The family-friendly event will include a variety of free food, beverages, live music, children’s activities, animals from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm and giveaways. Organizers will also recognize the people and groups that played a role in getting the Keys through the storm and that continue to play a role in Florida Keys recovery.

Some tables and chairs will be available; guests are welcome to bring their own. The event is free.

The City of Marathon is having a bash on Sunday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the park to celebrate “our city’s progress this past year.”

“I don’t want to celebrate Irma, but I want to celebrate the thousands of emergency service personnel, staff, volunteers and residents who took part in the recovery,” said City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

The festivities include food, ice cream and toppings, games, arts and crafts and music. Local emergency vehicles will be on display for kids to inspect, and recovery and rescue organizations will have booths with more information.

In 2016 the airport served 25.2 million passengers, making it the 30th busiest airport in Asia and the third busiest in Japan. ome values in Marathon have gone up, but the city’s proposed millage rate for fiscal year 2019, which starts Oct. 1, is the same as the current rate.

The city is proposing a tentative tax rate of 2.59 mills, or $2.59 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the first hearing for which is Thursday, Sept. 6 at Marathon City Hall.

If approved, the owner of a $400,000 homesteaded home would pay $1,036 in city taxes next year.

Marathon’s ad valorem taxable value for the upcoming fiscal year is $2.52 billion, up from $2.38 billion in fiscal year 2018.

renewed,” as written in a previously approved ordinance.

Although it is a county-approved tax, it cannot be levied in the city unless the City Council consents by ordinance to inclusion in the taxing district.

Under Florida law, an ordinance has to be approved on two separate days before it can be adopted, meaning all proposed ordinances appear on two different City Council agendas.

The Board of Monroe County Commissioners-approved taxing district was first approved in June. The tax will be .05 mills or less for a maximum of 10 years. The county commissioners approved it for a second time in July, unanimously.

The goal is to raise about $15 million from the tax. Another $15 million is being raised through philanthropic efforts in the community. The tax, which will roll out in 2019, covers properties between MMs 40 and 63, including Duck Key and Key Colony Beach, and will go toward indigent care — losses incurred from patients with no insurance and unpaid hospital bills.

Baptist bought Fishermen’s Community Hospital in 2017. Shortly after, it was destroyed by Hurricane Irma.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m., the council will discuss: Aviation Boulevard traffic control, the city’s First Time Homebuyer Program, and accepting 300 affordable housing unit allocations from the state.

aranta arundinacea is a West Indian botanical that produces tubular underground growths called rhizomes. When harvested and processed, these rhizomes produce a starchy powder that is sold in the spice aisles of grocery stores as arrowroot. Arrowroot is most popularly used as a thickening agent when making soups, sauces, gravies and desserts. There is a Florida version of arrowroot, sort of. The plant, sometimes referred to as Florida arrowroot, was used

by South Florida’s aboriginal people, Seminole Indians, and early pioneers as an important food source and flour substitute.

Florida arrowroot is actually one of North America’s only native cycads, an order of plants considered some of the oldest in the world and referred to in certain circles as living fossils.

Whether it is referred to as Zamia integrifolia, pomila, or floridana, as there does not seem to be a unified position on the actual name, Florida arrowroot is historically referred to as coontie. Said to be the derivative of a Seminole word for the plant, coontie is more commonly found in landscaped property than its native natural hammocks around South Florida and the Keys.

Fontaneda, the 16th century Spanish shipwreck survivor who spent 17 years living with the Calusa Indians, would write a memoir that included a description of the coontie. “The inhabitants make bread of roots, which is their common food the greater part of year, and because of the lake which rises in some seasons so high, that the roots cannot be reached in consequence of the water, they are for some time without this bread.”

The proper handling was paramount, as coontie produces a poison known as cycasin capable of inducing diarrhea, vomiting and seizures.

After being harvested, the tubular stem was thoroughly washed and ground to a pulp using a pestle and mortar. The pulp was then soaked in water and strained through animal skins to separate the coontie from its starch. After letting the residue soak for several days to leach the poison, the starchy residue was dried until a yellowish powder that looked like flour was left behind that could be used to make, among other staples, bread. By the 1880s, several coontie mills were operating along the Miami River. During World War I, just one of these mills is said to have produced 18 tons of this flour substitute a day.

Final tallies: damage done by Hurricane Irma’s rampage through the Keys

I

t’s easy for Florida Keys residents or visitors to recall where they were in September 2017, when it became fully apparent Hurricane Irma would be a storm unlike any other. Four days prior to the storm, Gov. Rick Scott ordered a mandatory evacuation at the Marathon Government Center for both residents and tourists. At that point, Sept. 6, Irma was moving toward Puerto Rico after slamming small northern Caribbean islands before making its way to the Keys as a Category 4 hurricane on Sept.

10. These are the final tallies and progress made in the 12 months since.

STORM Irma made landfall on Cudjoe Key at 9 a.m., Sept. 10, at Category 4 intensity, with winds of 130 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, increasing wind shear and land interaction caused the satellite appearance of the storm to become ragged later that day, and Irma weakened to Category 3 intensity before making its seventh and final landfall in Marco Island later that day with sustained winds of 115 mph.

HOMES According to Monroe County officials, of the nearly 40,000 homes affected by the storm, 1,179 were destroyed, with the highest numbers of lost homes in Marathon (394) and Big Pine Key (473). On Cudjoe Key, where the storm made landfall, 81 homes were destroyed. Nearly 3,000 homes sustained major damage, the majority in Marathon (1,402); 5,391 had minor dam-

age; and 5,467 homes were unaffected – mostly in Key Largo (2,581) and Stock Island (895). Of these numbers, the hardest-hit areas were mobile homes, manufactured homes and RVs.

DEATHS According to Monroe County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Steckbauer, there were 17 hurricane-related deaths, with three directly caused by the storm. According to the National Hurricane Center, three adult males drowned in the Middle and Lower Keys during the storm’s passage. Two of the victims were found near the boats on which they lived just offshore.

The remaining circumstances and events responsible for the deaths are not known.

DEBRIS According to county spokeswoman Cammy Clark, 2.5 million cubic yards of debris were removed from the Keys. That included vegetation along with construction and demolition waste. About 20,000 appliances were removed from Keys roads after lining them for months.

“Some of the vegetative debris was burned in the Keys. All white goods have their freon removed” before removal to the mainland for recycling or disposal.

BOATS Clark said more than 1,600 damaged or destroyed vessels were removed from Keys waters, starting about a month after the storm. Two-thirds of the 300 boats docked at the Boot Key Harbor City Marina in Marathon were destroyed, among others in the Lower

Keys which either drifted away or sank. Boats were removed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Coast Guard, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, among others, which staged the boats in vessel graveyards prior to dismantling and hauling them away.

FEMA As of Sept. 4, Monroe County homeowners, renters and businesses have received more than $514 million in federal funding to help them recover from Hurricane Irma, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Of that amount, $180 million was in low-interest disaster loans to repair and rebuild homes and businesses.

There are still 104 households living in temporary FEMA trailers. There are 22 households living in FEMA direct-leased properties. This is down from the original 243 households (215 in travel trailers and 28 in direct-leased properties) who have stayed temporarily in housing supplied by FEMA.

FEMA PROJECTS As of last month, the county has submitted $39.8 million in Irma-related projects for FEMA reimbursement.

FEMA has obligated (approved) about $8.1 million and made it available to the state for distribution to the county.

As of Aug. 20, the county has received about $2.3 million from the state of the county’s obligated funds.

The Village of Islamorada has submitted about $8 million in projects, along with Key West at $7 million.

CANALS So far, about 1,100 cubic yards of marine debris have been pulled from 103 heavily affected Keys canals. Failed cleanup efforts by state-hired DRC Environmental Services, which pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project, have resumed under Adventure Environmental with help from subcontractors including ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier, Arnolds Towing and Salvage of Stock Island and Tetra Tech Inc., a non-local commercial diving company. The county is using a grant of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program to pay for the cleanup, which started Aug. 17. Six crews on 15 barges throughout the Keys will continue cleaning for the next seven months.

OTHER FACTS: “Hurricane Irma” was the No. 1 searched Google topic nationally and globally in 2017.

The hurricane killed a total of 129 people on its rampage through the Caribbean and Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. Fortyfour of those deaths were directly caused by the storm, while 85 were indirect deaths.

The hurricane-driven sand almost covered the tops of the picnic tables at Sombrero Beach in Marathon. FEMA recently approved a plan to restore the beach to what it was, but the City of Marathon must wait until it has the $1.4 million in the bank.

‘I LIKE HELPING’

Proudest achievement? In my personal life, my family. In my professional life, getting ordained and serving as the rector of St. Columba Episcopal Church, creating The Hammock House, Free After School and Camp Program, and the Florida Keys Celtic Festival.

What was your first job? I had a summer job as an A&W carhop … and one time a customer asked me to run away and join the carnival, which I did not do.

A

fter Hurricane Irma, Rev. Debra Andrew Maconaughey, the Reverend Canon and Rector of St. Columba, really stepped up for the community – first by opening the church’s doors for incoming supplies, and then by housing community members who lost everything. “Our parish strives to be a strong partner in the community so I am involved in all different kinds of endeavors,” she said.

Regionally, she is president of the Board of Episcopal Charities of the Diocese of Southeast Florida, which offers an opportunity to network with many different nonprofits and charities.

Locally, she celebrates with her congregation, conducts services on Sundays and during the week, presides at weddings and funerals, helps people in crisis, and welcomes people to the community.

And the list continues: she helps at The Hammock House and the Nearly New Thrift Boutique and the church’s Five Dollar Bag Sale; she helps to coordinate The Florida Keys Celtic Festival; and is honored to serve as the president of the KAIR and Independence Cay boards. “KAIR and Independence Cay offer a consistent and tangible way to help people in our local community and I get to work with wonderful people,” she said. “I like helping.”

The Keys reminded her of the small town she grew up in in New England, after moving here with her husband Kirk to Ramrod Key after she finished seminary school. “He basically said he was going to miss me if I stayed in Virginia, so I made the move and have loved it since the first day.”

She and Kirk share two basset hounds, Layla and Charlie, and have four grown children. “Isabel, a graduate of Marathon High School, studied under Chef Green and the wonderful Culinary Arts Program at MHS,” she said. Her daughter attended Johnson and Wales and is now working at Victoria and Albert’s at Disney World. They also have two grandchildren, Leonardo and Kristina, whom they love to dote over.

Her parents, Tom and Ruth, also live in Marathon. “And, my mom is a big fan of Publix,” she said.

Nickname? Rev. Deb One fun fact about you? I want to learn how to play the xylophone.

What’s the most rewarding project you’ve worked on? St. Columba Workforce Housing Corporation and the building complex at 1655 Overseas Highway and organizing eyeglass clinic projects in Madagascar and Southern Sudan.

Following Hurricane Irma, what are some of the projects St. Columba worked on to get the community back on its feet? From money donated to the church, we quickly rented and purchased 22 travel trailers to house residents in the church parking lot. We operated a distribution center for the 25 truckloads of goods that came down from the mainland.

We helped purchase and repair several boats in Boot Key Harbor. We opened a mission center and housed more than 1,000 volunteers who came to help in the Keys. We prepared and served breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Vulnerable Persons Shelter that was located at the Guidance Care Day Center. We acted as advocate for the community with FEMA

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? Denzel Washington, and we order a beautiful plate of salmon with a glass of pinot grigio.

Favorite Keysy thing to do? Drive on Overseas Highway.

Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? Wonder Woman.

What would your superpower be?

Super-speed.

What’s the biggest take-away from the hurricane? The coming together of all kinds of groups and people to help one another. That when people work together, any challenge can be overcome.

What does success look like? Preparing to hold the 6th annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival, which helps fund The Hammock House and free afterschool and free summer camps which have been helping families in the Middle Keys since 2011.

We live in a world of abundance, and if we just shared, there would be more than enough for everyone.

Best piece of advice you ever received? Just show up, don’t be afraid and do your best.

What is your nerdiest passion? Polishing items for the Nearly New Thrift Boutique.

If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? My cellphone and a solar charger. You can get news, read a book, and talk on the phone.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Watching public television crime series If you could change the world, what would you do? Convince people that we live in a world of abundance, and if we just shared, there would be more than enough for everyone.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to? I love to go on mission and pilgrimage trips, I think Uganda, Ireland and Iona in Scotland have been my favorites.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be creative and in charge.

Sen. John McCain had a long-standing love affair with the place, people

H

ere’s a little-known fact: Sen. John McCain (1936-2018) loved Key West and the people in it. He was known to visit at least once a year, but the only place to spot him in public was at the Rusty Anchor.

“He would sit at the family table,” said Trish Davila, who along with parents Patty and Ramon Rodriguez were the former owners of the popular, rustic restaurant on Stock Island. “We would bring him in through the back door and the kitchen.” Davila said he was shielded by his friends, and the decency of Conchs, until dinner was over.

“Then he would stand up and shake hands, give autographs, take pictures,” Davila said. “It didn’t matter how long the line was. He would stay until he had met everyone.”

In fact, Davila and her husband Marcus flew to Arizona in 2013 to make the rehearsal wedding dinner for McCain’s son — John Sidney “Jack” McCain IV. “The Rusty Anchor was John’s favorite restaurant in the whole world,” said Key West attorney David Paul Horan, a longtime friend. Horan and his wife, Karen, hosted the dinner. “It was a Key West extravaganza — Key lime pie to stone crabs to fried lobster to conch fritters and conch salad. We set a high bar out in Phoenix that I don’t think anybody’s touched since.”

Horan and McCain enjoyed a three-decade-plus friendship. They were introduced by Jerry Dorminy, owner of the Hog’s Breath Saloons in Fort Walton and Key West. Horan said McCain wanted to go diving and Dorminy provided the connection, having known McCain since the days he needed a break from Pensacola flight training and party somewhere he “wouldn’t get in trouble.”

“He came to Key West to go diving with me,” said Horan, estimating it had to be the mid-1980s when McCain was still a U.S. Representative, and it became a regular thing. “I think I ran out of fuel twice with him on the boat.

Finally, he decided he wouldn’t get on

the boat unless we went directly to the fuel dock.”

Horan and McCain shared a love for the finer things in life — great friends, good adventures. Through McCain, Horan would go on to meet the likes of Sen. Fred Thompson, Warren Beatty and Admiral Thomas Lynch. They played Wiffle ball, fished for catfish with $5 reels, snorkeled with tarpon and had paintball wars.

“Faith in myself was important, and remains important to my self-esteem.

But I discovered in prison that faith in myself alone, separate from other, more important allegiances, was ultimately no match for the cruelty that human beings could devise when they were entirely unencumbered by respect for the God-given dignity of man. This is the lesson I learned in prison. It is, perhaps, the most important lesson I have ever learned.”

“John was hard to keep up with,” said Horan. “This one time he wanted to go on a hike, it was 110 degrees, to someplace called ‘Zebra Falls.’ We walk and walk and walk. We came to a place with a big rock and the water comes off it … about 10 inches. I said, ‘Is this it?’”

Horan said he was always impressed with McCain’s faith, especially during his years of incarceration in the “Hanoi Hilton” as a prisoner of war. He also appreciated his ethics. After McCain passed the McCain-Feingold Act of 2002 to reform campaign finance, he was forced to fly commercial to Key West while his wife piloted her own jet with the rest of the family to the islands. Horan said he told McCain, “Boy, you figured that one out, didn’t you?”

“We lost a good man in Sen. John McCain,” Horan said.

Interactive presentation provides resident feedback

I

n the spring of 2017, a 17page questionnaire regarding business and residential priorities circulated the Keys. 433 were returned. It was created to help craft the 2018 budget with the strategic plan in mind, since it expires in 2020.

Monroe County’s Strategic Planner Kimberly Matthews knew there had to be a better way. The interactive process she implemented has already polled 392 people during six presentations. And she’s just now getting to the halfway mark of collecting feedback. “This is more straightforward,� said Matthews. “At the end of the three months, we will compile all the answers and present the findings to the county commissioners. What you have to say really matters to us.�

At the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce general meeting on Aug. 20, 26 Lower Keys residents put their opinions to work with the anonymous interactive presentation via their cell phones.

Questions included words to describe their personal beliefs for the future of Monroe County, with words like “affordable,� “sustainable� and “environment� popping up.

Before Hurricane Irma, recurring issues included traffic and workforce housing, and since the storm, she has seen other priorities rise, including resiliency and insurance rates.

Next, members were asked to rank what they believe should be the county’s top priorities in the next three to five years. During this par-

ticular presentation, they were ranked 1) affordable workforce housing, 2) traffic on U.S.1, 3) growth control and over-development, 4) water quality, 5) wind insurance rates, 6) building to resiliency, 7) hardening infrastructure such as cellular and utilities, and 8) planning building and code processes.

The director of recovery asked a specific question on the survey: What aspect of the community do you feel was more impacted by Hurricane Irma? In an overwhelming response, housing had 85 percent of the vote, easily outpacing infrastructure, environment and jobs.

The chamber members were then asked what redevelopment project they would feel would be most beneficial to community; statements like “permits in a timely manner,� “underground utilities,� and “tiny homes� were shown on the projector.

The whole process takes about 30 minutes. Other questions included what things Monroe County does well, and what it can improve on, and whether “you get your money’s worth� with Monroe County.

“D

on’t pass it up, pick it up.” That’s the message from Leadership Monroe Class XXVI*, otherwise known as the “Stormtroopers” — a homage to the terrible

Irma.

Envisioning a “Kiki”-type response, the class is encouraging locals, anyone really, to create their own video raising awareness about picking up debris and throwing it away.

“We’re trying to take the blinders off,” said Class of XXVI’s Bruce Halle, also the mayor of Layton. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the Keys clean.”

To kick off the contest, which features a cash prize, the class created its own video that will be released on Facebook on the anniversary of the storm. The class conceived of the project as the Keys began the arduous task of cleaning up after the hurricane. Realizing that most of the “big” trash was being trucked away, they knew that many of the smaller pieces would be left behind — the kind it’s easy to notice but continue past.

So, who should participate? Well, the class envisions something like what happened with the ALS ice bucket challenge — where one group or person would post a video and call out another to participate, too.

“I really see law enforcement and students taking part in this,” said Mallory Jones, also a class member.

“That’s one of the reasons why we chose the Facebook platform. And that’s something for competitors to hone in on — your video doesn’t have to have the best footage or sound to win, it just has to get the most likes. Winning the contest will also be about marketing your video online.”

The class’ own video, which features most in full Stormtrooper costumes, was filmed at Sombrero Beach. Videos should have a “Star Wars” or Stormtrooper theme.

“It was hot, but we learned the dance steps and it was all made possible by the ‘liquid coordination’ provided by our classmate Walt Stephens,” said Jones.

WILD SIDE MARATHON VETERINARY HOSPITAL IS SOUTH FLORIDA’S DESTINATION FOR EXOTIC ANIMAL CARE

Earlier in the week, Dr. Doug Mader removed a titanium plate from “Split Jaw,” a 9-foot alligator from the Everglades Outpost in Florida City. When the drill was making the gator “nervous,” Dr. Mader abandoned it in favor of loosening the screws by hand. Yes, the gator was sedated. CONTRIBUTED

t’s a rare morning that a 9-foot alligator is wheeled into a veterinary clinic for surgery. But then Marathon Veterinary Hospital isn’t an average clinic, and this patient is a familiar face. Dr. Doug Mader and his round-the-clock medical team are the Keys destination for all things furry, feathered, and in the case of the gator, manytoothed.

“Now his name’s Split Jaw. It originally was Destroyer,” said Mader. This reptile, who calls Everglades Outpost home, has returned for a third procedure on his broken jaw. The source of his recurring injuries is fighting.

“Two of them bit each other in the face.

He bit a bigger one, and the bigger one rolled and split his lower jaw. So he came in, and I fixed the lower jaw. Then, about a year later he got in another fight, and that alligator broke the side of his jaw.” Split Jaw has visible wiring in the bottom front of his jaw and a long titanium plate running along the lower left side of his mouth.

“He’s in the penalty box,” said Mader, “because he is a trouble maker.”

The three-person volunteer team from Everglades Outpost, a wildlife sanctuary in Florida City, delivered the gator Thursday morning, along with two Japanese snow macaques and a sick possum. They take methodical care with the alligator, unzipping him from his travel “body bag,” and they speak to him gently as Mader delivers a shot of the sedative Telazol.

“We aren’t just responsible for his safety, but the safety of everyone in this room,” said

Martha Frassica-Rivera, a veteran volunteer for the Outpost assisting in the transport. “He’s such a smart gator, and that’s what makes him dangerous,” she said.

This kind of relationship with a dangerous alligator is moving, especially in a summer that alligator attacks have dominated regional news.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, attacks have spiked this year at 16 — the highest since 2001. The first week in July, a diver’s arm was badly mauled by an alligator in the Charlotte County Golf Course Lake. A couple of days later, a 71–year-old woman was airlifted out of Fort Meyers after being bitten, and a week after that, a 10-year-old boy was bitten while on vacation in Acadia.

The most horrifying and heartbreaking of the summer was the story of Shizuka Matsuki, a woman walking her dogs in Davie, Florida. Matsuki was dragged into a waterway by a 12-foot alligator, while her dogs barked nearby. Emergency responders recovered Matsuki alive, but she died shortly after.

As Florida becomes more populated — not to mention polluted — human developments disturb the habitats of some 1.25 million gators that have called the land home for nearly 40 million years.

In most cases of human-alligator encounters, the alligator ends up dead. This runs counter to the attitude of the Everglades Outpost, a non-profit that offers sanctuary to animals from “illegal, traumatic, or abusive” situations. Ideally, they rehabilitate and release them into the wild, but in cases like this gator, they will keep the animal on the preserve because of its dangerous nature.

Mader has been seeing exotic patients from the Outpost for 20 years. “Not many vets are trained for alligators,” Mader said. He is triple board-certified. In addition to feline and canine training, he’s trained in primates and zoo animal medicine, and, of course, reptiles. Thursday is his “exotic day.” Mader works with “a half dozen alligator facilities in the Homestead area and on the Tamiami Trail with all the tourist mom and pop shops. They all have an alligator out by their airboat. And I take care of those alligators.”

or those who travel frequently and keep up with changes in hotel accommodations, this column may come as no surprise.

Innkeepers from the lowliest Mom & Pop to the highest-flying Flags tout that they spare no expense in assuring guest comfort. Sheets made from Egyptian cotton with thread counts in the thousands… plush bath towels with plush one-size-fits-all (hah!) terry cloth bathrobes… comfy one-size-fits-all slippers (see the last hah!), spa-quality toiletries, in-room snacks and top shelf mini-bar items… and the bane of modern hotel existence…

Rain showers.

I remember when hotels first started putting in those shower-massage multi-speed shower heads. Those are just great. If you have lived in the Florida Keys for any length of time, you understand how wonderful regular mainland water pressure can be. Add one of those special shower heads, dial in the power jets, and your entire body can be tingling when you step out of that amazing shower experience. I want the fine high-speed jets of water invigorating me with their cleansing power.

The trend in hotel bath fixtures, however, seems to be moving to the ubiquitous rain shower. The shower heads can be over twelve inches wide, and they feature these small water holes where the shower lets fall a gentle smattering of droplets that soothingly caress your skin… and I hate them.

Rain showers have worse water pressure than Florida Keys showers! And they’re designed that way on purpose! It’s just no fun standing under one of those when all you want is a shower with halfway decent water pressure.

And that brings us to another trend: in-shower dispensers of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I get that it cuts down on waste and those tiny plastic shampoo bottles. But what happened to soap? Hotels were the best places to stock up on little soaps to take home. Some of them were really nice as well — spa-quality soaps with great scents and incredible cleansing properties. Get this straight, hotels: not everyone likes liquid body wash!

Although there was this one soap often found in cheap motels and roadside lodging units: Cashmere Bouquet. Let me make this clear: this was no elite JOHN spa soap. The BARTUS scent was floral and sweet in a very is a City Council member and Vice sickly sweet way.

I think that the hotel and travel industry needs to pass some laws or standards that apply to all hotels. First, if a hotel has a rain shower, it must also have a handheld shower massage unit capable of high-velocity water jets at the barest minimum. Second, it must at least offer decent-sized bars of a decent soap, preferably in quantities sufficient to take a few home. And none of those soaps can be Cashmere Bouquet. Third, if the only scent you offer in the in-shower shampoo dispenser is coco-mango, your hotel better have a poolside or beachside tiki bar so that no one confuses your guests with a tropical cocktail or smoothie.

Legal advice at pro bono clinics

The Florida Department of Transportation informed the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office of construction-related, scheduled U.S. 1 lane closures for the following areas on Thursday, Sept. 6:

Pro bono legal assistance – hurricane related or otherwise – will be taking place for free on Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Key Largo library, on Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Marathon United Methodist Church, and on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Key West Courthouse. These are not the “town hall” style meetings that occurred after the hurricane, this is purely free legal services where if an attorney agrees to continue on with the case they are prohibited from accepting any money for their services. This program also provides funds for things like legal costs (filing fees, etc.) and assistance with obtaining financial help, like first, last and security for those being evicted.

• The northbound lane at MM 19.6 will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Drivers will be flagged around the work zones.

• One northbound lane on will be closed near MM 106 between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

• Southbound traffic will be shifted toward the median shoulder near MM 113 between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
