n November of 2019 the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin construction on a permanent elevated pedestrian bridge at the entrance of Founders Park. “The proposed pedestrian bridge at Founders Park will provide a safe

crossing and relieve congestion during events,” said FDOT project manager Maria Perdomo.

On July 10, FDOT representatives brought exhibits and a video presentation to the Founders Park Community Center where they received a mix

of positive and negative positions on the bridge.

We asked several community members about a permanent, elevated pedestrian bridge over US 1 at the entrance to Founders Park.

Islamorada businessman Joe Roth opposed the project because traffic will slow down regardless due to the police presence at events, compounded by the bottleneck at MM 90 where the highway goes from four lanes to two lanes and exacerbated by the hourly raising of the Snakecreek drawbridge.

“If it was a perfect world and I was king I would put this up by Plantation Key School and Coral Shores because up there it makes more of a meaningful impact with the kids crossing the street everyday,” he continued. “If you want to talk about a backup that happens every day, Monday to Friday, during school.

It’s right there.”

“I am absolutely in favor of it,” said Islamorada resident and Village Council candidate Ken Davis. “It is a safety feature that will increase the traffic flow, reduce the traffic jams and allow us to have more use of the park in the future for more events and activities.

Right now we are restricted in use because we don’t want to have too much traffic. This US 1 / OVERSEAS HIGHWAYis going to relieve a lot of that right there.”

Islamorada Chamber of Commerce President and real estate agent Joe Young is opposed to the project.

“I am not anti-bridge,” he said. “I just don’t think we need a permanent structure for six days out of the year. It’s a monstrosity in the middle of the scenic highway. Do we want to look at a big bridge that is only used six days out of the year?”

“I am pro-bridge, but I would prefer a portable bridge that comes out and goes in,” said Islamorada Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Judy Hull. “My first choice is to tunnel under the highway. Its safer and more aesthetically pleasing. I would have to hear a lot more about it before I supported a permanent structure.”

Founders Park Director Maria Bagiotti supports the project and says, “I think it’s a positive element for the park for all the events that we have and also for daily use. It’s also for anybody from the public that lives across the street and wants to come across the highway and use the park. I also heard from the Treasure Village (Montessori) school that they are really happy with the design. I think overall it FPID 4 will be a positive for the community.”

Keys hotels still rebounding from Irma KATIE ATKINS

ith the exception of those in Key West, Monroe County hotels are still recovering from Hurricane Irma when it comes to occupancy, especially in the Middle and Upper Keys.

The most recent statistics from the Tourist Development Council show average occupancy rates have rebounded since the September storm, but a closer look at the numbers shows Key West’s occupancy rates bring the average up while other areas have suffered.

Bed tax revenue in each of the Keys’ five districts show declines yearover-year since October with District IV, Islamorada, taking the hardest hit.

Occupancy rates are on the upswing, however, as more hotel rooms come back online.

Judy Hull, executive director of the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce, said of the 1,300 rooms in the district, roughly 850 are back online and numbers are improving.

“There have been a couple weeks where 100 percent of rooms were sold out, but that’s 100 percent of what we had online,” she said.

The Postcard Inn is still lacking 145 available rooms and the Islander Resort has about 100 rooms to renovate.

The Chesapeake Beach Resort has 45 rooms still being renovated, while the Days Inn still has 36 rooms to go along with 32 at the Harbor Lights Motel.

“We’re looking forward to opening our doors in the middle of October,” said Postcard Inn general manager Eddie Sipple. “That includes the marina, pool bar, restaurants, tiki bar and all our guest rooms.”

It’s unclear whether the Ocean House will rebound, and the Lookout Lodge Resort recently sold, taking 10 rooms off the total.

The Postcard Inn is three months away from completing a $20 million rennovation that includes new docks and an expansive waterfront space ideal for weddings, a place to bring your boat for lunch or a sunset drink.

“A positive note is that June numbers to our visitor’s center were really good, just 200 visitors below last June, so that shows we’re rebounding,” Hull said. “I also kind of watch the traffic on U.S.1 and I don’t think it’s been as heavy as this time last year, but our visitor numbers are getting better.”

A steady increase in bed tax revenues supports that, even though for the month of April the total amount levied, $252,846, was 40 percent below the amount raised in April 2017.

It’s still a 34 percent improvement since October, when bed tax revenues were down by 74 percent.

With major hotels still not back online, rates are down at Islamorada dive shop Key Dives. Owner Mike Goldberg said, “We’re off anywhere between, depending on the month, 15 to 20 percent in gross receipts.” He also said with the reef being in an unhealthy state, it affects business.

That’s why Goldberg and his staff have taken the opportunity to put more effort into cleaning up the reef for the future.

“We are trying to take a different approach in how we are viewed by our customers,” he said. “And because of the way we approach the reef, it’s why we’re a preferred operator.” In the coming months there will be opportunities for locals to help clean the reef, along with Goldberg’s project to lessen the use of plastic bags. He recently raised enough money to buy 5,000 reusable grocery bags, for which there will be upcoming events.

At Robbie’s Marina of Islamorada, general manager Cailin Reckwerdt said revenue is down but only slightly.

“We’re past where we thought we would be, and we’re in the green zone,” she said.

BANK FUNDS ‘WET & WILD’ DAY

irst State Bank of the Florida Keys recently donated $250 to provide supplies for the Key Largo School Summer Recreation Program’s end of camp waterworks celebration.

“It was First State Bank’s pleasure to contribute to the camp’s Wet & Wild day,” said Lori Bailey, vice president

and commercial lender for the Upper Keys. “The program’s teachers did a great job transforming the school’s field into a water park fully equipped with a giant slip and slide, water balloons and splash area with water sprayed by the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department.

We didn’t see one kid without a smile on their face.”

The four-week summer program offered by Key Largo School hosted 200 children from throughout the Upper Keys. Funding for the free program is provided by the Ocean Reef Community Foundation and Keys Children’s Foundation.

COMING BACK AFTER IRMA Anne’s Beach could be redone by December KATIE ATKINS

A

total revamp of Hurricane Irma-destroyed facilities at Anne’s Beach could be done by the end of the year.

The spot at MM 73 oceanside was one of the best in the Upper Keys to launch a kayak, go kite-surfing, or simply wade in the crystal clear water – until Irma swept through and destroyed the boardwalk, parking lots and pavilions.

“That’s why it’s been closed since the storm,” said A.J. Englemeyer, Islamorada’s director of public works.

The Islamorada Village Council recently approved the department’s rankings of contractors for the project and the amount it will cost to revamp the park came in at just under $800,000.

“That would be for the construction of the boardwalk, which is just under a quarter of a mile from parking lot to parking lot, the pavilions and reconstruction of both parking lots,” Englemeyer said, adding that design plans are already done. “So that project’s moving forward and we’ll start seeing something here soon. It could be done before the end of the year.”

Another project recently given the go-ahead is reshaping the swales (drainage ditches) on Bayview Isle and Villa Bella drives in Venetian Shores and resurfacing both roads to prevent stormwater from flowing into the canals, Englemeyer said.

A stormwater collection system with filtration trenches will be installed in an effort to prevent runoff.

“That’s a problem we have, with water running into the canals untreated,” he said.

The project will go out for bid through the end of September and most likely start by the end of the year.

ndy Griffiths will serve as chairman of the United Way of Florida Board of Governors in 2018-2019. Griffiths, who was elected to the United Way of Florida Board of Governors in 2015, was selected to be Chair by Florida’s 32 local United Ways, which serve all of Florida’s 67 counties.

Griffiths served for seven years on the United Way of the Florida Keys Board, including two years as Chair, before moving to the Andy Griffiths UWFK Advisory Board in July. He said he is looking forward to the challenge of helping to set policy for the statewide United Way. “I am a big believer in the mission of United Way,” Griffiths said. “I hope my work on the United Way of the Florida Keys Board has made a difference for our Keys nonprofits and I look forward to promoting the important work nonprofits do on a statewide level.”

Griffiths is a member and past Chair of the Monroe County School Board and a past President of the Florida School Board Association. He is also on the Board of the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, a member of every chamber of commerce in the Keys, and a member of the Rotary Club of Key West.

Griffiths owns Andy Griffiths Charters and Griffiths Property Holdings LLC in Key West. He operates out of Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island. He started the charter business in 1983.

A

ccording to Merriam-Webster, kraal is defined as “an enclosure for animals especially in southern Africa.” In the Keys, the word is most closely associated with the pens used to corral turtles. In 1832, John James Audubon observed, “Each turtler has his crawl which is a square wooden building or pen, formed of logs, which are so far separated as to allow the tide to pass freely through, and stand erect in the mud. The turtles are placed in the enclosure, fed and kept there until sold.”

Before the days of refrigeration, turtle kraals were necessary because the best way to keep protein fresh was to keep it alive.

Kraals can still be seen at the Key West Bight Marina. Key West was once the international hub for the processing and canning of turtle and turtle products. Green turtles were the targeted species. They were named not for their outward color, but for the color of the layer of fat found beneath the shell that rendered the tastiest stock for the soup that grew to attain worldwide popularity.

In the 1800s, turtle kraals could be found from the Dry Tortugas to Indian Key. At Indian Key, the kraal was contained beneath a dock

that stretched from a house most famously remembered as the Perrine House. In the Dry Tortugas, the moat surrounding Fort Jefferson was occasionally used as a turtle kraal. The Middle Keys’ Crawl Key was so named for the turtle kraals once found there. It is located between Grassy Key and Long Point Key at approximately MM 56.5. An 1873 survey map by Charles Smith spells the island’s name Kraal Key. Armand Granday, a French chef, found the first real success operating a cannery in the Keys. In 1910, Norberg Thompson purchased the operation. “At the time the industry was first started, Mr. Granday secured his turtles from the water about Key West, but they became so scarce in these waters that the turtles used in the manufacture of the soup are now caught in the Caribbean Sea along the Gulf of Mexico, with some from the coast of Nicaragua (Norberg Thompson, 1914, The New and Greater Key West told in picture and story).”

Green turtles became one of 60 “possibly endangered species” in 1964. The first catch restrictions were implemented in 1971. Today, all sea turtles are protected by the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973.

BOCC MEETS WEDNESDAY CANALS, HOUSING ON AGENDA

A

ffordable housing and Keys-wide canal cleanup top the agenda ahead of Wednesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting in Marathon.

The county has received a grant award of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program, which must be officially accepted by the BOCC. The grant is to remove Hurricane Irma debris from 103 of the most impacted canals in unincorporated Monroe, Marathon and Islamorada.

It’s divided into $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe, $7.5 million for Marathon and $6.5 million for Islamorada. Monroe Coun-

ty will coordinate all work, which is expected to begin in August.

USDA-NRCS is providing $37.8 million in reimbursements, with a local match (non-federal funding) of $11.4 million. This $11.4 million is split among the county, Marathon and Islamorada based on construction projections, according to county spokeswoman Cammy Clark.

Commissioners will also discuss a $35 million contract with Miami-based Adventure Environmental Inc. to do the marine debris cleanup.

“We’ve used them before for canal restoration projects,” Clark said.

Eight of the canals are in the Upper Keys, 23 in the Middle Keys and 72 in the Lower Keys.

Marathon City Council members in June directed staff to ask Monroe County for 49 affordable housing units, permits which allow developers to build.

Seeing as how the city has given away all of the units it had for housing projects and more can be requested from the county, the council asked for an extra 20 on top of 29 it needs for two projects by St. Columba Episcopla Church and IMBY Inc. On Wednesday’s agenda is an item for approval of 18 units for the St. Columba project and discussion of 11 units for IMBY. The 20 extra units are not on the agenda.

The commission meets at the Marathon Government Center, MM 48 bayside, at 9 a.m.

I am involved in the CSHS Canettes dance team, the soccer team, the track & field team and the football team. I have also been involved in the Coral Shores Leadership program for three years and have served as the junior vice president and am now the senior vice president.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Coach James and Coach Bryant have taught me many life lessons about never giving up on goals & dreams and to strive to get stronger and better in everything you do.

What advice would you give underclassmen? The advice I would give to underclassmen would be to get involved in as many clubs, activities and sports as you can. High school goes by way too fast so you should do as much as possible before it’s over.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I hope to be remembered for my big personality, my kindness, my caring heart, my humor, my school spirit and my hair. I want to be remembered for being myself and always having a fun time.

What are your plans after high school? My plans after high school are unsettled but I intend on becoming a Maritime Enforcement Officer for the U.S. Coast Guard.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? I would place inside all the pictures I have ever taken of my friends and family so people can see all the fun times and great memories we’ve made.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10year reunion? Three things I would like to accomplish before my 10-year reunion are to have traveled around the world, have gotten married, and have become a mother to my 28 animals.

hen the charter boats come home at the end of the day, it’s tradition to ring the big brass bell.

“I think it’s partly for luck and partly to celebrate their safe return,” said Tom Johnson, director of operations for Whale Harbor Group.

After Irma, however, the bell fell silent. It was one of the casualties of the storm and nowhere to be found, as the staff of Wahoo’s Bar and Grill – part of the Whale Harbor Group – was putting the eatery back together. And so the charter fleet straggled in every afternoon unheralded, until two weeks ago when a new bell was installed. It came from Holland, courtesy of Rob and Monique Schuitema.

They were visiting the Keys in May and stopped in at Wahoo’s at MM 83 for a bite to eat and a cool drink. They overheard the talk at the bar.

“A man was talking at the bar about the bell, about the bell that was missing,” said Rob Schuitema.

“Maybe they overhead the conversation, or joined the conversation — I really don’t remember,” said Johnson.

But the situation stuck in Schuitema’s mind precisely for the reason that he had such a bell.

“I realized those two stories were one story — my bell and the restaurant’s missing bell,” he said.

Schuitema had been given a brass bell as a retirement gift after he retired from his job with the “Rijksrederij.” It’s a department within the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the Netherlands. His specific department managed about 100 ships and 400 crewmembers on the seas and in the canals.

Schuitema said he was struck by the similarities of Florida and the Netherlands — lots of water and hospitality; and the differences — the weather, the long bridges.

“As Dutch, we very much recognize the fight against the water and the losses that go with it,” said Schuitema.

“We hope that with this brass bell the connection between America and the Netherlands will be confirmed. We hope that with every safe return of a fishing boat the bell will be sounded.”

The offer, acceptance and shipping of the bell was accomplished in less than two weeks in June. Schuitema even paid for the shipping and jokingly asked for a Key lime pie in payment.

Johnson said he’s still trying to figure out the logistics of that.

In the meantime, Schuitema and his wife are making do.

“There’s an Italian ice shop near where I work. They have a Key lime ice flavor there,” he said.

SARGASSUM SEASON All summer long, visitors and locals in the Keys will find huge mats of Sargassum floating in what locals call “weed lines” just offshore. he San Marzano tomatoes are imported from Italy and serve as the base for the tomato sauces on Chef Eduardo Rodrigues’ menu at Ciao Hound.

From the flatbreads and pasta to the parmigianas to the grilled mahi mahi puttanesca, the restaurant offers “very simple Italian cuisine,” said Rodrigues. “Simple products bring out the flavor.”

Having honed his craft as an executive chef in some of the most exclusive South Florida clubs like Williams Island and the Grand Bay Club, Rodrigues took advantage of the Hurricane Irma renovations to upgrade Ciao Hound’s menu.

“He has so much talent in so many cuisines,” said Ocean Properties Food and Beverage Manager Ryan McCurdy. “He is just great to work with.”

“We concentrate on the proteins,” Rodrigues says.

“Like free range chickens. Our meatball recipe changed drastically – a mix of veal, pork and beef, fresh oregano and Romano cheese.”

His staff also prepares all the stocks used across the menu, including the smooth lobster sauce found on the lobster ravioli.

Ciao Hound, located at MM 84 in the Postcard Inn complex, took several feet of water on during last summer’s weather event that led the company to replace the roof, all the kitchen equipment, chairs, tables – just about everything below four feet.

The reopening of the restaurant about a month ago pairs classic Italian comfort foods and flavors of Tuscany with local ingredients, patio seating and an outdoor carpeted “retreat” for four-legged family members.

For the humans, Ciao Hound offers a full bar with Italian-inspired libations like the espresso martini or the Italian margarita featuring Sauza tequila with Galliano, Amaretto and triple sec.

The coolest part: when your server scratches their name on the butcher paper table covering as they drop off the olive oil and fresh bread.

THE MENU The brick oven funghi flatbread with cornini mushrooms roasted with thyme, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Topped with arugula tossed in balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil. “When you cook it all the love goes through the cheese and tomato sauce,” says Chef Rodrigues. ($12) The prosciutto-wrapped shrimp appetizer (top) is served on a bed of fennel ragout consisting of sun-dried tomatoes with celery and onions – topped with fresh sage. ($14) The house made zeppole (top left) has a firm fried donut texture. Dusted with powdered sugar and sprinkled with sliced almonds, they are served with a creamy ricotta lemon dip made with limoncello. ($8)

UNTANGLED

A young adult male manatee is released back into the water after being found tangled in fishing line. The manatee, not quite 8 feet long, was rescued at Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo. Both of its pectoral flippers were tightly entangled in multiple strands of monofilament fishing line, and additional line had hog-tied the animal. The staff at Gilbert’s spotted the animal on July 6 and contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Manatee Specialists (FWC), which in turn contacted Dolphin Research Center’s Manatee Rescue Team. Miami Seaquarium veterinarian Dr. Maya Rodriguez painstakingly removed many strands of fishing line from the manatee’s badly swollen flippers. The manatee’s wounds were disinfected, antibiotics were administered and the animal - now named Gilbert - was carried back to the water and released.

A GENTLEMAN AND A FIGHTER — KEYS BOXER GOES ALL IN

Armando Alvarez fights oxing and the Florida Keys will be forever linked. After all, Ernest Hemingway’s passion for the sweet science has been documented around Key West with handed-down stories of sanction brawls in his ring.

And more than a handful of Monroe County fighters have forged their way through the professional ranks during the past century. But Armando Alvarez, a 28- year-old born in Marathon (who says he “represents all of the Florida Keys”), is on the verge of stardom – perhaps superstardom – in boxing’s most talented division.

Yet to face the giants of the welterweight division, the 18-0 Alvarez must first pass the most daunting challenge of his career on one of boxing’s most visible stages. On July 20, Alvarez will face undefeated Jaron Ennis on Showtime’s “Showbox” in Sloan, Iowa. Ennis, a 21-year-old from Philadelphia, is poised as Showtime’s up-and-coming darling. He carries the Philadelphia boxing pedigree, along with 10 consecutive knockouts. And perhaps that is all the edge Alvarez needs as he steps into the ring. Because for Alvarez, who also has knocked out six of his last seven opponents, Ennis simply serves as a stepping stone from the fringe of stardom to possibly fighting some of the most notable names in the sport.

Alvarez is a Conch. He went to elementary school here but graduated on the mainland. He’s worked in Marathon and his dad is a representative for Amerigas here in the Keys. So while Al-

varez now lives and trains from Homestead, his fighting trunks bear the crest of the Conch Republic and when he is interviewed, he consistently represents the Keys. Like many locals, we will be in his corner, cheering from our television sets here in the Florida Keys on July 20.

And having an opportunity to catch up with him before the big fight only made us bigger fans of the fighter nicknamed, “The Gentleman.”

Keys Weekly: How did you get started in boxing?

Armando Alvarez: I think I was 17 or 18 and a buddy invited me to the gym. I told him, “No, I’m a baseball player, not a boxer.” But I went and sparred with a professional and got my butt kicked.

I left with a bloody nose and a busted lip. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it, thinking about what I could do to be better.

KW: Who have been your biggest influences in the sport?

AA: My first coach — Gustavo De La Paz. To this day, he’s still in my corner.

And my coach now, Maury Ramos.

KW: Who are your favorite fighters?

AA: In terms of fighting style, I look up to Tommy Hearns. But I love all the guys from the ’80s — Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar de la Hoya.

KW: How did your nickname “the gentleman” come about?

AA: A lot of boxers don’t have any class — they aren’t able to speak or carry themselves outside of the ring. But I’m a true gentleman. Now, when the bell rings … there’s no more gentleman.

KW: At 18-0, you are fighting another undefeated fighter and you both are coming off long consecutive KO streaks.

Is this the biggest fight of your career and does a fight this big change the way you prepare for the fight?

AA: This is definitely a life-changing event. We are both the toughest competitor either has ever faced. He is a better boxer than me, but I’m going to run him over. I’m the bigger guy. I’m gonna get on top of him and run him over.

KW: Is the training different?

AA: My training is the same; it’s just a different strategy for this fight.

KW: You have earned a reputation as a guy with serious knockout power. Do you go into a fight like this looking for the KO? AA: The knockout will come. You gotta stay busy in the ring, the power is always there, no matter what round it is. Right now I am at the peak of the training, doing short and high-intensity workouts.

KW: You are arguably in the deepest weight class in boxing, with some of the biggest (and most talented) names in the sport. And you have a similar record to those in the top 10. If you win this one, and could pick one of the top guys, who would you like a shot at among Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr., Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia?

AA: I guess Thurman. He’s from Florida, too.

EAT boiled peanuts One way to know you’re “plugged in” is if you know which gas station has the best treats, whether that’s fried chicken or boiled peanuts. In Marathon, we highly recommend the Mobil gas station on U.S. 1 near the entrance to Key Colony Beach.

Every day there are two crockpots going — one filled with regular boiled peanuts, and the other spicy.

Customers ladle the goodness into a Styrofoam cup. Pro tip: These are best enjoyed at the beach and they only cost $3.99 for a 32-ounce cup.

DO Coco Plum Beach Continue east on U.S. 1 for half a mile and turn right on Coco Plum Drive. Head toward the ocean and continue on for another mile and a half. Coco Plum Beach is a hit with everyone, but especially those with dogs. Visitors can find pooches playing in the sand and shallow water.

It’s not really a swimming beach, and the only facilities are a lone picnic table and restrooms, but its fans appreciate the raw, undeveloped beauty of the area. It’s possible to walk for about a mile in either direction. Great at sunrise and sunset.

Monroe County Homeless Services Continuum-Of-Care, Inc.

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 WHAT IS POINT IN TIME?

Each year, The Monroe County COC (and all Continuums-of-Care throughout the United States) are required by HUD to perform a survey to create a snapshot of their homeless situation. On January 31, 2018, dozens of volunteers throughout Monroe County surveyed individuals directly: on beaches, in the mangroves, at grocery stores, libraries, churches, and anywhere the homeless are known to congregate. The Key West Police Department and volunteers surveyed those living on derelict boats. FEMA provided some limited information about the people staying in sponsored hotel rooms (age, family size). This report is a summary of findings.

On January 31, 2018 there were 153 homeless individuals in the Monroe County Detention Centers. HUD does not allow these 153 homeless inmates to be included in the total number of homeless that is reported. We may only take note.

In 2017 the cost of the homeless in jails to Monroe County taxpayers was $4.8 million. Over the last ten years, the jail system spent $50.7 million on the homeless. Providing basic overnight shelter at the Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter (KOTS) costs right around $8.00 per night, per person. Had the homeless stayed at the shelter, the cost would have been $390,000 in 2017 and $4.1 million over the last ten years, a savings of $46.6 million.

These shocking numbers are why funding for Emergency Shelters is critical, and why our Outreach work matters so that the homeless know they can go to a clean, safe space instead of jail.

THE EFFECTS OF IRMA

MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

By June 1, the number of homeless school kids increased to 602

Monroe County had 39,931 FEMA claims made following Hurricane Irma, of which 19,606 were homeowners and 20,119 were renters.

1,179 homes were destroyed throughout the Keys, and another 2,977 homes suffered major damage of the 55,000 housing units in the Keys. Total FEMA verified loss was $60,445,895.42.

Housing, primarily affordable workforce housing, is currently the biggest challenge. This issue cannot be addressed until housing stock is rebuilt. Due to the geography and vulnerability of the Keys, building codes require special permitting and regulation.

This process will take time.

Even prior to Hurricane Irma, Monroe County struggled with significant affordable housing challenges and many community members were already living “paycheck to paycheck” or worse.

Irma has only intensified the many economic challenges our families already faced.

It has been a very rewarding experience, however in 2015 Dr. Boros presented an opportunity to join him in developing an Advanced Urgent Care in the Upper Keys. After observing the success of AUC in Key West and knowing Dr. Boros' committment to the community and his patients I decided to join the Key Largo venture which recently opened June 15th of this year.
