n an effort to hear public concerns and questions regarding plans for Fishermen’s Community Hospital and its future, Baptist Health South Florida officials are holding a town hall Monday, Aug. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.

“We’d like to share some of our plans for the coming year and beyond with you,” says a post on the Fishermen’s Facebook page. “We’d also like to hear your views on healthcare in the Keys,” it says.

The meeting at Marathon Government Center will include a moderated discussion and Q&A session, and will host hospital representatives and community residents.

Over the last two months, a new taxing district in the Middle Keys has been discussed and approved by the Board of County Commissioners. The tax, to roll out in 2019, will help Baptist make up for some of the $33,000 it is reportedly losing each day at the temporary hospital near MM 49 oceanside.

At .5 mills or less, the tax will be levied on homes from MM 47 to 60 and will help pay for indigent care only. The district includes Key Colony Beach and Duck Key. The Monroe County Commission will review the tax every year for 10 years, with the goal of raising $15 million.

July 23 was opening day at the new modular facility on the Fishermen’s Community Hospital grounds.

It replaced a temporary field hospital, which went up 16 days after Hurricane Irma destroyed the hospital Baptist had just bought.

The old hospital building is being emptied and will be demolished to make way for a new 40,000 square-foot hospital. An architect has been hired for the $40 million project, according to Fishermen’s CEO Rick Freeburg.

In the meantime, the four-part modular hospital that will serve patients for the next two years is almost ready for in-patient services.

The emergency room, lab, pharmacy and respiratory services are up and running. Imaging services include X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds and echocardiograms. The 8,000-square-foot modular hospital cost about $5 million.

Once the final two rooms are finished, they will include four outpatient rooms, four inpatient rooms and a cafeteria.

till in recovery from Hurricane Irma and facing a trade war on live lobster exports to China, Florida Keys lobster fishermen are still optimistic about the eightmonth commercial season, which opened Aug. 6.

Simply put, the Chinese like live spiny lobster, and they’re willing to pay for it, said Bill Kelly, executive director of the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association. That’s especially true as Asian holidays approach.

How much they’re willing to buy and what they’re willing to pay this season are the unknowns, especially with higher tariffs now on live lobster exports to China.

Tom Hill, co-owner of Key Largo Fisheries, didn’t seem too concerned on opening day. About 15 to 20 commercial fishermen bring in lobster for him to sell through Key Largo Fisheries.

“I sell a fair amount to China, and will my price be affected by the tariff?

Yeah. It’s going to be a challenge this year as far as finding different places to sell, but even if the price is lower, it may open up other doors in other places,” he said. “We can sell domestically or more to Europe and in that direction.”

He said the market price per pound will change in the coming days and weeks depending on supply and demand, like any other good.

“It’s too soon for anyone to say ‘This is the price.’ My Chinese customers, they don’t even know what to

offer us because they don’t know what the market is going to be,” Hill said.

Gary Graves, vice president of Keys Fisheries in Marathon, agreed.

“We’ve been doing this for years,” he said of lobster sales from the Middle Keys fishery. “I sell all over the world — Japan, Korea, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, France… the tariffs will have an effect, but China will buy. It’s just a matter of what the price is.”

For the past two seasons, the average retail price has been between $9.50 and $10.50 a pound, Kelly said.

For a wholesaler to break even, it would have to be bought at $6 to $7 per pound, because the cost of operation for boat crewmen, fuel, ice, bait and so forth is about $1,000 a day.

“The highest retail price we’ve ever seen was $20.50 a pound to China,” Kelly said.

On a positive note, the lobster that weren’t harvested last season after Hurricane Irma have had a year to grow. They hauled carapace to deeper waters after the storm, Kelly said.

This year, Keys commercial lobster fishermen will harvest between 5.9 million and 7.2 million pounds of spiny lobster, and on the recreational side about 2 million pounds, he said.

“Last year, we left about 40 percent of that 5.9 to 7.2 million pounds unharvested, displaced in lost traps.

We probably have another 2.5 million pounds of lobster that didn’t go anywhere,” he said. “The ones who got a new lease on life because of Irma are bigger and smarter. Every indication is that we’re going to have a banner season, barring any storms or hurricanes.”

Hill said he told his fishermen, prior to opening day of commercial season, it doesn’t matter what the price is “as long as there is plenty for us to catch and for everyone to enjoy.”

A

fter last week’s Key lime pie controversy – whether the tart delight was invented in the Florida Keys – reached not just a fevered pitch, but a national audience, it seems like the perfect time to reveal how Citrus aurantiifolia came to the Florida Keys.

The fruit is known by many names.

In Thailand, the fruit is called “manau.”

In this part of the world, it is known as West Indian lime, Mexican lime and Key lime.

It is not native to the Americas, but to Southeast Asia. Citrus aurantiifolia was carried across North Africa and introduced to Spain and Portugal. European explorers are thought to have brought the lime to the New World in the 16th Century. Some say Christopher Columbus introduced the tree to Hispaniola, known as Haiti today.

From there, theories suggest Spanish conquistadors brought the lime to the Americas.

Henry Perrine, in the early 1830s, is considered responsible for introducing the lime to the Florida Territory. Perrine had been stationed in Campeche, Yucatan as a U.S. consul when he received a letter from Secretary of the Treasury Richard Russ stat-

ing that President John Quincy Adams wanted all foreign consuls to identify and document potentially beneficial plants for possible cultivation in the United States. Perrine not only collected local fauna, but also made copious notes. Though he would not physically arrive on the island chain until Christmas Day 1838, Perrine sent more than 100 boxes of botanical samples to Captain John Dubose, keeper of the Cape Florida Lighthouse on Key Biscayne.

Perrine also sent samples, among more than 70 species of plants, to Charles Howe at Indian Key. Howe, along with Key West’s Judge Webb, were Perrine’s partners in the Tropical Plant Company. After its arrival in the Keys, the lime spread to early settlers’ home gardens. By the turn of the century, commercial Key lime groves were recorded. When a series of hurricanes, combined with the arrival of Henry Flagler’s train, effectively wiped out the pineapple industry, the Key lime grew in commercial importance.

Law enforcement hosts community party for all

M

arathon was one of 16,000 communities across the country to put on National Night Out on Aug. 7. The event at Marathon Community Park had food, music and giveaways, with the goal of promoting neighborhood camaraderie and partnerships with law enforcement officials.

Traditionally held the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out brings millions of neighbors together. There were also events in Key Largo, Islamorada and Stock Island.

Besides providing haircuts, the group is also collecting school supplies for students before the first day of school.

“People are really stepping up for these kids,” said mom Kim Arencibia.

The nonprofit collected dresses from students last year, from everything from homecoming and prom, to moving-up ceremonies and graduations.

“A spotlight really needs to be shined on those who have donated and those who are taking the day off to help the kids out.”

Arencibia explained the devastation those like D.J.s, wedding photographers, and of course, stylists and makeup artists endured after the storm. “That industry took a direct hit; they don’t do hair and makeup and nails when there is a hurricane,” she said. “They are all truly angels.”

Appointments are required, and the stylists ask that kids come with freshly washed, still damp hair to make the lines move faster. Food for Thought is catering the event, and Sea Level Spa blocked the entire day off for the kids from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Setting up a meeting with Key West Mayor Craig Cates, she brought up beach cleanups and the needs of students and teachers heading into the 2018-2019 school year. “The meeting has been the highlight of this,” she said, in addition to helping so many local children. But, Kiley Mae’s list had a lot of gaps to fill for the kids signed up for the cut-a-thon. “He called Mr. John (Dick) immediately and Mr. John called the American Legion and they are going to help with all the supplies we still need.”

CHEF FLAVOR Carl Stanton teaches kids to cook SARA MATTHIS

C

arl Stanton is a mountain of a man. But his presence — in the classroom and on the football field — is bigger. He’s going into this seventh year as the culinary teacher at Marathon Middle High School and he runs the “Pro Start” culinary program. He’s also the offensive and defensive line football coach for the Dolphins.

After a long career as a professional chef and caterer, he now teaches six classes a day, touching the lives of about 130 students on a daily basis. The students show off their proficiency about twice a month during the school year with dinners at the Dolphin Bistro on the second floor of the high school. The menu varies from dinner to dinner, and the students cook and serve up delicious meals.

Stanton first visited the Keys almost a decade ago, as a “guest chef” for a wine dinner hosted by George Patti, former owner of Taster’s Grill who currently operates M.E.A.T. It was at the dinner he met his predecessor, who asked him if he might be interested in teaching in the Middle Keys.

He is married to Simone and has three daughters. Two are at Marathon High School and one has already graduated — Kaitlyn, 20, Khendra 15, and Adriana 13.

Yes, as it turns out. He was interested.

Do you have a nickname and who gave it to you? Chef Flavor. It came from a restaurant I worked at in D.C. It describes a style of cooking; it tastes like a chef made it.

What is the best and worst cooking show on TV? I like “Chopped” and “Knife Fight.” Probably the worst, because of what it exposes, is “Kitchen Nightmares.”

Did you mean to become a teacher? I had taught before — mostly adults — on basic cooking skills, how to entertain at home, I even taught a rehabilitation program for felons. And my grandfather was a college professor, and all of my aunts and uncles were teachers and principals and deans. So, had I ever thought about teaching? Um … no.

How would your students describe you?

Funny and sarcastic.

Has there ever been a “disaster” in the Dolphin kitchen? Well, one time a student substituted salt for sugar in a batch of chocolate chip cookies. They looked perfect. I made all the students taste one as a lesson on the importance of following a recipe.

What have been your successes in the classroom? Three of my students who graduated in 2017 have gone on to culinary school — two at Johnson and Wales, and one at Culinary Institute of America. They still call me.

Who taught you how to cook? I grew up in the “DMV” area (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) where I was a chef and

also had a catering company. I started in a culinary program in high school taught by John Dorney. I attended University of Maryland where I studied Restaurant and Hospitality Management. My other mentors were Albert Uster and Rich Michner.

What about football? That’s the other love of my life. I played nose guard and defensive tackle in high school and at the University of Maryland.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … what are you eating and who walks in and sits down next to you? Muhammad Ali and eggs Benedict.

What is your nerdiest passion?

Watching “Jeopardy.”

What is your favorite thing to do?

Well, it sounds cheesy, but coming from a big metropolitan area … I just like to sit and watch the water, watch the sunset.

What’s your favorite saying? If you knew better, you’d do better.

he entire Stanley Switlik Elementary campus has been reconfigured. When parents arrive on Wednesday, Aug. 15 to drop off their children, it will be a completely new routine.

A new driveway has been installed that runs behind the Florida Highway Patrol and Department of Motor Vehicles building on U.S.1. Cars will enter on 33rd Street, make a hard right, and drive all the way to the cul de sac at the end, turn, and then

drop off students as they exit the driveway at a brand new portico. Teachers and administrators will usher the students in the gates.

Security is much tighter for the 2018-2019 year. Parents will no longer be able to escort their children inside for “line up.”

“The only way for parents or adults to access the property is through the office. They either come in the office, take care of business and leave by the same door, or they get a pass and are allowed on campus,” said principal Brett Unke. “Security has been significantly enhanced. Access to campus will be very well-managed and restricted. We’ve installed cameras and have a 10-foot fence all the way around the property.”

Monroe County Sheriff Sgt. Patty O’Keefe will be the new, full-time student resource officer at the school.

The 15 modular classrooms will house third, fourth, and fifth grades. “It’s pretty spacious,” said teacher Jeanette Wert of her room that measures about 36 feet by 42 feet. “It’s bigger than my old room and I have windows!”

Kindergarten, first, and second grades will be in the two-story Sue Moore Building. The new playground is located directly behind that. The campus’ old “main building,” which housed the school office on the main floor, is being demolished and a new structure will take its place.

The construction is slated to take two years and cost about $37 million. Halfway through the 2019-2020 school year, the older grades will transition into the new building while the younger kids will take over the modular classrooms.

What’s missing? Well, room for the support teachers.

Extra tutoring in, say, reading, will take place in the corner of a regular classroom. The stage in the cafetorium has been converted into the school library.

“We’re like the Waltons,” said Unke, referencing the old TV show. “We’re like 16 people crowded into a two-bedroom house.”

Stanley Switllik has 586 students enrolled for the 20182019 school year, but more are still registering. Before Hurricane Irma, there were 606 but by the end of the school year, there were 592.

n Thursday, Aug. 16, Keys Dance Academy will open its doors in the new space in Town Square Mall above Frank’s Grill. Owner Jamie Stevens and two friends — Lisa Scobba and Shelby DeFiore — will be teaching acrobatics, ballet, tap and jazz to kids; plus ballet and tap to adults.

“I have a passion for dance,” said Stevens, mom to Abbigail, 7, and Fisher, 5. “I’ve always dreamed of opening my own studio.

I have the means, I figured out the space, figured out the instructors and decided to do it.”

Classes begin Monday, Aug. 27.

Stevens has a background in competitive dance. Although she never trained formally, she competed for 11 years in contests around Florida and Georgia. She also studied at the Steps on Broadway in New York City alongside top ballet dancers and Broadway performers. Scobba specializes in ballet and owned her own dance studio for more than two decades in Northern Kentucky. DeFiore, originally from Jacksonville, Florida, was a “level 10” gymnast, with experience teaching little ones.

Class sizes are expected to be 15 students or less. Classes will be held Monday to Friday in the afternoons and evenings, and possibly some Saturday classes as well. Students as young as 3 years old will be accepted. Stevens said she looks forward to teaching adults, young girls and young boys.

“Dancing is a great life skill,” Stevens said. “It’s good for the body, and teaches discipline and The public is invited memory building. I still remember to attend the ribbon some combinations from routines cutting on Thursday, I learned years ago!”

wo former educators are seeking the District 4 seat on the Monroe County School Board. Because there are only two candidates, the Aug. 28 primary election will decide the race. Bobby Highsmith was unopposed and Sue Woltanski faces no challenges after Ron Martin stepped down after eight years of service. The new board will be seated in November.

Questions: 1. The Monroe County School Board recently unveiled its plan to address mental health in Keys Schools, as mandated by the state legislature’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. It calls for some additional curriculum, and the hire of two more social workers for a total of four, and three more life skills counselors for a total of five for the entire district serving 8,000 students. Do you think this is adequate?

2. The Monroe County School Board recently approved a one-year trial of a drug-testing program for student athletes. After the year is up, how will you measure the success or failure of the trial program? Will it be an informal or documented measure?

3. The school district is reportedly in the process of changing land regulations in order to build 10 workforce units on land adjacent to the Sugarloaf School. The school board has made several other attempts to address teacher housing shortages, including the purchase of Marathon Manor more than a decade ago that is now being developed into athletic fields. Do you think that teacher housing is within the purview of the school district?

First elected to the Monroe County School Board in 2006, John Dick is seeking a fourth term in the District 4 seat. He’s lived in the Keys since 1989 and served in numerous capacities with several organizations from Key Largo to Key West. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is the former college and career counselor for Marathon High School. His wife, Lourdes, was a teacher at Marathon High, and the couple have two daughters and a son.

1. The additional resources are welcomed and will only partially fill the gap. However, we do have to find a qualified person to fill each position which of course is a re-occurring problem in Monroe County. When we have done so to our satisfaction, I would encourage the district to explore every avenue for additional funding to add more highly qualified mental health personnel.

2. We will measure the outcomes in both documented and informal ways. We will document the amount of random tests and the amount of positive/negative results. We will document the follow-up procedure on those that tested positive.

I will receive informal feedback through my various roles and contacts with organizations involved with students and their families such as Boys & Girls Club, Monroe County Coalition, Rotary, and the various veterans’ organizations.

3. We are currently in the process of changing the land use designation for the property behind Sugarloaf School so that we can put it out for bid to develop workforce housing. We are moving the bus barn and storage from the Trumbo Point property in order to bid out that property for workforce housing. I am agreeable to providing property that we own and is not needed for educational purposes to be used for workforce housing. However, I do not believe the school district should build or operate workforce housing; it needs to be done by a developer. * Incumbent

Islamorada resident James Doran is seeking election for his first four-year term on the board.

The retired teacher began his teaching career at Key Largo Elementary School in 1972 and he has taught worldwide in places like Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and England. He’s owned his Islamorada home since 1986. Doran and his wife, Vickie, a retired teacher and school librarian, have one grown daughter and a son.

Early intervention is critically important. Keeping our campuses safe requires open and clear communications amongst students, staff, parents, teachers and school leaders. It is important to proactively address the social and emotional needs of students who are struggling with depression or violent thoughts before those feelings become overwhelming. To limit feelings of depression, disengagement, and hostility toward others, school personnel and students must strive to make all students feel they are cared for and welcomed.

2. The trial must be measured both qualitatively and quantitatively. Questionnaires should be prepared for all stake holders, students, teachers, administrators and parents, and administered during the first week or two of school as a baseline for a follow-up questionnaire to be given at the end of the school year. The thoughts and concerns of administrators and co-curricular sponsors and coaches should also be proactively solicited on an informal basis throughout the year. To be successful everyone must feel they are part of the process, that their views are heard, and that there is a shared vision.

3. Housing in Monroe County is the major factor in hiring and retaining the best teachers for our children. Although I would prefer the district to not be in the business of providing housing, desperate times sometimes require desperate measures.

Teachers are the key to strong schools, no other factor comes even close. The district must be open to all ideas that will facilitate the hiring and retention of the best teachers (and support personnel).

However, the devil will be in the details, so the School Board must be very vigilant, careful, and open to the pitfalls going forward.

BEST ALBUMS? Contenders for best overall collections of music, IMHO

I

f a person is looking for a list of best albums, a quick Google search will reveal a huge number of lists of the top 50, 100, 300, 500 Best Albums Ever. It seems like everyone has a list… and now, here’s one more.

I don’t really know if these are the best ever, but each one of these exists as a real album — a cohesive unit rather than a collection of unrelated songs.

And there is no particular order to this list; each one stands on its own.

“Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”/ “Abbey Road” – The Beatles. Yeah, I know. That’s two albums and not just one. But each is as good as the other, and I can’t leave one off. In 1967, the Beatles had quit performing live and were tired of being the Beatles. Paul’s idea that they cast themselves as a completely different band was well received by the other Fabs, and they threw themselves wholeheartedly into making a record that wasn’t the Beatles. Ironically, it’s one of the albums most associated with the Beatles, and this record set a high bar for any “concept albums.”

“Abbey Road” is part of this entry because it’s the last Beatles album (in terms of what they recorded), and it’s a swan song par excellence. It’s basically two mini-albums in one: Side 1 is a collection of some of the Beatles’ greatest individual songs, while Side 2 takes the listener on a musical journey that ends with the greatest goodbye line from any group or musician ever.

Their growth as musicians, writers, and artists is evident in the tracks, and the world is damn fortunate that these four Liverpudlians got together.

“Dark Side of the Moon” – Pink Floyd. There are those who would argue that “The Wall” is a better concept, but “Dark Side” captures the group when it really was a group, and not just Roger Waters’ backup band. All four members contributed their talents to the songwriting and arranging. The aural quality of this 1973 record is still amazing, and producer/engineer Alan Parsons built a career on his reputation from this record alone. (Parsons also worked as an engineer on Beatles records.) Each song is a classic, and that’s something that no one can say about “The Wall” (e.g., “Vera,” “Bring the Boys back Home”). This is possibly the greatest concept album of all.

“Blood on the Tracks” – Bob Dylan.

There are arguments to be made that “Bringing It All Back Home,” “Highway 61 Revisited” or “Blonde on Blonde” are better Dylan albums. These were

recorded at the peak of Dylan’s 1960s creativity, and each disc is replete with a multitude of classic songs that shaped and changed rock and roll. But as an JOHN album, I still prefer BARTUS “Blood on the Tracks.” The acousis a City Council member and Vice tic-based production is understated, Mayor of the City of Marathon. From the relationship saga of “Tangled Up in Blue” to the closer “Buckets of Rain,” this album chronicles every thing and every emotion one can find in a romantic relationship. Even the bitter and angry “Idiot Wind” closes with the realization that it takes two to tango, and that the singer may be just as much at fault as the object of his vitriol.

“Wildflowers” – Tom Petty. While “Blood on the Tracks” was Dylan’s breakup album, “Wildflowers” was Petty’s turn at disillusionment. Tracks like the title cut, “You Don’t Know How it Feels,” “Don’t Fade on Me,” and “Only a Broken Heart” hint at the sorrow and regret the singer feels at the end of a relationship. Even rockers like “You Wreck Me” and “Honey Bee” have a bittersweet quality. Two songs hint at the hard times ahead: “Time to Move On” and the closer, “Wake Up Time.”

In both, the singer is resigned to pick up the pieces and keep going on, even if he seems to be singing it to himself in the latter song. What makes this album stand out among the rest of Petty’s amazing catalog is the quality of the songs, and the absolutely impeccable production of Rick Rubin (along with Tom and Mike Campbell). Hearing this album on a good pair of speakers or good headphones places the listener in the studio with the band as it’s being recorded. Every note counts, every part is essential, there is absolutely no fluff.

ith August being Early Learning Month, the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/ Monroe is urging parents to enroll their 4-year-olds into free pre-K programs throughout the Keys.

There are 24 licensed schools from MM 0 to MM 105.5, and children should be 4 years old before Sept. 1.

Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers sits on the Early Learning Coalition and is leading the drive to get kids enrolled.

“I’ve been involved with a lot of the early learning programs and it came to my attention there are a lot of people who don’t seem to know this is available to them,” she said. “This has been out there a while, and we want to make sure that folks know this is an option for them.”

Evilio Torres, president and CEO of the Early Learning Coalition, said that since 85 percent of a child’s brain develops before the age of 5, making exposure to high-quality early education at an early age is extremely important to overall development.

“Our hope is that the August rally will help inform parents that free prekindergarten is available throughout the Keys and that it’s a very simple process for them to enroll their child in a program,” he said.

The state Office of Early Learning pays for the program.

Five-year-olds can also qualify.

Big Pine Key is one of the biggest inhabited islands in the Florida Keys chain and home to some of the most diverse creatures (not the guy at the bar at Coconuts) that thrive in the Keys, including endangered species from miniature deer to blue butterflies. Take a trip to the island and live like a local while exploring the ponds and rocklands, decorating dollar bills, and finding treasures from local artisans.

EXPLORE Blue Hole and Watson Trail The Blue Hole is home to two American alligators and a wide variety of freshwater fish and turtles and saltwater fish like tarpon that share a home together thanks to a freshwater lens that sits on top of the saltwater rock quarry.

A short distance past the Blue Hole is Jack Watson Trail, two trails that bring hikers though the pine rocklands of Big Pine Key. With slash pines and solution holes, there is a nice viewing deck on the left-hand trail as well as information tags along to help identify trees and Big Pine Key history. The right-hand trail is less than a mile and loops around.

EAT No Name Pub No trip to Big Pine Key is complete without sticking a dollar on the famous No Name Pub walls. Known for having more than $250,000 on the walls, The Pub also has some of the best pizza, fritters, and taco salad on the Pine. One of the ultimate favorites is the homemade, house-cut silver dollar fries. Here are the step-by-step directions on how to actually find the place: turn down Wilder Road at the Big Pine Key stoplight (the only stoplight on the island and the road is on the right of Winn Dixie Plaza) follow Wilder to the stop sign and make a left, follow that road around the right-hand curve, over a little bridge, keep going around a couple more curves (WATCH FOR KEY DEER!) and your destination is on your left shortly past the Doctor’s Arm community sign. If you go over “the old wooden bridge,” which is actually not wooden anymore, onto No Name Key, you have gone too far.
