According to Bernadette Restivo, who just announced her candidacy for Fantasy Fest Queen, quality of life is the biggest issue.

“Parks, schools, and services are super important.” She’s been in Key West for the past three years, moving from Tavernier.

Cindy Benson wants someone who thinks out of the box. “We don’t need old school ideas,” she said. “We want forward thinking.”

Kim Cournoyer said if you’re a mom, then you think health care and schools, but “I am personally all about equality in the workplace.” She added, “and, don’t be a dumbass and don’t lie.”

“I want someone who is going to do the things that we ask them to,” said Dee Johnson. “I want to get a response when I ask for something.” She then spilled the beans on all the people she didn’t want to see in office.

“I don’t think it’s a female vs. male thing,” said Robin J. Wood. “I think it’s doing what’s best for the community and having candidates who follow through with their campaign promises.”

eople who live in the Keys might know how to sit back and relax more than others throughout the country, but not when a major disaster hits.

They spring into action and fix problems fast, oftentimes the problems of others before their own. And those who want to be part of the solution in future disasters made it clear to county officials on May 21: they’re ready.

“We need you,” said Monroe County Emergency Management Director Marty Senterfitt.

About 50 people, mostly from Big Pine Key and Marathon, attended the first public meeting at Marathon Government Center ahead of creating the Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps, or MERC. It came as a suggestion from the county’s task force to revamp the reentry process.

“It doesn’t have to be a hurricane,” Senterfitt said, citing examples like the need for volunteers in the past to spread information about Zika virus, New World screwworm or even to help with the logistics of the Big Pine Key wildfires last month.

“Whatever it is, we need help,” he said.

Members of MERC would take part in Community Emergency Response Training, CERT, which is 32 hours of training for dealing with a disaster.

“We’re 10 days away from hurricane season. How soon can you start?” asked Tommy Ryan. Ryan is a Big Pine Key resident and candidate for County Commission.

“I’m ready to engage immediately, but my question is how can we do it efficiently?” Senterfitt said, adding the CERT training is supposed to be 40 hours long and he’s compressed it to 32 with the goal to train trainers first.

Those who were at the meeting Monday night will be emailed, and Senterfitt is relying on people to spread the word so classes can start as soon as possible. The goal is to have 20 to 30 people in each four-hour class with classes spread throughout the Keys.

“I’ve had people say that MERC members will only use it to come back into the Keys early and go take care of their own homes,” he said. “I’m good with that because the CERT concept is, you come in and help yourself first, then help your neighborhood, then help your community, then help your county.”

CERT sessions will entail first aid, what it means to be truly self-sufficient and how to help someone in a major trauma situation.

Graduates of CERT will be given what Senterfitt called a “golden ticket of reentry” which will go on the dashboard of your car and grant reentry after roads and bridges are cleared and safe.

ou haven’t lost your hearing or your mind. When the Sunset Green fills up on Friday and Saturday nights — May 2526 — the mob will be dancing to the sounds only they can hear on wireless headsets. And while the concept of “silent disco” is well established on the mainland, it’s a new experience for Key West.

“It’s cool visually,” said Anthony Vandaley. He’s in charge of entertainment for Keys Collection, the four hotels in Key West including the two that share the “green,” or lawn between 24 North and The Gates hotels. It is a surreal sight — hundreds of people dancing energetically, in almost total silence.

The event includes Miami-based DJs on three different, color-coded stages — DJ Mykel, DJ Art-A-Funk and DJ Tillery James. Party-goers rent headsets for $10 each, and then can tune into red, green or blue channels.

“They’ll be playing three different genres — hip hop, house music and techno,” Vandaley said.

While this is a first for the Keys, it’s been around since the mid-’90s. In the U.S., the band Flaming Lips is given credit for a concert in Texas where they distributed FM radio receivers and headphones to the audience. About the same time, a U.K. arts festival did the same thing with a huge video screen and personal, portable radios.

The Silent Disco concept is also a work-around for sound curfews. The quiet doesn’t disturb the neighbors.

“In fact, the event runs a little later, until 11 p.m.,” Vandaley said.

Scattered around the property will be some full liquor bars and a beer station. Organizers will distribute glow sticks and guests are encouraged to apply glow paint liberally, best seen under the black lights also set up about the property.

Thomas Ladd of Miami’s Sounds Good Entertainment is organizing the silent disco, just as he has for backstage parties at Lollapalooza where there are multiple stages, as well as smaller parties staged on beaches in New England.

Sure, it might rain. If the weather is really bad, the party will move inside to the hotel lobby.

“But I’ve been to plenty of good parties in the rain,” said Ladd. “Plus, people will be sweating already from all the dancing. It’s a different style rave.”

The party runs from 8 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, May 25 and 26 at the Sunset Green on North Roosevelt Blvd. in Key West. There is no admission, no minimum age.

June 5 commission meeting could push Peary Court plans ahead

S

heriff’s deputies, restaurant managers, electricians, teachers and professors – those are all job titles of people living in Key West’s Peary Court.

Those are also job titles falling into an income category which county officials have said again and again needs affordable housing the most.

When $12.5 million of County Land Authority funds were approved for the Cornfeld Group, which bought Peary Court in 2016, its goal was to turn a portion of 157 twobedroom, two-bath units into one-bedroom, one-bath units and create even more affordable housing.

That’s still the goal.

“It’s a quick and simple renovation,” said Jeff Cornfeld.

An upcoming meeting of the City Commission June 5 could push the Cornfeld Group’s plans forward.

The delay has been procedural, according to city Director of Planning Patrick Wright.

When Cornfeld bought the 24-acre Peary Court plot in Old Town for $60 million in 2016, 48 affordable housing units came with it. The prior owner had a development plan to build 48 affordable housing units, which was scrapped when Cornfeld bought the property.

“There haven’t been delays, just a process which involves an amendment to the approved plan at the City Commission level,” Wright said.

“We have great plans for Peary Court, and we’ve done good things there,” said Jeff Cornfeld.

The $12.5 million incentive deed restricted the entire property affordable and future development in perpetuity.

“We do not believe that any rent reduction to any tenant would be a violation of our deed restriction, even if that rent reduction happens to cross over into a lower AMI category, provided that the lease complies in all other respects.

These monthly rent reductions ranged from $300 to $400 per household,” Cornfeld said.

The highest rent paid at Peary Court is $2,774, while the majority rent in the range of $2,300 to $2,400.

The prior owner had a development plan to build 48 affordable housing units, which was scrapped when Cornfeld Group bought the property.

The Cornfeld group reported that of the 157 households at Peary Court, three have a roommate living with a married couple, which complies with income limits and frees up other apartments throughout Key West. Ten apartments are composed of roommates. Thirty-eight families comply with income limits due to marital or domestic partner status, and 106 families (including singleparent households) comply with income limits regardless of marital status and family size, he said.

The City Commission meets at 6 p.m. June 5 at City Hall.

ome 70 miles southwest of Key West are the Dry Tortugas, where two lighthouses have been erected. The first, built in 1825, was constructed on Garden Key. Because that structure was eventually deemed too short and too dim to light such a treacherous stretch of water adequately, the lighthouse on Loggerhead Key was constructed. Garden Key is most famously known as the home of Fort Jefferson, the largest completely brick structure in North America. The fort was originally designed to protect the shipping lanes between New Orleans and New York. Work began on the fort shortly after United States Army Lieutenant Horatio Wright first landed on the Tortugas in 1846.

When the walls were completed, they encompassed 11 of Garden

Key’s 16 total acres. The variegated brick armament took about 16 million bricks to build.

A

n attorney with a passion for words, Solange Ritchie began writing thrillers in her “spare time” (weekends, early mornings before work) with a mission.

Struck by the lack of powerful women as lead characters, she set out to create her own: Dr. Catherine Powers, FBI Special Investigator.

In her debut novel, “The Burning Man” (2015), Ritchie tested the strength of her “Cat” against a formidable adversary: a twisted serial killer.

In “Firestorm,” her newest novel, Ritchie brings back Dr. Catherine Powers to confront her worst fear — exposing her young son, once again, to danger — and an all-too-familiar demon. As the murders mount, fires rage across Southern California, with increasing intensity and terrifying frequency. With horrors and tragedies swirling around her, Cat grapples to keep a grip on her emotions, assert her authority, and stay mentally sharp — while unaware of the warped avenger who is watching and waiting to claim her.

“Many people who read the galley copy told me they felt like they were really in the fire. That’s a real compliment to a writer,” said Ritchie. The observations were formed first-hand from recent fires in California and the obstacles firefighters faced – including steep narrow streets and Santa Ana winds.

Born in Jamaica to a Jamaican father and a French mother, Ritchie immigrated to the U.S. and went on to graduate from St.

“I still have lots of high school friends and family friends living on the island,” she said.

As a lawyer in Southern California, she was dubbed “the Case Saver” for handling intense legal motions that either make or break a case, especially in the areas of business, labor, and employment law. In 2014, she received the State Bar of California’s Solo and Small Firm Section’s highest award, the Myer J. Sankary Attorney of the Year Award. When Solange was just 37 years old, her first husband died due to gross medical negligence.

She began writing creatively as a way to deal with the stress of his hospitalization and death. She now lives in South Florida.

Ritchie said the first novel was the most difficult to write, but the second and third in the same series came at “lightning speed.”

She’s also working on a standalone novel, tentatively titled “Fiona’s Box,” that is loosely based on the Keys’ own Robert the Doll.

“It pushes the edge of noir, like a southern gothic horror novel. The premise is that the curse only affects some people, but as it is passed from person to person the object gains strength to control people,” she said.

obby and Michelle Mongelli have played their role in preserving the rustic allure of Stock Island, while offering some of the most soughtout eateries in the Keys. From Hogfish Bar & Grill to Roostica, the notable couple are pioneers of a revitalization movement on Stock Island.

The pair’s newest contribution comes in the form of a food truck packed full of authentic Mexican offerings. No Way Jose, a pop-up food truck tucked behind Roostica, was created by the Mongellis and chef Jose Izquidero — who has worked alongside the Mongellis as chef at HogFish.

And the Tampiquena skirt steak is a can’t-miss, fused with avocado, queso fresco, corn tortilla, habanero salsa and jicama.

“We are constantly challenging ourselves to offer something that is hard to find in Key West,” said Michelle Mongelli. “The experience we are creating is an alternative to the craziness of downtown. We cater to locals and believe in ‘eating local.’ And I believe it’s important to have a place where people can bring the entire family.”

No Way Jose is just the beginning of the Mongellis’ vision for a new experience along MacDonald Ave. By August, they hope to move

No Way Jose beside Roostica along the front of the building, while adding spaces for pottery arts (which will cater to kids), organic fruits and veggie offerings, local artists, live music and a food court for outdoor dining.

“I see the future of Stock Island as a smaller version of Wynwood in Miami,” said Bobby. “We want to create an atmosphere that preserves the ‘old Key West’ feel for families, food and art.”

If No Way Jose’s kickoff was an indicator, then Mongelli’s vision will be well received. More than 800 people showed up for the grand opening and the food truck continues to host a steady flow of patrons from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For now, the eatery is closed on Sundays and Mondays, but the hours will inevitably change as the experience evolves.

T

he Florida Keys real estate market has momentum after Hurricane Irma.

“Everyone thought we were going to have a ton of distressed properties,” said David Grego, president of the Middle and Lower Keys Real Estate Association. “The truth is, whatever was available got bought up pretty quickly.”

The same sentiment is echoed throughout the Florida Keys chain. There wasn’t enough inventory before the storm, and there still isn’t afterwards.

“We are still showing an all-time low on listed properties for our inventory and our average days on the market is 112, well below previous years,” said Jo Ann Cook, broker for RE/MAX in Marathon. “We definitely have more buyers right now than we do properties to sell.”

Based on the data collected by the real estate association, the Middle Keys market has stabilized after the hurricane. The number of new listings this January was 146, compared to last year’s 224.

Reinforcing the lack of inventory and motivated buyers, 76 listings were sold this January compared to 57 from last year.

“We are selling more properties than are being replenished by new listing inventory,” Cook said.

Regarding distressed properties, “we are still getting a few calls every day, but there are very few on the market right now and people are not doing fire sales on these listings,” said Cook.

Cook anticipates an active selling season based on the number of inquiries and web hits being received compared to last year. “Last year we had a very strong July and August for sales and I am hoping for the same this year,” she said.

“I believe the continued story in the Keys and nationwide for 2018 will be fewer homes available among strong buyer demand, which places upward pressure on home prices.”

Patti Stanley, broker associate at Moorings Realty in Islamorada, said it’s a positive seller’s market right now. Last month, she had four closings in 12 days. She said from a homeowner, agent, and construction standpoint, the most frustrating thing is the permitting process. “Some are staying away from properties that need work because the process takes so long,” she said.

She added that it has been a long time since a storm has been thrown into this market.

“The strong survived,” she said referring to the houses with no damage. “That gives buyers a lot of confidence when looking for properties.”

Grego said there were plenty of differences between Hurricane Wilma and Hurricane Irma. “In 2005, the market was a lot different and already on a decline,” he said at a recent Marathon Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

“It wasn’t until 2013 that the market stopped dropping.”

Nationwide, the inventory of homes on the market has fallen to the lowest point in the last decade and home sales are down 3 percent.

Will Langley, principal broker at Berkshire Hathaway Knight and Gardner in Key West and president of Key West Association of Realtors, said the statistics are very interesting when looking at them island by island. “You can absolutely correlate the market activity to the impact of Hurricane Irma,” he said.

For Key West, it continues to be a story of low supply and high demand. Total residential properties on the market are down 9 percent year over year for Key West, whereas for Big Pine Key, the inventory is up 11 percent. “In a typical year, these numbers trend closer together,” said Langley. “The good news on Big Pine is that while the supply is up, so is the demand.”

Another important number monitored is the average sale price. The average sale price for Big Pine is down from $420,061 last year to $348,471 this year. In most other areas, the average sale price is up.

Cudjoe Key is up the most significant, followed by Summerland Key, Geiger Key, Sugarloaf, Saddle Bunch and Key West. Key West falls just about even with last year’s average sale price of $782,773.

Interest rates also have an effect on the real estate market. The average interest rate for a 30-year fixed loan is 4.75 percent, up from 4.125 percent this time last year. “We expect interest rates to rise, but historically they remain low,” said Langley.

tand in front of a mirror in the dark, say “thirteen hundred” out loud three times, and Monroe County’s ghost of affordable housing will appear to have a talk about the current crisis.

Joking aside, 1,300 is the number of new affordable housing permits directed from Gov. Rick Scott for the Florida Keys, announced just two weeks ago.

In those two weeks, the mood among county officials has taken a hesitant turn, while others, especially those rallying for more affordable housing, are asking, what’s the holdup?

County officials say it’s a threepronged problem, all relating to overdevelopment of the Keys. They say it will be a quality-of-life issue on top of a safety problem should there be a mass evacuation in the event of a hurricane.

People living in the eventually developed units would be required to evacuate earlier than the rest of the county, which would be difficult to enforce, officials say.

Accepting the units could also open the floodgates to more units coming for the Keys, thus the possibility of more development. These have all been cited as examples during Board of County Commission meetings.

“Those are all valid concerns,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein, who lauded the governor’s initiative as a solution for Monroe in its time of need. “These are optional, and if at the end of the day they don’t feel they’re needed, then they don’t have to accept them.

But I know there are a number of municipalities that do want to have this option. Anywhere I go, people talk about the housing crisis, so this is the state’s offer, one of hopefully many offers. They’re trying to be helpful in our time of need.”

At the same time, commissioners spend hours discussing what to do about the affordable housing crisis, which was bad enough before Hurricane Irma and has only worsened.

“None of us can find the employees that we need, and if we find them, they can’t [afford to] stay here,” said Rockland Key LLC developer Joe Walsh at the first emergency BOCC meeting about the 1,300 units.

He urged the county to accept the units in a show of taking control over its own destiny.

“Turning down an opportunity to add additional affordable housing, to me, is a bad first step in trying to address those takings issues,” Walsh said.

He was talking about what will happen when there is no more development allowed in the Keys after 2023, and who will pick up the tab for potential “taking” lawsuits as a result of the state-mandated ROGO, or rate of growth ordinance.

“We’ve heard over and over again Monroe County wants to be in charge of its own affairs, and Monroe County gets treated as if it’s not qualified to make its own decisions about what to do with development rights,” he said, adding the county could amend its comprehensive plan to “square the circle” in how those units will be used.

Marathon City Planner George Garrett said municipalities could potentially accept units from the state on their own. Marathon requested 300 from the state in November, yet each different municipality would qualify for up to 300, except for Key Colony Beach and Layton, which are eligible for 100.

County attorney Bob Shillinger said each city in Monroe has the opportunity to amend its own comprehensive plans to accept up to 300 of this “new breed of ROGOs.” “They can make their decisions independent of what the county decides to do with respect to its comprehensive plan,” he said.

If a municipality accepts some of the 1,300 units, can they be changed down the road from affordable units to market-rate development units? No, because the 1,300 units will be deedrestricted affordable, Garrett said.

What about the county’s 555 unallocated affordable housing units and 1,000 market-rate units it can distribute?

“The state created a rule for each of us (local governments) that indicated how many units we received after the last hurricane evacuation modeling. Within those rules, for example, the county is required to set aside a certain percentage of the units awarded as affordable ROGOs,” said Christine Hurley, assistant county administrator. “In reality, only DEO can approve a change of an affordable to market-rate units.”

“As Christine stated, a comprehensive plan change would be necessary to change that ratio. Such a proposed change would be submitted to DEO for approval or rejection,” Shillinger said.

The next step is for the Florida Cabinet to approve the 1,300-unit initiative.

“It’s my understanding the DEO and governor will be requesting this at the next cabinet meeting on June 13,” Hurley said.

The County Commission has delayed accepting the 1,300 units until more details are available from the state.

T

he Monroe County Education Foundation celebrated the accomplishments of 58 Take Stock in Children senior scholars on May 19 at the annual graduation ceremony. With a collective weighted grade point average of 3.69, two-thirds of this year’s class will attend a Florida university, while others will go out of state or into the military.

With its mission is to provide students with the financial resources to attend college, the Monroe County Education Foundation board continues to focus on providing students with the tools and skills necessary to complete a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Program Coordinator Chuck Licis highlighted the importance of Take Stock’s college and career readiness efforts: “This year’s class is ready to take the next step, to pursue their college goals and career dreams.”

Each student is paired with a mentor throughout his or her time in the program. The mentor meets with the student on campus weekly.

Most students joined the program in seventh grade.

Graduate Sabrina Gaston met her mentor Sue Puskedra, who does estate sales in the Lower Keys, when she was in seventh grade. Six years later, Puskedra gets teary-eyed when she talks about Gaston leaving for college. “Who will I eat sushi with next year?” asked Puskedra, who added she will miss their weekly lunch meetings.

Gaston is heading off to Florida SouthWestern College in Fort Myers with her Take Stock in Children scholarship. “I am so fortunate to have Sue in my life not only as my mentor, but as a friend,” said Gaston. “I am an open book with her, and she has taught me many life lessons that will follow me throughout my life.”

The two had similar backgrounds growing up, which helped with their connection. “I can’t believe how much Sabrina has flourished since I met her,” said Puskedra.

From the first-person perspective, I think it’s a mutually beneficial relationship being a mentor to a student. I feel fulfilled knowing that I helped a student receive a full scholarship just by chatting with her weekly at the school. Take Stock in Children is such an important program because in addition to the scholarship, the program allowed Evelyn to visit colleges and be a part of workshops and seminars to broaden her horizons.

Cisneros heads off to Florida Atlantic University in June, and I will miss hearing the high school gossip and watching her grow into the woman she’s become in the past few years. Being a part of the process, from applying to colleges to comparing homecoming dresses, has been a beautiful experience. Luckily, I know I will have sent her to college with important “life skills” and will see her when she is visiting home, probably at the sandbar.

Cisneros graduated from the Take Stock program with some of her best friends last weekend. “Our friendship helps each one of us push each other,” she said. “We have always tried to motivate each other and remind each other of important due dates and study together.”

Starting with Take Stock in Children and coming from a family of five children, Chandler Rowland says the scholarship takes a lot of burden off his family. “This gives my parents a little piece of mind,” he said.

He started the program in ninth grade with his mentor Terry Abel. “Terry taught me a lot of things, most importantly to be determined and willing to work hard to achieve my goals,” said Rowland, whose twin brother also graduated from the program last Saturday. “One of the highlights for me was having someone who wasn’t your parents to talk to about school without feeling the pressure of your parents’ feelings.”

Rowland heads off to Florida Gulf Coast University and plans to pursue an engineering degree.

ost Monroe County schools were constructed during a period when educators and families valued “openness” — campuses that felt inclusive and encouraging; the opposite of incarceration. And while many have gates at the front of the school, the sides and the rear of the building are wide open. All three Monroe County high schools, for example, are located on the water, with only a fringe of mangroves separating the campus from the ocean.

“Perimeter fences weren’t something parents or educators wanted 10 years ago,” said Pat Lefere, the school district’s executive director of operations and planning.

The Monroe County School District and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are conducting security assessments at all district schools before moving on to Keys charter schools. The examinations will include what physical safety measures can be taken immediately.

“There’s not a lot of lowhanging fruit that would be visible to the person watching from the outside,” said Lefere, “but thanks to our taxpayers and the half-penny tax that can be used for safety and security, we have the financial ability to make some improvements.”

School district begins comprehensive review of safety UPGRADES

“We’ve spent $500,000 in the last five years on security upgrades — perimeter security, fencing projects and working towards single point of access on all our campuses,” said Lefere. “For example, starting this summer we will be replacing cameras at the three high schools to replace the older systems with ones that have more capability and a clearer, better image.”

Patty Thompson is the director of school safety at Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s a new position, established in the last few months. She said part of the assessment process will cover how existing security measures can be aligned with new technology.

“We’re considering everything from the low tech — like rubber door stops or parking stickers — to electronic doors that have a master override,” Thompson said. On the mainland, some schools require students to carry “smart” ID cards that can, for example, reveal their current location or give them access to only certain areas.

Metal detectors, Lefere said, are probably not the solution for Monroe County.

“If you have a metal detector, you also need an X-ray machine to screen the bags.”

Lefere said that could require two employees, one to handle each function.

What the assessments will accomplish, most likely, will be a more standardized plan for all schools. What happens at any particular school, currently, generally involves decision making at the school level.

For example, at most schools, office receptionists let parents – and visitors they recognize – through the doors without an ID check. Strangers usually must go through an identification process.

“There’s no mandate on that from the district level,” Lefere said.

Another example of customized security is the “Text Tips” program at Sugarloaf School — developed by a parent — where students can text safety concerns to a telephone number. The anonymous tips could include topics like threats of violence, drugs on campus, bullying, or even thoughts of suicide. This week the district announced a plan to roll out the Text Tips program for every district school.

It’s likely students and parents and teachers will all deal with additional security measures, especially those outlined by the state legislation, when kids return to school next fall. There will be more security gear, new protocols, and more police presence in the form of a fulltime school resource officer at every school.

In recent weeks, there’s been much discussion about school resource officers (SROs) in Keys schools. The only three district schools without a full-time officer serve only elementary education age children. But, after a May 8 school board meeting in Marathon at which parents lamented the lack of security at Stanley Switlik Elementary, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay added an officer for the last two weeks of school at the expense of MCSO. Two elementary schools in Key West are staffed part-time by officers from the Key West Police Department.

Next year that will change, with the enactment of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act – state legislation in response to the tragedy at a Florida school that claimed 17 lives in February. It requires the district to assign at least one officer to each school, designate a “school safety specialist” to serve as liaison, and have a threat assessment team at each school.

The cost of an SRO including salary, equipment, training and benefits is estimated at $100,000 per year in the Keys.

According to Superintendent Mark Porter, the sheriff’s office bears about 65 percent of the SRO cost for officers it provides, and the Key West Police Department bears about 35 percent.

The state legislation sets aside $97 million to staff officers at each school but it’s unclear how much will go to each district, and the Keys school board has drafted a millage rate referendum question to appear on the August ballot. It could generate up to $1.8 million to help pay for the SRO program in the Keys.

“If we can get the referendum passed to cover SROs, or supplement paying for SROs, we can move those resources over to mental health,” Porter said.

Monroe County School Board member Mindy Conn said, “Mental health is the first step to safety and security. We need psychologists, social workers. Personally I will be pushing for more of that on all our campuses. Treating the individual is our best protection from having some type of tragedy.”

Team Hang On slays at lionfish tournament

R

ecords were broken over the weekend at the fourth annual Lionfish World Championship in Pensacola, and Marathon’s lionfish queen Rachel Bowman was there to contribute.

Team Hang On, composed of Bowman, St. Petersburg resident Meaghan Faletti, Nikkie Cox and Grayson Shepard of Apalachicola, caught 1,115 lionfish while diving 37 miles off Pensacola.

They use what’s called a Zookeeper, a capturing device, which can net up to 80 pounds of fish in one dive.

Keys Fisheries-sponsored Team Hang On came in second place at the tournament, turning in 1,115 of the spiny invasives. Last year, the girls and Shepard came in first with 926 fish.

The tournament, held May 19 and 20, was part of Pensacola’s Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day Festival.

Lionfish have no natural predators, largely due to their array of venomous spines. They eat voraciously and breed constantly, threatening local fish species and the reef at large.

“We had heavy seas and lightning on the first day, and then the second day was picture perfect,” Bowman said.

“That’s obviously why the numbers of

this tournament are so high – it’s a lot easier to dive when you don’t have a small watercraft advisory.”

The turnout was phenomenal, said organizer Andy Ross, adding that 99 people competed in the event and together brought in 9,619 fish.

In first place was Destin-based team Florida Man, led by Alex Fogg, which hauled in a record-shattering 2,403 fish.

“I’d like to go on the record and say Alex is the Michael Jordan of lionfishing and we are merely the LeBron.

The only reason I ever win anything is because Alex Fogg chooses not to participate,” Bowman said. “He’s done more for lionfishing than anyone I’ve ever known.”

Whole Foods is a big buyer of lionfish, which is where most of the tournament fish went.

Faletti is a former biological scientist with the FWC and Cox is an environmental specialist with the state Department of Environmental Protection.

he rivalry between the Key West Conchs and Marathon High Dolphins was on full display on May 20 in Key West at the spring exhibition game.

“Healthy rivalry” were the words of Key West coach John Hughes, who said the entire purpose behind the annual game is to add a little spice to spring practice.

“That spring game adds a little juice, especially when it’s Marathon and Key West,” he said. “It just makes sense to keep it local with Marathon.”

Marathon coach Mac Childress agreed.

There was no score kept, but each team got 36 plays on offense and 36 plays on defense during the informal scrimmage.

Key West scored five times against Marathon, which scored twice.

“I thought we competed exceptionally hard and I think our younger guys

got a good taste of varsity experience,” Childress said. “Our older guys really played physical football, which was a definite positive for our team. When we play teams our same size we’re going to impose our will.”

The focus now for the Dolphins will be the weight room for the rest of the summer.

“I want them in there three to five times a week, focusing on eating right, getting healthy and building that brotherhood,” Childress said, adding the first scheduled game is Aug. 24 at home against Miami Christian School.

As for the Conchs, their first scheduled game is Aug. 16 against the Chiefs of Cardinal Gibbons, a 5A team.

Key West is a Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A team and is also in the South Florida Football Conference.

Marathon is an independent team in the South Florida Football Conference but plays some of the same teams as Key West.
