ll three Marathon Planning Commissioners present rejected an appeal on a variance for a home site in Little Venice Monday, Aug. 20. Jennifer Powell and seven other neighbors objected to a larger-than-allowed plan for a home on 3rd Avenue Ocean.

“Our appeal was not against stilt homes or improvements in our neighborhood. Our point is that a variance should not be granted for the sole purpose of building a bigger house,” said Powell, adding that the group has not decided yet whether it will appeal the planning board’s decision to the city council.

The planning board could only rule on whether or not the city planning department had acted within its authority, which staff assured the commission it had. According to municipal law, the city can grant a variance up to 25 percent for a variety of situations including setbacks.

In essence, the board ruling will allow Andrew George and his partners of Florida Keys Homes to build three single-family homes on three contiguous lots. Currently, there is one large home that was destroyed by Hurricane

Irma. The variance will allow the builder to construct an extra 192 square feet for each canal home, and about 100 square feet for the dry lot home. It would reduce the setback from 10 feet at the canal side of the home to 7.5 feet and the rear setback from 10 feet to 7.5 feet.

The smallest home would be 1,150 to 1,250 square feet and the two canalfront homes would be between 1,200 and 1,250 square feet. George said the engineering isn’t complete, but it will definitely be a custom concrete home.

“Everything I build is concrete. I won’t do modular homes,” he said.

“This house is not going anywhere.”

In the past 12 months, the City of Marathon has received 14 administrative variance applications. Seven setbacks and two long docks were approved. One setback at a trailer park was denied, and four are still under consideration.

In a lengthy presentation, George emphasized his connection to the neighborhood, including homeownership as well as performing work in the area.

“The (existing structure) has more than 50 percent damage. If we get the variance, we can build a small three-bedroom, two-bath house. It’s not going to be huge,” George said, estimating the two-story with parking under home to be about 1,500 square feet in total. He added that if he had to conform to the setbacks, he would be forced to build a larger house with more bedrooms that is three stories high in order to recoup his costs.

small lots and narrow streets, this was alarming to the audience in attendance.

“Should we grant the variance?

Can we, or should we?” asked neighbor Keith Bockenstette. “This is development just for profit and the threat that if we can’t build this, we’re going to build that. It needs to stay what we have now — small, usable space.

Realtor Sam Williams spoke in favor of the project.

“I want to remind everyone that the existing home was gutted by a natural disaster. Something has to be done with it. The people involved with this project live and work in this subdivision. It’s very important for us to preserve the integrity of the neighborhood.”

Commissioners Jeff Daniels, Pam Dobson and Lynn Landry voted yes.

One commissioner, Randy Lewis, has moved away and has yet to be replaced. Newly appointed member Mike Leonard was not present. Although, the property in question currently belongs to Landry’s aunt by marriage, Marathon Planning Director George Garrett said it is lawful for Landry to cast a vote.

In other news: • The planning commission approved a conditional use for Boat Works Investments on the gulfside of Marathon from 39th to 41st Streets. It would include 52 affordable units, 20 market rate units, and keep the existing 32 marina slips. The proposal was put forth by Keys Affordable Development, the same group that built the 51 affordable units on 73rd Street.

• It also approved 25 RV spaces to be developed on Dodge Lake behind the airport so long as the proper setbacks were observed.

• It also approved a conditional use permit for 8501 Overseas Highway for a retail commercial and supply yard “with outdoor storage of pilings and decking materials” for Keys Deck and Dock Supply.

• It also began the process of accepting the 300 affordable housing units gifted by the state. Changing the land use and development regulations may take up to one year.

1. For too long, Congress has avoided making tough decisions to modernize our immigration system. I’ve worked tirelessly to provide a permanent solution for young people brought to this country by no fault of their own, while also making funds available to protect the integrity of our borders. This summer, I was proud to lead the effort in the House to debate — for the first time in over 20 years — a serious comprehensive immigration bill. I won’t stop working until we have a bipartisan solution that makes Americans more secure while honoring our tradition of welcoming immigrants who want to contribute.

2. While FEMA must guarantee the integrity of reimbursements, they have to do better, considering Congress has designated billions to help communities recover.

At the federal level, bureaucracy moves slowly, which is why I’m glad my team effectively cuts through red tape on constituents’ behalf when they contact us about delays or obstacles in their dealings with agencies. I’m also grateful we passed the Disaster Relief Reform Act to provide critical reforms to more efficiently run federal programs. At the state level, Florida should take another look at advanced reimbursement rules to see if that could alleviate some of the delays.

3. Protecting water quality and Everglades restoration are not just South Florida priorities, they’re national priorities. Billions of dollars from the local, state and national economy are at risk if we don’t address these challenges before it’s too late. Leaving this issue unresolved results in a larger environmental debt to future generations.

The Florida delegation has built strong bipartisan support for the Everglades and South Florida environmental projects in the past and I will continue to promote robust funding from Congress.

1. The United States has gone from being the land of opportunity to a land where it is a free for all and those who arrive illegally seem to have more rights and advantages then the hard-working American citizens who were born here.

I for one hand refuse to use the word “undocumented” because anyone who enters the country without permission and/or enters with visa and overstays their visit is automatically illegal! No one can go to any other country in the world, overstay their visit and say they have claims to the same rights as the citizens of that country …

2. This event is very much similar to what Puerto Ricans are suffering given the Irma and Mary issues gives the bureaucracy that exists at the FEMA agency. Once elected I will endeavor to address the bureaucratic obstacles so that allocated congressional funds get to the Keys. The same is true for all the bureaucratic and obstructive practices in the national flood insurance program which is also equally culpable for failing to bring the necessary coverage to the needy families in Monroe County. At the state level I will endeavor with my state colleagues to guarantee that federal funds issued through the state are not lost …

3. The approval from the White House Office of Management and Budget, to help restore water quality south of Lake Okeechobee only address the public policy of the White House it doesn’t address the congressional obligation to allocate the necessary funds under the single constitutional duty members of congress have to pass a budget that is representative of the needs of the people.

The is a far bigger issue than just Monroe county contamination of algae in the everglades national park will destroy ecosystems that are protected under the national endangered species act, the Florida wetlands & the national park service.

1. The right leadership can address both together.

Simplifying the path to legal residency and citizenship will alleviate the pressure on the borders.

Bringing the undocumented out of the shadows will prevent their exploitation and enable them to openly contribute to our communities, economy, and our tax base. As a sovereign nation, our borders must be respected and protected. We can use new technologies to minimize costs and maximize effectiveness. As a global moral leader, our nation must treat ALL people humanely no matter the circumstances. Our highest national security priority should be a cyber firewall versus a physical wall.

2. The process for both the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants and State level Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) authorizations need to be streamlined to process claims faster and more efficiently. Once the FDEM has authorized a claim to a city or local government, a mechanism should be in place to enable FEMA to reimburse the local governments directly without having to send the funds via FDEM. The local governments, which don’t have large cash reserves, should also be authorized to claim interest on lines of credit paid while waiting for claims to be processed.

3. The Southern Reservoir project is a national treasure and resource protection priority. The increased storage capacity, treatment and movement of clean water south of Lake Okeechobee will stop the damaging discharges to the coastal estuaries. Restoring the flow of clean, fresh water to the Everglades National Park, Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys will improve the health of Lake Okeechobee, protect the drinking water for eight million Floridians living in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, protect the economic activities that thrive from having a pristine environment and healthy Everglades, and protect quality of life for future generations.

1. I would first prioritize protecting immigrants who are already part of our country, especially DREAMers, people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and all those whose lives are immediately threatened

by Trump’s policies. I would also support a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform that benefits immigrant families and ensures border security.

2. Due to a lack of hurricane preparedness at the state and federal level, local volunteers in our community in the Keys have been the ones to take on the heavy task of cleaning up our canals and streets. In Congress, I would work with local organizations to ensure we are prepared for the next storm, and I’d make sure the state and the federal government use our resources quickly and efficiently.

3. The blue-green algae bloom in Lake Okeechobee is one of the most urgent issues facing South Florida today. Our community deserves clean water, not just for the industries that depend on it but also for the health of our children. I would make sure all my colleagues in Congress understand the environmental and public health implications of their inaction, because this is a problem that needs to be solved immediately.

tate and federal officials are denying comments made by Florida Sen. Bill Nelson that “Russians are in Florida’s elections records and have already penetrated certain counties,” and they maintain there has been no election interference.

“There’s no proof,” said Monroe County Elections Supervisor Joyce Griffin, about Nelson’s quotes, which are from an Aug. 8 interview. He has since refused to elaborate or give details about where the information came from.

“I’ve talked to all these supervisors across the state,” Griffin said. “We have not been hacked, and the FBI says we have not been hacked, so if there is someone out there in the government who knows we’ve been hacked and they’re not saying who it is, then they’re part of the problem.”

Secretary of State Ken Detzner recently wrote to Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, asking for evidence, details or any prior communication to state or local election officials in Florida about Russians hacking Florida’s election system.

According to Detzner’s letter, the Department of State contacted the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the state Department of Law Enforcement to request an immediate briefing on any information, but all partners said they had no information to corroborate Nelson’s comments.

“If you, Senator Nelson or any federal agency, government official or elected official has information that verifies the ‘Russians are in Florida’s elections records,’ I urge immediate transparency and cooperation in sharing that information so that we can take action to protect our elections,” Detzner wrote to Burr.

This week, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and FBI Director Christopher Wray wrote back that although there have not been new or ongoing compromises of state or local election infrastructure, Russian government actors have previously demonstrated the intent and capability to conduct malicious cyber operations.

“Working with members of the election community, we will continue to prioritize conducting assessments of cyber security risk; addressing vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious actors; hardening systems for future elections; and planning for incident response,” the letter says. “We are focused on assisting election officials with securing their systems for the 2018 midterms and ensuring Floridians can have confidence that when they visit the polls, their vote will be counted, and counted correctly.”

Fishermen’s almost ready for inpatient services

I

npatient services will begin soon at Fishermen’s Community Hospital, pending the completion of two parts of the modular facility at MM 49 oceanside.

Brian Keeley, president and CEO of Baptist Health South Florida, went on a tour of the modular with Rick Freeburg, Fishermen’s CEO, and Joe Natoli, Baptist vice president and chief administrative officer, on Aug. 19.

It was their first peek inside the temporary facility, which opened July 23.

Workers have been hauling debris out of the old hospital building, which Baptist bought a year ago, before Hurricane Irma destroyed it.

In its place, a 40,000-square-foot hospital will be built at a cost of $40 million.

“The facility looks good,” Natoli said of the 8,000-square-foot modular hospital, which will serve patients over the next two years. It has an emergency room, lab, pharmacy and respiratory services along with services like X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds and echocardiograms.

“We’re here to serve the community and we’re going to move as rapidly as we can to demolish the old building,” Natoli said.

Soon, the land around the modular facility will be landscaped, with added signs.

Once the final two parts of the modular are finished, they will include four outpatient rooms and a cafeteria.

Construction of the new hospital is anticipated to start in 2019. By Thanksgiving, design plans could be in the works, according to Jay Hershoff, chairman of the Mariners and Fishermen’s Hospital Foundations.

“The only thing I want to say is that Baptist and the board really thanks the community for the support they’ve given us and for becoming our partners and investing in this new hospital,” he said. “We have some wonderful citizens and we thank them for becoming our partners and investing in their community.”

our out of five Marathon City Council members approved a Coco Plum housing project in the works at their recent meeting, but not without controversy.

For more than an hour, the council heard from developer Brian Schmitt and Coco Plum residents, some of them angry, about the 64unit affordable housing development to be named Seaview Commons.

Schmitt is working with Boynton Beach-based developer NuRock Companies and wants to level four buildings on Avenue D (currently housing 15 efficiencies) along with a stretch of trees buffering a canal.

Pending the availability of affordable housing allocations and Florida Housing Finance Corporation approval, seven elevated buildings containing 64 two-bedroom, twobathroom units will go up.

All of the residents currently living in the efficiencies will have the opportunity to live in the new apartments.

“All 15 residents would like to remain in the new development. So unlike what you may hear, we’re not bringing in a new quality or class of resident,” Schmitt told the council.

“They’re already here on Coco Plum and they want to stay.”

Forty-five percent of the units will be rented for less than $1,000 per month, while the rest will be rented for around $1,382, Schmitt said.

“Not in our backyard” was the underlying theme for many speakers.

Proponents of the project said it’s

not fair or legal to discriminate against potential Seaview tenants.

The first public speaker, James McGee, presented the council and public with a stack of 959 pieces of paper, claiming it represented crime reports over one year from affordable housing.

He also said NuRock has a bad reputation for managing properties, according to reviews he read online.

In response, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said, “That’s not 959 pages of crime. That’s calls – most of them non-criminal. In regard to criminal calls, we do not see a direct correlation between someone living in these areas vs. crimes.”

The Eastwind Apartments complex at 240 Sombrero Road is a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) complex with 130 units.

“Solely on crime calls, burglary or theft, over a 12-month period there were eight reports of potential criminal activity there,” Ramsay said. “There are lots of people who have tons of money and commit crimes. It’s hard to stereotype.”

After resident complaints about increased traffic because of the potential housing development, Schmitt said, “We are on board to landscape the city right of way between the property line and the bike path and participate and cooperate with whatever the city proposes, relative to improvements on the curve.”

Affordable housing is the number one platform issue for every candidate running for office, and the fact that Keys workers have a hard time finding housing makes things worse for businesses, Schmitt said.

“Most businesses are 20 to 25 percent off in 2018 as a result of Hurricane Irma and in 2019, the need for housing will be even more acute than it is today,” he said.

Councilman Dan Zieg opposed the project.

I think I write more about what’s happening with our world these days because it’s fairly dire, but thank God sex and romance are still in there, too.

Your lyrics and music are deeper, more bluesy mixed with rock and roll on the album “The Snake King” … how did that evolve? Looking at the news and the state of our planet; I was in blues bands as a kid and it’s always been my go-to jam music, so it’s kind of natural, though it may catch some fans by surprise.

Are people surprised at how multi-talented you are? You are not just a singer, an actor, but also a writer. What motivates all the creativity? Fear. Just kidding. I don’t know … it’s just stuff I enjoy doing. It’s all my hobbies.

What writers do you enjoy? What’s on your nightstand? I’m reading three books at the moment “Pet Sematary,” “Factfulness” and “The Fatal Shore.” I love sci-fi mainly, but read everything. You can’t be a writer if you don’t read.

Just waiting for the gods to say, “Okay, NOW!” You have been brutally honest about depression. Did you realize how important it would be to talk about it publicly? No, I didn’t realize the stigma attached to it for many people. I’ve always been pretty honest about my depression. It helps people to understand why I can be a jerk sometimes and a good guy at other moments. I thought everyone would be interested in the wild rock and roll sex in my autobiography but the stuff about my depression is what caught people’s attention. I’m glad that it serves some other purpose than prurient interest.

Letting the public get to know you better — how has that affected your creativity? I’ve always been honest in my songs so that hasn’t stopped with prose writing. Oscar Hammerstein said, “Write what you know,” and I know myself pretty damn well.

What’s one of your favorite things you ever created, acted, wrote or sang that makes you proud or was a great memory?

Well, “Jessie’s Girl” came out of nowhere so that was kind of a magic moment. I was an unknown musician one day and then happened to write the right song, I guess, and the next day was different.

On a humorous note, do you think about all the girls who date “Jessies” and most likely at some point, got serenaded by your song? I’ve met a LOT. A guy will come up and say, “Hi. My name is Jesse,” and I’ll be like, “Ok, sorry dude.”

Jay Thomas Glover, 56, a long-time resident of Marathon, passed away on Aug. 14, 2018 at the University of Miami Hospital. Jay will be forever remembered for his infectious laughter that could lighten any room, for the stories he loved to tell and the lessons we have learned from him. He was a caring and devoted man to his family, friends and community.

Jay worked for more than 13 years at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as a homicide detective. He was a Past Master of Marathon Lodge, Past District Deputy Grand Master of District 36 and a longtime member of the Marathon Shrine Club. Glover was a leader in the Keys Masonic community who was very well thought of and loved by his brethren. Jay was recognized as Florida’s Mason of the Year in 1998 in response to his efforts following Hurricane Georges, a storm that affected the Middle and Lower Keys.

He worked tireless hours at the Wesley House Family Services to ensure the families of our community could get the help they needed.

His smile will be greatly missed throughout our community but remembered through those he left behind: his loving wife Angela Glover, his two beautiful daughters Krystal and Rachel, and his two grandsons Ethan and Elijah.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Kirk of the Keys Church in Marathon, followed by a Masonic Graveside Service at the Key West City Cemetery at 5:30 p.m. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

SIGH-T OF RELIEF Canal cleanup has begun KATIE ATKINS

B

y the time Monroe County canals are cleared of storm debris, it will have been more than a year and a half since Hurricane Irma’s roar on the shore.

Contractors have 222 days to bring it all back to the surface, and the clock started ticking Aug. 17 at Key by the Sea in Marathon.

Entire households, and everything that was inside them, have had nearly a year to settle on canal floors, with the Key by the Sea canal being one of the worst countywide.

It’ll take through March 2019 before the waterlogged debris is gone.

“This canal here could take up to one month,” said Christopher Colarusso, president of Adventure Environmental Inc., lead contractor on the multi-million dollar cleanup project with Monroe County.

He and county officials kicked off the cleanup with a small — albeit smelly — ceremony, Friday.

Colarusso said each morning, divers check the canal water for wildlife, like manatees.

“We locate the manatees, then basically swim them out of the canal, shush them out. Then, once all the manatees swim out we have a manatee observer waiting to make sure they don’t come back in,” Colarusso said.

Six crews on 15 barges throughout the Keys will continue cleaning for the next seven months. Adven-

ture was the No. 1 ranked vendor, and cleaned Keys canals after Hurricane Georges and Hurricane Mitch in 1998. It also did much of the damaged-vessel removal work in the Keys after Hurricane Irma.

The county is using a grant of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program.

It’s divided into $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe, $7.5 million for Marathon and $6.5 million for Islamorada. Work will finally begin in August.

The grant requires the work be done in 222 days. Debris will be moved, some of it trucked and some by barge, to different staging areas, and trucked to a landfill.

Failed cleanup efforts by statehired DRC Environmental Services, which pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project, have resumed under Adventure with help from subcontractors including ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier, Arnolds Towing and Salvage of Stock Island and Tetra Tech Inc., a nonlocal commercial diving company.

“We have multiple layers of debris to clear. Every morning we have divers in the canals to determine what’s in there. In the end, everything will come out,” Colarusso said.

WHO IS FUNDING SCHOOL SAFETY?

Tax question on the ballot is especially important to Keys charter schools

E

very single child in a Keys public school — including charter schools — saw a police officer on the first day of school. It will cost the Monroe County School District almost $2 million to comply with the state-mandated Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act that requires a School Resource Officer (SRO) or a School Safety Officer (SSO) to be stationed at each campus.

Up until just a few weeks ago, it was unclear who would be paying for the resource officers located at charter schools. Statewide, some school districts argued that because charter schools receive separate Safe Schools funding it should be the responsibility of the charter. But in Monroe County, the district opted to pay for all of them — charters and traditional public schools — and fingers are crossed that voters will approve the ad valorem tax of up to .0625 mill. (See sidebar.)

“Everyone (each school) will have to take the hit if this tax doesn’t pass,” said Superintendent Mark Porter. “All the revenue to pay for this program has to come from us, or every man on his own.”

The Monroe County School District will receive a $700,000 allocation of the $162 million distributed statewide. But when divided per student, that means some charter schools would receive about $8,000. The cost of one officer per year — including benefits and equipment — is expected to be about $100,000.

“Eight thousand doesn’t buy anything,” said Cathy Hoffman, executive director of the Big Pine Academy, with 88 students. “So it’s a big relief to me (that the district is paying for now).”

Treasure Village Montessori Principal Kelly Mangel said it was touch and go until just before the start of the school year.

“I was scheduling a meeting to make the hard decision, cut back hours or curriculum,” she said. “I was also

considering the ramifications of what would happen if I didn’t hire an officer.”

But what are the consequences if the schools cannot pay for an officer?

“It is an underfunded state mandate with no significant consequence except being a PR nightmare,” said District Superintendent Mark Porter, who added that the state also isn’t providing much technical assistance with this situation. “The governor did this without considering the financial impact.”

The school district or its employees cannot publicly campaign on the vote, but Porter stressed, “We’re back scrambling if this doesn’t pass.”

“Honestly, the first days, officers exceeded my expectations and were very supportive with the kids,” said May Sands Montessori Principal Lynn Barras. But she’s worried about continued funding and who is responsible — the state, the district or the individual schools.

School District Finance Director James Drake said there is money in the current budget to cover the SRO costs … for the meantime.

“If the tax passes, we will start collecting the money in November of this year. We usually ‘float’ the first 3.5 months of the year,” he said, citing the school’s fiscal year start and end dates.

Both the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Key West Police Department have signed contracts with the school district to provide services.

REFERENDUM Titled “Increased Security Funding for Monroe County Schools,” the measure seeks to raise ad valorem taxes up to .0625 mils. State legislators passed House Bill 7026 in the aftermath of the tragic Parkland School shooting in Broward County. The law requires every school district in Florida to hire school resource officers and school safety officers. The tax levy is designed to raise no more than $1.5 million per year. School officials purposely included the “up to” language so as to levy only enough tax to pay for the gap between what’s provided by the state and the actual cost of the school security.

The school district is proposing an ad valorem tax of 3.37 mills in total. (The budget has yet to be approved.) A nonhomesteaded home valued at $500,000 would pay about $1,600 in school taxes — or about $42.28 more than last year to cover the security.

MCSO will handle nine schools — six traditional and three charters with a staff of nine officers, plus two sergeants and one executive director. Each school has a dedicated officer, with enough overlap to provide for vacation days, for example. KWPD has five full-time officers to cover the five Key West schools, and will hire off-duty officers to work shifts at two charter schools — May Sands Montessori and Key West Collegiate. The school district will pay the MCSO $1 million per year and the KWPD a little under $700,000.

“We are still trying to find a way to fund the whole year and if the tax for funding is not passed on Aug. 28, I don’t know what we will do,” said Barras. With operating costs at $1 million a year, May Sands already has to fund-raise $100,000 or 10 percent for enrichment programs such as art and music and extra teachers. In order to pay for the SSO this year, the school cut one full-time salaried employee and the enrichment programs.

Florida schools have three options when it comes to providing security under the new law — SROs on loan from a traditional law enforcement agency, SSOs which could be sort of a schoolbased police force, or the Guardian Program, which trains and arms staff.

On Aug. 21, the Office of the Governor announced an extra $58 million to be distributed statewide — the remainder of the $67 million in unclaimed funds to support the Guardian Program which trains and arms volunteer staff.

From the start, Monroe County schools were dead set against the Guardian Program, said Porter.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay said it was a last-minute scramble to get all of his officers in place.

“The funding was in limbo and nobody really stood up and came up with the money,” Ramsay said. “The MCSO is not a funding source, but we were onboard with the whole program. The district elected to use our services and we, in turn, assume all of the liability and exposure.”

mped-up efforts to find the source of a coral disease that has been spreading through South Florida reefs for the last four years have been fruitless, and it’s getting worse.

Sarah Fangman, superintendent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, told Monroe County commissioners at their meeting last week that the now-named stony coral tissue loss disease is showing “rapid progression and high rates of mortality” among Florida Keys corals.

It’s the same disease reported by the Weekly in May, when it did not yet have a name.

“We’re not seeing any evidence of it slowing down. Typically, outbreaks do not last this long and it is unfortunately continuing to move down our reef tract and is off Looe Key,” Fangman said.

There are 216 miles of reef in the sanctuary, and the reef is as important ecologically as it is economically, Fangman said, adding that it provides 70,000 jobs and $6.4 billion in sales income in South Florida.

Back in late 2014, coral disease incidents were reported near Key Biscayne by staff of the state Department of Environmental Protection and area scientists. In a year’s time, nearly 55 linear miles of reef experienced widespread disease, according to the environmental agency. By 2016-17, the disease continued to spread as far north as Palm Beach County and south to Lower Matecumbe.

“Corals are animals and, like humans, they experience disease,” Fangman said. “Right now, we’re seeing a very considerable increase in the number of species experiencing disease and almost half of the species on our reef tract are susceptible to stony coral tissue loss disease.”

Big Mama, a large coral head that lived for more than 300 years near Fort Lauderdale, succumbed to the disease in just four months.

“It’s very concerning because these corals are the ones that have survived every other stress before. We’re losing some of the really important and resilient corals and their genetic contribution to the population,” she said.

Only stony corals are affected by the disease.

A sizable effort has been ongoing to find the source of the disease, which appears as a white circle around diseased tissue in the center. The whitening that happens with this particular disease is actually coral tissue dying, not to be confused with bleaching, which is caused by photosynthetic algae leaving the coral.

Commissioners were alarmed by Fangman’s presentation and agreed the sanctuary should seek help from the Tourism Development Council to bring in worldwide interest and help.

The sanctuary is working with Florida Department of Environmental Protection and dozens of partners in taking a multi-faceted approach.

“It is an aggressive, coordinated response to identify the pathogen and experiment with a variety of management strategies to combat it,” Fangman said.

“This is very alarming and I think it’s imperative for us to make sure that our contacts with our representatives in Washington understand the potential ramifications of something like this,” said Commissioner George Neugent.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education to me means that you pursue something that you love and never give up on it no matter what. If you do study something you aren’t interested in, either for the money, or comfort, you’ll always regret it.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? I think the dumbest rule at school is the no hoodie rule; it sucks because I love wearing hoodies.

The best rule is that we’re allowed to leave for lunch.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? How much responsibility you need to have for yourself; you need to be in charge of you and do your work, no ones gonna do it for you.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I’m part of NHS (National Honor Society), Relay for Life (if it happens this year) and two sports teams, soccer and tennis. These clubs and sports are very important to me because it’s where I made most of my close friends today and it’s taught how me how to be a leader and a good teammate.

What are your plans after high school? After high school I plan on attending college and heading down the medical path. I’m hoping to become an optometrist in the future.
