Join the fun at Marathon Rotary’s July 4 beach party

K

ick off your Independence Day celebration in the heart of the Keys with the Rotary Club of Marathon’s parade and party all day at Sombrero Beach.

The parade takes off at 11 a.m. from Marathon High School, winding its way down Sombrero Beach Road and ending at the beach, where there will be hot dogs and hamburgers, cold drinks, live music and games.

Fireworks go off at dark, around 9 p.m., and they’re choreographed to music on radio station MYFM 97.7.

“Doing the show to music brings a lot of pizzazz. It’s pretty neat, one

of the better shows in the county because of the amount of fireworks we launch off,” said Mike Puto, who has been involved with the fireworks show for years. “A lot of people come by boat and anchor off the beach. It’s a very popular July Fourth event.”

He reminds attendees not to bring their own fireworks and to avoid bringing sparklers, as they can cause injuries and are also often disposed of in the water or on the beach.

“We just want everybody to be safe and have a good time,” he said.

Marathon’s Assistant Fire Marshal

T

o listen to any fireman tell the story, “It is every police officer’s dream to go to work at the fire department.” And, that’s kind of how Robert Petrick got to where he is today.

Born in Hawaii, raised in Charleston and finishing school in Key West in 1981, Petrick received a degree in police administration. His father was in the Navy and fell in love with the Florida Keys. After his dad’s retirement, the family bought a house in the Lower Keys, where they still reside. Petrick has two sons and has made Marathon his home.

After working in law enforcement for 34 years, he recently made the transition to Marathon Fire Rescue a little more than a year ago.

“It was a matter of good timing,” he said. “I was looking for a change of pace and saw a job announcement. The job was both exciting and something I knew I could do well.”

The short version of his job includes inspecting new and existing structures for compliance with fire and life safety codes. He also participates in activities relating to fire safety education, fire prevention and to raise public awareness for fire safety.

So, in honor of the Fourth of July, we wanted to learn a little more about this fireman. We asked …

ROBERT PETRICK Nickname? Don’t have one, at least one that I know of …

Marathon’s fireworks are great, are you involved with the display? The day before, either myself or the Fire Marshal will do a fire and life safety inspection at the Fourth of July event on the beach. On July Fourth, I will be celebrating the birth of our nation with friends and family, and of course, fireworks.

What does it mean to you to be an American? We live in the greatest country on Earth, what’s not to love?

What does a hero look like? Being a hero has little to do with what you look like.

More importantly it is about what you do for others. Do your duty in all things. You can’t do more, and you should not wish to do less. So, those people are heroes in my view.

What is your favorite part of being a dad? I have two young sons. My favorite part of being a dad is knowing that I’m raising them to be good men, husbands and fathers. Ice cream and campfires are cool, too!

You spent a lot of time on Key Colony Beach as Chief, what’s one of the craziest things that happened in the little city? A group of Miami teens followed a tourist couple from Miami airport to Key Colony. The teens robbed the couple once they arrived at their motel.

How did they get caught? Wait for it … I stopped them for speeding as they drove off the island. As my back up officer and I were conducting the stop, we learned about the robbery. Crazy, one second I’m writing a ticket and literally the next second we are arresting armed robbers.

When you’re at work, what are you really wishing you were doing? As long as I’m busy, which is often, I’m happy.

Favorite Keysy thing to do? Watching the sunset.

Best piece of advice you ever received?

A close family friend told me “don’t put off ’til tomorrow what you can enjoy doing today. Because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.”

What is your nerdiest passion? Sci-fi movies, I guess.

If you could take one item on a deserted island? Why would I voluntarily go to a deserted island?

What was your first thought this morning? Remember to put my coffee cup under the Keurig machine today!

Favorite place you’ve lived or traveled to? Disney World: it’s the happiest place on Earth. Charleston, South Carolina: there is no better place to grow up.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wasn’t sure until after high school. My guidance counselor suggested I become an accountant. But I wanted something with more excitement, and bam, police officer jumped to the top of my wish list.

There’s never been a time in the United States when it was easier to share opinions about political leanings and beliefs. This week, Facebook newsfeeds flooded with posts about immigration and problems with the system. However, both sides are taking the stance that the system is not working and needs changes.

We polled the locals to find out …

WHAT ONE PIECE OF U.S. IMMIGRATION POLICY WOULD YOU CHANGE? Monroe County School Board member, and candidate for re-election, John Dick said he’d like to see “quotas for the number of immigrants coming from all countries, fairly set up, not picking and choosing where we want people from. I don’t want criminals from any country, but people who are going to be good members of our society from every country around the world. That’s what made us what we are, all the different people.”

“I don’t think there is anything I myself can do to improve it, but we can vote the right people into Congress who can improve the legal immigration process,” said Marathon City Council candidate Luis Gonzalez.

“An improved visa system,” said Monroe County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol Deputy Willy Guerra. “People could come here and work for five years and if they kept a clean record and didn’t take from the government and worked normal jobs American citizens don’t take, that would be a good idea.” To be clear, this is Guerra’s personal opinion, and not that of MCSO.

“The length of time and expense of being approved for citizenship,” said Marathon property owner Josh Mothner.

“Now that the executive order has been signed, it’s not ripping families apart, but I just wish that they would allow people who are legitimately seeking asylum to have their claims processed,” said Marathon City Councilman John Bartus.

he Monroe County School Board has unveiled its three-pronged approach to increasing the mental health services it offers to Keys students. It calls for adding two social workers to the district payroll, expanding the Guidance Care Center’s involvement that will provide three more life counselors, and hiring a Medicaid specialist who would seek reimbursement on the district’s behalf for services rendered.

Superintendent Mark Porter said the state Department of Education has requested responses to a checklist.

“The simplicity of what we are doing in Monroe County will fully comply with the request,” he said of the three-page plan presented to the board on June 26.

The social workers would work directly for the district and augment the two already on staff and earn salaries of about $60,000 a year plus benefits. One would be based in the Upper Keys and one in the Middle Keys. The four social workers would rotate between schools.

Calling it an oversimplification of the social workers’ roles, School Superintendent Mark Porter said, “The difference between guidance counselors and social workers is that the guidance counselors do work inside the school, while social workers do work outside the school,” he said. “They engage with families and understand the deeprooted challenges our students face.”

In addition to the social workers, the district also employs four school psychologists, one full- and one part-time behavior specialist, and 20 school guidance counselors for a total of almost 30 mental health providers. However, the

MENTAL HEALTH PLAN UNVEILED School board talks about three-point plan school guidance counselors devote most of the work week to academic concerns, Porter said in May when the mental health plan was forming in response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Safety bill. He also said the school psychologists work primarily with the Exceptional Student Education department to assess students from a perspective of academic need.

The Guidance Care Center is contracting for an additional $68,000 annually on top of the $90,000 it already earns for serving the school district. It will be providing three more life skills coaches, in addition to the two that are already serving the district.

The third item on the agenda is to hire a Medicaid billing specialist.

Porter said that once upon a time the district had someone who performed these duties. No specific salary was mentioned for that position. By billing Medicaid, Porter said the district would recoup more than it would spend on the new salary. No other details were available.

When dealing with students with mental health issues, the children are divided into three groups — Tiers 1, 2 and 3 — with Tier 3 being the most in need. Porter said support would be available on a weekly or more frequent basis for students deemed in Tier 2 and daily for Tier 3. The plan calls for classroom teachers to incorporate mental and substance abuse preven-

tion curriculum for all students at least weekly. And the annual back-to-school day workshop for all county teachers will be devoted to the mental health plan.

Porter, along with partners from the Guidance Care Clinic and AHEC, also described low-cost programs that could also help, like Apple a Day for children in Kindergarten through fourth grade, Teen Intervene for middle-schoolers and an alcohol literacy challenge for older students. AHEC’s Michael Cunningham said he hoped to commit a recently acquired $100,000 grant to mental health services for Keys students. Cunningham said AHEC has three staffers, including himself, who can teach an eight-hour course.

“It’s an eight-hour certification to teach how to deal with youth and adult mental health,” he said. “It’s not about offering treatment or counseling advice ... the certified person will have the skills and tools to address that and get them a referral if needed.”

In addition to the Guidance Care Center and AHEC, the district intends to partner with everyone from local law enforcement to the federal Department of Justice.

During the 2017-2018 school year, 318 students in the Keys were screened for referral services. Eightynine of those were referred for service, and eighty-five received it.

At the meeting on June 26, the school board passed the new one-year trial program of the alcohol and drug testing policy 4-0. Monroe County School Board member Mindy Conn was absent.

t’s officially hurricane season in the Keys again, but Irma-weary residents will be glad to know the current forecast calls for much-reduced activity in the areas where tropical depressions form.

National Weather Service (NWS) Senior Forecaster Bill South in Key West says the three essential factors normally needed to produce and sustain hurricanes are not currently present: namely, water surface temperature at 80 degrees or higher, an extensive layer of low-pressure air, and reduced wind shear.

The water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean off the Antilles (a typical area of tropical storm formation) has been running about 3 to 4 degrees lower than this same time last year. This may not sound like much to the non-meteorologist, but these are the lowest-recorded temps since the early 1980s and are significant enough to lessen the probability of storms this season.

Interestingly, the water temperature differential earlier this spring was just about the same as last year’s temps, giving rise to initial dire predictions for 2018.

These lower water temps combined with stronger trade winds and higher barometric pressure make South cautiously optimistic for a less active hurricane season for the Keys this year.

“Another factor we can all root for has been the appearance of el Niño,” South said, “It tends to increase wind shear, which can literally tear apart conditions that

potentially spawn hurricanes.”

While all this seems positive, South warns Keys residents to remain on guard for the entire season.

“Hurricane Andrew was one of only five hurricanes to develop 1992,” he said, “And we’re still talking about it 25-plus years later.

Keys residents should not change the way they normally prepare.”

In addition to the plywood, hardware, non-perishable foods, fresh batteries and other staples we’re all familiar with, South suggests investing in an inexpensive weather-band radio, which picks up NWS signal (broadcasting at 165.55 Mhz) for five-day advanced tropical storm alerts. “The farther in advance you get the information of an impending storm, the more time it gives you to make the necessary plans to shore up your property and potentially beat the crowd if you need to evacuate,” he said.

For those whose memories of last year’s evacuation are still fresh, this is a well-heeded bit of cautionary advice indeed.

Colorado State University hurricane experts project a near-average hurricane season for 2018, with 13 named storms forming during this period. With Alberto already in the books, the final season total is expected to be 14.

Six of these are forecast to attain hurricane strength, and two are expected to be major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher intensity). Those numbers are down from the original CSU forecast issued in April, which predicted seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

Marathon Manor is coming down.

Once a nursing home, the building has been vacant for more than a decade since it was purchased by the Monroe County School Board for $7.4 million.

Now, it’s the site for improved athletic fields for Marathon High School, immediately adjacent. The $3.5 million plan calls for a full-size track with a football field in the center of the former Manor property. The student parking lot will be raised, a softball field created, and the baseball field will be improved in the existing athletic field footprint.

A

cultural bond linked this island chain before conduits like Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad and the Overseas Highway connected the Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys in a literal sense. Many of the early Bahamian settlers venturing to the Keys in hopes of creating a new life started in Key West. The island chain’s earliest American settlement provided a sense of security for those coming to the frontier territory. With its naturally deep harbor, history of a military presence, and favorable position along the shipping lines connecting New Orleans and New York, Key West offered resources not readily available to outer islands.

One of these Bahamians, Richard Russell, sailed from Harbour Island with his wife Mary and are said to have arrived in Key West in the late 1830s. Circa 1838 they left for Key Vaca. The Key Vaca community around that time has been described as a collection of “50 odd buildings” with structures constructed from simple palmetto structures to more formal frame buildings.

While living on Key Vaca the Russells farmed pineapples and vegetables. In those days, according to accounts, measures were set in place to keep panthers, likely hunting the birds and rodents

attracted to the garden’s bounty, away. Notes also indicate efforts were made, at least occasionally, to keep bears out of the melon patches.

Richard and Mary Russell packed up their family and moved to Upper Matecumbe Key circa 1853. The Russells are considered some of the earliest, if not the earliest, white settlers to live on the island. When they made a homestead claim of 160 acres, it would be the first established on Upper Matecumbe.

According to the 1870 census, Upper Matecumbe’s population was 13 with 11 belonging to the Russell family. Their story would continue to shape the local history. Circa 1906, Flagler engineer William J. Krome purchased 15 acres of the Russell homestead for $735 and platted a 22 lot town site near what is today Deleon Avenue. He declared the town site Islamorada.

The name has nothing to do with the color purple. In Spanish, Islamorada translates to “island home.” The name is likely a nod to the 60-foot schooner built circa 1902 and christened the Island Home.

Prior to the arrival of Flagler’s train, the only contact with the outside world for these isolated communities was via ships like the Island Home.

here was a round of applause at the June 20 Board of County Commissioners meeting in Key Largo for the work of county staff in their grant award of $49.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and its Emergency Watershed Protection Program.

The grant is to remove Hurricane Irma debris from 103 of the most impacted canals in unincorporated Monroe, Marathon and Islamorada.

The grant is divided into $35.2 million for unincorporated Monroe, $7.5 million for Marathon and $6.5 million for Islamorada. Monroe County will coordinate all work, which is expected to begin in August.

USDA-NRCS is providing $37.8 million in reimbursements, with a local match (non-federal funding) of $11.4 million. This $11.4 million is split between the county, Marathon and Islamorada based on construction projections, according to county spokeswoman Cammy Clark.

“We’re not even sure if there is $38 million worth of debris out there, but this gives us the ability to find it,” said County Administrator Roman Gastesi.

The grant will be presented to the BOCC’s July meeting for approval.

The county expects to use Florida Keys Stewardship Act funding to cover some of the local match. Eight of these canals are in the Upper Keys, 23 in the Middle Keys and 72 in the Lower Keys.

“Many thanks go to County Administrator Roman Gastesi for leading the effort,” said Monroe County Sustainability Director Rhonda Haag, who is coordinating the hurricane marine debris removal effort. “It was his idea to work with NRCS in applying for the grant, due to his knowledge of previous NCRS canal clearing work performed after Hurricane Georges.”

In February, Monroe County submitted five application packages for Irma marine debris removal to the regional office of the National Resources Conservation Services.

Many of the impacted canals are still full of debris.

sn’t the fabricated controversy over the “Skeeter Sign” a hoot? With a first read, it reminds one of the April Fool’s day spoofs that abound in our fair town, and most likely in every city and town in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. But unfortunately someone is very upset, and what is even harder to understand is an American corporate giant that may be falling to the whining and complaining (or threats) of yet another snowflake whose feelings were apparently hurt. It is really too bad that this individual, or individuals, cannot see the ocean for the waves, and does not understand that the people of Marathon are out to help each other … not to hurt each other, or anyone else. Several clichés come to mind: live and let live; you can’t please all of the people all of the time; easy does it. The thing about clichés is that they really are truisms about how to live life, and they always have been. Now, I have wracked my brain trying to determine what the big offense is pertaining to not being a skeeter breeder. I sure didn’t find it on Google! Perhaps one day the good people in the little City of Marathon and I will be enlightened about the essence of this colossal transgression. Perhaps one day, we will have more visitors thanking our citizens for laying down the welcome mats to guests from around the country and around the world. Perhaps one day, people will appreciate our hospitality and the families who have given tirelessly to improve the community for decades. Finally, the best advice has always been to do to others as you would have them do to you. Perhaps this sage advice will soon grace the sign … before the sign gets torn down, to the detriment of all.

HOSPITAL FUNDING APPROVAL ARTICLE IN THE MIDDLE KEYS

A

s a concerned homeowner in Marathon, I and a group of friends have many questions concerning the article printed in the June 21 Keys Weekly Newspaper. If you have not seen the article, you can read it here: www.keysweekly. com/42/no-referendum-necessary When this project started, we were told it was for the building and reconstruction of Fishermen’s Hospital here in Marathon. Now, we find out that our county Board of Commissioners has approved the extra taxes for operating losses accrued by the Baptist Hospital System here and “indigent charity care.”

Who is getting taxed? Homeowners? Businesses? Hotels? Non-homesteaded properties? Are there any exemptions being given to this tax? Is there anyone that does not have to pay? What amount of revenue will be raised each year by this tax? What happens after the “10-year” maximum with the tax? What slush fund will it go into then? Why can’t we have a say in how our money is being spent? Why is this being pushed through when so many residents are not here to vote?

We do not know of anyone that would disagree with the fact that we do need a hospital here in Marathon.

But, the way this is being handled does not seem right. We, as residents of Marathon and Monroe County, deserve the right to be able to vote on this issue.

It is always easy to approve something when it’s another person’s money.

As we read the article, county Mayor David Rice states that if it were put to a vote, it would be approved overwhelmingly. The issue of “more time off the front of this, the more time off the back end” is funny! We still have two months until Aug. 28 so we should be able to get this on this year’s referendum. At least let us vote and decide how our money is spent. Or do a bond referendum, having the taxes go for brick and mortar building of the new hospital. The hospital will be part of the community for many years after Baptist Health is gone. With the exception of a group of people living on Duck Key, there has been support putting in the “tax district” in Marathon and Key Colony Beach. Many people have stated they were never contacted by phone call and didn’t even receive a mailer survey.

Could it be the group of people on Duck Key smelled something fishy immediately? Mayor Rice stating “It would be approved overwhelmingly” seems to many it would not be approved and would have been turned down, so get it passed now, quietly!

Each year, the commissioners say they will revisit this issue. Meanwhile, property values are reassessed; home values go up and up goes the tax.

The amount raised will be unlimited.

Baptist Health has stated “this tax is not going to cover our losses…” but it is going to “help with our losses.” That statement sounds like it will be used to pay for losses accrued in Marathon.

The “indigent charity care” issue is added to pull at the heartstrings. Hospitals are required to provide indigent charity care in the state of Florida.

Please read the article that was published last week. This is not just a tax for homeowners! This includes renters, vacationers and short-term rentals. If the expenses get too high, people will no longer think of Marathon, Key Colony Beach and Duck Key as destinations. Everyone will be affected.

Please let the commissioners know we need and deserve a voice in this matter. Please text, email or call them.

Our hard-earned money needs to be used wisely… in the construction of the new hospital. We deserve to have our voices heard.

MONROE COUNTY: ROUGHLY $1 MILLION “Money is beginning to flow,� said Tina Boan, county budget and finance director.

She told County Commissioners last week she’s optimistic after two recent meetings with FEMA and state representatives. “There is $370,000 in the queue� but it hasn’t been received yet.

That’s on top of $604,000 the county has already received, but leaves another roughly $33 million that the county already has submitted to FEMA for reimbursement but is still waiting to have go through the long and winding approval process. “So of the $35 million in requests, we’ve received about a million?� asked Mayor David Rice, to which Boan said yes.

MARATHON: ZERO Of the $32 million in submitted projects, the city of Marathon has yet to receive any reimbursement money.

According to Finance Director Jennifer Johnson, FEMA has obligated $738,709.37.

ISLAMORADA: ZERO “Basically, we are currently waiting on FEMA review and funding obligation in the amount of $6,288,397.05 (the village’s reimbursement portion), not including direct administrative costs or costs for projects not yet submitted to FEMA,� said Maria Bassett, finance director for the village. “With the projects not submitted to FEMA, our reimbursement estimate total could near $8 million.�

KEY WEST: ZERO Of the $7 million worth of reimbursement requests from the city of Key West, zero has been received, but City Manager Jim Scholl said city staff had a conference call with Florida Department of Emergency Management reimbursement contractors this week and $2 million has been “obligated,� meaning FEMA has approved it. “Based on the call, we expect to get approximately $800,000 of the first $2 million by next week. So, currently Key West has no reimbursement dollars but it looks like we may have the first partial increment soon,� Scholl said.

KEY LIME FEST IS SATURDAY AT KEY WEST LIGHTHOUSE

T

he Key West Art & Historical Society will help catapult America’s favorite citrus celebration, the Key Lime Festival, into the limelight Saturday, June 30 starting at 11 a.m. The second annual Key Lime Pie Drop contest and party happens at the Key West Lighthouse, 938 Whitehead St. Key Lime Festival producers David Sloan and Marky Pierson have partnered with Key West Art & Historical Society to offer the free pie drop from the iconic 73-foot lighthouse.

Together they invite Key West’s most creative minds to attempt to outsmart gravity by finding a way to drop a Key Lime Pie from the top of the historic Lighthouse to the ground without damaging the dessert. There is no fee to enter and the Key West Key

Lime Pie Co. will provide a 5-inch diameter pie. The challenge for competitors is to (in advance) create a device or container to protect the pie, deliver it to the targeted area below and keep it from exploding on impact.

Enter the drop contest for a chance at fame, fortune, a trophy and a crisp $100 cash prize.

“Key West Art & Historical Society is a part of the fabric and history of Key West,” Pierson said. “We love partnering with them and their continued enthusiasm for all things Key West.”

The fun also includes food vendors, a full bar provided by Tiki House Key West, music by Soundwaves’ DJ Top Jimmy, SnoCones, a kids zone with face painting and a giant waterslide.

Sloan and Pierson will open the event with a ceremonial pie-drop at 11 with registered contestants gathering at noon to begin dropping their pies from the lofty lighthouse platform to the target below. Points will be awarded based on factors such as where and if you land on the target and the condition of the pie when it lands. Additional trophies will be awarded for “Most Creative Design,” “Best Decorated,” and “Best Key Lime Theme.” Costumes are encouraged for contestants and spectators alike.

“Everybody should check that off their Key West bucket list,” Sloan said.

MOON Did you know there’s a specific name for the full moon during the month of June? It’s usually called the Strawberry Moon — a time when the wild strawberries ripen. It’s also called the Rose Moon, the Hot Moon and the Mead Moon. (We think the last pertains to beer, or at least we like to think so.)

Look for the big orb in the sky tonight, June 28. Or, if you missed it, then on July 27.

“The Moonlight Sonata,” by Ludwig von Beethoven, is probably the most widely recognized classical work associated with the full moon. The name comes not from the composer but from a critic who compared the piece to the effect of moonlight on Lake Lucerne.

Let the beatings continue At the Bethlehem (or Bedlam) Hospital in London, inmates were chained and flogged at certain phases of the moon “to prevent violence.” This barbarous practice was abolished in 1808 through the efforts of John Haslam, the hospital’s apothecary.

Sidereal Month vs. Synodic Month The Moon’s sidereal orbital period (the sidereal month) is about 27.3 days; this is the time interval that the Moon takes to orbit 360° around the Earth relative to the “fixed” stars. The period of the lunar phases (the synodic month), e.g. the full moon to full moon period, is longer at about 29.5 days.

A gibbous moon This is one of the phases. It means having the observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle.

Newlywed vacations The honeymoon is named after the full moon in June. As it fell between the planting and harvesting of crops this was traditionally the best month to get married.

Lucky The full moon is considered unlucky if it occurs on Sunday but lucky if it occurs on Monday. In fact, the name of Monday is derived from Old English “Mōnandæg” and Middle English “Monenday,” which means “moon day.”

Blue moon The second full moon occurring within a calendar month is called a Blue Moon. The latest was seen on March 31, 2018. Far from being a rare event this phenomenon occurs once every three years on average.

What do you see?

In China, the dark shadows forming the “man in the moon” are seen as a toad. Older European lore characterizes it as a man carrying a wide burden on his back.

The face, or rabbit, or woman’s head, neck and torso, are formed by the smooth and rough terrain that appear light and dark.

The phases There are eight phases of the moon, which succeed each other with a periodicity of 3.69 days: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent.

he Hampton Inn in Marathon opened its doors June 21 for a “soft” start.

Operations for the 80-room motel are expected to be fully up and running by the Fourth of July weekend, although it’s possible to make a reservation now. Every room at “the old Ramada” has been renovated, there’s a new pool, and it even features elevators for access to the second floor. The breakfast is complimentary and the wifi is free.

The entire space is filled with clever details like the worktables in the lobby complete with electrical outlets to charge phones and laptops.

The locals’ policy is this: “Come on by.” The tiki hut is serving cold beverages and the pool temperature is just right.

received an unsigned email response to last week’s “Family Values” column about splitting up families at the border. The simple email, from norespect16@XXX. com, read, “You have your head so far up your rectum you may never see daylight. Maybe we will luck out and you will suffocate. Turn off CNN and MSNBC. It has pickled your brain… if you ever had one.”

I make absolutely no apologies for being offended by our government’s (hopefully temporary) position on forcibly removing children from their parents upon crossing the southern U.S. border. Something else that may not make “norespect” happy are actual facts (look ‘em up) on the immigration situation.

• Fact 1: Overall apprehensions of people entering the southern border illegally began to fall steadily after 2006, falling more steeply with the beginning of the Great Recession in December 2007. Apprehensions fell from nearly 1.8 million in 2005 to under 304,000 in 2017, the lowest number in 37 years.

(Source: U.S. Border Patrol) • Fact 2: Illegal immigration specifically from Mexico is the lowest in 50 years, and legal immigration of Mexicans to the United States is not increasing. (Source: Pew Research Center) • Fact 3: Federal and international law prevent the government from deporting people back to a situation where they are endangered. And it’s perfectly legal for people to present themselves for asylum.

Many of those seeking admission into the U.S. are fleeing gang warfare and drug violence in their native countries of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. U.S. State Department and other research has noted that Honduras and El Salvador have some of the world’s highest murder rates, as well as a failed judicial system and rampant criminal activities. These places are even more violent that Syria or Afghanistan … ponder that for a moment. These asylum seekers — refugees — are fleeing to protect their children and families. Any person who loves their children would do the same. Amidst allegations that border officials are illegally refusing to accept

asylum seekers at entry points, many choose to cross the border between entry points and then present themselves to officials. That’s when the families were split up.

The facility will operate: A non-hazardous underground injection controlwell system, consisting of one Class I injection well and one dual-zone monitor well, at the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). Injection well IW-1 is constructed with a 16-inch diameter fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) casing to 2,735 feet below land surface (bls) and a total depth of 3,604 feet bls. Injection is into the Oldsmar Formation for the disposal of secondary treated municipal effluent which has received high level disinfection from the WWTF. The maximum disposal rate is 4,520 gallons per minute (GPM) and the maximum disposal volume is 6.5 million gallons per day (MGD).

The dual-zone monitor well MW-1 is completed from 1,460 to 1,494 feet bls and from 1,650 to 1,702 feet bls.

The Department has permitting jurisdiction under Chapter 403 of the Florida Statutes (F.S.) and the rules adopted thereunder. The project is not exempt from permitting procedures.

The Department has determined that an operation permit is required for the proposed work.

The Department will issue the permit unless a petition for an administrative hearing is timely filed under Sections 120.569 and 120.57, F.S., before the deadline for filing a petition. On the filing

You just don’t run across glass blowers every day. At least not in the Keys, or not until you meet Donald McMullen from The Art Studio in Marathon.

Naturally, I was immediately pestering him for a glass blowing demonstration.

One marriage later (his and Christina’s who tied the knot on April 7), we finally got together for one of the most interesting hours I’ve ever spent and I learned lots. First, it’s not called glass blowing, rather borosilicate lampworking which has to do with the materials — sturdier, like Pyrex. The studio lessons begin at $45 for an hour where Donald makes a piece and then steps aside to let guests make their own from scratch under his sharp eye but gentle assistance. Things you can make range from beads and marbles all the way up to goblets. The classes begin the learning curve. “The first time it’s good, the next time it’s better,” Donald said. Reservations are required for the glass blowing, but not the glass fusion offered downstairs. The Art Studio is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the number is 305-2899013.

The 16th Judicial Circuit is currently accepting applications for a Pretrial Services team member for our Key West, Florida office. This is a professional position in the county court system responsible for monitoring and assisting defendants awaiting trial.

Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant must demonstrate abilities in interviewing/screening and telephone skills. A solid working proficiency with computers is required. Pretrial Services functions 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays. The Pretrial Service Officer works five days a week which may include early morning hours and weekends. The successful applicant will need strong interpersonal skills and be required to pass a background check. The salary for this position is $35,200 a year plus Monroe County benefits.
