The internet is undefeated when it comes to blowing our minds, and yet again, a new internet challenge has emerged that is sure to start some heated debate. It all started when a Reddit user uploaded a video with the simple question, “what do you hear?” Some are sure they hear the word “Laurel,” others say it’s clearly saying “Yanny.” It’s become the most viral “this or that” since 2015’s “the dress,” being just slightly less annoying. So the Weekly asked…

he Thursday, May 24 Village Council meeting will begin with the presentation of a Community Hero Award. The United States Coast Guard will follow the award presentation with a presentation of its own about boater safety.

Citizen Advisory Committee Chair Pete Bacheler will update the village on happenings within the Local Planning Agency before the council begins to hear items on its consent agenda.

Following the resignation of the director of planning and two senior planners, the council will vote on a work authorization between Islamorada and the Corradino Group for planning services.

The proposal would cost Islamorada $30,000 a month. The group has been providing the village planning support since March.

Council members will also consider three purchases: an industrial wood chipper for the public works department, vacuum pump truck for waste water operations, and a 2019 Freightliner M2 custom Type 1 ambulance for the fire department.

About $175,000 has been budgeted for a replacement ambulance. With the village opting to upgrade the shell of an old ambulance and attaching it to a new shell, the new price tag for the ambulance is $214,468. Once the reserve truck is sold as surplus, the money raised would be used to offset the cost of its replacement. In all, Fire Chief Terry Abel estimates the repurposing of the old shell could save $70,000.

“I need to have a reserve truck that is reliable, and right now I don’t have that,” said Abel.

The biggest benefit to upgrading the ambulance is the patient-carrying system, Abel said. Not only does the carrying system make it safer for patients being transported in the gurney, it also makes it effortless for paramedics to load patients in the truck. Paramedics risk injury when hoisting patients into older ambulances, said Abel. The new system saves their backs – literally.

The meeting will wrap with a discussion regarding Publix and traffic by Councilman Jim Mooney, a discussion on fills by Councilman Mike Forster, as well as an update from the interim planning director on accessory dwelling units and changes to land development regulations.

In other news: • The council and village staff will make annual appointments for advisory committees, including the Historic Preservation Commission, and Local Planning Agency.

• Council members will also consider two ordinances at the meeting. The first seeks to amend the official zoning map for 10 parcels, while the second ordinance seeks to create staggered four-year terms for council members.

• An agreement between the village and Tavernierbased Aeration Technologies Inc. to resurface the athletic fields will also be up for approval.

Historically, Carysfort Reef has been one of the most dangerous tracts of coral along the Florida Reef. According to one study, of the 324 documented reef wrecks between 1833 and 1841, 63 were attributed to Carysfort Reef.

After the purchase of the Florida Territory, Carysfort was marked with a lightship in 1824. A letter dated July 1851, and written by Lt. David D. Porter, U.S.N., commander of the U.S. mail-steamer Georgia, “On the reef near Cape Large the floating lightship, showing two lights, intended to be seen twelve miles, but they are scarcely discernible from the outer ledge of Carysfort Reef, which is from four to five miles distant. On to [sic] occasions I have passed it at night, when the lights were either very dim or not lighted.” By the time the letter had been written, Captain Howard Stansbury of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers had been placed in charge of building a lighthouse to mark the reef. Stansbury managed to oversee the formation of the base for a 112-foot lighthouse before retiring from the project. He was replaced by Major Thomas B. Linnard, who died a short time later. Lieutenant George Meade finished the Carysfort job in 1852. Carysfort would not be the last lighthouse Meade would help construct along the Florida Reef, as he would also oversee construction of Sombrero Key Lighthouse. n Tuesday, Nov. 6, Key Largo residents will head to the polls to decide a number of positions in local government including three seats on the Board of Commissioners for the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District.

Five commissioners make up the board and serve four-year terms. The Board elects three of its members to serve annual positions as the chair, the vice chair, and the secretary-treasurer.

Three incumbent commissioners are up for re-election. (Commissioners Sue Heim and Stephen Gibbs are up for reelection in 2020.) The Weekly asked the candidates three questions: 1. What do you think are the major accomplishments of the district during your previous term?

2. What are your goals for the future if re-elected?

3. How do you feel about the future of the district’s rates? Are they stable, are they expected to go up or down?

DAVE ASDOURIAN I think that moving ahead as a new utility, working on establishing new company policies and procedures, moving our office location, hooking up more of the remaining properties, and surviving Hurricane Irma were the main accomplishments of the last term.

If re-elected I would work to see KLWTD continue the excellent service that has been established and maintain the reasonable rates to the community since the system went online.

We should keep rates where they are. Let’s pay off debt first, then we can lower rates, a significantly lower amount as opposed to making a campaign promise now to lower the rate which would be equal to a dollar or two a month.

ANDY TOBIN It’s hard to summarize the major accomplishments during my term.

There are, however, three that stand out: 1) we have the lowest rates in the Keys; 2) we figured out how to bypass building multiple small treatment plants and built one main plant saving $8 million; and 3) we included Islamorada as a customer and required Islamorada to pay 30% of the $36 million cost to build a state of the art advanced wastewater treatment plant.

My goal, if I am honored to be reelected, is to continue to use my legal knowledge and experience for the betterment of the District and ultimately the residents of Key Largo.

Our $86 million initial debt is now below $30 million, and steadily declining. As a result, we are able to explore a rate reduction within the next 4-5 years.

ROBBY MAJESKA In the last two years, we have finished most of our construction phase.

Now we concentrated on efficiency.

We have realigned job descriptions for our staff. This has allowed us to run the administration component with less personnel, and allowed us to expand our maintenance and customer service operations.

The district has been under-funded by the state and the county. We have an enormous debt that has to be paid down. I will continue to find ways to save money, as well as secure more sources of money. Not wasting one cent of taxpayer money is my goal.

The district has had the same rates since 2006. We still have almost $40 million debt. We cannot reduce rates until we pay down our loans. I am however, in favor of changing the rate formula, in order to charge less to ratepayers that reduce water consumption.

Danceathon raises funds for Irma survivors Local Zumba instructors recently hosted a two-hour dance fitness party in Tavernier to raise funds for those still recovering from Hurricane Irma.

Zumba instructor Ana Beaty of Key Largo coordinated the joint efforts from Miami to the Florida Keys and the dancers were able to collect $2,300 with event tickets, a raffle and sale of clothing. Proceeds for the Lower Keys Recovery Effort went to The Keys Vineyard Community Church located on Big Pine Key, one of the hardest hit areas from Hurricane Irma.

About three dozen Zumba aficionados helped raise funds for survivors on Big Pine Key.

A member of the football team’s offensive line, Lopez’s favorite memories are “with the boys on the football field.”

Both a student and employee, Lopez works for his parents at the family business, Islamorada’s Tower of Pizza.

His five-year plan is to open more pizzerias. His 10-year plan is to franchise the very same pizzerias. Lopez credits Mr. Resillez with best preparing him for the future due to his solid financial advice. Lopez’s advice for the next generation of Island Christian students: “Smile and enjoy it as you go.” Lopez is graduating as the class treasurer.

Hidalgo is happy to be graduating but admits part of him wants to stay in high school with his friends. His toughest class was math, but thankfully, some of his classmates helped along the way. His favorite teacher is Mr. Resillez, who Hidalgo said is open, helps a lot, and is there for you if you need him. His favorite memories in high school are going to basketball and baseball games, and the senior trip to Ecuador. His future plans are to go to Miami Dade College to be a mechanical engineer or psychologist and later attend University of the Supernatural Ministry to spread the word of God. In five years Hidalgo sees himself in college; in 10, he hopes to be a minister traveling the world.

ADAM DUDLEY Class president Adam Dudley is also the class chaplain, an Interact Club member, and member of the school’s varsity football, basketball and baseball teams. His favorite memory from his athletic career is catching the winning touchdown pass against Redlands Christian to win runner-up at district competition. Dudley’s future plans are to attend Florida SouthWestern in Fort Myers and study to become a trauma nurse. His advice for underclassmen is to “make friends and have someone you can always come and talk to because high school life is pretty crazy sometimes. Also the more friends you get, the more free food you can get.”

ALYSSA BELL As vice president of the school’s Interact Club for the past two years, Bell and her classmates have been working to raise money locally and globally for vaccinations. Her favorite memories from high school are every time the school beat Princeton Christian and being sent to the corner by Mr. Resillez. Her toughest class was Latin.

Her future plans are to attend Florida Gulf Coast University in the fall. Bell said she wants to focus on something STEM-related. In five years she hopes to have no student loan debt and the complete Harry Potter replica wand collection. In 10 years she wants to hold down a job that brings stability and happiness.

CAMRYN NORMAN Norman said she is prepared for whatever’s next — as long as it doesn’t include chemistry or geometry. What she is ready for, however, is finding her voice in her writing. Her favorite teacher, Ms. Yost, has helped Norman master the art of research papers. An enthusiast of creative writing, Norman said Yost has given her the liberty and encouragement to explore her writing both in and out of the classroom. Her fondest memory is laughing hysterically in class, while Yost playfully called her and other students “hose heads.”

Norman’s future plans are to move up to Orlando in November and apply to community colleges in the area. She wants to study psychiatric nursing.

Some of Gallen’s favorite memories happened on the baseball field and wrestling mat. As Island Christian baseball team’s catcher, his fondest memory is when the team kept pace against a tough Miami Christian opponent.

Though they fell short, the team fought hard, said Gallen. His future plans include going to Santa Fe community college to obtain his certificate in paramedics and associate’s degree in EMS. He’s eyeing Orlando as a potential landing spot. “If you have a career that you want to have, start early,” said Gallen. In five years he sees himself as an EMS captain at a fire department. In 10 years, Gallen hopes to married with children, and a pit bull.

Makepeace founded the school’s PETSAA organization two years ago.

“I wanted a club that was focused on service and something that I’m passionate about like animal adoption. I have volunteered at the animal shelter since I was two.” Makepeace said her favorite teacher was Ms. Young, for her guidance in developing her art portfolio. Her future plans are to attend Palm Beach Atlantic University. She is undecided on a major but is excited to take art classes in college to master her own style and incorporate it into her profession. In five years, Makepeace said, she hopes to be starting a career that is both rewarding and beneficial to others. In 10 years she’d like to be married with cats.

The school’s Interact Club President for two years, Russell has participated in many service-based initiatives throughout the years like cleanups, fundraisers, and making care packages for the class’ senior trip to Ecuador. Russell’s favorite memory is playing center on the basketball team and winning district. Her future plans are attending Palm Beach Atlantic to study nursing.

In five years she hopes to be graduated, working a good job, and establishing herself, and by 10 years own her home. “I might get emotional in a day or two, but for now I’m just ready,” said Russell of graduating. Her parting advice to her classmates is, “always try to have a positive attitude.”

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? The first thing is graduate college with a master’s degree. Second, I would like to have a stable job and an average apartment. The last goal is to be involved in a nice church organization.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home?

Why or why not? I am never going to live in the Keys after college … traffic down here is terrible.

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE 1,300-unit road will be long

tand in front of a mirror in the dark, say “thirteen hundred” out loud three times, and Monroe County’s ghost of affordable housing will appear to have a talk about the current crisis.

Joking aside, 1,300 is the number of new affordable housing permits directed from Gov. Rick Scott for the Florida Keys, announced just two weeks ago.

In those two weeks, the mood among county officials has taken a hesitant turn, while others, especially those rallying for more affordable housing, are asking, what’s the holdup?

County officials say it’s a threepronged problem, all relating to overdevelopment of the Keys. They say it will be a quality-of-life issue on top of a safety problem should there be a mass evacuation in the event of a hurricane.

People living in the eventually developed units would be required to evacuate earlier than the rest of the county, which would be difficult to enforce, officials say.

Accepting the units could also open the floodgates to more units coming for the Keys, thus the possibility of more development. These have all been cited as examples during Board of County Commission meetings.

“Those are all valid concerns,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein, who lauded the governor’s initiative as a solution for Monroe in its time of need. “These are optional, and if at the end of the day they don’t feel they’re needed, then they don’t have to accept them.

But I know there are a number of municipalities that do want to have this option. Anywhere I go, people talk about the housing crisis, so this is the state’s offer, one of hopefully many offers. They’re trying to be helpful in our time of need.”

At the same time, commissioners spend hours discussing what to do about the affordable housing crisis, which was bad enough before Hurricane Irma and has only worsened.

“None of us can find the employees that we need, and if we find them, they can’t [afford to] stay here,” said Rockland Key LLC developer Joe Walsh at the first emergency BOCC meeting about the 1,300 units.

He urged the county to accept the units in a show of taking control over its own destiny.

“Turning down an opportunity to add additional affordable housing, to me, is a bad first step in trying to address those takings issues,” Walsh said.

He was talking about what will happen when there is no more development allowed in the Keys after 2023, and who will pick up the tab for potential “taking” lawsuits as a result of the state-mandated ROGO, or rate of growth ordinance.

“We’ve heard over and over again Monroe County wants to be in charge of its own affairs, and Monroe County gets treated as if it’s not qualified to make its own decisions about what to do with development rights,” he said, adding the county could amend its comprehensive plan to “square the circle” in how those units will be used.

Marathon City Planner George Garrett said municipalities could potentially accept units from the state on their own. Marathon requested 300 from the state in November, yet each different municipality would qualify for up to 300, except for Key Colony Beach and Layton, which are eligible for 100.

County attorney Bob Shillinger said each city in Monroe has the opportunity to amend its own comprehensive plans to accept up to 300 of this “new breed of ROGOs.” “They can make their decisions independent of what the county decides to do with respect to its comprehensive plan,” he said.

If a municipality accepts some of the 1,300 units, can they be changed down the road from affordable units to market-rate development units? No, because the 1,300 units will be deedrestricted affordable, Garrett said.

What about the county’s 555 unallocated affordable housing units and 1,000 market-rate units it can distribute?

“The state created a rule for each of us (local governments) that indicated how many units we received after the last hurricane evacuation modeling. Within those rules, for example, the county is required to set aside a certain percentage of the units awarded as affordable ROGOs,” said Christine Hurley, assistant county administrator. “In reality, only DEO can approve a change of an affordable to market-rate units.”

“As Christine stated, a comprehensive plan change would be necessary to change that ratio. Such a proposed change would be submitted to DEO for approval or rejection,” Shillinger said.

The next step is for the Florida Cabinet to approve the 1,300-unit initiative.

“It’s my understanding the DEO and governor will be requesting this at the next cabinet meeting on June 13,” Hurley said.

The County Commission has delayed accepting the 1,300 units until more details are available from the state.

uxury real estate broker Russell Post began his rise to prominence in 1993 when he started his firm, Russell Post Sotheby’s International Realty, to serve the Ocean Reef community. Post, who typically begins his day with breakfast and a workout before shooting over to his office, can also be found at Islamorada’s Sea Grapes for wine or Café Moka for dessert. Post is an active supporter of the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, and local art, and also presides over the board of trustees at the Academy at Ocean Reef.

More importantly, Post is a proud father to three teenagers, Alex, Caroline, and Lilly and devotes time to taking care of his mother, Irene, who recently turned 100.

In 1993, your brokerage firm began with just yourself and one secretary and has grown immensely over the past quarter century. What values and culture are most important in your team? It cannot happen without a team that shares the same values and culture of integrity, work ethic and teamwork. I’ve been fortunate to align with a wonderful group of professionals.

What’s the difference between selling regular real estate and high end luxury real estate? High end luxury properties today need outreach and technology to market them globally to buyers who are capable of owning properties throughout the world. Also, a knowledge of construction, and a broad spectrum of high-end finishes and furnishings. Otherwise, there is not any difference in selling luxury real estate and what we consider a mainstream price point. No matter what price point our clients are in the market for, we create an experience in the home buying process that is priceless. We believe luxury is an experience, not a price point!

You have made some shrewd investments over the years. Can you give our readers some property advice they can use? Today, with inflation looming, I think the timing for real estate purchases is excellent. To purchase a property that the family can enjoy and have it enhance in value at the same time is a healthy combination.

How has technology changed the way you sell real estate? Today, 90 percent of “first looks” at property happen online and most of those on a hand-held device. On the high end on the market, buyers are from all over the globe and we need to be able to reach them.

More than 70 percent of all real estate sales at Ocean Reef have been accounted for by your firm. What business principles made you a successful broker?

Work ethic, integrity and a team that shares those same values.

Being from Indiana originally, you have many traditional Midwest values.

Are you still a firm believer in the handshake deal? Certainly, in a relationship business like sales, it is critical. But shouldn’t it always be?

You have a history of community philanthropy. Which local causes are you most proud to support? There are more good causes than we have the means to support, but the arts, Habitat for Humanity and the Keys Children’s Shelter are special to us.

Together with Pasta Pantaleo, you opened Robert Russell Galleries at the Ocean Sotheby’s office in Islamorada.

Why is it so important to support the art scene? Clearly the arts are a significant part of the community. We enjoy the partnership with the artists and art lovers in Islamorada and the people we have met through our involvement.

What’s the most important thing your mother taught you? We celebrated Mom’s 100th yesterday and she received 43 birthday cards! One would think that most of her friends have passed, but she still connects with many.

She taught me how to treat others. I’m still learning from her.

You’ve conducted more than 70 skydive jumps. Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Skydiving is thrilling and requires total focus. When I had an accident a good friend said, “The head injuries must have occurred prior to his leaving the plane.”

Which historical figure, dead or alive, would you like to have lunch with? I’ve been blessed to have lunch, dinner and too many drinks with several presidents and many well-known people.

My preference now is to dine with old friends.

Which president was the most fun to sit and chat with, and what did they drink? President Nixon – scotch, whiskey and wine.

As an avid reader you try to have three books “going” at once. What are you currently reading? “Every Man Dies Alone” by Hans Fallada; “Build Your Fortune in the Fifth Era” by Davis and Le Merle and “Retreat Hell” by W.E.B. Griffin You very much enjoy the outdoors. Describe your ideal camping trip. In the mountains with streams for fly-fishing nearby.

ost Monroe County schools were constructed during a period when educators and families valued “openness” — campuses that felt inclusive and encouraging; the opposite of incarceration. And while many have gates at the front of the school, the sides and the rear of the building are wide open. All three Monroe County high schools, for example, are located on the water, with only a fringe of mangroves separating the campus from the ocean.

“Perimeter fences weren’t something parents or educators wanted 10 years ago,” said Pat Lefere, the school district’s executive director of operations and planning.

The Monroe County School District and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are conducting security assessments at all district schools before moving on to Keys charter schools. The examinations will include what physical safety measures can be taken immediately.

“There’s not a lot of lowhanging fruit that would be visible to the person watching from the outside,” said Lefere, “but thanks to our taxpayers and the half-penny tax that can be used for safety and security, we have the financial ability to make some improvements.”

School district begins comprehensive review of safety UPGRADES

“We’ve spent $500,000 in the last five years on security upgrades — perimeter security, fencing projects and working towards single point of access on all our campuses,” said Lefere. “For example, starting this summer we will be replacing cameras at the three high schools to replace the older systems with ones that have more capability and a clearer, better image.”

Patty Thompson is the director of school safety at Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s a new position, established in the last few months. She said part of the assessment process will cover how existing security measures can be aligned with new technology.

“We’re considering everything from the low tech — like rubber door stops or parking stickers — to electronic doors that have a master override,” Thompson said. On the mainland, some schools require students to carry “smart” ID cards that can, for example, reveal their current location or give them access to only certain areas.

Metal detectors, Lefere said, are probably not the solution for Monroe County.

“If you have a metal detector, you also need an X-ray machine to screen the bags.”

Lefere said that could require two employees, one to handle each function.

What the assessments will accomplish, most likely, will be a more standardized plan for all schools. What happens at any particular school, currently, generally involves decision making at the school level.

For example, at most schools, office receptionists let parents – and visitors they recognize – through the doors without an ID check. Strangers usually must go through an identification process.

“There’s no mandate on that from the district level,” Lefere said.

Another example of customized security is the “Text Tips” program at Sugarloaf School — developed by a parent — where students can text safety concerns to a telephone number. The anonymous tips could include topics like threats of violence, drugs on campus, bullying, or even thoughts of suicide. This week the district announced a plan to roll out the Text Tips program for every district school.

It’s likely students and parents and teachers will all deal with additional security measures, especially those outlined by the state legislation, when kids return to school next fall. There will be more security gear, new protocols, and more police presence in the form of a fulltime school resource officer at every school.

In recent weeks, there’s been much discussion about school resource officers (SROs) in Keys schools. The only three district schools without a full-time officer serve only elementary education age children. But, after a May 8 school board meeting in Marathon at which parents lamented the lack of security at Stanley Switlik Elementary, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay added an officer for the last two weeks of school at the expense of MCSO. Two elementary schools in Key West are staffed part-time by officers from the Key West Police Department.

Next year that will change, with the enactment of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act – state legislation in response to the tragedy at a Florida school that claimed 17 lives in February. It requires the district to assign at least one officer to each school, designate a “school safety specialist” to serve as liaison, and have a threat assessment team at each school.

The cost of an SRO including salary, equipment, training and benefits is estimated at $100,000 per year in the Keys.

According to Superintendent Mark Porter, the sheriff’s office bears about 65 percent of the SRO cost for officers it provides, and the Key West Police Department bears about 35 percent.

The state legislation sets aside $97 million to staff officers at each school but it’s unclear how much will go to each district, and the Keys school board has drafted a millage rate referendum question to appear on the August ballot. “If we can get the referendum passed to cover SROs, or supplement paying for SROs, we can move those resources over to mental health,” Porter said.

Monroe County School Board member Mindy Conn said, “Mental health is the first step to safety and security. We need psychologists, social workers. Personally I will be pushing for more of that on all our campuses. Treating the individual is our best protection from having some type of tragedy.”

The History of Diving Museum hosted its founder, Dr. Sally Bauer, to speak to guests about the history of Underwater Photography. Covering a history of more than 2,000 years, Dr. Bauer explained the series of historical events that lead to the making of the first underwater photographs.

Prior to Dr. Bauer’s presentation, local students from Horace O’Bryant, Key Largo School, and Coral Shores high school hung their entries for the museum’s International Poster Contest. The posters will be on display at the museum through Memorial Day before being shipped to International Poster Contest for Youth headquarters at Boynton Beach.

TAKE STOCK GRADUATES 58 STUDENTS Class of 2018 futures look bright KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

T

he Monroe County Education Foundation celebrated the accomplishments of 58 Take Stock in Children senior scholars on May 19 at the annual graduation ceremony. With a collective weighted grade point average of 3.69, two-thirds of this year’s class will attend a Florida university, while others will go out of state or into the military.

With its mission is to provide students with the financial resources to attend college, the Monroe County Education Foundation board continues to focus on providing students with the tools and skills necessary to complete a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Program Coordinator Chuck Licis highlighted the importance of Take Stock’s college and career readiness efforts: “This year’s class is ready to take the next step, to pursue their college goals and career dreams.”

Each student is paired with a mentor throughout his or her time in the program. The mentor meets with the student on campus weekly.

Most students joined the program in seventh grade.

Starting with Take Stock in Children and coming from a family of five children, Chandler Rowland says the scholarship takes a lot of burden off his family. “This gives my parents a little piece of mind,” he said.

He started the program in ninth grade with his mentor Terry Abel. “Terry taught me a lot of things, most importantly to be determined and willing to work hard to achieve my goals,” said Rowland, whose twin brother also graduated from the program last Saturday. “One of the highlights for me was having someone who wasn’t your parents to talk to about school without feeling the pressure of your parents’ feelings.”

Rowland heads off to Florida Gulf Coast University and plans to pursue an engineering degree.

From the first-person perspective, I think it’s a mutually beneficial relationship being a mentor to a student. I feel fulfilled knowing that I helped a student receive a full scholarship just by chatting with her weekly at the school. Take Stock in Children is such an important program because in addition to the scholarship, the program allowed Evelyn to visit colleges and be a part of workshops and seminars to broaden her horizons.

Cisneros heads off to Florida Atlantic University in June, and I will miss hearing the high school gossip and watching her grow into the woman she’s become in the past few years. Being a part of the process, from applying to colleges to comparing homecoming dresses, has been a beautiful experience. Luckily, I know I will have sent her to college with important “life skills” and will see her when she is visiting home, probably at the sandbar.

Cisneros graduated from the Take Stock program with some of her best friends last weekend. “Our friendship helps each one of us push each other,” she said. “We have always tried to motivate each other and remind each other of important due dates and study together.”

Graduate Sabrina Gaston met her mentor Sue Puskedra, who does estate sales in the Lower Keys, when she was in seventh grade. Six years later, Puskedra gets teary-eyed when she talks about Gaston leaving for college. “Who will I eat sushi with next year?” asked Puskedra, who added she will miss their weekly lunch meetings.

Gaston is heading off to Florida SouthWestern College in Fort Myers with her Take Stock in Children scholarship. “I am so fortunate to have Sue in my life not only as my mentor, but as a friend,” said Gaston. “I am an open book with her, and she has taught me many life lessons that will follow me throughout my life.”

The two had similar backgrounds growing up, which helped with their connection. “I can’t believe how much Sabrina has flourished since I met her,” said Puskedra.

HAPPY TRAILS, MR. HAWK Bird center releases broad-winged Hawk

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center released a broadwinged hawk at Dagney Johnson State Park on May 18.

The hawk was rescued on April 30 from Ocean Reef club where hospital workers found the bird in the middle of the road with internal bleeding and head trauma. The Bird Center’s five-person hospital team helped the bird recover with a regimen of Vitamin K. The bird center is asking locals to be on the lookout for baby birds. Every year from April to August many native and migratory bird species hatch and rear their young in the Keys. The number of birds under the care of the center increases dramatically then. The bird center currently has more than 30 wild birds in its care.
