As we prepare to blow out the 242 candles on America’s birthday cake the issue of immigration is on center stage. And for once, both sides are taking the stance that the system is not working and needs changes. We polled the locals to find out….

What would you do to repair the immigration system in America?

FSU grad and legislative assistant Brian “BD” Jogerst says the U.S. should close off immigration except for the entry points. “I am fully for legal immigration, but we need to have a system where people can enter in certain places legally and abide by our immigration standards.”

“Bottom line – kids should not be separated from their parents. That is wrong,” said Thunder Country’s Dougie Hitchcock. “If you are going to deport the parents, the kids should go with them.”

Key Largo’s Jim Knight said he would close the border. “I think we should just stop them and send them back until they get something figured out,” he said. “We can’t just have open borders and just let people come in. I am tired of taking care of people with my money.”

Independence Day Celebration Islamorada

The Key Largo festivities being at 10 a.m. with a parade honoring “Fallen First Responders” with the family of fallen MCSO Deputy Melissa “Missy” Power serving as the Grand Marshals.

The Fireworks Key Largo The skies over Blackwater Sound at MM 104 (gulfside) will be the backdrop for the Key Largo fireworks.

ot all historians are old. Brad Bertelli, curator of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center (FKHDC), was born after Hurricane Donna. Trained as a storyteller with degrees in BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing, Bertelli has penned two books about snorkeling in Florida, the books “Key Largo” and “Islamorada” co-written with Jerry Wilkinson, and two books on location sites featured in the Netflix series “Bloodline” co-written with David Sloan. There is also an unfinished piece of fiction that won a Novel in Progress award from the Key West Writers Guild in 2007 and a couple of books on local history in the pipeline. “He is a wonderful storyteller,” says FKHDC Executive Director Jill Baker. “He is a true researcher working hard to get our history told concisely.” With the support from the Florida Humanities Council and state Department of Community Affairs, the FKHDC has launched an interactive self-guided history app through the FHC’s Florida Stories, Walk Historic Islamorada.

WRITING

And that email to Jerry Wilkerson set you on a different path?

One of the best emails I ever sent.

He took me under his wing and really helped me discover the incredible breadth of history associated with not just the Florida Keys, but the Upper Keys in particular.

Were you interested in history in high school and college?

I could’ve cared less about history or anything else, really. The only thing that interested me was writing poetry and short stories. At 16, I told my mom that all I wanted to do was move to an island, bartend, and write. A believer in higher education, she was horrified.

Would you consider yourself a history expert?

Trying to understand the history of these islands is a daunting task — which is why I do not think of myself as an expert. I just keep learning more, but the more I learn the less it feels like I know.

How do you approach your research?

For me, if I don’t have a solid base of knowledge about the early history, it is difficult to appreciate and understand everything that came later. It’s like building a house, without a solid foundation, the walls and roof can’t be thoughtfully supported.

What do you love most about your job?

Just being able to share what I learn with the community and the visitors passing through who might not otherwise be exposed to some fantastic and often fascinating history. I particularly like getting to the bottom of some of the bogus histories that get passed around.

If you could have drinks with any person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you drink?

Robert Frost. Apparently he is in my lineage, so we are somehow related.

And he lived in Key West for a bit and came to the islands to write poetry.

Which is exactly what I wanted to do.

HISTORY How did you become interested in Florida history?

While working on my first book “Snorkeling Florida.” The dive captains I spoke with all had different stories about how a particular reef or wreck got its name. None were the same and, it turned out, many were wrong.

I started to do my own research and in the process became hooked on the local history.

You have picked up the baton from Upper Keys Jerry Wilkerson. How did you two meet?

Intrigued by the local history, I reached out to several historic societies in the area through emails. Jerry wrote back.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies? Writing. I am one of those fortunate people who is able to do what they love and call it a job.

What is your favorite historical movie?

“Star Wars” — I would love to learn some of those Jedi mind tricks.

If you had a DeLorean that could travel back in time, what date would you pick (and why)?

I would probably go back to the early 1830s, spend some time on Indian Key, and see what that community was really like.

An afternoon in Marathon Our day’s drive takes us to the center of the Florida Keys island chain — Marathon.

Often called “the heart of the Florida Keys,” its boundaries reach from the west end of the 7 Mile Bridge to about Layton. Often bypassed by those in a rush to get to Miami or Key West, there are plenty of hidden gems.

DO: GLASS BLOWING CLASS To our knowledge, there’s no other place to learn the fine and delicate art of glass blowing except for The Art Studio in Marathon. Except that it’s not all that delicate — it’s actually kind of manly — what with the high heat and welding glasses and Pyrex-like ingredients. Classes start at about $45 and go up to $100 or more. The “borosilicate lampworking” class teaches the art of alchemy, shaping and blowing.

Make a pendant or marble or ornament. Reservations are required for lampworking, but not the glass fusion studio on the first floor. The Art Studio is located at 12535 Overseas Hwy., open Monday to Saturday.

EAT: KEY LIME PIE Without getting into a never-ending argument about who has the best Key Lime pie in the Keys, we’ll just say that Burdines Waterfront Bar & Grill’s is dang fine. It’s very creamy, and fluffy with just the right blend of subtle sweet and tart. The eatery is located at the end of 15th Street, oceanside, and it’s a real, rustic gem.

(It’s earned 4.5 stars on more than 2,000 reviews.) The other favorites on the menu are the green chile cheeseburgers, the fries with special seasoning, and the light breezes overlooking Boot Key Harbor. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except for Christmas and Thanksgiving, and a couple of weeks in September.

BUY: SUMMER DECOR Summer’s here and that can only mean one thing — hordes of visiting family and friends are set to descend upon the fulltime residents of the Keys for a summer vacation, mini lobster season, or a back-to-school getaway. Now is the time to update the linens — definitely in the master suite, but maybe the guest room too. REIMBURSEMENT DOLLARS ‘ON THE WAY’ INTO KEYS Although it’s been slow moving and Keys municipalities have had to use their own funds to pay for Hurricane Irma recovery, reimbursement money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency is reportedly on the way 10 months post-storm. Here’s a breakdown of what municipalities have received so far. “Obligated” means FEMA has approved the project for reimbursement.

MONROE COUNTY: ROUGHLY $1 MILLION “Money is beginning to flow,” said Tina Boan, county budget and finance director.

She told County Commissioners last week she’s optimistic after two recent meetings with FEMA and state representatives.

“There is $370,000 in the queue” but it hasn’t been received yet.

That’s on top of $604,000 the county has already received, but leaves another roughly $33 million that the county already has submitted to FEMA for reimbursement but is still waiting to have go through the long and winding approval process.

“So of the $35 million in requests, we’ve received about a million?” asked Mayor David Rice, to which Boan said yes.

MARATHON: ZERO Of the $32 million in submitted projects, the city of Marathon has yet to receive any reimbursement money.

According to Finance Director Jennifer Johnson, FEMA has obligated $738,709.37.

ISLAMORADA: ZERO “Basically, we are currently waiting on FEMA review and funding obligation in the amount of $6,288,397.05 (the village’s reimbursement portion), not including direct administrative costs or costs for projects not yet submitted to FEMA,” said Maria Bassett, finance director for the village.

“With the projects not submitted to FEMA, our reimbursement estimate total could near $8 million.”

KEY WEST: ZERO Of the $7 million worth of reimbursement requests from the city of Key West, zero has been received, but City Manager Jim Scholl said city staff had a conference call with Florida Department of Emergency Management reimbursement contractors this week and $2 million has been “obligated,” meaning FEMA has approved it.

“Based on the call, we expect to get approximately $800,000 of the first $2 million by next week. So, currently Key West has no reimbursement dollars but it looks like we may have the first partial increment soon,” Scholl said.

eter Althuis is not just the owner of Snappers, he considers it, and his employees family. “It takes a lot of work to be an ocean front establishment,” he said. In order to be a true oceanfront diner, it must be environmentally friendly. Straws are only given out upon request, and they work to limit the amount of paper and plastic used, opting instead for reusable plates and linens when possible.

Snappers is one of the only oceanfront restaurants in the Upper Keys, and that means a lot to the proprietor of this piece of paradise. Local fresh catch is always on the menu, whether it is grouper, yellowtail or mutton snapper.

While they are fully operational, work is still in process, fixing the ravages Irma took on the Key Largo staple.

“Right now we have six craft beers on tap, plus local brews. And, we have the coldest beer in town,” Althuis said. And when talking about running the business he acquired three years ago, he said, “I fell in love with the place, the Keys are just beautiful.”

Snappers menu boasts favorites of the locals as well as the tourists. The tuna nachos are popular — two fried wontons topped with Wakame seaweed salad, and tuna, finished with a drizzle of wasabi aioli. The fish tacos are another staple on this restaurant’s menu. Made with fish or shrimp, one can have them sauteed, fried or blackened, and they are finished with a Cilantro Key Lime sauce. When asked to describe Snappers, Althuis said, “Quality dining in a casual atmosphere”.

Bartender Kiki is happy to help patrons pick the perfect food and beverages. A number of cocktails are available, including the “Neener-rita,” named after their bar manager Janene, who has worked there for 26 years. The cocktail is made with Milagro gold tequila, Cointreau, muddled orange and lime with sour mix, served in a salt rimmed glass.

Great food, great views, and nightly entertainment make this a place worth the trip. Come by land or sea, and find food and fun at Snappers, 139 Seaside Ave., or MM 94.5.

Mangrove Mike’s is bringing it all to Upper Islamorada JASON KOLER

ike Forester is repurposing the old BB&T Building at MM 90 across from Coral Shores High School and expects the patrons to be arriving on foot, car and golf cart by Thanksgiving.

“Its gonna be great,” Mike said, a few hours after inking the deal. “I am so excited to expand my business and provide affordable housing at the same time.”

Mangrove Mike’s (MM 82) has been an Islamorada staple since he first opened the doors more than two decades ago, so when it came time to expand he knew he had to find the right building.

He already found the right partner.

“I have known Mike forever,” said Paul Caceres. “When he brought me here I saw his vision. When he told me about the affordable units I said, ‘I am onboard 110 percent. This is a nobrainer.’”

Caceres owns and operates Keys Audio and Party Rentals and works many of the same weddings, events and parties as Forster.

“He is one of the hardest working guys I know,” said Forster.

Their plans for the second location — Mangrove Mikes Café & Spirits — include an immediate demolition of the second floor office spaces to make way for seven, one bedroom, affordable units that include a living room with kitchenette, bathroom and separate bedroom.

Downstairs they plan to convert the bank vault to dry storage, and transform the drive-thru into a tiki hut complete with large flat-screen tvs.

Eighty seats will be in the air conditioning and another 70 seats will be outside to round out the requirements to serve liquor.

“We will have the same breakfast menu as Mangrove Mikes,” Forster said. “Lunch will be about 20 percent different and at dinner we are just going to give people what they want.”

The establishment will also feature live music and plenty of cool merchandise. Forster said the original Mangrove Mikes will continue to operate normally during construction and into the foreseeable future.

“That place ain’t going anywhere,” he said.

he lease is all rolled up and construction has been lit up on the new Square Grouper coming soon to Islamorada.

“I feel like December is really far away,” said Lynn Bell. “But we love Islamorada and are super excited.”

One of the most popular restaurants in the Keys, the Square Grouper on Cudjoe Key features fresh local seafood, fondue, an extensive wine list and cocktails crafted with freshly squeezed local juices. Guests will have the option of indoor and outdoor dining at the Upper Keys location. Bell said it will be a trendy atmosphere she calls, “industrial chic.” Locals, she adds, are a high priority.

The restaurant will open in the Islamorda Marina located at MM 80.4, gulfside.

MOON Did you know there’s a specific name for the full moon during the month of June? It’s usually called the Strawberry Moon — a time when the wild strawberries ripen. It’s also called the Rose Moon, the Hot Moon and the Mead Moon. (We think the last pertains to beer, or at least we like to think so.)

Look for the big orb in the sky tonight, June 28. Or, if you missed it, then on July 27.

“The Moonlight Sonata,” by Ludwig von Beethoven, is probably the most widely recognized classical work associated with the full moon. The name comes not from the composer but from a critic who compared the piece to the effect of moonlight on Lake Lucerne.

Let the beatings continue At the Bethlehem (or Bedlam) Hospital in London, inmates were chained and flogged at certain phases of the moon “to prevent violence.” This barbarous practice was abolished in 1808 through the efforts of John Haslam, the hospital’s apothecary.

Sidereal Month vs. Synodic Month The Moon’s sidereal orbital period (the sidereal month) is about 27.3 days; this is the time interval that the Moon takes to orbit 360° around the Earth relative to the “fixed” stars. The period of the lunar phases (the synodic month), e.g. the full moon to full moon period, is longer at about 29.5 days.

A gibbous moon This is one of the phases. It means having the observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle.

Newlywed vacations The honeymoon is named after the full moon in June. As it fell between the planting and harvesting of crops this was traditionally the best month to get married.

Lucky The full moon is considered unlucky if it occurs on Sunday but lucky if it occurs on Monday. In fact, the name of Monday is derived from Old English “Mōnandæg” and Middle English “Monenday,” which means “moon day.”

Blue moon The second full moon occurring within a calendar month is called a Blue Moon. The latest was seen on March 31, 2018. Far from being a rare event this phenomenon occurs once every three years on average.

What do you see?

In China, the dark shadows forming the “man in the moon” are seen as a toad. Older European lore characterizes it as a man carrying a wide burden on his back.

The face, or rabbit, or woman’s head, neck and torso, are formed by the smooth and rough terrain that appear light and dark.

The phases There are eight phases of the moon, which succeed each other with a periodicity of 3.69 days: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent.

If you try to buy or sell moon rock (that is likely fake), you will be arrested by undercover agents. It’s estimated that astronauts have collected 842 pounds of moon rock that has been transported back to Earth. Wait. What? The moon is actually egg-shaped.

But from our planet’s vantage point, the moon appears to be a perfectly round sphere.

It’s the result of the ongoing gravitational tug-of-war between it and Earth, according to NASA. The Earth and moon’s egg “ends” are pointing at one another.

Nursery Rhyme I see the moon, the moon sees me the moon sees somebody I want to see God bless the moon and God bless me and God bless the somebody I want to see.

Neap tides These special tides happen when the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low. ... They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line.

Doggone crazy The chances of being bitten by a dog are twice as high during a full moon, according to a study at Bradford Royal Infirmary, which reviewed 1,621 cases of dog bite between 1997 and 1999. However, a study at the University of Sydney in Australia concluded there was no identifiable relationship between the state of the moon and dog bites.

A

cultural bond linked this island chain before conduits like Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad and the Overseas Highway connected the Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys in a literal sense. Many of the early Bahamian settlers venturing to the Keys in hopes of creating a new life started in Key West. The island chain’s earliest American settlement provided a sense of security for those coming to the frontier territory. With its naturally deep harbor, history of a military presence, and favorable position along the shipping lines connecting New Orleans and New York, Key West offered resources not readily available to outer islands.

One of these Bahamians, Richard Russell, sailed from Harbour Island with his wife Mary and are said to have arrived in Key West in the late 1830s. Circa 1838 they left for Key Vaca. The Key Vaca community around that time has been described as a collection of “50 odd buildings” with structures constructed from simple palmetto structures to more formal frame buildings.

While living on Key Vaca the Russells farmed pineapples and vegetables. In those days, according to accounts, measures were set in place to keep panthers, likely hunting the birds and rodents

attracted to the garden’s bounty, away. Notes also indicate efforts were made, at least occasionally, to keep bears out of the melon patches.

Richard and Mary Russell packed up their family and moved to Upper Matecumbe Key circa 1853. The Russells are considered some of the earliest, if not the earliest, white settlers to live on the island. When they made a homestead claim of 160 acres, it would be the first established on Upper Matecumbe.

According to the 1870 census, Upper Matecumbe’s population was 13 with 11 belonging to the Russell family. Their story would continue to shape the local history. Circa 1906, Flagler engineer William J. Krome purchased 15 acres of the Russell homestead for $735 and platted a 22 lot town site near what is today Deleon Avenue. He declared the town site Islamorada.

The name has nothing to do with the color purple. In Spanish, Islamorada translates to “island home.” The name is likely a nod to the 60-foot schooner built circa 1902 and christened the Island Home.

Prior to the arrival of Flagler’s train, the only contact with the outside world for these isolated communities was via ships like the Island Home.

Of $204,500 scholarship dollars awarded, $40,000 went to Key Largo Rotary for their scholarship awards, and $40,000 went to Take Stock in Children which is matched by the Monroe County Education Foundation. The remaining $124,500 was awarded for individual scholarship. The average award amount overall was $2,000.

“This is the most gratifying action our club takes annually,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Marlo DeMoss. “These kids, our community’s kids, are the reason we hold the annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market in February. All funds raised are for scholarships.”

The facility will operate: A non-hazardous underground injection controlwell system, consisting of one Class I injection well and one dual-zone monitor well, at the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). Injection well IW-1 is constructed with a 16-inch diameter fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) casing to 2,735 feet below land surface (bls) and a total depth of 3,604 feet bls. Injection is into the Oldsmar Formation for the disposal of secondary treated municipal effluent which has received high level disinfection from the WWTF. The maximum disposal rate is 4,520 gallons per minute (GPM) and the maximum disposal volume is 6.5 million gallons per day (MGD).

The dual-zone monitor well MW-1 is completed from 1,460 to 1,494 feet bls and from 1,650 to 1,702 feet bls.

The Department has permitting jurisdiction under Chapter 403 of the Florida Statutes (F.S.) and the rules adopted thereunder. The project is not exempt from permitting procedures.

The Department has determined that an operation permit is required for the proposed work.

The Department will issue the permit unless a petition for an administrative hearing is timely filed under Sections 120.569 and 120.57, F.S., before the deadline for filing a petition. On the filing
