A

fter nearly two weeks working in Panama City and the surrounding areas, the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s Hurricane Michael Recovery Team returned home.

On Oct. 15, Brian O’Conner, Matt Mansueto, Dylan Moore, Aaron Anker, Mick O’Conner and Bryan O’Berry began their Hurricane Michael recovery mission. In a scene eerily similar to that of the Keys after Hurricane Irma, local and out-of-state water and wastewater utilities teamed up to track down and repair damaged mains, in an all-out effort to restore water service.

Knowing that resources would be scarce, the crew arrived prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing a travel trailer and supplies, along with several pieces of heavy equipment to get the job done.

With Hurricane Irma fresh in their minds, the crews were determined, knowing that restoring water service was critical to the recovery and the health and safety of the residents.

BAND PLAYS FOR FREE ON MONDAY

T

he locally loved cover band Badfish returns to Sunset Pier at Ocean Key Resort for a free concert on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. The band is heralded as one of the best cover bands in the country, and “Badfish, A Tribute to Sublime” has become a hotly anticipated tradition on the usually maxed-out pier.

“We know the locals really love this show,” said bass guitarist Joel Hanks, who has been with the band since its inception in 2001. “It’s so fun to play this gig out on the pier and see everyone having fun and singing along to the lyrics.”

Locals especially love the ’90s California surf culture covers that hit ska, punk, reggae and alterative notes. They sing along to the covers like “Don’t Push,” “Wrong Way,” “What I Got” and “Santeria.”

“They always make room in their schedule for the Key West fans,” said Ocean Key Resort’s Food and Beverage Director Rodger Levering, who is a fan himself. “It’s a free show, so we just want everyone to come out and have a great time. Badfish loves playing here and we love having them.”

This will be the band’s seventh time playing the pier, although they have been coming to the Keys since 2001, when the band was formed – more than 2,000 shows ago.

“It’s just such a cool spot to play,” he said, referencing some of the boats that anchor around the pier.

Based in Rhode Island, the band is most looking forward to the warm weather and playing tourist for a few days. But, in the midst of riding jet skis, parasailing, and renting mopeds, they said their favorite part is hanging by the Ocean Key Resort pool and exploring the off-the-beaten-path late night spots.

Drummer Scott Begin said the original Sublime album served as a soundtrack for his high school and college years.

This is the band’s first trip back since Hurricane Irma, and Hanks added that he likes to visit the Keys with his wife on their off time, especially the Lower Keys. “We were all eyes on the Keys before, during and after the hurricane,” he said. “We are very glad to get back and see some of our fans and wish well for everyone who was affected.”

MARTHA ROBINSON LOVES HER KINGDOM

S

it next to Martha Robinson; it’s wildly entertaining. Between her delightful character and genuine affection for people, she defines Key West charm.

After 30 years here, it’s hard not to be enraptured by her: from Key West real estate stories to her penchant for collecting from every artist who ever painted here. Plus she’s a secret equestrian. Originally from Chappaqua, New York, she has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY, but realized being a real estate agent would be far more fun than being a therapist. She got a great start in the business by working with the women who began the MLS (multiple listing service) that is Realtors’ backbone today.

Since moving to Key West permanently in 1987, Robinson has been selling the Keys with Ed Knight at Prudential Knight Realty, now known as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Knight & Gardner Realty. She in turn has given back tenfold to the community, serving on multiple boards, supporting the arts and becoming Fantasy Fest Queen in 1999. She has followed in both her grandfather and father’s footsteps in real estate.

She also credits her mother, Nancy, whose moniker was “Queen” as well. But really, Robinson is the best of all worlds because, as she says, “I just tell it like it is.”

Do you have a life credo or motto? Love, inclusion, diversity and tolerance.

What about Key West has had the biggest influence on you? It was owning the Red Doors (a clothing shop on Caroline) from ’91 to ’93 and opening my eyes to Key West history.

You are passionate about the community; what important topics should we be talking about? 30 years later, I still don’t talk about politics with clients, but people do ask me to run for mayor. Seriously, the issues are affordable housing for our workforce of wonderful servers and people behind the scenes, and traffic with our congested streets.

You have a great sense of humor; what makes you laugh? Humor. People’s stories and situations I find myself in make me laugh. And animals at their antics.

You’re a part of multiple Key West organizations; which ones? The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys, Botanical Gardens: Board of Governors, Key West Business Guild, Chamber of Commerce, Lodging Association, Key West Art and Historical Society, Key West Realtors Association, AIDS Help, Metropolitan Community Church since 1988, and Equality Florida and I support all the theaters and the FKSPCA. If you could give advice to Key Westers what would it be? Respect and help each other in times of trouble. Don’t be greedy; you can get what you want with hard work.

Which TV, movie, or superhero character is your alter ego? Maybe Hoda Kotb from the “Today” show.

What is your nerdiest passion? My costume closet and my art collection.

What is your most treasured possession?

My rescue animals dogs, Earl and Lucy, Dave the cat and my turtles. Also, my artwork collection with an original Audubon and original Mario Sanchez.

If invisible in Key West, what would you do? Can’t be, I am too visible with my heart on my sleeve. Just wish I wasn’t so ADHD … look there’s a squirrel …

On what occasion do you lie? I can’t lie, and if I do, I end up coming clean. My father drummed that into me along with respect.

And I won’t do it as a Realtor because it’s not about the money. I love and respect my clients too much and take that seriously.

Favorite guilty pleasure? All ethnic food, good wine, caviar and sour cream, ice cream … and a lot of napkins.

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? That boaters and visitors respect and protect our precious waters and the powers that be close parts of Duval Street to cars and traffic!

ticks and stones may break my bones, but chains and whips excite me.

From Rihanna lyrics to “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the BDSM world has entered public discourse and sparks curiosity and titillation.

During Fantasy Fest, it’s par for the course to see men and women walking Duval clad in leather bondage-inspired outfits, even the occasional partygoer on a leash.

“People were tantalized and intrigued by what they saw or read but they didn’t know much about it,” says Dr. Pamela Stephenson Connolly. A psychologist, sexologist, and sex therapist based in Key West, Connolly spoke at the Custom House’s “Distinguished Speaker” series on Oct. 25.

Connolly’s research was in response to “the body of psychoanalytic literature” about BDSM, which she described as “extremely negative,” in which community members were previously diagnosed as mentally ill or otherwise marginalized and stigmatized.

where her patients included people from the BDSM community.

She said, “As soon as their mental health specialists knew they participated in BDSM, they became identified with patients who had a problem that was largely sexual.”

Connolly embarked on a large study of people living in California who self-identified as being a part of the BDSM community. She felt it was an urgent concern, as “People interested in erotic BDSM would find themselves in court, fighting custody battles, losing their jobs, and base it on them being practitioners of BDSM.” She conducted a study on the psychological attributes of people in the BDSM community, and her research question, to vastly oversimplify, was: Are they really crazy?

For those not versed in the language of the community, BDSM stands for: “Bondage Discipline Sadism and Masochism.” It describes a variety of behaviors that people engage in, from which they derive extreme sexual pleasure, often married with pain. She described “light” or “heavy” play, which runs the gamut from spanking and light corseting to scarification, branding and “breath play,” in which a person limits their airflow. She mentioned an extreme case: “a doctor and a nurse who played like this and they knew how to revive each other.” Not a night in the sack for the faint of heart (or lungs)!

However, those who came to the Custom House to be titillated may have been disappointed.

Connolly is an academic, careful to present her work with accuracy and detail. The study that she conducted and presented was published in The Journal of Psychology and Human Sexuality.

“There was very little research on BDSM and what existed was

non-empirical and hypothetical or single case studies,” she said. She gave an example of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, who might write a case study on one type of person, and it would be applied to a large subset of people.

“Assumed psychopathology underlies all BDSM behaviors, including those expressed safely and consensually.” Some things psychoanalytic writers have said or written about BDSM claim that the subjects’ sexual behaviors are a result of early trauma, unresolved infantile conflicts, PTSD, depression, BPSD, narcissism, paranoia, or compulsion.

Connolly’s study was conducted on 132 BDSM practitioners in Southern California, with a mean age of 43, a good mix of male vs. female and gay vs. straight, though admittedly little racial diversity. The study administered seven commonly used psychological tests. Her findings reflected no significant elevation in depression or trauma between BDSM and the general population.

She did find somewhat elevated anxiety, but as she said, “Anxiety is part of the deal. It helps create the endorphins that connect the

pleasure with the pain.” She also found some elevated narcissism in “doms,” or the dominant partners, which ahem! were largely men, while submission correlated more with anxiety (and women).

She also gave examples of questions on the psychological tests that might inadvertently skew the results, like “Would you ever hurt a loved one?”

Connolly put what others might consider peculiar proclivities in more relatable terms: “The feeling of giving power and switching power is ubiquitous across humans, and there is a power exchange that is acted out.” While she may not describe her work as advocacy, she brings to light the discrimination that people in the BDSM community experience. Her subjects expressed that “a fear of discovery” can negatively impact their overall sense of safety in the world.

The good news? In Key West, you can let your freak flag fly, and as further evidence, a number of audience members were wearing their fishnets and leather.

OPEN ENROLLMENT STARTS TODAY MARKETPLACE HEALTH INSURANCE EXPLAINED high number of service industry workers and family-owned businesses goes hand in hand with Monroe County’s high rate of uninsured residents. The local rate of 19 percent uninsured for 2017 topped the statewide average of 13 percent for the year, and was more than double the national average of 8.7 percent uninsured, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

Nov. 1 marks Day 1 of open enrollment to get coverage for 2019 under the Affordable Care Act, and we’ve put together some basic information on how to go about doing so. It may be easier than you think to get coverage from the health insurance marketplace, especially if you’re young, healthy and between 26 and 34 years old – the age range in Monroe containing the highest number of uninsured residents.

“If you’re eligible for a subsidy there’s probably a plan you can get for free,” said Dixie Humelsine of Dixie Humelsine Insurance in Islamorada. “If you can get a subsidy, Monroe County is a great place to purchase health insurance on the marketplace.” Qualifying factors for a subsidy involve age, income and county of residency.

“There are so many bits and pieces to it, and coverage is not that hard to get, but there are so many little caveats and there are so many things to be careful of,” said Stacey Dumas of Benefit Solutions of Florida. “If you’re a single person on a low income, then the chances are really good you’ll be able to get a high subsidy and costshare reduction.”

Humelsine said, as an example, a single person making $30,000 in the Keys would be eligible for a little more than $600 per month as a subsidy for a plan with a higher deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. The lower the annual income, the higher the subsidy will be, but that goes for Monroe County because it has a high cost of living. By comparison, a single person with a $40,000 salary living in Homestead, Miami-Dade County, would have to pay $227 per month for the cheapest coverage.

Florida Blue is the only health insurance company on the Marketplace offering coverage, and Humelsine recommends talking to an agent (which is free) to get a clear idea about coverage for the coming year. Do not take advice from marketplace operators who answer the 1-800 number, she said.

“They are not there to give you insurance advice,” she said. “There are options, so talk to someone who understands this stuff, and we don’t charge you, whether you do it yourself or use an agent. An agent will make your life so much easier.”

Dumas also suggests people talk to an agent, navigator or assister, and do it in the next 15 days because “People often think they can get health insurance at any time, then get upset when they find out they have to wait until open enrollment,” Dumas said.

Additionally, Humelsine said it’s important for people who already have marketplace insurance to update or make changes to their plan now, “because if you do nothing, the insurance you have now will automatically renew.”

umelsine cautioned people with Medicare to review their plans carefully for the coming year.

“There have been a lot of changes to Medicare drug plans in Monroe County.

This year we had 22 plans available, and next year we have 27, so there are some startling changes and it’s not smart for people to just assume they’re going to be covered the same way next year,” she said.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) is a free program offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and your local Area Agency on Aging.

Humelsine recommends speaking to Pam Martin at 305-853-0907 about Medicare.

Defining the terms: Subsidy – Money the government will contribute monthly toward a person’s premium.

Premium – Amount owed per month for health insurance coverage.

Deductible - The amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to contribute. With a $2,000 deductible, for example, you pay the first $2,000 of covered services yourself, with help from the insurance company for services thereafter.

Out-of-pocket maximum - The most you have to pay for covered services in a plan year. After you spend this amount on deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, your health plan pays the costs of other covered benefits.

Co-pay – A fixed amount for a covered service, paid by a patient to the provider of service.

Cost share reduction - A discount that lowers the amount you have to pay for deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.

ANCHORS AWEIGH THE EXPERIMENT IN INTERNATIONAL LIVING KICKS OFF ANOTHER YEAR IN MONROE COUNTY

L

iving abroad is an adventure, especially as a young person finding a place in the world. For many, it’s a dream, but that dream became a reality for 39 Monroe County high school students who participated in the Experiment in International Living in the summer of 2018.

It wasn’t always comfortable or glamorous. Samantha Smith, a junior from Key West who went to Mongolia as part of the Nomadic Culture and Outdoor Adventure, experienced living in a ger, or one room hut, with a family of six and no running water.

“I learned a lot about myself, because it pushes you so far out of your comfort zone,” said Smith. She experienced life without regular showers or other amenities of home.

“I had never left the country before, and I didn’t have any other idea of what poverty looked like. … There is a big difference between wealth here compared to other countries.”

Adriana Otero, who traveled to Spain for a Language and Culture Program, also had an experience that shifted her perspective. Of the high population of homeless people she observed, she said, “It just made me have more compassion toward people without homes, especially older people and those with disabilities.”

Valuable lessons about socioeconomics are not the only things the students learned.

Smith had the opportunity to observe “the Mongolian version of the Olympics,” and to go out in traditional Mongolian clothing.

She also learned basic Mongolian, which was “like a mixture between Chinese and Russian.” Otero experienced the differences between her Cuban-inflected Spanish and the Spanish spoken in Spain. “It’s very proper over there,” she said. “No slang!” Otero visited museums and saw Spanish films, and she traveled from Madrid to Toledo to Guadix. She observed the richness of the Muslim culture in Spain, which changed her previous assumptions about the Middle East being the singular hub of Islam. “No one culture is only rooted in one place, and everything is connected.”

More Monroe County students will soon have the opportunity to participate in The Experiment in International Living. On Sunday, Nov. 4, the program will be holding an event at the DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Key Resort Hotel in Key West, to welcome back the Monroe County students. The Experiment has existed for more than 85 years and has more than 30 programs that send students to 25 countries. Their programs include sustainability and the environment; arts and social change; language and cultural discovery; leadership training; or peace, politics, and human rights.

“The Experiment in International Living delivers concrete benefits in terms of life experience and professional training,” said World Learning CEO Carol Jenkins.

There will also be up to 35 scholarships of $5,000 to $8,000 awarded to students who compete in The Monroe County Global Leaders Essay Contest. Take Stock in Children, which supports low-income and highachieving students, has long been a partner of Monroe County Schools, and about 25 percent of applicants are coming through the TSIC pipeline.

Said College Success Coach for TSIC Lindsay Moore, “I think they’re looking to develop their character, because most of them have lived on an island in the Florida Keys, and it’s an opportunity to be exposed to life to a greater cultural experience outside of South Florida. And it’s an opportunity to gain independence and meet people who have a different way of living life.” Moore said that

the essay contest garners hundreds of applications. The Experiment is a global draw and partners with educational organizations around the world to create programs for students. Most students live abroad for about one month.

The Experiment is certainly a life-changer. Said Otero: “I definitely speak Spanish better.” The senior is applying to colleges for next fall, and has her sights set on a pre-law path. “I’ve thought about doing immigration law and taking more Spanish classes.”

“I didn’t realize what I was capable of,” said Smith. “I can already tell that coming back, how much I’ve changed. Before, I was pretty shy and not outspoken at all, and now, I’ve realized I don’t care about the things I used to care about, like how I look.”

The Nov. 4 event opens the season for applications.

LIVING, DRINKING IN THE MOMENT THE JOURNEY OF ONE WITH LIFE — FROM NEW YORK TO KEY WEST.

L

isa Elovich describes her One With Life (OWL) organic tequila as “99% peaceful 1% wild!”. A fitting tagline, not only for a tequila that Forbes recently named to its “Top Tequilas To Drink This Autumn”—but one that is equally symbolic of Elovich’s journey from attorney, judge, life coach and boxing promoter to a practitioner of peacefulness and adventure in the tequila business.

Recently, One With Life Tequila was the official tequila of Fantasy Fest. But the brand’s passage into the Southernmost City began in upstate New York, where Elovich’s career as a criminal justice attorney spanned from assistant district attorney in the Manhattan district attorney’s office to law judge for the Department of Children and Family Services.

“I did go through some inner-engineering at the age of 40,” said Elovich. “A divorce and retirement prompted a shift in consciousness.”

Elovich said she experienced a lifechanging shift after studying Eastern philosophy, yoga and Buddhism — where she learned that a sense of peace can be installed into any industry.

“When I decided to retire from the state, I knew I wanted to do something like boxing that is fun, adventurous and mysterious,” said Elovich. “And one day, after reading a book by Eckhart Tolle, I was sitting on the beach thinking about how I could be one with life and I began my vision for One With Life.”

Elovich said she chose tequila because it is the drink among friends that embodies laughter and not “taking oneself too seriously.” And that OWL was the metaphor that symbolized “being in the moment.”

“I truly believe you create your own reality by starting with a thought and then taking huge steps to create a dream,” said Elovich. “I didn’t just want to create a pure, organic tequila. I wanted to use it as a vessel to spread the message of ‘one with life.’”

Soon after her epiphany, Elovich began intensive research on tequila — from the

aging processes to harvesting. And after contacting various journalists through articles she had read, Elovich connected with Gonzalo Spindola-Garcia, who would shape her dream.

“Gonzalo introduced me to the Montez brothers in Mexico,” said Elovich. “They have big brands of tequila, but they also produce a clean, pure, organic tequila. I knew this was the distillery I wanted to work with.”

Today, One With Life Tequila is served in more than 400 accounts from New York to Key West and is rapidly expanding. OWL is made with no simple sugar and its agave plant takes seven years to develop. The Montez brothers use no pesticides on the agave plants, instead using traps for invasive bugs.

“OWL is truly authentic and organic,” said Elovich. “It is 100 percent pure. No yeast. No preservatives. All agave with natural airborne fermentation and distilled water.”

In another serendipitous turn, Elovich met seasoned spirits sales director Grant Portier, through Portier’s fiancé at 22&Co Bar in Key West. Portier, who spent eight years as state manager for Tito’s Vodka, eventually made the jump to Elovich’s team.

“It’s a tiny family brand with so much potential,” said Portier. “We don’t have the assets of big brands, but building brands is what I love to do. Love the quality of OWL’s story. We are a bunch of passionate people working to build an amazing brand.”

n a town that loves singer/ songwriters, Livingston Taylor should feel at home. Having visited and played in Key West multiple times in his five-decade career, he’s happy to be returning to the Key West Theater Nov. 16.

Taylor is a part of the Taylor music dynasty, including brother James, Hugh, Alex and Kate and also exin-law Carly Simon, that has ruled a genre of soulful folk music crafted over decades of experience. Still going strong, Taylor will liven up the stage and our sentimental hearts for one night only.

With his 16th album, “Safe Home,” released last year, Taylor is the essence of quality and craft when it comes to music making.

“I like to surprise people with an incredible range of things,” said Taylor, who has been known to cover classics from Paul McCartney, the Everly Brothers and Rodgers and Hammerstein to, yes, even his brother James’s music.

“I let the music drift into interesting places,” said Taylor about his off the cuff concerts. His career started back in the ’60s by opening for greats like Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt which led to his own Top-40 hits in the ’70s that include “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman.”

Taylor is proud that he has been making a living as a musician since he was 16 years old, having learned the guitar at 13.

“I am a bit of a contrarian and tend to mix it up,” said Taylor. His day job is at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for the past 28 years; he says his students describe him as quirky and enthusiastic. “I bring that to the stage so we can have a good time together. The music allows me to be in the presence of my audience and when I am not around them, I miss them.”

Some of his more famous students have included Gavin DeGraw, John Mayer, Charlie Puth, and blues singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi.

As a professor, Taylor is outspoken about music today and keeping his students away from influences like social media and machines when it comes to making music. “It’s a problem for kids today not to craft something without the help of a machine and then if they get a few likes on social media, they think it’s good,” says the wise old musician. Last year, the documentary “Life is Good” was released about Taylor’s epic career and the bits of wisdom he shares with his students.

“A vision requires real skill and craft,” said Taylor, who has proved it with his music and then some.

THE DOLL, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND BRAD BERTELLI

ild things have been said about Robert the Doll, which is saying something considering Robert is thought by some to be the most haunted artifact in the Florida Keys. The doll stands 40-inches tall and is stuffed with excelsior, or wood wool made of slivers cut from logs. The eyes are shoe buttons and the face, originally, was painted like a court jester.

Those colors have long since faded and all that is left of the façade is the doll’s spongy countenance.

The Otto family brought the doll to Key West. The Ottos were a prominent Key West family.

Thomas Osgood Otto was a thirdgeneration doctor. He married Minnie Elizabeth and they moved into their home at 534 Eaton St. in 1898. It is where Robert Eugene, the youngest of three boys and a girl, was born. The doll was given to Robert Eugene on Oct. 25, 1904 as a present for his fourth birthday.

Robert Eugene gave the doll his first name and kept the name Gene for himself. He also dressed Robert in the sailor suit he wears today. It is one that once belonged to Gene.

Robert has developed his own unique Florida Keys history, much of which has been passed around by barstool historians sipping rum

and telling tales. The doll has zero affiliation with Chucky and his successful Child’s Play film franchise.

The doll was not stitched together by an angry Bahamian servant.

Rather, the doll was a product of Steiff, the same company that produced the first teddy bear. Also, Robert did not attempt to suffocate a 10-year-old girl when he was still living at the Eaton Street address.

What is true is that Robert and Gene were inseparable. A room was built for Robert in the attic, complete with furniture and toys where he and Gene would spend hours playing. Gene would be heard having conversations that were accompanied by giggling.

When no one was in the room, the scratch and thud of objects being dragged across the attic floor could be heard. When Gene would be accused of boyhood mischief he would declare, “Robert did it!”

Today, Robert lives at the Fort East Martello Tower Museum where a wall is decorated with letters apologizing for taking his picture without asking permission. Sometimes, when you take his picture without asking first, people say Robert makes bad things happen. Just in case, ask his permission before taking his picture.

ocals are always looking for something new, and Yellowfin Bar and Grill at the Ocean’s Edge Resort and Marina, located on Stock Island, should be on the radar. “There wasn’t much Asian influence around, so I decided to mix Caribbean with Asian flavors,” said Wenmark. She also is excited to be able to source fresh fish locally. “We are looking into fishermen delivering right to our docks, but for now we get as much as we can locally. It’s different from northern fish; the flavors are much bolder.”

JIMMY BUFFETT ON HIS VERSION OF KEY WEST

n the south end of Duval Street, just before you hit the water, there used to be a restaurant flanked by red fringed umbrellas with a thatched tiki bar inside.

“Logun’s Lobster House” the sign read, and if you wandered into the seaside lot on the right night in the early ’70s, you might have heard a long-haired young Jimmy Buffett play with his band.

“The first gig we did as the Coral Reefer Band, we did at Logun’s Lobster House, and it was a dollar a ticket,” says Jimmy Buffett.

“David had a table on the front row, and at the table was Truman Capote, John Malcolm Brinnin, Dotson Rader, and a few other people.”

The “David” in question was David Wolkowsky, longtime friend and patron of Buffett’s. A few years before the Logun’s gig, in 1968, Wolkowsky opened the Pier House Resort at the north end of Duval Street.

The Miami Herald called the opening “the turning point in Key West’s transformation from washed-up military outpost to funky tourist destination.” Wolkowsky recognized the glitter of Key West under the grime of neglect and economic depression. And he recognized something special in Jimmy Buffett. “One of the great attributes of his was his tolerance of crazy people … me included,” he says.

Buffett and Wolkowsky first crossed paths when he was taken to Key West by Jerry Jeff Walker and his girlfriend, Teresa “Murphy” Sadler. He was living in Miami and struggling to make it. “I had just come from Nashville, and I didn’t have enough money to get my own apartment.” As strange as it sounds coming from the Margaritaville mogul of today, Buffett’s past is the one that lives on in his song lyrics: flip flops and pop tops and peanut butter. The trio rolled into Key West on the momentum of Walker’s reputation, having broken into the public consciousness with “Mr. Bojangles” in ’68.

“They took me to the Chart Room, and Jerry Jeff was already a force of nature in Key West in those days. That was my first time, and they kind of left me there.” After a few days of playing downtown, Buffett returned to Miami, but the island stayed with him.

“I loved it so much. After I did a few gigs back in Miami, I thought … I’m going back to Key West. I had odd jobs and could play the Chart Room, and then I met David, the owner.”

Buffett’s Key West story is a familiar refrain: I met X who introduced me to Y over on Z street and 20 more years slipped away. “I ran into my now brother-in-law Tom McGuane at the Chart Room. I ended up subletting his apartment at 123 Ann Street, and then I was a Key West resident.” Buffett didn’t immediately skyrocket to fame—it would be nearly 15 years before he and Sunshine Smith opened the Margaritaville Café on Duval Street—but he fell in love with the island.

Wolkowsky was already known for championing writers, quietly supporting eccentrics and artists who have become the defining set of Key West culture. Buffett says, “He was so supportive in every way, from letting writers he knew stay there, and putting up with our nonsense.”

Buffett describes the Pier House poolside scene: a band of charming (and multitalented) miscreants who were kept in line by Wolkowsky, playing the part of the bemused adult in the room. “I don’t think David ever paid me there, but he let me sing … and we’d just lay out by the pool and hang with the paying guests.” One of Buffett’s best friends, Larry “Groovy” Gray (it seems all of his friends had cool nicknames) ran a catamaran sailboat school on the beach at the Pier House. “Groovy always got along too, and any time David had problems with our crowd — if something had gone wrong or we stayed too late — I’ll never forget his voice, ‘Oh, Groovy,’ and that meant something had happened.” Buffett laughs. “I’m talking about real artistic support: you could lay around the pool and not get thrown out.”

He describes Key West not as a musician’s town then, but a literary town (one improvement, in his eyes, is the current Key West music scene, thanks to efforts like Charlie Bauer’s Songwriters Festival). “I was hanging with a literary crowd: Dotson Rader and McGuane and met [Jim] Harrison, and I was just a bar singer on the street.” The joke almost makes itself: Jimmy Buffett as “just a bar singer.” But he was then. “I had graduated from the university of the Chart Room and moved onto graduate work at Howie’s Lounge.” It was a time mythologized, romanticized, and riffed on by everyone from the guy at the package store to my grandmother. In ’70s Key West, literary giants, rock stars and pirates broke bread. Preferably Cuban bread.

Buffett is as mythologized as Key West.

Everyone has a spin on the legend, whether he’s a founding father or a prodigal son.

Rumors about him trying to cash his first big check at Ed Swift’s record store, or surprise shows at Margaritaville (that one’s true), or about him being Warren Buffett’s nephew

(he’s not—but he calls the billionaire “Uncle Warren” anyway) fly with the frequency of trade winds.

The Jimmy Buffett of today has grown up. He no longer resembles the long-haired, pot-smoking singer of the ’70s. The mogul-inflip-flops has recently negotiated a licensing deal for his “Coral Reefer” brand name to be applied to medical marijuana products.

According to Forbes, the Margaritaville lifestyle brand “has more than $4.8 billion in the development pipeline.” Now, it’s a white sport coat and a conglomeration. The icon of tropical escapism successfully turned what used to be a feeling into destinations around the world: bars, restaurants and even retirement homes. The Margaritaville website bills it as “a state of being” in addition to a state of mind.

But Jimmy Buffett’s voice sounds the same as it always has. That Mississippi-byway-of-New-Orleans twang, with laughter in nearly every word. When he reminisces, his voice takes the listener on a boat ride into the past. So which of the stories are true?

The Coral Reefer Band did used to rehearse in an old gas station on Fleming Street, where Tom Corcoran also had a leather hat shop. In Buffett’s “Louie’s Backyard Days” (he lived in the house next to the restaurant on Waddell Street), “one of Tennessee Williams’s boyfriends worked at Louie’s backyard, and on one or two occasions, I was hired to play a pool party at Tennessee’s.” He demurs, “Let’s just say it was an interesting gig, and he loved Hank Williams songs.”

David Wolkowsky did invite Buffett out to Ballast Key a number of times, under the auspices of being a regular party guest, and then would say, “Oh Jimmy, bring your guitar.” And while they “hemmed and hawed” about Buffett buying Ballast Key (Buffett eventually “came to his senses”), he did sell Buffett the building that is now Margaritaville ... with the stipulation that Wolkowsky got to keep the rooftop apartment at a fixed rate until his death. “I think he was 60 at the time,” Buffett laughs, “and so he had a fixed rate on the roof for as long as he lived.”

Wolkowsky died this year at 99.

Sometimes the charm of today’s Key West gets overlooked in favor of nostalgia.

Locals bemoan the congestion of tourists, the CVS that once was Fast Buck Freddie’s, and espouse the general “this was better when it was that” attitude. Does Buffett take credit—or responsibility—for this more commercialized version of paradise, rough edges smoothed and lawns manicured?

“I never thought it would be what it’s become, but I’m not ashamed of any part of it. I made some mistakes along the way, but today, it sure seems like an extension of what it was to us.” Buffett tells a story about filming “Tarpon,” the ’73 rogue fishing documentary for which Buffett wrote the music. “In ‘Tarpon,’” Buffett says, “they were interviewing Jim Harrison and he said, ‘Every place I’ve been to, they say I needed to be here 10 years ago.’”

“There’s a lot of people I know from those days who still live in the past,” Buffett says. “Because it was a wide-open town, still a Navy town to a degree, and it was also a primary location for the marijuana business. It was very casual, and it had that kind of pirate mentality.” Yet he attributes the enduring charm of Key West to its tolerance.

“Everyone had a place there. … New Orleans was the magic city of my youth. I played on Bourbon Street, and it has that same je ne sais quoi feel that you have about a place that’s tolerant.”

His voice does that thing where you can hear it drifting out the window. “Everyone has their version of Key West. I hope that people still have that. I still smell black beans and chicken cooking when I’m riding my bike around,” he says. “It’s much more gentrified, but it still has that authenticity. … I relish the past, but I don’t live in it.”

Everyone has a version of Jimmy Buffett, too. The one we want to keep preserved in time, with his Gulf Coast drawl and his dream of escape. Does Jimmy Buffett still dream of what’s next for Key West? This version seems to have his sights set on the rest of the world, rather than the original “Margaritaville.” Since Wolkowsky’s recent passing, the old rooftop apartment above the restaurant is vacant, and Buffett muses on plans for that. “In my fantasy world,” he says, “I wanted to have a great mambo club up there. I thought it has one of the best views, and I still have the rights to the roof. … If I can get some management, I’d like to keep my mambo fantasy.”

“I don’t spend a lot of time in Key West any more,” he says, “but I might fix it up and let it be mine until I leave the planet, and have it up there, kind of in David’s honor. I think I’m going to go back to Key West and take a look at it.” Until then, we can dance in the mambo club that only exists in Jimmy Buffett’s mind.

The event, nine years strong, brings in much-needed funding for Samuel’s House’s Mary Spottswood Women’s Center, a safe haven for women, and women with children, helping them create a new beginning. The center is a structured family atmosphere that provides training opportunities, job development, a 12-step program, and referrals to medical, dental and psychological care for women and their children in residence. Any woman in need throughout Monroe County is welcomed.

Meet some of the men who will be raising money for the center: ARTHUR CROCKER knows firsthand the importance of a women’s

center, as he spent time at one in Ohio when he was younger. Arthur is the manager at Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe, is very involved in the Key West theater scene, and has competed several times for Aqua Idol. He would like to thank his mom, who will be in attendance, for his long legs and other unmentionables that will have to be seen in person.

RICK GAGE will be gracing the stage with his presence again and is fond of raising money for the nonprofit.

This will be ALEXANDER PRESS’S first time on the stage.

For LARRY BLACKBURN, one crown is never enough. The reigning Fantasy Fest King is seeking to be the “king of paradise” at this year’s event; he also is on the Samuel’s House board of directors.

DEREK EPPERLY is a respected Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Knight & Gardner Realty. In his spare time, he volunteers for his son’s school, The Key West Preschool Co-op and cooks occasionally for Key West United Methodist Church. His hobbies include golfing, fishing, traveling and gourmet cooking.

JOHN TROVATO is the managing director of the Casa Marina Resort and the Reach Resort. He was honored this year by Samuel’s House as one of the men of integrity at its annual gala.

PAUL MURPHY is the 2017 King of Fantasy Fest and echoes Black-

burn’s sentiment – one crown is never enough. He can make a killer Bloody Mary while working at The Saint.

ABRAHAM “ABE” COX says he’s more of a sinner than a saint, but loves being the GM at The Saint Hotel on Eaton Street and is ready to bring some Texas twang to the stage.

DANTE HARPER will be tough to beat with his shirt off since he basically lives at his gym, Flex Key West. “I am honored to be part of this event on behalf of Samuel’s House,” he said. “I was raised by just my mother and am blessed to be in the presence of strong women every day.”

TOMMY RYAN is a retired New York 9/11 firefighter and entrenched in fundraising in the community across the board for local nonprofits.

VICTOR SALVOV works at Marriott Beachside and got his start raising money for Samuel’s House at this event, when he came out through the kitchen doors to strut his stuff.

DAVID FERRIER is the food and beverage director at The Reach.

He’s a certified diver, and loves playing catch with his Shiba Inu “Toby.”

DIAMOND DAVE is ready for a crown of his own. As reigning Duke of Fantasy Fest, he is ready to raise more money for local nonprofits, especially Samuel’s House.

ELVIN QUINONES serves up great

cocktails at The Saint and volunteers at Tropic Cinema. He loves cycling, motorcycle trips to the mainland, crossfit, his own version of dancing, and creating new adventures and good times.

CLAYTON LOPEZ is a Key West city commissioner and no stranger to the Samuel’s House stage.

This will be JUSTIN HARRIS’S first time on the stage. He is a local electrician ready to electrify those in attendance.

COACH MARK COLEMAN has been a physical education teacher at Sigsbee Charter School since moving to Key West, where he believes in encouraging every student through exercise and athletics. He’s also a coach, personal trainer, ironman triathlete, and proud father. When not working, he enjoys family time and the beautiful Key West water and wildlife.

n recent weeks, the contest for the state representative seat serving the Florida Keys has become heated. The ballot features the incumbent Republican Holly Raschein against political newcomer and Democratic challenger Steven Friedman.

Friedman’s Facebook channel — Social Florida Accountability Project — says Raschein “sides with corporate polluters.” In a mass email on Oct. 26, Friedman’s campaign manager Robert Becker wrote in the first sentence “… Rep. Holly Raschein (R-Big Sugar) must think we are dumb.”

It’s an unusual tone in a local race.

“I am trying not to focus on my opponent’s negativity. When you don’t have a record to stand on, that’s what you have to go to … which is unfortunate,” Raschein said.

In 2012, Raschein defeated Ian Whitney by 5 points, in 2014 she was unopposed, and in 2016 she bested Dan Horton by 15 points. In 2018, she’s seeking her final term as what’s called a senior legislator. Her opponent, Friedman, is a charter fishing guide from the Upper Keys.

In 2018, Raschein served on six committees and subcommittees, most notably as chair of the Natural Resources and Public Lands Subcommittee, and committee member of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Appropriations Committee.

In a year of tough choices — school safety funding among them — Raschein still secured $15 million for af-

fordable housing in the Florida Keys, almost $6 million for a new Emergency Operations Center and $10 million for the ongoing Stewardship Act with funds split between water projects (such as canal restoration) and land conservation acquisition.

Raschein, her husband who is a small business owner, and young son live in Key Largo. Prior to becoming a state legislator, she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida State University; she holds a master’s in public administration from Florida International University. She served as a legislative aide for then-Rep. Ron Saunders before assuming his seat. When she’s not legislating, she’s fulfilling a role as a very involved member of the community including fundraising for the hospital, attending Rotary, etc.

“This is a part-time job, but I treat it like a full-time job,” she said.

“My team and I sacrifice family time and other activities to travel to Tallahassee and around the district. I am present, I am accessible and I am open.` “If you tally up the last three years compared to other legislators from similar districts, our numbers are very high. That speaks to my leadership style and how hard I work to share the Keys message about our unique geography and the challenges we face. My job is twofold: to make sure we have a voice and get the resources back to plug them into useful projects like affordable housing or water quality, and also to serve our constituents.

We were elected first and foremost to help the people of the Keys.”

Matthew Weiner, producer of “Mad Men,” is the genius behind this new series, which tells the stories of people who believe they’re descendants of a Russian royal family murdered in 1918. Filmed on three different continents, each hour-long episode unfolds with unpredictability.

The acting is top-notch, with familiar faces Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Aaron Eckhart, Amanda Peet and Diane Lane, to name a few. Viewers will have to wait and see how all eight episodes of season 1 intertwine. New episodes air on Fridays, with the season finale Nov. 23.

COLOR | “THIS ANNOYING LIFE” It’s an adult coloring book, and normally we wouldn’t go near one of these things unless we were having a level 10 meltdown and ran out of booze … BUT this book is really clever. “This Annoying Life” by Oslo David nails the problems of the first world — squeaky new shoes, exploding smoothie blenders, lost eye contacts on an overly complicated tile floor and “no signal” on movie night. It even pokes fun at itself with some coloring jokes. It’s slightly calming to know that the rest of the world is just as irritated by the little things. Let’s be petty together.

LISTEN | ROBYN “HONEY” Just out on iTunes, Rolling Stone was quick to give the album 4.5 stars out of 5 and described it as “disco’s healing ecstasy.” Robyn mixes pop and club music with choruses and a relaxed beat. It’s modern, lyrical and bound to have an emotional connection. There are enthralling hits like “Missing U,” “Honey” and “Ever Again.”

What class has best prepared you for life after high school? My health class with Mr. Forbus has best prepared me for life after high school. Apart from learning things needed in the medical field, he taught me what characteristics it takes to be a good person and do good for others.

What advice would you give to underclassmen? I would tell underclassmen to be involved and not be afraid to show school spirit.

Go to the pep rallies, attend the games, join clubs. Just make all the memories you can.

What is your favorite social medium, why, and whom do you follow? My favorite social media is Snapchat because it allows everyone to stay connected with pictures and videos from events.

What do you want to be remembered for at Key West High School? For being a role model to underclassmen and my teammates.

What three things do you want to accomplish before your 10-year high school reunion? I would like to have graduated from a four-year university, be in a stable job doing what I love, and have a happy and healthy family.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I have yet to decide; a part of me wants to see what else is out there, but I love the close community the Keys have.

Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me … how important family and friends really are. The Keys are such a small circle where everyone knows everyone, it’s like we are one big family.
