File this under random Florida info: changing our clocks permanently to Daylight Saving Time was approved by the state legislature, 103–11 in the state House and 33–2 in the state Senate last March. Then Sen. Marco Rubio presented the Sunshine Protection Act to make Daylight Saving Time the norm throughout the country. Okay, so what happened? Does Florida change our clocks Nov. 4 or what? No, the state bill is conditional on the federal government being on board, so Gov. Rick Scott cannot change time with a wave of his signature. Florida could only move forward if the rest of the country does and right now the bill is somewhere lost in Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee waiting for approval. For now, the other states have time to catch up with Florida’s idea.

hile the winds from Hurricane Florence weren’t catastrophic, the amount of rain that has fallen since Sept. 14 on the Carolinas is. More than 40 inches of rain has fallen in some parts of the two states, and rivers have breached the banks. It marks a year and four days since Keys residents experienced something similar and they are finding a way to give back.

UPPER KEYS “The Friday after Hurricane Irma hit, a group of Rotarians arrived in the Keys from North Carolina with a double-packed semi truck,” said Don Horton, a member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club.

So, even before the storm touched the shores of the Carolinas, he and his Keys club were collecting goods to return the favor. And not just anything, either, the right stuff.

“They didn’t bring stuffed bunnies or yard sale clothes,” Horton said. “Those guys brought everything we needed — Clorox, work gloves, flashlights, some rope and some bungee cord. It was all those things we needed to dig out.”

Horton and the Upper Keys Rotary came up with a list and are storing donations in Mike Forster’s restaurant that is under renovation in Tavernier. On Monday, Sept. 24, Horton and his girlfriend Carla are taking off, towing a 22-foot trailer.

“A couple of the rivers are due to crest today and tomorrow, and parts of I-95 are still closed,” Horton said on Sept. 19. “We’re collecting a few extra things and will pack up the trailer this weekend.”

The two Rotary clubs are communicating with one another in an effort to get the goods exactly where they are needed.

MARATHON Marathon Councilman Steve Cook found a very personal way to give back. After Irma, a Marathon Station “Coastie” was a huge help to him and his wife, Sheila.

“Anthony ‘Izzy’ Iannizzaro basically put the exterior of my Marathon house back together after Irma,” Cook said. Cook made room for Izzy and family in his Georgia abode. And when the storm’s winds died down, he pre-cooked a bunch of chicken and ribs, vacuum sealed it, and sent them off.

“I couldn’t go with them, which just breaks my heart,” he said.

Iannizzaro and his wife both have family in Newport, North Carolina and they are moving to the area soon. Newport is a few miles inland, north of Wilmington.

“Their houses were flooded out, so we sent them with the food and some gear,” Cook said.

UTILITIES Both Keys Energy Services and Florida Keys Electric Cooperative mobilized crews late last week to send to the Carolinas.

KEYS sent five guys, and FKEC sent 8 linemen plus three bucket trucks, one digger truck, and accessories like trailers and pick ups.

FKEC posted a moving video of the caravan pulling out of the Upper Keys headquarters.

“I hope they get there and turn around and come back. I hope there is no work for them because hurricane damage is minimal,” said CEO Scott Newberry of FKEC. His words were prophetic.

Both crews staged in Jacksonville for a few days and have already returned.

“That’s what happens. We sent crews during Hurricane Matthew and Superstorm Sandy. They help us, and we help them,” said KEYS spokesperson Julio J. Torrado.

The Upper Keys Rotary Club is collecting donations to take to the Carolinas. They are being stored in Mike Forster’s building that is under renovation. CONTRIBUTED.

FREE FOR A DAY Keys History & Discovery Center joins Museum Day

eys History & Discovery Center will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday, Sept. 22, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based museums.

Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to access, equity and inclusion. More than 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event.

“It is our hope this special day brings new visitors,” said Executive Director Jill Miranda Baker, Keys History & Discovery Center preserves and shares the history of the Upper Keys community and explores the ecology of the region. In addition to permanent exhibits on subjects such as Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railway, Legends of the Line, and First People, the Discovery Center offers a lecture series, educating the public through presentations from a variety of expert speakers. The museum’s second floor features a state-of-the-art theater showing documentaries on topics like the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and Indian Key, as well as traveling exhibits, and the Jerry Wilkinson Research Library. The center, on the property of the Islander Resort, is open Wednesdays through Sundays, from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.

Museum Day tickets will be available at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on Sept. 22. NAVY BLIMP SHOT DOWN IN THE FLORIDA STRAITS BRAD BERTELLI

ot all ships float in the water. The U.S. Navy K-ships, otherwise known as blimps, floated through the air. While generally used for surveillance, these Navy blimps were armed with a .50-caliber machine gun and four depth charges that could be dropped from above. During World War II, blimps assigned to Navy blimp squadron ZP-21, operating out of NAS Richmond, Florida, patrolled the Florida Straits in search of German U-boats.

On July 18, 1943, U.S. Navy K-74 was on patrol over the Atlantic when it spied the German submarine U-134 at the surface. The U-boat was on course to intercept two merchant ships, a tanker and a freighter. Understanding the potential risk, Lieutenant Nelson Grills, pilot of K-74, gave orders to engage the submarine. The 50-caliber machine gun rained bullets down on the submarine. The submarine returned fire. The blimp attempted to drop its depth charges, but the bombs failed to release as machine gun fire from the submarine filled the blimp with holes and damaged her engines.

The exchange lasted about five minutes and ended with the blimp badly damaged and beginning to lose altitude. The pilot radioed a mayday call. It was a few minutes before midnight when the blimp began to settle into the Atlantic Ocean some 40 miles east of Upper Matecumbe Key. As the blimp’s car began to flood, the 10-man crew donned their life vests and scrambled to get out of the car and into the water. The blimp’s safety raft floated away in the Gulf Stream and the crew was left to tread water in the darkness.

After checking the car to make sure everyone had escaped, the pilot became separated from the rest of the crew, who managed to stay together in two groups. They were left adrift and at the mercy of the Gulf Stream’s currents. Help arrived when the men were spotted by a plane just before 8 o’clock in the morning. As rescue ships were led to the location of the crew of the K-74, sharks, too, began to arrive on the scene.

Moments before the arrival of the submarine chaser USS SC-657 and the destroyer USS Dahlgren, Petty Officer Isadore Stressel, the blimp’s bombardier, was attacked and killed by a shark. The rest of the men were rescued. The K-74 became the only K-class patrol airship to be shot down during World War II. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

Islamorada Village Council candidates on new planner direction It’s been a few weeks since Ty Harris was hired as Islamorada’s new village planning director, along with from two new senior planners, Hank Flores and Craig Southern. So the Weekly asked Islamorada Village Council candidates for seats 2 and 4: What is the first task you would ask the new planning director and two senior planners to tackle?

Eric Carlson I would like to see our planning department focus on identifying potential areas to develop affordable or workforce housing. I would hope that our council and the departments can develop tax incentive programs for land owners combined with public funding to make these projects for feasible.

Under Florida’s “red flag law,” the police can get judicial approval to confiscate, for up to a year, the firearms of persons deemed a danger to themselves or others. And, yet, many convicted murderers are discovered, after the fact, to have known mental instabilities.

Like for a fence, the village would outline the requirements and regulations, the applicant would sign it, showing they have read and understand the requirements, and agree that when inspected, if the fence is not built to those requirements, it will have to be altered or removed.

Somehow, we’ve got to make an arrangement to keep our staff, police officers, firemen and teachers here. Every time the council raises taxes it runs people out of town. We have to find a way to work on some housing that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Some permits are required by the state building code.

Those requirements can’t be changed. But why would you need a village permit to replace an existing garage door? Discussions are underway concerning permit requirements as many residents continue storm recovery.

It’s tragic it took so many mass shootings to finally get common sense laws passed in Tallahassee. We must do more. Florida ranks 51st (!) in mental health funding — that is dangerously unacceptable. One step to make mental healthcare an absolute priority would be to join the 33 other states that have expanded Medicaid.

WC Captain David Dipre is a guardian of natural resources — whether he’s apprehending a lobster poacher, protecting saltwater crocodiles or giving his 17-year-old daughter the keys to the car.

Growing up in middle class Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the US Army right out of high school, became a medic and was stationed at the Irwin Army Hospital at Fort Riley, Texas and the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. After his discharge he spent two more years in Europe running the USO Club, where he hosted steak-andlobster galas for military brass.

He landed in the Keys in 1993 and took a job as a dispatcher with Florida Marine Patrol. Shortly after the formation of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, he was deputized, and has spent the last two decades working all sorts of cases, from human trafficking and drug smuggling to hurricanes, theft and diving and boating accidents.

The FWC recently changed its position on crocodiles in the Keys.

What prompted the change? Mostly the fear generated by the public. People don’t know and don’t understand the realities of the croc and when people are concerned they take drastic actions that could harm the crocodiles.

Our main concern is to protect the saltwater crocodile species through education.

So what is the FWC’s protocol when a resident reports a saltwater croc in their neighborhood? FWC will educate the resident on the behaviors of crocs — assuring the resident the croc is more afraid of us than we are of it. In the rare instance when a croc needs to be removed, it’s trapped by a professional and taken to an area where the croc will be safe.

If the FWC has determined that the croc needs to be removed, what happens next? We will contact our trappers, who will assess the situation and determine whether it needs to be relocated.

In the event we do need to move it, a trapper will humanely capture the reptile and move it to an area where it will not be attacked or killed by another croc.

What’s the difference between the saltwater crocodiles of the Florida Keys and the alligators of the Everglades? They are similar in many ways, especially in appearance. However, the behavior of the croc is much more passive and docile than alligators. People should be more concerned about alligators than crocodiles.

Is it true that the Keys are being overrun with saltwater crocodiles and it’s no longer safe to swim in canals or let your kids into the yard unattended?

Absolutely not. Saltwater crocs are territorial. You may have one or two in an area, but that is all because they don’t allow the area to be overrun. They are not like iguanas. It is safe to swim in the canals and, in relation to crocs …. fire ants, no-see-ums, and child abductions are more serious threats to your child than crocs.

If a resident finds a crocodile on their property, are they allowed to use force to remove the animal, or should they try luring it away with food?

They are NOT allowed to use force and they are NOT allowed to lure it with food. It’s against the law and there could be state or federal charges that include fines and possible jail. They should call us — 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286) — and allow us to take appropriate action.

If you spot a crocodile close to your pet or children, what is the best course of action? Make a lot of noise. In 23 years I have never seen nor heard of a saltwater croc getting aggressive or assertive with a child.

Are residents allowed to legally hunt or trap saltwater crocodiles? No. Not in any way.

How many crocodile attacks are reported on an annual basis?

I believe there are about two reported attacks against small pets.

What courses of action should residents take to protect their family and pets from crocodiles?

Just stay with your pet if a crocodile is in the area.

If you are with them, the crocs will most likely stay away. If you feel your pet is threatened, you can call FWC and we will investigate.

If you could have lunch with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and where would you go? Abe Lincoln at Burdines because of their fish sandwich and French fries. I guarantee Abe has never had a fish sandwich anywhere close to Burdines and their fries are the best. I would ask a lot of questions in terms of how to fix the race relations.

You boast an impressive collection of costumes. What is your favorite and what occasion requires you to wear it? A composer for Halloween. Folks mistook me for a drag queen, but I was actually a composer from the late 1800s.

You are the frontman, keyboardist and sing vocals for the cop rock band In Pursuit. What does the future hold for the band? Lollapalooza? We are looking at opening for the Rolling Stones at one of their upcoming shows. I know Mick has been trying to get ahold of me. We have spoken a number of times and I know it’s going to happen. He’s just old and forgetful.

NICE, BOY. NICE, CROC. Crocodile attacks on people are very rare. Most are defensive warnings to stay away from nests.

Nesting season is May and June, and hatching occurs at the end of July and in August. They are considered docile by trappers, who often use only ropes to subdue the wild animals.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Folks always want to know about the difference between crocodiles and alligators. It’s simple: some will see you later, others after a while.

Seriously, the main difference between the two is that gators are just a ‘cold weather’ version of crocodiles: they can live in climates that would kill any crocodile. Gators are black in color so they can attract more light from the sun to heat themselves; crocs are never black.

Think of an alligator as a solar panel with teeth, whereas crocodiles are just teeth.

DOING WELL, THANKS The American crocodile is an endangered species success story. According to the FWC, since 1975 their numbers have increased from fewer than 300 to more than 1,500 adults.

Today, they are classified as a threatened species. The number of crocodile complaints has risen as a result of their recovery and the increasing number of people living and recreating in South Florida.

DINNER’S SERVED In the Keys, crocodiles eat fish and iguanas. They also munch on small mammals like raccoons and, unfortunately, they eye pets as food. Crocodiles are VERY attracted to the trimmings from anglers’ recent fishing trips. Rather than pushing the fish scraps into the canal next to the fillet station, just freeze them and put them out with the garbage until the crocs go in hunt of a better food source.

FORWARDING ADDRESS? Nope. Think of crocodiles as rock stars without a Twitter or Instagram account. And moving them across Florida Bay won’t help. If they want to come back, they will.

So, when professional trappers relocate crocodiles, they don’t advertise the new environs. Second, trappers try to find the crocs a BETTER place to stay, like a hotel upgrade, with a better habitat.

Third, they really are very shy and enjoy their privacy.

TOUGH and SMART Crocodiles are the ultimate survivors; scientists believe they have been around for about 200 million years ago. Put it this way: they have outlived the dinosaurs by 65 million years and even humans, their most worthy opponent, haven’t extinguished the species.

There are 23 crocodilian species, which include crocodiles, caimans, alligators and Gharials. There are only two saltwater crocs — the American Crocodile and the Australian Saltwater Crocodile.

Annual event takes almost 200 around the lighthouse

D

epending on how you count, this past weekend’s Swim for Alligator Lighthouse was either the fifth annual or sixth annual event. It was scheduled for 2017, but Hurricane Irma ruined those plans. This past weekend, almost 200 swimmers participated in the race founded by local artist “Lighthouse Larry,” who started the event to help preserve Alligator Light. About 100 swimmers swam the roughly 8-mile swim as solo competitors.

The swim began and ended at Amara Cay Resort, MM 80. The event attracts swimmers from around the world and also showcases the talent of our local mermaids and mermen.

Yoelvis Pedraza of Boulder, Colorado finished the whole course in under three hours — 2 hours, 55 minutes. Local teenager Zybo Marchetti, 17, finished in 4 hours and 40 minutes. “Lighthouse” Larry Herlth and his good friend, and co-founder, Rob Dixon also swam as solo competitors and finished side-by-side in about 5 hours, 30 minutes.

What is the dumbest rule at school?

The best? Not being able to wear sweatshirts from a college you were not accepted into is a frustrating rule. The best one has to be seniors being able to leave campus for lunch.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at ICS and why are they important to you? y the calculations of researchers at the University of Florida, Monroe County has lost 3.8 percent of its full-time residents in the last year, with Marathon taking the biggest hit.

The primary source of data gathered by University of Florida research demographer Rich Doty’s team of five is the change in active residential electrical connections.

“That’s the best source of data we have to estimate the change in occupied housing units,” Doty said. “The formulas are complicated, but the concept is pretty simple.”

The yearly study is done using data from the Florida Keys Electric Co-op and Keys Energy Service, which provide active account information annually to Doty.

The numbers are pretty finalized, he said, but even more solid data will be revealed after the 2020 census results.

“Between decennial censuses, these are estimates based on what we feel are very good reliable data, but there are still some assumptions in regard to changes in household size and occupancy,” he said.

Countywide, 2,949 people have left, the majority from unincorporated Monroe totaling 1,936. In incorporated Monroe, 1,013 residents moved.

In Islamorada, the population dropped by 336 residents, the study showed.

“The fact is, we lost a number of residences in three mobile home parks and a few conventional homes in the storm. I’m sure others moved for economic reasons,” said Islamorada Village Manager Seth Lawless.

The 2018 population totals are close to numbers from 2015 in all areas of the county.

“Those were good years, and I think the new numbers show we’re not having doomsdays like some folks suggested after the storm,” said county administrator Roman Gastesi. “People said we were going to lose our economy and 10,000 to 15,000 people were going to leave. It’s clear the economy is going to bounce back.”

He also mentioned the drastic loss in residents between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, which showed a population loss of about 8,000 people.

“The economy didn’t fall apart, and that was one of the worst economic downturns we’ve ever seen,” he said.

In Marathon, where 394 homes were destroyed by Irma according to county information, the population has declined by 6.2 percent, or 540 people.

Still, just one family leaving is too many, said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

“I’m very thankful it’s not more (than 540). I’m incredibly proud of our community and its tenacity and resilience following Irma, and myself like many others were encouraged to stay because of our community strength,” he said. “However, I’m looking forward to the census data to get a more accurate account.”

Key West lost a mere 88 people, not even half of 1 percent of its population of 24,509.

‘LIKE CHEWING TAFFY’ State’s 1,300 units issue sticky for BOCC

T

he tangled affordable housing web just got more tangled.

Monroe County commissioners were admittedly perplexed at their meeting in Key Largo on Sept. 19 about the state’s gift of 1,300 affordable housing allocations, 300 of which are allotted for the county to accept or deny.

“This is more complicated and seems to be getting a lot more complicated,” said Commissioner George Neugent.

Key West, Marathon and Islamorada have individually started the mandatory process of changing their comprehensive plans to accept 300 units each, with a combined 100 for Key Colony Beach and Layton. The county has not taken a formal stance on the 300 units yet.

There are two issues commissioners say make the proposition so complicated – what happens in 2023 when there is no more development allowed in the Keys and who will pay for the “taking” lawsuits that will result; and how to enforce the mandatory early evacuation clause included for tenants of the future units.

The reason for the commission’s reluctance is based on the uncertainty of what will happen in 2023, when the state will no longer issue building permits for the Keys. Come 2023, some property owners may have to settle for an affordable right in place of the market rate they may want.

Case law suggests that as long as there is some type of “right” associated with the property — whether affordable or market — property owners will not prevail in a “taking” lawsuit.

At Wednesday’s meeting, county attorney Bob Shillinger said, “I can’t say it any clearer; accepting the allocations means fewer takings cases.”

Commissioners also worry the floodgates have been opened for the state to hand down hundreds more units in the coming years, which could result in a “build out” of the Keys, further affecting quality of life.

“For me, it kind of puts all of our parcels on the table for development. The municipalities have already accepted it. Pandora’s box has already opened,” said Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

Assistant county administrator Christine Hurley said the state Department of Economic Opportunity has indicated enforcement of early evacuation is up to the local community.

“It appears deed restrictions would be put on the properties and a rental agreement would contain a separate disclosure that failure to abide could include severe penalties, including eviction,” she said.

Commissioner Sylvia Murphy said it is impossible to make people leave early in the event of a hurricane.

“There is no way you are going to tell people when they’re going to leave, how they’re going to leave, or why. You cannot enforce it, and therefore why do it?” she said.

“This is like chewing taffy,” said Mayor David Rice. “It gets bigger and bigger the more you chew.”

After nearly two hours of discussion, commissioners directed staff to dig deeper into the details of accepting the units for further discussion at a later date.

eef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) will hold its 5th annual REEF Fest with a four-day celebration of marine conservation and education in the Florida Keys. This year’s focus will be the 25 years of volunteer fish surveys that stretch over 10 different regions worldwide and have yielded nearly 10 million records available to scientists and researchers. About 400 participants are expected for the various activities.

The festivities will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. with a “Welcome Sunset Picnic” at the Murray Nelson Government Center, followed by a presentation on the state of the Goliath Grouper by Christopher C. Koenig, a marine research ecologist at Florida State University.

The presentations will continue on Friday afternoon with talks about “Where to find 100 or more fish,” by local, longtime REEF volunteers Carlos and Allison Estape; a discussion of the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem by Dr. Martin Grosell; and a call to advocacy for the protection and conservation of coral reefs, by Andy Bruckner.

Saturday afternoon talks include an update on lionfish research by REEF’s invasive species program coordinator, Alli Candelmo; a presentation on fish behavior and connections by Caroly Shumway, REEF’s new executive director;

and an account of the effects of nitrogen enrichment on coral reefs,

by Brian Lapointe.

A number of dive and snorkel activities have been scheduled for both Friday and Saturday morning.

Amoray Dive Resort at MM 104.3, Quiescence Diving Services at MM 103.7, and Key Dives at MM 79.9 all offer dedicated REEF Fest charters.

Learn about intense dives in a “One Atmosphere Diving Suit” to explore planetary biodiversity and the various species that can survive at 2,000 feet and beyond.

The Dive into History Weekend kicks off with a presentation by Joe Dituri on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. He will discuss technical and saturation diving equipment requirements, gas mixtures, and what it was like to be at 1,947 feet. Dituri also will highlight various Association of Marine Exploration missions, which include identifying new creatures discovered on his deepest dives. Visitors also will hear about the similarities between deep ocean and space exploration based on Dituri’s experience on the Mars Desert Research Station, Mission 192.

The morning presentation will be followed by a double-dip dive on the Spiegel Grove Artificial Reef. Divers will meet at Florida Keys Dive Center for check-in at 12:30pm for an afternoon dive. During the dive, participants are encouraged to participate in Citizen Science by helping with a voluntary fish survey provided by REEF. The fee for the all-day event is $80 and includes presentation, member-for-a-day pass to the Museum, event T-shirt, and dive trip (additional gear rental costs may apply). Museum members pay $70.

The presentation alone is $25 for non-members and includes event t-shirt; free for Museum members.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, Sunday offers two guided tours of the museum at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The cost for the tour is $12, free to museum members.

f there was a Cheers bar in the Florida Keys, it would be The Catch, because let’s be real – sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.

At least that’s the vibe at the horseshoe-shaped bar and adjoining dining room. They’re not exactly Sam and Diane, but bartender Jim Horan and co-owner Paige Prouty make lunch just as entertaining, and Prouty greets patrons like she’s known them for years.

Oh, and the food at The Catch, MM 102 oceanside, is as fresh as can be found in the Florida Keys.

For starters, feast on tender tuna poke piled high on a bed of guacamole and served with deep-fried wonton points made in-house.

Get a load of the tuna nachos. Sesameseared rare tuna tops larger fried wontons along with seaweed and ginger, drizzled with a savory wasabi sauce and served with sweet soy/sesame sauce for dipping. It’s a melt-in-your-mouth combo.

Try the tacos, which are anything but basic. Three come with your choice of fish or conch, blackened or grilled, tucked into a flour tortilla with cheese, pico de gallo, homemade, tangy Sriracha sauce and avocado. It’s a flavor combination to remember, served with a side of cucumber salad.

Popular dinner entrees include fresh, locally caught fish prepared any way you like, and the seafood platter – golden fried fresh fish, clam strips, scallops and shrimp served with homemade cocktail and tartar sauces.

Prime rib on Friday nights brings the masses, and there are live bands every weekend night.

Co-owners Prouty and Cathy Gahagen have been in the Keys nearly three decades each, both cutting their teeth in the restaurant industry at Upper Keys eateries like Mrs. Mac’s, The Caribbean Club and Hobo’s Cafe.

“We tossed it back and forth with each other, and just went for it in 2013,” Prouty said.

Since then, The Catch has reeled in the locals, who consistently rave about the Keys-classic joint.

It’s open from Monday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with daily specials and happy hour Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

TURNING CHANGE INTO STRENGTH Artist ‘had to live a new life’

usi Trottnow lives life to the fullest each day, doing what she loves best, creating art. In 2010, after receiving startling news that she had stage two breast cancer, she knew things were about to change, and turned her year-long journey of treatment, tests and doctor appointments, into a source of inner strength.

“A diagnosis of remission and my own personal introspection led me to the conclusion that I had to live a new life,” she said. After 22 years in Lake Tahoe, Susi and her husband Rich decided to leave the mountainous landscape behind, and move to the sunny, tropical Keys. The idea of living in paradise not only captivated their hearts, it also opened the door for Susi to explore new things about herself.

A chance meeting with the owner of Morada Way Clay, located in Islamorada’s Morada Way Arts & Cultural District, inspired Susi to take classes. It wasn’t long before she developed a passion for working with clay. It was a time of healing through creativity and self discovery. One of the first pieces she created was a little porcelain clay fish with awareness ribbon tails called “Hopefish.” She thought it would be a great way to offer an amazing gift made from the hands of a survivor for those who need a little hope. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society.

For several years, Susi was the coordinator of Morada Way’s monthly Artwalk, a local event where artists, musicians and foodies come together for several hours of fun, shopping and entertainment.

Since then, she has joined Our Place in Paradise and co-owns a gallery, where she spends a great deal of time working on her art, and creating new and unique pieces.

“Using porcelain clay, I create art that is a true reflection of my environment as well as the amazing gift Mother Nature provides as the ultimate example,” she said. Her very popular “Paradise” pendants are tiny painted snapshots of our amazing blue waters .

Susi prefers to use authentic objects collected from nature instead of pre-made molds. Tiny starfish, shells and tropical scenes are so detailed, they practically come to life. Her latest creations are a collection of whimsical reef pendants, bracelets and earrings. The intricate details are colorful, wearable art that captures the essence of the Keys.

Susi likes to stay involved with the community and participates each year in Art Under the Oaks, Island Fest, Artwalk, and is proud to be one of the participating artists at this year’s Purple Pumpkin Gala for Rett syndrome. When Susi is not working, she enjoys boating, or just kicking back with her husband Rich, a local Realtor, and enjoying their new life in paradise.

“The House With a Clock in its Walls” Funny man Jack Black is back in the kid friendly comedy, “The House With a Clock in its Walls,” in theaters Friday, Sept. 21. Based on the 1973 mystery novel written by John Bellairs, it follows the trip of 10-year-old orphan Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), sent to live with his zany uncle Jonathan (Black) in an old house in Michigan with a mysterious tick-tock noise. Set in 1955, Lewis discovers his uncle and strange neighbor Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett) have magical powers, and he maneuvers the town’s supernatural world, which then turns dangerous.
