ending Marathon City Council approval, 64 “truly affordable” housing units could go up at Coco Plum Drive and Avenue D. Developer Brian Schmitt called the project just what Middle Keys residents need, as a lot of projects labeled “affordable” are often the opposite. He’s working with Boynton Beach-based developer NuRock Companies and wants to level four buildings on Avenue D (currently housing 15 efficiences) along with a stretch of trees buffering a canal. They will potentially be replaced with seven elevated buildings containing two-bedroom, two-bathroom units.

Forty-five percent of the units will be rented for less than $1,000 per month, while the rest will be rented for around $1,382, Schmitt said.

“All of these units will be deed restricted as affordable in perpetuity and can only be rented to families whose income does not exceed those established by the City of Marathon,” Schmitt said. “They’ll all be concrete block buildings with brand new impact windows, built to the highest building code.”

Also, tenants living in the 15 units to be torn down will have the option to live in the new apartments. They will be accommodated at other locations during the construction.

After resident complaints about increased traffic because of the potential housing development, Schmitt

said, “We have taken particular care to address traffic, which will not have any adverse impacts on the residents of Coco Plum, as described by the traffic engineer.”

Pending the council’s approval, Schmitt will seek affordable housing permit allocations, either from the city or county. Marathon has given away all the units it had for affordable housing projects and is waiting on an allotment of 300 units from the state.

Schmitt will be able to keep the rents low if he receives approval from the Florida Housing Finance Corp., which grants developers tax credits for building lower-income housing. He’ll submit his application in the fall. The tax credit funding is a competitive process and is handled at the state level.

“These rents are in stark contrast to what a developer can charge for an affordable deed-restricted unit not built with tax credits,” Schmitt said. As an example, Tarpon Harbor charges $2,381 a month for a two-bedroom, two-bath unit.

Aside from the Coco Plum project, Schmitt has another project at MM 49.5 bayside, for which tax credit financing was approved last year.

“Those projects are moving forward toward commencement of construction and all 101 of the affordable allocations for those two adjoining projects came from Monroe County.

Those units are being designed by Keys Architects and also meet or exceed all of the code requirements for Marathon,” Schmitt said.

KEYS HISTORY Richard Fitzpatrick left lasting impact BRAD BERTELLI

hile the name Richard Fitzpatrick might not sound familiar, it is a name associated with significant change in the Florida Keys. To say his work was far-reaching would not be hyperbolic. Fitzpatrick was born circa 1792 in Columbia, S.C. He is thought to have arrived in Key West around 1822 and was reportedly authorized as a wrecking auctioneer. Fitzpatrick also invested heavily in land. By 1835 he had purchased about four square miles surrounding the Miami River and one square mile surrounding the New River. He purchased the roughly 3,300 acres for 81 cents per acre.

Fitzpatrick also entered into the territorial political scene, serving as both a justice of the peace and as a powerful member of the Territorial Legislative Council. In 1836, Fitzpatrick not only represented Monroe County at the legislative session, but also served as president of the legislative council. It was during this session that Fitzpatrick presented a petition signed by residents of Key Vaca, Indian Key, and Cape Florida, requesting the creation of a new county.

The first signature on the petition was Indian Key’s notorious wrecker Jacob Housman – the petition had likely been Housman’s idea. When the petition was first drafted, the proposed name for the newly created county was to be Pinckney County.

The petition was unanimously passed Jan. 28, 1836, but the name was changed to Dade County in honor of Major Francis L. Dade. Dade and his Company B had departed Key West aboard a military transport on Dec. 21, 1835. The company arrived at Tampa Bay’s Fort Brooke and two days later a regiment of more than 100 men began their march to Fort King near present-day Ocala. The column was attacked on Dec. 28. Three men survived what history remembers as the Dade Massacre. Fort Dallas was created on Fitzpatrick’s Miami River property.

Fitzpatrick designated the county seat of the newly created Dade County at Indian Key. The Legislative Council appointed three justices of the peace: William Cooley, whose family had been killed by Seminole Indians just weeks prior on Jan. 6; Lemuel Otis, recognized today as Monroe County’s first sheriff; and the former mayor of Key West, William Whitehead, who had since moved to Key Vaca. Dade County’s principal communities were at Key Vaca, Indian Key, and Cape Florida. Key West’s Fitzpatrick Street is named for Richard Fitzpatrick.

f the 77 instructional vacancies in the Monroe County School District, there are still about 18 to fill before school begins on Aug. 15 — most of them concentrated in the Middle Keys and at Horace O’Bryant School in Key West.

There are fewer instructional vacancies this year than in years past.

So the suggestions that Hurricane Irma emptied Keys schools of teachers and students is more myth than math.

According to data provided by the district, there were about 120 teacher positions turning over going into the 2015-2016 school year, 98 in the 2016-2017 school year, and 100 in the 2017-2018 school year — just a month before Hurricane Irma hit. Of the 77 teacher vacancies reported going into this year, all but 18 have been filled.

Yet, school officials caution, the situation is still uncertain.

District Human Resources Director Ramon Dawkins said retention efforts have met with success, but when drilling down the numbers by geographic location, high turnover rates in the Middle Keys and Key West reflect the housing issues exacerbated by Hurricane Irma.

“The raw numbers are not that different from past years, but the future looks a little different over the next several weeks,” said Superintendent Mark Porter. He said applications are beginning to slow. “The principals’ applicant pool looks a little different and not as robust.”

Many in the Keys have been watching student and staffing levels at schools as a possible indicator of population loss. The school district is the second largest employer — with about 1,100 employees — second only to the U.S. military’s presence in the Keys.

As to how many students will be “missing” on Aug. 15, it’s anybody’s guess.

“We really rely on (individual schools) to be the underground network,” Porter said. “No one has come to us with fears about losing students.”

IN OTHER NEWS: • The school district took its first look at the budget on July 24. Hearings will be held at Marathon High School on Wednesday, Aug. 8, and at Coral Shores High School on Tuesday, Sept.

11. The district is proposing a tax of 3.37 mills. A non-homesteaded home valued at $500,000 would pay about $1,600 in school taxes — or about $42.28 more than last year. The increase, the district said, is to cover the additional state-mandated safety and security measures.

• The earliest the school district could break ground on housing planned for Sugarloaf is June 2019, due to delays in changing land-use designations. On July 31, board members and district administrators listened to proposals from several community members interested in seeing workforce housing available at the Administration Annex on Trumbo Road.

A

s the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Irma approaches, so does a major chunk of federal funding for the Florida

Keys.

The money has flowed from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program.

“We allocated a minimum of $90 million to go to Monroe County,” said Tiffany Vause, director of communications for the state DEO. “There could potentially be more, but at least $90 million is on the way.”

She recently met with officials in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West to talk about the money and other issues.

The $90 million encompasses three different groups in need: businesses, homeowners, and local municipalities.

When the grant website launches in the coming months, there will be three options to apply for the grants, which do not require a match.

Depending on the eligibility of the applicant, money will be granted from different programs.

“We are explaining it as, there are three areas. You click the one that applies to your situation most and we’re going to help you from there,” Vause said. “We’ll have the website, and people on the ground in the Keys along with a phone line for help.”

Aside from the business and government grants, these are some of the housing programs:

Housing Repair Program Designated for low- and moderate-income families, the money will be used to rehab or replace singlefamily and rental homes affected by Irma. The state will work with a pool of qualified contractors assigned to repair, reconstruct or replace damaged properties. Applicants will be assigned a contractor and will be required to enter into agreements with the state setting forth the terms and conditions of the program.

Workforce Affordable Rental New Construction Program The program will help address the shortage of housing. DEO will work with the Florida Housing Finance Corporation (FHFC) to leverage CDBGDR funds with low-income housing tax credits with or without tax-exempt bond financing for larger multi-family developments as well as use standalone CDBG-DR funds as zero-interest loans to create smaller, multi-family developments. Funds will be awarded through a competitive process to qualified developers.

Land Acquisition for Affordable Workforce Housing DEO will manage a program that will provide funding to purchase land for the development of affordable housing. This program will target areas of the state where scarcity of land increases the cost and makes it difficult to develop properties that can be rented at an affordable rate for the community’s workforce.

Voluntary Home Buyout Program DEO will create a voluntary program to encourage risk reduction through the voluntary purchase of residential property in high flood-risk areas. The Voluntary Home Buyout Program is a state-managed buyout program that leverages FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding, where possible.

National Night Out set for Tuesday

O

n Tuesday, August 7, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will sponsor National Night Out events in the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys. All of the events will feature food, refreshments, and a great chance to meet neighbors, members of the Sheriff’s Office from a wide variety of divisions, departments and special teams and many others who are involved in the field of public safety here in the Florida Keys.

“This annual event is important to us, because it’s an opportunity for us to meet the people we serve in a more relaxed setting,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “Please come out and bring the kids. Enjoy some food and meet the deputies who patrol your neighborhood.”

The goal of National Night Out is to bring the community together to discuss how to make neighborhoods cleaner, safer and more secure. The sheriff’s office will have drug- and crime-prevention information to share at the event.

The sheriff’s office hopes to generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Everyone participating will send a message to criminals letting them know that Monroe County neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

Each event — they’re scheduled in the Upper and Lower Keys as well — will feature displays of the sheriff’s office elite units such as the Dive Team, SWAT and Crime Scene Investigation, among others.

Other entities will be there, including the Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Highway Patrol, park services, Monroe County Fire Rescue and other fire districts, Monroe County schools, business chambers, and more.

The Marathon Night Out will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Marathon Community Park. Capt. Don Hiller and Lt. Derek Paul invite everyone to join them and have some fun.

There will be free food provided by American Legion Post 154 as well as refreshments; live music provided by the musical group “In Pursuit,” and residents will be able to visit many law enforcement, public safety and community groups that will have booths set up at the event.

Howard Morton Fry II John Bales Ermisch Feb. 7, 1931 – May 31, 2018

1932-2018

Howard “Tim” Morton Fry II, 87, died peacefully at home on May 31, 2018.

He was with his wife, Nancy (Nickerson); they were just a few days short of celebrating their 67th anniversary.

Tim grew up in Wyomissing, Pa., the son of Samuel and Margaret (Thun) Fry. He was predeceased by siblings Thomas M. Fry and Barbara Gosh, and survived by sister Victoria Guthrie.

A lifelong intellectual, he graduated from St. Paul’s School, Yale University and Harvard Law School.

He worked as an attorney, founding a law firm in Pennsylvania, then serving as general counsel of the U.S. Agency for International Development under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

While at law school, Tim contracted polio; however, he never complained or let that limit him. He and Nancy traveled the world, loved sharing hospitality with friends, adored their terriers and read voraciously.

An ardent Republican, he attended numerous Republican National Conventions and excelled as their finance chairman for the state of Pennsylvania.

Howard and Nancy were also longtime residents of Islamorada.

A gifted listener, interested in people, Tim served as a beloved mentor and guide for not only his four children and their spouses Victoria Saglio (Robert) and Julia Landstreet (Beverly), Westerly, Rhode Island; Allison (W.B. Dixon) Stroud, West Grove, Pa.; and Howard M. Fry III, Marathon, but also his nine grandchildren.

John Bales Ermisch, 86, of Key Colony Beach, formerly long-time resident of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away peacefully on July 21, 2018 at his daughter’s residence in Flint, Mich. Cremation has taken place; future interment will take place at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.

John was born May 26, 1932 in Terre Haute, Ind., to Herman Julius Ermisch and Mildred Celeste (Bales) Ermisch. He married Roslyn L. Wilson in Greenwood, Ind., on June 26, 1954.

John was the long-time owner/operator of Ermisch Cleaners in Terre Haute.

He was a life member of the Elks Club, Shrine Club, Moose Club, Sycamore Club, and an honorary member of the Sons of the American Legion. John enjoyed gardening, golfing, swimming, and was a huge basketball fan.

Surviving are: his beloved wife of 64 years, Roslyn; daughter, Karen (Ray) DelReal and their children, Michael Condon, Sean Condon, Jeffrey, Chris, and Jesse DelReal; son, Keith Ermisch and his children, John Kyan (Ciera) Ermisch, and Samantha J. Ermisch; and son, Karl Ermisch; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Linda Robinson.

Would you have supported this decision, or put the question to the voters?

The TDC advertises the Keys, supports cultural events, and funds the construction of brick-and-mortar projects. Please rank these three endeavors in order of importance.

Monroe County Mayor David Rice has been living in the Keys for 45 years and has served three four-year terms on the County Commission. He’s been mayor for one year. Rice founded the Guidance Clinic of the Middle Keys, serving as its executive director for more than 30 years before his retirement in 2006.

Following retirement, he continued his private consulting practice through 2013. He is married to Mary Rice and they have two children, Lisa and Michael.

• Top three issues: affordable housing, protecting the environment, and resolving excessive traffic issues.

• Campaign website: n/a 1.) The 1,300 affordable permits being offered cannot only provide very needed affordable housing, but they can also reduce our potential takings liability in the range of $130 million to $250 million thus protecting the taxpayer. It would also potentially encourage the State to share responsibility for payment of takings cases, which have a total estimated liability in the range of $500 million. Given the information available today, I am leaning toward approval.

2.) I did support the municipal taxing district without a referendum based on two factors: I believe that the Community needs the hospital to be built as quickly as possible. And, the overwhelming level of public support as evidenced by resolutions of support from the Marathon City Council, the Key Colony Beach City Council, Marathon Chamber of Commerce, Marathon Rotary and Zonta made the outcome of a referendum entirely predictable and therefore unnecessary considering the delay that would be created by the referendum process.

3.) It should be noted that without TDC advertising, funds would not be available to support either cultural events or brick-and-mortar projects. Therefore, I would rank them as follows: a. TDC advertising, b. Cultural events, c. Brickand-mortar projects.

A 26-year resident of Marathon, Vicki Tashjian’s campaign slogan is “Common sense solutions.”

She’s managing director of Florida Keys Vacations Inc. and completed some college in fashion merchandising and interior design. She has an extensive background in corporate hospitality. She is married to James Tashjian and has one adult son. This is her first run for office.

• Campaign website: www.VickiTashjian.com 1.) Yes, I do. There certainly are details to work out and ROGO comes into play. With Marathon, Key West and Islamorada wanting 300 each, I would hope the state and the county can come to some type of agreement to offset the ROGO obstruction and rewrite the land development regulations at an urgent pace, as we need more relief now for future home buyers and longterm rentals.

2.) We elect members to the BOCC to be the eyes, ears, and decision makers for us, but also bring very important items out to vote by the people. At this point in time, no. This is for ONE YEAR. Then it comes up again. A referendum will lock us in for 10 YEARS! While I want to live in an area where basic hospital abilities and emergency room service for high fevered children, gaff in foot, etc. are available, it is important for how it is to be sustained.

3.) The direction for the tourism marketing effort is to be in a manner that will assure longterm sustained growth in tourism revenues while also guaranteeing the sustainability and improvement of our product, man-made and natural, and improvements to the quality of life of our residents. The balance between advertising, cultural events and projects is delicate. One does not survive without the other.

County Commission candidates talk District 2 issues After the Aug. 28 primary election, two candidates out of four will be listed for District 2’s Monroe County Commission general election. Three Republicans are in the primary election race for the district, which spans about 40 miles from Boca Chica Key in the Lower Keys north to the bayside portion of Marathon up to 63rd Street. The Republican winner will face the Democratic candidate in the general election in November.

Big Pine Key Realtor Debbie Halama said after attending Miami-Dade Community College, she found her true calling in real estate. She has multiple certifications in the industry. Halama spent 11 years in Germany working for the Army and Air Force Exchange Services and upon returning to Florida in the late 1990s started working for First State Bank in the Lower Keys. In 2004, she became a Realtor, and currently specializes in bank-owned properties. Since 2012, she and her family have also operated Molly’s Pawn and More on Big Pine Key. She is married and has two sons.

District 2 has been allotted 300 units, and as a Commissioner I think it is in our best interest to accept and hold on to those. Each district needs to have a voice in the use or the non-use of units in their district. We have a build out approaching in 2023, at that time we may need to look at redeveloping our land, but I do not think we need to rewrite the land development regulations just yet. Also, I am not a proponent of forcing residents of those units to evacuate 48 hours prior to a Hurricane.

2.) As a county commissioner I am there to represent the people, and firmly believe they deserve a voice and a vote in matters such as this. You cannot have taxation without representation.

I believe what has happened to the people of Marathon was a classic bait and switch and there is more to this than the rebuilding of a hospital so desperately needed in the Middle Keys.

3.) If you don’t advertise, you don’t have tourists.

That should take priority, followed by Cultural events. We are more than the “Duval Crawl” and the arts need to be further and equally promoted.

As a member of the DAC 2 Advisory Board, I have found very few proposals for brick and mortar projects in the Lower Keys, and believe this is an area we need to tap into as we rebuild our District. Going forward, I would like to see more transparency from the TDC and additional public input on our brick and mortar projects.

MICHELLE COLDIRON (R)

Elected to Marathon City Council for a threeyear term in 2015, Coldiron has been mayor for the last year. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Kentucky University and graduated from Florida League of Cities’ Institute for Elected Municipal Officials. She’s vice president of Global Health Connection, Inc. and is a former child advocate coordinator for the Guardian ad Litem Program. Coldiron is married to Greg Coldiron and has one daughter, Mallory Morton. Coldiron has been a full-time resident for 18 years.

• Top three issues: Workforce housing, longterm recovery from Hurricane Irma, and the environment.

These additional units can definitely help alleviate some of the workforce housing crisis however, the Comprehensive Plan must address evacuation during the first 24 hours of a hurricane. The Municipalities can accept 300 units each with the additional 400 being available to the county. In order to accept the affordable housing units, the language in the Land Development Regulations and the Comprehensive Plan will need to be modified. The Department of Economic Opportunity will have to approve the LDR and Comprehensive Plan changes before the units can be allocated. If the changes are approved, the units should be accepted.

2.) Nobody, myself included, likes additional taxes.

I prefer referendums. However, at stake is the vital critical care hospital. Had this gone to public vote, I’m confident it would have passed, but the referendum would have bound us to a 10 year property tax without the BOCC’s annual review. The way it was approved, the BOCC guaranteed that Baptist Hospital must request the tax each year and, in full transparency, show how the money is utilized and justify its continued need or it stops. As an elected official, I understand that tough decisions have to be made to protect our residents.

3.) Tourism is the top economic driver for the Florida Keys. All three components are equally important to the success of our economy and, subsequently, the quality of life for our residents.

It is important that we keep advertising to retain market share and attract new visitors. TDC funds support the maintenance and improvement of our beaches and parks, as well as improvements to nonprofit attractions. These amenities are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Funding the events helps provide entertaining activities and quality times for all of us.

CHARLES WEITZEL (R)

Charles Weitzel bought his first property in the Keys in 1980, the same year he graduated from Rutgers University. He’s been a certified public accountant in Florida since 1995 when he moved to the Keys full time. He’s also a charter boat captain and SCUBA instructor. Weitzel is single and has no children.

• Top three issues: workforce housing, illegal transient rentals, and employee retention.

Site: none 1.) The answer to this complex issue is YES, (with conditions). Carrying Capacity, Sustainability, Continued Growth, and Hurricane Evacuation must be balanced. High-density workforce housing should only be allowed in certain areas in Key West and Marathon. The rural residential neighborhoods should be protected. The destruction of the mobile home parks and the transfer of those rights to other locations must stop immediately.

2.) Taxation without representation is WRONG!!!

The attitude that “WE KNOW BETTER THAN THE VOTERS” is contrary to my core beliefs. The rush to approve the taxing district without ever explaining why there was a need for such a rush frustrates me. If they were so sure it would pass, why not take it to a referendum? The same BOCC voted to increase the fees for permits at the previous meeting and said something like “IT WAS OK SINCE NO ONE COMPLAINED.” I do not shy away from making life’s tough decisions, but when you are spending another person’s money, they should be heard.

3.) All three of these endeavors are necessary and inter-related and need to be balanced for the greatest good to the community. The TDC currently has five District Advisory Committees. These DACs are made up on individuals that represent specific areas and are knowledgeable about the needs of those areas. The recommendations of these DACs should be discussed at the monthly BOCC meetings. The BOCC regularly passes “IN BULK” approval for millions of dollars in expenditures without even a discussion of any of the items being funded. I would recommend that all future approvals include a discussion to the items being approved.

THOMAS “TOMMY” RYAN (D)

U.S. Army veteran Tommy Ryan attended the police academy at West Point, after which he started his 21-year-long career as a New York City firefighter. He and husband Jon Baird live on Big Pine Key. Ryan has three adult children from a previous marriage and also adopted a set of twin girls while they were in high school.

• Top three issues: hurricane preparedness, both pre- and post-storm, the environment (protecting the water that surrounds us and the water we drink), and seniors and children.

Accepting these ROGO’s is another example of the State chipping away at Home Rule. Monroe County has for years worked on its land development regulations so that the Keys aren’t over crowded. What’s to stop another Governor from issuing 8,000 ROGO’s that will insure every square inch of the Keys are over built?

The big question is also how do you enforce the 48 hour storm exit clause?

2.) I do not agree with the vote on the Baptist Hospital Tax District. I fully believe that it should have gone out for a vote. Baptist bought Fisherman’s Hospital just before the hurricane last year, they bought it with the full knowledge that it was a failing hospital. Baptist at first was asking for money to rebuild the hospital but then it became a question of helping to pay for uninsured patients.

Again this is a known problem associated with any hospital in the country (speaks to our national problem of Healthcare).

3) The TDC is an important part of our economy and has been instrumental in keeping tourist coming here to the Keys. I do however at this time feel that the TDC should be more focused on Bricks and Mortar projects, especially in light of a Cat 4 Hurricane coming through the Keys. The recent allocations from the TDC all but ignored the county’s second district (the hardest hit by Irma).

Next for me would be cultural events. These events are great for both the locals and for tourists. The TDC seems to manage this part the best.

eople probably need to make a bigger deal out of National Sisters Day, celebrated on the first Sunday in August. This year that falls on Sunday, Aug. 5.

The Marathon Weekly interviewed sisters Sue Lovely and Cynthia McPherson. The two grew up on a potato farm in Mapleton, Maine, a little cold burg of about 2,000. Living out in the boonies, the two sisters, plus a third who lives in Rhode Island, made their own fun.

There was the “stinking stocking show” escapades (think a brand new cassette tape recorder, gong show, and authentic smelly socks), and lots of other homemade revelry.

What is the best thing your sister ever did for you?

Cynthia: Help my daughter muck out my house after Hurricane Irma while I was working in Key Largo.

Sue: Since my daughter was 4 years old, Cindy and her family hosted her in the summer months at the homestead in Maine where she got to experience our upbringing.

What was your sister’s most prized childhood possession?

Cynthia: Red Wing work boots.

Sue: A big floppy green hat with “Hippy Sippy Says” buttons stuck all over it.

Today, my sister will knock me out of the way to get (fill in the blank) Cynthia: an espresso martini.

BMCM Timaree Sparks takes charge of Coast Guard Station Marathon

I

n mid-July, Coast Guard Station Marathon received a new chief. Master Chief Timaree Sparks (pronounced Tim-ahree), took the helm of the Middle Keys facility. She is a 25-year veteran of the Coast Guard and has two daughters — Sadie, 9, and Teagan, 8. This is her fourth command; the most recent was in Ocean City, Md. She’s also served aboard Coast Guard boats, earning the designation of executive petty officer.

A native of the land-locked Barre, Mass., Sparks said joining the Coast Guard was something like a complete accident. She and a sister were in Boston to see a Red Sox game and didn’t want to “return home empty-handed.”

They stopped by the Army’s recruiting office but were waylaid by the Coast Guard representative.

She enlisted, and kept the fact a secret from her family almost until she shipped out for basic training.

Apparently, it was a good fit. Her personal awards include five Coast Guard Commendation Medals, one Army Commendation Medal, three Achievement Medals, one Commandant Letter of Commendation Ribbon, eight Good Conduct Medals, and numerous service and unit awards.

Does the Coast Guard recruiting office give out free T-shirts? Yes they do! However, I didn’t get one when I enlisted into the Coast Guard back in 1993. I did, however, get a full seabag full of uniforms when I reported to basic training in Cape May, N.J. on Sept.14, 1993.

What does the “BMCM” before your name stand for? Master Chief Boatswains Mate. This is the highest enlisted rank one can get promoted to with the exception of the one billet available as the sole E-10.

Besides a couple of stations, you’ve also been executive petty officer of some Coast Guard boats as well.

Which ones? How big? The largest cutter I served on was 180-foot buoy tender. The ones that I was the captain’s right-hand person were only 87 feet long. I served on the CGC Pea Island, a 110-foot patrol boat based out of St. Petersburg, Florida; the CGC Mako, out of Cape May, N.J.; the CGC Hammerhead, out of Woods Hole, Mass.; and the CGC Beluga, out of Virginia Beach, Va.

You’re more of an operations manager than an executive officer, is that correct? My entire career has been assigned to operational units that perform all operational missions the Coast Guard is responsible for. For the last 11 years I have had the privilege to be the Officer in Charge of the unit.

The mission of the Coast Guard as a whole is vast, but changes from locale to locale. What is the mission of the Coast Guard Station in Marathon? Station Marathon is a designated “Pursuit Station.” The pursuit mission requires expert boat handling tactics and techniques which require a high level of skill to execute safely.

These include maneuvering at high speeds while maintaining complete control of the vessel you are piloting.

Is this a “plum” assignment? Yes, Marathon is considered paradise! I am very fortunate to have been assigned here and often wonder what I did to deserve such a fantastic duty station assignment.

What do you think the challenges will be? Personally the challenge that I find most difficult is adapting to the Keys’ laidback lifestyle. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I don’t know how to relax!

What do you think will be the most rewarding? This is my last assignment in the Coast Guard. I am planning to make the most of my time here in Marathon by taking the time to mold my replacement. I am the only sitting female Master Chief in charge of a Coast Guard unit.

What is the scariest situation you’ve ever been in while on the water? I was onboard the CGC Mako out of Cape May, N.J. and we were tasked to head offshore to the Canyons to assist a disabled fishing vessel. It was the month of February in the Mid-Atlantic, so the weather obviously was forecasted to get pretty nautical while we were heading out. After arriving on scene, we determined that we would not be able to safely take the vessel in tow due to the onscene weather conditions. I may be underestimating but the sea state was over 18 feet. The waves were clearly over the height of the pilot house and the temperature was falling rapidly. We did all we could to maintain station near the fishing vessel but over time we started to develop severe ice buildup on the cabin. Our rolls started to get slower and the darkness of the night seemed to last forever … I felt as if we were not going to make it back

to the dock; we all feared that we may capsize. But, we made it back to the dock — limping — with some bent stanchions, snapped radio antennas and a dent on the cabin top due to the impacts of the waves we were taking over the bow.

What is your proudest achievement? My kids — their smiles and the way they look up to me make me very proud.

Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? Blossom from the “Power Puff Girls.”

What would your superpower be? The ability to stop time. I would love to stop the clock and just catch up!

Best piece of advice you ever received? Maintain your standard and allow everyone to rise to the level you maintain.

What is your nerdiest passion?

I am not a nerd.

Community Foundation provides ongoing recovery efforts

T

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) has now provided a total of nearly $1.4 million for relief and recovery efforts since Hurricane Irma struck the Keys last September. The latest round of grants totals nearly $235,000 and supports 34 nonprofits throughout the Keys. The grants are thanks to generous donations to the Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund and the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund for the Upper Keys at CFFK. The 34 new grants will help nonprofit organizations with repairs, cleanup, supplies and materials, and assist residents still in need. The $234,542 in funding complements several rounds of grants previously awarded to nonprofit partners that have helped tens of thousands of residents from Key West to Key Largo. In the Middle Keys, recipients included:

• Grace Jones Community Center, $5,000 to provide community assistance. • Growing Hope Foundation, $5,000 for restoration and repairs to Grimal Grove. • Guidance/Care Center, $16,000 for facility and equipment improvements, including costs for a new generator. • Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys, $16,000 for home repairs and construction costs. • KAIR (Keys Area Interdenominational Resources), $12,000 for repairs and supplies to Keys boats utilized for affordable housing. • Marathon Community Theatre, $7,500 for repairs and restoration of the theater. • Marathon Wild Bird Center, $4,950 for facility repairs, equipment and supplies, including pet carriers used to transport birds. • Big Pine Academy, $11,200 for classroom repairs. • Florida Keys Land & Sea Trust at Crane Point Hammock, $10,000 for roof repairs to the Crane Point Museum. — Contributed

Leadership Monroe County hosts social at Cheeca Lodge

onroe County can be a challenging place to run a non-profit, effect change, manage a business or further a cause.

However, there is a program designed to educate and build relationships that will ultimately help produce better leaders.

Leadership Monroe County graduated its first class 26 years ago and is recruiting for the class set to begin in October. Prospective members and alumni recently met at the Cheeca Lodge, where board members summarized the program and answered questions from those expressing an interest to apply. Communications technology shrinks the globe

T

hose words from that Walt Disney classic ditty are more true than ever before. My recent trip to Norway and Denmark showed just how long those electronic leashes have become … and just how connected we all are.

Through my travels in foreign lands in recent years, I have noticed that everywhere I went, people had their devices. Smartphones with apps and cameras and Internet connections.

Cellular network towers sprouted up everywhere; people were connected.

And that always made me wonder why my phone didn’t work on “their” network. Well, that all changed about seven or eight years ago. I was standing on El Castillo in the Mayan ruins at Tulum in Mexico, amazed as always at this Mayan seaside city on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean. I was looking over the sea as perhaps a Mayan chief did centuries ago when … my iPhone rang.

Since then, my travel world has gotten smaller and my home wireless carrier now offers simple overseas connections. No matter where we went in Norway and Denmark, I had cell and (most always) data service.

Even when we were 50-plus miles offshore, the ship had wireless phone coverage. (The less I say about the onboard costs-extra WiFi, the better.)

Seriously, most of Norway, including remote northern regions inhabited by only a few people and a lot of reindeer, was connected. I had full wireless and LTE signal at Nordkapp. There is nothing that compares to uploading vacation photos I took with my phone directly to social media via a wireless network multiple thousands away from home. Unreal.

(It’s also absolutely amazing that the camera in my iPhone takes better photographs than a lot of “real” cameras I used in the past, save for a few good SLRs and DSLRs. And there is no film to be purchased, no developing and printing costs to incur, and software on my computer — and even in my iPhone — allows me to edit and alter the raw image to my satisfaction. This is one of the most awesome things about modern digital technology, and I don’t miss legacy photography devices and practices at all.)

And that brings me back to the good old USA. Four years ago, while

traveling in upstate New York, I found vast areas where my phone had zero signal. So where does all this technology leave the traveler? In a much better place, no pun or lame joke intended.

For better or worse, it’s so much easier to keep up with people and developments back home (and conversely, them with you). You can now have a conversation with friends back home while walking the streets in an old city that others have walked in for centuries. You can even post photos of your tasty European lunch on social media just in time for your friends’ breakfasts back home.

It’s a great time to be alive and a great time to travel. Thanks to modern wireless, the world is truly a smaller place! Sadly, so is the space surrounding most airline coach seats …

This week, A Day’s Drive takes place in beautiful Key Largo. Although Key Largo is best known for its superb diving and amazing sunsets, this little slice of paradise has a lot more to offer.

Like any vacation or “staycation,” the key to “The Keys” is exploring new things and sharing in local favorites.

BREAKFAST Starting off your day with a well-balanced breakfast is important, and Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen, located at MM 99, is it.

From 7 to 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday, Mrs. Mac’s offers an assortment of gourmet fluffy omelets, house specialties like Mrs. Mac’s Famous Mornwich, Texas style French toast or my favorite, Eggs Benedict, in addition to a wide variety of options to satisfy any appetite. Mrs. Mac’s also offers an amazing lunch (served MondaySaturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and dinner (Monday-Saturday, 5 to 9:30 p.m.) menu. Don’t forget to save room for a piece of their world-famous Key Lime pie as once featured in an issue of “Cosmopolitan” (whole pie also available to go). There’s also a second location, Mrs. Mac’s II, located less than a mile south.

SHOPPING After you fill up on a hearty breakfast, it’s time to “shop ’til you drop,” as they say.

Key Largo is home to many fun places to shop, but on this day, it was Largo Cargo located at MM 103 oceanside that captured my interest. I stopped by to find a few fun gifts for my niece and nephew and found myself pleasantly surprised by the great items they have available: unique T-shirts, colorful beachwear, adorned picture frames, elegant jewelry, Florida Keys souvenirs, the list goes on. The moment I walked though the door, I was greeted by a very friendly and helpful person who guided me in the right direction, making it an enjoyable experience. In addition to clothing, beach items and home goods, Cargo Largo has a section filled with sweet treats like Key Lime pie, Key Lime chocolate bars and one of their best sellers, Key Lime cookies. My sweet tooth will get me every time.
