Coldiron, a three-year veteran of the Marathon City Council, garnered 53 percent of the vote. Ryan, a political newcomer with a home on Big Pine Key, won 46 percent. Coldiron carried all but nine of the precincts — including the two on Big Pine Key — while Ryan’s support ended at Big Coppitt.

“I could not have done this without all of my supporters,” Coldiron said, adding that her first order of business is two-pronged.

“First, I want to reach out to the individuals and form a committee in District 2 to bring some cohesiveness.

Then I plan to meet regularly with the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce so I have the pulse of the business district, and what we can do to improve the look of District 2.”

On Nov. 7, Ryan re-affirmed his intention to stay involved.

“They woke a sleeping giant,” Ryan said. “You’ll be seeing me again.”

Coldiron will fill the seat vacated by George Neugent who termed out after 20 years on the Monroe County Commission. Neugent ran for a Marathon City Council seat but was unsuccessful.

urricane Irma changed the landscape of Monroe County’s District 2 — in physical ways and political themes.

Many of the district’s residents in unincorporated Monroe County, hardest hit by the storm, felt disenfranchised by what was perceived as the county’s inaction. It was the overriding theme in the contest between Marathon’s Michelle Coldiron (R) and Tommy Ryan (D).

Monroe County Commissioner David Rice, the incumbent, was reelected for a fourth term to his District 4 seat. He defeated political newcomer Vicki Tashjian. On Nov. 7, the day after the election, Rice was busy picking up campaign signs before he heads out of town on vacation.

Rice ended election night with 20,444 votes to Tashjian’s 13,391 — or 60 percent to 40 percent.

“I appreciate the support of the community and promise to keep on doing the same kind of work I’ve been doing in the past,” Rice said. He said his main objectives haven’t changed: “Affordable housing and improvements to the traffic situation.”

Tashjian congratulated Rice on his win. “And I enjoyed the whole campaign process,” she said, adding that she doesn’t know if she will run again.

“Never say never. For now, I’m going to put my energies back into running my business.”

olitical newcomer Luis Gonzalez ran away with the top spot in the Marathon City Council race.

“Without the support of the community and the team, it definitely would not have been possible,” said Gonzalez. “I’m humbled and thrilled by the results considering that I was running against what I call two incumbents — Mark, the incumbent, and George, a 20-year veteran (of the county commission).”

But it was a nail-biter to determine the second-place finisher. Ultimately, incumbent Mark Senmartin was elected to serve a third term.

The final tally: Gonzalez, 1,942 votes; Senmartin: 1,605 votes; Neugent, 1,561 votes; and John Kissick, 971 votes. Neugent was slightly ahead of Senmartin until the final precinct was counted, giving Senmartin the 44-vote lead.

“I had a handle on the early voting and the absentee voting, but what caught me was the people that went to the polls and voted,” said Neugent. “But politics is a zero sum game; you can win by one vote or lose by one vote. And there were a lot of close elections this year at the local and state level.”

Senmartin plans to jump right back into governing without missing a beat.

“I’ve already done some of the preliminary research on a splash park and, obviously, got sidetracked by the election,” he said. “I want to put together a panel for recommendations. When we know what we want, we can figure out how to get it. I’m not married to any location; the city manager’s input is that Rotary Park might be the best spot, but it depends on what we want.”

He also said he plans to work on the town’s beautification with Gonzalez who has said it’s one of his top priorities too. Gonzalez wants to open all of Sombrero Beach and make it completely operational. Senmartin spoke of landscaping initiatives, but also standards for new development in Marathon. “The whole west end of Marathon is ready to blow up and … we need to have a say in what things look like when they are built.”

Gonzalez and Neugent amassed the largest war chest, with totals of $28,000 and $26,000 respectively.

Senmartin raised $14,900 and Kissick raised almost $6,000 according to the last reports filed.

A substantial number of Marathon voters “under-voted” — meaning they only voted for one candidate rather than two. According to the unofficial reports, there were 1,769 single-vote casters. That is a substantial increase over the 2015 election with 433 under votes.

tate Rep. Holly Raschein will return to Tallahassee as a senior legislator. First elected in 2012, the Republican sought and won her fourth and final term.

“I’m absolutely full of gratitude for the voters in District 120. It was a wonderful victory and I’m grateful for my entire team,” Raschein said. “It was a challenging campaign. At the end of the day, I’m pleased with having run a positive campaign with great messaging. I’m very pleased with the outcome.”

Raschein defeated challenger Steve Friedman, a political newcomer and fishing guide of the Upper Keys, by 6 points district-wide, and by 13 points in Monroe County.

Although the election is over, there’s no time for rest. The state legislature is expected to announce new committee chairs in Tallahassee. In 2018, Raschein served on six committees and subcommittees, most notably as chair of the Natural Resources and Public Lands Subcommittee, and on the Appropriations Committee. The next session begins on Nov. 20 when new legislators are sworn in. Republicans held the majority in both the state House (all 120 representatives were up for re-lection this year) and state Senate (22 of the 40 seats were up for reelection).

Although he did not win, Friedman called the election a victory of sorts. “I congratulated Holly on a well-run race,” he said in a video posted to his Facebook page. “Although we did not come out on top, we won. … There’s going to be a whole lot of fishing guides going up to Tallahassee a lot more now because our message got through. That’s why it’s a win for all of us.”

In 2012, Raschein defeated Ian Whitney by 5 points, in 2014 she was unopposed, and in 2016 she bested Dan Horton by 15 points. This is her final term.

In the most expensive congressional race — an estimated $18 million spent — U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R) lost to Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D) in District 26, which encompasses the Keys. Although Curbelo carried Monroe County with 53.9 percent of the vote, Mucarsel-Powell prevailed on the mainland, earning a district-wide percentage of 51 percent.

According to the Miami Herald, Mucarsel-Powell told her supporters during her victory speech that she would fight to protect and expand Obamacare, while also pushing for more humane immigration polices and climate change solutions.

She pledged to hold the Trump administration “accountable.”

“I’m all about our strategic plan,” she said. “We have this living document where we meet with the people in the village and talk about what our concerns are and what we want the future of our community to be, and we make a project plan on how to get there.”

Meads said there will be meetings in the future to go over the current strategic plan and anything that needs to be added. Meads said affordable housing, traffic, parking, the environment and more are in the strategic plan.

FORMER MILITARY INTELLIGENCE CONTRACTOR WINS SEAT 4

W

ith friends and family by his side, Ken Davis peered at the results as they came in for Islamorada Village Council’s seat 4 inside City Hall Café. When it was all said and done, Davis came out the victor and the celebration began.

Unofficial results showed Davis, an Islamorada resident and former military intelligence contractor, securing 2,234 votes, or 69 percent, of the total vote. Eric Carlson, Islander Resort manager, garnered 985 votes, or 31 percent.

With his victory, Davis said he will keep a promise that he made from the outset.

“Any decision I make, any vote I go with is what I believe is best for the village,” Davis said. “I had one former councilman say to me that one of the worst decisions was letting the crowd sway his vote.”

Davis says anyone in the village who thinks that he’s not doing the job can call him at 305-796-7494.

“Let’s talk about it,” he said.

For Carlson, the election process was a good learning experience on how the village works and what needs to be done. Despite the loss, Carlson said his campaign alone registered 300 new voters.

“We got people involved who normally wouldn’t be,” he said. “I want to see people vote more than anything else. I would love for them to vote for me, but I want to see them vote more than anything else.”

Davis said his victory Tuesday evening was humbling. He said his campaign received support from everyone.

“People kept their word and came out and did things that helped,” he said. “Everybody in the community was behind us.”

t’s here. The 21st annual Taste of the Islands will take over Marathon Community Park on Sunday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“This is our 21st annual event,” said Christy Johnson of the Business and Professional Women Club, Marathon chapter. “And all the proceeds benefit the BPW scholarships for graduating seniors as well as adult women.”

Admission is $5 per person, except for children under 12 (there’s a special kid zone for them, so bring them along) and veterans with ID (it is on Veterans Day, after all). Attendees are encouraged to check out the quality items in the silent auction and purchase a chance at the Cooler of Cheer raffle. There will be a couple dozen vendors and agencies with booths, and the American Legion Riders promised to bring a handful of fancy bikes to display.

Live entertainment will play continuously, including the sounds of the crowd favorite Stone Crabs.

This year, festival-goers will pay the restaurants directly (no tickets) for the tastes, ranging in cost between $2 and $6 each. There will be judges roaming the contest and category winners will be announced. Beer, craft beer, wine, water and soda will also be for sale.

The crowning moment of the evening will be the big reveal of the 2018 Big Kahuna. Right now there are two teams vying for the top spot which will be determined by who raises the most money for BPW. On the one side, there are the Overseas Boys: Andy, Jordan, Nick and Cheddar; on the other side are Marathon High School stars Chef Carl Stanton and Justin Hare.

“We don’t reveal how much they’ve raised until the end; it’s a secret,” Johnson said. “But I will say they are neck and neck.”

veryone has different qualms about the Florida Keys community in which they live.

Maybe it’s a lack of affordable housing, homelessness or heavy traffic on the Overseas Highway — at least those were the top three on a list of concerns for Middle Keys residents last time Monroe County did a community health assessment.

Now is the time for residents to get involved and let county officials know what tops their own personal lists of health concerns.

“This is not just another Health Department survey,” said Alison Kerr, public information officer. “This is countywide and we need everyone to be involved so we can take action and identify community health priorities and strengthen programs.”

Kerr said since she released the survey last week, about 130 people have responded.

“The more the merrier. We want all the representation we can get,” she said.

People who live, work and spend time in the Keys can fill it out online, and it takes roughly five to 10 minutes. Face-toface interviews will be conducted as well, Kerr said.

The anonymous survey, which is available through the end of the month, is one of several steps in the informationgathering process. The first part, titled Public Health Essential Services, happened Oct. 31 with a meeting of more than 30 medical professionals in Key West. Their part involved a 100-question survey relating to what the county is doing to address public health concerns.

“We’re ranked pretty high in cirrhosis and drowning and motor vehicle accidents among those who are drinking alcohol,” Kerr said.

That’s been the case for a few years. Kerr said last year 23 percent of residents countywide engage in binge drinking, the highest in the state of all 67 counties. Monroe County also has the highest alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis death rate in the state, she said.

On Nov. 1, a public meeting was held with about 30 people in attendance, and it allowed people to share some of the issues, strengths, weaknesses and threats facing Monroe.

“All of that data in the four-hour meeting and the Oct. 31 meeting will go into the countywide assessment, and we’re still crunching the data,” Kerr said.

hanks to a $20,000 grant from State Farm, Marathon resident Sandra Bradshaw has a new set of stairs at her Sombrero Beach Road home, and it came on her birthday.

Local and state officials gathered Nov. 1 to congratulate her and sing the birthday song while lauding the work of State Farm and Habitat for Humanity.

Clients all over the country who are under insured or uninsured have been getting help through the grants from State Farm, which go to Habitat for projects completed with volunteer help.

Habitat provides reduced-cost repairs to damaged homes and charges clients 50 percent of project costs, while the rest is covered by grants such as the State Farm’s.

“Right after Hurricane Irma, we went to the national Habitats and asked local chapters that had homes affected by Irma to apply

for grants,” said Jose Soto, State Farm spokesman. “We have five other Habitats across Florida that were able to secure $20,000 also.” “#HabitatHammersBack is an extension of our mission to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter,” said Christine Todd Young, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys, and even though it’s been more than a year since the storm, the program is helping Marathon rebuild.

Repairs may include accessibility (stairs and wheelchair ramps), drywall, insulation, doors, flooring, and other items to make the home safe and secure. Habitat works with volunteer groups, local youth (16 years and older) and young professional volunteers to accomplish this work.

“We mobilize two construction sites per week using eight volunteers per day at each site. Our goal is to complete 200 repairs and build 20 new affordable homes over the next three years,” Young said.

So far this year, Habitat has completed 72 repairs, with 15 in process, and has many pending applications.

HALLIBURTON, TRANSOCEAN SETTLEMENT MONEY AVAILABLE FROM DEEPWATER HORIZON KATIE ATKINS

S

ettlement money is still being paid out eight years after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded off the Gulf Coast, killing 11 of 126 workers on board and resulting in an 87-day oil spill.

The damage done by 134 million gallons spewing into the Gulf of Mexico resulted in two different settlements, making for the largest total environmental damage settlement in history: $20.8 billion approved by a federal district judge in 2016. It ended all civil and criminal penalty claims against the owners and operators of the Deepwater Horizon rig – BP, Anadarko, TransOcean and Halliburton. It also included economic damage claims submitted by the five Gulf states and their local governments.

Those who were part of the BP settlement, which has now been paid out, can start the process with TransOcean and Halliburton, said Marathon-based attorney Rich Malafy. He specializes in real estaterelated litigation.

Monroe County had a “presumption of causation,” meaning damages and losses were presumed to be caused by the oil spill.

And the second part: the Halliburton and TransOcean settlement set aside more than $1.2 billion, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Of that, $902 million will be distributed to certain plaintiffs as punitive damages and $337 million will be distributed to existing Deepwater Horizon economic loss claimants.

To be a part of the TransOcean and Halliburton settlement, you would have to have lived in Monroe County or one of the other affected counties and show a loss over a certain period of time, Malafy said.

“A lot of people got discouraged about the BP settlement because you had to come up with records going years back,” Malafy said. “As long as you did the BP settlement, you’ve already done the heavy lifting and we just have to push the ball over the goal line.”

Aside from the deaths of hundreds of thousands of animals and extensive damage to beaches and wetlands, coastal businesses experienced economic losses and real estate deals fell through in the Keys. The Keys were threatened by the oil spill, and even though none made it here, fear led many tourists to change their vacation plans.

The oil left Gulf Coast states reeling from a devastated ecosystem, the deaths of as many as 105,400 sea birds, 7,600 adult and 160,000 juvenile sea turtles, and up to a 51-percent decrease in dolphins in Louisiana’s Barataria Bay, according to NOAA. When Congress passed the RESTORE Act in 2012, it dedicated 80 percent of all administrative and civil penalties from the responsible parties to ecological and economic recovery efforts in the Gulf.

he Marathon High School drama club is tackling one of the classics this weekend. “The Crucible” plays Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10 with a 7 p.m. curtain in the school auditorium.

Admission is $10.

“It’s a pretty heavy show,” said director and MHS science teacher Carollynn Cox. “I’ve really enjoyed seeing my students pick out the subtleties in the subtext and finding examples and references and allusions to the play in our everyday lives. The actors have been texting each other recently about stories they’ve read in Time magazine, and seen on the Netflix series ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.’”

Playwright Arthur Miller’s story is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692-93. The play was penned in 1953, at the height of “McCarthyism,” when the United States government persecuted people accused of being communists.

Unfortunately, many Americans today feel as if we are revisiting the era with accusations on both sides of the aisle about possible collusion with the Soviet Union regarding election outcomes.

“It’s very timely,” said Cox of the play choice.

Indeed, the play is a maelstrom of accusations, confessions, disavowals, affairs and more accusations.

Cox said this interpretation of “The Crucible” has much to do with youth.

“To me, it’s akin to little girls having a sleepover and trying a séance, but in the play it’s girls playing in the woods,” Cox said. “They got caught and didn’t want to get in trouble so they started accusing the adults of being witches. Then they got sick and adults started blaming the unexplained sickness on witchcraft and a number of people were executed.”

It was a lose-lose scenario. For persons falsely accused of witchcraft, the only way to save their lives and avoid being put to death was to confess to witchcraft. In the end, John Proctor (played by Aaron Tipsword) marches off to a martyr’s death as he refuses to give a false confession.

Look for other standout performances by Shannon Pitchford (Elizabeth Proctor), Nicole Joniaux (Abigail Williams), Isaac Millsaps (Judge Danforth), Jay Walters (Rev. John Hale), Sara Gonzalez (Mary Warren) and Amber Romance (Tituba).

oday, Key Vaca falls under the umbrella term Marathon. Perhaps its earliest owner was a Spanish friar named Francisco Ferreira. Recognized under the Spanish Land Grants, a program encouraging pioneer settlement much like the American version of homesteading, he was granted ownership of Key Vaca, Boot, Viper (Grassy), Duck, and Knight keys by the Spanish in 1814.

Ownership of the islands from that point forward gets a little murky.

Ferreira apparently sold Duck Key to Soloman Snyder on June 11, 1823.

The collection of islands, including Duck Key, was sold to Ferreira’s friend Isaac Cox for $3,000. Cox, in turn, sold the islands to Charles Howe in 1827 for $1,500. To confuse matters more, according to Monroe County Deed Book A, those five islands were sold to Charles Howe by the widow of Ferreira on Dec. 8, 1827 for $333.

It is not surprising that the ownership of Key Vaca would be argued in court for decades. Only one other piece of property, Key West, had a recognized owner under the Spanish Land Grants prior to the incorporation of the Florida Territory under the AdamsOnis Treaty of 1819. Not surprisingly, the ownership of Key West also had dubious beginnings.

That’s the word that won the 2016 (Not So) Annual Spelling Bee benefiting Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys. The (not-so) annual bee took place last in 2016 with “The New-Bees” — Hannah Salmons, Mary Stella, and Kara Pascucci — bringing home a win.

The second-place team from Stanley Switlik went out on rhynchocephalia, but won best costume for their “spellosophers.”

“As a natural sesquipedalian,” said champ Mary Stella, who won’t be at the bee this year, “I’m disappointed but look forward to competing next year.”

Her advice to this year’s teams – study and practice. “The study list is helpful,” with words like aardvark and zymurgy on it. “However, you will be asked to spell words not on the list.”

The first bee took place before the new millennium, and the event has been sporadic due to hurricanes, making it (sometimes) annual. It is one of two main fundraisers that benefit Habitat for Humanity of the Middle

Keys, and this year, seven local families will reap the rewards. It directly aids the construction of four new homes, revamping two “recycled” homes, and rebuilding an Irma-destroyed home in Marathon.

“There is space for a couple more teams,” said Habitat for Humanity’s Administrative Manager Jess D’Ascanio.

“Spectating the event is a blast as well.”

n Sunday, Nov. 11, the Florida Keys will pause to honor veterans’ service to our country. Some are homegrown who have returned to the Keys and picked up the threads of work and family. Others have chosen to move to the Keys and start a new life. Thank you for your service.

CORBIN HRADECKY, 29 Hometown: Beaver, Pennsylvania Branch: Marines In the Keys: since 2013

Corbin Hradecky can be found usually in his patrol car all over town as a deputywith Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, but before he called the Keys home, he traveled to Afghanistan, Latvia, Romania, Ireland, Germany and Australia as a corporal in the Marines. “But my favorite place to hang out would be Sparky’s Landing,” he said. “Hats off to owners Matt and Carolyn Anthony; great people and very supportive of our armed forces.” He enlisted at 18 and cherishes the brotherhood and the bond he formed with his fellow squad mates and service members.

JEAN E. PROSPER, 37 Hometown: Miami, Florida Branch: Army Family: Married with four kids Jean Prosper works in the beautiful city of Marathon for the fire department and loves his B-shift schedule. He was honorably discharged in 2008 after enlisting at 18 years old. “I traveled a lot within the United States,” he said, “and deployed to Vicenza, Italy.” He stays in contact with a few of his brothers from service, and “enjoyed the friends I made and the teamwork it took to accomplish missions.”

CHUCK LINDSEY, 46 Hometown: Thousand Oaks, California Branch: Coast Guard Family: Leslie, Keygan and Bosun Stationed in the Keys in 2010, moved here in 2015 “Working with the finest men and women our nation has to offer” is what kept Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey in the U.S. Coast Guard for 24 years. He was stationed from Alaska to the Keys, Central America, the Middle East, Africa and Japan. Now he enjoys fishing with his son Bosun, 6, when not at City Hall.

After graduating for Marathon High School at 18, Mike Card enlisted with the 75th Rangers of the 39th “Rat Patrol,” where he quickly added “hooah.”

For four years, he gained confidence in what he could and couldn’t do. Things like jumping out of airplanes came easy to him. “It pushed me to unbelievable boundaries,” he said. “It was a great place to start as an 18-year-old.”

When he isn’t at Marathon Fire Department, he can be found on the water with his wife Brandi, having fun fishing and diving the beautiful waters of the Caribbean.(He lost his military pictures when he lost his house in Hurricane Irma. “They are somewhere in the canal,” he said.)

JIM GRIFFITH, 52 Hometown: Tampa, Florida Branch: Coast Guard Family: A daughter In the Keys: since 1991 When Jim Griffith isn’t working at public works, he spendshis time mostly on the water, fishing and diving. He spent time at several stations around the U.S. and all over the Caribbean and as far as Columbia and Panama on Law Enforcement Detachment. He enlisted at 17 for five years and loved handling the boats and being deployed on U.S. Navy ships performing drug interdiction operations. He and his crew also handled search and rescue cases.

Attorney Tom Wright is one of Marathon’s “Few Good Men”and he got his start in law with 29 years in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. His first orders to Key West in January 1976 solidified that the Keys would one day be his permanent home. He’s been called to Newport, R.I., Norfolk, Va., Seattle, Japan and many other places, and keeps in contact with many of the friends he has made over the years.

Veterans Parade set for Nov. 11 Join local veterans on Sunday, Nov. 11 for the annual Veterans Day Parade. Participants will line up at 20th Street (former entrance to Boot Key Bridge) starting at 10 a.m. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and travel north on U.S.1 turning left on 107th Street and left again on Aviation Blvd., ending at the DAV building. The public is encouraged to enter a vehicle/float or come out to watch.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The “six inches over the knee” rule. The best rule is that we are allowed to leave school during lunch.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? That Drama Club is actually fun.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am a member of Drama Club and Mu Alpha Theta. They are important to me because I get to spend more time with my friends and help others.

What are your plans after high school?

I want to attend University of Central Florida and major in biomedical sciences.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MHS? I hope to be remembered as “that girl with the accent.”

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I spend most of my time at school, but I would love to have more time to relax and watch Netflix.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No, the Keys are a beautiful place to live in but after a while it gets boring.

I would like to have a degree in biomedical sciences and be on my way to becoming a pediatrician.

arathon High took on the Hurricanes of Coral Shores in a fun and competitive meet on Nov. 1 in the Marathon High School weight room.

Coral Shores, coached by Erin King, traveled to Marathon with a roster of 12 athletes in its inaugural season to take on the Lady Fins. Marathon has fielded a team for the past four years, often having to travel to Miami and Fort Lauderdale to find competition.

“It’s great to have some competition closer to home,” said Marathon Coach Jesse Schubert.

Marathon’s team carries a roster of 21 girls ranging from ninth to 12th grade and a strong group of eighthgraders practicing for a shot on the team next year. With half the team brand-new to weightlifting, Schubert said, “The leadership of seniors Oriana Mendez, Hannah Ziels and Rachel Lebo has been great. I’m very proud of how the older girls are stepping up and the young girls are willing to listen and learn.”

COUNTING TO 20 The City of Marathon approaches two decades

N

ine years ago, I wrote a column titled “The Next 10 Years” about the City of Marathon’s 10th Anniversary. Having been out of the Council for three years at that point, I looked at the achievements of the past 10 years, and what goals the city should work toward for the next decade.

Flash forward nine years, and it’s interesting to see what we’ve accomplished. I wrote that it would become obvious that Marathon did the right thing by moving forward with our wastewater and stormwater projects, and the years between then and now have proven this correct. We quit flushing our toilets into our nearshore waters, and we had begun to notice marked improvement in water quality.

I wrote about the need to redevelop our then-offline hotels and resort properties; what we have today and coming online in the near future portends good things for our local economy. We now have an inventory of rooms and suites in different price strata, and the families we want to see in our town can take advantage of a number of lodging options.

Our local attractions have really made great strides as well. Improvements at The Turtle Hospital, Crane Point, Pigeon Key and the Dolphin Research Center have raised the bar, while the relatively new Aquarium Encounters offers an experience that one can’t find anywhere else. As the Old Seven Mile Bridge and Sunset Park rehabilitation projects near completion, Marathon will offer not only fishing and diving options comparable to anywhere else in the Keys, we will also be able to offer local environmental and historical attractions available nowhere else.

One issue I wrote about then still exists: the lack of regularly scheduled commercial air service at Florida Keys Marathon International Airport.

Although we do have Customs and Immigration at the airport, it would be nice to see an airline offer competitive and convenient Marathon legs from larger hubs.

Of course, the unpredictable often throws a spanner into the works. Hurricane Irma and the ongoing recovery are going to demand a significant amount of governmental and private sector efforts as we make Marathon even better. Fourteen months after Irma, local governments still haven’t seen a dime in long-promised FEMA reimbursement funds. We have parks, beaches and other infrastructure that need work and rehab — and those FEMA dollars would come in handy.

We’re still looking at months of effort as we continue to rebuild.

And the “gift” of 300 affordable housing units from the state to the City of Marathon has now turned into another growth debate, with the usual players lined up to oppose any new units, no matter how necessary. Loaded with flawed data, ridiculous assumptions, mendacious allegations, and precious little regard for the people who make their lives and livelihoods here, the nogrowthers are once again standing up in opposition to absolutely necessary affordable housing.

While other areas of the Keys may want to take a different approach with their gifted affordable units, Marathon is different. We have the infrastructure to support them. We have the developable land on which to build them.

We have people who will build these units, and we have many more people who need them. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is lying.

Regardless of outside interference, I am still optimistic that Marathon will be better than before. Our economy will thrive, our infrastructure will be made better, our waters will be made cleaner, and the things that drew us to these islands originally are still here.

We have a lot of work to get to 20, but I know we are up to the challenge.

THAT’S AMORE Under new ownership, Driftwood Pizza soaring to new levels

Dough is made fresh every morning, and there could be changes to the recipe in the coming months.

Piscetello, a Connecticut native, is going to attempt to perfect his recipe and use it at Driftwood, but there are several factors that make a Florida pizza taste different than a Connecticut pizza, even if the recipe is the same.

Is it the humidity or the salty air?

Most pizza connoisseurs agree it’s a combination, but most likely, it’s what’s in the water.

“Before I left Connecticut I mastered my dough recipe, so I’m going to try it next week,” he said. “If it works,

hen the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore, and Marathon is in love with Driftwood Pizza, Pasta and Subs.

The shop at MM 53 oceanside is under new ownership, and in the last eight months a lot has changed. Reviewers online have been raving about the friendly customer service, fresh ingredients and prompt deliveries — all of which are especially appreciated in the laidback Florida Keys.

Manager Tony Piscetello is humble about the number of times his name is mentioned in the Facebook reviews.

He gives a sly smile, and explains with modesty all of the changes he made from the start when hired in March.

“Our cheese is different now. We use the highest quality cheese on the market,” he said, adding it’s made with buffalo milk. “On our large pizzas, we have about a pound of cheese on them. It gets expensive.”

And the sauce? Completely different, Piscetello said.

“Everything is made in house now, and the dough is a little different from what it used to be, flour-wise,” he said.

it works, and if the dough acts like I want it to act, I’m going to just do it and we will go with the flow, if that makes sense.”

Piscetello is making improvements everywhere he can. He has expanded the menu, changed the logo, made changes inside the restaurant and wants to buy new ovens. He wants to offer other types of pizza too, like thin crust, pan-style and deep dish.

“We truly will be the best pizza place. It’s our goal,” he said. “It’s great because we’ve already improved. We’ve made huge strides.”

Marathon residents think so too.

They voted Driftwood the No. 1 pizza in Marathon at the Weekly’s Best of Marathon awards. The most popular pizza at the moment is the Driftwood Special: cheese, pepperoni, ham, mushrooms, onion, green peppers and bacon.

“But people are getting into the different ones we’ve added. They’re slowly finding out what’s good,” Piscetello said.

He thinks the Roma pizza is the menu’s hidden gem. It has a ricotta base, pepperoni, onions and green peppers.

“It’s a really good pie,” he said.

Driftwood is becoming more involved in the community through donations to special events and gaining more of a presence.

“We want people to know we’re here,” Piscetello said. “We’re going to do whatever it takes and you never know what we’re going to become in the future.”

Driftwood Pizza is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and can be reached at 305-742-8770.

Delivery is available from Marathon to Grassy Key and even Duck Key. Driftwood is always looking for quality employees as well, Piscetello said.
