A

week into the 2018 hurricane season, a little more than half of the original households living in temporary travel trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency remain.

As of Wednesday, there are 127 occupied FEMA trailers Keys-wide left out of 215 households that moved in after Irma tore through the islands.

June 1, the first day of hurricane season, was the goal for FEMA to have the trailers removed, but the actual date remains fluid.

As long as trailer occupants are meeting recertification requirements monthly — showing they’re actively working toward their permanent housing plan — they can stay living in the trailers.

In the event of a hurricane, if a mandatory evacuation is ordered, FEMA trailer occupants must leave and leave the trailer behind.

“Do not remove them,” said FEMA spokesman John Mills.

FEMA is also encouraging families to make an emergency plan and be ready this hurricane season.

Marathon People working on their own homes and living in their own trailers (not FEMA owned) are about to receive a letter from the City of Marathon about permit renewal.

“Most trailers have a six-month permit, so whatever date that started, it’ll be coming to a close soon. You need to extend that permit through this coming hurricane season and we simply want to know where everybody is and whether they still need a permit and if they are in fact making substantial progress,” said City Planning Director George Garrett. “This is just putting people on notice.”

He, too, said if a mandatory evacuation notice is called, people living in trailers must evacuate.

City staff is available to help anyone who may have had a substantial damage assessment on their home. To schedule a meeting or discuss questions regarding the city’s assessment, call 305-743-0033 to make an appointment between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

F

ive years ago, Suzy Curry brought a tub of banana pudding to Sombrero Beach.

She was refueling a group of kayakers on their 160-mile journey, from Miami to Key West, in an effort to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life program.

At the time, Curry, now a breast cancer survivor of seven years, was about to retire from her ownership of Stout’s Restaurant, and she told the Castaways Against Cancer group she wanted to join the cause.

“The first year, I did a leg of the trip, 82 miles,” Curry said. “Last year I did the whole thing and I am going to try again this year, but it’s been a tougher year to train.”

Since 2000, the group has raised $1 million for the ACS, making them one of the top relay teams in the nation. On Saturday, June 9, the team of 17 will launch its 19th annual adventure with the mission of helping to find a cure for cancer and honoring those in their fight. The paddle begins from Virginia Key, next to the Miami Seaquarium, and ends at 2 p.m., June 15, at Smathers Beach in Key West.

Curry is originally from Annapolis, but has lived in the Keys for 46 years.

She and her husband have been together for 42 years and they operated the popular diner in Marathon for 21 of those. During season that meant waking up at 2:30 a.m. to get breakfast going. No wonder she thinks training for a 160-mile kayak trip is a great way to spend her retirement!

What’s the most difficult stretch along the 160-mile trip? For me, camping on Elliot Key the first night with about a billion hungry mosquitoes.

How long have you been training for this? This year, I started training on New Year’s Day. It was beautiful and calm.

Had you ever done a similar trip prior to when you started four years ago? I kayaked once before with a friend.

What’s your favorite thing about kayaking in general? The peacefulness. I have glided over more sea life and had a dolphin pop up 10 feet in front of the kayak.

What’s your nickname? All Castaways have nicknames. I’m Chiquita, since I made them the famous Stout’s Restaurant banana pudding If you were to play a strong female lead from any movie, who would you be? We joke on the Castaway trip about who would play us; the guys say, for me, Sally Field.

Best professional advice? For kayaking: enjoy and train. For life: be happy in whatever you do; we don’t get doovers in life.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? Patrick Swayze.

What is you favorite Keysy thing to do? Watch a beautiful sunset. In my day I was known as “Sunset Sue” down at the old Tarpon Tiki.

What is your advice for women battling breast cancer? Take a deep breath when you get the diagnosis, then get information from all different resources. Breast cancer is very treatable and there are a lot more women out there than we know who fought the battle and are healthy.

urricane season got off to a wet and premature start.

Hopefully Alberto was not a harbinger for the Florida Keys.

Unfortunately, hurricanes have always been part of the deal for those who have chosen to call these islands home — and for those who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

While hurricanes always affect the island chain as a whole, each storm reveals a unique and often specific story.

It was Sept. 9, 1960 when strong winds associated with a storm named Donna began to blow over the Keys. Weather instruments at Sombrero Key Lighthouse recorded 150 mph wind gusts. The eye of the hurricane crossed the Middle Keys in the dark of the early morning hours of Sept. 10, bringing Category 4 winds of a sustained 132 mph and 8-9 feet of tidal surge. When it struck, Donna was considered one of the most destructive hurricanes to strike Florida. Vessels, buildings, and bridges connecting the Overseas Highway to the mainland were destroyed. The U.S. Marines were brought in to patrol the streets and combat looting.

In a related piece of history associated with the Weather Bureau, 1935 was the first year automated weather instruments mounted on buoys began collecting marine weather data. It was also the year the bureau developed a hurricane warning system. Forecasting switched from a centralized Washington office to four distinct tropical hurricane forecasting offices in Boston, Jacksonville, New Orleans, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

None of these advancements had any bearing on the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 when the first hurricane warning issued by the Weather Bureau for the Florida Keys was issued at 3:30 a.m. on the day the storm arrived. “Tropical disturbance still of small diameter but considerable intensity moving slowly westwards off the coast of northcentral Cuba. Entangled manatee brought to shore SARA MATTHIS

he rescue of an entangled manatee started on the morning of June 6. Local resident and business owner Shayne Messina alerted the Dolphin Research Center that the injured animal, spotted over the past few days, was in a perfect spot — a canal in the Coco Plum neighborhood of the Middle Keys.

“There are no cowboys in an operation like this,” said DRC’s Mandy Rodriguez, saying the Manatee Rescue Team from the facility moves slowly.

Indeed, there wasn’t a hurry. A couple of spotters in kayaks and a couple more arranged on the dock in front of AM Electric, kept their eye on the placid manatee.

The team positioned a sled, unraveled a net, and some donned scuba gear. Then the hoses and the lettuce came out.

“This is the only time it’s acceptable to feed manatees, when you’re trying to lure them in for medical attention and only when directed to do so by authorities,” said the DRC’s Mary Stella.

“The one thing about manatees is that they can make a bunch of smart people look silly when you’re trying to catch them. The manatees don’t understand it’s our intention to help.

They try to evade.”

This particular male manatee is about 800 pounds and 9 feet long, a young adult. Impossible to miss were the yards of monofilament line wrapped around its starboard flipper and a couple of loops on the port side.

The right side lines were cutting deeply. Once on land — under the cover of a tent and with the liberal application of water and ice — the team waited for the veterinarian from Miami Seaquarium, Dr. Maya Rodriguez (no relation to Mandy). The veterinarian has been consulting with the Fish and Wildlife Commission state office located on the west coast of Florida.

She immediately set about disentangling the animal.

“People ask why we just don’t do it ourselves, or why people can’t just jump in the water and cut the line off and set the manatee free again,” said Mandy. “I’ve been doing this for 46 years and what we’ve learned is that once the ‘tourniquet’ comes off the bleeding can begin. We could find the animal dead later. That’s why we take our time, bring it to land, and have a vet on hand.”

The veterinarian made the decision to release the animal the same day. The line was removed, wounds cleaned, antibiotics administered and the animal has been chipped. It was a big day for “Coco,” but it’s over now.

Keys school district to start one-year trial in the fall

n two months, Keys high school students wishing to play sports or be involved in extracurricular activities related to sports will have to consent to being randomly tested for drugs and alcohol.

The program would have gone into effect in fall 2017, but after Hurricane Irma, the Monroe County School Board did not think it feasible to start drug testing mid-year.

The board last month approved the program on a trial basis for one year, starting in August. The drug test does not check for steroids.

Dave Murphy, district director of assessment and accountability, said pending board approval at the Tuesday, June 12 meeting, the drug-testing program will be fine-tuned over the summer for its fall rollout. The exact cost has not been set yet.

Although it’s something he voted for, board Chairman Bobby Highsmith said the program is controversial.

“Our school district would be in the definite minority across the nation of schools implementing these programs,” he said. “However, given the requests coming from principals and athletic directors, people whose opinions I value greatly, I’m willing to try this on a one-year basis and see what effects, if any, this has on curbing teen drug or alcohol use as well as any peripheral effects regarding participation in sports and extracurricular activities.”

According to the district’s Interscholastic Athletics Alcohol and Drug Testing Policy, this is how it’ll go:

1. WHO High school student athletes and those involved in extracurricular activities related to sports, including but not limited to cheerleaders and members of the marching band.

2. HOW Students must consent to drug testing. No consent means no participation. This includes consenting to further random testing at any time “upon reasonable suspicion.” Coaches will submit their rosters, including student names and ID numbers, to athletic directors. Names are assigned a random number for testing by the district from the current rosters and entered into Microsoft Excel’s random generating program.

Names and identities remain unknown until all the selections have been completed, Athletic directors will run the random student selection process.

On a testing day, up to 25 percent of student athletes will be randomly selected for a urine test.

The student is escorted out of the class by staff to the testing area. Coaches, athletic trainers, secretaries, and student aides will not be allowed inside the bathroom with the student. The student is alone when providing the sample.

3. WHAT Students are being tested for the following substances: alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamines, amphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, oxycodone and anti-depressants.

4. RESULTS Initially, there is an on-site screening of the sample. If positive, it’s sealed and sent to a lab. “A limited number of tests will be provided free of charge through our partnership with AHEC (Area Health Education Center Inc.).

The exact costs of the program and number of tests will need to be reevaluated since a year has lapsed since the policy was first approved,” Murphy said. “It is a law enforcement lab that will do the test, but no student name will be attached to a sample that’s sent down.”

Should there be a positive result, the lab will submit the positive drug or alcohol test result to the school’s athletic director, resulting in “appropriate action.”

5. TESTING POSITIVE If a student tests positive for a substance, the discipline is as follows: • First infraction: Suspension from sport for 10 days, but required to attend and be sidelined at practice. After five school days, student can participate in practice.

No playing at scheduled games until providing documentation of a free three-hour state-licensed and accredited drug/alcohol counseling or rehab/ education program.

• Second time: Student suspended from sport for 30 days. Practice allowed, observed from sidelines, and participation in practice allowed after 20 days. Three-hour drug/alcohol course required, along with subsequent school-based drug tests.

• Third time: Student is suspended from sports for the rest of the school year.

Florida Keys employers still test for cannabis; some Keys doctors can prescribe

s employers across the nation take a more lax approach to testing potential employees for marijuana, it’s still considered a no-no in the Florida Keys.

From coast to coast, eight states and the District of Columbia allow recreational marijuana use, while Florida is in a group of 29 states allowing use of medical marijuana.

That does not change the fact that several of Monroe County’s largest employers still test for a wide array of drugs, including pot.

Of the private-sector employers the Keys Weekly called, none exempted marijuana from the banned substances.

All of Ocean Reef Country Club’s 1,100 in-season employees must pass a broad-spectrum drug test to work at the largest private-sector employer in the Keys.

“We have everything from bartenders, food and beverage servers to engineers, those in the accounting departments, tennis pros … everything you would imagine at a private country club,” said Molly Carroll, director of communications.

Medical marijuana In Florida, 71 percent of voters in the 2016 general election supported the availability of medical.

That was far more than the 60 percent needed to pass state constitutional Amendment 2, allowing pot as treatment for patients with specific diseases.

But the details were hazy and it took a while for the state to decide how people with those diseases should be able to consume the prescribed pot.

What comes out of a dispensary is not the leafy green associated with the word “marijuana,” and the state has yet to approve the (smoke-able) THC flower as a delivery method.

Patients with cancer, epilepsy, chronic seizures and muscle spasms qualify for low-THC cannabis, sometimes prescribed in liquid form delivered under the tongue with a dropper.

A patient whose condition is imminently terminal can qualify for full-potency medical marijuana with certification from two physicians.

Because each dispensary has different plants, it’s like testing different brands of cola, said Key West physician Dr. John Norris.

“They all taste different,” he said.

“Dosing this is a nightmare. It all depends on what you’re getting, and because they’re all different, it’s not like I’m prescribing a specific dose.”

Still, the message from patients and organizations to the state is that people have the right to smoke it, he said.

“We’re actually not concerned about whole flower getting approved because our goal is to help the patients take the medicine easily and effectively,” said Tracy Timura, regional director of IONA Cannabis Clinic of the Florida Keys.

IONA just had its grand opening in Islamorada and has more than 100 patients.

Living on a boat in Marathon was a dream come true for Webb Dillard and his wife Brandi, until Hurricane Irma’s wind swept it out of the Boot Key Harbor marina and sank it near the Seven Mile Bridge.

It stayed there for 40 days, Webb said.

“The way the storm was coming in, we didn’t want it to be bashing up against the sea wall, so we moved it and were kind of like, we know we have a high percentage of losing our boat because of this storm,” Webb said.

And they did, but within 10 days of returning to the Keys, the couple found a property on Man-O-War Drive to buy.

“Irma did us a solid,” Webb said.

The sale closed May 18. With their daughter, Emmy, they lived in a hotel for a month, then bought a travel trailer and have been living in it near their new home while Webb does all the renovations.

In the living room, they plan to hang the sailboat wheel as a reminder of their dream and how it transformed faster than planned.

While most families had one residence to worry about, Kaite Landry and Austin Follos have been taking care of multiple properties and a 16-room motel since Hurricane Irma.

For Landry and her big family, Irma gave them a chance to see what Follos was made of. Follos had quit his fulltime job a month before the storm and moved to Marathon with Landry to get their photography business, Folland Photography, up and running. Having Austin by her side was a godsend, she said.

He helped ready two homes on 86th Street belonging to Landry’s parents and grandmother, the Ranch House Motel, also belonging to her grandmother, and two other oceanside homes in the family.

Unfortunately, storm surge affected all properties and destroyed Austin’s car, a bobcat and a boat. The home Landry grew up in was also destroyed, and has since been gutted.

She, her parents and Austin lived in a tent for two weeks before a travel trailer was donated by Kirk of the Keys Church.

The family is living in it on 86th Street until the homes are completely remodeled.

At that point the couple will move into an apartment at the motel. Now, when their day’s work is done on the houses, they shoot photos in the evening.

“Our photography business is full steam ahead,” Landry said. “The hurricane did a lot of good. It brought our family so much closer together.”

“We definitely have come a long way and have so many more plans,” Follos said.

Derek Hamm says he lucked out after Irma in a big way.

The boat bottom cleaner said he returned to Marathon’s Boot Key Harbor City Marina after the storm to find his Morgan 300 Classic sailboat from the ’70s “torn all the way from the bowsprit to the cockpit.”

“When I found my boat it was in the mangroves with two boats on top of it,” Hamm said. That’s why he and girlfriend Tiffany Kidwell bought the boats that Hamm says “got into a fight with his sailboat and won.”

Hers is a Morgan 33 Out Island and his is a Trident Warrior 35.

Kidwell lost most of the possessions in her Big Pine Key apartment during the storm, so it made sense to buy one of the boats. Now, they live side by side in the marina. He works for Obsessive Compulsive Divers and she is a barista/art supervisor at The Art Studio. They were not able to move onto the boats until January, and until then, lived in a travel trailer at St. Columba Episcopal Church.

“I had a relatively positive experience considering I lost my boat and got a new one. It served me well, and I think I got my value out of it considering the circumstances,” Hamm said.

Kidwell said she believes everything happens for a reason.

“I think this was a great example of that phenomenon and I’m very grateful,” she said.

“There is something to satisfy everyone,” Matt said.

Sparky’s moved to its new spot after Hurricane Irma destroyed the former restaurant on Sadowski Causeway, where it had been since 2006.

“I’m looking forward to working with the hotel in the future, but right now the first year is us just getting it all together,” Matt said.

Sparky’s is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily with happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m.

o kill or not to kill: it’s the toughest decision the Florida Keys Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (FKSPCA) has to make. The two shelters in Marathon and Key West admit about 2,000 animals a year and, unfortunately, not every one can be saved.

Some animals have to be put down because of untreatable illness, aggression or a feral beginning — they are not safe to be readopted into the community.

“We look for manageable behaviors and the possibility of certain kinds of homes for certain animals,” said Tammy Fox, FKSPCA executive director. “We can’t put the community at risk or keep them forever in a cage; it’s inhumane.”

The decision to terminate an animal’s life is a complex and arduous task, one that the FKSPCA is completely transparent about. There is the assumption that the agency is a “kill-free shelter,” which the FKSPCA dispels on its website. Kill-free shelters are often limited admission, meaning they only accept animals with a better chance of adoptability, thus spiking their success rate. The FKSPCA is open admission, meaning they take all animals no matter what physical or mental condition. But with that comes the responsibility and hard choices of what is the most humane outcome for an animal that is not treatable.

The benchmark for a kill-free shelter, according to Best Friends Animal Society, is a roughly 90 percent live release rate. FKSPCA records indicate they mostly achieve this standard. For example, in March of 2018 the FKSPCA successfully rehabilitated 88 percent of the animals and 87 percent in April.

“We cannot guarantee the animal can be rehabilitated and it is our responsibility not to place animals in homes without reasonable assurance everyone is safe,” said Jeff Johnson, FKSPCA president-elect. “We have to work with all animals; no matter how big the problem or tough the solution, we can’t ignore it.”

The FKSPCA uses a national database called Pet Point which compiles euthanasia statistics, and those numbers are then sent to Monroe County, which oversees the agency’s contract and animal control in general. According to shelter records from February 2016 to February 2018, there were 844 animals euthanized. Using Pet Point’s classifications, many of those euthanizations are grouped under the vague “policy decision” category and include such animals as iguanas, rats, raccoons, bufo toads — essentially invasive animals. Of the 844, more than 300 animals were euthanized for medical reasons, 171 were requested by owners and about 50 were for irreversible behavioral disorders.

“We make every attempt to help an animal, we look at the history of their behaviors and keep them at the shelter to evaluate and observe. On the records it shows when we took the animal in to when we decided to euthanize and that it can be quite a long time,”

said Fox. It should be noted the shelter spent over $100,000 in animal medical expenses last year treating illnesses in order to make every effort at rehabilitation.

Shelter officials said it is a group decision to euthanize. Any staff member who has come in contact with the animal is a part of the agreement and veterinarians are involved for medical decisions. “It’s never one person making the decision,” said Fox. By far, cats create the most consistent challenge for the shelter. The Keys have many outdoor, freeroaming cat communities located near homes and businesses. Many of these are feral cats which often breed and create cat communities and should not be confused with furry, purry Mr. Skittles next door.

“Some cats are just truly wild, aggressive and antisocial. Some business owners and residents consider these cats to be invasive and destructive,” said Fox. The rehabilitation success rate is low and just putting them in a room at the shelter can cause mental, emotional and physical stress leading to suffering, not to mention fighting among the cats, according to Matt Royer, the Key West shelter’s director of operations.

Fox and Royer, both experienced in animal training and welfare, maintain it’s difficult to domesticate a feral cat and, again, it would go against the responsibility of the shelter to have potentially dangerous animals up for adoption. Another misconception of the statistics is kitten euthanasia, said Fox, which most likely occurs due to fading kitten syndrome, in which young cats simply have no medical chance.

“We encourage trap, neuter and release allowing the cats to live in their colonies without being able to breed,” said Fox. “But we can’t just trap, neuter and release them onto the streets without being under the care of someone managing the colony. And under county ordinance, we can’t release them without property owner consent.” However, they will adopt a feral cat or community cats to an individual expressing interest in having a “working” cat on their property, as was the case recently at a local restaurant wishing to have working cats to keep pests at bay.

While there were more than 100 feral cats euthanized over two years, on any given day the shelters in Key West and Marathon also have about 100 cats to be adopted.

“I became a euthanasia technician to know that it’s being done with compassion,” said Royer. “It’s the hardest decision to make but we have to make it. It’s a service for the community as a whole and for the animal.”

For further transparency, the FKSPCA has joined the national database shelteranimals.org. which will have the next publish date in October of all data reports, or log in for monthly reports.

Contemporary guitarist David Feder, classical guitarist Mateo, and Latin guitarist Rolando Rojas will perform on Friday, June 15 at the Islamorada Community Church, 83250 Overseas Highway; on Saturday, June 16 at the Marathon Community Theater, 5101 Overseas Highway; and on Sunday, June 17 at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton Street.

All concerts begin at 8 p.m.

Jimmy Buffett called Feder a “Florida treasure” at a recent performance in the Keys. National Public Radio said Feder “has a magic way of making you feel like an old friend with songs that are original and intimate.”

Classical guitarist Mateo is a composer and soloist who has performed with the Yehudi Menuhin Concerts and has been a Florida Artist-in-Residence. He produces and performs in concerts all over the Keys.

Rojas has played with musicians such as Gloria Estefan.

Graduating from the Izidor Handler Conservatory of Music in Vina Del Mar, Chile, Rojas is a multifaceted

instrumentalist who composes and performs in many genres.

O

Underdogs in Super Bowl LII, the Eagles came in to Minnesota and took the championship away from the New England Patriots. The city held a huge victory party, and Eagles fans have been rejoicing throughout the NFL offseason. Proud Eagles fans were making their way to our nation’s capital until…

President Trump uninvited the Philadelphia Eagles to the White House, citing the National Anthem controversy. Here is part of Trump’s announcement: “The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow. They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.

The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better.”

No matter what you think about the kneeling/standing for the Anthem issue, the fact is that not one Philadelphia Eagle knelt during the singing of the Anthem this past season and postseason. Not one.

That fact didn’t stop Fox News from airing images showing Eagles players kneeling in prayer, to emphasize the president’s announcement.

Eagles players Zach Ertz and Chris Long disputed the way Fox used the praying images; Fox issued a retraction and apology, explaining that the footage was “unrelated to the segment.”

This controversy has been blown way out of proportion to its actual significance. If an NFL player chooses to kneel in protest during the National Anthem, so what? It doesn’t mean I love my country any less. It has no bearing on how I choose to live my life, celebrate my liberty, and pursue my own happiness.

And the NFL seemingly has the right to enforce rules of conduct on its employees while on the clock. Don’t want to stand for the Anthem? Stay in the locker room. While some see this as a First Amendment issue, the NFL players are essentially contract employees of a franchise operation —

and as such, they are bound by rules of conduct on and off the field. If players want to kneel in protest, I still couldn’t care less.

The NFL may have a different opinion.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s celebrity news on TMZ, keeping up with whichever Kardashian is in the news, or kneeling football players — none of these has much of anything to do with people’s real lives. They may be full of sound and fury, but in the end, they signify nothing.

I love my country. I am proud to be an American. I stand for the National Anthem and I salute my flag. If somebody else feels differently about these symbols, again, so what? The freedoms we have as Americans include the freedom to have a different point of view than I do, as well as a different point of view than the president of the United States.

The president didn’t invent our constitutional freedoms; neither does he have the power to define patriotism for Americans. He can, however, extend (and retract) invitations to White House visits for sports teams.

And that’s why, even as it pains me as a Steelers and Dolphins fan to write, the Philadelphia Eagles are a class act.

It’s not always easy to rise above the trolling and clickbait that masquerade as civil discourse; the Eagles, however, have done just that.

Marathon Middle School explores the human side of American history

ne hundred seventy-one Marathon sixth- and eighth-grade students had an opportunity to explore an often under-addressed topic in American history when they studied the Civil War era in their social studies class this spring. Jan Dorl and Jeanette Maresma, sixth- and eighth-grade social studies teachers, respectively, took the opportunity to guide their students through the complicated topics related to slavery and freedom as part of a U.S. history research project.

The curriculum involved multiple formats to engage students and accommodate different interests, age groups, and learning styles. After initial classroom instruction and background information, the students watched films geared toward their grade level to gain an up-close look at the lives and experiences of the enslaved persons. Eighth graders watched the educational version of the film “12 Years a Slave” based on the life of Solomon Northrup, a free black man who was kidnapped into slavery. Sixth graders viewed “Race to Freedom,” a story of the perils of escape and the role of the Underground Railroad as a path to freedom. The final project involved student groups working together on research and reporting combined with instruction in graphic design and software to produce chapters for a student-created booklet related to the unit.

Supplementary enrichment opportunities brought elements of realism to the students. Rev. Larry White, minister at Marathon’s St. Paul AME Church, spoke of his experiences as a youth under Jim Crow laws in South Carolina and also advised the student audience on how to deal with hurtful comments and other questions that arose after the films. Civil War artifact collector Pat Baragwanath treated the students to a display of Civil War swords and an original of “The Union is Dissolved” broadside, the first Confederate publication as it went to press 15 minutes after the secession ordinance was passed in South Carolina, the first state to secede. The capstone activity was a live, on-stage presentation of “Civil War Plays,” three monologues based on writings of persons who were affected by the Civil War, brought to Marathon Middle School students by Fringe Theater Key West. Marathon High graduate Javier Reyes (and Keys Weekly art director) was chosen as the graphic designer to provide instruction to the students through the Council’s Artists in Schools grant program.

“Individual students mentioned particular aspects of the unit that they enjoyed and also indicated an understanding of social consciousness about this tragic part of American history,” Maresma said. “They know that even though most Americans did not own slaves, slavery was the primary experience of millions of Americans. The students learned about the human side of slavery, that it’s a reality that can be talked about, and how to address issues with respect for each other.”

One eighth grader summarized his experience well when he wrote, “(The booklet project) was a lot of fun and we all learned a little something about our past.”

During Kimberly Gregory’s Hurricane Irma experience, the Marathon resident and Fishermen’s Community Hospital manager posted often about evacuation, then about returning to her destroyed home and workplace.

Every step of the way, Kelli Thornton-Miller’s eighth graders were watching at Fowlerville Junior High in Michigan.

“I just wanted them to know that even though it wasn’t hitting them here, I wanted them to realize it was happening to us in the United States,” Thornton-Miller said.

From 1,500 miles away, the Fowlerville students started brainstorming.

dimes as possible, the students sent a collective check for $250, along with letters of support, to Baptist Health South Florida, which bought the hospital shortly before the storm.

“Thank you. I’m sorry,” one student wrote. “We are all thinking about you,” wrote another.

On June 5, via Skype, the students went on a tour of the temporary field hospital on the Fishermen’s property, guided by Gregory. The field hospital will be removed July 12. It’s being replaced with a 6,000-square-foot modular hospital nearby that’ll open immediately. It’s already going up and will stay there for about two years, Gregory said. In the meantime, the new 40,000-square-foot hospital will start going up.

Gregory thanked the students Tuesday and said she was grateful for the check.

“It wasn’t about the money, although every penny counts,” she told the Weekly. “It was the thought they put into this.”

The Fowlerville students aren’t the only ones sending checks.

“We recently received an $800 check from Ohio where people had hosted a dinner, then one from Virginia,” Gregory said.

GOOD NEWS THE REEF VS. IRMA

“Y

ou probably have heard enough about hurricanes,” but on Monday, Mote Marine’s Dr. David Vaughn told the volunteers of Save-a-Turtle what is happening underwater. “You can’t see it from the side of the road,” he said.

The visibility was horrendous for weeks after the storm, making it difficult even to survey the damage. Hurricane Irma’s wake left the waters surrounding the Keys a milky white, which between the cloudy water and the sediment that sandblasted the reef, left serious damage.

ON THE REEF Three things played a role in the health of local corals during Hurricane Irma — the distance from the eye of the storm, the distance from the outer edge of the reef, and the size of the coral.

In the transplant areas, like American Shoal, before and after pictures were compared. The before picture: a group of five corals with an aluminum tag for each cluster being held to the hard bottom by a cast iron nail. Around the thriving area, sea fans swayed in the currents and algae had started to grow on the sea floor.

After the storm, the nails were the only thing left.

“The distance from the storm made a big difference,” said Vaughn, who pointed out that many of the coral transplant areas were in Irma’s direct path.

What also made a big difference was whether the plantings were on the outer barrier reef versus the inshore reefs.

“Life in the Florida Keys would not be possible without the reef,” he said, explaining how the outer reef broke up the 30-foot waves, the inner reefs broke up the 15-foot waves, and the houses along the shoreline took the surge and 8-foot waves. “There is not one house on these islands that could take 30-foot waves.”

Off Cook Island, the massive corals did fine, although they are still wrapped in a lot of debris, lines and traps.

Moving further away from the eye, on Sand Key off Key West were two-year post plantings that held better than the American Shoal plantings. The 25-mile difference still wiped the algae off the corals, but the main parts of the tissue were intact. “The good news is we can put them back,” he said. “This shows us one thing: size matters, not age.”

Of the 12,000 corals planted on the snorkel trail off Ft. Zachary Taylor, only one was missing from the storm.

Sherri Crilly, vice president of Save-a-Turtle, said of Looe Key, “it looked better three weeks after the storm than it does now; every time I go out there it looks worse.” Mote planted 5,000 corals inside the special protected area.

Vaughn explained how the sediment is smothering the corals out there, but slowly the reef will come back to all of its glory. “The soft corals are already coming back,” said Crilly. “And the sea life – including the goliath groupers – are already thriving again.”

Of the 105 coral trees planted around Looe Key — each with 120 corals dangling from it — only five survived Hurricane Irma. One tree was found off Cape Coral, Florida. Vaughn said the coral count should be back up to 7,000 this summer.

INSIDE THE LAB Hurricane Hugo destroyed eight years of oyster research in North Carolina and Dr. Michael Crosby at Mote Marine said if he ever had the chance to build something that could withstand a Category 5 storm, he would. Mote Marine christened the new building last year, just in time. More than 14,000 corals moved inside to the wet labs were saved and it’s a good thing, since the direct hit of Irma brought 4.5 feet of storm surge and high winds. “We were able to save 85 percent of the outside nursery corals,” said Vaughn.

During the storm, Vaughn and other employees who stayed behind were throwing outside corals into the empty shark tanks to try and save them. It worked. Since the storm, the 38 tanks, known as raceways, have been rebuilt.

THERE IS HOPE Hurricane Wilma in 2005 completely wiped out Cancun’s reef by Isla Mujeres, when Vaughn was sent to help with fragmentation. Last month, he was invited back, not to help with more fragmentation, but to see what he had rebuilt.

Starting with tops of Coke bottles cut in half with the coral cemented in the top of it, today the rebuilt reef is flourishing with fish, hard corals and natural soft corals. “This is what we will expect three to five years from now,” he said regarding local reefs.

A number of countries around the world are learning how to do this. “We can’t afford to lose the coral habitat,” he said. “It won’t matter 100 years from now if all the species are gone if we rebuild the reefs; we have to save the habitat now.”

In the Keys, the reef supports 70,000 jobs and $1 billion in local industries.

“We learned about bleaching in the ’70s,” said Vaughn. “We thought that was a once-in-acentury event and lost about 20 percent of corals.” Then, in the ’80s, there were back-to-back years of bleaching, where 5 to 10 percent of the corals were lost.

“We have had bleaching 12 out of the last 18 years,” he said. “There is some natural resistance out there; we lost the susceptible ones.”

Mote has been working with multiple genotypes that show natural resiliency. “We want our corals to win the Summer Olympics in 2050,” he said. “But, right now, it’s a Band-Aid, it’s not solving the underlying problem that is causing the bleaching.”

Twenty years ago, a good reef was considered to be at 50 percent coverage; today the average is around 6 to 7 percent.

Mote Marine on Summerland Key offers tours on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. and on Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m.
