A century ago, big band ensembles structured their orchestras with more than 10 musicians and instruments to play the popular ballroom and jazz hits of the time. Twenty-five years ago grunge and hard rock bands acts relied on two electric guitars, a bass guitar, drums and the power of their long hair to get the job done. Today’s electronic dance music (EDM for short) uses beat machines, turntables and modulation to emulate just about any sound you can imagine. So the Weekly asked…

illage workers are preparing a list of suggestions for the Village Council to review, and potentially adopt, to streamline aspects of the planning and permitting process.

“We asked [Village staff] to bring back a list of things that we don’t need to bother with,” said Islamorada Mayor Chris Sante. A local developer, Sante said he understands the health and safety considerations behind nuanced permitting requirements, but also said he believes there items in the code that could be removed.

The removal of some steps related to fencing permits has also been mentioned, but Corradino recommended the village not remove fencing permits, because it may eliminate necessary inspections that ensure fences conform to village code. Streamlining the process is possible, however.

Council member Cheryl Meads believes that substantial changes should be made so average residents can repair or improve their home without going through a lengthy process.

“I think we should look for opportunities to remove the requirement to permit things that makes sense to average people … the people who are trying to do things like repair and replace fences, windows, and air conditioners,” said Meads.

She offered an example.

“I don’t think that local government needs to be involved in your pea rock.

There are some things that make sense, that need to get permitted, but we need to look at what should and shouldn’t require a permit,” said Meads. “It boils down to ‘does requiring certain permitting add value to our village, or are they just headache and a tax?’”

Corradino said that as the village gets deeper into the process, the code will likely need to be rewritten. Starting Sunday, July 1, all inspections in the village will be required to be requested through the village’s online cvportal.us/ CityViewPortal. Permitting Services will re-open on Fridays starting Friday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to noon. The village implemented Friday closures earlier in March to deal with the backlog of permits submitted after Irma.

PERMIT-ABLE TIMING

17 items identified to quicken Village permitting

Interim Planning Director Joseph Corradino said staff has already identified 17 items, including areas in the code where the duties of the building and planning departments overlap, like paving permits. The building department is responsible for the intake and issuance of building permits, inspections, plan review, and to enforce all applicable Florida building codes. The planning department is responsible for administering the village’s land use plan and assists in the permit processing. Staff will present a full list of items to discuss with the council at its next regular meeting on Thursday, June 14.

“I think we can make it easier without lowering the standards the village has put in place,” said Corradino.

One idea Corradino offered was the return of “Walkthrough Wednesdays” — in which applicants go to the Village Administration building, and as long as their paperwork is done correctly, can have certain permitting concerns taken care of quickly. Items that are expected to be expedited are simple permit approvals and non-life safety items.

ell, hurricane season got off to a wet and premature start. Hopefully Alberto was not a harbinger of what is in store for the Florida Keys. Unfortunately, hurricanes have always been part of the deal for those who have chosen to call these islands home—and for those who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

While hurricanes always affect the island chain as a whole, each storm reveals a unique and often specific story.

The eye of the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 crossed over Long and Lower Matecumbe keys. The majority of the death and the destruction of physical property occurred on Upper and Lower Matecumbe keys, with significant damage stretching from Duck Key to Tavernier.

Wind gusts exceeded 200 mph.

The massive tidal surge measured 18-20 feet. The barometric pressure, the measure by which the power of a hurricane is determined, was 26.35 inches when the storm struck the island chain. It is the lowest reading ever recorded in a storm striking North America. In addition to taking

roughly 500 lives, the hurricane destroyed 40 miles of Henry Flagler’s railroad. The Over-Sea Railroad would never operate again.

In a related piece of history associated with the Weather Bureau, 1935 was the first year automated weather instruments mounted on buoys began collecting marine weather data. It was also the year the bureau developed a hurricane warning system. Forecasting switched from a centralized Washington office to four distinct tropical hurricane forecasting offices in Boston, Jacksonville, New Orleans, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

None of these advancements had any bearing on the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 when the first hurricane warning issued by the Weather Bureau for the Florida Keys was issued at 3:30 a.m. on the day the storm arrived. “Tropical disturbance still of small diameter but considerable intensity moving slowly westwards off the coast of north-central Cuba. Bridge Run returns in Key Largo The Key Largo Bridge Run returns this year with a new start/finish line, a beautiful post-race area and new management company.

The run will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, starting at 7:30 a.m. The start/finish line for the 5K & 10K distances will be on the side road leading to Gilbert’s Resort, with the post-race party at Gilbert’s. The course is similar to that of previous years, with a few minor changes to accommodate the new start/finish line.

“With us being the new management company producing the race, the participants can expect to enjoy a heightened experience,” said Enrique “Henry” Menendez, president of HNO Productions. “We want to bring back an event the community loves and visitors enjoy.”

Lisa Lee Herman can literally do it all

Be it piano keys, canvas or camera lens, Lisa Lee Herman has put no limits on where to let her creative juices seep. Don’t be fooled by her modesty, either. A classically trained pianist and painter, Herman has more talents than you’d imagine could come from someone who already exudes gusto. After living in the Windy City for a few years, Herman couldn’t bear the cold any longer, and decided to trade the city life for an island life. Since arriving in the Keys she’s opened her studio – Gallery of the Arts – in Tavernier, and holds private art and piano lessons along with fun sip-and-paint and card-making classes. When she’s not tutoring the next Mozart or Picasso, Herman can be found fishing off the back of a boat somewhere, being sassy, and living her best life.

You studied classical piano under the masters in France and Belgium. How was that? It was intense. Like six to eight hours in a practice room. But it turned me into a piano player I never thought I could become. You’d have a different guest teacher every day, and they’d be like, “play,” and you’d think you were playing the best you’d ever played, and they’d just rip you apart.

Then work with you. On day one if someone would have told me what I’d be playing by the end, I would have said “no way.”

Who’s on your piano Mount Rushmore?

Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Debussy and Chopin.

You also studied photography and abstract painting at the Edinburgh College of Arts in Scotland. What was the most scenic part of Scotland? I think standing in the College of Arts looking out over the Edinburgh castle was stunning. I loved Scotland; it was so green and so lush. The sky was sapphire blue. I loved all the music and the pubs. It was like Mecca. Everyone had red hair, so I felt right at home.

How’d you get the nickname “Alpha Ginger?” I came in as the assistant to the CEO and office manager at Groove Shark and I kind of just earned the nickname among the three or four other gingers. I left before they were formally sued (which was one of the largest lawsuits in entertainment history – something like $16,000,000,000 – and somebody sent me a screen shot of the docket and it said “Lisa Lee Herman a.k.a the Alpha Ginger” on the lawsuit. I walked away before they went under, but it was fun while it lasted.

Do you giggle every time you say “pianist?” No, I always feel awkward saying it. Everybody thinks I’m going to slide in like Goose and start playing “Great Balls of Fire” or something like that.

That’s not what I do. I teach the ABCs 123s to beginners, get them excited, then move on. I’m classically trained so I play stuff like Debussy and Chopin. I like almost every genre of music, except pop country.

Any Mozarts in the making?

There is so much talent down here. I have one girl from Coral Shores that just started playing maybe two years ago and she’s tackling Debussy’s “Clair de Lune.” That’s an astronomically difficult piece. That would be something I would have to learn to play. She came to me wanting to learn it, and I said “maybe in a few years.” A week later she had the first two pages down. You could teach for 30 years and not get a student like that.

Ever met anyone famous? I did T-shirts for Captain Wild Bill from “The Deadliest Catch.” It was a mermaid and she had two Alaskan King Crabs covering her bits. It was awesome. When it went to the editing room, she had to be ‘enhanced,’ because I didn’t make them big enough. Sorry, Captain Wild Bill.

What question do you get the most as a ginger? “Why are you living in such a sunny state when you’re so pale?” I just use what I like to call “SPF space suit” and get on with my day.

You’re a fan of another ginger – comedian Bill Burr. Which is your favorite bit?

I probably shouldn’t because they’re all so raunchy, but I will say that I love how real he is. We just went up there to see him at the Hard Rock.

Any hidden talents? I can solve a Rubik’s cube over and over again. A lot of practice on riding the trains in Chicago. Back then there wasn’t WiFi on my 10-minute commute, so I learned one step at a time. It’s all algorithms and memorization. You solve it by layer. Don’t think of it as six faces, its only three layers, it gets a little easier from there. I love puzzles.

Today is your birthday! What are you wishing for? I can’t tell you my wish or else it won’t come true. It was a big one.

“Y

ou probably have heard enough about hurricanes,” but on Monday, Mote Marine’s Dr. David Vaughn told the volunteers of Save-a-Turtle what is happening underwater. “You can’t see it from the side of the road,” he said.

The visibility was horrendous for weeks after the storm, making it difficult even to survey the damage. Hurricane Irma’s wake left the waters surrounding the Keys a milky white, which between the cloudy water and the sediment that sandblasted the reef, left serious damage.

ON THE REEF Three things played a role in the health of local corals during Hurricane Irma — the distance from the eye of the storm, the distance from the outer edge of the reef, and the size of the coral.

In the transplant areas, like American Shoal, before and after pictures were compared. The before picture: a group of five corals with an aluminum tag for each cluster being held to the hard bottom by a cast iron nail. Around the thriving area, sea fans swayed in the currents and algae had started to grow on the sea floor.

After the storm, the nails were the only thing left.

“The distance from the storm made a big difference,” said Vaughn, who pointed out that many of the coral transplant areas were in Irma’s direct path.

What also made a big difference was whether the plantings were on the outer barrier reef versus the inshore reefs.

“Life in the Florida Keys would not be possible without the reef,” he said, explaining how the outer reef broke up the 30-foot waves, the inner reefs broke up the 15-foot waves, and the houses along the shoreline took the surge and 8-foot waves. “There is not one house on these islands that could take 30-foot waves.”

Off Cook Island, the massive corals did fine, although they are still wrapped in a lot of debris, lines and traps.

Moving further away from the eye, on Sand Key off Key West were two-year post plantings that held better than the American Shoal plantings. The 25-mile difference still wiped the algae off the corals, but the main parts of the tissue were intact. “The good news is we can put them back,” he said. “This shows us one thing: size matters, not age.”

Of the 12,000 corals planted on the snorkel trail off Ft. Zachary Taylor, only one was missing from the storm.

Sherri Crilly, vice president of Save-a-Turtle, said of Looe Key, “it looked better three weeks after the storm than it does now; every time I go out there it looks worse.” Mote planted 5,000 corals inside the special protected area.

Vaughn explained how the sediment is smothering the corals out there, but slowly the reef will come back to all of its glory. “The soft corals are already coming back,” said Crilly. “And the sea life – including the goliath groupers – are already thriving again.”

Of the 105 coral trees planted around Looe Key — each with 120 corals dangling from it — only five survived Hurricane Irma. One tree was found off Cape Coral, Florida. Vaughn said the coral count should be back up to 7,000 this summer.

INSIDE THE LAB Hurricane Hugo destroyed eight years of oyster research in North Carolina and Dr. Michael Crosby at Mote Marine said if he ever had the chance to build something that could withstand a Category 5 storm, he would. Mote Marine christened the new building last year, just in time. More than 14,000 corals moved inside to the wet labs were saved and it’s a good thing, since the direct hit of Irma brought 4.5 feet of storm surge and high winds. “We were able to save 85 percent of the outside nursery corals,” said Vaughn.

During the storm, Vaughn and other employees who stayed behind were throwing outside corals into the empty shark tanks to try and save them. It worked. Since the storm, the 38 tanks, known as raceways, have been rebuilt.

THERE IS HOPE Hurricane Wilma in 2005 completely wiped out Cancun’s reef by Isla Mujeres, when Vaughn was sent to help with fragmentation. Last month, he was invited back, not to help with more fragmentation, but to see what he had rebuilt.

Starting with tops of Coke bottles cut in half with the coral cemented in the top of it, today the rebuilt reef is flourishing with fish, hard corals and natural soft corals. “This is what we will expect three to five years from now,” he said regarding local reefs.

A number of countries around the world are learning how to do this. “We can’t afford to lose the coral habitat,” he said. “It won’t matter 100 years from now if all the species are gone if we rebuild the reefs; we have to save the habitat now.”

In the Keys, the reef supports 70,000 jobs and $1 billion in local industries.

“We learned about bleaching in the ’70s,” said Vaughn. “We thought that was a once-in-acentury event and lost about 20 percent of corals.” Then, in the ’80s, there were back-to-back years of bleaching, where 5 to 10 percent of the corals were lost.

“We have had bleaching 12 out of the last 18 years,” he said. “There is some natural resistance out there; we lost the susceptible ones.”

Mote has been working with multiple genotypes that show natural resiliency. “We want our corals to win the Summer Olympics in 2050,” he said. “But, right now, it’s a Band-Aid, it’s not solving the underlying problem that is causing the bleaching.”

Twenty years ago, a good reef was considered to be at 50 percent coverage; today the average is around 6 to 7 percent.

Jordahl was certified as a sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers after graduating from the University of Central Florida’s acclaimed Rosen College of Hospitality Management.

“She knows how to pair wines with people’s personalities or even to how their day is going,” said wedding planner Julia Timmins of Blue Water Weddings. “Visiting Sea Grapes is just like visiting Ashley’s home, it’s so cozy and you get the same attention and service every time.”

Most rosé wines are categorized by color, said Jordahl. The colors and shades come from maceration – when grapes are pressed and the juice itself rests on the skin, causing the color.

Just like reds and whites, rosé wines vary in dryness and sweetness, while some are still and others are sparkling.

Different shades are the result of different wine-making processes, Jordahl said.

“Vin gris is when you use all red grapes but still have a very short maceration time. Saignee is when you ferment the wine and ‘bleed off’ a portion of red wine juice as soon as it’s the color you want,” she said. “Also, there’s blending, when you literally mix red and white wine together. Any white or red grapes can be used in rosé wines.”

Rosé wines also have distinguishing regional characteristics because of the soil and terrain. Wines from California are known to be more fruit forward in taste than wines from regions like Provence, France, which has minerality to its taste, said Jordahl.

ore than 9,000 Realtors were in Washington, D.C. last month – to attend special issues forums and committee meetings related to issues in housing, real estate, and flood insurance – including the leadership of the Florida Keys Board of Realtors.

The Keys Realtors arrived in the nation’s capital to show support for a handful of policies: stronger net neutrality protections, equal housing opportunities for the LGBTQ community, the impact of new tax policies and – most importantly to many in the Keys – to urge elected officials to consider long-term

authorization of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP.) The NFIP aims to lessen the impact of flood damage by, among other things, regulating insurance rates for property owners, renters and businesses. Reauthorization of the program should be a critical concern for Keys residents with the hurricane season that began June 1. The program’s most recent iteration extended the authorization through July 31. Hurricane season runs through November.

FEMA has assured homeowners that if the program’s authorization lapses that it would still ensure the payment of claims. But a lapse also would mean that FEMA would halt signups and renewals for millions of

flood insurance policies. The National Association of Realtors estimates the freeze would affect 40,000 home sale closings per month.

That reality has made reauthorization a top priority for the Upper Keys Board of Realtors. Following last year’s hurricane season it became glaringly apparent that states affected by hurricanes, like Florida, need to have more stable financial backing for their residents and municipal governments.

“Right now they are (reauthorizing the program) every 30 days,” said Board of Realtors CEO Lynda Anthony, adding that risk for catastrophic flooding is highest between June and November hurricane season.

Monroe County officials, like Mark Boone, senior administrator of Monroe County’s Floodplain Program, are imploring residents to obtain flood insurance coverage before any storms arrive. The NFIP is the main source of flood insurance coverage for residential properties in the United States.

“We’ve seen too many people lose everything,” said Boone. “The goal is to get this thing reauthorized permanently. Senators are looking at ways to change FEMA to match what the needs of the people are.”

Keys school district to start one-year trial in the fall

n two months, Keys high school students wishing to play sports or be involved in extracurricular activities related to sports will have to consent to being randomly tested for drugs and alcohol.

The program would have gone into effect in fall 2017, but after Hurricane Irma, the Monroe County School Board did not think it feasible to start drug testing mid-year.

The board last month approved the program on a trial basis for one year, starting in August. The drug test does not check for steroids.

Dave Murphy, district director of assessment and accountability, said pending board approval at the Tuesday, June 12 meeting, the drug-testing program will be fine-tuned over the summer for its fall rollout. The exact cost has not been set yet.

Although it’s something he voted for, board Chairman Bobby Highsmith said the program is controversial.

“Our school district would be in the definite minority across the nation of schools implementing these programs,” he said. “However, given the requests coming from principals and athletic directors, people whose opinions I value greatly, I’m willing to try this on a one-year basis and see what effects, if any, this has on curbing teen drug or alcohol use as well as any peripheral effects regarding participation in sports and extracurricular activities.”

According to the district’s Interscholastic Athletics Alcohol and Drug Testing Policy, this is how it’ll go:

1. WHO High school student athletes and those involved in extracurricular activities related to sports, including but not limited to cheerleaders and members of the marching band.

2. HOW Students must consent to drug testing. No consent means no participation. This includes consenting to further random testing at any time “upon reasonable suspicion.” Coaches will submit their rosters, including student names and ID numbers, to athletic directors. Names are assigned a random number for testing by the district from the current rosters and entered into Microsoft Excel’s random generating program.

Names and identities remain unknown until all the selections have been completed, Athletic directors will run the random student selection process.

On a testing day, up to 25 percent of student athletes will be randomly selected for a urine test.

The student is escorted out of the class by staff to the testing area. Coaches, athletic trainers, secretaries, and student aides will not be allowed inside the bathroom with the student. The student is alone when providing the sample.

3. WHAT Students are being tested for the following substances: alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamines, amphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, oxycodone and anti-depressants.

4. RESULTS Initially, there is an on-site screening of the sample. If positive, it’s sealed and sent to a lab. “A limited number of tests will be provided free of charge through our partnership with AHEC (Area Health Education Center Inc.).

The exact costs of the program and number of tests will need to be reevaluated since a year has lapsed since the policy was first approved,” Murphy said. “It is a law enforcement lab that will do the test, but no student name will be attached to a sample that’s sent down.”

Should there be a positive result, the lab will submit the positive drug or alcohol test result to the school’s athletic director, resulting in “appropriate action.”

5. TESTING POSITIVE If a student tests positive for a substance, the discipline is as follows: • First infraction: Suspension from sport for 10 days, but required to attend and be sidelined at practice. After five school days, student can participate in practice.

No playing at scheduled games until providing documentation of a free three-hour state-licensed and accredited drug/alcohol counseling or rehab/ education program.

• Second time: Student suspended from sport for 30 days. Practice allowed, observed from sidelines, and participation in practice allowed after 20 days. Three-hour drug/alcohol course required, along with subsequent school-based drug tests.

• Third time: Student is suspended from sports for the rest of the school year.

s employers across the nation take a more lax approach to testing potential employees for marijuana, it’s still considered a no-no in the Florida Keys.

From coast to coast, eight states and the District of Columbia allow recreational marijuana use, while Florida is in a group of 29 states allowing use of medical marijuana.

That does not change the fact that several of Monroe County’s largest employers still test for a wide array of drugs, including pot.

Of the private-sector employers the Keys Weekly called, none exempted marijuana from the banned substances.

All of Ocean Reef Country Club’s 1,100 in-season employees must pass a broad-spectrum drug test to work at the largest private-sector employer in the Keys.

“We have everything from bartenders, food and beverage servers to engineers, those in the accounting departments, tennis pros … everything you would imagine at a private country club,” said Molly Carroll, director of communications.

Medical marijuana In Florida, 71 percent of voters in the 2016 general election supported the availability of medical.

That was far more than the 60 percent needed to pass state constitutional Amendment 2, allowing pot as treatment for patients with specific diseases.

But the details were hazy and it took a while for the state to decide how people with those diseases should be able to consume the prescribed pot.

What comes out of a dispensary is not the leafy green associated with the word “marijuana,” and the state has yet to approve the (smoke-able) THC flower as a delivery method.

Patients with cancer, epilepsy, chronic seizures and muscle spasms qualify for low-THC cannabis, sometimes prescribed in liquid form delivered under the tongue with a dropper.

A patient whose condition is imminently terminal can qualify for full-potency medical marijuana with certification from two physicians.

Because each dispensary has different plants, it’s like testing different brands of cola, said Key West physician Dr. John Norris.

“They all taste different,” he said.

“Dosing this is a nightmare. It all depends on what you’re getting, and because they’re all different, it’s not like I’m prescribing a specific dose.”

Still, the message from patients and organizations to the state is that people have the right to smoke it, he said.

“We’re actually not concerned about whole flower getting approved because our goal is to help the patients take the medicine easily and effectively,” said Tracy Timura, regional director of IONA Cannabis Clinic of the Florida Keys.

IONA just had its grand opening in Islamorada and has more than 100 patients.

“The response is overwhelming and positive in every aspect. We’re a physician practice, not a dispensary,” she said. “The medicine right now is very effective.”

Delivery methods include topical creams, patches, oil for vaping and tinctures of CBD oil and THC, she said.

Soon, IONA will open a Key West location.

Between Key Largo and Key West, there are 10 certified physicians who can prescribe medical marijuana but there is not a single dispensary in Monroe County. Yet.

Dive to help reef on World Oceans Day

his weekend, as part of the “March for the Ocean,” ocean lovers will plant corals and save a reef at Coralpalooza – a festival of reef restoration.

Oceans are facing ecological collapse. Without immediate action, all shallow coral reef ecosystems could be lost in the next 80 years. But data shows that with proper management and habitat restoration, marine ecosystems recover. This is the guiding principle behind the work of the world’s largest coral restoration organization, the Coral Restoration Foundation – a non-profit that is restoring coral reefs on a massive scale.

The foundation, based in Key Largo, main-

tains offshore coral nurseries, in which it cultivates colonies of endangered coral species. Once the corals they propagate have reached a suitable size, the colonies are outplanted onto the degraded reefs along the Florida Reef tract – the third largest barrier reef system in the world. The foundation has planted nearly 70,000 corals out onto Florida’s reefs so far.

On Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9, hundreds of divers and non-divers alike can join Coral Restoration Foundation volunteers, interns and staff for a day of saving coral reefs. Last year during Coralpalooza, 262 divers took part throughout Florida and the Caribbean, outplanting more than

MUIR JOINS HISTORY & DISCOVERY CENTER

E

rin Muir, a sixth-generation Conch from Tavernier, has joined the staff of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation as membership coordinator for Keys History & Discovery Center. In her new role, Muir is responsible for membership recruitment and retention, member communications, and member programs and services.

“In four short years, Keys History & Discovery Center has grown in its offerings and in membership.

With the addition of Erin we will increase focus on the needs of our growing membership,” said Foundation Executive Director Jill Miranda Baker. “We are thrilled she is taking her passion for her extensive local family history and sharing it with the community.”

Muir is a founding co-chair of Flagler’s Folly Society (FFS), a member organization of the Foundation, formed in 2015 to promote the mission to preserve and share the history of the Upper Keys. The membership is geared toward young professionals and those interested in a part philanthropic/part social member organization.

A graduate of Coral Shores High School, Muir most recently served as legislative aide to State Rep. Holly Raschein and previously for Raschein’s re-election campaign. Prior to returning home to Tavernier, Muir worked in the not-for-profit field. In addition to the FFS, she is the chair of the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, founding board member of Elite Dance of the Keys, a trustee of the Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys, and a member of the Mariners Hospital Young Philanthropists of Baptist Health. She also is a graduate of Leadership Monroe, Class XXIII. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the Honors College at the University of Florida, where she then earned a master’s degree in public affairs in 2009. She lives in Tavernier with husband Sam Muir, a nuclear engineer at Turkey Point, and their daughter Violet.

FEDER, MATEO AND ROJAS TO PLAY JUNE 15-17

hree accomplished Keys guitarists – each with a unique style of play – will join together for the second Florida Keys Guitar Summit, to showcase their skills individually and in duos and trios.

Contemporary guitarist David Feder, classical guitarist Mateo, and Latin guitarist Rolando Rojas will perform on Friday, June 15 at the Islamorada Community Church, 83250 Overseas Highway; on Saturday, June 16 at the Marathon Community Theater, 5101 Overseas Highway; and on Sunday, June 17 at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton Street.

All concerts begin at 8 p.m.

Jimmy Buffett called Feder a “Florida treasure” at a recent performance in the Keys. National Public Radio said Feder “has a magic way of making you feel like an old friend with songs that are original and intimate.”

Classical guitarist Mateo is a composer and soloist who has performed with the Yehudi Menuhin Concerts and has been a Florida Artist-in-Residence. He produces and performs in concerts all over the Keys.

Rojas has played with musicians such as Gloria Estefan. Graduating from the Izidor Handler Conservatory of Music in Vina Del Mar, Chile, Rojas is a multifaceted instrumentalist who composes and performs in many genres.

JAZZY NIGHT Fine arts gallery features talented ensemble

slamorada is already known for its art scene, but could jazz be the next big thing? It sure sounded like it on June 1, when the Roberto Russell Galleries hosted its first ever jazz night.

The gallery’s already whimsical Everglades Room echoed the lively rapping of Skipper Kripitz’s drum set and jazz harpist Scott Marischen’s plucking. Debbie Spring took leadwork duty with her viola while Rusty Heck provided a crunchy standing-bass line. The four musicians performed a range of fun hits including songs like the James Bond theme song.
