Since Hurricane Irma, 59 surveys by Texas A&M University estimate the Key deer population at about 573 individuals (confidence interval 441-743 deer) on Big Pine and No Name Keys, and more surveys are scheduled in May. After the screwworm infestation was contained in March of 2017, the herd was about 870 individuals.

onroe County Commissioners got the ball rolling Wednesday to create a special taxing district in the Middle Keys, the proceeds of which will go to rebuilding Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon.

There has been support from local municipalities since April, when representatives from Baptist Health South Florida made the rounds in Marathon and Key Colony Beach to broach the subject. Baptist bought the hospital last year; it was destroyed by Hurricane Irma.

“I came in here today to vote in favor of establishing an MSTU (municipal service taxing unit) to avoid any further delay and loss to Baptist Hospital,” Commissioner George Neugent said Wednesday.

According to details discussed at a Marathon Council meeting, the goal is to raise about $10 million over the next 10 years, with a .5 mill or lower tax rate. On a nonhomesteaded property assessed at $300,000, that would mean a tax increase of about $150 a year.

The proposed taxing district would likely extend from MM 47 to MM 63, encompassing Key Colony Beach and Duck Key, but the details need fine tuning.

The groundwork is being laid for the facility’s rebuilding, which will cost nearly $40 million. At the same time the hospital continues to lose about $1 million a month on top of the $24 million worth of debt it incurred since buying the hospital.

Neugent made a motion to direct staff to prepare two different resolutions necessary to create the taxing district. One would be a year-by-year agreement necessary to renew, and the other option is a 10-year maximum agreement.

For there to be a multi-year taxing district, there would have to be a referendum, the soonest being the Aug. 28 primary election ballot.

“The concern is the November ballot is going to be so chock full of questions and there will be ballot fatigue, so it’s better for this to not get lost in the November ballot,” said county attorney Bob Shillinger, adding staff could have the resolutions ready by the June meeting. “We can still proceed down both paths and you can make a final decision in June. You’re setting it up for a future taxing year, so even if you did it year-to-year it wouldn’t go into place until the tax bills for next year are collected.”

There is a rented field hospital on the grounds of Fishermen’s at the moment, which will be removed July 13 and replaced with a custom, hard-sided inpatient temporary hospital to be delivered and erected at a cost of $3 million.

According to Jay Hershoff, chairman of the Mariners and Fishermen’s Hospital Foundations, before it even assumed ownership, Baptist provided a $3 million line of credit to the cash-strapped hospital. Then, when it assumed ownership, the first move was to pay off a $5.8 million mortgage held by CenterState Bank. Then it spent $4.1 million to pay off vendors, including the previous management firm, Quorum, that was owed back pay.

ON A ‘MISSION’ Styx weathers changes, keeps playing

W

ith a new album – number 16 – due out in a matter of weeks, Styx will perform in Key West on Thursday, May 17.

The album, “The Mission,” is envisioned as a chronicle of the first manned mission to Mars in the year 2033. Songs include “Gone Gone Gone,” “Radio Silence,” “Locomotive” and “Red Storm,” among others.

The band spent almost two years off and on working on the music.

Reflecting on the album, James “JY” Young – who shares lead vocal duties with Lawrence Gowan and Tommy Shaw – said, “Tommy likes to say, ‘From a tiny acorn a giant oak doth grow.’ … It shows how we work as a team. The skill level of the band has allowed us to go do things we just couldn’t have otherwise in the past.”

“Working on ‘The Mission’ was so fun and so easy,” said Jim Scott, who mixed the album at his Plyrz Studio in Nashville. “It was a very pure and simple mostly analog recording, and I mixed it the same way — no samples, and no shenanigans. Each time I listened back to it, I found each song could have other meanings and images separate from the overall space saga.”

Founded in Chicago in 1972, Styx was the first band in rock history to have four consecutive certified multimillion-selling albums: 1977’s “The Grand Illusion,” 1978’s “Pieces of Eight,” 1979’s “Cornerstone” and 1981’s “Paradise Theatre.”

The band has weathered changes

both internal and external in its decades of existence.

In 1984, after the successes of the late ’70s and early ’80s, members went their own ways for a time. After reuniting, Young and Shaw wanted to keep the band’s momentum intact, and they began to discuss how to do just that. But to move ahead, they had to part ways with founding member Dennis DeYoung — the man behind some of the band’s most indelible hits, including “Lady,” “The Grand Illusion,” and “Come Sail Away” — because, the band says, the collective chemistry had changed.

“Dennis led the charge to the top of the charts,” said Young. “He’s an incredible singer, a motivated writer who wrote some great lyrics, and one very strong keyboard player. He just didn’t want to be part of a democracy. We truly wish him well. We did some incredible work together, but there’s no basis for us to work together again.”

The band has played more than 100 shows a year every year since 1999.

On stage, the band is devoted to artistry. “We learned the art of theater from David Bowie,” said bassist Chuck Panozzo.

“We opened for him on his first American tour at Performance Hall in Kansas City (on Oct. 15, 1972). When he entered the stage, it was such a mindblowing experience.”

“We just want to keep on doing this,” said Shaw. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be the soundtrack to it. It’s like a photo album

When the Overseas Highway formally opened in 1928, it was still a work in progress. In order to complete the drive from Miami to Key West it was necessary to take a ride aboard an automobile ferry, bridging a 41-mile gap in the highway that separated Lower Matecumbe from No Name Key. During construction of the highway, also known as State Road 4A, roads had been created in the Upper and Lower Keys, but not in the Middle Keys. The building of roads in the Marathon area, as well as two additional ferry landings, began in the early 1930s. Ferry landings built on Grassy Key and on the Gulf side of Hog Key shortened the highway gap from 41 miles to two shorter trips spanning a total of 28 miles. While those driving from Miami to Key West now spent less time riding on an automobile ferry, they spent just as long sitting in lines awaiting the arrival of the next ferry.

ey Largo School Principal Laura Lietaert said every year she brings the new teachers together to go over the “intruder” drill before they meet with the kids.

“It’s difficult. There are tears,” Lietaert said, explaining the new teachers are often sickened by the idea of someone deliberately hurting children. “I tell them they can do what they have to do, for as long as they have to. Then we dry our tears and go out to talk to the children.”

Lietaert’s observations illustrate the difficulty of discussing school security as it regards an active shooter situation. It’s an emotional subject for everybody — administrators, teachers, law enforcement, parents and kids. Bringing everyone together for a cohesive plan to respond to the danger, while taking into account everyone’s responsibility and understanding of the situation, is a monumental undertaking. The impetus is the school shooting that claimed 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and the resulting legislation of the same name that covers everything from school resource officers to mental health to gun purchase laws.

Most of it is taking place behind closed doors, for reasons of security.

“If we announce what we are doing, there’s not a lot of safety and security in that,” said school board member Mindy Conn. “Some of our measures will be obvious and other things we are currently doing you may not notice if you are walking around school.”

School and law enforcement officials are, however, open to discussing broad objectives that must be accomplished over the summer.

School district begins comprehensive review of safety

Step one is to conduct detailed investigations of every district school before the end of the school year, and then charter schools.

In the Keys, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will take the lead.

Patty Thompson is the director of school safety at MCSO. It’s a new position, established in the last few months. Thompson is a former FBI agent and then security consultant with experience in exactly this field. She recently completed the security assessment at Florida Keys Community College.

Sugarloaf School was the first to undergo an examination in April.

“The public tends to think that the process just involves getting a cap gun and firing off a couple rounds. That’s the last step in a lengthy process,” Thompson said. It starts, she said, with interviewing everyone from the leadership team to the students.

Then law enforcement develops measurable training.

“The next step is tabletop exercises, where we work through it notionally, and it ends with a full-field training exercise,” she said.

Thompson will make her recommendations, but the final decisions about what to implement — such as an active shooter drill that calls for students to participate — will be up to the school district. The school district and sheriff’s office won’t be working alone. Thompson said she plans to include the Key West Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, FBI, Department of Juvenile Justice, State Attorney’s Office, Emergency Management and even Fish and Wildlife Commission officers.

“Everyone is chipping in. Agencies have different agendas, but if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it is this,” she said.

According to the district, the assessments are nothing new. However, they have been expanded in the wake of the Parkland shooting in February.

Thompson and Pat Lefere, the school district’s executive director of operations and planning, said the training for students and administrators will follow the “run, hide, fight” protocol.

“The response tactics in active shooter situations continue to evolve and there’s not one answer. Lockdown is not always the answer. ‘Run, hide, fight’ gives three options,” Thompson said. “We can teach the criteria to make the best choice in each circumstance.”

Lefere said about half of district students received the training this year. He said district leaders are engaging school officials and having interactive discussions; they are doing the tabletop exercises.

“But what the staff and teachers take away from the discussion is different for every particular location,” he said. “It’s all scenario dependent.”

In the 2017-18 school year, Key Largo School conducted an intruder drill that included a movement exercise for the students. (That school has been practicing intruder drills for eight years.) At Marathon High School, the freshman watched a video and discussed it afterward. The district is developing tiered training.

“The high school plan is a lot different from the kindergarten plan,” said Lefere.

gt. Spencer Bryan was greeting children on the morning of May 14 at Stanley Switlik Elementary. Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said he will be putting a school resource officer at the school in Marathon for the last two weeks of the school year.

“I am doing this out of the sheriff’s budget because it is the right thing to do,” Ramsay said, “although it is technically the responsibility of the Monroe County School District to finance this.”

Every district school in Monroe County has full-time school resource officers (SROs), with the exception of elementary-only facilities. Poinciana and Gerald Adams elementary schools in Key West are policed part-time by officers of the Key West Police Department. The school district has employment agreements with both law enforcement agencies to staff the schools, and expenses are shared.

On May 8, about 60 parents attended a school board meeting at Marathon High School to advocate for more security at Stanley Switlik School. At the meeting, parents discuss the PTO initiative of inviting first responders in the area to visit school as often as possible. Since the plea, representatives of the sheriff’s office, county and city fire rescue, Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Commission have all made a point of visiting campus at the beginning of the day, lunch or recess … even the P.E. class.

Now, Stanley Switlik Elementary School will have a sheriff’s deputy on campus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. No single officer has been assigned.

Rather, it will be staffed by deputies who rotate in and out of the position for the remainder of the school year.

Next year, Monroe County School District will be implementing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, a legislative response to the Parkland school shooting tragedy in February 2018. How the state, school and law enforcement agencies will fund the required changes is unclear. Although funds have been set aside at the state level to pay for a resource officer in every Florida school — $97.5 million — how those funds will be allocated among districts has yet to be determined.

TWO SIDES TO 1,300-UNIT COIN County stalls on whether to accept units

There’s potentially a boatload of affordable housing units coming from the state to Monroe County, discussed at a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners May 10 and again at the May 16 meeting in Key West.

But not everyone is on board, and it was said several times that the devil’s in the details, which have yet to be released. No official stance was taken by commissioners.

Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley traveled to Tallahassee on May 15 to meet with Department of Economic Opportunity staff about 1,300 new building permits for workforce housing throughout the Florida Keys.

County Attorney Bob Shillinger told commissioners Hurley was unable to make the May 16 meeting but spoke on her behalf.

“It’s up to us if we want to participate and what parameters would be placed on the units. They look forward to working with us to understand how we can fine-tune it to our specific needs,” he said.

“It sounds to me like none of our questions were answered,” said Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

The commissioners went back and forth for more than an hour about whether to accept the units, with the tone being mostly geared toward all the reasons the county should not accept them.

Those in favor of the units cite them as a possible solution to the Keyswide dire housing situation.

Those who oppose the move say it will be impossible to evacuate so many residents in a reasonable time should another hurricane head for the Keys.

The need for timely evacuation of residents from Monroe County is part of the reason development is restricted in the first place.

“The real issue is quality of life and how many people can this fragile chain of islands hold?” said Carruthers.

“We all know if we build on every lot in this county, I doubt there is a person in this room who would want to live here. We are facing some rather large issues,” said county Mayor David Rice at last week’s meeting. “Is this helping after the hurricane or setting a precedent for providing an unlimited number of permits by the state instead of coming up with their share of this huge cost we will have as a result of the ROGO?” He was talking about what will happen when there is no more development allowed in the Keys after 2023, and who will pick up the tab for potential “taking” lawsuits as a result of the state-mandated ROGO, the rate of growth ordinance.

“Bob, have you and Christine been lying to us about this liability we’re facing in 2023?” asked Commissioner George Neugent.

“No,” Schillinger said. “I think if you go back and look at all the tapes you’ll find plenty of instances when I tell you not every person who has a vacant parcel will have a valid takings claim. We may have to defend suits and believe we’ll be victorious in many of them.”

Carruthers asked whether the county has to accept the 1,300 units.

“They’ve asked us to express the position,” Schillinger said.

“If there is any way we can take these we should take them,” Neugent said.

The commission agreed last week it will be a long time, possibly years, before the 1,300 units are available to municipalities, seeing as how each will have to amend its comprehensive plan to allow for them.

The county has 555 unallocated affordable housing units and 1,000 market-rate units it can distribute. The various municipalities such as Village of Islamorada and City of Marathon also have some, but not as many. It’s a challenge to know exactly how many affordable units are needed — developers request the building rights but some are returned to the county if the deal falls through.

DEO also will submit its 2017 Florida Keys Area of Critical Concern Annual Report to the Cabinet at its June 13 meeting.

“We can stand in support, stand in opposition or stand silent and let the municipalities take their own course,” Shillinger said.

Longtime Stirrup Key and Marathon resident Barbara Fae Michie, born in 1938, died on April 30, 2018.

My sister Barbara passed away after struggling with prolonged stressrelated issues, which took the final toll.

She was beautiful inside and out, and appreciated beauty in nature to the end. The evening before her death, she called to tell me about the glory of the spring wildflowers.

Barbara had a joyful and vivacious spirit. My children loved being around their fun-loving aunt, and thought her spaghetti and meatballs and seafood pasta were the best. They all thought she was special.

Thank you, little Sister, for all the happy times we shared. Rest in peace and know that we love and miss you.

Dear Editor, I wanted to take the time to send a thank-you to all of our members of our wonderful community who came to show their support toward protecting our children at the school board meeting on May 8 at Marathon High School.

Thank you to those who spoke at the school board meeting, and thank you to those who attended. Your presence alone showed the school board that we have a close-knit and caring community who want what is best for our children and teens.

We expressed the need to protect them by making our schools the safest learning environments possible. We focused on the importance of the prevention of any kind of tragedy and not being reactive to one.

I also want to take this time to thank our first responders in Marathon. Back in March, I sent a letter to the Sheriff’s Office, Marathon Fire and Rescue, Monroe County Fire and Rescue, the Coast Guard, and FWC inviting them to come to Stanley Switlik Elementary School to use wifi, the restroom, do paperwork, have lunch with kids, join P.E. or recess, attend assemblies and field trips — basically anything they have time for. Their response has been wonderful and welcomed! Any presence is better than no presence at all. These people are precious as is their time. Thank you first responders for coming to school and for being positive role models for our children.

I would especially like to thank Deputy Chief Eric Dunford and everyone at Marathon Fire and Rescue because they are at school every single day, multiple times throughout the day.

Thank you also to Sheriff Ramsay for the police presence in the mornings and as of today, May 14, providing an officer on the Switlik campus throughout the day for the rest of the school year. While there is much to be done to ensure all the Marathon schools are safe and secure, it is so uplifting to know that our community supports each other, takes care of each other, and shows up when it’s necessary! A

s Memorial Day weekend approaches, so does the re-opening of one of Marathon’s hotels damaged during Hurricane Irma.

With a few more coats of paint, new furniture and appliances, the Kingsail Resort at MM 50.5 bayside will open its 44 rooms to guests May 26, after much work since closing after the September storm.

“We’ve done a lot to beautify the property,” said new general manager Laz Flores.

The resort has added kitchenettes to a number of its rooms, giving them more of a suite feel, he said.

Like many structures in the Keys, 60 percent of the property was damaged during Irma, and storm surge resulted in three feet of water inside many of the rooms.

The hotel has been in business since 1950.

It was last owned by Michigan native Timothy Brown, who died in a plane crash in September 2016 along with his wife, Tricia Verhelle-Brown, and son Teddy, 13, in Montana.

Since then, Brown’s son Tim Jr., at just 17 years old, has been the head of operations for Kingsail and two hotels in Michigan.

The Seashell Beach Resort on Grassy Key, which was also owned by Brown, was destroyed during Irma and will not reopen, Flores said.

She enjoys being “I’m in.” I mean, a social busy bee, it would mean a red wine, running (very, very slowly), three-hour drive and spearfishing. … but Red Sox in Yankee Stadium ... sold. “I’ll do the navigating.”

I looked forward to eating a stadium hot dog, drinking a cold Bud Light, and popping some Cracker Jacks, while singing “America the Beautiful” in whatever seats were probably available last minute.

Well, it wasn’t nosebleed seats as Claude Gardner, Jon Crane and I explored our “Legends Suite” amenities; no, it included concierge service with the works. Lobster, steak, stone crab(!), sushi, all the Cracker Jacks I could ever imagine, and hot dogs. I spent an exorbitant amount of time trying to figure out the source for their tiny, illegal-sized stone crab claws. Um, apparently snow crab have claws, too, and they don’t have size limits.

With seats located just behind the entrance to the Sox dugout, our game plan was simple: “Kristen, if a ball comes our way, we will catch it,” said Crane, checking to make sure there were no children around. “Then, we will hand it to you.”

Opportunity one: Coach Tommy sees our frantically waving Sox baseball caps and makes eye contact with us in the “I’m-going-to-throw-you-this-ball” kinda way. In slow motion the ball comes right for me and in a movieesque moment I assume I will catch the ball in my hat. WORST IDEA EVER. It bounces out, and the dude sitting next to us, a Yankee fan trying to impress his “clients,” catches it on the rebound and refuses to make eye contact with me.

Opportunity two: foul ball right next to us. Crane can’t get there quick enough but may or may not have had his fingers on the gem.

Opportunity three: the Keys way, smile and ask. It can’t hurt. I walk up to the dugout, “Hey, Coach!!! Give me one more chance, I won’t blow it this time.” He walks into the dugout shaking his head and I start to turn in disappointment, then notice Coach Tommy mouthing, “Don’t screw this up.” I clasp my hands around the ball like my life depended on it. Crane’s hands clasp around mine making sure I really don’t actually screw it up, and everyone around us cheers. It is the most amazing moment.

By the drive home, my navigation skills were questionable, but we saw beaver road kill and a herd of gigantic northern deer. It doesn’t get much better than that.

“D Monroe County Coalition Monroe County Coalition’s goal is to foster community changes to reduce substance abuse and the consequences of substance abuse through community collaborative efforts. Established in 2008, the nonprofit also has a priority for supporting and advocating for a Safe and Drug Free Community.

The organization strives for commitment of community members and leaders in the Florida Keys to work together to accomplish several goals.

These goals include achieving reductions in the following areas among our county’s youth: early initiation of alcohol and other drug use; alcohol use, binge drinking, and drug use; access to alcohol; and the consequences of alcohol and other drug use.

“We also work to increase the number and quality of prevention programs aimed at middle school, high school, and college students here in Monroe County,” said Susan Moore, of Monroe County Coalition.

“These goals are part of our effort to make Monroe County communities safer and drug-free.”

Located Keyswide, the organization provides a culturally competent, behavioral health and wellness approach to substance abuse prevention in Monroe County.

isasters happen overnight; rebuilding happens over months and years,” said Maj. Joe Smith, recovery coordinator for Salvation Army.

Salvation Army will be opening its long-term recovery center on May 21 to help direct people toward rebuilding their lives. “We are going to help try and fill the funding and resource gap the best we can.”

“We might be able to help where another agency can’t,” said Geotis. “And, if we can’t, we can send them to someone who can.”

Smith and his wife Becky were sent to Big Pine Key from the Tampa headquarters to open the center with the help of local Loretta Geotis. From funding received from Salvation Army’s donors, this is one of the first long-term recovery efforts launched in the history of the nonprofit organization.

“We have always been response-based to supply immediate basic needs for people and families,” said Smith. “We are fortunate to be in a position to help others now with relief funding and rebuilding materials.”

Thirty families have already been vetted through Monroe County’s Long Term Recovery Group and have been referred to the agency.

As part of the Coordinated Assistance Network database, Salvation Army is verifying the need through the database.

“This is an awesome project that we can help others with,” said Geotis, citing monetary help for things ranging from child care to rent and mortgage payments.

“There isn’t much limitation to what we can do.”

The office, located at 30300 Overseas Hwy. on Big Pine Key, is home to shared office space for social workers, available for various agencies working for the same greater good of helping Keys residents in the post-Irma world, and a warehouse for goods (like toothpaste…) that have been donated to the community. Appointments for help can be made by calling 813892-1710.

Eight months after the hurricane, the organization also plans to offer guidance for those suffering from depression and has signed a lease to be in the community through December 2019 for the long-term recovery efforts.

The Salvation Army Thrift Shop is open on Big Pine Key in its original location from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NEW WEATHERMAN Chip Kasper takes over as chief meteorologist

I

n his nearly 20 years of being a forecaster, Chip Kasper has seen more than his fair share of wild storms – 27 to be exact – including the big ones like hurricanes Wilma and Irma.

For the last decade, he’s served as the marine program meteorologist for the Florida Keys National Weather Service in Key West, an absolutely vital role in a community where so many rely on accurate weather preparedness.

All of this and more qualified Kasper to be named the new meteorologist in charge, announced May 14.

He’s taking over for Matt Moreland, who served from April 2015 to September 2017 before being promoted to meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service Office in San Diego, Calif.

Kasper earned a meteorology degree from Florida State University, and has worked in National Weather Service offices serving the Tampa Bay area and state of Alabama.

Last week, he accepted, on behalf of the entire Florida Keys National Weather Service team, the 2018 Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference “Public/ Private Achievement Award.” This award is presented to an individual or small or large organization from the not-for-profit or private sector that has made a substantial contribution to hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation or research in the state of Florida.

He first visited the Florida Keys in the early 1990s, and said he “was drawn like a magnet to its maritime culture and lifestyle.”

When the opportunity to live and work here presented itself in the late 1990s, “I jumped on it,” he said.

“I very much enjoyed working with and learning from the diverse Florida Keys marine community. I still do.”

It’s that and working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy and helping them protect Americans on the sea.

“These are special endeavors, ones that I can get behind because our mission in the National Weather Service is to provide weather, water and climate information that supports decisions that protect life and property,” he said.

Hubris.

Which is your favorite way to give back to the community? Volunteering during fundraising events at my kids’ school. I also am current president of the Port of Key West Propeller Club, a nonprofit maritime industry association.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

When I am concentrating, it looks like I am frowning. (I’m really smiling inside!).

Question you get most often about the weather? “What’s this hurricane season look like?”

If invisible in Key West, what would you do? I would find the very best spots to view local shows and music acts.

On what occasion do you lie? Honesty is always the best policy.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Large café con leche — two sugars.

What job would you secretly love to have? A ship captain.

Most important thing you tell your kids? I love you.

Lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Harry Boyer. He was chief of the Weather Bureau in Key West for over three decades during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

HURRICANE WORKSHOP SET FOR MAY 24 T

he new director of the National Hurricane Center is set to kick off an annual hurricane preparedness workshop for the Florida Keys tourism industry Thursday, May 24 at 1 p.m. at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West.

Ken Graham was selected as the new hurricane center chief in March and arrived at the South Florida-based center after previous director Rick Knabb left the position last spring.

Graham assumed the role of the nation’s hurricane warning chief after serving as meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service’s New Orleans/Baton Rouge office.

During his presentation, Graham is to focus on new forecast tools the NHC is bringing online in 2018, as well as other aspects of the center’s efforts to monitor and issue watches and warnings when a tropical cyclone threatens a region.

The final session is a panel discussion titled “Lessons Learned from (Hurricane) Irma� with participants including Senterfitt; County Administrator Roman Gastesi; County Sheriff Rick Ramsay; Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey; Key West City Manager Jim Scholl; Deputy Commander Lexia Littlejohn of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West; and Jon Rizzo, the warning coordinator for the Key West National Weather Service Office. “We’re confident many of the challenges residents and businesses faced after Hurricane Irma, such as re-entry, debris removal and housing, will be discussed and new solutions presented,� said Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West, which is organizing the workshop in partnership with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. “There will always be the chance that the Keys can be impacted by a tropical storm or hurricane, and being prepared is the solution for resilience and recovery.�

DON’T MISS OUT Acting in the community’s interest MATTHEW SHOWALTER www.keysweekly.com

S

o a friend tells me last month that they’re having a “reading” at the community theater: “It’s a play

by Neil Simon called ‘Rumors.’” I replied, in all honesty: “The Simon and Garfunkel guy wrote a

play?”

After some clarification on the author (who is not, by the way, Paul Simon), I asked what exactly a reading was. She explained to me that they would carry the script and read their lines, no stage props would be used and they would often just stand behind podiums and basically just read their parts.

I said it sounded like a great time (it didn’t; I lied) and then immediately began to think about how I could get out of going. Ultimately, I wasn’t on the ball (though I would prefer to say I was being supportive of one of my local civic organizations) and I did attend the show.

I want to state immediately that I was wrong — completely wrong — and anyone who didn’t take the time to go see this production truly missed out on something really great! The show made me laugh until my stomach genuinely hurt. The actors and actresses were amazing.

I have been to Broadway a dozen times or more, and have never been this entertained; no lie, it was just that good.

What they could convey by their walk, or their facial expression, or their tone, or demeanor – I was truly taken aback by their talents. Even cooler is that you’ll know half the people up there from around town, which adds a little something to the experience; you’ll also probably know half the crowd. It’s so great that they spend their extra time and energy going and doing this in the hopes of entertaining us and bringing our community together.

Now, in case you haven’t been to the community theater, it’s right next to the cinema on the oceanside.

It’s a simple little place, but full of charm. I first went to the theater to watch one of the Dunn family’s 11 adorable children in a play, which is just a great community service to teach kids (and adults) public speaking and creativity and bravery.

This was my first time going for an actual production. I am happy to say I went back for the next show and it too was just downright awesome. It also was a comedy, executed to perfection, and this time we had the props. I fell in love with this place for sure!

If you’re looking for something to do in town, take a night and go fill the seats. Take a friend, take a date, or just take a break from real life and go enjoy a show.

This is a great organization full of absolutely wonderful people and we need to support them all. The upside is that you don’t just have to donate (they got busted up pretty bad in Irma and could use your help, though), you can actually just spend some money on a ticket, which supports them, and get a great evening out of it; it’s truly a win-win.

ilagro, a new restaurant that opened after the dust of Hurricane Irma settled, is getting rave reviews on social media from locals who have tried the Spanish-inspired menu.

New regulars at the Big Pine Key restaurant, Lisa and Kevin, said they tread lightly when something new opens in the area.

“We have come in several times now, and we haven’t wavered from the burrito and Carnivale with added mushrooms,” said Kevin. While eating the coffee crème brulee dessert, they said they’ll be more adventurous when they return.

The most popular item: the grilled octopus appetizer served over an applewood bacon polenta. Owner and chef Kevin Montoya said the octopus became a theme when they were decorating the space. “My mom is a finicky eater and she even loved it,” he said.

Montoya and his wife Maggie are no strangers to good service, coming from a Casa Marina and Beachside Marriott background. The two are passionate about bringing something good to the community. “We are doing this from our heart,” said Maggie. “We want everyone who comes in here to feel special and leave with a good impression.”

The name Milagro means “miracle,” and that’s what it took to get the restaurant opened after the hurricane. “We had to start completely from scratch,” she said. “We knew this would be the name because we knew if we pulled it off it would be nothing short of a miracle.”

Volunteers descend on Crane Point Help keeps coming after Hurricane Irma

ecently, 50 volunteers of the International WeLoveU Foundation arrived in Marathon to paint one of the main buildings at Crane Point Museum and Nature Center. The work is an extension of the foundation’s national and international efforts to make a difference in local communities “We’re excited to be re-painting this building after Hurricane Irma” said Lindsi, a WeLoveU volunteer. “We hope to make a great impact in the community and invite others, too, to do the same.”

“When all of you showed up and then more kept coming, and more kept coming, and more kept coming, words just can’t say how grateful I am,” said Charlotte Quinn, CEO of Crane Point Museums and Nature Center.

Marathon camp, soccer programs near

T

he Marathon Parks and Recreation Department is registering campers and soccer players for summer programs. Registration forms are available at the park office in Community Park and on the city web site, www.ci.marathon.fl.us.

Summer soccer is open for ages 4-10. This is a six-week program that will start June 19 and end July 26. Practices and games will all be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. at the Community Park soccer fields. Cost is $60. A $20 discount applies to players who register by June 9. This fee includes a soccer ball, shin guards, team shirt, and awards banquet.

Summer camp registration is also open. Summer camp starts June 4 and ends August 10. This camp is for ages 5-13. Camp times are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The $80 fee includes two weekly field trips. Campers are responsible for bringing a water bottle, lunch, and 2 snacks each day. One field trip per week will be to Jacobs Aquatic to swim. Both registration and health forms are available on the city’s web site.

EVEN MORE SONGS I’D LIKE TO HEAR NEVER AGAIN, PART 6 Wastes of vinyl, acrylic, airtime…

B

efore we get into the real reason for this week’s column, I must offer special thanks to the readers who come to my gigs and request the songs about which I write. So that everyone knows, the likelihood of ever hearing me singing a Styx song is as likely as the chance that the Devil will ice skate his way to work. That being said, when I write one of these, I must state beforehand: WARNING — this column may induce your brain to remember potentially unpleasant and cheesy music! And remember, these are only my opinions — your mileage may vary!

“Edge of Seventeen” – Stevie Nicks.

Just get a load of these pithy and insightful lyrics: “Just like the whitewinged dove, sings a song sounds like she’s singing — ooh baby, ooh, yeah ooh.” Not since John Cougar Mellencamp’s “Small Town” (“I never will forget from where it is that I come from…”) has there been a more redundant set of lyrics. How does one “sing a song sounds like she’s singing?” Unless her act of singing sounds nothing like singing; in which case why is anybody listening? And what does it sound like — a backhoe on concrete? And that incessant chunka-chunka palm-muted electric guitar riff — seriously, what is up with that? Did the song really need an element even more monotonous than the redundant and repetitive lyrics? At least that guitar part sounds the alarm that a bad song is about to burst forth from the radio speakers, giving the annoyed listener time to change stations.

“Wannabe” – Spice Girls. You want to know what I want, what I really, really want? How about never hearing this crappy song ever again!

“Because I Got High” – Afroman.

This is a catchy little schoolyardrepetitive ditty that celebrates all the bad things that can happen “because I got high.” Really. The guy in the song moves through some serious situations and horrible consequences as a result of his perpetually baked status, but because he’s baked, it’s all really okay. The song has all the production value of a Big Mac box, and the music is as tasty… as the box.

“It’s a Small World After All” – Robert and Richard Sherman/Walt Disney Theme Parks. Just the suggestion of this song already has it going around in your brain, doesn’t it? Whatever you do, try and avoid the ride at Disney World, because you’ll get to hear the song in every language on Earth.

“Hot in Herre” – Nelly. So the guy can’t spell. But he can combine a seriously annoying rhythm track with inane lyrics like, “Gucci collar for dollar, got out and walked it/I spit game cause baby I can’t talk it.” And so you really want to take off your clothes for him just because it’s hot? It’s quite hot a lot of the time and a lot of places down here; thankfully, most leave at least a few articles of clothing on. If it’s that hot, after a while it can get smelly … Nelly.

“You Spin Me Round” – Dead or Alive. The 1980s weren’t known as a time of great music. There were serious highlights: Bruce Hornsby & The Range, Don Henley’s solo career, Van Halen (especially with Sammy Hagar), and the big video years of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. There was a whole lot more less significant material, like this song in question. Some amazingly repetitive lyrics are featured here: You spin me right round, baby, right round like a record, baby, right round round round…” Now you’re going to hear this song in your head the rest of the day. Unless, that is, you switch to the equally annoying “Round and Round”

by Ratt — another group with a slight spelling problem. Sadly, Pete Burns, Dead or Alive’s lead singer and only long-term member, passed away in 2016, answering the inherent question that is the group’s name in the former.

10. Do make sure everyone aboard knows where all emergency equipment is and how to use it.

6. Don’t run out of fuel: general rule is 1/3 out, 1/3 to cruise around and 1/3 to get home.

7. Don’t be without proper gear and safety equipment.

8. Don’t wear jewelry — some fish think sparkly things are food.

9. Don’t abdicate your responsibility to your passengers, your vessel, other vessels.

10. Don’t forget: accidents happen in minutes. Stay aware, stay safe and have fun.

ne hundred and fifty anglers set out to the water in 42 boats on May 12 to fish in the annual Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys tournament.

Anglers from Marathon, as well as Cudjoe Key to Homestead, and as far away as Vegas, Georgia and the British Virgin Islands, gathered to compete in this one-day dolphin shootout. Anglers weighed their heaviest dolphin catch at Curly’s Coffee and Marina in Marathon, with large crowds gathering to watch.

The Saturday night awards banquet turned into a wonderful party at Key Colony Inn with prize money and trophies for the winners as well as door prizes and a special video message from the famous actor, John C. Reilly, to the attendees.

The event raised $45,000 for Habitat Middle Keys which will be used directly toward the building of new affordable homes to be purchased by families in Marathon with an interestfree loan. Donations will also be used for hurricane recovery repairs and critical home repairs to homeowners in the Middle Keys.

The Marathon Boat Yard along with Yamaha were this year’s tournament title sponsors.

‘TAKE STOCK’ GRADS CAPPED ON MAY 19 58 earn high school diplomas

he Monroe County Education Foundation will recognize the accomplishments and celebrate the graduation of its 58 Take Stock in Children senior scholars on Saturday, May 19, at 11:30 a.m. in the Marathon High School Auditorium.

With a collective weighted grade point average of 3.69 and one third of the class eligible for Florida Bright Futures, these Take Stock in Children scholars are poised to begin their college journey.

Having received more than 130 college acceptances, two-thirds of the TSIC Class of 2018 will attend a Florida university. The remaining students will enter college, with one enlisting in the Coast Guard.

This year the Monroe County Education Foundation will welcome fourtime Paralympian and six-time World Champion Josh George as the keynote speaker. Josh’s life changed significantly when he was 4 years old after falling from a 12-story window. During his adolescence, Josh explored adapted athletics, participating in multiple sports. He discovered wheelchair racing was his calling. Today, in addition to competing around the world, Josh motivates others to maximize their potential and to keep moving fast.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments of these dedicated and hard-working Take Stock in Children scholars,” said

Monroe County School Superintendent Mark Porter.

Although the mission of Take Stock in Children is to provide students with the financial resources to attend college, the Monroe County Education Foundation board continues to focus on providing students with the tools and skills necessary to complete a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Program Coordinator Chuck Licis highlighted the importance of Take Stock’s college and career readiness efforts. “This year’s class is ready to take the next step, to pursue their college goals and career dreams!”

The Monroe County Education Foundation, established in 1996, is a Florida not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing and improving the educational experiences of students within Monroe County. In addition to the MCEF flagship program, Take Stock in Children, the foundation provides leadership development opportunities and international travel experiences for qualified Monroe County students.

There is a synchronized swimming camp for children ages 6 to 14 at Founders Park in Islamorada this summer.

The sessions are June 11–15, June 18–22; July 16–20, July 17–21. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On the final day, swimmers wear their very own custom designed and decorated suit, and perform their routine for family and friends. Synchronized swimmers headed to Junior Olympics

T

he duo of Riley Cooper, 12, and Alice Dangel, 11, placed third at the Florida Regional Synchronized Swimming Championship Competition. Both swimmers are now headed to Junior Olympics competition in Oxford, Ohio next month. This year was the first year swimmers of the Synchro Sirens, an Upper Keys club based at Founders Park, were eligible to qualify for a national competition.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these two. They have worked so hard both in and out of practice,” said Synchro Sirens head coach Isla Crawford. The Synchro Sirens will perform their duet, titled “It Takes Two.” Crawford said the Junior Olympic competition is the largest and most competitive national synchro competition in the country. The competition will run an entire week at Miami University in Ohio, starting Saturday, June 23.

The local synchronized swimming club currently has four novice, one intermediate, and four age-group swimmers on the team. In the inset photo, Riley Cooper is pictured at left, and Alice Dangel is on the right.
