inner of Islamorada’s seat 2 election, Cheryl Meads spent her day a little differently than other candidates.

Following her victory, Meads said she’s overjoyed and delighted. She says she can’t wait for the next council meeting and the next two years.

Meads says she’d like to continue work based on what Islamorada’s residents are asking council to do.

“I’m all about our strategic plan,” she said. “We have this living document where we meet with the people in the village and talk about what our concerns are and what we want the future of our community to be, and we make a project plan on how to get there.”

Meads said there will be meetings in the future to go over the current strategic plan and anything that needs to be added. Meads said affordable housing, traffic, parking, the environment and more are in the strategic plan.

FORMER MILITARY INTELLIGENCE CONTRACTOR WINS SEAT 4

W

ith friends and family by his side, Ken Davis peered at the results as they came in for Islamorada Village Council’s seat 4 inside City Hall Café. When it was all said and done, Davis came out the victor and the celebration began.

Unofficial results showed Davis, an Islamorada resident and former military intelligence contractor, securing 2,234 votes, or 69 percent, of the total vote. Eric Carlson, Islander Resort manager, garnered 985 votes, or 31 percent.

With his victory, Davis said he will keep a promise that he made from the outset.

“Any decision I make, any vote I go with is what I believe is best for the village,” Davis said. “I had one former councilman say to me that one of the worst decisions was letting the crowd sway his vote.”

Davis says anyone in the village who thinks that he’s not doing the job can call him at 305-796-7494.

“Let’s talk about it,” he said.

For Carlson, the election process was a good learning experience on how the village works and what needs to be done. Despite the loss, Carlson said his campaign alone registered 300 new voters.

“We got people involved who normally wouldn’t be,” he said. “I want to see people vote more than anything else. I would love for them to vote for me, but I want to see them vote more than anything else.”

Davis said his victory Tuesday evening was humbling. He said his campaign received support from everyone.

“People kept their word and came out and did things that helped,” he said. “Everybody in the community was behind us.”

What happened while you were away? A lot of folks moved away.

Family: Sister in North Carolina who was a school teacher in Key Largo for 13 years.

She retired from the school system in North Carolina.

I came here on a visit on February of 1971. I had a new daughter and a new wife and came here and ran out of money.

Where do you spend your time in the Keys, or where can you be spotted around town? Behind a cement truck.

Service: Joined Marines November 10, 1965. Served in Vietnam in 196667. Had two birthdays in Vietnam, 22 and 23.

Service branch: Marines.

What happened while you were away? The country changed. There were major changes during the years of 1967 and 1968. That’s when the riots started and rebellions.

My friend recently asked me the same question. He and I had the same answer: The smell.

Do you keep in contact with anyone you served with? Yes, only for the last few years. It was 20-something years before I could contact anybody.

Hometown: Long Beach, N.Y. Family: Wife and three sons, five grandchildren.

When did you move into the Keys? Back in 1990 when I built my house.

Doing my job, anxious to get home and counting the days. You marked off the days and you knew how many days you had left.

U

pper Matecumbe Key’s original community was known simply as Matecumbe. Upper Matecumbe was also the location of Islamorada’s original town site.

Where Matecumbe is one of South Florida’s oldest place names, dating back to 1573, Islamorada is a fairly modern identifier. Though the name has been intertwined with a particularly colorful origin story, Henry Flagler had more to do with the Islamorada name than anything colored purple.

William J. Krome, one of Flagler’s engineers, would be responsible for the name after 15 acres were purchased from the Russell family for $735. Twenty-two lots were platted and the town site of Islamorada declared circa 1906.

For those clinging to the Purple Isles story, the Spanish word for purple is morado while morada means home or dwelling. Anything but historic, in fact, the colorfully romantic story of the Purple Isles seems to date back all the way to the 1970s.

Night at the Museum set for Nov. 10 A Night at the Museum: Bootlegger Bash is set for Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 6 p.m., at Keys History & Discovery Center, located at the Islander Resort, MM 82. For one night only, guests will find a “secret speakeasy” behind the museum and the clandestine evening will feature live jazz, silent auction, and gaming. Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, casino tables, a surf-and-turf dinner and dessert. Seats are $150 per person.

The event supports the mission of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation and is presented by Islamorada Distilling and Islamorada Beer Company.

Keys guitarist to perform concert in Miami Nov. 10 Acoustic guitarist David Feder will perform at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Following a string of sold out shows in Ashville, N.C., Gainesville and Sebring, Fla, Feder will make a tour stop in Miami this week before returning home to Islamorada.

Feder’s blend of Flamenco-infused folk music is influenced by over three decades of island living. “He has a magic way of making you feel like an old friend,” said National Public Radio’s Michael Stock, “with songs that are original and intimate.”

Ceremony Sunday to honor vets The Monroe County Veterans Department is hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday from 11 a.m. to noon to honor all who have served and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end to World War I. tate Rep. Holly Raschein will return to Tallahassee as a senior legislator. First elected in 2012, the Republican sought and won her fourth and final term.

“I’m absolutely full of gratitude for the voters in District 120. It was a wonderful victory and I’m grateful for my entire team,” Raschein said. “It was a challenging campaign. At the end of the day, I’m pleased with having run a positive campaign with great messaging. I’m very pleased with the outcome.”

Raschein defeated challenger Steve Friedman, a political newcomer and fishing guide of the Upper Keys, by 6 points district-wide, and by 13 points in Monroe County.

Although the election is over, there’s no time for rest. The state legislature is expected to announce new committee chairs in Tallahassee. In 2018, Raschein served on six committees and subcommittees, most notably as chair of the Natural Resources and Public Lands Subcommittee, and on the Appropriations Committee. The next session begins on Nov. 20 when new legislators are sworn in. Republicans held the majority in both the state House (all 120 representatives were up for re-lection this year) and state Senate (22 of the 40 seats were up for reelection).

Although he did not win, Friedman called the election a victory of sorts. “I congratulated Holly on a well-run race,” he said in a video posted to his Facebook page. “Although we did not come out on top, we won. … There’s going to be a whole lot of fishing guides going up to Tallahassee a lot more now because our message got through. That’s why it’s a win for all of us.”

In 2012, Raschein defeated Ian Whitney by 5 points, in 2014 she was unopposed, and in 2016 she bested Dan Horton by 15 points. This is her final term.

In the most expensive congressional race — an estimated $18 million spent — U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R) lost to Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D) in District 26, which encompasses the Keys. Although Curbelo carried Monroe County with 53.9 percent of the vote, Mucarsel-Powell prevailed on the mainland, earning a district-wide percentage of 51 percent.

According to the Miami Herald, Mucarsel-Powell told her supporters during her victory speech that she would fight to protect and expand Obamacare, while also pushing for more humane immigration polices and climate change solutions.

She pledged to hold the Trump administration “accountable.”

The shop known as Eco Eats has been operating at MM 99.6 oceanside for the past 10 years. Owners Matt and Lisa Boatman have owned the shop since June 1, 2012.

Eco Eats strives to serve natural food as opposed to processed food, and its owners believe that you are what you eat. Lisa said the restaurant has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Food made fresh is mainly ordered for takeout, according to Lisa.

“We have everything from tofu to gyros,” Lisa said.

“We’ve got it all for vegan, vegetarian and meat lovers.”

Patrons entering Eco Eats will see Matt and Lisa busy at work taking orders and preparing food of a wide variety. On the menu, individuals have the option to order all sorts of salads such as the Waldorf chicken salad. All salads include romaine, onion, carrots, tomatoes, cucumber and alfalfa and come with dressing of either balsamic vinaigrette, sweet Asian ginger, spicy Thai Peanut, Thousand Island, Caesar, chipotle ranch, golden Italian or ranch.

As for sandwiches, wraps and pitas, Eco Eats offers quite a selection that’ll make you come back for more. What is something most people do not know about you? Unlike my older sister who almost burned the house down a few times before going to college, I am a good cook. I started taking classes at a cooking academy at age 8.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Hands down Mrs. Dionne! She is the most personable and caring teacher. I hope to one day be as influential to someone as she was to me.

What does a “good education” mean to you? To me, a good education is more than just a letter grade. It’s fully understanding and being able to apply what you are learning.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? Personally, I think the most ridiculous rules at school have to do with dress code.

Why is it prohibited for girls to show their shoulders? Instead of teaching males not to sexualize, we are teaching the girls that their outfits imply specific things about them. On the other hand, I love that Coral Shores requires athletes to volunteer in place of the monetary support we receive from community organizations.

What is something you know now that you did not know when you were in middle school? The importance of being a friend … not just to your best friends, but to everyone.

You never know what other people are

going through, and how much your interactions with them can really affect their day.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you?

So far, I am a part of Interact S.E.A., and Special Olympics clubs, As well as a member of the Canette Dance Team and the varsity soccer team. These are important to me because I am able to be involved in activities I enjoy with like-minded people and give back to our community.

What are your plans after high school? As of now, I don’t know what I want to do as my occupation but after high school I plan on going to a university, study abroad and earn a degree in my field of choice.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I aspire to be someone known for always being an accepting and considerate person.

Everyone should be comfortable with themselves and who they are, and I hope to embody this by embracing my passions for dance and art.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I love to spend it with my friends and family.

We enjoy lots of laughs while cooking, watching sunsets, stargazing, and having good old-fashioned fun, like playing in the rain.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

The Keys was an amazing place to grow up, but it’s taught me that I am made for the city. I like the constant action, the endless people watching and being able to sit down at a restaurant past 10 p.m.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10year reunion? Graduate with at least a bachelor’s degree. Have a steady job.

veryone has different qualms about the Florida Keys community in which they live.

Maybe it’s a lack of affordable housing, homelessness or heavy traffic on the Overseas Highway — at least those were the top three on a list of concerns for Middle Keys residents last time Monroe County did a community health assessment.

Now is the time for residents to get involved and let county officials know what tops their own personal lists of health concerns.

“This is not just another Health Department survey,” said Alison Kerr, public information officer. “This is countywide and we need everyone to be involved so we can take action and identify community health priorities and strengthen programs.”

Kerr said since she released the survey last week, about 130 people have responded.

“The more the merrier. We want all the representation we can get,” she said.

People who live, work and spend time in the Keys can fill it out online, and it takes roughly five to 10 minutes. Face-toface interviews will be conducted as well, Kerr said.

The anonymous survey, which is available through the end of the month, is one of several steps in the information-gathering process. The first part, titled Public Health Essential Services, happened Oct. 31 with a meeting of more than 30 medical professionals in Key West. Their part involved a 100-question survey relating to what the county is doing to address public health concerns.

“We’re ranked pretty high in cirrhosis and drowning and motor vehicle accidents among those who are drinking alcohol,” Kerr said.

That’s been the case for a few years. Kerr said last year 23 percent of residents countywide engage in binge drinking, the highest in the state of all 67 counties. Monroe County also has the highest alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis death rate in the state, she said.

On Nov. 1, a public meeting was held with about 30 people in attendance, and it allowed people to share some of the issues, strengths, weaknesses and threats facing Monroe.

“All of that data in the four-hour meeting and the Oct. 31 meeting will go into the countywide assessment, and we’re still crunching the data,” Kerr said.

HALLIBURTON, TRANSOCEAN SETTLEMENT MONEY AVAILABLE FROM DEEPWATER HORIZON KATIE ATKINS

ettlement money is still being paid out eight years after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded off the Gulf Coast, killing 11 of 126 workers on board and resulting in an 87-day oil spill.

The damage done by 134 million gallons spewing into the Gulf of Mexico resulted in two different settlements, making for the largest total environmental damage settlement in history: $20.8 billion approved by a federal district judge in 2016. It ended all civil and criminal penalty claims against the owners and operators of the Deepwater Horizon rig – BP, Anadarko, TransOcean and Halliburton. It also included economic damage claims submitted by the five Gulf states and their local governments.

Those who were part of the BP settlement, which has now been paid out, can start the process with TransOcean and Halliburton, said Marathon-based attorney Rich Malafy. He specializes in real estaterelated litigation.

Monroe County had a “presumption of causation,” meaning damages and losses were presumed to be caused by the oil spill.

And the second part: the Halliburton and TransOcean settlement set aside more than $1.2 billion, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Of that, $902 million will be distributed to certain plaintiffs as punitive damages and $337 million will be distributed to existing Deepwater Horizon economic loss claimants.

To be a part of the TransOcean and Halliburton settlement, you would have to have lived in Monroe County or one of the other affected counties and show a loss over a certain period of time, Malafy said.

“A lot of people got discouraged about the BP settlement because you had to come up with records going years back,” Malafy said. “As long as you did the BP settlement, you’ve already done the heavy lifting and we just have to push the ball over the goal line.”

Aside from the deaths of hundreds of thousands of animals and extensive damage to beaches and wetlands, coastal businesses experienced economic losses and real estate deals fell through in the Keys. The Keys were threatened by the oil spill, and even though none made it here, fear led many tourists to change their vacation plans.

The oil left Gulf Coast states reeling from a devastated ecosystem, the deaths of as many as 105,400 sea birds, 7,600 adult and 160,000 juvenile sea turtles, and up to a 51-percent decrease in dolphins in Louisiana’s Barataria Bay, according to NOAA. When Congress passed the RESTORE Act in 2012, it dedicated 80 percent of all administrative and civil penalties from the responsible parties to ecological and economic recovery efforts in the Gulf.
