ith the simple flip of a tassel, a fresh batch of Keys kids turned young adults are now ready to trek into the uncharted territory of “adulting.” Don’t fret, most of them have been coached pretty well

by Monroe County’s all-star educators. Bestowing academic knowledge isn’t all they do, though. Teachers often double as role models, coaches, mentors, and even babysitters – it’s what makes them special and vital to a tight-knit community. They deserve a lot of credit for their unwavering dedication during an extremely trying school year. The Weekly asked …

Which teacher taught you the most important life lesson?

Key West High School Valedictorian Class of 1999 Julio Torrado, who is the director of human resources at Keys Energy Services, said his sixth-grade English teacher Judy Davis left a lasting impact on him. “In response to another teacher chastising me about asking too many questions, she told me to NEVER stop asking questions, it’s the only way to learn what you don’t know.”

Monica Munoz of Historic Tours of America is a Conch and Gator grad and says her mom was her best teacher. “She was a no-nonsense Jersey girl who made sure both my sister and I were provided opportunities for college,” she said.

Her mom, who didn’t even graduate high school, said to get a degree as fast as possible, no wasting time or money. Munoz took the words to heart and graduated high school at 17 and college at 20. “There was no time for partying.”

Sandra Ballard is graduating Friday night and then starting the nursing program at Florida Keys Community College. “Mr. Jimmy Forbus, my health careers teacher, retired last year but used to always tell us our class was the cream of the crop; that sticks with me,” she said.

“Mr. Whaley was a hard teacher who made us work really hard,” said Raquel Mendez of the class of 2006 with her kids. “He expected the most out of us and taught us a lot about finance, which has helped the most.”

Krystal Gomez, class of 2008, ran into her favorite science teacher Mr. Walden at her son’s kindergarten graduation. She couldn’t resist the opportunity to praise him. “I don’t really remember anything that he taught me,” she said. “But I know we had the very best memories from his class.”

f the $35 million Monroe County expects to receive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Hurricane Irma damage, a little more than 6 percent has returned in the last few months.

Monroe County commissioners discussed at their first budget meeting May 23 a recently-approved amount of

$1.5 million coming to the county, on top of a $604,000 payment last month.

“This leaves another $33 million that the county has already submitted to FEMA but is still waiting to go through the process,” said county spokeswoman Cammy Clark.

After FEMA approves reimbursement for submitted projects, those “obligated” funds go to the state for its approval process before being sent to the county.

FEMA rolled out a new delivery model last year just as it was being overwhelmed with submissions from several major hurricanes and wildfires across the country and Puerto Rico. The state of Florida also decided not to expedite FEMA funding and instead is requiring 100 percent validation before sending FEMA money to local governments, Clark said.

Canal cleanup Meanwhile, as it prepares for a grant amount of $49.2 million from the USDA’s National Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), the county is opening a request for proposals today, May 31, for marine debris removal.

“The county is moving forward with our own solicitation of contractors,” said Rhonda Haag, county program manager.

The state office, in Gainesville, has already approved the eligibility of 103 canals in the Keys and environmental permits from National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are both in process.

The marine debris removal work is on a reimbursable basis. The county does not get the money up front, but will receive 75 percent back, so the actual amount coming to the county is about $37.8 million, Haag said.

It’ll cover work for 103 canals in unincorporated Monroe, Islamorada and Marathon.

The state Department of Environmental Protection hired DRC Environmental Services in February to do marine debris removal for the county but DRC pulled out in mid-May after it said it under-bid the project.

KEY WEST TEACHER MR. KREMER LOOKS BACK regory Kremer spent Tuesday morning teaching his last week of class at Key West High School. The soon-to-be retired teacher visited Key West in June 1987 and met Mr. Tommy Roberts and the rest is history. “His spirit and enthusiasm for Key West High School was so impressive that I was here by January of 1988,” said Kremer. “I have been here ever since.”

Raised in Detroit and Philadelphia, Kremer is a graduate of Archbishop Ryan High School, John Carroll University for his bachelor’s, and University of Akron for his master’s.

A teacher of psychology, AP psychology, DE sociology, world religions, and philosophy, his last days at the high school included lessons on Sigmund Freud to a still-intrigued class.

Along with a handful of other teachers, Kremer is one of the most mentioned “most inspirational” teachers in the Key West High School Student of the Week questionnaires. So, The Weekly wanted to know more about the man behind the door in classroom 204.

Nicknames? If they exist I probably could not write them.

Why did you want to become a teacher? I believe, like John Dewey and many others, that a good education is fundamental for a strong person and a solid society.

I had very good teachers and felt that I could add something. I also believe, as Socrates said, that, “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

Your students are often inspired by your “practical life advice.” Tell us more. Education is supposed to teach people new perspectives and how to think.

This generation needs to be A LOT SMARTER than we are. There are many boundaries being crossed rapidly and for the first time. They need to think and create. They also need to decide the future for all of us.

You are retiring this week after 40 years of teaching; what’s first on your to-do list? Chase my dream and continue traveling the world.

What is the most rewarding experience being a teacher? Amos Alonzo Stagg, when asked what he thought of his football team that year, told the reporter to come back in 20 years and he would see what kind of men they were then.

I have been here 30 years, and

every day I see them leading our community. I am proud of my students and I take pleasure in their accomplishments.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do/ buy? An around-the-world first class cruise package.

What’s the best advice you ever received? Work hard and good things will happen.

If you could change the world, what would you do? Have one world government, one common language along with the native language, and one common currency.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating… who walks in and sits next to you?

Mohandas Gandhi. I would love to experience the power of his personality and hear his wisdom.

Favorite Keysy thing to do? Boat, fish, dive, and ride my bicycle all year long.

What would your superpower be? Compassion.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Prague, Paris, Seville, and Medellin (where I am going to live for the next year).

What did you want to be when you grew up? A U.S. Marine. My father, a World War II vet, filled me with respect for these soldiers.

here have been many versions of the Overseas Highway. When it opened to public use in 1928, the original path followed the Card Sound route. The 18-Mile Stretch section, as well the Jewfish Creek Bridge, were not incorporated into the highway system until the third version of the highway was celebrated in 1944. When the Jewfish Creek Bridge was first constructed as a conduit for Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad it had a 100-foot swing bridge. When a boat needed to pass, the bridge tender was able to take a crank and turn it, turn it, turn it until the bridge began to swing open.

Some 62 miles down the road, the modern Seven Mile Bridge became incorporated into the Overseas Highway when it opened to traffic in 1982. For the record, at 35,862 feet in length the bridge is 1,098 feet short of seven miles.

The original Seven Mile Bridge was technically four bridges made up of the Knights Key Bridge (6,803 feet), Pigeon Key Bridge (5,935 feet), Moser Channel Bridge (13,947 feet), and the Pacet Channel Viaduct (9,035 feet).

The first three, Knights Key, Pigeon Key and Moser Channel sections were built using concrete piers reinforced with ¾ inch steel rods. Steel girders, 80 feet long and weighing 41.5 tons, were lowered across the piers to create the foundation to which the railroad tracks were later attached. The fourth section, the Pacet Channel Viaduct, utilized a series of arches to support the tracks. Like the Jewfish Creek Bridge, a swing bridge was built into the Moser Channel sec-

tion to allow for boat traffic using the shipping channel.

For railroad workers who had completed construction of the Seven Mile Bridge, the 5,055 feet separating Bahia Honda Key from Spanish Harbor Key must have looked like a short and manageable expanse. Though the end result is probably the most iconic of the bridges and certainly the most picturesque, the Bahia Honda Bridge was one of the most difficult to construct — largely because of the dangerously strong currents ripping through the pass during tidal changes. As a result, work days on the bridge piers were cut to two 45-minute shifts during slack tide, the short time between the high and low tides when the water becomes still.

When the railroad was still operating, passengers were told to keep their hands and heads inside the train as it rambled and roared through the camel-trestle bridge 25 feet above the water.

After the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane ended the run of Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad, many of the railroad bridges were refitted to accommodate automobile traffic.

When the second version of the highway opened to traffic in 1938, the road passed through what is today Bahia Honda State Park and up and over the top of the bridge, 65 feet over the clear, colorful water.

Stories passed along from those days say the bridge was so narrow that when two buses happened to pass, their side-view mirrors would smash into each other. The modern Bahia Honda Bridge used by the highway today opened to traffic in 1972. Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

KEEPING WATCH FPL installs extraction wells to protect drinking water KATIE ATKINS

he water that flows out of a kitchen sink in Key West has traveled a four-day, 130-mile journey over 43 bridges to get there.

It comes from the Biscayne Aquifer in Florida City.

“You could actually drink it coming right out of the ground,” said Julie Cheon, public information officer for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority.

But the wellfield where Monroe County’s water originates faces a threat from the nearby Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station in Homestead.

Turkey Point, owned by Florida Power and Light, uses a 6,000acre canal system to cool its nuclear reactors. The water, which has excessive amounts of salt, has been leaching out into the Biscayne Aquifer and is approaching the wellfield, Cheon said.

To prevent it from getting there, FPL has installed extraction wells to remove the coolant water and pump it about 3,000 feet below ground on Turkey Point property.

It will take some time to see if that actually works and retracts the saline plume that continues to spread. It could reach Monroe’s wellfield within a year or so at the current rate.

“FPL has agreed to install these wells to capture the hypersaline solution and draw it back to their property, but there is ongoing water quality monitoring and they’re required to do a continued mapping of the saline plume,” said Lee Hefty, director of Miami-Dade County’s Division of Environmental Resources Management.

The extraction wells were installed about two weeks ago, and he gave a presentation last week to the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority.

“In roughly a year, we’ll be able to take a look and see if this model they’ve implemented is working,” Cheon said.

What would happen if the saline plume actually leaked into Monroe County’s drinking water wellfield?

“It would leave our existing wells inoperable,” Cheon said. “We would then be required to either move the wellfield or construct additional reverse osmosis treatment. Either option would require the Aqueduct Authority to incur tremendous capital expenditures.”

Today, May 31, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is holding two public meetings in Homestead to gauge concern about plans at Turkey Point to extend operating licenses for two of its reactors.

The NRC says if those licenses are renewed, which would extend the use of the two reactors through 2053, it will mean Turkey Point has to continue using the cooling canals, which are “failing.”

In a letter to Monroe County and the aqueduct, the NRC said the “current plan for the leaking cooling canal system might not work to stop the pollution emanating from Turkey Point and resolve the hypersaline water that has existed in the canals for decades.”

Cheon said FKAA will have a presentation at the meeting.

“The FKAA is opposed to an extension of the license until there is sufficient evidence that FPL’s actions to halt and retract the hypersaline plume are working,” she said.

Today’s public hearings start at 1 and 5 p.m. with hour-long open houses prior to the start of meetings. They’ll be at Homestead City Hall, 100 Civic Court, Homestead.

NEW BUILDING The FKAA’s Key West administration building at 1100 Kennedy Drive sustained serious damage during Hurricane Irma.

It has been deemed unsafe for the long term by engineers.

“We are going to shore up the portions of the building with the most damage so they are safe and that’ll get us through until we build a new building,” Cheon said.

The new building will go on the same property and the old building will be demolished and possibly replaced with a parking garage.

“We’re making some contingency plans and hoping like heck we don’t have to use them,” Cheon said, referring to future hurricane possibilities.

Should another storm head for the Keys, all staff working in the Key West building will have to evacuate to other FKAA offices in the Keys, which is a fairly simple solution, she said.

“But there is no long-term option to stay in this building. It’s a safety issue,” she said. There is no timeline for construction of the new building.

Scholar Avery Zuelch is heading to University of California Los Angeles and says not having close-knit relationships with her teachers will take some time getting used to. “I have made great connections with my teachers and they have helped me so much along the way,” she said. “I do look forward to exploring the West Coast.” Her plans include biology, biomedical research and eventually being a trauma surgeon. She says she will be miss Key West High School baseball games the most.

Scholar Camden Switzer is heading to Brown University to major in biochemistry and then will head to medical school. She said it was a huge relief when her acceptance came in, but will miss her best friends who are staying in Florida as well as the ability to go out on the boat whenever she wants while at college. Her advice to underclassmen: “have fun, but prioritize your goals,” she said. “Do things with confidence, but not arrogance.”

Athlete Graduate Kalli Melilli spent her years at Key West High School playing lacrosse and marching in band. She’s heading off to University of Florida and will miss the friends she made, but is looking forward to new experiences and meeting new people. “I started bugging this girl in first period freshmen year, and now will be rooming with that same girl in college four years later,” she said. “I’ll miss hanging out with my childhood friends on this beautiful island the most.”

Artist Before transferring to a university, Dylan Spencer will be attending Florida Keys Community College. He hopes to study in the field of sports medicine, since he is passionate about sports.

As a member of the wakeboard club, lacrosse team, and cross country, he said he is looking forward to traveling since he visited Cuba. “No matter how big your dream is, if you work hard, you can achieve it,” he said.

“Performing is a passion of mine,” he said, and urges underclassmen to try things out of their comfort zone. “You’ll never find your passion if you are too afraid to try it.”

Super volunteer One of the most involved students at Key West High School, Gabriela Sonzogni said she is proud of all the clubs she was involved in that helped shape who she is. “Join the club and don’t procrastinate,” she wanted to let underclassmen know. She heads off to University of Central Florida to study business administration.

Musician Gracie Meyer spent her high school career involved with marching band and drama club, with her favorite memory being the drum major. She couldn’t be in a better place to pursue her passion in music and plans on staying in Key West to attend Arizona State University via online classes. She will miss the accessibility to the opportunities she was afforded at Key West High School and her biggest piece of advice to underclassmen is “don’t quit band.”

Self-supporting Mairelys Cabrera will be attending Florida Keys Community College to pursue a career in business. She loved the culinary arts program at Key West High School and is looking forward to more learning experiences in a different environment.

uneral services for U.S. Army Lt. Col. (retired) and longtime Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Emil LaVache will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 1, at The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea church in Key West, 1010 Windsor Lane.

The Brooklyn, New York native was a fixture of the Sheriff’s Office for decades. Mr. LaVache passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018. He was 88.

“Emil was a true gentleman and public servant,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

Mr. LaVache spent 31 years in the Army with jumps in Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a lieutenant colonel and then became a Monroe County Deputy Sheriff full-time for 25 years and many years thereafter as a Reserve Deputy.

Hundreds and perhaps thousands of Florida Keys residents and visitors alike came to know Mr. LaVache via the many ways in which he donated his time to the community. He was active with the Monroe County inmate work program. Countless children throughout the county knew Mr. LaVache from his constant work at the Animal Farm, where he served as a tireless and cheerful greeter to all who entered the farm since its inception.

He spearheaded the Neighborhood Crime Watch organization. He also provided daily security checks to the Florida Keys Community College, the Key West Sail & Power Squadron building, St. Mary’s soup kitchen and the Habitat for Humanity housing area in Big Coppitt Key, to name a few.

Mr. LaVache was often called to local schools where generations of children learned about safety and crime prevention through one of his presentations. Mr. LaVache had accumulated many, many community service hours while he worked at the Sheriff’s Office.

PADDLING

FOR THE CURE

O

nce again, Marathon’s Suzy Curry will be joining the Castaways as they paddle from Miami to Key West.

Now in its 19th year, the Castaways team has raised almost $1 million to support cancer research. Yes, $1 million.

At presstime, they are short only about $10,000 from the goal. Oh, and they’ve added up the miles, and it’s almost 3,000.

“That means we’ve paddled the same distance as across the U.S.,” said team leader Patrick Linfors. The idea for the paddle was conceived by Steve O’Brien, who sought to “light a candle rather than curse the darkness,” after losing, in quick succession, his mother and grandmother to cancer. The team — 17 people strong — takes off on Friday, June 9 from Miami and arrives in Key West on Friday, June 15 with stops along the way like Grassy Key and Bahia Honda. essica and Michelle share a passion for fitness. The Spottswood sisters-in-law met each other eight years ago. Now, five kids between the two later, they are growing their tribe a different way.

Their 5,000-square-foot modern industrial space is coming along after Hurricane Irma permitting delays. “Find Your Tribe,” a yoga, circuit, barre, battle ropes, and TRX training complex, is set to open in the fall with retail space, a “Tiny Tribe” kids care area, and an internet lounge.

In the meantime, the two have taken the extra time to expand their certifications. Michelle said she was constantly going to Jessica, a personal trainer who has competed in body competitions nationally, for guidance. “We realized there was a need for a one-stop shop,” said Michelle, who added the Stock Island area is the new up-and-coming community with room to grow.

Although there are just cement floors and concrete blocks for now, the vision is big. The space will evolve with graffiti art, mirrors, and radiant heat for some classes. “You’ll be able to go from lunges to warrior with ease,” said Michelle.

From weighted glove fight classes and a “club-like” circuit room to 12 different types of yoga from hot to hip-hop, and barre classes, the vibe will be eclectic.

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family, whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”

As for the tribe inspired name, “we went through 10 months of names and we couldn’t connect with any of them” said the two, who both believe in a sense of community. “We read this quote

The most important thing for the FYT moms is the family atmosphere. “We know how hard it was to work out after our babies were born,” said the two. “The whole family can come here to sweat.”

hile baseball is heralded as the southernmost pastime, it was boxing that once defined the island’s gritty spirit. And on Saturday, June 9, the sweet science returns to Key West for an evening of professional bouts, resurrecting a tradition that runs deep within the town’s history.

Southernmost Fights will feature up to nine bouts at the East Martello Towers, showcasing an array of worldclass boxers. The proceeds will benefit the Key West Firefighters Local 1424.

“We’ve been working on this project for about three years now,” said Louie C. Rock of ATL Productions.

“And once Irma happened, we knew this would be the perfect fit to help a lot of the firemen who were personally affected by the storm.”

Along with fighters who have performed on boxing’s biggest stages (including one who recently fought in a world title bout) Southernmost Boxing will offer a chance to see a local talent, Ashot Mnatsakanian. The fighter, who trains out of the PAL gym with notable trainer Ricky Jackson, will be representing Key West in his fourth professional fight. According to Jackson, who has trained local pros like Danny Van Staden and Timmy Lenard, Mnatsakanian has big potential in the sport.

“I believe he has a good future in boxing, but it’s all about the time someone can put into it,” said Jackson.

“He comes from a great pedigree of Ukrainian boxing, but he has to work to live here like everyone else, and trying to balance family, work and professional boxing is not easy.”

Jackson, who was 19 when he started boxing in Key West, has witnessed the fluctuation of boxing’s popularity on the island. Some of his most notable stories date back to his amateur fights in the ’70s, when Kermit “Shine” Forbes would referee his fights.

It was “Shine” who also refereed, and possibly mixed it up with, Ernest Hemingway (depending on whom you ask).

But Jackson’s love for the sport has been renewed over the past 15 years as head of PAL’s (Police Athletic League) boxing program. It was the late Si Stern who asked Jackson to head up the program in 2004. At the time, Stern had contracted with ESPN 2 to showcase an evening of Friday Night Fights at Mallory Square and needed a trainer for some of the local fighters.

“Stern wanted me to train some of the local guys and I figured I would do it for about two years,” said Jackson.

“I got a chance to train Danny and some of the local pros and they really forced me to become a better trainer.

So for me, the upcoming fights give me a chance to carry on what those guys started and connect boxing to the community.”

Louie C. Rock also believes the upcoming bouts pay tribute to boxing’s lasting legacy on the island by reminiscing about amateur fights out of the former Iron Bodies Gym. According to Rock, those fights (dubbed Bubba Boxing) would spill into Truman Avenue and later expanded into the Epic building on Duval.

“Those fights would have over 1,000 people in attendance,” said Rock.

“Boxing is universal and it’s a big tradition down here. And a lot of people don’t know that Muhammad Ali would come visit the old dog track on Stock Island, which is another testament to our boxing tradition.”

Ricky Jackson and Danny Van Staden have been instrumental in preserving boxing’s lasting legacy in Key West.

Although an evening of professional boxing in Key West will provide added nostalgia, the fight card is comparable to something one might find on major television networks.

Aaron Skinner, a KWHS grad who has gone on to work with some of the biggest names in the sport, is bringing his renowned match making skills back home for the first time.

“Next Saturday’s fights will have a little bit of everything,” said Skinner.

“We have heavyweights and flyweights, technical punchers and power guys.

And we have an incredible main event—featuring Felipe Rivas (who recently fought for a world title) against Alonso Melendez (14-2 with 12 KO).

MUSEUMS WELCOME MILITARY – FOR FREE

rom Memorial Day to Labor Day, members of the military and their families can receive free admission to more than 2,000 museums across the U.S., including three facilities in the Keys.

Taking part in the Blue Star Museum program are the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada and the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden as well as the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West.

The Blue Star Museum program is a collaboration of the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense, along with more than 2,000 museums across America. The program offers free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and up to five family mem-

bers, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “With the large number of military bases in Florida alone, we are honored at the opportunity to show our support and appreciation for those that serve” said Josh Thacker, History of Diving Museum collections and exhibit manager and Army veteran.

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention Common Access Card (CAC), a DD Form 1173, or a DD Form 1173-1, which includes active duty military and five immediate family members, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve. ust a few short years ago, the Stock Island Film Festival was an idea that was “kind of tongue in cheek, since its acronym is STIFF,” said Program Director Quincy Perkins, whose jest is becoming reality this year. He explains, “We wanted to program edgier content that a guest might not see at the Key West Film Festival, which is more classic film.” Perkins’ oeuvre includes “Swingers Anonymous,” which debuted at Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

He also is director of local programming for the Key West Film Festival, whose selfdescribed mission is “to showcase films that capture Key West’s essence: creativity, diversity, sustainability and bBeauty.”

Perkins laughs: “I think it’s figuring out what Stock Island’s essence is.” The selections for the film festival “play off a lot of the infamous stories of Stock Island, and some of the films are about fishermen in the ’70s and ’80s. There was a group of guys that would fish for sharks in South Beach. Even though it didn’t take place in Key West, it’s totally Stock Island, and gritty.” Perkins is referencing the documentary “Rene de Dios and the South Beach Shark Club,” about a man who was known as a master of shark fishing in 1970s South Florida.

“South Beach Shark Club” is one of many films that will be featured at the Perry Hotel and Coast on Stock Island over the weekend of Thursday to Saturday, June 7-9. It’s the inaugural year of the Stock Island Film Festival, having grown out of conversations and dreams of the team behind the Key West Film Festival. Perkins says:

“It’s basically three days of short films and parties, and it’s just going to be lots of fun.”

While serious fun, STIFF is also to be taken seriously. Billy Corbin, director of “Cocaine Cowboys” and “Square Grouper,” will offer a sneak peak of his upcoming feature “A Sunny Place for Shady People,” as well as host the concluding award ceremony with Quincy Perkins. They will hand out awards for Best Comedy and Documentary, the “Square Grouper” Audience Award, the Perry Student Award, and the “Silver Stiffy” and “Golden Stiffy” for best local film and best all-round potential, respectively.

Perkins bills the programming as highly as the festivities: “I watch probably close to 1,200 short films a year, and this is really the best program of shorts I have put together in my life. I think we show a total of 30 short films … and every single one of them across the line is absolutely fantastic.” STIFF will feature local filmmakers, including shorts like “Chainsaw Cheerleaders of Bone Island” by Billy Rivera, as well as shorts by locals Joe Madaus and Scooby Perez. While the content has some focus on the Keys’ reputation of tropical criminality, there’s a lot that falls under the umbrella of “edgier” content. Perkins said, “There’s a great film called ‘Acid Test’ that Jennifer Waldo made, and it’s the best representation of a person on an acid trip that I’ve ever seen. It’s on June 9.” The Stock Island Film Festival will be “docking illegally” at the Perry Hotel (7001 Shrimp Rd.) and Coast (803 Whitehead St.). So, I will also be buying her one of those reusable cups she can fill with coffee grounds when she’s broke.

BOOK ABOUT THE KEYS No I was seriously considering buying my kid a coffee table book about the Florida Keys. I thought it would be a great conversation starter. That last sentence I heard in my own mother’s voice, immediately followed by the (again, just in my head) voice of my daughter.

Who knew China used to take about 75 percent of America’s recycling? They didn’t care if it was dirty, or discolored or if the pizza grease was still in the bottom of the cardboard box. But, now things are changing.

Recycling is a commodity — just like wheat, oil, iron, silver, copper, sugar and coffee. It’s the basis of something that can be turned into something else.

Residents recycle to help the environment, cities or municipalities collect it as a public service, and after that the bottles and cans enter the free market. And that market fluctuates.

“Basically, supply of recycled materials has grown and the demand hasn’t followed,” said Waste Management’s Greg Sullivan. “Domestic markets aren’t the same as the Chinese markets. And, when China would take 40 percent contamination, domestically they only want 100 percent pure product.”

Knowledge is key. Pure products mean no tableware, no mirrors, no pizza boxes, no Corona bottles with the lime still in it.

“The education component is huge now,” said Sullivan. “Just look at the top of the recycle bin to see what you can and cannot put in the bin.”

Marathon Garbage Service’s Greg Konrath echoed Sullivan’s sentiments.

“People in Marathon do a pretty good job of recycling correctly,” he said. “If the recycling is contaminated, my guys will leave it in the bin. If you want to recycle, make an effort to recycle correctly.”

Both Waste Management and Marathon Garbage Service try to keep recycling information handy.

“If there is garbage in it, it’s garbage,” said Konrath.

Waste Management serves customers living in Key West all the way up to the 7 Mile Bridge.

THINGS YOU CAN’T RECYCLE Paper plates, plastic bags (they get stuck in the machine). aerosol canes, window glass, toys, tires, hoses, dishes, Styrofoam (the pieces are broken up too small and blow out of the machine), ceramics, greasy pizza boxes, unrinsed plastic or glass. The sorting machine runs 24-7 and has to be shut down about every four hours to clear plastic bags and other “nonrecyclable” items. Most local grocery stores will let you return the plastic bags, or better yet, bring your own bags when grocery shopping.
