It’s been almost 11 months since Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc on the Florida Keys community and a lot of the workers throughout the Keys were affected – either from the lack of work, lack of tourism, or lack of housing. Some businesses took extra steps to make sure they didn’t lose anyone. We asked …

How many employees did you lose after the storm?

Andrea Leal, executive director of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, said the agency has not lost any employees specifically to the storm. “However, since Irma, we have lost about 10 percent of our staff, approximately seven employees,” she said. “Of those, we have filled all but two.

The number of applications received per position is noticeably down. Additionally, the more technical the position, the more difficult it has been to replace or find suitable candidates.” She said there have been no new incentives created since Irma.

Timothy and Kathleen O’Connell run the very popular Overseas Pub and Grill in Marathon. “Approximately six people have moved out of town,” said Tim O’Connell. “And, yes, we have replaced them with higher pay, vacation pay, holiday pay, and health insurance benefits.”

Keys Federal Credit Union lost six employees as a result of Hurricane Irma. “And though we’ve been able to fill the open positions since their departure, it took a little while,” said Maggie Sayer, the bank’s new CEO. The bank gave employees flexibility after the storm to make repairs and meet with contractors and adjustors. Sayer said the bank already offers a competitive benefits package.

Grilled on the Pool Deck Karen Thurman, director of operations for the Hyatt and Holiday Inn in Marathon, said it took about eight months for the employee staffing to stabilize after Hurricane Irma. Many of the employees moved jobs between properties. In all, she thinks she lost roughly 20 employees at Faro Blanco, and 12 at Holiday Inn, not counting Tarpon Creek staff. “We really highlight our 401(k), and we have health, eye and dental insurance,” Thurman said. “And, we do a referral bonus. Any employee that refers another employee to any Spottswood company can earn it.,” she said.

new chapter has begun for Baptist Health South Florida, which welcomed its first patient July 23 at the modular facility on the Fishermen’s Community Hospital grounds at MM 48.7 oceanside.

Gone are the tents that made up the temporary field hospital, which went up 16 days after Hurricane Irma destroyed the hospital Baptist had just bought. Currently, workers were seen hauling debris out of the old building and in the coming months it’ll be torn down to make way for a new 40,000 square-foot hospital. An architect has been hired for the $40 million project, according to Fishermen’s CEO Rick Freeburg.

“We’re really excited to be open and out of the mash unit,” he said. “Next is the demolition, and we’re planning on that probably mid-August.”

In the meantime, the four-part modular hospital that will serve patients for the next two years is almost ready for in-patient services. The emergency room, lab, pharmacy and respiratory services are up and running. Imaging services include X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds and echocardiograms.

The 8,000-square-foot modular hospital cost about $5 million.

Once the final two rooms are finished in the coming weeks, they will include four outpatient rooms, four inpatient rooms and a cafeteria.

“Right now, we’re strictly doing outpatient services, imaging and lab work.

Hopefully within the next two weeks we’ll be able to keep some patients here if we need to,” Freeburg said.

Marketing specialist Victoria Verdeja explained the four-day delay in between the tent hospital being removed and the opening of the modular hospital. On July 18, the modular was inspected by the fire marshal, who found the sprinkler system was not yet ready.

“The sprinklers in the modular facility required a very specialized installation. An expert flew in to make sure it was done properly,” she said. “While this took a bit of time, the safety and security of our patients and staff is our priority. The fire marshal inspected the facility and gave us the clear to open on Monday at 7 a.m. We are honored to be able to continue to care for the Middle Keys community.”

Construction of the new facility is anticipated to start in 2019, with a goal of raising $15 million through philanthropy. About $5.5 million has been raised so far.

At the tent hospital, about 20 to 25 patients were treated daily. When Fishermen’s was fully operational, about 900 patients were treated per month.

“We’re hoping to get back to that level,” Freeburg said.

The new hospital will be slightly smaller than Baptist’s other Keys hospital, Mariners in Tavernier.

A new taxing district in the Middle Keys will help make up for some of the $33,000 Baptist staff said it is losing each day. The tax, at .5 mills or less, will be levied to help pay for indigent care only for homeowners between MM 47 to 60. It includes Key Colony Beach and Duck Key. The Monroe County Commission will review the tax every year.

A COMMITMENT WORKS BOTH WAYS

Baptist Health fulfilling its promise

W

e all know the benefits of having a hospital in our town. Our residents must have critical access to health care in the event of medical emergencies. A state-of-the-art hospital will attract new residents and businesses, which in turn keeps property values trending in the right direction and our economic engine churning.

Which is why I am in full support of the taxing district passed at last week’s Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting.

Baptist made a commitment to Marathon when it was under no obligation to do so. Before assuming ownership, it loaned Fishermen’s Community Hospital $3 million to fund the payroll and then spent another $10 million at the closing table to get Fishermen’s out of debt with vendors and the previous management team.

Baptist did this knowing the facility needed at least $25 million in rehabilitation for a total investment of $40 million … before Hurricane Irma.

Since the storm hit on September 10, Baptist is reporting losses of more than $1 million a month on the temporary field hospital and may continue to absorb losses for the next two years as it operates out of a $5 million modular facility that opened just this week. $55 million is a lot of money to invest in a community like Marathon and is most likely the largest single investment ever made.

Marathon’s commitment was put to the test last week when the county commission approved a taxing district designed to fund $1.5 million of annual indigent care. The tax would take effect next year and would require a new levy and vote by the commission each year. So, if Baptist did not meet all the requirements spelled out in the ordinance, then the commission could reduce or eliminate the tax altogether.

Those opposed to the taxing district claimed they felt the voters should have the final decision in the matter. Others objected to the shift from support for construction to support for indigent care.

Marathon councilman Mark Senmartin, who voted in support of the taxing district back in April, wrote on Facebook that he felt misled.

I was apprehensive when I was recruited to join the Baptist Health of South Florida’s board of directors for the Fishermen’s Hospital Foundation. They wanted $15 million from the community for the construction of a new hospital. Why, I wondered, does this massive health care provider need my help in raising money? Why does this health care provider need our money, period?

In business, each entity should be self-sufficient or all the assets end up in a risky position. Flagship hospitals must put a cap on subsidies for the smaller, rural hospitals. The residents of Marathon have benefited from Baptist’s bottom line – we have a hospital. Baptist Health South Florida has shown its commitment to Marathon. I have seen the Baptist logo as a sponsor of local events like the 7 Mile Bridge Run and Fourth of July celebration. Even while losing money, they continue their mission to be strong community partners, and a successful partnership begins with an understanding that each entity is going to make sacrifices for the common good. By raising local money, the community has a vested interest in the success of the hospital.

The bottom line for me is providing health care to my two young sons and my mother who recently retired to the Keys. I am also committed to providing health care for those who are unable to provide it for themselves. That is why we have a government and live together as a community. That is what makes Marathon and the Middle Keys such a wonderful place to grow up, raise a family or retire.

Baptist Health is fulfilling its promise to the residents of Marathon and deserves a commitment from us.

hat goes around comes around, and the millions of tourist dollars spent on hotels and vacation rentals in the Florida Keys each year have circled back into event funding through the county’s Tourist Development Council.

In its second round of giving this year, the TDC has announced individual awards for events which draw visitors to the Keys and keep them coming back. The first round was for capital improvement projects through nonprofits, announced in late June. The money comes from the bed tax levied on hotel rooms and vacation rentals. The TDC’s District Advisory Committees awarded money for the following events in the Middle Keys. Some have already occurred.

hree men from Homestead allegedly got an early start looking for lobster. Unfortunately for them, the Fish and Wildlife Commission officers also started early.

n April 2, Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent called Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys asking if there was any assistance available to help put Lois’ home back together.

Hurricane Irma displaced Lois Shell from her home of 40 years. Her home was just an empty shell; she felt hopeless. Habitat staff explained to Commissioner Neugent that its newly named #HabitatHammersBack Critical Home Repair program was created specifically for individuals and families like Lois. This program started in January 2018 with the sole purpose of assisting primary homeowners in the Middle Keys with hurricane repairs.

On July 20, Habitat Middle Keys performed its “Welcome Back Home” blessing — a small, but memorable event in which the homeowner is presented a gift basket filled with multiple items specific to a lifetime of health, love and happiness for each home and homeowner. Habitat completed this project with amazing volunteers from start to finish using a total of 76 people who logged a whopping 731.5 volunteer hours.

Since January, Habitat has completed 22 home hurricane repairs and served 51 more families with the replacement of damaged appliances donated by Samsung and Carrier. In total, Habitat has had the pleasure of working with 677 volunteers who completed an amazing 3,677 hours. We will continue this wonderful program as long as it is needed. We currently have 18 homes we are still working on.

ohn Jay Philbrick established the Key West Electric Company circa 1889. It was the first of its kind in the Florida Keys. Competition arrived circa 1897 in the form of an electric plant developed by William Curry Son’s Company.

In later years, Philbrick’s KWEC would purchase the operation. As Key West grew, as well as the demand for service, so did the KWEC. In 1943, the KWEC was incorporated into the Key West utility City Electric.

It was not until the later 1930s that electricity would become available outside of Key West. Tavernier’s H.S. “Mac” McKenzie worked with Florida Power and Lighting to build a small electric plant. Located behind the Tavernier Hotel, it was powered by a single 50-horsepower diesel generator. Electric lines stretched for about a mile between Tavernier’s Coconut Row and today’s Driftwood Trailer Park.

Service hours were limited to 5 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. On Saturday nights, the electricity was left running until midnight. McKenzie’s plant served about 37 customers.

Following McKenzie, Alonzo Cothron built a private electric plant to serve a small community on Upper Matecumbe Key. Like

McKenzie, Cothron offered service for limited hours in the mornings and evenings. His operation served about 22 customers. The same story, more or less, repeated itself in Marathon where Captain Bill Thompson, for example, operated a private electric plant to power his properties and likely those of a few neighbors.

President Franklin Roosevelt’s Rural Electrification Administration helped unify these private operations by offering federally funded loans to bring electricity to rural communities. In order to qualify for the funds, a group of 300 members, or future customers, had to sign up.

A $5 membership fee was required.

Securing 300 members was no easy task. Marathon resident Allen Parrish purchased 20 memberships to reach the goal. On Jan. 22, 1940, the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Association Inc. was certified by the secretary of state. The office address read: Marathon Grocery, Marathon, Florida.

In the general time frame that Key West’s City Electric formed, an electric plant with three diesel generators began operating in Tavernier. Two portable generators served Marathon. City Electric has since become the Utility Board of the City of Key West, operating as Keys Energy Services and providing service from Key West to the Seven Mile Bridge. Learning more will be easy: the Key West Art & Historical Society’s exhibit “Keys Energy: Powering Paradise for 75 Years” opens July 27.

t’s been a busy week for everyone in the Keys, but especially for law enforcement and emergency services workers on the road, on the water and in the sky.

Eleven people were airlifted to Miami hospitals via Monroe County’s Trauma Star air ambulances Saturday alone within a 24-hour period.

One of them was an 11-year-old boy who was severely injured after falling off a boat near Boca Chica Key and colliding with the propeller.

Other accidents this week involved a head-on crash on the Seven Mile Bridge Monday, which resulted in three people being airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. “This is a life or death program and I’m very proud of it,� said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, adding this is a trying, difficult and congested time in the Keys, with a steady flow of traffic on land and sea for lobster mini season. “Most of the accidents and crashes we have are avoidable – it comes down to operator error and people making poor decisions which adversely affect other people’s lives,� he said. “We always wish people would have more patience.�

Trauma Star is on track to do 1,000 flights by the end of the 2018 fiscal year on Sept. 30, and is set to make about $1.4 million in profit from its missions. “It’s hard to believe how many flights we’re flying. We probably have the most flights of any county, even Miami-Dade, because of our geographical location,� he said.

For Monroe County residents, an airlift by Trauma Star is free. Fees paid by non-residents keep it that way, Ramsey said.

Last year, the county brought in about $817,000 in profits.

Danny passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 22, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his father, George H. Roberts; brother, James L. Roberts; nephew, Michael James Roberts; sister-in-law, Laura Jean Roberts; and Shawnee L. Cahill, mother of his son, Daniel Kelly Roberts.

onroe County Solid Waste is holding a household hazardous waste and electronic waste collection in Marathon on Saturday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Monroe County garage on Aviation Boulevard, behind the airport.

Electronic waste includes: computers, printers, televisions, cellular phones, VCR tapes and records.

Household hazardous waste are products often found in your garage, sheds and storage areas, or under your kitchen sink. They are corrosive, flammable, reactive or toxic. These chemicals can contaminate our drinking water as well as Monroe County’s sensitive ecosystem. It is incredibly important to dispose of these chemicals properly.

They include: paints, stains, strippers, wood preservatives, adhesives, putty and caulk, solvents, anti-freeze, waste oil, pesticides, fertilizers, weed killers, drain cleaners, pool cleaning products, fluorescent/CFL light bulbs and waste containing mercury.

Some electronics contain poisonous chemicals that can be toxic to both humans and the environment.

Recycling electronic waste properly prevents these chemicals from escaping into the environment. It also allows materials to be used and re-engineered.

Not accepted: flares, ammunition, sharp objects or medications.

t is almost impossible to gauge how many people have moved out of the Keys since Hurricane Irma, but Monroe County Commissioners say, “We’re losing people everywhere.”

More than once in recent months, the commission mentioned the issue that goes hand-in-hand with the reported exodus: a severe lack of affordable housing.

It would seem commissioners would be eager to see more affordable housing built, but at their July 18 meeting, they were reluctant to approve 11 affordable housing allocations for a project in the City of Marathon by Josh Mothner of IMBY Inc. He plans on revamping the Anchor Inn into seven studio efficiencies and constructing four new three-bedroom, two-bath units.

Marathon has given away all of the units it had for affordable housing projects and therefore asked the county for more. The city will get them, but they won’t be “free.”

The arrangement approved involves providing the 11 affordable Rate of Growth Ordinance units requested

by IMBY in exchange for Marathon providing the county with acceptable compensation.

What that acceptable compensation will be has yet to be arranged, but it could involve the county loaning 11 ROGO units for the project. Then, when the city receives its allotment of 300 affordable units from the state (part of a plan by Gov. Rick Scott to give Monroe 1,300 units), the city would “reimburse” the county with the allocations.

“I think that the meeting was good because, for the most part, we all agreed there was a deal to be made, and a basic premise of borrowing units makes sense,” Mothner said.

“The specifics and the details need to be worked out, but the idea that we should borrow the units instead of the county giving them to (Marathon) makes sense.”

The reason for the commission’s reluctance is based on the uncertainty of what will happen in 2023, when the state will no longer issue building permits for the Keys. Monroe County is holding on to as many affordable building rights as possible. Come 2023, some property owners may have to settle for an affordable right in place of the market rate they may want. Case law suggests that as long as there is some type of “right” associated with the property — whether affordable or market — property owners will not prevail in a “taking” lawsuit. County Attorney Bob Shillinger has said he is protecting the interests of Keys taxpayers, who could be liable if the courts decide the county has deprived lot owners of a property’s development value. The state could also argue that the county alone is responsible if it allocates its rights to a municipality.

Giving even the 11 units to the city was against Shillinger’s advice.

“We’ve sat here a long time and some of these issues go on and on.

(The county has) already provided Marathon with 188 allocations. That’s 188 more cases from the unincorporated area we will likely have to defend in 2023,” he said.

“You say it’s just 11 units, but who knows what the cost of defending those units will be in the future?” said Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

ounty commissioners were visibly wary at the July 18 meeting about upcoming canal cleanup, but moved ahead with a $35 million deal to get it going.

After all, it’s been nearly a year since Hurricane Irma roared over the Keys and swept tons of debris into canals, most of which has settled to the bottom by now.

Commissioners were wary because of the failed canal cleanup efforts by state-hired DRC Environmental Services, which pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project.

Commissioners approved Adventure Environmental Inc. as the lead contractor to do the work with help from subcontractors including ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier, Arnolds Towing and Salvage of Stock Island and Tetra Tech Inc., a non-local commercial diving company.

Adventure was the No. 1 ranked vendor, and cleaned Keys canals after Hurricane Georges and Hurricane Mitch in 1998. It also did much of the damaged-vessel removal work in the Keys after Hurricane Irma.

“They have enough equipment to do all of the sites,” said Rhonda Haag, sustainability director for Monroe County. Those sites are 103 of the most affected canals in unincorporated Monroe, Marathon and Islamorada.

The county is using a grant of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program.

It’s divided into $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe, $7.5 million for Marathon and $6.5 million for Islamorada. Work will finally begin in August.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we want to make sure we use every last dollar of that grant,” Haag said. “They don’t just go ahead and say ‘Use the money.’ The projects have to be backed up by engineering packages.”

The canals are being inspected with sonar so the county can have more information about debris and sediment.

“They’re also taking above-water pictures. This data will be used to apply for packages from NRCS, so we can add more canals to be cleared and add some canals for dredging,” Haag said.

The NRCS grant will be “executed” July 28, she said. “The clock starts ticking when they sign the grant. We want to make sure we have all our ducks in a row and issue notice to proceed right

around Aug. 7, then the construction commencement will be Aug. 9.”

Chris Colarusso, owner of Adventure Environmental, spoke at the meeting.

“We have 15 barges currently in the Keys right now; we custom built these for this job and they can easily navigate up and down your canals,” he said.

Should Adventure pull out, or something go wrong, ATL Diversified, the second ranked contractor for the project, will step in. They also could be brought in to supplement Adventure Environmental if it falls behind and needs additional help to meet the 220day grant deadline.

CONNECTED From politics to nonprofits, Sue Harrison is involved

rom the farmland of Iowa to the Lower Keys, Sue Harrison retired from Northwest (Delta) Airlines and carries a degree from University of Northern Iowa in textiles - yes, that really is a degree - with a minor in business administration.

She jumped right into the nonprofit sector when she and her husband Doug moved to Little Torch in 1984. Doug was based in Key West in the Navy during the mid 1960s and always wanted to return. He dragged Sue kicking and screaming away from the Midwest, but she fell in love with the Keys.

Volunteering for Wesley House, VNA/Hospice and Big Pine Key Food Pantry, her heart has been with her fundraising efforts at MARC House (Monroe Association of Remarkable Citizens), where she’s been on the board for more than 15 years.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay appointed her to the Sheriff’s Asset Fines and Forfeitures Board when he was elected. “I know how much the nonprofits struggle for funds and I’m happy to help them help their clients,” she said.

Even though the house they built took a beating from Hurricane Irma, this week they were finally able to move back in. “Ten months to the day, all of the interior work was finished and we’ve been moving back into our house,” she said. “The outside is still being painted and the fence is up.”

So, we asked her…

Full name? Susan Gayle Dirks Harrison.

How did you get involved with the sheriff’s office? Our first foray in politics was when Doug and I ran an unsuccessful but close campaign for a neighbor running for sheriff. We found we really enjoyed local politics. While running Sheriff Ramsay’s campaign in 2012, we got to know lots of people at MCSO and those people have become some of our closest friends.

What’s next on your hurricane repairs?

Our yard is scarified, but no need to do any landscaping until the next hurricane season is over. We appreciate all the wonderful people in the Keys who have gotten us this far.

Two 15-month-old pups, how’s that going? We have a brother and sister bichon frise who are the center of our lives. They are our third generation of bichons. The first were much easier, probably because we were younger. We think there should be a law: no one over 60 should be allowed to adopt 8-week-old puppies.

Mom and dad are still in Iowa? Most of my immediate family still live in Iowa. My mom is 90 and dad is 88. I expect I’ll live to 100.

What does success look like? Having all you need and being surrounded by your loved ones.

Proudest achievement? Being named MARC’s Unsung Hero in 2013.

What was your first job? De-tasseling corn during the summer when I was 12.

Earned enough that first summer to buy the fuzzy white winter coat I couldn’t live without.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? Tom Selleck; I’ve been enamored with him since his “Magnum PI” days.

Best piece of advice you ever received?

Be kind.

What is your nerdiest passion? I love to play video games on my iPad. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? My iPhone; I love staying connected with friends and family.

What was your first thought this morning? I need to go running before it gets too hot. (She’s also quite a yogi.)

Favorite guilty pleasure? Sitting in the quiet reading the paper and drinking my coffee first thing in the morning when Doug walks the dogs.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do/buy? I would give MARC a huge donation and fix all of our friends’ hurricane-damaged homes.

What’s on your bucket list? A trip to Vietnam.

If you could change the world, what would you do? I’d stop this political madness tearing us apart.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to? I was in absolute awe when I visited the Forbidden City and then stood on The Great Wall of China.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A teacher.

Favorite Keysy thing to do? Offshore fishing for dolphin. But we still have to repair our dock, and there’s no hurry since we lost our boat in the storm.

SCOTT ISSUES STATE OF EMERGENCY OVER ALGAE Keys not in danger from Okeechobee blooms

ov. Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for seven counties on July 9 in conjunction with toxic algae blooms originating from Lake Okeechobee, Florida’s largest freshwater lake.

Blue-green blooms in the lake are mainly due to an explosion of the freshwater species Microcystis aeruginosa, which have also been identified in the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers, causing alarm among residents, as both rivers drain the lake for irrigation, farming and development. As the algae dies, it emits a foul-smelling odor, which has raised both awareness and ire among nearby residents.

While in some areas on the mainland toxicity levels were measured to be above recreational-contact limits, there is no imminent risk in the Keys. This is because the algae survives for a time in rivers and other freshwater areas by “surfing” the fresh water flow as it moves away from the lake; it dies after being exposed to the increased salinity of a marine environment. In response to the governor’s call to action, the Army Corps of Engineers said it would reduce water flows through the two rivers.

Residents of nearby Pine Island have begun to protest the release of water from Okeechobee, since this has provided a means for the algae to infiltrate other waterways. The Army Corps of Engineers says the release of water is necessary to reduce the risk of flooding in the surrounding areas. A system of water containment – including levees and a dike – was installed after deadly hurricane flooding in the 1920s and twin hurricanes in 1947 caused a public outcry for protection.

The Trump administration has approved funding for the construction of a new reservoir to hold water south of the lake, but it awaits Congressional approval.

According to Shannon Estenoz (COO and vice president for policy & programs) and Stephen E. Davis III (a wetland ecologist) at the Everglades Foundation, the phenomena behind the algal bloom is a “perfect storm” of sorts: two different algae species — one freshwater and the other saltwater — each appearing independently and simultaneously, and each caused by different conditions.

The situation in the bay is connected with a major seagrass die-off in 2015, due to a hypersalinity (overabundance of salt) condition, caused by a lack of freshwater. Hurricane Irma has created chaos in the watershed as well, in much the same way that Andrew did in 1992 following a similar seagrass die-off in the late 1980s. It took the better part of 20 years for that part of the ecosystem to recover.

Unfortunately,it appears that we’re looking at a similar situation again, say Estenoz and Davis.

According to the U.S. Geological Society, blue-green algae, a/k/a cyanobacteria, are naturally occurring microscopic organisms that, under the right conditions, can undergo explosive population growth resulting in a harmful algal bloom. And Lake Okeechobee currently has those conditions.

John Cassani, founding member and director of Calusa Waterkeeper, which oversees Lake Okeechobee, its rivers and environs, has been coming to the Keys since the ’70s, and, while concerned about his area

by Okeechobee, sees no cause for concern for Keys residents from the outflow. “Outside of a tropical cyclone or dike infrastructure collapse, the conditions would not be sufficient to support the algae bloom as far south as even the Upper Keys,” said Cassani.

“Even if an environmental situation doesn’t directly affect people, it’s still a good idea for them to be aware of it.”

THE SAGA OF ‘SLASH’

ildlife rehabilitation is a demanding field — both physically and emotionally. The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center receives approximately 1,000 hospital patients annually from car strikes, dog or cat attacks, gunshot wounds, poisoning, entanglement in monofilament line and hooks, and more. But the most heartbreaking is animal cruelty.

Four months ago, employees from World Wide Sportsman called us with reports of an injured brown pelican on the boat ramp.

Hospital technician Emma Johnson responded, and brought it back to the hospital.

There was a long, linear slice through the pelican’s pouch and lower mandible. The slash was so severe that the lower beak had actually been severed in two. A large, partially filleted triggerfish was still lodged in the bird’s throat.

Spirits undiminished by his own gruesome injury, Slash proceeded to try to eat the fish again after our hospital technician dislodged it from his throat. With the partially filleted fish and the nature of the wound, staff concluded that this injury was intentionally caused by someone wielding a fillet knife in an act of animal cruelty.

In the Keys, we feel fortunate to have a community of environmentally conscious charter boat captains and fishermen who cherish and respect our wildlife. It is the exception, not the rule, that we see people treat our wildlife like this, but it is an occurrence that never gets easier to witness.

Nancy Saxe, a veterinarian who volunteers her time to assist the Wild Bird Center, performed surgery during which she was able to staple the pouch together and wire the two separated halves of the lower mandible back together. Since Pelican pouches and beaks take a long time to heal, we knew Slash would have a long recovery with us.

Over the course of several months, he ate heartily and regained his strength. The pouch and jaw slowly healed, and he was officially cleared in July for release.

At 6 p.m. on July 24, staff and members of the community gathered at the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary (MM 93.6 bayside) for the monthly public bird release.

Slash emerged from his crate immediately, took a few minutes to stretch his wings and take in the scene, then took off over the bay, dipping his repaired beak in the water in a shallow dive after a fish as he flew.

We are so overjoyed when we can conclude a patient’s stay with such an optimistic outcome and encourage anyone witnessing acts of cruelty against wild or domestic animals to call the police. This is our home, and the way we allow others to treat wildlife is a reflection of who we ourselves are as people.

SUPER SPIDEY LIVE AND LET LIVE? DON’T PUSH ME

I

am a “live and let live” type of gardener, although I have many times in these pages described how my backyard is trying to kill me with snakes and heavy machinery and a sharp, unfurled palm frond to the old eyeball that made me leak orbital fluid and caused me to sit up all night reordering my life as a half-blind person.

Missed some of that? That’s fine. I’m back to tell you about the spiders.

Since Hurricane Irma, or so it seems to me, the spinybacked orbweaver spiders in my yard have been infected with super spidey powers.

First, the storm didn’t kill them; and second, after-effects of the storm on this spider’s fertility is nil. Nada. Those things are ALL OVER my yard. There are many, many spiders in my yard and I do not think I had that many before.

I am willing to concede that I might not have been paying much attention, because even the University of Florida Extension Service describes them as “one of the most conspicuous of spiders.” Okay, fine, they are shaped like crabs, so yes, we tend to notice them.

But here’s the thing — they are jerks. According to Orkin, the pest exterminators, these spiders put their webs, “in shrubs, trees, and the corners of windows and doors and on porches and patios.” This sentence suggests the spiders build in out of the way places. Yeah, no. My spiders are not satisfied until they’ve caught your face.

Have you ever brushed up against a spiderweb with your knee? Of course not. And yet, have you ever had, say, a mosquito bite on your ankle?

When the spiders persisted, continuing to build their webs in even more a**holic locales, I resorted to the stick method. For weeks, I looked like a deranged water diviner, walking through my yard with a stick held faceheight in front of me. I wave it up and down to catch the spider web before it catches my face. The neighbors think

it’s hilarious. Or would, if they could see past the opaque layers and layers of head-height spider webs and see me acting like an idiot.

It also seems to me, using the most unscientific measure available to me, commonly called opinion, that the special post-Irma spidey power has infused their webs with extra strength.

On the main tethers of the web, there seems to be an extra “bead” of superglue every inch or so. Again, University of Florida informs me this is nothing new: “Conspicuous tufts of silk occur on the web, primarily on the foundation lines … one hypothesis suggests that the tufts make the webs more conspicuous to birds (Eisner and Nowicki 1983), preventing the birds from flying into and destroying the webs.”

First, they are kind of conspicuous, but not super conspicuous. For example, they are less visible when the subject is carrying a load of clean laundry from the outdoor facility to the inside; when that person is calmly walking along and inhaling the “fresh linen” scent, minding their own business, on a path they’ve traversed three times today already. And then boom!

— spiderweb to the face. I tried rubbing my face against my shoulders to remove the spider web, while simultaneously trying to see if there’s an actual spider on my person. It’s hard to see both the front and sides and back of your torso — all at once — without some extra eyeballs. I was also making a weird screaming/moaning noise with a twisted face — sort of like catching Sylvester Stallone on a really bad day.

Second, and here comes the other super spidey part, these webs are really strong. That’s not to say I’m hitting them like a trampoline and then being catapulted backward. But you know how the usual spidey dance lasts about five seconds and then you forget all about the skin-crawling event completely? Well, that happens. But then a minute or five later, I find that my car keys are wrapped in spiderwebs, or I find a loose tendril or two just hanging off a forearm instead of dissolving like a regular spiderweb. It’s usually a twofor-one, now-AND-later skin crawling experience with these super spiders.

According to Orkin, “Crab Spiders” do have one thing going for them.

“The bite of this common species is not known to cause serious effects to humans.” And yet, after the laundry episode, I’m not so sure I’m willing to coexist — safe or no. I am welcoming, however, birds that are especially trained to dive bomb spinybacked orbweaver webs. It’s war now.

THE CASE FOR TRAVEL Expand your horizons and your mind

G

ustave Flaubert wrote, “Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”

Mark Twain wrote, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

John Steinbeck wrote, “People don’t take trips ... trips take people.” And Mark Twain (again) wrote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness.”

There are people content to live their lives in one place, comfortable in familiar surroundings and people. There’s something to be said for the concept of home; that’s the reason I left the road in 1984 to begin a life based in one place. Even back then in my 20s, however, I had seen many different places in the United States. I had seen many natural sights and wonders, and got to know people who lived their lives in these different locations. And while it was good to get off the road and have a life in one place, there has always been a nomadic part of me that needs to wander and experience new people, new places.

Through the travels my wife and I have taken, I have experienced so much that has enriched my life and broadened my horizons. I have seen all sorts of oceans and seas, from the aquamarine Caribbean to the northern Barents Sea above the Arctic Circle. I have seen the mountains, from the ancient Smokies and Appalachians to the awe-inspiring and relatively young Rocky Mountains. I have seen the mountains rise out of the sea in the fjords of Norway, and the desert cactus cliffs of the rocky shores of Curacao. I have seen the immense beauty of the Grand Canyon and the rolling hills and valleys of Tuscany. I learned to swim in the Gulf of Mexico, and I have been immersed in the waters of the Gulf, the Atlantic, the Caribbean, and various lakes, rivers, and mountain streams.

I have climbed mountains and snorkeled coral reefs and saw amazing vistas both above and below the water’s surface. I have explored the same desert landscapes that inspired the art of Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. I have seen alligators, crocodiles, bears, bighorn sheep, moose, elk, reindeer, and Key deer in their natural habitats. I have spent nights in the forest and days out at sea. I have felt the salty spray in my face on

a wintry Carolina beach. I have felt the light-headedness standing over 13,000 feet in altitude and thrown snowballs under sunny summer skies. I have watched astronauts depart our planet in Saturn IBs, Saturn Vs, and space shuttles from just a few miles from the launch sites. I have seen the creations of the great artists: Michelangelo, da Vinci, Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, Dali, O’Keeffe, Rembrandt, Wyeth, so many more. I have wandered through the Colosseum and Senate of Ancient Rome, as well as the inspiring architecture of our nation’s capital.

I have played in the great casinos of Las Vegas and prayed in the Sistine Chapel. I have climbed the steps to the top of the Duomo in Florence and the dome at St. Peter’s Basilica at Vatican City. I have climbed the ancient Mayan pyramid at Coba and seen the gardens at Tivoli.

Through all these travels, I have met the most amazing people.

There was the small café owner on the other side of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence who invited us in to share some homemade bread pudding and the “new wine” of the season. There was the Sami in Norway who let us take photos of his reindeer. There is our friend David who tends bar and makes a mean mojito at La Casa del Habano in Cancun. There are all the friendly folks in Mexico, Italy, Norway, Curacao, Denmark, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and all these United States that show no matter how different our homelands and ways of life, we are all still the same underneath it all.

And if there is an unforeseen benefit of travel, it’s that it makes a person appreciate home all the more.

There is always something so comforting about descending the Jewfish Creek Bridge and returning to the Keys. So do something for yourself — take a trip!
