Monroe County part of statewide recount

O

n Wednesday, Nov. 7, Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin sent out a press release informing Monroe County that there will be a recount of votes. The recount isn’t just countywide but statewide, in a state that has been plagued with voting irregularities (Remember the “hanging chads” of 2000?).

The Monroe County machine recount concluded on Wed. Nov. 14, while other counties continue to plod through the process.

Seats at stake are U.S. Senate, governor, and commissioner of agriculture. President Donald Trump expressed disapproval of the recount on Twitter, saying that “Mayor Gillum conceded on Election Day … This is an embarrassment to our Country and to Democracy!” Gubernatorial candidate Gillum countered: “What’s embarrassing to democracy is not counting every vote –and you, of course. Count every vote.”

The heated exchange only scratches the surface of the recount story. A supervisor of elections in Bay County admitted to allowing voting via email, which is illegal, and there have been reports of machines overheating in Palm Beach during the recount. If recounted vote margins statewide reflect a difference of .25 percent or less, the machine recount will be followed by a hand recount.

‘I THOUGHT WE WERE FORGOTTEN’ American Red Cross still handing out Irma funds SARA MATTHIS

t’s not too good to be true. The American Red Cross has more Hurricane Irma money for residents of the Florida Keys. There were five teams canvassing Big Pine Key and Marathon neighborhoods this week. The organization will make another push in early December to canvass more neighborhoods and sign up households for help or, in some cases, more help.

The American Red Cross is working from a database of residents who were on the substantially damaged lists complied by FEMA, Monroe County, City of Marathon and the American Red Cross damage assessment team. Some may have already received assistance and qualify for more; others may be first-time clients.

“We are using sophisticated software to identify the people we can help. We can literally walk down the street and see — house by house — which homes are eligible and then we knock on the door,” said Eric Corliss, executive director of the Hurricane Irma Recovery Program. “But we are also following the threads — if we are approached on the street, or directed to another home.”

Stephanie Kaple, executive director of the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, said sometimes the most difficult part of the process is convincing the household to accept help.

“I hope this Red Cross money can be the piece that helps folks close the gap.

Some people say, ‘I’m not that bad. I’m only one-third damaged’ or ‘I donate to the Red Cross; I don’t accept money from them.’ And I tell them, well you paid it in, you need to get it back out now,” Kaple said.

Some families will qualify for the basic unmet needs. Others may also qualify for additional funds to address complex unmet recovery needs. It’s important to note that the qualifications are damagebased, not income-based. Corliss said.

“Some people have spent their life savings to make Hurricane Irma repairs, and they are going underwater even though they make a good salary,” said Elmira Leto, of Keys Strong.

Corliss said the American Red Cross has identified 2,100 families in the Keys who could qualify for help. But there may be more.

American Red Cross representatives will be present at an event on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Haitian Evangelical Baptist Church on Big Coppitt Key, just east of Bobalu’s Southern Café.

Where to begin? Well, when the American Red Cross knocks, open the door. If they don’t, contact your case manager — through the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMCOR), or Compass 82. Then the case manager reaches out directly to the American Red Cross to see if the household is eligible. The roundabout communication is an effort to avoid overwhelming the disaster teams and, in turn, frustrating the public.

In addition, the American Red Cross and other non-profits and faithbased organizations will be holding community events in the coming weeks. The public is encouraged to attend and make contact with that and other agencies. (See sidebar, left.)

As the nation responds to the recent devastating wildfires in California, the Red Cross Hurricane Irma Recovery program continues to work with the Monroe County Long Term Recovery group and other organizations to provide assistance to families 14 months after hurricane Irma made landfall.

“We’re not very loud,” Corliss said, “and we have that ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps mentality in the Florida Keys.’ But we need to keep telling our stories so that we can get the help.”

COMMISSION SAYS GOODBYE TO MAYOR AFTER FIVE TERMS

N

o one could blame Key West Mayor Craig Cates for his tearful goodbye at the Nov. 7 City Commission meeting. After five terms, Cates left the commission on a positive note and thanked the people of Key West for electing him in every mayoral election since 2009.

Mayor-elect Teri Johnston, a former city commissioner, will take Cates’ place on the dais Nov. 19. She won all 10 Key West precincts on Election Day with 60 percent of the votes against former commissioner Margaret Romero.

Cates received a round of applause at the meeting. “I’m going to say a few words, and I think I’ll get through this,” he said. “It’s been an honor to work with the city staff and it’s been amazing working with the citizens of Key West, and all the great ideas that come from this community.”

Johnston has been active in Key West for 20 years, and served on the commission from 2007 to 2015.

“I can’t wait to get started,” Johnston told the Weekly, adding she was humbled by the community support and “willingness to play an active role in solving our long-term challenges.”

She also thanked all candidates who ran for city and county seats.

“You are all winners,” she said.

The commission also approved an 80-unit housing project at 3900 South Roosevelt Blvd., at the Ocean Walk apartment complex. Fifty-six marketrate units will be built on the site, along with 24 affordable housing units. The buyer, Pasco Companies, is a California-based real estate investment firm which bought Ocean Walk last year.

SIMONTON STREET

KEY WEST HISTORY

T

he namesake of Simonton Street is John Watson Simonton. He was born in New Jersey, in 1791.

He was a businessman and merchant. Because he operated between Mobile, Alabama and Cuba, he understood Key West’s advantageous position along the shipping lines, especially after it became an American territory.

He purchased the island for $2,000 on Dec. 20, 1821. While Simonton was an early Key West resident, he was a snowbird. He would winter in Key West, but spend his summers in Washington D.C. where he was popular in political circles. There are other circles that refer to him as Colonel John Simonton, though there seems to be no corresponding military records to corroborate the ranking. There was, however, a John W. Simonton who served as a private in the War of 1812. John Simonton died while in Washington D.C. on May 15, 1854.

NICK NORMAN BAND KICKS OFF FIRST FLIGHT’S MUSIC SEASON

T

he collaboration of Nick Norman, “Caffeine” Carl Wagoner, and Joey Marchiano isn’t new. They’ve been playing together for years. “We started becoming a collaborative, and we put out a record,” Norman said. “They’ve traveled with me. We opened for Lee Rice, The Wailers, Tab Benoit, and Yonder Mountain String Band. So, we’ve been doing it for a while.”

In this iteration of “The Nick Norman Band,” Tom Conger joins on bass and the collective takes their talent to a new locale: First Flight. The restaurant, bar and venue is opening its music season, with shows scheduled throughout the winter.

Norman has become one of the most recognizable faces — and voices — on the island over the years, ever since he made his way down from South Carolina.

“I came down to see Joal (Rush) at Hog’s Breath, and got up and played a few tunes with him, and we walked over to the Lazy Gecko and Irish Kevin’s, and I played there.”

Norman was just visiting, but by the end of the night, he already had job offers. “So, I sold my pawn shop and income tax service and moved down.”

“For lack of a better word, it’s kind of a reunion show,” Norman said, “and we haven’t done a full band show in a really long time.” While Conger is new to the group, the other three band mates have a long history—which wasn’t always easy to navigate.

“When we were traveling, Joey and Carl had to Facetime with their families. Joey would be setting up drums and talking to his daughter.” Now, Norman is all about the hometown gigs, since he has a 3-year-old daughter with his wife, Key West Theater Executive Director Kelly Norman. “I don’t have to travel, and I get to spend more time with my family.”

When asked what makes Key West different from other music towns, Wagoner laughs: “I’m a Conch, so I don’t know — all I do is down here.” Maybe that’s one reason that our Keys music scene is so rich: musicians are born and bred here, and they stay.

Conger, who moved to the Keys from up north, said, “There are a couple of other aspects. … In other places, you have to drive anywhere. Also, there is a really solid community of local guys, and there is enough work for everyone, so nobody’s cutting each other’s throat.”

“We have friends that come down from all over the country a few weeks a year, and they come to see us,” Conger said. “We are exposed to some really great musicians.”

“And then you go across the street and there are more,” said Wagoner.

Key West has certainly made its mark not just as a music town, but as a songwriter’s town. The band will be performing lots of originals at First Flight. Of the music styles

in Key West, Norman said, “There’s a little bit of everything. … The songwriting thing has really blossomed because of the songwriters festival. I think one of the biggest struggles of being down here isn’t finding folks that want to hear it, but finding the time to sit down and write tunes.” While I’m sure they get the predictable Buffett and Cash and Bob Marley requests, it’s encouraging that there’s an audience here for artistry.

“Every now and then,” Conger said, “someone comes into a bar and asks to hear one of your songs.”

“We’ve been doing these songs around town for years, and people have heard them,” Wagoner said.

“I’ve seen a ‘Good Whiskey and Cheap Cocaine’ T-shirt,” Marchiano laughed. “Good Whiskey and Cheap Cocaine” is one of their best-known songs, along with the up-tempo tortured lover tune “Adeline.”

Norman sums up the gig: “Really, it’s just four local guys doing some original material for this show, and we don’t always get to do as much original material as we’d love to do.”

Music lovers can hear the Nick Norman Band at First Flight at 8 p.m. (doors at 6:30) on Sunday, Nov. 25. Check the First Flight calendar for upcoming events, including the much-anticipated “Landon’s Dysfunctional Family Christmas Reunion,” which promises to be a different type of reunion entirely.

The good news is the Nick Norman Band is on the island to stay. As their namesake said, “I can’t think of anywhere else I’ve been where you can hop on your bike and go to your gig.”

I

t’s not difficult to understand why the Key West Police Department has a good rapport with the public, since it has been under the helm of a man versed in diversity and integrity, Chief Donie Lee Jr. A fourth-generation Conch with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Florida, Lee also is Key West’s first openly gay chief of police. Lee is stepping down after 24 years on the force and a decade as chief. It’s safe to say Key West is filled with gratitude, as Lee has fostered an unprecedented trust and confidence between the community and the department.

“The integrity of our force has been second only to fighting crime,” said Lee, whose goal was to bring stability to the department as well as accountability.

He holds the 99 officers and 25 civilians to live up to core values, such as responsibility and transparency. The result? The crime index has been reduced 50 percent and Lee credits the partnership between community and the force.

“It’s bittersweet leaving. I will miss the people the most, but I leave it in good hands,” said Lee. Being an officer has been a part of his life since what he calls a “wonderful childhood” in Key West, owning his first police scanner and chasing officers around town. “I was born to be a police officer. I’m living a childhood dream.”

After college, Lee briefly contemplated going into the Secret Service, but he is glad he chose to come back home. From the many awards and pictures with presidents of the United States, his public service has been filled with memorable moments.

There were frightening times, like waiting for Irma to hit, and Lee can proudly look back at safely getting his hometown through the ordeal. Also, he is excited to see his decade-long advocacy of security cameras on Duval Street come to fruition in the near future, but not before his retirement Dec. 3. As for his future, Lee can’t stop protecting and serving.

His next chapter will be starting Florida Keys Security, a company that can provide extra security for events and individuals, maybe even a celebrity or two. But for the man retiring shy of 50, he said “I don’t think I am done yet, I still will help where I can.”

Looking back on your career as chief, what the biggest change you see in yourself? A lot more gray hair. Each of them comes with more wisdom.

What advice would you give to young cops in Key West?

Use your discretion wisely. Not everyone has to go to jail or get a ticket.

What’s the funniest thing you remember happening while chief? Interacting with the elementary kids. They say the funniest things.

You’re retired, so now what are you going to do? I have started a security business, Florida Keys Security, and will spend time growing it. Hopefully I’ll get some travel in too.

Would you ever run for KW public office? I have no immediate plans to run for political office, but if the opportunity and need presents itself in the future, I will consider.

What will you miss about being chief? What won’t you miss? I will miss the professional hard working members of the Key West Police Department. Dealing with Hurricane Irma is certainly something I won’t miss, but having said that, I would do it all over again.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Tina Turner.

What job would you be terrible at? Artist. I’m not very creative.

If invisible in Key West what would you do? I don’t know, but that was my plan after retirement.

What did you think you would grow out of but haven’t? My uniform pants.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Havana Club rum.

What job would you secretly love to have? Chief of police, but don’t tell anyone.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? Service to country or community.

Lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? George Washington. I would love to know what he thinks of his great experiment and the current state of our nation.

THE CORAL RESTORATION FOUNDATION COMES TO THE REEF RESCUE

T

he Keys are in an underwater state of emergency. The Florida Keys’ barrier reef is the third largest reef in the world, and it’s in dire need of attention and care. “There is an urgency in the situation. The Keys rely on this reef,” said Coral Restoration Foundation Communications Director Alice Grainger.

After receiving a new grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, aka NOAA, the Coral Restoration Foundation “has grown incredibly,” said Grainger. “We have the capacity to expand and completely overhaul the nursery. We are growing opportunities for the local community in Key West.”

Here’s why it’s a state of emergency: The Keys reef used to have two dominant coral species: staghorn and elkhorn. “Over the last 30 years, we’ve lost 98 percent of these species. And they are very important because they form the complex matrix that creates the habitat for a lot of marine species.”

So while we know it’s bad when any species die off, what are the real stakes?

“You get a cascading effect where other elements of the ecosystem deteriorate,” said Grainger. “Reefs support at least 25 percent of all fish species, and that’s not even including mammals, which we know also rely on reefs.” Grainger describes how everything in our oceans, from the smallest plankton to the biggest whale— to the humans who rely on the ocean for sustenance, employment and recreation—are affected by this.

“From a global perspective, we are looking at the potential loss of all shallow water coral reefs in the next 80 years.

Imagine if we lost all of our temperate forests in the whole world. … We know

it would be catastrophic.” She said the biggest threat is – you guessed it – climate change. While we have become accustomed to these “worst case scenario” climate change predictions, Grainger and her colleagues at CRF speak of the reef loss not as dystopian future, but a frightening reality. “More than 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean, and on a local level, we look at losing a really important barrier. Reefs protect shorelines from storm surges.” Economically, the disaster looms large, too.

“We rely massively on tourism,” Grainger said. “Without the reef, there is no fishing, diving, or snorkeling.”

So what can we do? Fortunately, Coral Restoration Foundation has been doing a lot already. CRF has developed a simple but effective technology to grow coral, particularly staghorn and elkhorn, that is now used widely in south Florida, and around the world — the “Coral Tree.”

“In the last 10 years, we’ve planted just over 76,000 corals back on the coral reef, and more than 20,000 were planted in this year alone,” Grainger said. They have developed nurseries up and down the Keys in which the coral matures before it is “outplanted” onto the reef. Coral can produce both sexually and asexually, and it is the corals’ asexual reproductive process that CRF utilizes. To produce more corals, they simply fragment some of the more mature corals in their nurseries and rehang them on the Coral Trees.

In turn, these fragments grow into large colonies that can be outplanted or re-fragmented in just six to nine months. They are working with more than 300 genetic strains across 10 species of coral. Some of these genotypes “have survived 30 to 40 years of poor water quality and other

stressors,” Grainger said, “So the genotypes that we are working with are likely to be hardy.” The Key West-based nursery has more than 100 trees, and the largest nursery has more than 500 trees.

They also need our help. There are things in our control that we should NOT do, like wearing oxybenzone sunscreen, which is “highly toxic to marine life,” and we should be thoughtful about our interaction with the reefs as snorkelers and divers (look, don’t touch!). We need city officials and boaters to be diligent in handling waste management—not long ago, the sea urchin population was nearly wiped out because of a pathogen found in human intestines. That’s right, we are literally killing the ocean with our crap.

We can also be proactive. “We need volunteers,” Grainger said. “We need people to join us on dive programs. We need donations. We need people to educate themselves on the issues that are facing this precious ecosystem.”

“This is the only barrier reef in the U.S. This is as precious a resource as Yellowstone Park,” Grainger said. Imagine the outrage that would occur if Yellowstone were being defecated on, poisoned, and kicked around like our reef.

f you think Florida is as pure as its sunshine, bless your heart. But, no, this is the state known for outrageous scandals and America’s sweetheart sport, baseball, is not exempt. Florida’s favorite filmmaker, Billy Corben, (“Cocaine Cowboys” and “Square Grouper: The Godfathers of Ganja” by Rakontur Productions) is back again with “Screwball,” a true-crime drama about MLB’s 2013 doping scandals. But don’t expect this to be an episode of Dateline; Corben tells the tale with all the absurdity of “only in Florida could this ever happen” smart-ass comedy. Hands down, the movie is entertaining, and the best part is that it’s actually true.

“It’s a Florida F#@kery story,” said Corben. “We knew the movie was meant to happen when these amazing characters came to us in person; they are so real, rich and complicated.” Corben is referring to Miami area doctor Tony Bosch, who embedded his performance-enhancing drugs in the big league. He helped dope players like Manny Ramirez and worked his way up the chain to New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez. Rodriquez actually approached Corben back in 2013 after being busted. “He lied to us for about an hour trying to do damage control. He was

Fischer worked for Bosch but sold him out when he thought Bosch was cheating him. Fischer, as revenge, leaked doping documents — not without looking for ‘compensation’ from MLB first — and eventually ended up in jail.

“The MLB players were just collateral damage of this scheme between a cokeaddicted doctor (Bosch) and a self-professed professional tanner (Fischer) and some lowlevel mobsters. It’s really a heist movie,” said Corben. “The audience just goes along for the ride.”

Bosch’s history is woven with colorful idiocy, from his degree in medicine from Belize to using his immigrant father’s prescription pad. In conjunction with the MLB commissioners acting like blind mice about the whole thing, it’s a compelling and hilarious documentary. Corben went so far as to film at the actual Florida locations where events took place, calling it “a monstrous undertaking.”

The result is a movie that has great fun poking at Florida’s most entertaining criminals to an audience’s delight. Key West will host its Florida debut Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at The San Carlos Institute as a part of the Key West Film Festival. There will be a Q & A with Corben afterward.

unday, Nov. 11 marked the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I. It was a perfect reminder of how crucial our armed forces are. Key West has long been a military town, and we have a large and visible population of veterans from all military branches, as well as active duty men and women stationed here. On Nov, 10, a parade down Duval Street featured marching soldiers, trucks and floats decked out in American flag regalia, and people of all ages — tourists and locals alike — flanked the street to show their support. odolfo and Theresa Tinoco recently took over Bad Boy Burrito and the results are sooo good. The restaurant on Simonton Street is now open on Sundays, and 20 percent of the Sunday profits go to local nonprofits through the end of the year.

“This was a good way to give back to the community who we know will continue to support us,” said Theresa.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Animal Farm is up this Sunday to benefit, with Florida Keys Cancer Foundation, Reef Relief, Womankind and more on deck.

“We are especially excited that Florida Keys SPCA will be bringing adoptable animals from noon to 2 p.m. on their day, Dec. 2.”

Rodolfo is no stranger to Key West kitchens and moved to Key West 13 years ago. Theresa moved to the Keys from Wisconsin 8 years ago to beat the cold winters. “I showed up the first day of Fantasy Fest week and had no plans of leaving,” she said. In addition to the new business, the two have a 1- and 4-year-old at home and 13-year-old twins.

The newest addition to the business will be online ordering, coming in the next week. “We are a very busy little place,” said Theresa. “Sometimes it

takes two to three tries to get through to us on the two phone lines and this will streamline the process.”

She hopes customers will like the ease of online ordering and when the lines get long, they can build their burritos online while enjoying the patio space outside the restaurant.

Her personal favorite is a “build your own burrito” with all the fixings of a chicken taco (purple cabbage, white sharp cheddar, radishes, cilantro, and verde sauce). Other favorites include “The Ernesto” and the “Naked Peter” – a vegan dish with a lot of spice that is very popular with locals. And especially delicious is the fresh local lobster burritos, a special until further notice. “As long as people are still loving them, we will keep making them,” she said.

The family-run business was passed to them from originators Chris Otten and Erin Kelly, who still own and operate the Islamorada Bad Boy Burrito and wanted to focus their time in the Upper Keys. Rodolfo has worked there for four years managing the kitchen, so it was an easy transition.

Today, his mother makes the tortillas, guacamole, and pico de gallo from scratch. “It’s a quality thing, and much better than store bought,” said Theresa.

ey West welcomed the 38th Annual World Championship Super Boat Races, billed as the “Indianapolis 500” of boat races, on Nov. 4-11. Our waters were filled with impressive vessels from the world over. The six-mile course on the Gulf side of the island was churned by speed boats reaching up to 180 mph.

The Super Boat class places no restrictions on engine horsepower, so viewers who dropped anchor for viewing caught adrenaline-pumping races of some of the most powerful boats in the world. Folks without boats for viewing camped out at places like Fort Zachary Taylor and Sunset Pier at Ocean Key. The Historic Key West Seaport teemed with activities, food and special events for power boat visitors and locals alike.

n any given day, most tables are full at the Key West Library. It’s not a secret that it’s a clean, air-conditioned safe haven for the island’s homeless and displaced, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Stand in the main reading room, and there is a sense of serenity and calmness. Folks of all types are quietly flipping through books, perusing the internet, watching movies, and soon the lines blur between those who have chosen to be there and the ones who need a place to go.

Emilio Estevez’s new movie called the “The Public” calls attention to public libraries across the country that serve as daily shelters for the mentally ill and the derelict.

Key West is no exception, but there is a sense of awareness and balance the librarians have achieved.

“The library is an oasis for them on our island,” said Anne Layton Rice, library administrator for almost 21 years. “It is not a public building, but a limited public forum, and everyone needs to use it in the manner it was intended.

But the individuals do, and they respect the space because, for the most part, they don’t want to lose it. I have banned certain people before, but they are respectful, so they can keep coming.” Rice, who has a master’s degree in library science, knows it’s not all about reading. Libraries are a community center, and a librarian’s job is about handling the people — not just the books.

“When we open the door in the morning, many people waiting know us by name. There is a familiarity between all of us. And now SHAL — Southernmost Homeless Assistance League — works there, helping individuals apply for benefits on the computers, and the Sheriff’s Office is incredibly helpful reminding people to behave.” Since the addition of an officer, Rice has seen the incidents with the homeless go down to maybe once a week. Officers have been proactive at keeping both inside and outside free of conflict. Even details like keeping paper towels out of the bathroom removes the likelihood of people using the restroom to clean themselves. It may be grim, but it’s a reality.

“We treat everyone equally here,” said Librarian Robin Henderson, who has already seen “The Public” at the American Library Association’s convention last June and loved it. “It’s surprising that still people don’t understand why so many homeless people depend on libraries. And I would say thank you to Emilio for how he is talking about it.” Henderson plans on watching “The Public” again because, ironically, her fellow librarians talked too much during the screening.

Henderson stresses that to be a librarian, “You have to love people; 99 percent of the job is working with people and, regardless of what level they are at in life, treating everyone the same.”

M

ovie goers have seen actor Emilio Estevez talk about injustice in a library before, but at 56, he hasn’t forgotten how to strike the same chord on screen. Gone are his “Brat Pack” days of “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “The Breakfast Club,” and lighter films like “Stakeout” and, lest we forget, “The Mighty Ducks.” The recent iteration of his career as a writer and director has certainly polished his resume. His new film “The Public,” which Estevez, wrote, directed (his seventh) and starred in, is coming to the Key West Film Festival, and so far audiences are raving not only for the entertainment but its message as well. The film is about a nonviolent sit-in by the homeless in the Cincinnati public library when shelters fill up during a brutal cold snap. Estevez plays the librarian who is caught between the homeless and the police outside as they barricade themselves in the building for the night. It’s a feel-

good story about people discovering their humanity. It also shines a spotlight on the brutal realities of public libraries in America today.

“It’s not a critic’s ‘darling’, but it’s rousing audiences and they love it,” said Estevez, who’s spent 12 years developing the film. The movie addresses the unknown role of librarians as community middlemen for the mentally ill and drug-addicted homeless people.

“Librarians are on the front lines,” he said. “They know the needs of the community and they deal with more issues than first responders. Every day, librarians face the unfathomable cruelty of homelessness in America. Now, they are vital to helping these people and are woefully underfunded. I am hoping the film inspires people to help their local library.”

Driving from his home in Cincinnati, where his mother was born and where the film was made, to his other home in Los Angeles, Estevez was racing the clock to make it back to California to vote. His sense of public activism has been one of the many family traits, aside from acting, that he got from his father, actor Martin Sheen.

“Dad’s been arrested 68 times for nonviolent protests; he’s stood up for so many injustices. So now I always ask the question of myself, what can I do? ‘More’ is always my answer. I can always do more.” Does Sheen like the movie? Of course he does.

“I am hopeful this film has legs and will inspire people to help their local libraries. So far the outreach to bring the film places across America has been overwhelming.”

“I love libraries, I get to be anonymous in there,” said Estevez, who has been in the public spotlight since his first major acting hit “Outsiders”(1983).

“I sit in there and just observe. It really is a sacred space,” said Estevez, who touts researching his award-winning

film “Bobby”(2006) about the assassination of Bobby Kennedy, in the public library. He would wear a hoodie and watch the librarians’ interactions with the people, inspiring many elements of “The Public”.

Having pursued an acting career instead of college, Estevez is remarkably academic and a self-professed bookworm. “I missed out, for better or worse. I guess I have chosen my own curriculum.” He is an avid reader of nonfiction. “I like stir-the-pot writers who are on the front lines of being truth tellers, like Noam Chomsky.”

It’s easy to describe Estevez as passionate and personable, more of a Midwestern attitude of his adopted home Cincinnati than Hollywood elite.

Naturally, he filmed at the Cincinnati Public Library, as it would be implausible for L.A. to have temperatures go below freezing. He’s a road warrior who traverses the country in his car alone, going back and forth between both homes and paying close attention to politics and cultural injustice.

“I don’t take it as a slight when people call me old-fashioned,” said Estevez. Meaning: he isn’t above making a feel-good movie, but he knows there is a balance. He labeled “The Public” a dramedy. Estevez, as well as his family, are all known for their comedic attributes “You can’t beat the audience over the head with a serious issue. We have some great comedy actors in the film, like Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling and Christian Slater.”

He admitted, “I was terrified to play it at the American Library Association’s convention last June. But they were 95 percent favorable of the film.” Now back in L.A., Estevez is searching for a distributor. Audiences will always be drawn to a gentler film that lies somewhere between entertainment and truth-telling, with a few laughs. Playing only for third time, after the Toronto Film Festival and the ALA convention, “The Public” will be shown during the Key West Film festival Nov. 15 (today), at 7:30 p.m. at The San Carlos Institute.

‘IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY, BUT IT’S WORTH IT’ November is Adoption Month

“T

hey are doing so well,” said “new” mom Treecy Montaque of her twin 6-yearold sons, Isaiah and Maui.

“I am very proud of them for adjusting so easily.”

The twins, who were both diagnosed with autism, had been living with their three older siblings in foster care for six years in the Keys. Montaque, who is related to the biological mother and the father, and her mother, Verline Williams-Stinton, 67, were able to legally adopt the five children between their two homes.

“I had lost a baby,” said Montaque, whose family is originally from Marathon, “and my mother and I had taken the PRIDE classes so this was just a natural fit.” PRIDE is an acronym for Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education—they help support and educate “foster, adoptive, and kinship resource families.” The children were legally adopted in April.

The older siblings, Christopher, Malaea, and Naomi, said they were grateful for their experiences in foster care with Lori and Norm Stikes in Key West. “We are happy they kept us all together,” said Christopher, 13.

Lori Stikes said her and her husband Norm’s goal is to keep siblings together and give them the stability they need. The two are semi-retired with six adult biological children and 11 grandkids. Right now, they are fostering three sets of two siblings at their home. “It’s such a hard time for them; we know splitting them up would just make it worse,” she said.

She said it’s the calls she receives from the older kids that makes fostering worth it, “You know you are making a difference when you look at their faces at the end of the day and see a smile.”

Norm agreed, speaking of some of the younger children. “They may not remember me, but I will never forget them,” he said.

As for the Montaque/Williams-Stinton family, they say Malaea has made the most progress. She was suffering

from emotional distress and outbursts.

Now, with her service dog, Obie, she’s done a complete 360. It helps that as a professional, Montaque teaches and tutors children with severe disabilities in an ESE instructional program, and her mother is a retired educator of special needs children.

Montaque shared her morning. “I usually tell the boys to ‘get yourself together’ when we are trying to leave in the mornings. This morning, I couldn’t find my glasses and they were right on top of my head, when Isaiah told me ‘get yourself together, Mama’.”

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Wesley House Family Services is hosting a private event for adoptive families in the Keys on Saturday to celebrate the families.

“Most adults who can provide a stable, loving home for a child or children can adopt,” said Lindsey Batterman, adoption supervisor at Wesley House. She can be reached at 305-809-5000 for more information.
