DANNY HUGHES WITHDRAWS FROM KEY WEST MAYORAL RACE

W

hile speaking with Danny Hughes today, the Keys Weekly confirmed the local business owner has withdrawn his candidacy for Key West mayor. Although Hughes is battling a recent back injury, he remained positive and upbeat, citing a commitment to his family and business before all else.

“You know me,” said Hughes referring to his injury. “I don’t do anything unless I can give it 100 percent. And my family and my employees will always come first.”

Hughes, who has over 60 employees at Two Friends Patio and Bar, released the following statement from his political Facebook page: Hughes announced today he is ending his 2018 campaign for Key

For the 2016 general election, the Miami-Dade portion had 353,596 registered voters, while Monroe County had 54,749 registered voters — 13.4 percent of the 408,345 total registered voters in the district.

“I know that I must put aside my goal of serving the people of Key West as mayor, and address my health, so that I may continue to best serve the voters, my employees, and my family.”

ith more than 2,500 nominee ballots completed, year five of the Bubbas has proven to be one of the most contested on record. And as the nominee voting period comes to an end on Sunday, June 24, we encourage everyone who hasn’t cast a ballot to vote this weekend. After all, only a few votes, one way or the other, will decide who’s in … and who won’t make the cut in the top three of each category.

For those who live on Mars (or north of Layton), here is a breakdown on how the Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards are decided.

KEY WEST HISTORY Early Post Offices

T

he Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin the first Postmaster General in 1776.

Mail delivery has come a long way since those days. Monroe County’s first post office, if it could be called that, operated out of a house on the corner of Caroline and Front streets in Key West when it opened in February 1829. That home would later belong to Charles Tift. Mail was initially delivered via the 10-ton sailing ship Post Boy operating between Key West and Charleston, South Carolina. David Cole operated as the ship’s captain. Post Boy was once a common name for mail delivery ships. Theoretically, the round trip journey between the two ports took two months. Depending on weather, wind, and other delays, departures and arrivals generally proved late.

The second post office established in Monroe County opened under the name Indian Key Station on May 21, 1833. In the 1830s, the Upper Keys’ Indian Key was home to the largest community in the Florida Keys outside of Key West. Silas Fletcher, the man who built a general store on the island nearly a decade prior, was named postmaster.

Also in the Upper Keys, Key West’s famed wrecker Ben Baker, the man who introduced large scale pineapple farming to the island chain, petitioned

to open a post office on Key Largo, then called Cayo Largo.

The post office, with Baker as postmaster, operated from June 14, 1870 through October 10, 1871. In Planter, the coastal farming community predating Tavernier, a post office was established Dec. 23, 1891 with John Wesley Johnson appointed postmaster.

Because the harbor at Planter was too shallow to accommodate the mail ship City of Key West, operating between Key West and Coconut Grove, Johnson drove a piling into deeper waters offshore. It was equipped with two hangers—one to accommodate the outgoing mailbag and one to receive the incoming mail bag.

As with other conveniences, the arrival of Henry Flagler’s OverSea Railroad brought reliable mail service to the island chain.

Though the train would not arrive in Key West until 1912, daily service was established at the temporary terminus of Knights Key in 1908. A post office at Knights Key would open April 13, 1907 and be followed by the Crainlyn Post Office on Grassy Key Aug. 26, 1908.

The first Marathon Post Office opened Feb. 23, 1909.

NEWS: On June 19, a Coast Guard crew from Station Islamorada found 11 fins on a Tavernier-based commercial fishing boat, the Miss Shell. The boat was stopped for improper navigational lights, but when crew — accompanied by a Fish and Wildlife officer — boarded the boat they also found dismembered sharks and the fins. It is illegal to separate the fins from a shark while at sea. Officers are investigating and charges are pending.

SHARK FISHING FACTS: In the U.S., licensed fishers are permitted to catch certain species of shark, transport the whole animal back to shore and remove the fins there for sale. The definition of “finning” means to remove a shark’s fin at sea and toss the animal back to die. While finning is illegal in the U.S., shark fins can still be sold in the U.S. — something the proposed bill means to end. Since 2015, Miami has led the nation in the number of shark fins imported from Hong Kong, likely caused by an increasing number of import bans in other states. Twelve states currently ban imports. In 2017, Florida passed a bill to increase the penalties of fishermen found guilty of finning.

he ocean has had a profound impact on me for my entire life. Growing up just a few blocks away from the beach in California, I spent much of my free time surfing, skin diving and fishing. It was in this time in my youth that I came to love and appreciate the wonder of the ocean and its inhabitants. As an instructor at Rainbow Reef Dive Center in Key Largo, my very livelihood depends on keeping our oceans healthy and full of fish and other beautiful marine wildlife.

Recently, I had the pleasure to advocate for one of my favorite marine animals on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Sitting before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Water, Power and Oceans, I testified in support of the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (H.R. 1456) – a bill that would ban the trade of shark fins in the United States. The demand for shark fins, mainly used in shark fin soup, is one of the greatest threats to sharks

around the world. The fins from up to 73 million sharks make it into the global market every year. This demand has driven some populations of sharks to ever lower numbers, hurting dive businesses. In Key Largo, sadly, it has become much more rare to sight the Caribbean reef sharks that we used to see more of in the past. As dive professionals, it is hard for us to see shark populations suffer due to the fin trade instead of alive and swimming on our reefs.

We already know that as top predators, sharks play important roles in ocean ecosystems around the world.

But many people may not know that sharks play important roles in oceanbased tourism economies, including here in the United States. Multiple scientific studies have shown that shark-watchers spend hundreds of millions of dollars on shark ecotourism every year around the world, and that number is growing.

Last year, an independent economic study found that direct expenditures for shark encounters in the diving industry totaled more than $221 million and fueled more than 3,700 jobs in Florida alone, mine included.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that people in Florida love to see sharks. During the peak summer season, we will take up to 1,000 customers out to Key Largo’s reefs each week, and most of those customers want to see the bigger marine creatures like turtles, rays, and, most importantly, sharks. In fact, I have personally seen evidence of this horrible act in U.S. waters. On one of our deep wreck sites in Key Largo last year, we were horrified to find several sharks that were finned and dumped to die in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Unfortunately, we arrived likely long after the sharks were finned and dumped. It’s not impossible that the fins from the sharks I saw that day may have ended up in a bowl of soup served here in the U.S. There is a simple solution to this problem — to end the demand for shark fins in the United States, and to ensure that any fin cannot be sold here — by passing H.R. 1456, the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. Already, 12 states have banned the sale and trade of shark fins, joining 40 airlines, 20 major shipping companies, and seven large corporations. Support for this act is overwhelming — 8 in 10 Americans support a fin ban and over 500 U.S. businesses and organizations, including mine, and our local elected official, Congressman Carlos Curbelo.

The world is moving toward ending the shark fin trade, and the United States has an opportunity to be a leader. This opportunity should not be wasted.

When her mother lost her battle, Hiller switched career tracks from pediatric nurse to radiation technician and began the journey of bringing radiation and chemotherapy to thousands of Keys residents that previously was not available. She isn’t just the first Keys technician. She is also an administrator at 21st Century Oncology and co-founder of The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys, which aids cancer patients with financial assistance while undergoing treatment. Taking to heart the saying “Knowing what I know now,” Hiller has been at the helm in the battle against cancer in every way. She not only has honored her mother but so many residents giving them chance at life once not thought possible. With an infectious smile and amazing attitude, every day, Hiller does the most astonishing thing: she helps beat cancer.

How did you decide to become a radiation technician? When my mother had to leave Key West for radiation treatment, I remember thinking this cannot happen to anyone else. She missed possible chances to prevent the cancer from spreading. I kept thinking, it didn’t have to happen this way.

So I wanted to do something, and it was meant to be because I was 22, on the wait list that year, and still got into school. And by the time I was finished, a company wanted to open a clinic here and needed a technician.

ercy Hiller has done what most of us dream of: she honored her mother in the most profound way and, in doing so, has changed the lives of so many more. In bold lettering atop the 21st Century Oncology building, the Marta A. Gonzalez Cancer Center is named for Hiller’s mother. It also serves as a testimony to the tremendous work Hiller has done for cancer patients in the Florida Keys. When Marta Gonzalez had to leave the only home she loved to receive treatment, and Hiller couldn’t bear for anyone else from her hometown to have to do the same.

What’s a misconception about cancer treatment? 21st Century Oncology is one of the largest cancer care centers in the U.S., which means the care that patients receive here is the exact same care they would receive in any other city. We follow all the protocols, our physicians are well trained, and most diagnoses we can treat, just a few we can’t. A culinary comparison between the two islands

M

ore than 1.5 million Floridians identify as Cuban, and tourists flock to the Keys to get a taste of “Cuban” food. According to the Pew Research Foundation, immigration is spiking: 54,406 Cuban immigrants arrived in South Florida in 2016 alone. Many restaurants in the Lower Keys boast cultural authenticity, including such institutions as El Meson de Pepe and El Siboney.

Both El Meson de Pepe and El Siboney serve traditional dishes, like ropa vieja, picadillo, and bistec Cubano. Their menus also diverge into American and Mexican dishes like guacamole and even hamburgers, in a bid to satisfy the North American palate. A favorite local dish at Key West Cuban restaurants is camarones al ajillo: local pink shrimp cooked in a savory sauce of garlic butter. El Meson’s addition of red peppers and parsley is fresh and vegetal, accompanied by sliced lime for a pop of citrus.

Perhaps the most sought-after and contested culinary mainstay in the Keys is the Cuban mix sandwich. Sandy’s Café is widely known for the Cuban mix, and locals agree on the formula: roast pork and ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles, with mustard (and sometimes mayo) pressed on Cuban bread.

While the classic combination of roast pork and cheese pressed between bread has existed in Cuba for hundreds of years, the “Cuban mix” arrived in Florida via Cuban workers at cigar factories and sugar mills.

Over the years, ingredients have been added or subtracted, debated, and eventually,

devoured. Like the Cuban mix, many dishes considered “Cuban” in the minds and mouths of South Floridians are actually a departure from the food in Cuba itself.

Key West educator Ashlie Hood recently visited Cuba and experienced this firsthand.

“I was expecting to have an ‘El Siboney’ experience while dining in Cuba,” Hood said.

“That was not the case whatsoever!”

Indeed, the cuisine in Cuba lacks the variety of produce and proteins available year-round in the U.S. Pork and chicken are the primary proteins. Cuban families have libretas, or ration books, and receive chicken, rice, eggs, sugar, coffee, and cooking oil every 10 days. These ingredients are dominant, especially in the paladares — restaurants run out of private homes.

“We picked a quaint spot on the beach in Playa Guanabo, and my friend and I placed our order in broken Spanish, and to our surprise, we received a delicious chicken and rice plate and a small salad,” Hood said.

Produce in Cuba is limited by season and farmer’s yield, and imports are restricted by weighty taxation and trade embargoes.

Farmers in Cuba are also required to sell 70 percent of produce to the state at belowmarket prices. Thus, while selection is limited, fruits and vegetables are seasonal and extremely fresh. Pineapples, mangos and small bananas — platanitos — dominate the roadside fruit stands, as well as tomatoes and avocados where available.

“It’s kind of mind-blowing to go into someone’s living room-turned-restaurant and have a 10-minute conversation about how delicious a tomato is,” said Key West writer David Sloan. “All of the produce blows you away. They might not have everything all the time, but what I’ve had tasted fresh from the earth and better than anything I’ve had in the States since I was a kid and my parents had a garden.”

That said, U.S.-based vegetarians and vegans might find dining in Cuba a challenge.

The Cuban diet relies heavily on pork and chicken, as well as rice and beans. Menus are rare outside of hotels and high-end restaurants, and menu items are more often than not unavailable. Grocery store shelves more closely resemble U.S. gas station goods — cooking oil, canned tomatoes or olives, packaged snack foods — than the global bounty in American grocery stores. There is very little waste in Cuban cooking, and cooks make magic out of what is available “Cubans know how to prepare a pig. We took a few from farm to table,” Sloan said.

Indeed, it’s not unusual to see animals being butchered outside of restaurants, even on the sidewalks of Havana.

Whole salt-baked fish can be found readily in coastal towns, as well as occasional shrimp and lobster, for a price. Fresh eggs and fruit — and strong hot coffee—are served for breakfast in Cuban homes and paladares. Cuban coffee isn’t served sweetened or with milk, despite “Cuban” café con leche in Key West traditionally coming with both. Milk is scarce in Cuba.

Samantha Perera, a server in Havana, sums up the Cuban diet: “Pork, definitely — and fish, because we are an island. And of course rice and beans. Rice and beans every day — it has to be on our table all the time.”

What might Cubans criticize when it comes to food in the U.S.? Perera says: “You have these tiny avocados. I have an avocado tree, and they are huge, and they aren’t purple like yours — they are bright green. I think your avocados suck.” Avocados aside, Americans may find themselves yearning for the gastronomic diversity available in Key West. But for an authentic Cuban dining experience, one need only travel 90 miles south.

Sayer is a Marathon resident who graduated from Marathon High School. She and her wife, M.P., are raising two boys and are active in many civic activities like youth sports and volunteer their time for many community events like the 7 Mile Bridge Run and Mara-Tri. “That list is about to grow significantly,” she added.

She joined the credit union nine years ago as director of technology and was named interim executive vice president this past October.

Sayer will work with outgoing CEO Scott Duszynski to ensure a smooth transition. Ron Demes, chairman of the Keys Federal board, said, “Maggie is the perfect choice to lead Keys Federal Credit Union into the future.”

lorida’s 26th Congressional District race, for years, has been an election battleground district. With Monroe County being one of four Florida pivot counties, all bets are off when it comes to the highly contested seat come November.

FAQ about the ‘YELLOW TICKET’ What to know about new hurricane re-entry rules

G

etting a community back up and running after a natural disaster is no easy task, and for that reason, businesses and residents vital to the recovery process will now have two unique options for gaining early re-entry after future disasters.

Monroe County Emergency Management has come up with a placard program for businesses and their employees, and the Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps program for residents.

“We’re calling this the 90-percent solution. We wanted to come out with a solution quickly, and you can poke some holes in this because it’s not the perfect plan, but it’s much, much better than we had before,” said Monroe County Emergency Management Director Martin Senterfitt. “We wanted to roll out something for this hurricane season and the plan is the way it is.”

These are some frequently asked questions, answered by county spokeswoman Cammy Clark and Senterfitt.

Who is eligible?

• Businesses/Organizations: The Placard Reentry Program is new this year, and businesses (like grocery stores and banks) or organizations believing they have an essential response mission can apply for inclusion in the Placard Program through Emergency Management. Businesses apply at www. monroecountyem.com/placardprogram. Applying for placards isn’t an automatic “yes.”

Applications undergo review by Emergency Management and only those business/organizations that can show their employees are essential to recovery and that the business/ organization has a plan on how to take care of those employees in the direct aftermath of a storm will receive the placards.

• Residents: Individual volunteers who want to come in early, and who are not considered emergency workers for their employer or organizations, need to go through CERT training to be eligible for the placard.

Senterfitt said the first round of 35 trainers have been trained and the course has been compressed to include an online course and then 16 hours of classroom time. He said the online course takes about 4 hours.

Upcoming dates for training will be announced in early July. Volunteering residents apply at www.monroecounty-fl.gov/volunteermonroe.

How long is the “yellow ticket” good for?

The 2018 placard is good for 2018 only. The organization/business must renew each year by going through the same application process. People only have to go through the major CERT training one time, but to renew their placard, they must go through a refresher training course each year to learn new information about the county’s emergency management plans for that particular year.

When should a business pass out placards to employees?

Businesses/organizations will be given their allotment of placards in advance, but they should not be given out to individuals until a storm is brewing.

Are there background checks on individuals applying?

Not at this time.

Do you do anything to verify businesses can support their own employees?

Emergency Management will review the business/organization’s plan and decide if it appears appropriate for a disaster.

Do window sticker decals still work?

Re-entry windshield stickers remain in place for residents and business owners by zones and get people into certain areas before the return of visitors and people who do not live in the Keys. These stickers do not get residents in early, like the placards do for emergency workers.

How long will it take for a person to go through the classes; when do they get the ticket?

Businesses do not have to go through training classes. They have to fill out an application. Only individual volunteers who want to come in early, and are not considered emergency workers for their employer or organizations, need to go through the CERT training to be eligible to get the placard.

How long will it take a business to get the placard?

Once Emergency Management receives the application, review will take place within 21 days. If approved, the business/organization can pick up the placard at any point after the approval at the Emergency Management office in Marathon.

It’s one placard per car, but what if I have my kids/spouse with me?

The placards are only for employees whose employer/organization has a plan and means to take care of those workers during a disaster. That being said, if the employee brings in a spouse or children they must also be able to take care of them in a disaster situation — which in most cases is not a good situation for kids due to limited medical services, lack of air conditioning, etc.

What is the first thing an emergency worker should do?

It depends. But in all cases the emergency worker should coordinate with his/her employer or organization in advance to know where they will be housed, get food and what they will be doing for the recovery. For public safety, every person who is able to help in the recovery multiplies the capability of the recovery.

ummer Stage 2018 sets its “Festival of Stage Arts” in motion on Tuesday, June 26 with the Fringe Theater production of “The Gin Game” by D.L. Coburn, playing through Saturday night. The play will be presented at the Woman’s Club, 319 Duval St. All curtains are at 7 p.m.

The show is the first of several theatrical events on the Summer Stage schedule that includes productions by TheatreXP, Fringe Theater, the Red Barn, the Studios of Key West, and the Key West Theater.

Summer Stage events run through July 28.

“The Gin Game” enjoyed a sold out run at the Fringe last season.

When asked what she’d like to do for Summer Stage this year, Fringe artistic director Rebecca Tomlinson didn’t hesitate.

“There were so many people who didn’t get a chance to see this remarkable play,” Tomlinson said.

“We sold out so fast and didn’t have the ability to extend the run during the season. So we’re really excited to be able to bring it back for Summer

Stage, and with the same cast and crew.”

“The Gin Game” stars Vanessa McCaffrey as the withdrawn Fonsia Dorsey, and Don Bearden as the excitable and sometimes surly Weller Martin. They are residents at a retirement home that has seen better days, and at their first meeting, Weller draws Fonsia into a game of gin rummy, despite her not knowing how to play. During their games, they learn a lot about each other, but the fact that Fonsia continually beats Weller begins to weigh on their relationship.

“The Gin Game” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Coburn, and garnered nominations for Tonys and Drama Desk Awards.

udget constraints and a decreased workload mean the Florida Department of Environmental Health office in Marathon will close June 30.

Public information officer Alison Kerr said the clinic, Ruth Ivins Center at MM 49 oceanside, will remain open and nothing will change in terms of service from the environmental health side.

Eight employees work Keyswide for the environmental health sector of the health department and one person will be laid off as a result of the Middle Keys office closure.

Middle Keys issues will be handled by Keyswide employees after June 30.

“The health department will continue to provide environmental health aid over the phone, email, and at our other locations in the Lower and Upper Keys,” said Bill Brookman, environmental health and community health director.

So what do environmental health workers oversee?

“They inspect body-piercing facilities, tattoo shops and are in charge of several programs, inspecting any hospital or clinic that produces more than 25 pounds of biomedical waste,” Kerr said.

Anyone who had a septic tank that wasn’t connected to central sewer lines would get a visit from inspectors, and now that most homes are connected, there is a lower workload, especially in the Middle Keys, Kerr said.

Pools, spas and tanning bed facilities are inspected by environmental health workers.

They’re also responsible for making sure the water is safe to swim in at Keys beaches.

“We still have our offices in Key West and Tavernier, so our inspectors are all going to have the same responsibilities.

It’s just that particular office in Marathon will be closed,” Kerr said.

At the Ruth Ivins clinic, routine services and programs will continue. Those include immunizations, WIC, Healthy Start, family planning and HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention.

“We’ll still be doing everything we normally do. If anyone needs to process anything in person with environmental health, they’d have to refer to the Upper or Lower Keys, but a lot can be done through email or a phone call,” Kerr said.

The Key West environmental health office is in the DJJ Building, 5503 College Road and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Tavernier office is in the Roth Building, 50 High Point Road, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Ruth Ivins Center in Marathon is open and will remain open on Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

COMPARING OPTIONS

Grants could fortify Keys homes, properties GABRIEL SANCHEZ

ollowing last year’s hurricane it has become obvious that residents who are rebuilding need to consider their home’s susceptibility to flooding.

Monroe County staff has been gauging public interest since January to determine which housing grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Housing and Urban Development offer the best support in short-term recovery and long-term flood prevention.

County staff are asking those still interested to complete its online survey before August.

Input will be used to prioritize potential housing programs that align best with the goal for mitigation reconstruction.

There are several options, but two types of programs in particular, home elevation grants and home “buy-back” grants, are garnering interest. Both can go a long way in helping homeowners protect themselves from the damages of flooding and prevent even more losses, said Mark Boone, senior administrator of the county flood program.

The elevation grant program raises low-lying homes a minimum of 1 foot above base flood elevation. The grant itself covers 75 percent of the cost associated with raising a home and leaves homeowners responsible for the other 25 percent. Homeowners can raise homes higher than base flood elevation at their own expense. At its new elevation, the home is considered able to withstand all but 1 percent of storms. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is looking to revise its flood maps over the next two years, said Boone.

Stock Island resident Michele Lynn said after considering her options, the elevation grant program seems like the best possible solution for her.

Her home was not heavily damaged but did have water from the street enter her front door. “Had it been any significant amount of flooding, the house would have been destroyed,” she said.

Lynn is planning to raise her home not only to mitigate flood damage, but also to create more room for parking. “Parking is premium around here. If you go up 9 to 12 feet you’ve now created another place to park and maximized the property,” she said.

Each year Lynn pays nearly $4,800 in flood insurance. That’s almost $4,000 more than her friend living in Big Coppitt pays for her elevated home with roughly the same square footage.

“They are telling us insurance prices are possibly going up 20 percent a year,” she said.

There are two buy-back grants, one from FEMA and the other from HUD, for residents to consider. Those who have suffered heavy damages and can’t afford to rebuild their homes should consider these programs, said Boone.

Both programs are voluntary and allow residents to sell their land and home to the county so they can move out of properties at risk of future flooding. Homes purchased would be valued at pre-Irma prices.

Monroe County is expecting to apply for FEMA’s Hazardous Mitigation Grant Program in August. The earliest officials expect to have funding is early next year. A timetable for releasing funds for HUD’s Community Development Block Grant has not been released, but HUD is expected to approve the state action plan and begin drafting grant agreements with Florida’s department of equal opportunity. n Thursday, June 28, Key West Art & Historical Society’s Distinguished Speaker Series welcomes historian Ryan Harke to the Custom House Museum, 281 Front St., where he will present research from his dissertation on the “Southernmost Pre-Columbian Site.” The 6 p.m. presentation investigates the possibility of whether Stock Island was a seasonal fishing ground

used by mainland natives or the site of a permanent year-round village.

“Knowing whether it was a yearround village provides a platform for other exciting research in the future,” said Harke, a doctoral student and professor of archaeology and anthropology at the University of South Florida. “If it was year-round, how was that culture related to other native chiefdoms on the mainland, like the

Tequesta in Miami or the Calusa in southwest Florida?”

For more than eight years, he has conducted compliance archaeology throughout Florida and has served as a public archaeologist for the Florida Public Archaeology Network at Flagler College in St. Augustine. Harke’s primary interest is in the relationship between small-scale foraging economies and fragile ecosystems.

“I’ve always been interested in coastal Native American populations in Florida, especially those that relied primarily on the sea for their livelihood,” says Harke. “So little is known about the natives who lived in the Keys.”

Harke is studying one of the biggest Pre-Columbian habitations ever known in the Keys and the second archaeological site recorded in Monroe County (located where the prison and its parking lot now are). By studying the black-earth mound and a large midden of shells, fish, shark, sea turtle, shellfish, and the now extinct Caribbean Monk seal and pygmy sperm whale remains found there, Harke can determine how Florida Keys Native Americans interacted with their island environments 800 years ago, including knowing what species they ate and what tools they used.

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) and its partners have awarded $81,000 in teacher awards and student scholarships to further education, teaching and academic pursuits in the Florida Keys.

Eight Key West High School (KWHS) teachers received a total of $40,000 through the David Wolkowsky 2018 Teachers of Merit Awards. Wolkowsky, a Key West philanthropist and businessman, gives the awards annually to teachers who go the extra mile in giving their time, energy and expertise to students. CFFK has administered the awards since 2001.

The Community Foundation and its donors also awarded $41,000 to 11 KWHS graduating seniors, through scholarships to continue their education and awards in recognition of their academic achievements.

“The Teachers of Merit Awards and the student scholarships are key examples of how philanthropy is positively impacting the future of education in the Florida Keys,” said Dianna Sutton, president and CEO of CFFK. Incorporated in 1997, Islamorada translates as Purple Islands or Island Home in Spanish. T

here is only one written document more closely guarded than Vice Honcho Lenny Salazar’s breakfast club book, and that’s the United States Constitution.

“I am going to share this with you, but you have to protect it with your life,” he said at Kennedy Café.

The Long-Time Local’s Breakfast Club book is filled with pictures and mementos from its years of daily meetings. One time the group put out a wanted poster for one of the founding members, Chippy Fernandez. The next day, he showed up incognito with a wig and mustache. They’ve brought in cans and strings to make phones, and all enjoy a good jab at the members in attendance.

The original group was five members; it now boasts about two dozen.

They reminisce, sharing funny stories of the good old Key West days. Salazar, savvy about making newsletters and keeping the books, photoshops the group’s members walking on the moon, on vacation, on magazine front pages for baseball, golf, and the AARP, “sporadically published when remembered.”

The group is made up of retired locals, whose past Key West jobs included arcade owner, Sears salesman, postmasters, public works, and more.

They started meeting for breakfast at Dennis Pharmacy, then The Deli, Lulu’s, Lucky Day, and now Kennedy Café.

“We tried Denny’s, but we linger for more than an hour, and they weren’t too happy about that,” said Salazar.

Since incorporation, the group has a logo and membership cards for inductees. Fernandez has been the unanimous pick for mayor since inception. There is only one commandment: don’t touch someone else’s coffee carafe; you could lose a hand.

n Sand Sculpting ArtCamp in Key West, students used trowels, brushes, forks and knives to create a sculpture inspired by the Angkor Wat religious temple complex in Cambodia, the largest in the world, constructed in the early 12th century as a temple for Vishnu, Hindu god of preservation. The children also made avatar masks representing the many faces of Vishnu.

Weekly ArtCamp! sessions at Fort East Martello run a creative gamut to touch upon a variety of arts, culture, and the humanities to get children thinking, moving, and making.
