(Mom) was granted her angel wings on April 30th, 2018. Mom left us too soon. But those who were touched by her understood that the quality of her existence far exceeds the quality of time in which one lives. Mom gave us all such courage and hope, and reminded us of the preciousness of life. The last few months of her life she gave us the gift for all her children to be together to help her. Mom loved to dance and we have a wonderful video of her dancing just 2 months ago after enjoying a lobster dinner. Mom could kick it out! A full month and a half with zero stress - laughing and having fun. She would spend a lot of time rocking in her favorite chair while making daily phone calls to her children just to talk about life. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Mom. She taught us how to be strong throughout life. She taught us how to have fun. She taught us how to guard against evil. She taught us how to make pasta from scratch and the best spaghetti sauce around. Mom taught us how to iron a collared shirt. She taught us all of life’s lessons. The most important thing she taught us was how to live.

We love you Mom, and know you are kicking it out again and dancing in Heaven with your beloved son Billy, and your husband Daniel.

t’s been a quiet plan in the works for months and will eventually help at least 18 Middle Keys households in need.

Rev. Canon Debra Maconaughey of St. Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon was at the May 22 City Council meeting to accept 18 affordable housing allocations from the city through Monroe County for a project in the works since before Hurricane Irma.

Project coordinators have applied to Monroe County for the building allocations, or rights.

It will house those in need at a “doable” monthly rate, she said.

“We understand there is a need for housing for people that live here,” Maconaughey said.

“The County Commission has been saying they have all these additional affordable housing units no one requests,” said Mayor

Michelle Coldiron after congratulating Maconaughey at the meeting. Coldiron recused herself from the City Council vote to approve the units because her daughter Mallory Morton is the Realtor who sold the property to the church.

“I’m looking forward to going with you and standing shoulder to shoulder with you at the county,” she said to Maconaughey.

As for the property, it has a small retail space and 18 units, which haven’t been lived in for more than two years, said Remax All Keys Realtor Morton.

“The seller and I are both very happy to be working with St. Columba on this project, as their end goal to provide affordable housing to our workforce is what needed to happen with that property,” she said.

Monthly rent amounts will be calculated based on income, Maconaughey said.

“It’s a hybrid type of program, so it’s a rental but it’s also a co-op,” she said. “We know from people in our parish and community that people are really struggling, and we want to help.”

St. Columba has already been helping people with their housing situations since Irma. It wasn’t the storm that set the apartment building purchase in motion, but a combination

of events from before and after.

In September, the church bought 22 RV trailers and put 10 of them on the church property. The other 12 were stationed from Islamorada to Key West.

More than 200 people have transitioned in and out of the trailers for a few months at a time while finding other arrangements.

In other news: Council made the final approval of a housing project spearheaded by Anchor Inn owner Josh Mothner. He is going to build four affordable housing units on the hotel property at MM 51 oceanside.

here have been many versions of the Overseas Highway. When it opened to public use in 1928, the original path followed the Card Sound route. The 18-Mile Stretch section, as well the Jewfish Creek Bridge, were not incorporated into the highway system until the third version of the highway was celebrated in 1944. When the Jewfish Creek Bridge was first constructed as a conduit for Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad it had a 100-foot swing bridge. When a boat needed to pass, the bridge tender was able to take a crank and turn it, turn it, turn it until the bridge began to swing open.

Some 62 miles down the road, the modern Seven Mile Bridge became incorporated into the Overseas Highway when it opened to traffic in 1982. For the record, at 35,862 feet in length the bridge is 1,098 feet short of seven miles.

The original Seven Mile Bridge was technically four bridges made up of the Knights Key Bridge (6,803 feet), Pigeon Key Bridge (5,935 feet), Moser Channel Bridge (13,947 feet), and the Pacet Channel Viaduct (9,035 feet).

The first three, Knights Key, Pigeon Key and Moser Channel sections were built using concrete piers reinforced with ¾ inch steel rods. Steel girders, 80 feet long and weighing 41.5 tons, were lowered across the piers to create the foundation to which the railroad tracks were later attached. The fourth section, the Pacet Channel Viaduct, utilized a series of arches to support the tracks. Like the Jewfish Creek Bridge, a swing bridge was built into the Moser Channel section to allow

for boat traffic using the shipping channel.

For railroad workers who had completed construction of the Seven Mile Bridge, the 5,055 feet separating Bahia Honda Key from Spanish Harbor Key must have looked like a short and manageable expanse. Though the end result is probably the most iconic of the bridges and certainly the most picturesque, the Bahia Honda Bridge was one of the most difficult to construct — largely because of the dangerously strong currents ripping through the pass during tidal changes. As a result, work days on the bridge piers were cut to two 45-minute shifts during slack tide, the short time between the high and low tides when the water becomes still.

When the railroad was still operating, passengers were told to keep their hands and heads inside the train as it rambled and roared through the camel-trestle bridge 25 feet above the water.

After the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane ended the run of Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad, many of the railroad bridges were refitted to accommodate automobile traffic.

When the second version of the highway opened to traffic in 1938, the road passed through what is today Bahia Honda State Park and up and over the top of the bridge, 65 feet over the clear, colorful water. Stories passed along from those days say the bridge was so narrow that when two buses happened to pass, their side-view mirrors would smash into each other.

he water that flows out of a kitchen sink in Key West has traveled a four-day, 130-mile journey over 43 bridges to get there.

It comes from the Biscayne Aquifer in Florida City.

“You could actually drink it coming right out of the ground,” said Julie Cheon, public information officer for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority.

But the wellfield where Monroe County’s water originates faces a threat from the nearby Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station in Homestead.

Turkey Point, owned by Florida Power and Light, uses a 6,000acre canal system to cool its nuclear reactors. The water, which has excessive amounts of salt, has been leaching out into the Biscayne Aquifer and is approaching the wellfield, Cheon said.

To prevent it from getting there, FPL has installed extraction wells to remove the coolant water and pump it about 3,000 feet below ground on Turkey Point property.

It will take some time to see if that actually works and retracts the saline plume that continues to spread. It could reach Monroe’s wellfield within a year or so at the current rate.

“FPL has agreed to install these wells to capture the hypersaline solution and draw it back to their property, but there is ongoing water quality monitoring and they’re required to do a continued mapping of the saline plume,” said Lee Hefty, director of Miami-Dade County’s Division of Environmental Resources Management.

The extraction wells were installed about two weeks ago, and he gave a presentation last week to the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority.

“In roughly a year, we’ll be able to take a look and see if this model they’ve implemented is working,” Cheon said.

What would happen if the saline plume actually leaked into Monroe County’s drinking water wellfield?

“It would leave our existing wells inoperable,” Cheon said. “We would then be required to either move the wellfield or construct additional reverse osmosis treatment. Either option would require the Aqueduct Authority to incur tremendous capital expenditures.”

Today, May 31, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is holding two public meetings in Homestead to gauge concern about plans at Turkey Point to extend operating licenses for two of its reactors.

The NRC says if those licenses are renewed, which would extend the use of the two reactors through 2053, it will mean Turkey Point has to continue using the cooling canals, which are “failing.”

In a letter to Monroe County and the aqueduct, the NRC said the “current plan for the leaking cooling canal system might not work to stop the pollution emanating from Turkey Point and resolve the hypersaline water that has existed in the canals for decades.”

Cheon said FKAA will have a presentation at the meeting.

“The FKAA is opposed to an extension of the license until there is sufficient evidence that FPL’s actions to halt and retract the hypersaline plume are working,” she said.

Today’s public hearings start at 1 and 5 p.m. with hour-long open houses prior to the start of meetings. They’ll be at Homestead City Hall, 100 Civic Court, Homestead.

NEW BUILDING The FKAA’s Key West administration building at 1100 Kennedy Drive sustained serious damage during Hurricane Irma.

It has been deemed unsafe for the long term by engineers.

“We are going to shore up the portions of the building with the most damage so they are safe and that’ll get us through until we build a new building,” Cheon said.

The new building will go on the same property and the old building will be demolished and possibly replaced with a parking garage.

“We’re making some contingency plans and hoping like heck we don’t have to use them,” Cheon said, referring to future hurricane possibilities.

Should another storm head for the Keys, all staff working in the Key West building will have to evacuate to other FKAA offices in the Keys, which is a fairly simple solution, she said.

“But there is no long-term option to stay in this building. It’s a safety issue,” she said. There is no timeline for construction of the new building.

LEAD NEGOTIATOR Jay Hershoff is the Johnny Appleseed of Florida Keys hospitals

J

ay Hershoff is a negotiator. As the founding partner of Hershoff, Lupino and Yagel, his job is to negotiate family disputes and the culpability of those accused of a crime.

Some 25 years ago he negotiated a $22 million deal with Baptist Health of South Florida to construct a Mariners Hospital and just last summer inked his signature on a document that essentially saved Fishermen’s Hospital.

As a director for First State Bank he has a front row seat to some of the biggest business deals in the Keys and he even successfully negotiated a hostage situation when his ex-wife took the keys to his ‘76 Porsche 911s, Targa.

A son of a plumber who graduated 12th out of 13 from Villanova’s school of economics, Hershoff was seduced by South Florida and earned his law degree from the University of Miami before embarking on a legal career that has spanned nearly five decades and taken him halfway around the world.

How does a recent college graduate from Baltimore with only $17 in his pocket end up in South Florida? In the middle of my senior year (’64), on Christmas vacation, two guys from school and myself drove to Miami in a Volkswagen. When I went back ten days later I had been to the Fontainebleau to see a show.

I can’t remember who it was, maybe it was Frank Sinatra. I had been deep sea fishing. I had been to Jai Alai. I had been water skiing. I had been out to dinner. I had been to the dog track and when I got back to Philadelphia I had $50 in my pocket.

How did you explain this to your father – a plumber struggling with his business? So I said to my father, ‘That is the promised land. I am going to Miami and I am going to try and get into law school in Miami. If I can go down there, knowing nothing, and have the time of my life with no money and come back with more than what I started with, that is the place for me.’ He said, ‘What are you going to do if you don’t get into law school?’ I told him, ‘I am going anyway.’

What was Miami like for a young lawyer back in the late ’60s, early ’70s? I was pretty naïve back then.

I thought Miami was the promised land – and it was. It was great. And it was crazy in those days. I would get called out in the middle of the night when the Sheriff’s Office went on a raid – especially for Bolita – Cuban numbers. We had clients that were involved in it. The guy I worked for was on the payroll for the CIA so whenever any of their informants got in trouble they would call him and he would represent them. There was always somebody in trouble.

The government had the biggest scums on the planet working for them.

Any crazy stories that you can share with us? I had a friend murdered by the cartel in his law office one morning. Turns out they were after his partner and it was a mix-up. I had other friends from law school who went to prison for 15 years. All the judges were involved that I worked in front of. They were fixing trials and taking money. It was horrible.

How did you manage to avoid all that? I didn’t get involved!

What prompted you to establish an office in the Florida Keys? I had been coming down on weekends throughout the ’80s. People would show up at my house with bags of cash. Everybody was paranoid. Everyone was smuggling and everyone was in trouble. Except everyone I represented somehow got off. My wife didn’t want bags of money coming to the house, so I met with a part-time lawyer named Barry Segel back on Hood Ave. I said, ‘Barry, I don’t want to go back. Can I rent your office on Monday?’

One of the first deals you negotiated for Mariners almost doomed the hospital when it became apparent the developer wasn’t able to perform or meet the construction budget and a lawsuit was filed. How did you bring the hospital out of it? We were in the middle of the board meeting when the Baptist board chairman Bob Cole called. On the phone I said to him, ‘I am in a lawsuit and I am in charge of the community’s money. I

want to know: if I settle this lawsuit are you gonna build our hospital?’

He said, ‘Mr. Hershoff, you are a lawyer and know I cannot give you that assurance. You are just going to have to figure this out and get it resolved.’ ‘Mr. Cole,’ I said. ‘If I were one of your sons and I came and asked you, what would you tell me?’

‘Mr. Hershoff, it would depend which one of my sons asked,’ said Cole. Everyone cracked up and laughed and I said ‘Mr. Cole, thank you. You have just given me my answer.’ I settled the lawsuit over lunch at Ocean Reef and then Baptist built us a hospital for $22 million. I also convinced them to put the Tassel Building up before the development agreement expired.

The last 24 months have been a very busy time for you, leading the negotiations for Baptist to acquire Fishermen’s Hospital. Any ‘proud papa’ moments? I found out they didn’t have enough money to make payroll on a Friday. I got Baptist to give Fishermen’s a $3 million line of credit to make sure the doors stayed open. They had never done that without going through a whole process with analysis and committee. We got that done in a week and a half to keep the doors open right before we assumed ownership.

Why are you so passionate about the hospital? My life changed by living here. I have had a good life here. Honestly I didn’t do much in terms of civic stuff before I got here and got involved with the hospital.

Now it’s a passion to make sure I do something to help other people. I have really been fortunate. I appreciate it and I enjoy it. continued on page 31

nce again, Marathon’s Suzy Curry will be joining the Castaways as they paddle from Miami to Key West. Now in its 19th year, the Castaways team has raised almost $1 million to support cancer research. Yes, $1 million. At presstime, they are short only about $10,000 from the goal.

Oh, and they’ve added up the miles, and it’s almost 3,000. “That means we’ve paddled the same distance as across the U.S.,” said team leader Patrick Linfors. The idea for the paddle was conceived by Steve O’Brien, who sought to “light a candle rather than curse the darkness,” after losing, in quick succession, his mother and grandmother to cancer.

The team — 17 people strong — takes off on Friday, June 9 from Miami and arrives in Key West on Friday, June 15 with stops along the way like Grassy Key and Bahia Honda. Actress In St. Petersburg, Ariana Patterson will have the opportunity not only to study biology, but also to broaden her knowledge of stagecraft.

“I think I can possibly weave in some singing lessons, or dancing lessons if they are available at my college,” said the senior, headed off to University of South Florida, St. Petersburg campus. “Whatever I do, however, I want to be involved with the community theater — variety show or directing, things like that.”

Patterson has been a key player in Marathon High School’s drama club.

She directed a one-act show this year, and has choreographed all the musical numbers of the past two years.

Her favorite moment of all, she said, was when the curtain went up on “Legally Blonde” earlier this year. It was a great moment, years in the making, for the senior who had the lead role as Elle Woods.

“There was a lot of hard work that went before that, but it was just a good moment,” Patterson said.

Her silliest role was as Sally Brown in “You’re a good man, Charlie Brown.”

“It was a nice counterpart to all the darker characters I played in the musicals,” she said.

Landon Bish

Artist Landon Bish moved to Marathon from upstate New York with his family three years ago. In the fall, he will be headed to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida.

“I want to learn about rocketry and computer systems,” said Bish. “My goal is to work with SpaceX or NASA.” It’s been a long held dream, he said. So, it’s not surprising his art doesn’t look like anybody else’s. Specifically, Bish creates computer games.

He’s created a couple — he calls them “side scrollers,” like the popular game Mario Kart, or point and click. At this stage he’s more concerned with the functionality of his creative ideas.

“You get them to work first, then you add the layer in the art aspect of it,” he said.

Scholar When Annie Gracy goes to University of Florida this fall, she’ll have plenty of familial support in place. Her older sister, Hannah, will be in her second year of school and Annie will also have her twin sister, Abbie, right by her side.

“Hannah will be in an apartment, and Abbie and I will be living on campus, but not together. Well, the same hall, but with separate roommates.

We’ll be able to stake out our independence a little bit,” Gracy said.

Gracy has the highest GPA at Marathon High School. What is it?

“Oh, I should have memorized this.

I’m not really sure, but it has been going up in the second semester. I think it’s a 4.63, somewhere in that ballpark,” she said.

Wow. With her aptitude at scholarship, Gracy would be welcome in any department, but she said she’s leaning toward the history and English track, maybe political science.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been watching the news with my parents, and recognizing women in politics,” Gracy said. “I think it would be a cool career track.”

Gracy credits her parents with her success in school. Her father is an educator and would often lead impromptu geography or history lessons with his three girls.

“But having Abbie there with me has been the most helpful. If she’s doing her homework, I can’t sit on the couch doing nothing,” Annie said of her sister. “That’s been a huge help.”

In addition to her studies, Gracy has also been a valuable member of the soccer and cross country teams.

Anthony Proudnik

Actor If you’ve met Anthony Proudnik once, you will never forget his voice.

His deep tones make any room vibrate.

That voice landed him his first role on the Marathon High School stage.

“I never auditioned for the role.

But Ms. Cox liked my voice for it,” he said. The part was Egeus in “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” After the acting bug bit in his sophomore year, Proudnik never looked back and has delighted MHS audiences with his comedic talents.

Proudnik is headed to University of Florida to study computer engineering with a minor either in music or electrical engineering.

“I’ve been in band all my life, it seems, playing either the saxophone or tuba. But the idea of music production really interests me,” he said. Four years of higher learning is a certainty, and a graduate degree is a possibility.

“I really enjoyed the drama club.

I liked the social aspect of it. I made a lot of friends that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” Proudnik said. “And the camaraderie on the day of the show is just amazing. Everybody keeps complimenting one another and boosting each other’s heads. I’ve never experienced anything like that before.”

This summer, Proudnik will be traveling to Belarus to visit family, and will also take part in the senior trip to the Bahamas.

Military/First Responder For Marathon High School senior Logan Neller, there are two distinct paths, but they are not that different.

His first choice is to join the Coast Guard. His second is to become a firefighter/EMT. “My grandfather was a medic in Vietnam,” Neller said. “So I always knew that I wanted to serve in some capacity. I like the Coast Guard because it has great benefits, and I get to be in the position to help people. The same is true for becoming an EMT.” Neller is an excellent helmsman, and to see his confidence at the wheel is astounding. “I think I was running the boat by myself since I was about 12 years old,” he said. “It’s one of the perks of living down here; we get to experience all the water has to offer.”

He looks forward to protecting the public’s safety in whatever capacity he can. The rest of the time, well, he’ll be fishing, of course. And melting all the hearts of adults with his respectful “Yes, Ma’ams,” and “No, Sirs” that can fit in one sentence. He is the gentleman of the year, according to an anonymous source.

Volunteer Alex Pabon is headed off to Florida State University with a big service heart. Since her freshman year, she’s been volunteering. Mainly she does work alongside her family, many of whom are members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Although she’s a Conch throughand-through, Alex joined the Class of 2018 as a freshman at Marathon High School after attending private school in the Upper Keys.

“As soon as I started school in Marathon, it made it much easier to do more volunteer work,” she said.

The majority of Pabon’s volunteer work was done alongside the sheriff’s office — doing cleanups and painting over graffiti. But she’s also participated in clothing drives and collecting donations for the women’s shelter in the Keys.

“One year we collected hundreds of pairs of shoes as a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. The shoes were sent to developing countries to be repaired and sold locally, a way to create jobs,” she said.

After Irma, Pabon went straight to work. She coordinated donations from friends outside the Keys to be distributed to needy families in the Keys.

“We filled boxes and backpacks with things like canned foods and school supplies,” she said.

Pabon has racked up more than 300 official volunteer hours, plus many more that are not on the books.

Self-Supporting At the tender age of 18, Milly Cruz has worked more jobs than most adults. She started out at 14 years old as a hostess at Island Fish Co. Soon she added clerking in the Cruz Morato accounting offices. She worked at Sweet Savannah’s for a while at the same time she was a receptionist at Coconut Cay. She recently joined the team at Publix and is up to 40 hours a week.

Over the summer, before she heads off to University of Florida, she will be … you guessed it, working.

“I am trying to save as much money as possible before I go off to school,” she said.

Her plan is to study business and her recent experience at Publix has cemented the decision.

“I want to work for a large corporation. I like the structure,” she said, adding that her dream is to become the CEO of her own business one day.

She is inspired by her father.

“My dad was only 16 years old when I was born, and he is my inspiration. Obstacles have never stopped him from working hard. I get my work ethic from him,” Cruz said.

Cruz was chosen to give the speech on the future at the Class of 2018’s baccalaureate. She quoted author John Greene. “You get a weird feeling when you leave a place, like you’ll not only miss the people that you love, but you’ll miss the person you are at this place in time, because you’ll never be this way again.” She continued in her own words, “But as our senior year ends, you must not forget that there are far better things ahead than any we leave behind. What feels like the end is really just the start of a new beginning.”

Michael Goheen

Entrepreneur This Marathon High School graduate is going to set the world on fire … or at least power it by harnessing the energy of the sun and wind.

“I want to become a renewable resource engineer — solar energy, wind turbines, all that,” Goheen said.

And the best place to do it isn’t that far away — Florida Keys Community College.

“Even if I go somewhere else first, I’ll end up right back here because FKCC has the classes and testing and certifications that I need,” Goheen said.

Goheen said this field of study is an opportunity to “save the world” — he’s only half joking — but also the up-and-coming type of skill, service and product that the country wants and needs.

“It’s going to be really big, and I think the job market will be wide open,” he said.

Although he plans on working for someone else first, he definitely wants to start his own business sometime in the not-too-distant future. “I think I need to earn some money first, and I will probably minor in business at the same time,” he said.

Musician In three short weeks, April Sullivan will be an official student of University of North Florida.

“It’s four days of orientation first, then I start school,” she said. “The plan is to study nursing.”

She said the Jacksonville university, part of the state system, really appealed to her.

“It’s located on a natural preserve, so it’s beautiful. And it’s also a small school, which I like,” she said. It’s possible she joins the athletic band at UNF, giving her the ability to play at basketball games both at home and away.

Sullivan has been playing the flute since the sixth grade. “I have always been able to count on Mr. Rayhill. He’s taught me a lot about music and about growing as a person,” she said.

When Sullivan heads off to school, she said she will miss Marathon’s tight-knit community and seeing all her friends on a regular basis.

Natalie Mendoza

Student Athlete In the four years of high school, Natalie Mendoza played four sports: volleyball and soccer all four years, and weighlifting and tennis for the last two years of high school.

With a grade point average of 4.2, she’s headed off to Florida State University.

“I want to study international affairs with a minor in business management,” Mendoza said. Her ultimate plan is to become a part of an NGO — or non-governmental agency involved in charitable works. “I get to travel, and I get to help people,” Mendoza said.

Balancing sports and academics wasn’t easy. “It was pretty hard. I’m not going to lie,” she said.

Mendoza managed the demands on her time by taking advantage of every extra minute — working ahead whenever there was downtime in class, and staying in the classroom at lunch to do homework.

“Even on the bus home from a game, I would be doing my homework,” she said.

The pressure, though, worked. She learned to use her time wisely. Still, she knows the key to her heart.

“Soccer. I love soccer,” she said.

Artist She will spend two years at Valencia Community College before transitioning to University of South Florida.

“My plan is to major in biology and minor in photography,” Lera said. Her ultimate plan is to become a veterinarian, but to continue to feed her interest in the photographic arts.

“I started out in drawing classes, working in graphite in my sketch book,” she said. “And then on my 13th birthday my dad gave me his Nikon camera.”

Her other inspiration is an aunt who has had the honor of showing at a gallery in Wynwood, the up-and-coming arts center of South Florida. “The gallery owner asked me to bring some of my prints, too, and so I did.”

While Lera has shot many high school football games, she’s most proud of a piece she created using two high school friends, who are twins. She presented the duality of their natures by painting one in color, and the other in black and white and then photographing the two holding a frame.

“It was my favorite piece,” she said.

Spear-o When Lucas Ponzoa was just a young lad of about 12 years old, he experienced one of the best “fights” of his life — fighting a fish, of course.

“I shot a 66-pound cobia in really cloudy waters one day when I was out with Clay and Drake Daniels. Then the sharks started chasing us, so we got in the boat and continued to fight. We were so scrawny back then, it took us forever,” he recalls, laughing.

He’s gone on to land other big ones, of course, like the 70-pound grouper he shot in the Bahamas not too long ago. It will be hard to be away from the waters he loves so much, but he’s headed into the interior of Florida to Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville.

“I want to study business for four years, the last two at University of Florida, and then come home to run my dad’s guiding business. One day I want it to be mine,” Ponzoa said.

If given the choice between fishing topside (on the boat) or underwater (spearfishing), Ponzoa always chooses the latter. It’s … active.

“It’s boring to just sit there. I like going down, finding the fish, chasing them, seeing the coral and all the other animals down there,” he said.

Fisherman This kid loves working. And when he’s not working, he loves fishing and Marathon.

“Oh, man, I think the first time I sat down in the crane I was probably like seven years old,” he said. When the Keys Weekly reached him on Memorial Day he was fresh off the job — setting pilings for another project for the family business, Marathon Seawall and Docks.

“My goal is to go to school, and then come home and take over the business,” Culmer said. He’s headed to Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville to study business administration.

Like most Marathon kids, he gets his thrills fishing. Culmer likes the big game best — offshore hunting for gamefish like big mahi mahi. Although that one 40-pound cobia on 12-pound test was quite a challenge too.

“I got it near the boat and reached out to gaff it and fell in the water,” Culmer said. That fish tasted very excellent, he said. When he’s in Gainesville, Culmer will indulge in his other love — hunting; probably deer or hogs.

Wildcard Audrey Matthis is headed off to University of South Florida in Tampa for the fall semester. She’ll study math with an eye on becoming an actuary, an applied science mathematician, or a teacher.

“My two favorite classes were AP Biology and AP Calculus,” she said. “In biology, Ms. Cox pushed us to learn and it was the first class that was about understanding, not regurgitating information. And Ms. Heyl’s AP Calculus was beyond challenging. It was either learn or drown.”

Matthis is graduating with a 3.9 GPA. She was a part of the swim team for six years, weightlifting team for two, and track and field for one year.

Since her freshman year, and before, she has held two jobs simultaneously, ranging from selling ice cream at Sweet Savannah’s, to busing tables at the Cracked Conch to clerking in Sue Corbin’s accounting office.

Many of high school’s best moments came in the school’s front office — whether it was taking the teachers’ elementary-age school children to the bus stop or just chatting with Mrs. Jackie Gonzalez.

“In high school I learned to talk to adults and make friends with them.

Murph taught me more than anyone.

Teachers have a whole different level of wisdom.”

Matthis said she looks forward to living in Tampa and all the recreational and job opportunities there.

“In Tampa, it will be back to square one … a fresh start,” she said.

Wildcard This Marathon High School graduate is going places — first stop, Gainesville. She intends to become a physical therapist and one day work for a major professional sports team. It’s no wonder this gifted athlete would choose a career so closely aligned with her own talents.

“Let’s see, I did soccer for three years, cheerleading for four, weightlifting for two years, track and field for two years, and cross country when I was in sixth grade,” she said.

The first year Marathon High School had a track and field team, McKnight was the only girl to represent the school at the state meet.

McKnight has her favorites at Marathon High School. Jamie Buhyoff, the AVID teacher, is always at the top of the list.

“She’s like a mother to us. She’s so sweet and she takes care of us,” she said. Then Jessie Schubert: “I go to his class like ten times a day just to talk to him.” And Paula Thompson: “She always tells me it’s going to be okay.”

Her family has been just as inspirational. From her mother she learned to be kind and to push for results.

From her dad, to work hard. From her brother, Xavier, how to handle the spotlight.

At the baccalaureate ceremony, McKnight and Audrey Matthis were chosen to give a speech on friendship.

She said, “Friends are the siblings God never gave us. Friendship means that I will be there to pick you up when you fall, after I finish laughing.”

have a lot of qualms about sending my first-born off to school. Many, many qualms. I’ve neatly packaged up most of that anxiety into worrying about what I should send with her to University of South Florida. Most of it.

Please, let me share the results of my angst.

DORM SAFE Starting at $20 @ Dormco.com There’s a minimum of privacy in any group living situation; certainly less than your-off-to-college child can imagine. A lack of privacy can sometimes mean a lack of security and there might be things they would like to lock up — tips from a waitressing job, perhaps.

There are tiny safes big enough for a wad of cash or a smartphone, and larger ones capable of keeping a few more valuables.

BLOW UP BED

THE NAKED ROOMMATE $12 @ Amazon.com This self-help book tackles the most topical of issues an incoming college freshman might face from the aforementioned roommate to other issues like dorm life, classes, dating scene, sex, no sex, or hearing other people having sex, greek life, drinking, drugs, homesickness, technology and laundry. This isn’t your parent’s advice but apparently author Harlan Cohen is doing something right, because the latest iteration is the 7th printing. It’s already ordered.

It has all the regular stuff like sheets and towels plus crap I didn’t even think of like a surge protector and a first aid kit. My anxiety level just peaked.

$60 If I’m certain of one thing (I’m not), it’s that we will be buying a Keurig K-Compact Single Serve K-Cup Pod coffee maker in turquoise.

My kid needs coffee. She needs it in the morning, she needs it in the afternoon and (yes, some will argue) she needs it in the middle of the night. Quiet. She’s a teenager and ruining her body and sleep rhythms is her American right. The con of these things is that those pods can get expensive for cashstrapped freshmen. So, I will also be buying her one of those reusable cups she can fill with coffee grounds when she’s broke.

BOOK ABOUT THE KEYS No I was seriously considering buying my kid a coffee table book about the Florida Keys. I thought it would be a great conversation starter. That last sentence I heard in my own mother’s voice, immediately followed by the (again, just in my head) voice of my daughter.

“No, mom. Just. No.” Sigh.

f the $35 million Monroe County expects to receive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Hurricane Irma damage, a little more than 6 percent has returned in the last few months.

Monroe County commissioners discussed at their first budget meeting May 23 a recently-approved amount of $1.5 million coming to the county, on top of a $604,000 payment last month.

“This leaves another $33 million that the county has already submitted to FEMA but is still waiting to go through the process,” said county spokeswoman Cammy Clark.

After FEMA approves reimbursement for submitted projects, those “obligated” funds go to the state for its approval process before being sent to the county.

Bill Slater of Tidal Basin, a consulting firm, told commissioners there has been a “perfect storm” that has led to the slow reimbursement. FEMA rolled out a new delivery model last year just as it was being overwhelmed with submissions from several major hurricanes and wildfires across the country and Puerto Rico. The state of Florida also decided not to expedite FEMA funding and instead is requiring 100 percent validation before sending FEMA money to local governments, Clark said.

Monroe County is the only entity in Florida that has received FEMA reimbursement from Irma.

Canal cleanup Meanwhile, as it prepares for a grant amount of $49.2 million from the USDA’s National Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), the county is opening a request for proposals today, May 31, for marine debris removal.

“The county is moving forward with our own solicitation of contractors,” said Rhonda Haag, county program manager.

The state office, in Gainesville, has already approved the eligibility of 103 canals in the Keys and environmental permits from National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are both in process.

The marine debris removal work is on a reimbursable basis.

The county does not get the money up front, but will receive 75 percent back, so the actual amount coming to the county is about $37.8 million, Haag said.

It’ll cover work for 103 canals in unincorporated Monroe, Islamorada and Marathon.

The state Department of Environmental Protection hired DRC Environmental Services in February to do marine debris removal for the county but DRC pulled out in mid-May after it said it underbid the project.

W

hen singer-songwriter Kenny Edwards left the Stone Poneys, the band he co-founded with Linda Ronstadt, he didn’t rest long. Southern California in the mid to late 1960s was home to a growing scene of rockers influenced by country and folk. There was a lot of talent around. Edwards ended up forming a band with three other like-minded multi-instrumentalist singer songwriters with names you may recognize — but you’ll have to wait for the reveal.

They formed a band called Bryndle, wrote songs, and recorded a debut album for A&M Records in 1970. Outside of a limited-release single, nothing from those recording sessions ever made it to disc, and the album was never released. Discouraged, and with little to show after all their hard work and recordings, Bryndle disbanded.

All four members of Bryndle established solo careers, and each ended up working with Linda Ronstadt in the 1970s and ’80s. Kenny Edwards reconnected with her and recorded and toured with Ronstadt for 10 years.

He also worked with Emmylou Harris, Stevie Nicks, J.D. Souther, Don Henley, Brian Wilson, Warren Zevon, Art Garfunkel, Vince Gill, Mac McAnally, David Lee Murphy, Jennifer Warnes, Danny Kortchmar, and Lowell George.

Andrew Gold was a member of Ronstadt’s band for years, and produced a number of her hit records. He played every instrument on Ronstadt’s hit, “You’re No Good.� He also had hits of his own, including “Lonely Boy� and “Thank You For Being a Friend� (which was re-recorded as the theme song for “The Golden Girls� TV show). He also sang the theme song for the TV series “Mad About You.� Gold worked with Paul McCartney, Don Henley, James Taylor, Brian Wilson, Roy Orbison, Ringo Starr, Carly Simon, John Waite, Roxy Music, Jennifer Warnes, Stephen Bishop, America, Nicolette Larson, Maria Muldaur, Neil Diamond, Freddie Mercury, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Karla Bonoff, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Cher, Jesse McCartney, J.D. Souther and others.

Karla Bonoff sang backup vocals for Ronstadt, and her career as a songwriter got a huge boost when Linda recorded three of her songs for an album in 1976. Bonoff released her debut album the following year, and has recorded and toured ever since.

Wendy Waldman recorded and toured with Ronstadt in the 1970s, and her debut album in 1973 led Rolling Stone magazine to award her the “singer-songwriter debut of the JOHN year.� She recorded BARTUS several albums, but moved to Nashville is a City Council member and Vice in 1979 to focus on Mayor of the City songwriting and of Marathon. Her most popular song was “Save the Best for Last,� co-written for Vanessa Williams. It was nominated for a Grammy award.

The members of Bryndle didn’t give up when their record label wouldn’t release their album. And they were moving in the same musical circles for years. A quarter-century after their initial recordings, Bryndle reunited and recorded their eponymously titled debut album. It was really good: beautiful compositions, incredible arrangements, and angelic harmonies. They toured the U.S. and Japan, but the record never took off.

Andrew Gold temporarily left the band, but worked with them again for the five years it took to record their second album.

Just like their debut album, 2002’s “House of Silenceâ€? featured the same amazing trademark Bryndle sound. It was just as good as their first ‌ and it also went nowhere, at least in terms of massive sales.
