PETA – that’s People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – arrived in the Keys and everyone seems to be having a good chuckle over it. There are even PETA signs that say, “Look, Don’t Cook — Enjoy fish without eating them.” Say what?

The campaign claims we are hurting fish by catching and eating them; again, say what? It’s kind of hard to take that too seriously in a town that relies on a fishing industry both commercial and recreational. Plus, a blackened hogfish sammy is delicious. So we asked locals…

Damage from this week’s Typhoon Jedi closed the Kansai International Airport in Japan indefinitely. In 2016 the airport served 25.2 million passengers, making it the 30th busiest airport in Asia and the third busiest in Japan. The airport was built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay to relieve pressure on the Osaka International Airport, which only handled domestic flights.

he list of presentations set for tonight’s Islamorada Village Council meeting includes reptiles, recycling and financial review.

The meeting starts at 5:30 at the Founders Park Community Center.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Captain David Dipre will talk about new plans for crocodiles in the Keys and how they are welcome to stay here, but not in populated areas.

“The problem is the two don’t mix. If a crocodile decided it wants to live in the marina in Key West, I’m sorry – we just can’t have that,” he said, adding there have been reports of a crocodile living in Islamorada’s Plantation Key Colony.

Dipre will talk about new plans to have designated zones throughout the Keys where the crocs will potentially be relocated. Another issue is that crocodiles will often return to their previous home, but not if trappers make that home unpleasant.

“There are some trappers who strongly believe that if you make them relatively unhappy where they are, if you go out and make life difficult for them, then take them somewhere else, they won’t return,” Dipre said, adding some of the methods could include loud noisemaking, and essentially annoying them.

Sightings aren’t common in the Keys, especially after Hurricane Irma, Dipre said, but there are more living in these islands than the FWC and other law enforcement are aware of.

“In most cases, we’re not going to have a crocodile attack. I can keep saying that, but let’s just make sure it’s not going to happen,” he said, adding that zones will be in isolated areas countywide.

The American crocodile is on the endangered species list, allowing its population to swell from 200 in the ’70s to more than 2,000 now in South Florida. Aside from cars on U.S.1, the crocodile doesn’t have a lot of predators in the Keys (one was run over last year in Key Largo).

After Dipre’s presentation, Mauldin and Jenkins auditor Daniel Anderson will give an audit report to the council, followed by Mary Swaney, assistant village manager, with a presentation on recycling properly in Islamorada.

“It’s really just a refresher for people,” Swaney said. “We don’t have any changes but just want to address the things people might not be clear about. Once in a while someone will call me and say their recycling wasn’t picked up, and it stinks, and if it wasn’t picked up, something is wrong.”

There will also be updates from Citizens’ Advisory Committees including the Local Planning Agency, Parks and Recreation, Near Shore Water and Water Quality Improvement.

You opened Pilates in Paradise in 2002 and have studied in New York with renowned Pilates master Romana Kryzanowska. What is the difference between Pilates and yoga? Pilates was designed by a man for men and is functional movement taught through exercise. Joseph Pilates created it to build strength and conditioning and it was called “Contrology” before he died, which stood for “the art and science of control.” In Pilates we use an apparatus. Machines do the work for you; the apparatus is designed for you to do the work.

Pilates classes are small. You get a lot of personal attention.

o say Christi Allen Franchini is enthusiastic is like saying the Florida Keys has nice weather. Her smile is as unlimited as her spirit and her aspirations benefit from both. She is the CEO of Pilates in Paradise, mother to Mikayla, wife of Victor and a quasi-messiah to her legion of dedicated clients – all of whom she calls personal friends.

Christi landed in Monroe County about 17 years ago as a personal trainer with a degree in business.

Since then, her resume has grown with her business acumen and includes past board positions with organizations like the Key Largo Chamber, GLEE and the American Cancer Society.

Your dad was in the U.S. Army and you lived all over the place growing up, including Texas and Germany. What was it like to be in Europe as a senior in high school?

It was so awesome. The military offers tours, so you could take these bus trips anywhere in Europe, so I saw a lot of Europe. Also, there was no drinking age, so my senior year was a blur.

What was college like for you at Washington State? I wanted to be a veterinarian and I was given a full academic scholarship and a full scholarship for room and books. My freshman year I had the same classes I had in high school, so I didn’t attend many classes and thought I would just breeze through. I failed my first year and was kicked out of school. Then, I had to reapply and was put on academic probation.

After busting out your first year, what got you turned around? My parents cut me off, so I got student loans and a full-time job and worked my way through college. I then switched majors to communication with an emphasis on advertising with a minor in business, emphasizing marketing because I wasn’t going to vet school with a 1.7 GPA. Your first business was a clothing boutique in Tallahassee, Florida.

What did you learn there? You cannot walk in when you open and lock the doors when you leave and not put any time in other than that. I loved saying I owned the business, but I didn’t put the time in. It was my personal closet. I took one of everything in the store.

What kind of advice do you have for someone who recently relocated to the Keys with the dream of starting their own business? Beware of having a business with too many workers, because it is hard finding the staff.

Especially after Irma. Get involved in your local community. We take care of each other and community service is the best way to network.

After you closed the clothing boutique, you were searching for a new career and decided to become a personal trainer. How did you make that leap? I had five qualifications: I wanted to interact with new people every day. I could not wear a suit or be in an office – ever. It had to be in fitness and I wanted to make my own hours and make lots of money. I knew I was going to become a personal trainer. I don’t know how, but I would figure it out.

Who should be using Pilates? Everyone. From couch potatoes that need to get moving to athletes who need to straighten out muscle imbalances and enhance athletic performance. When your body is balanced it moves more efficiently.

What does Pilates do for the regular person who just goes to work everyday? Pilates gives you the energy and ability outside of work. Your body has capabilities. That came to mind when dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Hauling stuff, cleaning, lifting, moving. The activities of our bodies were called upon more than others. Imagine when you have been at your desk for long time. How does your neck and back feel? Tight, uncomfortable, weak, weighted? Pilates unkinks the day’s stresses away and gives you the freedom, strength and energy to do anything you want to do outside of work.

You graduated from Leadership Monroe County as a member of Class XVII. Why is that considered the best class? Because we were in it.

Our “Barely Legal” class created Florida Keys Day.

If you could give a one-on-one Pilates session to anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why? I wouldn’t mind having Matthew McConaughey. He is so hot, but when I saw him in “Magic Mike,” his posture was horrible. I would put him on “the reformer” and fix him. Or him and Brad Pitt together. That would be a really hot session.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

People not recyling and plastic bag usage.

What is your most sinful guilty pleasure (that we can print)? Tequila. It’s my daily medicine. It’s good for the gut, you know!

Who is the one person on the November ballot who has already earned your vote and why? After 16 years of dealing with a wide range of people and views daily, i never discuss politics!

You are stranded on a desert island, what are five things you can’t live without? Coconuts, machete, tequila, a hat and some suncreen.

Tea or coffee? Coffee! With my work schedule there are many days I wish I had a coffee IV. Hollywood comes knocking and is going to make a movie based on your life. Who plays you? Me of course! Put me in front of the camera and watch me shine!

Final tallies: damage done by Hurricane Irma’s rampage through the Keys

I

t’s easy for Florida Keys residents or visitors to recall where they were in September 2017, when it became fully apparent Hurricane Irma would be a storm unlike any other. Four days prior to the storm, Gov. Rick Scott ordered a mandatory evacuation at the Marathon Government Center for both residents and tourists. At that point, Sept. 6, Irma was moving toward Puerto Rico after slamming small northern Caribbean islands before making its way to the Keys as a Category 4 hurricane on Sept.

STORM Irma made landfall on Cudjoe Key at 9 a.m., Sept. 10, at Category 4 intensity, with winds of 130 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, increasing wind shear and land interaction caused the satellite appearance of the storm to become ragged later that day, and Irma weakened to Category 3 intensity before making its seventh and final landfall in Marco Island later that day with sustained winds of 115 mph.

HOMES According to Monroe County officials, of the nearly 40,000 homes affected by the storm, 1,179 were destroyed, with the highest numbers of lost homes in Marathon (394) and Big Pine Key (473). On Cudjoe Key, where the storm made landfall, 81 homes were destroyed. Nearly 3,000 homes sustained major damage, the majority in Marathon (1,402); 5,391 had minor dam-

age; and 5,467 homes were unaffected – mostly in Key Largo (2,581) and Stock Island (895). Of these numbers, the hardest-hit areas were mobile homes, manufactured homes and RVs.

DEATHS According to Monroe County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Steckbauer, there were 17 hurricane-related deaths, with three directly caused by the storm. According to the National Hurricane Center, three adult males drowned in the Middle and Lower Keys during the storm’s passage. Two of the victims were found near the boats on which they lived just offshore.

The remaining circumstances and events responsible for the deaths are not known.

DEBRIS According to county spokeswoman Cammy Clark, 2.5 million cubic yards of debris were removed from the Keys. That included vegetation along with construction and demolition waste. About 20,000 appliances were removed from Keys roads after lining them for months.

“Some of the vegetative debris was burned in the Keys. All white goods have their freon removed” before removal to the mainland for recycling or disposal.

BOATS Clark said more than 1,600 damaged or destroyed vessels were removed from Keys waters, starting about a month after the storm. Two-thirds of the 300 boats docked at the Boot Key Harbor City Marina in Marathon were destroyed, among others in the Lower

Keys which either drifted away or sank. Boats were removed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Coast Guard, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, among others, which staged the boats in vessel graveyards prior to dismantling and hauling them away.

FEMA As of Sept. 4, Monroe County homeowners, renters and businesses have received more than $514 million in federal funding to help them recover from Hurricane Irma, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Of that amount, $180 million was in low-interest disaster loans to repair and rebuild homes and businesses.

There are still 104 households living in temporary FEMA trailers. There are 22 households living in FEMA direct-leased properties. This is down from the original 243 households (215 in travel trailers and 28 in direct-leased properties) who have stayed temporarily in housing supplied by FEMA.

FEMA PROJECTS As of last month, the county has submitted $39.8 million in Irma-related projects for FEMA reimbursement.

FEMA has obligated (approved) about $8.1 million and made it available to the state for distribution to the county.

As of Aug. 20, the county has received about $2.3 million from the state of the county’s obligated funds.

In Marathon, of $32 million submitted in projects, about $1 million has been obligated.

The Village of Islamorada has submitted about $8 million in projects, along with Key West at $7 million.

CANALS So far, about 1,100 cubic yards of marine debris have been pulled from 103 heavily affected Keys canals. Failed cleanup efforts by state-hired DRC Environmental Services, which pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project, have resumed under Adventure Environmental with help from subcontractors including ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier, Arnolds Towing and Salvage of Stock Island and Tetra Tech Inc., a non-local commercial diving company. The county is using a grant of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program to pay for the cleanup, which started Aug. 17. Six crews on 15 barges throughout the Keys will continue cleaning for the next seven months.

OTHER FACTS: “Hurricane Irma” was the No. 1 searched Google topic nationally and globally in 2017.

The hurricane killed a total of 129 people on its rampage through the Caribbean and Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. Fortyfour of those deaths were directly caused by the storm, while 85 were indirect deaths.

M

aranta arundinacea is a West Indian botanical that produces tubular underground growths called rhizomes. When harvested and processed, these rhizomes produce a starchy powder that is sold in the spice aisles of grocery stores as arrowroot. Arrowroot is most popularly used as a thickening agent when making soups, sauces, gravies and desserts. There is a Florida version of arrowroot, sort of. The plant, sometimes referred to as Florida arrowroot, was used

by South Florida’s aboriginal people, Seminole Indians, and early pioneers as an important food source and flour substitute.

Florida arrowroot is actually one of North America’s only native cycads, an order of plants considered some of the oldest in the world and referred to in certain circles as living fossils.

Whether it is referred to as Zamia integrifolia, pomila, or floridana, as there does not seem to be a unified position on the actual name, Florida arrowroot is historically referred to as coontie. Said to be the derivative of a Seminole word for the plant, coontie is more commonly found in landscaped property than its native natural hammocks around South Florida and the Keys.

Fontaneda, the 16th century Spanish shipwreck survivor who spent 17 years living with the Calusa Indians, would write a memoir that included a description of the coontie. “The inhabitants make bread of roots, which is their common food the greater part of year, and because of the lake which rises in some seasons so high, that the roots cannot be reached in consequence of the water, they are for some time without this bread.”

The proper handling was paramount, as coontie produces a poison known as cycasin capable of inducing diarrhea, vomiting and seizures.

After being harvested, the tubular stem was thoroughly washed and ground to a pulp using a pestle and mortar. The pulp was then soaked in water and strained through animal skins to separate the coontie from its starch. After letting the residue soak for several days to leach the poison, the starchy residue was dried until a yellowish powder that looked like flour was left behind that could be used to make, among other staples, bread. By the 1880s, several coontie mills were operating along the Miami River. During World War I, just one of these mills is said to have produced 18 tons of this flour substitute a day.

“D

on’t pass it up, pick it up.” That’s the message from Leadership Monroe Class XXVI*, otherwise known as the “Stormtroopers” — a homage to the terrible

Irma.

Envisioning a “Kiki”-type response, the class is encouraging locals, anyone really, to create their own video raising awareness about picking up debris and throwing it away.

“We’re trying to take the blinders off,” said Class of XXVI’s Bruce Halle, also the mayor of Layton. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the Keys clean.”

To kick off the contest, which features a cash prize, the class created its own video that will be released on Facebook on the anniversary of the storm. The class conceived of the project as the Keys began the arduous task of cleaning up after the hurricane. Realizing that most of the “big” trash was being trucked away, they knew that many of the smaller pieces would be left behind — the kind it’s easy to notice but continue past.

So, who should participate? Well, the class envisions something like what happened with the ALS ice bucket challenge — where one group or person would post a video and call out another to participate, too.

“I really see law enforcement and students taking part in this,” said Mallory Jones, also a class member.

“That’s one of the reasons why we chose the Facebook platform. And that’s something for competitors to hone in on — your video doesn’t have to have the best footage or sound to win, it just has to get the most likes. Winning the contest will also be about marketing your video online.”

The class’ own video, which features most in full Stormtrooper costumes, was filmed at Sombrero Beach. Videos should have a “Star Wars” or Stormtrooper theme.

“It was hot, but we learned the dance steps and it was all made possible by the ‘liquid coordination’ provided by our classmate Walt Stephens,” said Jones.

Videos must be at least 15 seconds, and as long as 60 seconds. The videos will be published on the Facebook page Monroe: Don’t Pass It Up Pick It Up. The complete rules are posted on the Facebook page. * Editor’s note: Leadership Monroe Class XXVI is the BEST class.

he program is aimed at residents who are active in leadership roles within the private sector, government, or community organizations. Through a series of one-, two-, or three-day sessions over seven months, participants examine fundamental public and private segments throughout the county to inform and help them make quality leadership decisions which they can incorporate into their respective companies and organizations. The program also provides an environment for mutual awareness on community issues, which class members confront. Sessions begin Sept. 28 in Key West, with subsequent monthly classes, throughout the Keys, culminating with graduation in April 2019.

Led by experts and the heads of the respective fields surveyed, sessions this year include focusing on the challenges and opportunities that confront the dynamic tourism industry and the Keys economy, vital environmental issues from the Everglades to Florida Bay and the coral reefs, the Monroe County education system, the multi-levels of government, the judiciary and law system, the historical and present military significance in the Keys, emergency management and emerging best practices, an expanded examination of the Keys’ health care and human services, the increasing impact of the arts and creative industries, the non-profit sectors, and the rapidly changing media platforms that inform the citizenry and affect and influence public policy, along with ongoing, intensive leadership development.

Established in 1992 to address the rapidly changing needs and concerns of the county, develop a group of well-educated leaders, help guide the community in a positive direction, and foster county-wide effective and non-partisan alliances, Leadership Monroe County is an independent non-profit, governed by a county-wide 17-member board of directors.

KEYS ARTIST IS ‘INSPIRED DAILY TO PAINT’ KELLY KRIEGER

recently visited Key Largo Art Gallery and met artist Carmen Sotolongo-Kelley. We talked a little about each artist and I enjoyed viewing a variety of styles that included works from 30 artists. Sotolongo-Kelley’s own work is vibrant, and represents her passion for life, love for people, and appreciation for the environment. By blending her experiences, travels, and education, we get to be a part of her personal journey through her paintings.

Sotolongo-Kelley and her family fled from Cuba to the United States in 1962. Her father was a doctor and mother a teacher with a doctorate in pedagogy while in Cuba, but, after relocating to the U.S., they had to go back to school to re-earn their degrees. With little money and only the clothing they were wearing, her parents spent years working odd jobs to support their family and rebuild a new life. Eventually her father earned his degree in medicine and her mother, a doctorate in education.

Humble beginnings provided Sotolongo-Kelley with a deeper appreciation for the simple things in life we can sometimes take for granted. She always enjoyed taking art classes as well as partici-

pating in art shows in middle and high school. She continued her education, combining her interests when she decided to major in art and social science, with a focus in oceanography.

While teaching at Florida Institute of Oceanography, she created the idea for an oceanography camp for girls at the University of South Florida Marine Science campus which recently celebrated its 25th year. This program offers many young girls the opportunity to study marine science who would normally not be able to do so. Over the years, she also taught in Pinellas and Lee Counties, and now teaches art at Coral Shores High School, where she was voted teacher of the year.

“I’m inspired daily to paint, and to share my journey as an artist with kids in my classroom,” she said. “I was lucky to have had amazing art teachers in middle school and high school who were graduates from Pratt Institute in New York. Ideas and creativity need to be nourished in

school. I share my work with my students and paint to show them new techniques. My paintings are finished in my mind before I add the paint to the canvas. I try to share that enthusiasm. You paint or draw with your eyes and your hand is your tool. They need to connect.”

Statistics have shown over and over the importance of the arts through education and Car-

men is a perfect example. “My favorite time of day is when I teach students with special needs,” she said. “It is so refreshing to see them enjoy the creations and projects they take home. This year students are grouped with the AP drawing classes and it’s a great combination. I believe art and music should always be part of the school curriculum. Creative minds need to be developed.

They are the future musicians, architects, designers and artists.

Even if they don’t go into the art field, its important to continue to do what you like. Art is beauty, it’s therapy for the soul.”

Sotolongo-Kelley is closely involved in her community and helping others. Whether it’s the Boys and Girls Club Miami Gala (November), The Purple Pumpkin Rett Gala, (October) or an event for the Marrvelous Pet Rescue and Cans Across the Keys, she will dedicate her time and talents to make a difference.

Sotolongo-Kelley has come a long way since she arrived in the United States as that 6-year-old girl who didn’t know what the future held. More than 50 years later, she has inspired her young students to look toward their future, embrace what makes them happy and follow their dreams.

WILD SIDE MARATHON VETERINARY HOSPITAL IS SOUTH FLORIDA’S DESTINATION FOR EXOTIC ANIMAL CARE

I

Earlier in the week, Dr. Doug Mader removed a titanium plate from “Split Jaw,” a 9-foot alligator from the Everglades Outpost in Florida City. When the drill was making the gator “nervous,” Dr. Mader abandoned it in favor of loosening the screws by hand. Yes, the gator was sedated. CONTRIBUTED

t’s a rare morning that a 9-foot alligator is wheeled into a veterinary clinic for surgery. But then Marathon Veterinary Hospital isn’t an average clinic, and this patient is a familiar face. Dr. Doug Mader and his round-the-clock medical team are the Keys destination for all things furry, feathered, and in the case of the gator, manytoothed.

“Now his name’s Split Jaw. It originally was Destroyer,” said Mader. This reptile, who calls Everglades Outpost home, has returned for a third procedure on his broken jaw. The source of his recurring injuries is fighting.

“Two of them bit each other in the face.

He bit a bigger one, and the bigger one rolled and split his lower jaw. So he came in, and I fixed the lower jaw. Then, about a year later he got in another fight, and that alligator broke the side of his jaw.” Split Jaw has visible wiring in the bottom front of his jaw and a long titanium plate running along the lower left side of his mouth.

“He’s in the penalty box,” said Mader, “because he is a trouble maker.”

The three-person volunteer team from Everglades Outpost, a wildlife sanctuary in Florida City, delivered the gator Thursday morning, along with two Japanese snow macaques and a sick possum. They take methodical care with the alligator, unzipping him from his travel “body bag,” and they speak to him gently as Mader delivers a shot of the sedative Telazol.

“We aren’t just responsible for his safety, but the safety of everyone in this room,” said

Martha Frassica-Rivera, a veteran volunteer for the Outpost assisting in the transport. “He’s such a smart gator, and that’s what makes him dangerous,” she said.

This kind of relationship with a dangerous alligator is moving, especially in a summer that alligator attacks have dominated regional news.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, attacks have spiked this year at 16 — the highest since 2001. The first week in July, a diver’s arm was badly mauled by an alligator in the Charlotte County Golf Course Lake. A couple of days later, a 71–year-old woman was airlifted out of Fort Meyers after being bitten, and a week after that, a 10-year-old boy was bitten while on vacation in Acadia.

The most horrifying and heartbreaking of the summer was the story of Shizuka Matsuki, a woman walking her dogs in Davie, Florida. Matsuki was dragged into a waterway by a 12-foot alligator, while her dogs barked nearby. Emergency responders recovered Matsuki alive, but she died shortly after.

As Florida becomes more populated — not to mention polluted — human developments disturb the habitats of some 1.25 million gators that have called the land home for nearly 40 million years.

In most cases of human-alligator encounters, the alligator ends up dead. This runs counter to the attitude of the Everglades Outpost, a non-profit that offers sanctuary to animals from “illegal, traumatic, or abusive” situations. Ideally, they rehabilitate and release them into the wild, but in cases like this gator, they will keep the animal on the preserve because of its dangerous nature.

Mader has been seeing exotic patients from the Outpost for 20 years. “Not many vets are trained for alligators,” Mader said. He is triple board-certified. In addition to feline and canine training, he’s trained in primates and zoo animal medicine, and, of course, reptiles. Thursday is his “exotic day.” Mader works with “a half dozen alligator facilities in the Homestead area and on the Tamiami Trail with all the tourist mom and pop shops. They all have an alligator out by their airboat. And I take care of those alligators.”

GATHERING THOUGHTS FOR 2020

Interactive presentation provides resident feedback

I

n the spring of 2017, a 17page questionnaire regarding business and residential priorities circulated the Keys. 433 were returned. It was created to help craft the 2018 budget with the strategic plan in mind, since it expires in 2020.

Monroe County’s Strategic Planner Kimberly Matthews knew there had to be a better way. The interactive process she implemented has already polled 392 people during six presentations. And she’s just now getting to the halfway mark of collecting feedback.

“This is more straightforward,” said Matthews. “At the end of the three months, we will compile all the answers and present the findings to the county commissioners. What you have to say really matters to us.”

At the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce general meeting on Aug. 20, 26 Lower Keys residents put their opinions to work with the anonymous interactive presentation via their cell phones.

Questions included words to describe their personal beliefs for the future of Monroe County, with words like “affordable,” “sustainable” and “environment” popping up.

Before Hurricane Irma, recurring issues included traffic and workforce housing, and since the storm, she has seen other priorities rise, including resiliency and insurance rates.

Next, members were asked to rank what they believe should be the county’s top priorities in the next three to five years. During this par-

ticular presentation, they were ranked 1) affordable workforce housing, 2) traffic on U.S.1, 3) growth control and over-development, 4) water quality, 5) wind insurance rates, 6) building to resiliency, 7) hardening infrastructure such as cellular and utilities, and 8) planning building and code processes.

The director of recovery asked a specific question on the survey: What aspect of the community do you feel was more impacted by Hurricane Irma? In an overwhelming response, housing had 85 percent of the vote, easily outpacing infrastructure, environment and jobs.

The chamber members were then asked what redevelopment project they would feel would be most beneficial to community; statements like “permits in a timely manner,” “underground utilities,” and “tiny homes” were shown on the projector.

The whole process takes about 30 minutes. Other questions included what things Monroe County does well, and what it can improve on, and whether “you get your money’s worth” with Monroe County.

Traffic alerts for Keys drivers

The Florida Department of Transportation informed the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office of construction-related, scheduled U.S. 1 lane closures for the following areas on Thursday, Sept. 6:

• The northbound lane at MM 19.6 will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Drivers will be flagged around the work zones.

• One northbound lane on will be closed near MM 106 between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Groups host forum for 2018 candidates The Island of Key Largo Federation of Homeowner Associations, the Tavernier Community Association, and the Upper Keys League of Women Voters will host a candidate forum and amendment primer on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Murray Nelson Government Center, MM 102 Bayside, Key Largo. The evening starts at 5:30 p.m. with a “Meet the Candidate” refreshment hour, including free snacks provided by the host organizations and a cash bar provided by the Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center. Legal advice at pro bono clinics Pro bono legal assistance – hurricane related or otherwise – will be taking place for free on Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Key Largo library, on Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Marathon United Methodist Church, and on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Key West Courthouse. These are not the “town hall” style meetings that occurred after the hurricane, this is purely free legal services where if an attorney agrees to continue on with the case they are prohibited from accepting any money for their services.

This program also provides funds for things like legal costs (filing fees, etc.) and assistance with obtaining financial help, like first, last and security for those being evicted.
