Lobster mini-season, the two-day event that lures thousands of boaters and divers into Keys’ waters, has finally come to an end. Some say the event adds a needed boost to the economy, while others argue the stimulus is limited and mini-season has detrimental effects on our reefs and waters. But who doesn’t love a tradition on the water paired with six lobsters per day? Either way, bobbing for bugs is not going to end, but we asked locals…

How would you improve lobster mini-season?

“I feel as if there are too many ways people bend the rules,” said Andrew Chandler. “I noticed the other day a family arriving with elderly parents so old they could barely walk without help, but this means they ‘get their six too.’ If you didn’t dive for it yourself, it shouldn’t count. … I also think that a toll would help us with cleaning up after they come to trash our islands.”

slamorada village residents could see a slight tax hike for the upcoming fiscal year, to be discussed during three budget workshops next week.

At its July 19 meeting, the Village Council set a proposed millage rate of 3.2 mills, or $3.20 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

That equates to $1,920 for the owner of a $600,000 home.

Islamorada’s taxable value is $3.5 billion, up from $3.28 billion in fiscal year 2017.

The rollback rate, the rate necessary to generate the same amount of ad valorem taxes, would be 2.6467 mills.

“If we were to adopt a rate of 3.2, that would be a 20.9 percent increase over the rollback rate,” said Deputy City Manager Maria Bassett.

She added, due to a number of projects in the strategic plan and improvements to conservation properties, “establishing a higher millage rate for funding priorities seemed prudent.”

“Additionally, at this time as you’re aware our unassigned balance is projected to be at $0 or less due to Hurricane Irma response and recovery activities,” she said.

The final millage rate won’t be adopted until the second budget hearing in September.

Councilman Jim Mooney pointed out some municipalities in the Keys have met their rollback rates year after year.

“You want to ask them how their bank account looks after the hurricane? We were fortunate to get cleaned up because we were smart enough not to just get beat up and roll it back and have to borrow $30 million to clean up the city,” he said. “We can’t be foolish enough to think we’re not going to need money in the coffers again for some kind of recovery. I just want the public to understand 3.2 is a great number to start with and it allows us to move left or right.”

Budget workships start at 3 p.m., Aug. 7-9.

Last straw Council also approved banning the distribution, use and sale of plastic straws within the village, in line with several other municipalities statewide.

“A straw provided for imbibing, made predominantly of plastic,” was the definition given by village attorney Roget Bryan.

Sale or distribution could result in a civic penalty of $250, consistent with the village’s balloon ban in 2016.

The ordinance passed unanimously.

Bryan pointed out: “Marriot International has joined the fight against plastic straws. They announced a plan to ban or remove 1 billion straws and 250 million stirrers from all 6,500 hotels.”

VETERANS VISIT KEYS Fifteen Veterans from the VA Hospital in Miami visit the Florida Keys Elks Lodge in Tavernier for lunch and bingo on July 30 as one of their recreational outings. Giving thanks Dear Editor, It is a bittersweet time for me because I sold the Sunset Inn after caring for it 16 years. My late husband, Larry, and I purchased this property in 2002 as our retirement plan. It became our baby, a work of love and dedication. While I am not ready to retire, I’m down-sizing and I still own and operate Key Lantern and Blue Fin motels. There are endless people that I want to thank for making Sunset Inn the special and unique place it has been for the nearly two decades that I owned it. Though the list is long, I do want to take a moment to thank a few people who made this journey possible.

My Dad and Mother for instilling in me integrity and a strong work ethic, and my sister, Ko, for being there to listen at all hours of the day and night.

Hunter Padgett, the banker who helped with the financing, so Larry and I could make a dream come true. This was all made possible with a 16-year SBA loan with fixed interest and a matching loan from the former TIB bank.

Previous owner, Dr. Peter Mehta, for selling and Mark Gregg for being the closing attorney for the original sale. That was a day I will never forget.

Mike Forster and Mangrove Mike’s Cafe were there from the beginning. The partnership was much more than landlord/tenant.

It developed into a lifelong friendship. Always a friend to Larry and me, and one of my biggest cheerleaders.

Judy Hull for being such a dear friend when I lost Larry and needed some encouragement that all would be okay.

Pasta Pantaleo stepped up and helped me put back that iconic historical look on the doorway arch sign after Hurricane Irma tore through this town. He was my white knight that saved the day. Pasta repainted the Sunset Inn sign above the doors.

There are many others who helped make Sunset Inn a historical landmark of the community. Please know how much I appreciate you and I hope to offer my personal thanks in the days and weeks to come.

So the sun has set on another chapter of my life. It was a beautiful chapter. It’s a chapter I will remember forever. I still have chapters to write in Islamorada. I am NOT leaving. I still have the Key Lantern and Blue Fin motels. I still sit on Council and hope to serve my community another term. Even after that, I plan to stay where I have called home for 25 years.

Even though my previous life says I should call myself a Hoosier and a Hawkeye, I am a Conch by virtue of my love for this Village. This Village is a very special place that I am honored to call home Thank you everyone.

MEADS TO SEEK RE-ELECTION Purdo wants return to office

slamorada Village Councilmember Cheryl Meads is seeking re-election and will be challenged by former councilmember David Purdo for Seat 2 on the dais.

“I really do love it,” she said. “It was a tough first year, but now everything is good.”

As of Tuesday, Meads has yet to file paperwork, but qualifying does not begin until Aug. 14 and closes on Aug. 21.

Meads and her husband became Islamorada residents more than seven years ago. Their son is enrolled in a private high school in Winter Park, Florida and Meads said she slips away to visit him about once a month.

She is facing Capt. David Purdo, whom she defeated as a political newcomer in 2016.

Purdo is a former Detroit police officer who moved to the Keys 41 years ago. He served two terms on the Village Council, from 2010-2104.

“I am unhappy with the current council,” said Purdo.

“I am not in favor of the pedestrian bridge and I don’t want to see taxes raised.”

Purdo said his top priorities are affordable housing and fighting “Big Sugar” to enhance nearshore water quality.

He also supports the referendum to extend and stagger the terms and hopes to eliminate districts in the future in favor of an at-large election.

Meads is not in favor of longer terms and voted against the ordinance when presented to the council.

When reflecting on her first term in office, she refers to the strategic plan as a recent accomplishment and is proud of the recent advances of the building department to help streamline the permit process. She does feel there is more work to be done.

“Residents should be able to do stuff on their home without complications,” she added.

There are no other challengers for the other four seats on the village council. The incumbents include Deb Gillis (Seat 1), Jim Mooney (Seat 3) and Mike Forster (Seat 5). With current mayor Chris Sante (Seat 4) opting not to run again, Ken Davis looks to secure unless another candidate qualifies.

‘SCIENCE ALWAYS WINS’

Favorite thing about teaching: Teaching, just like any professor. It just comes naturally.

My course is approved by the American Medical Association for doctors.

You have a glacier named after you. How did that happen?

For my work as a HAM radio operator and meteorologist at the South Pole Station. I spent five-and-a-half years in the Polar Regions in late ’50s and early ’60s. Back then there were no big cities like there are now. They used to drop things to us.

he list of awards and accolades on the wall of Hyperbaric International in Key Largo is endless.

The acclaim belongs to owner Dick Rutkowski, who has done more than there is space to tell for the diving world. If you were one of the roughly 1,000 U.S. SCUBA divers who annually experience “the bends,” or decompression sickness, you would most likely spend some time in a hyperbaric chamber under the care of people trained in the fundamentals of Rutkowski’s advanced training program. The first medical diving training took place at his hyperbaric facility in 1975 in Dade County.

He has treated or helped treat thousands of divers and helped build an unknown number of hyperbaric facilities for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He was part of NOAA before it even was NOAA, and has spent time at some of the coldest places on Earth. That includes two years at the South Pole with the U.S. Navy, where the warmest it ever got was minus 19 degrees. It’s no wonder he chose the Keys as his permanent home.

On Aug. 1, he’ll give a presentation at the History of Diving Museum at the opening of its new exhibit, “Pushing The Envelope.” It’s all about the people, projects and technologies behind diving and what it is today.

‘I never loved it. I just fell into it. I haven’t been diving since 1987.’

Handiest skill: Teaching about undersea gases and life support systems.

Biggest inspiration: One was Dr. Morgan Wells. I worked with him for 50 years. Between him and me, we started the NOAA diving program and the physicians’ course for diving. Oh, and Dr. Loenhurst, we worked together for 35 years. He takes the medical responsibility.

What would you take with you on an island: Food or water.

I could get along without the women.

What would your autobiography be titled: “Science Always Wins Over Bullshit.”

Dream meal: You’d have to be crazy not to want to be with the President Donald Trump.

Full name: Richard “Dick” Rutkowski Family life: I was married three times. No kids, thank God. If I was married, I’d never be who I am today.

How did you end up in Key Largo? I had set up a couple of hyperbaric facilities in Turks and Caicos and Costa Rica and different places, but back in the 1970s and ’80s, I had a buddy here from Ocean Divers, so I set up the chamber there.

We hear you hang out at Sharkey’s every day. Favorite meal?

I don’t eat there. I go for a couple beers around 4:30, and I go there mainly at that particular time and particular table for the camaraderie because I have so many people who come in from around the world and talk with me.

What are you going to talk about on opening night of the new exhibit? The use of oxygen-enriched air nitrox. That’s all anyone knows me for. They don’t know about the 8,000 people I’ve put through the hyperbaric course.

How did you get into diving? In 1965, I left polar operations for the U.S. Navy and joined Atlantic Oceanographic Meteorological Lab in Miami, which in 1970 became NOAA. I was sent to commercial diving school by AOML/ESSA in 1967 to begin diver training for scientific government underwater operations.

What made you love it and stick with it? I never loved it. I just fell into it. I haven’t been diving since 1987. It was just a matter of “Go to commercial diving school and start teaching scientists how to get in the water.”

Favorite Keysy thing to do: I don’t do much. I don’t travel any more - I traveled all my life.

I’ve been to over 30 countries to teach classes and help build hyperbaric facilities.

How many awards have you won? I’ve got every award already but Miss Universe.

Favorite place you’ve lived: New Zealand. I was there in the ’50s Favorite dive spot? The Great Barrier Reef in Australia and Truk Lagoon (now known as Chuuk Lagoon) in Micronesia. After the U.S. Navy sank 12 Japanese warships, 32 merchant ships and 275 planes in during WWII, it became a haven for SCUBA wreck diving. It is known as the “biggest graveyard of ships in the world.”

QUESTIONS 1.) Do you think Monroe County and Keys municipalities should rewrite their respective land development regulations in order to accept the potential 1,300 affordable housing units that could be built in the Keys?

2.) On the ballot this year, voters will answer a referendum question about raising taxes to support school safety measures. Recently, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners decided to create a municipal service taxing district to raise funds for costs incurred

by Baptist Health South Florida’s Fishermen’s hospital for indigent care. The BOCC moved to create the taxing district without putting the question to voters on a referendum.

Would you have supported this decision, or put the question to the voters?

3.) The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has the authority to direct the Tourism Development Council and the funds it collects via the bed tax. The TDC advertises the Keys, supports cultural events, and funds the construction of brick-and-mortar projects. Please rank these three endeavors in order of importance.

Monroe County Mayor David Rice has been living in the Keys for 45 years and has served three four-year terms on the County Commission. He’s been mayor for one year. Rice founded the Guidance Clinic of the Middle Keys, serving as its executive director for more than 30 years before his retirement in 2006.

Following retirement, he continued his private consulting practice through 2013. He is married to Mary Rice and they have two children, Lisa and Michael.

• Top three issues: affordable housing, protecting the environment, and resolving excessive traffic issues.

• Campaign website: n/a 1.) The 1,300 affordable permits being offered cannot only provide very needed affordable housing, but they can also reduce our potential takings liability in the range of $130 million to $250 million thus protecting the taxpayer. It would also potentially encourage the State to share responsibility for payment of takings cases, which have a total estimated liability in the range of $500 million. Given the information available today, I am leaning toward approval.

2.) I did support the municipal taxing district without a referendum based on two factors: I believe that the Community needs the hospital to be built as quickly as possible. And, the overwhelming level of public support as evidenced by resolutions of support from the Marathon City Council, the Key Colony Beach City Council, Marathon Chamber of Commerce, Marathon Rotary and Zonta made the outcome of a referendum entirely predictable and therefore unnecessary considering the delay that would be created by the referendum process.

3.) It should be noted that without TDC advertising, funds would not be available to support either cultural events or brick-and-mortar projects. Therefore, I would rank them as follows: a. TDC advertising, b. Cultural events, c. Brickand-mortar projects.

• Campaign website: www.VickiTashjian.com 1.) Yes, I do. There certainly are details to work out and ROGO comes into play. With Marathon, Key West and Islamorada wanting 300 each, I would hope the state and the county can come to some type of agreement to offset the ROGO obstruction and rewrite the land development regulations at an urgent pace, as we need more relief now for future home buyers and longterm rentals.

2.) We elect members to the BOCC to be the eyes, ears, and decision makers for us, but also bring very important items out to vote by the people. At this point in time, no. This is for ONE YEAR. Then it comes up again. A referendum will lock us in for 10 YEARS! While I want to live in an area where basic hospital abilities and emergency room service for high fevered children, gaff in foot, etc. are available, it is important for how it is to be sustained.

3.) The direction for the tourism marketing effort is to be in a manner that will assure longterm sustained growth in tourism revenues while also guaranteeing the sustainability and improvement of our product, man-made and natural, and improvements to the quality of life of our residents. The balance between advertising, cultural events and projects is delicate. One does not survive without the other.

KEYS HISTORY Richard Fitzpatrick left lasting impact BRAD BERTELLI

W

hile the name Richard Fitzpatrick might not sound familiar, it is a name associated with significant change in the Florida Keys. To say his work was far-reaching would not be hyperbolic. Fitzpatrick was born circa 1792 in Columbia, S.C. He is thought to have arrived in Key West around 1822 and was reportedly authorized as a wrecking auctioneer. Fitzpatrick also invested heavily in land. By 1835 he had purchased about four square miles surrounding the Miami River and one square mile surrounding the New River. He purchased the roughly 3,300 acres for 81 cents per acre.

Fitzpatrick also entered into the territorial political scene, serving as both a justice of the peace and as a powerful member of the Territorial Legislative Council. In 1836, Fitzpatrick not only represented Monroe County at the legislative session, but also served as president of the legislative council. It was during this session that Fitzpatrick presented a petition signed by residents of Key Vaca, Indian Key, and Cape Florida, requesting the creation of a new county.

The first signature on the petition was Indian Key’s notorious wrecker Jacob Housman – the petition had likely been Housman’s idea. When the petition was first drafted, the proposed name for the newly created county was to be Pinckney County.

The petition was unanimously passed Jan. 28, 1836, but the name was changed to Dade County in honor of Major Francis L. Dade. Dade and his Company B had departed Key West aboard a military transport on Dec. 21, 1835. The company arrived at Tampa Bay’s Fort Brooke and two days later a regiment of more than 100 men began their march to Fort King near present-day Ocala. The column was attacked on Dec. 28. Three men survived what history remembers as the Dade Massacre. Fort Dallas was created on Fitzpatrick’s Miami River property.

Fitzpatrick designated the county seat of the newly created Dade County at Indian Key. The Legislative Council appointed three justices of the peace: William Cooley, whose family had been killed by Seminole Indians just weeks prior on Jan. 6; Lemuel Otis, recognized today as Monroe County’s first sheriff; and the former mayor of Key West, William Whitehead, who had since moved to Key Vaca. Dade County’s principal communities were at Key Vaca, Indian Key, and Cape Florida. Key West’s Fitzpatrick Street is named for Richard Fitzpatrick.

$90M approved in Keys DEO grants

A

s the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Irma approaches, so does a major chunk of federal funding for the Florida

Keys.

The money has flowed from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program.

“We allocated a minimum of $90 million to go to Monroe County,” said Tiffany Vause, director of communications for the state DEO. “There could potentially be more, but at least $90 million is on the way.”

She recently met with officials in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West to talk about the money and other issues.

The $90 million encompasses three different groups in need: businesses, homeowners, and local municipalities.

When the grant website launches in the coming months, there will be three options to apply for the grants, which do not require a match.

Depending on the eligibility of the applicant, money will be granted from different programs.

“We are explaining it as, there are three areas. You click the one that applies to your situation most and we’re going to help you from there,” Vause said. “We’ll have the website, and people on the ground in the Keys along with a phone line for help.”

Aside from the business and government grants, these are some of the housing programs:

Housing Repair Program Designated for low- and moderate-income families, the money will be used to rehab or replace singlefamily and rental homes affected by Irma. The state will work with a pool of qualified contractors assigned to repair, reconstruct or replace damaged properties. Applicants will be assigned a contractor and will be required to enter into agreements with the state setting forth the terms and conditions of the program.

Workforce Affordable Rental New Construction Program The program will help address the shortage of housing. DEO will work with the Florida Housing Finance Corporation (FHFC) to leverage CDBGDR funds with low-income housing tax credits with or without tax-exempt bond financing for larger multi-family developments as well as use standalone CDBG-DR funds as zero-interest loans to create smaller, multi-family developments. Funds will be awarded through a competitive process to qualified developers.

County Commission candidates talk District 2 issues After the Aug. 28 primary election, two candidates out of four will be listed for District 2’s Monroe County Commission general election. Three Republicans are in the primary election race for the district, which spans about 40 miles from Boca Chica Key in the Lower Keys north to the bayside portion of Marathon up to 63rd Street. The Republican winner will face the Democratic candidate in the general election in November.

QUESTIONS 1.) Do you think Monroe County and Keys municipalities should rewrite their respective land development regulations in order to accept the potential 1,300 affordable housing units that could be built in the Keys?

2.) On the ballot this year, voters will answer a referendum question about raising taxes to support school safety measures. Recently, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners decided to create a municipal service taxing district to raise funds for costs incurred by Baptist Health South Florida’s Fishermen’s hospital for indigent care. The BOCC moved to create the taxing district without putting the question to voters on a referendum. Would you have supported this decision, or put the question to the voters?

3.) The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has the authority to direct the Tourism Development Council and the funds it collects via the bed tax. The TDC advertises the Keys, supports cultural events, and funds the construction of brick-andmortar projects. Please rank these three endeavors in order of importance.

Big Pine Key Realtor Debbie Halama said after attending Miami-Dade Community College, she found her true calling in real estate. She has multiple certifications in the industry. Halama spent 11 years in Germany working for the Army and Air Force Exchange Services and upon returning to Florida in the late 1990s started working for First State Bank in the Lower Keys. In 2004, she became a Realtor, and currently specializes in bank-owned properties. Since 2012, she and her family have also operated Molly’s Pawn and More on Big Pine Key. She is married and has two sons.

District 2 has been allotted 300 units, and as a Commissioner I think it is in our best interest to accept and hold on to those. Each district needs to have a voice in the use or the non-use of units in their district. We have a build out approaching in 2023, at that time we may need to look at redeveloping our land, but I do not think we need to rewrite the land development regulations just yet. Also, I am not a proponent of forcing residents of those units to evacuate 48 hours prior to a Hurricane.

2.) As a county commissioner I am there to represent the people, and firmly believe they deserve a voice and a vote in matters such as this. You cannot have taxation without representation.

I believe what has happened to the people of Marathon was a classic bait and switch and there is more to this than the rebuilding of a hospital so desperately needed in the Middle Keys.

3.) If you don’t advertise, you don’t have tourists.

That should take priority, followed by Cultural events. We are more than the “Duval Crawl” and the arts need to be further and equally promoted.

As a member of the DAC 2 Advisory Board, I have found very few proposals for brick and mortar projects in the Lower Keys, and believe this is an area we need to tap into as we rebuild our District. Going forward, I would like to see more transparency from the TDC and additional public input on our brick and mortar projects.

MICHELLE COLDIRON (R)

Elected to Marathon City Council for a threeyear term in 2015, Coldiron has been mayor for the last year. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Kentucky University and graduated from Florida League of Cities’ Institute for Elected Municipal Officials. She’s vice president of Global Health Connection, Inc. and is a former child advocate coordinator for the Guardian ad Litem Program. Coldiron is married to Greg Coldiron and has one daughter, Mallory Morton. Coldiron has been a full-time resident for 18 years.

• Top three issues: Workforce housing, longterm recovery from Hurricane Irma, and the environment.

These additional units can definitely help alleviate some of the workforce housing crisis however, the Comprehensive Plan must address evacuation during the first 24 hours of a hurricane. The Municipalities can accept 300 units each with the additional 400 being available to the county. In order to accept the affordable housing units, the language in the Land Development Regulations and the Comprehensive Plan will need to be modified. The Department of Economic Opportunity will have to approve the LDR and Comprehensive Plan changes before the units can be allocated. If the changes are approved, the units should be accepted.

2.) Nobody, myself included, likes additional taxes.

I prefer referendums. However, at stake is the vital critical care hospital. Had this gone to public vote, I’m confident it would have passed, but the referendum would have bound us to a 10 year property tax without the BOCC’s annual review. The way it was approved, the BOCC guaranteed that Baptist Hospital must request the tax each year and, in full transparency, show how the money is utilized and justify its continued need or it stops. As an elected official, I understand that tough decisions have to be made to protect our residents.

3.) Tourism is the top economic driver for the Florida Keys. All three components are equally important to the success of our economy and, subsequently, the quality of life for our residents.

It is important that we keep advertising to retain market share and attract new visitors. TDC funds support the maintenance and improvement of our beaches and parks, as well as improvements to nonprofit attractions. These amenities are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Funding the events helps provide entertaining activities and quality times for all of us.

CHARLES WEITZEL (R)

Charles Weitzel bought his first property in the Keys in 1980, the same year he graduated from Rutgers University. He’s been a certified public accountant in Florida since 1995 when he moved to the Keys full time. He’s also a charter boat captain and SCUBA instructor. Weitzel is single and has no children.

• Top three issues: workforce housing, illegal transient rentals, and employee retention.

Site: none 1.) The answer to this complex issue is YES, (with conditions). Carrying Capacity, Sustainability, Continued Growth, and Hurricane Evacuation must be balanced. High-density workforce housing should only be allowed in certain areas in Key West and Marathon. The rural residential neighborhoods should be protected. The destruction of the mobile home parks and the transfer of those rights to other locations must stop immediately.

2.) Taxation without representation is WRONG!!!

The attitude that “WE KNOW BETTER THAN THE VOTERS” is contrary to my core beliefs. The rush to approve the taxing district without ever explaining why there was a need for such a rush frustrates me. If they were so sure it would pass, why not take it to a referendum? The same BOCC voted to increase the fees for permits at the previous meeting and said something like “IT WAS OK SINCE NO ONE COMPLAINED.” I do not shy away from making life’s tough decisions, but when you are spending another person’s money, they should be heard.

3.) All three of these endeavors are necessary and inter-related and need to be balanced for the greatest good to the community. The TDC currently has five District Advisory Committees. These DACs are made up on individuals that represent specific areas and are knowledgeable about the needs of those areas. The recommendations of these DACs should be discussed at the monthly BOCC meetings. The BOCC regularly passes “IN BULK” approval for millions of dollars in expenditures without even a discussion of any of the items being funded. I would recommend that all future approvals include a discussion to the items being approved.

THOMAS “TOMMY” RYAN (D)

U.S. Army veteran Tommy Ryan attended the police academy at West Point, after which he started his 21-year-long career as a New York City firefighter. He and husband Jon Baird live on Big Pine Key. Ryan has three adult children from a previous marriage and also adopted a set of twin girls while they were in high school.

• Top three issues: hurricane preparedness, both pre- and post-storm, the environment (protecting the water that surrounds us and the water we drink), and seniors and children.

Accepting these ROGO’s is another example of the State chipping away at Home Rule. Monroe County has for years worked on its land development regulations so that the Keys aren’t over crowded. What’s to stop another Governor from issuing 8,000 ROGO’s that will insure every square inch of the Keys are over built?

The big question is also how do you enforce the 48 hour storm exit clause?

2.) I do not agree with the vote on the Baptist Hospital Tax District. I fully believe that it should have gone out for a vote. Baptist bought Fisherman’s Hospital just before the hurricane last year, they bought it with the full knowledge that it was a failing hospital. Baptist at first was asking for money to rebuild the hospital but then it became a question of helping to pay for uninsured patients.

Again this is a known problem associated with any hospital in the country (speaks to our national problem of Healthcare).

3) The TDC is an important part of our economy and has been instrumental in keeping tourist coming here to the Keys. I do however at this time feel that the TDC should be more focused on Bricks and Mortar projects, especially in light of a Cat 4 Hurricane coming through the Keys. The recent allocations from the TDC all but ignored the county’s second district (the hardest hit by Irma).

Next for me would be cultural events. These events are great for both the locals and for tourists. The TDC seems to manage this part the best.

RECRUITING LEADERS Leadership Monroe County hosts social at Cheeca Lodge Monroe County can be a challenging place to run a non-profit, effect change, manage a business or further a cause. However, there is a program designed to educate and build relationships that will ultimately help produce better leaders. Leadership Monroe County graduated its first class 26 years ago and is recruiting for the class set to begin in October. CFFK GETS NEW BOARD MEMBERS The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) has two new members of its Board of Governors. Mary Barley, of Islamorada, and John DeWald, of Key West, have joined the board for a three-year term.

“These two community leaders bring incredible local business and community expertise to our board” said Ron Burd, CFFK board chair. “They will be a great help in our efforts to strengthen nonprofit organizations and work with our donor partners throughout the Keys.”

Barley is a major supporter of wildlife and environmental issues.

She serves on numerous boards and councils, including chair of The Everglades Trust, and member of the History and Discovery Center, the Upper Keys Foundation, the Everglades Foundation, World Wildlife Fund Marine Leadership Committee, and National Mary Barley Parks Conservation Association, and many others. A long-time resident of Islamorada, Barley has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, including profiles in national magazines and newspapers, and was named a “Hero of the Planet” by TIME magazine.

DeWald is a retired senior executive, having worked for more than 40 years in the broadcast entertainment industry, most recently as a senior executive of program operations for NBCComcast. His positions have included overseeing administrative, financial, managerial and logistical operations for the television John DeWald network as well as NBC News and Sports. He has served on a number of community boards, including The Clockwork Theatre Company in New York, and is treasurer of 35 Sutton Owner’s Corporation. He also has been a volunteer educational mentor for the Take Stock in Children program in Monroe County.

The Community Foundation and its funding partners have granted more than $26 million to the community since 1996, helping residents from Key West to Key Largo through grants to local nonprofit partners, scholarships and program services. Former Huffington Post editor has a new memoir SARAH THOMAS

he South Florida ’60s and ’70s childhood of Roy Sekoff was one made for the movies. He didn’t know at the time that he would wind up in Los Angeles as a screenwriter.

In one of the many stories in his new memoir, Sekoff tells of visiting Bill Haast’s iconic Miami Serpentarium, marked by a giant cobra statue on the side of Dixie Highway. “Bill basically was the snake man. His real claim to fame was that he had been bitten by deadly snakes more than 100 times, and his blood became something like an antivenom.” At the climax of each show, Haast would milk the venom from a deadly poisonous snake with his bare hands.

Led by a beautiful blonde teacher whom Sekoff had “a horrible crush on,” Sekoff’s 4th grade class at Henry S. West Laboratory School embarked on a field trip to the Serpentarium.

(In defense of the school — and the Serpentarium — Haast was supplying the venom to medical researchers at University of Miami and developing antivenom.) The day the class visited “was one of the times Bill Haast got bit by the king cobra.” Sekoff recalls Haast’s wife and assistant Clarita, in particular, her soothing voice after the spectacle: “And that will conclude today’s show.”

Marked by signature wit and unsentimental Americana, Sekoff’s memoir, “Lacks Self Control: True Stories I Waited Until My Parents Died to Tell,” was published June 12. The Miami area not only provided comedic material, but also served as the original inspiration for Sekoff’s foray into the literary world. His education up to graduate school all took place “within a mile of UM.” Sekoff attended University of Miami and received the fortuitous superlative “Funniest Man on Campus.”

Like Haast’s antivenom, Sekoff’s love of books may have been in his blood. His parents owned the Coral Gables-based independent bookstore Book Horizons – their slogan: “Serving UM since 1953.” Sekoff and his brothers grew up working in the store, a rite of passage in the family. “For most young

Jewish men, it’s a bar mitzvah, but for the Sekoff brothers, it’s going on a book buying trip with your dad.” His parents ran the store for 60 years. As the book title indicates, Sekoff’s parents passed away recently, his mother in 2015.

A creative writer from a young age, in whom teachers infamously saw promise but a “lack of self control,” Sekoff set his sights on Los Angeles. He wrote for a comedy magazine called “Laff Track,” which led him to interview celebrities including Michael Keaton and John Candy. “It was the early ’80s, and John Belushi said comedy was the new Rock n Roll,” Sekoff says, “but it was ten years early, before the internet, and distribution was our problem.” That is an ironic obstacle, as Sekoff eventually became the editor of the largest online news source in the world, The Huffington Post, and cocreator of HuffPost Live.

Sekoff wrote for Disney, Fox, NBC and Michael Moore’s Emmy Awardwinning “TV Nation.” In 2004, after George W. Bush’s re-election, Arianna Huffington approached Sekoff about a new project. “A few internet-savvy people said we need a progressive Drudge (Report), and that led to Huffington Post.”

Sekoff left the Huffington Post in 2015 to be more present with his family in Los Angeles. That’s when he returned to his roots and began to write the stories that would become “Lacks Self Control.” While Sekoff admires fellow Floridian novelists like Carl Hiaasen, he didn’t begin with strict expectations. “I didn’t say ‘this is a book.’ I just started writing the stories, and once I allowed myself that freedom, it was like a dam bursting.”

A short distance past the Blue Hole is Jack Watson Trail, two trails that bring hikers though the pine rocklands of Big Pine Key. With slash pines and solution holes, there is a nice viewing deck on the left-hand trail as well as information tags along to help identify trees and Big Pine Key history. The right-hand trail is less than a mile and loops around.

EAT No Name Pub No trip to Big Pine Key is complete without sticking a dollar on the famous No Name Pub walls. If you go over “the old wooden bridge,” which is actually not wooden anymore, onto No Name Key, you have gone too far.

Rafael Sanchez PA-C As far back as I can remember, my love for medicine started by the age of five or six years old. I have always had a fascination with the anatomy and physiology of all living things. I graduated from high school at the young age of sixteen. I then went on to Junior College for one year and played football. I then enlisted in the United States Air Force. While working as a security police officer I cross-trained into the Para Rescue Corps. That was my first true medical experience. After being honorably discharged, I joined The Air Force Reserve Corps and returned to school to become an operating room technician. I was going to study to become a doctor but while in my undergraduate studies, my career plans quickly changed from becoming an MD to pursuing the career of Physician’s Assistant. I graduated from the University of Southern California’s Physician’s Assistant program, in which I completed with honors both in school and national board certification. I started my career in Family Medicine and in Urgent Care Medicine in California. After thirteen years I moved permanently to the Florida Keys to join my father’s side of the family, which had been living in the Keys since the 1960s. I worked as a Clinical and Surgical Physician’s Assistant in Orthopedics for the next fifteen years. I became a big part of the Upper Keys community due to my involvement in high school football as a coach, and as a mentor to young men. I am the father of five children who have been privileged enough to serve our Keys community along with myself. I worked for approximately four years at the Good Health Community Clinic in Tavernier. Now, after 40 years in the Keys I have the privilege with the Advanced Urgent Care family to offer my community our new approach to affordable healthcare which is a core value to my practice of medicine, philosophy and ideology of patient care.
