Michael Gieda said a mixed-use facility would be great for the community. “Museums like children’s, maritime, and the Bahamas-Keys connection, a rental venue, a conference/meeting room, restaurant/café space and a space for entities like Bahama Village Music Program would be perfect for the space,” he said.

As an advocate of the arts, Cricket Desmarais would like to see a few options considered highlighting the history of Key West. “Most poignant to me would be celebrating the building’s neighboring Bahama Village culture and history, perhaps an interactive museum honoring Junkanoo, jazz, gospel, blues, reggae, funk, calypso, and hip-hop,” she said, honoring some of the local homegrown talents and housing workshop space and a home for Bahama Village Music Program.

Bob Bowersox said a one-stop, all-encompassing, Hall of Fame-like shop that addresses the history of the island would be appropriate.

“Something that gives a little taste of everything from the pirates to the Atocha to Captain Tony to the powerboats to the theater and arts and the songwriters,” he said. “Something that shows off all the people and history that makes Key West.”

Todd German is a fan of an Offshore Powerboat museum since the competitions have been happening in the Keys since the 1960s.

“What Indy and Daytona are to car racing, Key West is to Powerboats,” he said. “If this group can come up with the funding to restore and operate a building which has been neglected for 50 years, they should certainly be given an opportunity to make their case.”

“I think it would be great as a combined museum and event space, similar to the Straw Market in Charleston, S.C.,” said Kristen Winters, who thinks the proximity to Truman Waterfront is a great advantage.

tate and federal officials are denying comments made by Florida Sen. Bill Nelson that “Russians are in Florida’s elections records and have already penetrated certain counties,” and they maintain there has been no election interference.

“There’s no proof,” said Monroe County Elections Supervisor Joyce Griffin, about Nelson’s quotes, which are from an Aug. 8 interview. He has since refused to elaborate or give details about where the information came from.

“I’ve talked to all these supervisors across the state,” Griffin said. “We have not been hacked, and the FBI says we have not been hacked, so if there is someone out there in the government who knows we’ve been hacked and they’re not saying who it is, then they’re part of the problem.”

Secretary of State Ken Detzner recently wrote to Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, asking for evidence, details or any prior communication to state or local election officials in Florida about Russians hacking Florida’s election system.

According to Detzner’s letter, the Department of State contacted the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the state Department of Law Enforcement to request an immediate briefing on any information, but all partners said they had no information to corroborate Nelson’s comments.

“If you, Senator Nelson or any federal agency, government official or elected official has information that verifies the ‘Russians are in Florida’s elections records,’ I urge immediate transparency and cooperation in sharing that information so that we can take action to protect our elections,” Detzner wrote to Burr.

This week, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and FBI Director Christopher Wray wrote back that although there have not been new or ongoing compromises of state or local election infrastructure, Russian government actors have previously demonstrated the intent and capability to conduct malicious cyber operations.

“Working with members of the election community, we will continue to prioritize conducting assessments of cyber security risk; addressing vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious actors; hardening systems for future elections; and planning for incident response,” the letter says.

“We are focused on assisting election officials with securing their systems for the 2018 midterms and ensuring Floridians can have confidence that when they visit the polls, their vote will be counted, and counted correctly.”

1. For too long, Congress has avoided making tough decisions to modernize our immigration system. I’ve worked tirelessly to provide a permanent solution for young people brought to this country by no fault of their own, while also making funds available to protect the integrity of our borders. This summer, I was proud to lead the effort in the House to debate — for the first time in over 20 years — a serious comprehensive immigration bill. I won’t stop working until we have a bipartisan solution that makes Americans more secure while honoring our tradition of welcoming immigrants who want to contribute.

2. While FEMA must guarantee the integrity of reimbursements, they have to do better, considering Congress has designated billions to help communities recover.

At the federal level, bureaucracy moves slowly, which is why I’m glad my team effectively cuts through red tape on constituents’ behalf when they contact us about delays or obstacles in their dealings with agencies. I’m also grateful we passed the Disaster Relief Reform Act to provide critical reforms to more efficiently run federal programs. At the state level, Florida should take another look at advanced reimbursement rules to see if that could alleviate some of the delays.

3. Protecting water quality and Everglades restoration are not just South Florida priorities, they’re national priorities. Billions of dollars from the local, state and national economy are at risk if we don’t address these challenges before it’s too late. Leaving this issue unresolved results in a larger environmental debt to future generations.

The Florida delegation has built strong bipartisan support for the Everglades and South Florida environmental projects in the past and I will continue to promote robust funding from Congress.

1. The United States has gone from being the land of opportunity to a land where it is a free for all and those who arrive illegally seem to have more rights and advantages then the hard-working American citizens who were born here.

I for one hand refuse to use the word “undocumented” because anyone who enters the country without permission and/or enters with visa and overstays their visit is automatically illegal! No one can go to any other country in the world, overstay their visit and say they have claims to the same rights as the citizens of that country …

2. This event is very much similar to what Puerto Ricans are suffering given the Irma and Mary issues gives the bureaucracy that exists at the FEMA agency. Once elected I will endeavor to address the bureaucratic obstacles so that allocated congressional funds get to the Keys. The same is true for all the bureaucratic and obstructive practices in the national flood insurance program which is also equally culpable for failing to bring the necessary coverage to the needy families in Monroe County. At the state level I will endeavor with my state colleagues to guarantee that federal funds issued through the state are not lost …

The approval from the White House Office of Management and Budget, to help restore water quality south of Lake Okeechobee only address the public policy of the White House it doesn’t address the congressional obligation to allocate the necessary funds under the single constitutional duty members of congress have to pass a budget that is representative of the needs of the people.

The is a far bigger issue than just Monroe county contamination of algae in the everglades national park will destroy ecosystems that are protected under the national endangered species act, the Florida wetlands & the national park service.

1. The right leadership can address both together.

Simplifying the path to legal residency and citizenship will alleviate the pressure on the borders.

Bringing the undocumented out of the shadows will prevent their exploitation and enable them to openly contribute to our communities, economy, and our tax base. As a sovereign nation, our borders must be respected and protected. We can use new technologies to minimize costs and maximize effectiveness. As a global moral leader, our nation must treat ALL people humanely no matter the circumstances. Our highest national security priority should be a cyber firewall versus a physical wall.

2. The process for both the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants and State level Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) authorizations need to be streamlined to process claims faster and more efficiently. Once the FDEM has authorized a claim to a city or local government, a mechanism should be in place to enable FEMA to reimburse the local governments directly without having to send the funds via FDEM. The local governments, which don’t have large cash reserves, should also be authorized to claim interest on lines of credit paid while waiting for claims to be processed.

3. The Southern Reservoir project is a national treasure and resource protection priority. The increased storage capacity, treatment and movement of clean water south of Lake Okeechobee will stop the damaging discharges to the coastal estuaries. Restoring the flow of clean, fresh water to the Everglades National Park, Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys will improve the health of Lake Okeechobee, protect the drinking water for eight million Floridians living in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, protect the economic activities that thrive from having a pristine environment and healthy Everglades, and protect quality of life for future generations.

1. I would first prioritize protecting immigrants who are already part of our country, especially DREAMers, people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and all those whose lives are immediately threatened

by Trump’s policies. I would also support a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform that benefits immigrant families and ensures border security.

2. Due to a lack of hurricane preparedness at the state and federal level, local volunteers in our community in the Keys have been the ones to take on the heavy task of cleaning up our canals and streets. In Congress, I would work with local organizations to ensure we are prepared for the next storm, and I’d make sure the state and the federal government use our resources quickly and efficiently.

3. The blue-green algae bloom in Lake Okeechobee is one of the most urgent issues facing South Florida today. Our community deserves clean water, not just for the industries that depend on it but also for the health of our children. I would make sure all my colleagues in Congress understand the environmental and public health implications of their inaction, because this is a problem that needs to be solved immediately.

oming off a back-to-back Bubba win at this year’s Key West People’s Choice Awards for Best Real Estate Office in Key West, Will Langley was ecstatic, in his thick North Carolina twang.

After graduating from North Carolina State University with degrees in tourism management and political science, he knew where he wanted to call home and it had to be by the water. “I came to the Keys often as a kid and spent many summers here with family and always knew where I wanted to be ‘one day,’” he said, adding he made Key West his permanent home in 2008.

Now, the principal broker of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Knight & Gardner Realty, he also sits on the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) board and is president of the Key West Realtors Association. After Hurricane Irma, CFFK raised and granted more than $1 million to local non-profits across all different sectors. “CFFK is all about the potential, power and possibility of our entire community,” he said. “I love what the good work of CFFK does for so many people across so many organizations.”

As part of the real estate community, he loves championing affordable housing, green energy, and keeping accurate data for consumers.

At home, his partner Erika Stokes is “the best second grade teacher in the world,” who just started the 2018-2019 school year.

And Cruzan Doodle Langley is a very popular “puppy celebrity” on social media.

A fun fact about you? I lived in Aruba for two years and owned a party boat.

How did you go from party boat captain to principal broker?

That’s a long story, but involved a little bit of luck, a lot of hard work, and great people around me.

What’s the most rewarding real estate project you’ve worked on?

The Landmark projects on the front page of your paper are nice, but there is nothing better than working with local entrepreneurs to find them the perfect space for their business.

What does success look like? Respect, integrity and lots of friends.

Favorite memory of the late Ed Knight, who founded your real estate company? Dinner parties at his house were the best.

What was your first job? Will’s Lawn Service. I cut enough grass as a kid to buy my first Boston Whaler when I was 12.

When you’re at work, what are you really wishing you were doing? Selling more real estate. OK, fine … boating to Snipes or Boca Grande.

Local favorite reopens with revamp

T

he Little Pearl, a neighborhood fish house and wine bar with a burgeoning local following, will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 28 after a brief hiatus.

Owners Tommy Quartararo, Kristen Onderdonk, and John Inglesby had a challenging first year at the eatery considering 2017’s hurricane season.

After Hurricane Irma, the restaurant was closed for three months for repairs. Undaunted, the new kid on the culinary block has been a much-talked-about addition to the Key West restaurant scene. “I don’t think I imagined it would be as embraced as it has been,” Chef Inglesby says. Inglesby describes the motivation behind the food at the new American restaurant with Asian and French influences: “It’s innovative; we’re pushing the bar for Key West, and we’re trying to stay ahead of the norm in town.”

Pearl put itself on the map with new twists on regional favorites. Inglesby’s “Bangkok Octopus,” a fork-tender octopus tentacle in an addictive sticky glaze with crunchy

herbs and mung beans, bests octopus offerings commonly featured on Keys menus.

That’s why epicureans have taken note of the neighborhood gem.

He says, “We’ve had a great local following from the beginning, and it hasn’t dropped off. We have locals bringing in big parties. … It’s fantastic.”

For that reason, Inglesby and partners decided to shutter briefly to update the interior and retool the menu. “We are debuting a few new menu items to keep people interested in the dishes. There are a lot of people that are frequent diners, so I want to keep them on the edge of their seats.”

This year, the focus of the late summer closure proves much less daunting than last year’s.

“We’re only closed for a week, and basically we’re redoing the interior to sound proof and replace some installations.” The interior is clean and classic, with nautical touches and exposed wood beams. The menu is reflective of the same maritime influences.

“We’re getting some of the best seafood in town,” says Inglesby, who regularly posts photos of fresh seafood offerings on Insta-

gram to keep the Pearl’s followers engaged.

“I’m using my resources with great fishermen, and we’re trying to source as much as we can locally. We recently got some Waygu beef from Florida. We’re just working to be as regional as possible.”

Any sneak peeks of the new menu?

Inglesby offers one teaser: “I’m going to do jumbo prawns on the new menu. It will be a beautiful Caribbean spiced prawn with tamarind glaze and aguachile,” an element described as a Latin American “fire water.”

“This dish—all the food—is driven by the flavors, and they create this umami bomb in your mouth. Your music became iconic in the ’80s; how has it evolved? What music/bands/ musicians influence your music now? Everything influences music. Trends, news, personal stuff, friends, enemies, new music, old music.

I think I write more about what’s happening with our world these days because it’s fairly dire, but thank God sex and romance are still in there, too.

Your lyrics and music are deeper, more bluesy mixed with rock and roll on the album “The Snake King” … how did that evolve? Looking at the news and the state of our planet; I was in blues bands as a kid and it’s always been my go-to jam music, so it’s kind of natural, though it may catch some fans by surprise.

Are people surprised at how multi-talented you are? You are not just a singer, an actor, but also a writer. What motivates all the creativity? Fear. Just kidding. I don’t know … it’s just stuff I enjoy doing. It’s all my hobbies.

What writers do you enjoy? What’s on your nightstand? I’m reading three books at the moment “Pet Sematary,” “Factfulness” and “The Fatal Shore.” I love sci-fi mainly, but read everything. You can’t be a writer if you don’t read.

Just waiting for the gods to say, “Okay, NOW!” You have been brutally honest about depression. Did you realize how important it would be to talk about it publicly? No, I didn’t realize the stigma attached to it for many people. I’ve always been pretty honest about my depression. It helps people to understand why I can be a jerk sometimes and a good guy at other moments. I thought everyone would be interested in the wild rock and roll sex in my autobiography but the stuff about my depression is what caught people’s attention. I’m glad that it serves some other purpose than prurient interest.

Letting the public get to know you better — how has that affected your creativity? I’ve always been honest in my songs so that hasn’t stopped with prose writing. Oscar Hammerstein said, “Write what you know,” and I know myself pretty damn well.

What’s one of your favorite things you ever created, acted, wrote or sang that makes you proud or was a great memory?

Well, “Jessie’s Girl” came out of nowhere so that was kind of a magic moment. I was an unknown musician one day and then happened to write the right song, I guess, and the next day was different.

On a humorous note, do you think about all the girls who date “Jessies” and most likely at some point, got serenaded by your song? I’ve met a LOT. A guy will come up and say, “Hi. My name is Jesse,” and I’ll be like, “Ok, sorry dude.”

WHO IS FUNDING SCHOOL SAFETY?

Tax question on the ballot is especially important to Keys charter schools

E

very single child in a Keys public school — including charter schools — saw a police officer on the first day of school. It will cost the Monroe County School District almost $2 million to comply with the state-mandated Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act that requires a School Resource Officer (SRO) or a School Safety Officer (SSO) to be stationed at each campus.

Up until just a few weeks ago, it was unclear who would be paying for the resource officers located at charter schools. Statewide, some school districts argued that because charter schools receive separate Safe Schools funding it should be the responsibility of the charter. But in Monroe County, the district opted to pay for all of them — charters and traditional public schools — and fingers are crossed that voters will approve the ad valorem tax of up to .0625 mill. (See sidebar.)

“Everyone (each school) will have to take the hit if this tax doesn’t pass,” said Superintendent Mark Porter. “All the revenue to pay for this program has to come from us, or every man on his own.”

The Monroe County School District will receive a $700,000 allocation of the $162 million distributed statewide. But when divided per student, that means some charter schools would receive about $8,000. The cost of one officer per year — including benefits and equipment — is expected to be about $100,000.

“Eight thousand doesn’t buy anything,” said Cathy Hoffman, executive director of the Big Pine Academy, with 88 students. “So it’s a big relief to me (that the district is paying for now).”

Treasure Village Montessori Principal Kelly Mangel said it was touch and go until just before the start of the school year.

“I was scheduling a meeting to make the hard decision, cut back hours or curriculum,” she said. “I was also

considering the ramifications of what would happen if I didn’t hire an officer.”

But what are the consequences if the schools cannot pay for an officer?

“It is an underfunded state mandate with no significant consequence except being a PR nightmare,” said District Superintendent Mark Porter, who added that the state also isn’t providing much technical assistance with this situation. “The governor did this without considering the financial impact.”

The school district or its employees cannot publicly campaign on the vote, but Porter stressed, “We’re back scrambling if this doesn’t pass.”

“Honestly, the first days, officers exceeded my expectations and were very supportive with the kids,” said May Sands Montessori Principal Lynn Barras. But she’s worried about continued funding and who is responsible — the state, the district or the individual schools.

School District Finance Director James Drake said there is money in the current budget to cover the SRO costs … for the meantime.

“If the tax passes, we will start collecting the money in November of this year. We usually ‘float’ the first 3.5 months of the year,” he said, citing the school’s fiscal year start and end dates.

Both the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Key West Police Department have signed contracts with the school district to provide services.

REFERENDUM Titled “Increased Security Funding for Monroe County Schools,” the measure seeks to raise ad valorem taxes up to .0625 mils. State legislators passed House Bill 7026 in the aftermath of the tragic Parkland School shooting in Broward County. The law requires every school district in Florida to hire school resource officers and school safety officers. The tax levy is designed to raise no more than $1.5 million per year. School officials purposely included the “up to” language so as to levy only enough tax to pay for the gap between what’s provided by the state and the actual cost of the school security.

The school district is proposing an ad valorem tax of 3.37 mills in total. (The budget has yet to be approved.) A nonhomesteaded home valued at $500,000 would pay about $1,600 in school taxes — or about $42.28 more than last year to cover the security.

MCSO will handle nine schools — six traditional and three charters with a staff of nine officers, plus two sergeants and one executive director. Each school has a dedicated officer, with enough overlap to provide for vacation days, for example. KWPD has five full-time officers to cover the five Key West schools, and will hire off-duty officers to work shifts at two charter schools — May Sands Montessori and Key West Collegiate. The school district will pay the MCSO $1 million per year and the KWPD a little under $700,000.

“We are still trying to find a way to fund the whole year and if the tax for funding is not passed on Aug. 28, I don’t know what we will do,” said Barras. With operating costs at $1 million a year, May Sands already has to fund-raise $100,000 or 10 percent for enrichment programs such as art and music and extra teachers. In order to pay for the SSO this year, the school cut one full-time salaried employee and the enrichment programs.

Florida schools have three options when it comes to providing security under the new law — SROs on loan from a traditional law enforcement agency, SSOs which could be sort of a schoolbased police force, or the Guardian Program, which trains and arms staff.

On Aug. 21, the Office of the Governor announced an extra $58 million to be distributed statewide — the remainder of the $67 million in unclaimed funds to support the Guardian Program which trains and arms volunteer staff.

From the start, Monroe County schools were dead set against the Guardian Program, said Porter.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay said it was a last-minute scramble to get all of his officers in place.

“The funding was in limbo and nobody really stood up and came up with the money,” Ramsay said. “The MCSO is not a funding source, but we were onboard with the whole program. The district elected to use our services and we, in turn, assume all of the liability and exposure.”

CANAL CLEANUP HAS BEGUN

B

y the time Monroe County canals are cleared of storm debris, it will have been more than a year and a half since Hurricane Irma’s roar on the shore.

Contractors have 222 days to bring it all back to the surface, and the clock started ticking Aug. 17.

“We are operating six different sites simultaneously,” said Chris Colarusso, president of Adventure Environmental Inc., lead contractor on the multi-million dollar cleanup project with Monroe County.

On Big Pine Key, cleanup has started in Avenues D and E. Other sites are on Summerland and Geiger keys, Marathon and Lower Matecumbe. In the Middle Keys, a kickoff event was held with local officials Friday.

It’ll take through March 2019 before the waterlogged debris is gone.

Colarusso said each morning, divers check the canal water for wildlife, like manatees.

“We locate the manatees, then basically swim them out of the canal, shush them out.

Then, once all the manatees swim out we have a manatee observer waiting to make sure they don’t come back in,” Colarusso said.

Six crews on 15 barges throughout the Keys will continue cleaning for the next seven months. Adventure was the No. 1 ranked vendor, and cleaned Keys canals after Hurricane Georges and Hurricane Mitch in 1998. It also did much of the damaged-vessel removal work in the Keys after Hurricane Irma.

The county is using a grant of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program.

It’s divided into $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe, $7.5 million for Marathon and $6.5 million for Islamorada. Work will finally begin in August.

The grant requires the work be done in 222 days. Debris will be moved, some of it trucked and some by barge, to different staging areas, and trucked to a landfill.

Failed cleanup efforts by state-hired DRC Environmental Services, which pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project, have resumed under Adventure with help from subcontractors including ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier, Arnolds Towing and Salvage of Stock Island and Tetra Tech Inc., a non-local commercial diving company.

“We have multiple layers of debris to clear.

Every morning we have divers in the canals to determine what’s in there. In the end, everything will come out,” Colarusso said.

arning: this story is intended to make readers feel guilty, inspired and motivated.

Kids really do come first, absolutely no argument, so when Cheryl Cates, wife of the mayor of Key West, put up a simple Facebook post asking for children’s shoes, the response was tremendous.

It’s a hard reality for the Keys but there are more than 600 homeless families from Key West to Key Largo. Kids lack the basics in order to start school, such as a simple pair of shoes. The organization Kids Come First is a Facebook page run

by Roxanne Possda whose mission it is to gather all sorts of donations, from clothing to shoes to toiletries, and get them to district schools.

Every year they manage to gather hundreds of shoes for needy kids, and it can’t be said enough, kids come first.

“Roxanne is a saint, like a oneman band,” said Cates, who is on the board of Kids Come First. Cates has helped collect items for years and she, as well as the Kids Come First organization, uses the power of social media. “It works really well to post something; I have collected over 200 pairs so far this year.” But it’s a year-round effort to collect everything from school supplies, hygiene products, clothing, to even

prom dresses and distribute them on a regular basis. When it started, teachers would ask Possda for specific items for specific kids but now Possda has helped set up “mini closets” on campuses that can simply be filled with supplies for teachers to take as needed. Getting donations is mostly by word of mouth and, well, social media.

“A constant flow of items is always needed,” said Possda, “It would be a dream come true to get donations all year round.” At the start of this year alone, she and a volunteer packed 250 bags and the Women’s Club packed 300 bags full of donated items, but more is always needed.

ernando D’Escalante Fontaneda was born in Cartagena, Colombia circa 1535. At 13, passage was booked for him and his brother aboard a ship bound for Spain. The ship set sail circa 1548, but never reached its destination. Survivors from the shipwreck, including Hernando, reached the shores of the Florida Keys and were captured

by Calusa Indians. In the book “West of the Papal Lines,” Barbara Purdy wrote, “His brother survived the wreck also, but throughout the years forty-two captives, including Alonzo, were ritually sacrificed amidst elaborate ceremonialism. The natives believed that the spirits of these strange outsiders would bring them good fortune.” For reasons known only to the king or caique of the Calusa people, Fontaneda was taken under his protection and would go on to live and travel with the Calusa for roughly 17 years.

Fontaneda wrote a memoir.

His observations, written in 1575, provide some of the earliest first-hand accounts of the island chain’s aboriginal people. “There are yet other islands, nearer to the mainland, stretching between the west and east, called the Martires, for the reason that many men have suffered on

them, and also because certain rocks rise there from beneath the sea, which, at a distance, look like men in distress. Indians are on these islands, who are of a large size: the women are well proportioned, and have good countenances. … The people are great anglers, and at no time lack for fish.”

“On these islands,” he noted, “is likewise a wood we call here palo para muchas cosas (the wood of many uses), well known to physicians; also much fruit of many sorts, which I will not enumerate, as, were I to attempt to do so, I should never finish. ...

These Indians have no gold, less silver, and less clothing. They go naked except only some breechcloths woven of palm, with which the men cover themselves; the women do the like with certain grass that grows on trees. This grass looks like wool, although it is different from it.”

Fontaneda described two villages in the Keys, Cuchiyaga and Guaragunbe. Fontaneda wrote that the Christians being held captive in Cuchiyaga were surprised by the presence of deer on the islands of Cuchiyaga.

About the other village he wrote, “The Indians of the Islands of Guaragunbe were rich; but, in the way that I have stated, from the sea, not from the land.”

THE MEAN STREETS OF KEY WEST PART ONE: WHEELED WARRIORS

He is a cartoonist, stand-up comic, screenwriter, and cheesy movie enthusiast.

ey West is generally a laid-back island and, when grouped together, most people get along.

But put folks in Key West upon something with wheels, then the vibe metamorphoses into something more batcrap crazy than Gary Busey on bath salts.

Anyone in a car, motorcycle, scooter, large tricycle, electric rental contraption, bicycle, skateboard — they’re all at war.

Except for the people on rollerblades. Other people on the road just feel sorry for them.

And the rollerblader’s only real battle is when the mazes on pancake house placemats prove too difficult.

On this diminutive rock, there are no fewer than 7,500 to 10,000 people on some sort of wheeled conveyance at any given time. Where did I get those figures? The highly-esteemed think-tank known as the “Never You Mind and Just Read The Damned Article, You Skeptical Burlap Sack of Hobo Stew Foundation.”

I’ve had a few jobs driving in Key West, and I realized it’s like navigating a 1980s video game.

Back then, driving games were about gingerly avoiding obstacles, and not maniacally obliterating them for extra points (the latter being the more satisfying option). In the Key West video game, it’s like, “Whoa! Car going down a one-way street!” “Yikes!

Swerve around that daredevil skateboarder!” “Watch out! Guy biking and texting while wearing earbuds!”

Speaking of such. On the irresponsibility scale, texting while biking is pretty damned high.

It’s right up there with leaving your baby in a dingo pen wearing a onesie made of raw lamb medallions. Watching someone texting while on a bicycle is one of those situations where you hope Darwinism would step in and remove this turdhat from the gene pool by steering him unwittingly into the path of a steamroller. Unfortunately, this world is not governed by cartoon laws — otherwise we would see many more fatalities due to pianos dropped from high-rises and exploding rocket skates.

Sometimes it seems like this island is akin to one of those electric, vibrating, toy football games; where the little plastic players just motorvate any which way with no set direction.

(By the way, Googling “electric vibrating toy” before I got to the word “football” gave me an interesting array of suggested sites.)

The problem with the myriad of different transportation modes on our island is that it breeds hatred. Every wheeler assumes he has exclusive dominion over the asphalt of Key West. The streets have become the equivalent of a YouTube comments section; everyone

is wrong but you. A common human trait is the propensity to blame others first, despite facts and logic. If an unleashed dog bit your face, the owner’s natural response would be, “Yeah? Well it’s probably because you smell like gravy!” There’s a lot of cursing and finger-pointing, (often with a select finger skyward.) It’s a jungle out there, so anytime you put rubber to road in K-dub, you have to be on your guard.

It’s a big honkin’ mess. You might ask, “Can’t we all just get along?” No. It’s why we have opposing sports teams, opposing politics, and opposing shows about competitive cupcake baking. All we can do while cruising in Key West is be cautious, try our best to be courteous, and look forward to the futuristic “Jetsons” days of moving walkways, hover-scooters, and flying cars.

I already have my deposit on a hover-scooter with a fella. He sold me hand cream on Duval once. I’m sure he’s legit.
