.

“I don’t take it as a slight when people call me old-fashioned,” said Estevez. Meaning: he isn’t above making a feel-good movie, but he knows there is a balance. He labeled “The Public” a dramedy. Estevez, as well as his family, are all known for their comedic attributes “You can’t beat the audience over the head with a serious issue. We have some great comedy actors in the film, like Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling and Christian Slater.”

He admitted, “I was terrified to play it at the American Library Association’s convention last June.

But they were 95 percent favorable of the film.” Now Estevez is searching for a distributor. Audiences will always be drawn to a gentler film that lies somewhere between entertainment and truth-telling, with a few laughs.

“I am hopeful this film has legs and will inspire people to help their local libraries.

So far the outreach to bring the film places across America has been overwhelming.”

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL & MOVIE The Key West Film Festival, now in its seventh year, takes place through Sunday, Nov. 18 at various locations around the Southernmost City.

Dozens of movies are shown every year, and stars ranging from Marisa Tomei to Sebastian Junger make appearances. This year, Emilio Estevez will be in town to promote his movie, “The Public.”

hen asked about Emilio Estevez’s new movie “The Public,” Marathon librarian Cristy Danford starts tumbling over her words in her excited haste.

“I saw that! I saw that movie at the American Library Association conference in June in New Orleans,” she said, referencing the movie on the opposite page, part of the Key West Film Festival. “Afterwards Estevez and author Ryan J. Down hosted a discussion about the ideas outlined in his book — ‘The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness.’”

Danford said the part of the discussion that made the biggest impact for her was the emphasis on empathy and the different types of homelessness.

“The only ones I know who are homeless, have flat out told me,” she said. “But there are plenty of people who are sleeping in their car, who are clean and showered, whom you would have no idea about their circumstances. I don’t make assumptions.”

There are plans for a new Marathon library, located on the opposite side of the highway near Stanley Switlik Elementary. For now, it’s still a sleepy little place with books, books on tape, movies and periodicals. There is a welcoming room for children, and even a little outdoor patio in the rear.

It’s also air-conditioned and patrons have access to WiFi and internet-connected computers. All of which makes it attractive to everyone — including the homeless.

Linnea Cunningham explains: The Banyan type tree native to South Florida is called the “Strangler Fig,” with the botanical name Ficus aurea. It has a flower fertilized by a special wasp and a seed which floats in the wind and settles on the canopy of an established tree, sometimes a palm tree. This small epiphyte seedling begins to send roots toward the ground to obtain water, nourishment and to establish a foundation in the earth. As the Strangler Fig grows downward the aerial roots become thicker and more trunk-like.

They can grow 12 to 20 feet to reach the ground. As time moves forward the supports twine around the host tree and may kill it. Multiple trunks intertwine to increase the stability of the plant which can spread over an entire building lot.

Banyan trees have a special place in Indian history. A 300-year-old tree offered its shade to the Buddha as he taught his students.

THE CORAL RESTORATION FOUNDATION COMES TO THE REEF RESCUE

T

he Keys are in an underwater state of emergency. The Florida Keys’ barrier reef is the third largest reef in the world, and it’s in dire need of attention and care. “There is an urgency in the situation. The Keys rely on this reef,” said Coral Restoration Foundation Communications Director Alice Grainger.

After receiving a new grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, aka NOAA, the Coral Restoration Foundation “has grown incredibly,” said Grainger. “We have the capacity to expand and completely overhaul the nursery. We are growing opportunities for the local community in Key West.”

Here’s why it’s a state of emergency: The Keys reef used to have two dominant coral species: staghorn and elkhorn. “Over the last 30 years, we’ve lost 98 percent of these species. And they are very important because they form the complex matrix that creates the habitat for a lot of marine species.”

So while we know it’s bad when any species die off, what are the real stakes?

“You get a cascading effect where other elements of the ecosystem deteriorate,” said Grainger. “Reefs support at least 25 percent of all fish species, and that’s not even including mammals, which we know also rely on reefs.” Grainger describes how everything in our oceans, from the smallest plankton to the biggest whale— to the humans who rely on the ocean for sustenance, employment and recreation—are affected by this.

“From a global perspective, we are looking at the potential loss of all shallow water coral reefs in the next 80 years.

Imagine if we lost all of our temperate forests in the whole world. … We know

it would be catastrophic.” She said the biggest threat is – you guessed it – climate change. While we have become accustomed to these “worst case scenario” climate change predictions, Grainger and her colleagues at CRF speak of the reef loss not as dystopian future, but a frightening reality. “More than 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean, and on a local level, we look at losing a really important barrier. Reefs protect shorelines from storm surges.” Economically, the disaster looms large, too.

“We rely massively on tourism,” Grainger said. “Without the reef, there is no fishing, diving, or snorkeling.”

So what can we do? Fortunately, Coral Restoration Foundation has been doing a lot already. CRF has developed a simple but effective technology to grow coral, particularly staghorn and elkhorn, that is now used widely in south Florida, and around the world — the “Coral Tree.”

“In the last 10 years, we’ve planted just over 76,000 corals back on the coral reef, and more than 20,000 were planted in this year alone,” Grainger said. They have developed nurseries up and down the Keys in which the coral matures before it is “outplanted” onto the reef. Coral can produce both sexually and asexually, and it is the corals’ asexual reproductive process that CRF utilizes. To produce more corals, they simply fragment some of the more mature corals in their nurseries and rehang them on the Coral Trees.

In turn, these fragments grow into large colonies that can be outplanted or re-fragmented in just six to nine months. They are working with more than 300 genetic strains across 10 species of coral. Some of these genotypes “have survived 30 to 40 years of poor water quality and other

stressors,” Grainger said, “So the genotypes that we are working with are likely to be hardy.” The Key West-based nursery has more than 100 trees, and the largest nursery has more than 500 trees.

They also need our help. There are things in our control that we should NOT do, like wearing oxybenzone sunscreen, which is “highly toxic to marine life,” and we should be thoughtful about our interaction with the reefs as snorkelers and divers (look, don’t touch!). We need city officials and boaters to be diligent in handling waste management—not long ago, the sea urchin population was nearly wiped out because of a pathogen found in human intestines. That’s right, we are literally killing the ocean with our crap.

We can also be proactive. “We need volunteers,” Grainger said. “We need people to join us on dive programs. We need donations. We need people to educate themselves on the issues that are facing this precious ecosystem.”

“This is the only barrier reef in the U.S. This is as precious a resource as Yellowstone Park,” Grainger said. Imagine the outrage that would occur if Yellowstone were being defecated on, poisoned, and kicked around like our reef.

hile passing Marathon Airport one can’t help but notice a little chopper, waiting patiently by the fence, looking like a yellow canary. It’s enough to get my curiosity, and I make the turn into the parking lot of the General Aviation Building to find out more.

Three pairs of friendly eyes turn to me as I walk into the waiting room.

“I’m here to talk to someone about the yellow chopper.”

“That would be me.” One of the three gets up from the corner sofa and walks toward me with his hand outstretched.

“I was just wondering whether I could take a ride. I’ve never been in a helicopter before…”

“Jake is a great pilot. He makes you feel safe.” That comment comes from Shantal Pettry, who is behind the counter. And then they all pitch in and I find myself in the midst of an affectionate, warm conversation.

David Wiegman, who is working for the airport, adds, “He is adaptable to the customer. Even if they are from a different country, Jake has a way to make them feel comfortable. And there’s nothing like seeing the Keys from the helicopter!”

The pilot, Jake Lounsbury, was an EMT in California and used to ride in the back of the helicopters, attending to patients. He soon became friends with the pilots and they encouraged him to start taking flying lessons. It took him about three years to get his airplane and helicopter license, but now he has a seat in the front of the aircraft.

And front row it is, indeed.

“Every flight, I get to see the beautiful clear blue water, dolphins, sting rays, manatees and sharks — the emerald waters all the way to the bottom,” and he gives me an adventurous smile.

the airport and are not just for pleasure, but for business such as photo sessions or surveys.

For sightseeing there are 10 different options, lasting from six minutes to an hour. Starting cost — $59 per person. Jake says the most common route, a 20-minute ride, takes passengers halfway down to the Seven Mile Bridge and cuts over to Sombrero Lighthouse.

The best time to fly is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun is directly overhead, turning the waters into mystical colors.

Jake explains that flying a helicopter is much smoother than an airplane because the blades are flexible and they absorb turbulence.

After noticing that I’m still a little hesitant, he adds that it is not rare for one spouse to “drag” the other along on the excursion. However, after a couple of minutes in the air, the anxiety has vanished, replaced by comments such as, “Look, how pretty!” *** “What’s the name of your little yellow canary chopper?”

Everyone turns to look at me.

“A name? It doesn’t have a name.”

‘Well, Jake saved a bird and I started calling it Shippy; short for a ‘shipmate.’ I served on a ship,” David offers.

“So, we could name the helicopter … Choppy. It is your good mate after all, isn’t it?” No voting needed. Everyone agreed and the chopper got its name.
