‘LIKE CHEWING TAFFY’ State’s 1,300 units issue sticky for BOCC

T

he tangled affordable housing web just got more tangled.

Monroe County commissioners were admittedly perplexed at their meeting in Key Largo on Sept. 19 about the state’s gift of 1,300 affordable housing allocations, 300 of which are allotted for the county to accept or deny.

“This is more complicated and seems to be getting a lot more complicated,” said Commissioner George Neugent.

Key West, Marathon and Islamorada have individually started the mandatory process of changing their comprehensive plans to accept 300 units each, with a combined 100 for Key Colony Beach and Layton. The county has not taken a formal stance on the 300 units yet.

There are two issues commissioners say make the proposition so complicated – what happens in 2023 when there is no more development allowed in the Keys and who will pay for the “taking” lawsuits that will result; and how to enforce the mandatory early evacuation clause included for tenants of the future units.

The reason for the commission’s reluctance is based on the uncertainty of what will happen in 2023, when the state will no longer issue building permits for the Keys. Come 2023, some property owners may have to settle for an affordable right in place of the market rate they may want.

Case law suggests that as long as there is some type of “right” associated with the property — whether affordable or market — property owners will not prevail in a “taking” lawsuit.

At Wednesday’s meeting, county attorney Bob Shillinger said, “I can’t say it any clearer; accepting the allocations means fewer takings cases.”

Commissioners also worry the floodgates have been opened for the state to hand down hundreds more units in the coming years, which could result in a “build out” of the Keys, further affecting quality of life.

“For me, it kind of puts all of our parcels on the table for development. The municipalities have already accepted it. Pandora’s box has already opened,” said Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

Assistant county administrator Christine Hurley said the state Department of Economic Opportunity has indicated enforcement of early evacuation is up to the local community.

“It appears deed restrictions would be put on the properties and a rental agreement would contain a separate disclosure that failure to abide could include severe penalties, including eviction,” she said.

Commissioner Sylvia Murphy said it is impossible to make people leave early in the event of a hurricane.

“There is no way you are going to tell people when they’re going to leave, how they’re going to leave, or why. You cannot enforce it, and therefore why do it?” she said.

“This is like chewing taffy,” said Mayor David Rice. “It gets bigger and bigger the more you chew.”

After nearly two hours of discussion, commissioners directed staff to dig deeper into the details of accepting the units for further discussion at a later date.

cupied housing units,” Doty said. “The formulas are complicated, but the concept is pretty simple.”

The yearly study is done using data from the Florida Keys Electric Co-op and Keys Energy Service, which provide active account information annually to Doty.

The numbers are pretty finalized, he said, but even more solid data will be revealed after the 2020 census results.

“Between decennial censuses, these are estimates based on what we feel are very good reliable data, but there are still some assumptions in regard to changes in household size and occupancy,” he said.

In Marathon, where 394 homes were destroyed by Irma according to county information, the population has declined by 6.2 percent, or 540 people.

Still, just one family leaving is too many, said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

Countywide, 2,949 people have left, the majority from unincorporated Monroe totaling 1,936. In incorporated Monroe, 1,013 residents moved.

In Islamorada, the population dropped by 336 residents, the study showed.

“The fact is, we lost a number of residences in three mobile home parks and a few conventional homes in the storm. I’m sure others moved for economic reasons,” said Village Manager Seth Lawless.

Key West lost a mere 88 people, not even half of 1 percent of its population of 24,509.

The 2018 population totals are close to numbers from 2015 in all areas of the county.

“Those were good years, and I think the new numbers show we’re not having doomsdays like some folks suggested after the storm,” said county administrator Roman Gastesi. “People said we were going to lose our economy and 10,000 to 15,000 people were going to leave. It’s clear the economy is going to bounce back.”

He also mentioned the drastic loss in residents between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, which showed a population loss of about 8,000 people.

“The economy didn’t fall apart, and that was one of the worst economic downturns we’ve ever seen,” he said.

NAVY BLIMP SHOT DOWN IN THE FLORIDA STRAITS BRAD BERTELLI

ot all ships float in the water. The U.S. Navy K-ships, otherwise known as blimps, floated through the air. While generally used for surveillance, these Navy blimps were armed with a .50-caliber machine gun and four depth charges that could be dropped from above. During World War II, blimps assigned to Navy blimp squadron ZP-21, operating out of NAS Richmond, Florida, patrolled the Florida Straits in search of German U-boats.

On July 18, 1943, U.S. Navy K-74 was on patrol over the Atlantic when it spied the German submarine U-134 at the surface. The U-boat was on course to intercept two merchant ships, a tanker and a freighter. Understanding the potential risk, Lieutenant Nelson Grills, pilot of K-74, gave orders to engage the submarine. The 50-caliber machine gun rained bullets down on the submarine. The submarine returned fire. The blimp attempted to drop its depth charges, but the bombs failed to release as machine gun fire from the submarine filled the blimp with holes and damaged her engines.

The exchange lasted about five minutes and ended with the blimp badly damaged and beginning to lose altitude. The pilot radioed a mayday call. It was a few minutes before midnight when the blimp began to settle into the Atlantic Ocean some 40 miles east of Upper Matecumbe Key. As the blimp’s car began to flood, the 10-man crew donned their life vests and scrambled to get out of the car and into the water. The blimp’s safety raft floated away in the Gulf Stream and the crew was left to tread water in the darkness.

After checking the car to make sure everyone had escaped, the pilot became separated from the rest of the crew, who managed to stay together in two groups. They were left adrift and at the mercy of the Gulf Stream’s currents. Help arrived when the men were spotted by a plane just before 8 o’clock in the morning. As rescue ships were led to the location of the crew of the K-74, sharks, too, began to arrive on the scene.

Moments before the arrival of the submarine chaser USS SC-657 and the destroyer USS Dahlgren, Petty Officer Isadore Stressel, the blimp’s bombardier, was attacked and killed by a shark. The rest of the men were rescued. The K-74 became the only K-class patrol airship to be shot down during World War II. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

n Aug. 11, longtime Marathon resident Larry Shaffer lost his life in a traffic accident on Overseas Highway as he was turning out of Tarpon Harbor. Even though the crash did not occur at the intersection of Aviation Boulevard and U.S.1, but just west of it, it was a prompt to try to make better sense of that very congested stretch of road.

Many local residents have long believed that only a traffic light could make the intersection of U.S.1 and Aviation Boulevard safe.

“I went into the discussion thinking we needed a new traffic light,” said Marathon Councilman John Bartus, who discussed the issue at a recent council meeting, “but I think we have something better in the works.”

Sheriff Rick Ramsay met with three state Department of Transportation traffic engineers on Sept. 18. Together, they think they have a four-point plan that doesn’t require a traffic light.

“There are already six traffic lights in Marathon,” Ramsay said. “A traffic light causes crashes, stalls traffic, increases evacuation times and increases speeding and aggressive driving.

If every traffic light puts you further behind schedule, people start driving more aggressively.”

Ramsay also noted the nature of the traffic in that area. Certainly, there are residents exiting the neighborhood behind the airport. But there’s also a lot of trailered boat traffic — either leaving the boat ramp on Harbor Drive, or making use of good Rec-90 gas sold

by the Valero gas station across the highway, kitty corner to Aviation Boulevard. The long wheel-base of a trailer behind a vehicle makes the turns even more challenging, traffic notwithstanding.

Here’s what’s being planned: • Add an extra turning lane exiting Aviation Boulevard onto U.S.1. Right now, the traffic stacks up cars waiting to get onto the highway because those making a left-hand turn must wait until at least three lanes of traffic are clear. If the plan is approved, there will be separate left- and righthand turn lanes for traffic leaving the neighborhood and merging onto U.S.1.

• Add an extra southbound turning lane on U.S.1 to enter Aviation Boulevard. Rather than having to take the corner on two wheels, motorists will be able to slow down in the southbound turning lane and enter the neighborhood streets at a moderate pace.

• Shorten the concrete median on U.S.1 at the west end by 20 feet.

That will allow motorists making a left hand turn to get all the way into the extra space (no bumpers hanging out into opposing traffic) and look for a chance to merge.

• Re-shape the concrete median on U.S.1 at the east end. A thinner median makes it easier for long wheelbase vehicles and trailers to exit the Valero gas station and turn across the highway headed south.

“I think we should have the drawings from FDOT in about two weeks,” Ramsay said.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS GALORE It seems like a new affordable housing project is always in the works in the Middle Keys. There are several in the planning process and shovel-ready sites are ready for construction (see pages 8-9).

So the Weekly asked Marathon City Council candidates, who have a significant role in approving these projects:

What is your favorite affordable housing project — completed or planned — in the Middle Keys?

JOHN KISSICK I like the one that the council just passed this last Tuesday. It is the Boat Works project by 39th Street. They are converting the marina into a mixed market rate and affordable housing project. A three-bedroom unit will cost $1,500 a month. That is affordable. It will be nice to see a project happen in that space.

MARK SENMARTIN Without a doubt, the St. Columba Church project at the west end of town. It is an-18 unit complex. The nonprofit ownership allows the rents to be $500-$1,500, just enough to support and maintain itself.

Smaller projects have more flexibility on what they have to charge for rents to succeed.

LUIS GONZALEZ I’m not going to pick and choose which project is the best because I feel they’re all being built to meet the needs of our current workforce and affordable housing crisis. But if I have to select an organization, it would have to be Habitat for Humanity because it requires sweat equity, which leads to home ownership.

GEORGE NEUGENT Many affordable projects in Middle Keys deserve my choice of favorite, however, the tie breaker, doing it because it’s the right thing to do and providing housing for your own business need: Knight’s Key & Overseas. Respectfully, one is affordable workforce rental, the other affordable home-ownership. Thank you to the Singhs.

STATE REP., DISTRICT 120 Under Florida’s “red flag law,” the police can get judicial approval to confiscate, for up to a year, the firearms of persons deemed a danger to themselves or others. And, yet, many convicted murderers are discovered, after the fact, to have known mental instabilities.

What more effective obstacles can be put in place to keep weapons out of their hands?

Steve Friedman (D) As a gun owner, I fully support the new “red flag law” and raising the age to 21 for gun purchases. It’s tragic it took so many mass shootings to finally get common sense laws passed in Tallahassee. We must do more. Florida ranks 51st (!) in mental health funding — that is dangerously unacceptable. One step to make mental healthcare an absolute priority would be to join the 33 other states that have expanded Medicaid.

Holly Raschein* (R) Risk protection orders were an important policy change to help law enforcement better protect public safety, but I want the legislature to look at universal background check requirements on all sales of weapons, public and private, in the coming session. There are definitely challenges in implementation and governance, but we must meet those if it will help keep a single weapon out of the hands of mentally ill persons. noop Dogg did it, Matthew McConaughey most likely will, but Jimmy Buffett? The Keys’ Jimmy Buffett? Yes, the man who turned a cheeseburger in paradise into a billiondollar business has a new “joint” venture. Buffett has struck a licensing deal with the medical marijuana giant Surterra Wellness to develop, market and merchandise medical marijuana products under the brand Coral Reefer.

Coral Reefer, the longtime name of his band and parent company, almost was too good a fit for the devil’s lettuce. Profit-loving Buffett saw the perfect opportunity and is cashing in on the future of marijuana products. Willie Nelson already did, of course, and saw $30 million in profits

by January 2018.

Buffett chose to partner with Surterra Wellness, founded in 2014, one of the fastest growing and leading medical cannabis companies in the U.S. Surterra also has one of the few marijuana licenses in Florida and plans to launch products in 2019.

In Surterra’s press release on Sept. 11 about the deal, Buffett said, “Finally, ‘the time has come,’ as the Walrus said.

That time being the long overdue recognition of the numerous healing properties of cannabis. I have

followed and studied with keen intensity the recent evolvement of the medical marijuana story and the path towards the simple common-sense conclusion that cannabis is good medicine and should be made available to all who need it.” Buffett also was a large supporter of the medical marijuana bill being passed in Florida before the deal.

A symbol of paradise music, beach vibes and umbrella drinks, it feels fitting for Buffett to add the Caribbean cabbage to the Margaritaville lifestyle brand. But will it go without a few silly stoner jokes? Not likely.

It begs the reference to the Keys’ own Jimmy Johnson and his endorsement for Extenze, a penile enhancement pill. When he proudly hitched his Johnson name to small penises everywhere, the internet sacked him, to say the least. So will Parrotheads bogart that joint or stick to nibblin' on sponge cake and watchin' the sun bake? So far, being wasted away in Margaritaville has paid off big-time for Buffett, with products like tequila, rums and Landshark beer, so most likely, a “coral” reefer will too.

But really, didn’t everyone think the Doobie Brothers would be first on board?

PLANS AFOOT TO DEVELOP OLD HABITAT SITE INTO TEMPORARY, SIMPLE ACCOMMODATIONS

T

he Florida Keys missed out on thousands of volunteer hours after Hurricane Irma hit the Keys. While there were many offers of help, volunteers either had no place to stay as many hotels were offline, or had to arrive fully funded and able to pay the $200-a-night rate. Even in cases where hotels were open, it was hard to balance the need for volunteers with the need to bring the economy back up to speed with tourism dollars.

The plans for the “Volunteer Village” on Big Pine Key could alleviate some of that pressure.

“Really we’re six to nine months too late,” said Monroe County Commissioner George Nugent, “but we’re finally getting it done.”

Monroe County signed a twoyear lease with the Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group — at $10 a year — to develop the former site of the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store on Big Pine Key. (The building was leveled after the hurricane, but structural issues closed the store some time ago.)

The plan is to build four pods, capable of housing 12 to 16 volunteers in each. The pods would be raised out of the flood zone, with a free-standing roof to shade the housing. There would be a shared common area, possibly outdoor

kitchens, and other facilities to make the facility self-reliant. It would operate like a revolving door — groups would arrive for a week or two to stay and work, to be replaced by a fresh set of volunteers.

Neils Hubbell, a semi-retired builder out of Key West, is helping to draw up the plans that include honest-to-God shipping containers.

“I’ve done a little research and I think I can get a 20-foot shipping container for about $1,800. Basically we divide them in half to create two 10-foot by 10-foot sleeping areas that can accommodate two cots. We cut a hole in one side for the door, and the other side for a window and put an a/c unit on top,” Hubbell said.

The Volunteer Village would be operated by the Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group. Headed by Michelle Luckett, it’s basically an organized leadership group to help coordinate the efforts of nonprofits, faith-based and social service agencies providing disaster assistance in Monroe County.

“We are the point of the spear,” Luckett said of the Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group, “who gets all the help marching in the same direction.”

She said her agency can coordi-

nate the efforts of the others — one with funds for roofing supplies and another with volunteer roofers, for example. She said the agency can stand up in a disaster, and possibly go dormant during times when it’s not needed.

So far, she has secured funding for the site’s infrastructure — electric, water and sewer installations — from the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Network and a Keys nonprofit which chooses to remain anonymous. The Florida Conference of United Methodist Church has pledged $100,000 toward the construction of the first pod. Luckett estimates the entire build will cost about $500,000.

“This would not have been possible without the partnership of Monroe County who leased the land,” said Luckett.

She said the need is long-term: “Realistically, it will take us two more years to recover from Hurricane Irma. And who knows what’s needed after that? Will there be another storm? Or a group of Habitat for Humanity volunteers who need a place to stay while they build affordable housing?”

She said the volunteer village could exist in perpetuity and even become a part of the volunteer tourism economy of the Florida Keys. In the event of another

storm, it could be used for staging or mobile offices as well.

“The value of a volunteer is so significant,” said Stephanie Kaple, director of the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition. “Keys residents are all working. We may want to go out and volunteer every weekend but other things get in the way — we have jobs, and we’re parents.

We need to take advantage of those who have time, and the skills to help us recover while keeping our hotels open for the muchneeded tourists.”

The concept of a volunteer village is cutting-edge, but one Neugent said was glaringly obvious even before Hurricane Irma hit.

He said the property on Big Pine Key was specifically acquired for the purpose of hurricane recovery many years ago.

“Bill Lowey and I brought this idea forward after Hurricane Wilma in 2005,” Neugent said, “when we knew we at least needed warehouse space.” Neugent said he would like to see a volunteer village on both sides of the 7 Mile Bridge, plus auxiliary sites next to churches or other civic organizations with infrastructure to support trailers for emergency volunteers.

hile the winds from Hurricane Florence weren’t catastrophic, the amount of rain that has fallen since Sept. 14 on the Carolinas is. More than 40 inches of rain has fallen in some parts of the two states, and rivers have breached the banks. It marks a year and four days since Keys residents experienced something similar and they are finding a way to give back.

UPPER KEYS “The Friday after Hurricane Irma hit, a group of Rotarians arrived in the Keys from North Carolina with a double-packed semi truck,” said Don Horton, a member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club.

So, even before the storm touched the shores of the Carolinas, he and his Keys club were collecting goods to return the favor.

And not just anything, either, the right stuff.

“They didn’t bring stuffed bunnies or yard sale clothes,” Horton said. “Those guys brought everything we needed — Clorox, work gloves, flashlights, some rope and some bungee cord. It was all those things we needed to dig out.”

Horton and the Upper Keys Rotary came up with a list and are storing donations in Mike Forster’s restaurant that is under renovation in Tavernier. On Monday, Sept. 24, Horton and his girlfriend Carla are taking off, towing a 22-foot trailer.

IT WASN’T THE WIND, IT WAS THE RAIN. IT WASN’T AN OBLIGATION, BUT A CHOICE. “A couple of the rivers are due to crest today and tomorrow, and parts of I-95 are still closed,” Horton said on Sept. 19. “We’re collecting a few extra things and will pack up the trailer this weekend.”

The two Rotary clubs are communicating with one another in an effort to get the goods exactly where they are needed.

Miletti has already filled one gap — a child needed a specific type of formula, used in conjunction with a feeding tube.

“One of my friends in the Kindness 365 Network not only found it, but got a supply that will last for months,” Miletti said.

The national news has reported the North Carolina farming industry has lost millions of animals. It’s estimated that about 3 million chickens, and 5,500 pigs have perished in the floodwaters.

MARATHON Marathon Councilman Steve Cook found a very personal way to give back. After Irma, a Marathon Station “Coastie” was a huge help to him and his wife, Sheila.

“Anthony ‘Izzy’ Iannizzaro basically put the exterior of my Marathon house back together after Irma,” Cook said. Cook made room for Izzy and family in his Georgia abode. And when the storm’s winds died down, he pre-cooked a bunch of chicken and ribs, vacuum sealed it, and sent them off.

“I couldn’t go with them, which just breaks my heart,” he said.

Iannizzaro and his wife both have family in Newport, North Carolina and they are moving to the area soon. Newport is a few miles inland, north of Wilmington.

“Their houses were flooded out, so we sent them with the food and some gear,” Cook said.

UTILITIES Both Keys Energy Services and Florida Keys Electric Cooperative mobilized crews late last week to send to the Carolinas. KEYS sent five guys, and FKEC sent 8 linemen plus three bucket trucks, one digger truck, and accessories like trailers and pick ups.

FKEC posted a moving video of the caravan pulling out of the Upper Keys headquarters.

“I hope they get there and turn around and come back. I hope there is no work for them because hurricane damage is minimal,” said CEO Scott Newberry of FKEC. His words were prophetic. Both crews staged in Jacksonville for a few days and have already returned.

“That’s what happens. We sent crews during Hurricane Matthew and Superstorm Sandy. They help us, and we help them,” said KEYS spokesperson Julio J. Torrado.

BIG PINE KEY Lisa Miletti — the woman who cooked every single day on Big Pine Key for months after Irma, distributing the meals for free — left Sept. 18 for the Carolinas. Her advance team landed in Swansboro, North Carolina to set up shop and begin the giving. The town is located on the coast, just north of Wilmington.

“They took enough food for a couple of days and started cooking right away,” Miletti said. “Swansboro is a real blue-collar community with farms. They are taking a lot of rain.”

Linemen Scott Meiner, Travis White, Dustin Ratza, Dale Ratza, Scott Lafreniere, Dave Ragland, Juan Castano and Billy Goodwin were ready to assist Brunswick Electric Membership Cooperation with Hurricane Florence Restoration in the Carolinas. Fortunately, their services were not required and they are already home.

SWIM TO THE LIGHT

This past weekend, almost 200 swimmers participated in the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse founded by Islamorada artist “Lighthouse Larry,” who started the event in 2013 to help preserve Alligator Light located roughly 4 miles offshore. The race started from Amara Cay, circled the light, and ended at the same spot. Notable finishes by locals include the Hot Wet Mess team of Sarah Maschal, formerly of Big Pine Key, and Brittany Burtner of Ramrod Key, who finished in 4 hours, 58 minutes. The Sea Cucumbers — Brandi Card of Marathon and the Weekly’s Kristen Livengood of Big Pine Key — completed the course in 5 hours, 29 minutes. CROC TALK CAPT. DIPRE DISPELS MYTHS, RUMORS JASON KOLER

WC Captain David Dipre is a guardian of natural resources — whether he’s apprehending a lobster poacher, protecting saltwater crocodiles or giving his 17-year-old daughter the keys to the car.

Growing up in middle class Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the US Army right out of high school, became a medic and was stationed at the Irwin Army Hospital at Fort Riley, Texas and the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. After his discharge he spent two more years in Europe running the USO Club, where he hosted steak-andlobster galas for military brass.

He landed in the Keys in 1993 and took a job as a dispatcher with Florida Marine Patrol. Shortly after the formation of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, he was deputized, and has spent the last two decades working all sorts of cases, from human trafficking and drug smuggling to hurricanes, theft and diving and boating accidents.

Dipre and his wife, Kim, live in Marathon with their daughter, who attends Marathon High School.

The FWC recently changed its position on crocodiles in the Keys.

What prompted the change? Mostly the fear generated by the public. People don’t know and don’t understand the realities of the croc and when people are concerned they take drastic actions that could harm the crocodiles.

Our main concern is to protect the saltwater crocodile species through education.

So what is the FWC’s protocol when a resident reports a saltwater croc in their neighborhood? FWC will educate the resident on the behaviors of crocs — assuring the resident the croc is more afraid of us than we are of it. In the rare instance when a croc needs to be removed, it’s trapped by a professional and taken to an area where the croc will be safe.

If the FWC has determined that the croc needs to be removed, what happens next? We will contact our trappers, who will assess the situation and determine whether it needs to be relocated.

In the event we do need to move it, a trapper will humanely capture the reptile and move it to an area where it will not be attacked or killed by another croc.

What’s the difference between the saltwater crocodiles of the Florida Keys and the alligators of the Everglades? They are similar in many ways, especially in appearance. However, the behavior of the croc is much more passive and docile than alligators. People should be more concerned about alligators than crocodiles.

Is it true that the Keys are being overrun with saltwater crocodiles and it’s no longer safe to swim in canals or let your kids into the yard unattended?

Absolutely not. Saltwater crocs are territorial. You may have one or two in an area, but that is all because they don’t allow the area to be overrun. They are not like iguanas. It is safe to swim in the canals and, in relation to crocs …. fire ants, no-see-ums, and child abductions are more serious threats to your child than crocs.

If a resident finds a crocodile on their property, are they allowed to use force to remove the animal, or should they try luring it away with food?

They are NOT allowed to use force and they are NOT allowed to lure it with food. It’s against the law and there could be state or federal charges that include fines and possible jail. They should call us — 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286) — and allow us to take appropriate action.

If you spot a crocodile close to your pet or children, what is the best course of action? Make a lot of noise. In 23 years I have never seen nor heard of a saltwater croc getting aggressive or assertive with a child.

Are residents allowed to legally hunt or trap saltwater crocodiles? No. Not in any way.

How many crocodile attacks are reported on an annual basis?

I believe there are about two reported attacks against small pets.

What courses of action should residents take to protect their family and pets from crocodiles?

Just stay with your pet if a crocodile is in the area.

If you are with them, the crocs will most likely stay away. If you feel your pet is threatened, you can call FWC and we will investigate.

If you could have lunch with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and where would you go? Abe Lincoln at Burdines because of their fish sandwich and French fries. I guarantee Abe has never had a fish sandwich anywhere close to Burdines and their fries are the best. I would ask a lot of questions in terms of how to fix the race relations.

You boast an impressive collection of costumes. What is your favorite and what occasion requires you to wear it? A composer for Halloween. Folks mistook me for a drag queen, but I was actually a composer from the late 1800s.

You are the frontman, keyboardist and sing vocals for the cop rock band In Pursuit. What does the future hold for the band? Lollapalooza? We are looking at opening for the Rolling Stones at one of their upcoming shows. I know Mick has been trying to get ahold of me. We have spoken a number of times and I know it’s going to happen. He’s just old and forgetful.

NICE, BOY. NICE, CROC. Crocodile attacks on people are very rare. Most are defensive warnings to stay away from nests.

Nesting season is May and June, and hatching occurs at the end of July and in August. They are considered docile by trappers, who often use only ropes to subdue the wild animals.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Folks always want to know about the difference between crocodiles and alligators. It’s simple: some will see you later, others after a while.

Seriously, the main difference between the two is that gators are just a ‘cold weather’ version of crocodiles: they can live in climates that would kill any crocodile. Gators are black in color so they can attract more light from the sun to heat themselves; crocs are never black.

Think of an alligator as a solar panel with teeth, whereas crocodiles are just teeth.

DOING WELL, THANKS The American crocodile is an endangered species success story. According to the FWC, since 1975 their numbers have increased from fewer than 300 to more than 1,500 adults.

Today, they are classified as a threatened species. The number of crocodile complaints has risen as a result of their recovery and the increasing number of people living and recreating in South Florida.

DINNER’S SERVED In the Keys, crocodiles eat fish and iguanas. They also munch on small mammals like raccoons and, unfortunately, they eye pets as food. Crocodiles are VERY attracted to the trimmings from anglers’ recent fishing trips. Rather than pushing the fish scraps into the canal next to the fillet station, just freeze them and put them out with the garbage until the crocs go in hunt of a better food source.

TOOTHY INTERSECTION Of the 23 different species of crocodilians in the world, two species are native to the United States, and South Florida is the only place where both of these species coexist.

If I’m investigating a nuisance call, I want everyone in the neighborhood to call me and tell me about the croc. Every little piece of the puzzle gives me a better picture of what’s going on with this animal.”

FORWARDING ADDRESS? Nope. Think of crocodiles as rock stars without a Twitter or Instagram account. And moving them across Florida Bay won’t help. If they want to come back, they will.

So, when professional trappers relocate crocodiles, they don’t advertise the new environs. Second, trappers try to find the crocs a BETTER place to stay, like a hotel upgrade, with a better habitat.

Third, they really are very shy and enjoy their privacy.

TOUGH and SMART Crocodiles are the ultimate survivors; scientists believe they have been around for about 200 million years ago. Put it this way: they have outlived the dinosaurs by 65 million years and even humans, their most worthy opponent, haven’t extinguished the species.

There are 23 crocodilian species, which include crocodiles, caimans, alligators and Gharials. There are only two saltwater crocs — the American Crocodile and the Australian Saltwater Crocodile.

TRUE STORY

You just can’t make this stuff up

D

ogs are amazing companions. They offer friendship, love, comfort, protection and an overall sense of well being to the people in their lives. They are loyal to a fault; allegedly, even Hitler’s dogs loved him. That illustrates that they might not always be the best judges of character, but then again, sometimes neither are we. They do, however, provide an endless source of entertainment.

This story comes courtesy of Red, bartender at the Lighthouse Grill at Hyatt Place Faro Blanco. Earlier in life, Red had a dog. It was a great dog that lived a happy life in a fenced-in backyard. And Red had a neighbor who didn’t like her happy-go-lucky dog that much.

In the endless source of entertainment department, it seems that Red’s dog would often go over/under/ through the fence and do things in the neighbor’s backyard. Things like search for buried treasure, leave little gifts behind — it’s just those things that dogs do. It’s a known scientific fact that dogs prefer the backyards of their neighbors by a factor of 10:1 over their own backyards.* The neighbor, often annoyed about the dog, complained constantly to Red. Something else about the neighbor: he bred rabbits. Lots of rabbits.

Red wasn’t sure if they were show rabbits or food rabbits or just beloved pets. There were just plenty of rabbits to go around.

One day when Red got home, she went into the backyard and found one of her neighbor’s rabbits in her backyard. Sadly, the rabbit had gone to the great carrot patch in the sky. Recently deceased, as it turned out. None really too worse for the wear. In good shape for being totally without life, it was.

Horrified at what her seemingly murderous dog had done, Red cleaned up the little bunny corpse best she could and placed it gently into its little bunny cage in the neighbor’s backyard. As she beat a hasty retreat back to her yard, Red prayed that the neighbor would just think that the little bunny had passed away due to natural causes, have a moment, and go on with life.

What actually happened after that no one could have foreseen. (Cue ominous music.)

Later that same day, Red heard a blood-curdling scream emanating from the neighbor’s backyard. Red jumped up, ran out the back door and over to the fence JOHN separating her BARTUS backyard and the neighbor’s. Turning to Red, terror in his eyes, the neighbor said, “I buried this dead rabbit yesterday! And now he’s back!!!�

Not wanting to encourage zombie grave-walking rabbit theories with a potentially unhinged rabbit-loving neighbor (and certainly not wanting to break into hysterical laughter), Red offered her condolences and silently retreated into her house.

I have no idea whether the neighbor reburied the rabbit or had him cremated or did something else to ensure the little bunny corpse never returned to his cage.

Thanks to Red for the story that had me crying when she told it. I hope I did it justice here. And thanks to all who voted to nominate me for Best Local Celebrity and Best Local Elected Official, and Storm Watch as Best Local Band in this year’s Best of Marathon contest.
