The increase in registered voters in Monroe County, compared to the last midterm primary, on Aug. 26, 2014. This year, there are 53,044 persons registered to vote. In 2014, there were 50,581 registered to vote, but only 13,760, or 27.2 percent, of them cast ballots. This year’s primary is on Aug. 28.

ong-awaited canal cleanup post-Hurricane Irma kicks off in the Middle Keys Friday, Aug. 17. What lies at the bottom of 103 canals countywide because of Hurricane Irma is unknown, but crews will be removing debris in the coming months from eight canals in the Upper Keys, 23 in the Middle Keys and 72 in the Lower Keys.

A total f $49.2 million was granted to Monroe County from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. It is divided into $6.5 million for Islamorada, $7.5 million for Marathon and $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe.

Regardless of Irma, canals throughout the Keys are becoming increasingly unhealthy, professor Henry Briceno said at Wednesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting in Key West.

He presented the results of a four-year study he conducted for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

by Florida International University in Miami.

Briceno said canals in the Keys are acting as pollutants to nearshore water environments.

“The waters in these canals are way beyond the targets of what we’re trying to achieve with remediation with wastewater and stormwater levels,” he said, adding that samples over the last four years show local canals were not designed for environmental purposes.

“They excavated very deep canals beyond 12 feet, long dead-end canals, and there is no good circulation in them. The water doesn’t move in and out – it just stays stagnant,” he said.

Some are deeper than 30 feet, which Briceno said is unnecessary and leads to accumulated organic matter.

“If you dove in a canal, close to the surface it’d be green, then deeper, it gets brownish, yellowish and red and then black – pitch-black with no light,” he said.

“The waters in these canals are way beyond the targets of what we’re trying to achieve with remediation and wastewater and stormwater levels.”

Irma aside, about 150 canals are considered in poor condition, because they are too deep and do not have enough current flow.

It could be years before a plan is in place to remediate the canals because all of the money from the state in the county’s 2019 budget for canal restoration will be used for hurricane recovery, according to Roman Gastesi, county administrator.

Aerators, back-filling and skimming for sea grass are helpful for restoring canals, Briceno said.

Having complete septic systems has helped, he said, but the “materials that went through the septic systems for 50 years are still there. Despite whether you do some changes in the system, all of that is still being leached out. We’re going to have this nutrient issue for years.”

Commissioners did not take action, but agreed within the next two years a significant amount of money will have to be spent on canal restoration.

he order of mammals known as Sirenia was named for the mythical Greek creatures whose songs lured sailors to their demise. What might not be known about these dugongs, sea cows, and manatees is that their order is about 50 million years old and most closely linked in ancestry to the elephant. Florida laws protecting the lumbering manatee date back to the British colonial period. The Provenance of East Florida’s governor attempted to establish laws protecting them in 1764. The laws were largely ignored.

On a state level, Florida passed its first laws protecting the official marine mammal of the Sunshine State in 1893. By 1907, molesting a manatee was punishable by a $500 fine and six months in jail.

Federally, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 offered protections that were expanded by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.

There was a time when Florida’s manatees were hunted for their meat and hides. When John James Audubon visited Indian Key on April 25, 1832, he hired resident James Egan as his guide. He wrote, “The pilot, besides being a first-rate shot, possessed a most intimate acquaintance with the country. … For years his employment had been to hunt those singular animals called Sea Cows or Manatees, and he had conquered hundreds of them, ‘merely,’ as he said, because the flesh and hide bring ‘a fair price’ at Havannah.”

Several of Florida’s Keys reference the manatee. Manatee Key, located in Florida Bay some seven miles north of Snake Creek, was named by Charles Brookfield after his boat Manatee, in 1927. The Cowpens Keys located off of Plantation Key have a less pleasant origin story. Legend suggests the islands were named because pens were once kept there where manatees were corralled until they could be slaughtered. The story seems most often associated with the Henry Flagler years. Manatees were supposedly harvested to feed the throngs of railroad workers. The name dates back to at least 1910, which would be the Flagler years. With the existing laws, it would seem unlikely that manatee were being commercially harvested on such a large scale without any newspapers reporting it. While pens may have existed in the shallows back in the pioneer days, no documentation has been discovered to verify it. While once hunted, at least the West Indian Manatee, unlike the Caribbean monk seal once seen basking on these rocky shores, and also desired for its hide and meat, was not hunted to extinction.

fter voting on July 19 to ban plastic straws and stirrers in Islamorada via an ordinance, the Village Council decided Aug. 9 to take a second look and consider a resolution instead.

There was no official action on the straw rule, which would have involved slapping violators with a $250 fine.

A handful of community members told the council to look at the situation with a broader scope and urged them to consider banning Styrofoam and plastic bags as well.

An ordinance is a law, while a resolution is a form of expression of the opinion or will of a municipality.

“We have a balloon rule, which is hard to enforce. Rather than creating more laws we can’t enforce, making a resolution gives us the ability to ask businesses to participate and encourage them,” said Mayor Chris Sante.

Other Florida cities have enacted bans on straws, including Miami Beach, Surfside, St. Petersburg and Marco Island.

Councilman Jim Mooney said it’s a worldwide issue.

“I didn’t invent it and we’re not going to end it. The plastic straw was the lowest-hanging fruit. Banning plastic bags is wonderful in theory, but hell will probably freeze over before that happens,” he said, adding that education of the dangers of plastic to sea life through social media is a good idea.

“We all know about the turtle with the straw in his nose. That was gross, so we know how it happened,” he said.

“When I go to a bar now, I say I don’t

want a straw. Shake it like the old days, like my parents did. Makes a better drink anyway.”

Council members said seeing the community come out to talk about the straw ban was encouraging.

“I’m not that hellbent on making this go through and fighting to the very end, but I’m just glad the awareness is out there,” said Councilman Mike Forster, who owns the restaurant Mangrove Mike’s.

He said his restaurant is 98 percent eco friendly now, and wasn’t six months ago.

“What you see in my restaurant is not plastic – it’s compostable. I got rid of all the plastic I have in my restaurant,” he said.

The council agreed unanimously to table the ordinance until further notice.

According to village attorney Roget Bryan, 40 countries have banned the use of plastic bags, making their use an arrestable crime.

How many artists showcase their work there? We see anywhere from 20-50 artists and vendors. Obviously, we are a seasonal community so we see more artists in fall and winter.

As the Art Walk continues, we plan to add more value to artists than just a physical presence.

We plan to give them the opportunity to be on our website’s artists directory so consumers can find them after the Art Walk.

eing called “executive director” is quite the privilege, something people strive for over the course of a career.

Andrea Johansson already has it on her resume before the age of 30, although it’s an interim position for the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District. Anders Urbom stepped down from the position in July.

“I just came on the board in June and it just happened to be weird timing because the director stepped down, so I volunteered in early July,” Johansson said. “It’s entrepreneurial and on my own time, and it’s not easy.”

Founded in 2011, the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District hosts monthly art walks on a tranquil stretch within a few blocks off U.S.1 every third Thursday.

So the Weekly asked…

Full name: Andrea Ann (Cockerham) Johansson Hometown: I’m from Islamorada, born and raised. I graduated from Coral Shores High School in 2010.

Family: My husband’s name is Lex Johansson and we will be married two years in November.

We met in Gainesville; I was actually a trainer at a gym he worked out at.

What do you do as executive director? I am charged with leading our organization by the premise of our mission. Myself and our operations coordinator organize and put on our monthly Art Walk and all other events and fundraisers.

What’s your favorite part about your position? I have always been a creative person and the community I surrounded myself with in Gainesville helped mold my entrepreneurial mindset. Not-for-profits are entrepreneurial pursuits to create impact or solve a problem.

Art and cultural districts literally change economies, especially in small towns like Islamorada and Key Largo. My favorite part about my interim position is that I know every second I spend focusing on it, I am helping the Florida Keys and my hometown.

Current full-time job? I have been building my career in real estate since 2015 in Gainesville.

After moving back to Islamorada, I now work with Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate Company as a broker/associate.

Are you an artist? I love artistic expression. I never expressed myself in traditional forms of fine art, like painting or four-dimensional art, but I have always been creative through writing and forms of acting.

College: I went to the University of Florida in Gainesville. My degree is in family, youth and community science, a derivative of sociology. I minored in anthropology. In the next two years I plan to get my master’s in real estate, hopefully from UF. What’s your favorite Keysy thing to do?

Probably drink a cocktail at sunset at a bayfront bar or at home or on a boat.

What’s your best professional advice? You can’t be great in anything you do unless you prioritize yourself and your health. Too often, people mistake someone who is disciplined in their pursuits for someone who is selfish. How can you show up for your partner, your friend, your company or your community if you can’t first show up for yourself?

What’s your favorite saying? Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. - Eleanor Roosevelt Dream meal: you’re sitting in a diner eating… what are you eating and who walks in and sits down next to you? If I am going to eat out and eat the yummiest dish, it would be pizza. I love talking to people who have no underlying agenda and don’t think within one paradigm - the two people that come to mind are Henry Flagler and Elon Musk.

What would you consider your greatest success? That is a great question that I don’t know the answer to. I don’t think it has happened yet.

What advice would you give underclassmen? Be respectful to the teachers and the upperclassmen.

We all know how it feels to be a freshman; enjoy high school while you can.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? “Slime.”

What are your plans after high school? I hope to go to college and graduate with a bachelor’s in Criminal Law Studies then have a really cool job in Law Enforcement.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? I would place pictures of me and my friends alongside my xbox showcasing my top plays in Fortnite.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I would like to graduate from college, travel to Australia, get married to Margot Robbie.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home?

Why or why not? I think I will make the Keys my permanent home after I graduate from college and go through the police academy. I just recently did a ride-along with an officer and I think it would be really fun to be a cop in the Keys.

ore than 8,000 students returned to schools in the Keys on Aug. 15 and authorities are adding a vital message to the back-to-school reminders: If you see something, say something. Law enforcement and the school district are working to ensure that our kids remain safe in these increasingly difficult times. Remind your children to tell a teacher or a school resource officer if they see something that doesn’t seem quite right.

Some of the things that kids should be alert for are:

• Bragging about weapons.

• Bullying or threatening behavior.

• The sudden withdrawal of an individual from their normal social circles.

• Talk of suicide.

hat does a Hollywood movie producer have in common with a room full of Keys teachers? The ability to influence the next generation to follow their dreams. “Titanic” and “Avatar” producer Jon Landau spoke to more than 1,000 Monroe County School District employees on Aug. 13 at the district-wide meeting held at Marathon Middle/High School. He mentioned some of the coaches and teachers who he said made an indelible impression on him growing up. “I’m a firm believer - the builders who form that foundation are you, the staff and faculty of our schools,” Landau said.

Whether you have kids in school or not, be ready to adjust your schedule to accommodate traffic slowdowns.

Here are some tips for parents:

• If your child is walking to or from school, walk the route beforehand.

Choose the most direct way, and be sure the route has sufficient sidewalks, lighting and crossing guards. If a crossing guard is absent, be sure your child knows when it is safe to cross the street.

• Make sure your child walks to and from school with trusted schoolmates and avoids strangers.

• Teach your kids to obey all traffic signals.

• When waiting for the school bus always stand on the sidewalk, away from the road.

• Be sure your child knows a phone number where you can be reached in case of an emergency.

EPA CONTINUES OXITEC REVIEW

Decision expected by end of year

T

he U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is continuing its review of Oxitec’s Expermental Use Permit (EUP) application and the comments received during the two 30-day public comment periods surrounding the release of Oxitec’s Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Monroe County.

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) had expected the review to be complete in July. FKMCD anticipates a regulatory decision on the application by year’s end.

The purpose of Oxitec’s proposed pilot project is to determine the efficacy of its Aedes aegypti “Friendly” mosquitoes as a control method of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Monroe County.

“The Aedes aegypti is a very difficult mosquito to control,” said FKMCD Executive Director Andrea Leal. “We are constantly looking at new technologies to combat this mosquito and we look forward to the EPA’s review of the Oxitec mosquito.”

A

partnership among the Village of Islamorada, Monroe County and Habitat for Humanity hit pay dirt last week when ground was broken on a new affordable-housing complex on Windley Key at MM 84.7.

“This will be a great project and great opportunity for many of our hard workers in Islamorada and throughout the Keys to have a place to call home or a good place to rent,” said Habitat Director Jack Niedbalski.

Half of the 16 units will be rentals and the other half will be sold to qualified families with a 30-year, interest-free loan. This is Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys’ largest project ever and is expected to open, along with a new Habitat Restore, in about 20 months.

“We already broke ground because our goal is to get this built as quickly as possible because the need is so great,” Niedbalski added.

The event drew close to 100 supporters, including elected officials, business leaders and the Habitat board of directors, led by Chairman Doug Hill, along with Vice Chair Chris Trentine, who began researching the project about 6-1/2 years ago.

“We all live in the Keys and know it will take longer than we would like, but we also know that since the storm it is more essential than ever,” said Monroe County Mayor David Rice.

“This is a wonderful project and we are glad to be apart of it.”

A CHALLENGE FOR STUDENTS Foundation seeks help designing plastic-free coral tree

T

he Coral Restoration Foundation is opening up a design challenge to Florida’s students, giving them the opportunity to win a state-of-the-art educational aquarium for their school, and have a hand in helping save coral reefs from extinction.

With 500 Coral Trees, across seven nurseries, in one year, the Coral Restoration Foundation can grow and outplant more than 20,000 endangered corals back onto the Florida Reef Tract.

Now, the foundation is seeking the help of Florida’s students.

Coral Trees are made of plastic and the foundation is working to develop plastic-free versions. Young minds have creative, often surprising, ways of solving problems, so the foundation is challenging Florida’s students to see if they can help design a plastic-free Coral Tree.

Using the Coral Restoration Foundation learning labs, students will be introduced to the scientific principles behind its reef restoration methods. With an understanding of these principles, students will be able to use their ingenuity and unique perspectives to create a design that could be used to help rescue our planet’s coral reefs from extinction.

This educational package is enriched with the help of 5Gyres, internationally-recognized authorities on the plastic pollution crisis.

The winning design will be built and installed in one of the foundation’s Coral Tree Nurseries for further testing. But that’s not all. The winning class will be awarded a state-of-the-art educational aquarium, the “Think Tank”, donated by Titan Aquatic Exhibits in association with Titan Composites, Reef Brite, Neptune Systems, ESHOPPS, and ReefH2O. The Think Tank will be accompanied by an educational curriculum from Healthy Aquatics Marine Institute that will allow students to learn from and maintain the aquarium, giving their school a permanent resource that will enrich their understanding of marine ecosystems and ocean conservation.

The Think Tank will even house a mini version of the students’ winning Plastic-Free Tree, hung with fragments of Acropora corals.

Helping to launch this statewide competition is Coral Restoration Foundation’s pirate, Captain Coral, who will appear in Key Largo at the Murray Nelson Government Center for a show that blends theatre with science and conservation.

Coral Restoration Foundation will have hands-on activity booths at the event. The show is free of charge.

Booths open at 4 p.m. on Sept. 29, with Captain Coral arriving at 5 p.m.

Classes can submit their PlasticFree Tree designs to the Coral Restoration Foundation through its website. The deadline is Feb. 11, 2019, National Inventors Day. The winning design will be announced on March 22, 2019, World Water Day. More information is at coralrestoration.org/plastic-free-tree-challenge.

Closer to Reality at Keys History & Discovery Center

T

hrough a partnership with Mote Marine Laboratory and Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation, and an ongoing capital campaign, the permanent exhibit named “Coral Reef Exploration” is closer to reality and expected to be installed in the fall at Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada, on the property of the Islander Resort.

The exhibit will feature three aquariums, educational storyboards, interactive kiosks and video monitors focused on providing both a beautiful and educational view of our unique coral reef ecosystem and the challenges it faces.

The largest of the aquariums, named in memory of Harold and Bettie Bartlett, who loved the waters of the Florida Keys, is 1,250 gallons.

It will showcase species that make their home on and around the Keys coral reefs, including corals, fish and invertebrates. A 280-gallon aquarium featuring live coral is named for the Charles G. Wright Endowment for Humanity. A second 280-gallon aquarium housing invasive lionfish is named in honor of Juanita Russell Knudsen.

In addition to those donations, this $250,000 project is funded in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and through in-kind contributions from Mote, including annual maintenance and upkeep. To reach the goal, an additional $43,400 is needed. Giving levels, to be recognized within the exhibit area, include: $20,000-$24,999 = Shark $15,000-$19,999 = Grouper $10,000-$14,999 = Grunts $5,000-$9,999 = Wrasse $1,000-$4,999 = Damsel Additional donations will help the foundation reach the goal of educating and entertaining locals and visitors for generations to come,” said foundation President Rich Russell. “This exhibit allows us to enhance the discovery component of our mission.”

ALGAE I BLOOM

t is both an environmental and public relations disaster for Florida. Photos of dead fish and mammals, and videos of neon green algae mats are nothing short of alarming. It has the attention of national media outlets, as well as tourists who understand it’s unsafe to take a dip. Environmental agencies and state government are scrambling to address the problem. Here in the Keys, where many take the preservation of our natural resources so seriously, blue green algae is cause for alarm even though it isn’t in our “backyard,” the Florida Bay. But it is closely related to local problems in Florida Bay — specifically the drought of 2015 that killed approximately 50,000 acres of sea grass. The algae to the north, and the high salinity conditions of Florida Bay, are both connected to the reconfiguration of the Everglades in the early 20th century to “drain the swamp.”

Following are some frequently asked questions about the situation.

Can the “blue green algae” bloom spread to the Keys?

The short answer is no.

What’s the current state of Florida Bay? It’s fragile.

“Once it’s exposed to saltwater, it dies.

The idea that it would make it all the way down to the Keys is not plausible,” said Shannon Estenoz, a Key West native and chief operating officer for the Everglades Foundation.

“We’re still recovering from the drought of 2015,” said Van Lent, adding that it took 15 years to recover from the second-to-last event in Florida Bay. The drought caused fatal levels of salinity. “We need absolutely perfect conditions for a long time to get seagrass recruitment started again.

Wet years help, but it’s going to take a long time.”

The algae clogging the Caloosahatchee River to the west of Lake Okeechobee, and the St. Lucie River to the east, is a freshwater bacteria that is able to photosynthesize. The nutrients, or agricultural fertilizer, are literally the fuel of the crisis.

Have there been algae blooms in the Keys?

Yes, but not like that.

Algae blooms in the Keys are the result of “die-offs” or temperature spikes.

When the water gets too salty, or too warm, seagrass dies. Its nutrients are then released into the water column, acting as a natural fertilizer for algae.

“That sets off a chain reaction,” said Tom Van Lent, vice president of science and education for the Everglades Foundation, and a 22-year resident of Key Largo. “Small algae clogs the pores of sponges which clean water, and when the sponges die, that blocks even more light and kills more seagrass.”

In Florida Bay, rainfall usually exceeds evaporation during summer months.

But from January through May, it’s a “knife’s edge,” Van Lent said. Florida Bay isn’t receiving enough fresh water because of water management projects in the Everglades that divert water to the east and west, and impedes flow south.

What about the red tide?

It’s a naturally occurring algae bloom, first reported in the 16th Century by exploring Spaniards. It only occurs in saltwater and it originates offshore, so the connection to manmade pollution is unclear — however, it is certainly exacerbating the water conditions in areas already suffering from the blue green algae bloom.

Scientists monitor red tide (http://myfwc.com/research/redtide/statewide/) and there is no reported bloom in the Florida Keys currently. Scientists can forecast red tide movement using wind and water current data. In addition to killing fish, it can also affect the human respiratory system. Not to sound too technical here, but it feels “burny” — both in the lungs and in the eyes.

What’s being done?

It’s complicated.

The bad news is the terrible devastation caused by the green-blue algae bloom. The good news is the heightened awareness of the need for expedited Everglades restoration, or the reconfiguring of Lake Okeechobee’s watershed. Water that once moved north to south in the lake is now being diverted east and west.

What makes the situation worse, is the irrigation needs of the state’s agricultural industry. When it’s dry, the farms can draw water out of the lake — a legally permitted use of that water. But when it rains over the area — like it did in May raising the lake’s water table almost two feet in about two weeks — the farmers don’t need the extra water.

The Army Corps of Engineers must divert the water east and west, as quickly as possible, to protect the infrastructure as well as local populations.

What’s the plan?

There has been a plan in place for 18 years to rectify this situation. It’s called the Central Everglades Planning Project — a group of water storage and conveyance projects south of Lake Okeechobee that will allow additional clean water to be directed south into the Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. There has been some movement recently: • Possibly the most important is how White House Office of Management and Budget has approved the plans for the EAA Reservoir. It now must go before Congress for funding. The reservoir would be located just south of Lake Okeechobee and would function like a rain barrel. It would allow authorities to store and clean water rather than discharging polluted lake waters into the estuaries to the east and west.

The South Florida Water Management District has said the 10,100-acre reservoir and 6,500-acre manmade marsh would reduce discharges to both rivers by 63 percent and provide 120 billion gallons of clean water for the Everglades every year.

• The S-333 construction project recently received a $6 million investment and a schedule bump from Tallahassee. It borders highway 41, or the Tamiami Trail, and would result in twice as much water being able to flow south — 2,500 cubic feet per second. With more water moving south, there isn’t as much pressure to discharge east and west, and it helps the water-starved southern end of the state.

• The C-111 construction project, started in 2010, is pretty much complete. It pumps 290 million gallons of water daily to the eastern edge of the park.

Now, there might be a tussle over how it’s operated — as a restoration project, or a flood plain protection project for population centers east of the park.

TIMELINE: JUNE 20 Florida issues an emergency order urging the Army Corps of Engineers to redirect Lake Okeechobee water flow discharges to the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers.

JULY 9 Gov. Rick Scott declares a state of emergency over algae blooms.

JULY 10 White House Office of Management and Budget approves plans for the EAA Reservoir project. It is expected to cost $1.6 billion. It now awaits funding approval from Congress.

JULY 12 State orders Department of Economic Opportunity to conduct “emergency business damage assessment” surveys.

JULY 23 State authorizes $3 million in grants to help mediate damage and clean up of the algae bloom.

AUG. 7 State approves additional $400,000 in funding to Lee County (Fort Myers) to manage algae bloom.

AUG. 7 FWC waives rules related to dead fish clean ups, but orders populace not to touch rare fish or mammals.

AUG. 10 Gov. Rick Scott tours Stuart, Florida, by boat to see algae bloom effects.

AUG. 13 Scott declares state of emergency for Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties for red tide, for scientists, resources for cleanup, monitoring and marketing.

lmost as if a starting bell rang, hundreds of Royal Poinciana caterpillars can be seen ascending Royal Poinciana trees just after sunset. Then, nearly in harmony with daylight cresting over the horizon, their descent begins and the caterpillars go back into hiding.

This is the interesting behavior of the Royal Poinciana Caterpillar (Melipotis acantoides) and seems to be an effort to avoid light.

This pest is unique in that there appears to be 10 to 15 years or so between major outbreaks.

Severe defoliations were first reported in St. Petersburg and in Key West in 1942. The next year, alarming rates of defoliation were reported

by Stephen C. Singleton, manager of the Key West Chamber of Commerce.

Singleton also noted the defoliated trees did not put out any new growth until June of the following year and that some of the trees died. In 1945 Singleton noted caterpillars were active in April and October.

More recently, there was an outbreak in Naples in 2006 when four 30to 40-feet-tall Royal Poincianas were 50 percent defoliated by October. All of the current infestations being reported in Monroe County are coming from Key West, except for an isolated occurrence in Islamorada.

The caterpillars are roughly 1 5/8 inches long with highly variable markings, mottled, lateral black-brown longitudinal stripes. This is one of the few cutworm species that will climb tall trees; most other cutworms attack vegetable crops or herbaceous plants.

The caterpillar is a nocturnal feeder, climbing the trunk of the tree shortly after sunset to feed on the canopy and descending the trunk during the day to hide in the grass or mulch at the soil surface near the base of the tree. The caterpillars will also hide in cracked or opening seed pods.

Due to the lacy foliage of the tree, early infestation in the canopy won’t be visible; what will be noticed is massive amounts of droppings on decks or sidewalks, or the caterpillars ascending or descending the trunk. This provides an excellent opportunity for control because there is no need to spray the canopy of the tree, which would be extremely costly and harmful to other insects.

A contact insecticide sprayed at the base of the trunk to about 3 feet up will provide effective control. Bt products (Bacillus thuringiensis) are highly effective against caterpillars, but since it is a stomach toxin and would need to be ingested, other products might offer better control. However, a couple of residents have reported successful results from treatment.

Bifenthrin products or Carbaryl (Sevin) would be effective. It’s very important to read the label! Whatever is used has to be labeled for the site you are using it on. As a homeowner, any products applied would have to be labeled for use in residential landscapes; you couldn’t use something that is registered for commercial nurseries just because it might have the same active ingredient. That is a violation of the label and federal law.

Since the caterpillars like to hide from light during the day, another effective method of control would be applying a burlap cloth trap around the trunk. Caterpillars will hide in the cloth. It could then be removed and the cloth dunked into soapy water to remove the caterpillars and reapplied to the trunk.

The Royal Poinciana tree (Delonix regia), is not native to North America, but to the dry deciduous forests of Madagascar. It has been introduced into tropical and subtropical regions all over the world. According to the University of Florida, IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants in Florida’s Natural Area, it is to be planted with caution in Southern Florida due to its ability to escape cultivation. Due to their large size and sprawling roots, they are better suited to larger landscapes, since the tree can reach heights of 40 feet with a canopy width of 40 to 60 feet.

The Florida Keys were a haven to pirates and rumrunners in the prohibition days, and now rum is celebrated openly in Key West. From Cuban sugarcane to Spanish Marie, who came up with her own language and the first reef, to the “pelicans,” a.k.a. the fishermen who would pick it up and stash it, learn all the ins and outs of Key West’s rum businesses by taking the tours and sipping on a southernmost tradition.

HEMINGWAY RUM COMPANY makers of Papa’s Pilar 201 Simonton St. Key West was home to celebrated writer Ernest Hemingway, a big fan of rum, and Papa’s Pilar, named after Hemingway’s boat, is a favorite dark and blonde rum in Key West. Located in the Historic Key West Handprint Factory building, the blended rums with accents from the Caribbean and South America go through a three- and four-barrel process at the Key West distillery. The tour is $10 and includes a $5 off promotion toward any purchase. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, tasters can meet the rum maker. Bonus: The blonde was named the number one blonde rum in the world in 2017. And the classic rums add no additional colors, flavors, or sugars to the process. In a partnership with Hemingway’s family, a percentage of all sales goes to literacy and ocean conservation.

KEY WEST FIRST LEGAL RUM DISTILLERY 105 Simonton St. Paul Menta, founder of Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, said he’s not sure how many places in Key West offer a free backstage pass like his free interactive tour and free tasting. “We are working every day to keep up with our demand,” he said. “There’s a lot of commotion and people get to walk through and see everything done by hand from making it to putting in a bottle.” He said the staff is what makes the distillery successful, because everyone feels welcomed. “The idea is to add to this amazing town,” he said. “As Key West succeeds so do we.” The distillery offers 10 brands, and plans on adding a “blonde bitch” and something really new to the market in whole, sparkling rum, soon.

KEY WEST DISTILLING 524 Southard St. Makers of craft spirits, rums, vodkas, gin and whiskey, Chief Distiller Jeffrey Louchheim says Key West Distilling uses the finest ingredients and age-old distilling processes to create a loved product. “People call our island ‘paradise,’ and we know you will find some in each bottle,” he said in a previous interview with The Weekly. Sample freshly made batches while touring the facility and learning the process of making spirits. Louchheim has been described as a mad scientist — adding, sipping, stirring, sipping and striving for perfection — at his custom-made artisan still.

The tour is free and the tasting is $5 to try five of their best-selling spirits.
