What’s the best advice mom has given you?

Joanna Marin of Chris’ Bait and Tackle said, “Never depend on anybody but yourself. She always taught me to be independent. I’m a full-time student in college (premed) and a full-time employee at work.”

Debbie Halama, a Republican, is Debbie Halama the latest to announce.

The District 2 seat, being vacated by George Neugent who has announced a run for Marathon Council, is being sought by Halama, Michelle Coldiron (R), Eleanor McAdams (NPA – no party affiliation), Thomas “Tommy” Ryan (D), and Charles Weitzel (R). District 4 incumbent David Rice (R) faces Vicki Tashjian (NPA). BOCC candidates must live in a certain geographical area to be eligible to run, but are elected countywide.

Halama (pronounced “halma”) said it’s concerns about representation that prompted to her run.

That, and car ride talks with her two teenage sons from their home on Big Pine Key to Key West Collegiate Academy. “It went beyond ‘What happened at school today,’ to conversation centered around politics,” she said.

Halama has been a Keys Realtor since 2004, although she spent time in the Keys during the ’90s working at local banks. She also has owned Molly’s Pawn and More on Big Pine Key since 2012.

“What I hear from my neighbors and the business community is that local government is not listening to them over the last several years, but this really came to light after Hurricane Irma,” she said. “It’s a lot of work, and I’ve done a lot of research, but I’m in it to the finish

Raschein updates village; manager gets “high marks” The May 3 Islamorada Village Council meeting opened with state Rep. Holly Raschein discussing major victories for the Keys in the most recent legislative session. Raschein highlighted a handful of bills related to funding the Florida Stewardship Act, the construction of a permanent Emergency Operations Center, lionfish eradication, workforce housing, and Mosquito Control District Board term limits, and a new component in the tax package for property owners displaced

by Hurricane Irma to apply for a tax refund with local property appraisers.

Raschein also announced Gov. Rick Scott’s proposal to add 1,300 workforce affordable housing permits for the Keys. Municipalities like Islamorada will be able to apply for up to 300 units at one time. See page 31.

Representatives from People, Smith, and Matthews, lobbyists who represent the Village of Islamorada at the state and federal levels, discussed the impact of some of the 200 bills passed by the Legislature. They also touched on the issue of increasing the positions for state law enforcement on the water and roads. “We haven’t had additional boots on the ground since 2000. We’ve grown in tourism but we haven’t grown our (show of force) on the water or on the road,” said Council-

man Mike Forster. “We don’t want to be known for deaths on the highway and deaths on water, so we have to be proactive and get some people here.”

Forster said he is in conversations with local and state officials about adding more law enforcement to the village, but also considers housing an important part the equation of retaining trained officers in the Keys.

After approving several professional service agreements with wastewater and affordable housing contractors/developers, the Village Council summarized its professional reviews of Village Manager Seth Lawless. “I think Seth does a great job; I think he’s a leader,” said Councilwoman Cheryl Meads. “I’m very glad that we have him. I give him high marks.”

Lawless was tasked with a difficult job recovering from Hurricane Irma in his first year as village manager and his colleagues lauded his efforts. “I’m really happy to be here. We have some incredible employees; that’s how we get our results,” said Lawless.

In other news: President Betsy Baste of the Upper Keys senior group, the Joy Center, announced that 248 members had signed up for the group through its trial period, with an average of 63 daily attendees throughout the center’s pilot program. The group recently gained its non-profit status, and is in the process of requesting grants, and planning programs during its summer hiatus.

A proclamation was also made

by Islamorada Mayor Chris Sante to declare the month of May Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. “Please look

CALL TO ARMS CSHS senior set to “ship out” to Marine Corps boot camp after graduation

S

ince he was a young boy, Noah Hane has loved watching war movies. His curiosity peaked in high school when he finally had a chance to speak with recruiters and begin to learn about the different branches and what they do. Last July he finally enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry Marine, and is set to leave for boot camp in June. To prepare he’s been training hard. Three days a week Hane drives more than an hour to physical training sessions with other South Florida recruits. He’s been studying his 10 General Orders, command and rank structure, Marine Corps history, and learning all about teamwork to prepare for boot camp. While his fellow classmates learn all about peerreviewed college essays, Hane will be learning a slightly different set of skills as the next generation of United States Marines.

You are a big fan of war movies; which is your favorite? I love war movies, they’re very interesting. My favorite war movie is “Full Metal Jacket” because I like it when the drill instructor yells at the recruits and calls them funny names.

What inspired you to join the Marine Corps? I have always had an interest in the military but I couldn’t choose between Army or Marines. So I looked up videos and talked to the recruiters and then I understood how different the Marines were to all the other branches and thought this is what I want to do rather than college.

What’s your goal within the first two years of your enlistment? I will have more goals as time passes during and after boot camp, but right now I want to gain weight and muscle.

What are you going to miss most about home? When I am gone I’m going to miss the ocean the most. I love being out on the water in the Keys and doing stuff.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years I see myself either still in the Marine Corps or a firefighter/police officer in Tavernier.

Your mother is going to worry; how are you going to stay in touch? I am going to call my mom almost every day and I will send letters.

How are you most like your mom? My mom is super friendly, loving, and caring to everyone she meets and I am the same way to everyone.

What is one piece of advice that your mom has given you that you will use in the future? My mom is a banker and she has always told me to save money, so I will save money by not buying dumb stuff I don’t need that I will want.

If you could sit down with one historical figure, dead or alive, who would it be? I would want to sit down with Secretary of Defense James Mattis because he was a general in the Marine Corps and he could give me some really good advice and motivation for when I am in the Marines.

Which parts of the world do you hope to see?

When I am in the Marines I definitely want to see the Middle East and Australia because I’ve grown up seeing troops in the Middle East and I want to see what it is like. I also hope to go to Australia because it seems like a super cool country and the Marines train over there with the Australian military.

One of your hobbies is photography. What things do you think you’ll photograph while in the military? When I am in the military I’m going to take pictures of military vehicles, guns, people, awesome places, explosions and myself.

What have you learned from watching YouTube videos about boot-camp? From watching YouTube videos I have learned to be fast and loud when I go to boot camp. I have also learned how to not hurt myself by taking care of my body when doing PT or marching.

You’ve had friends in the delayed entry program leave for boot-camp and come back; what’s the biggest difference? Usually when they leave, they leave in bad physical

shape or in good physical shape, three months go by and they come back in uniform looking all cool. Their physical shape gets so much better. Like, they use to do 10 pull-ups and now they can do 25, or they ran a mile and a half in 14 minutes, and then they run it under 11 minutes.

Are you going to miss your hair?

Yes and no, I do look pretty good with my hair now but the Marine Corps will give me a super great buzz cut that will be a chick magnet.

Where do you want to be stationed? After boot camp and SOI (School of Infantry) I want to be stationed somewhere near Florida so I can be close to my family and friends.

TECH TOOL HELPS PREPARE FOR STATE TESTS

A

group of educators in the Monroe County School District credits Istation, an educational technology tool created by a Dallas-based company, for student performance improvements as they prepare for the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) statewide standardized tests.

With Istation, teachers can monitor students’ learning achievements as they deliver targeted instruction. Istation’s on-demand assessments provide lessons based on students’ individual performance.

“I love that [Istation] tiers my students and provides individualized interventions that I can use to help my struggling students,” said Jessica Lockwood, a third-grade teacher at Poinciana Elementary School in Key West.

Her class uses Istation Reading every week during reading rotations.

A recent study conducted by the Morgridge International Reading Center at the University of Central Florida confirmed that student results on Istation assessments can predict performance on the FSA.

“Istation has been a very successful tool for our very youngest readers,” said Kelly Brower, literacy coach at Plantation Key School (pre-K through eighth grade) and Coral Shores High School in Tavernier.

Even advanced students are benefitting, Brower noted, as the district’s Tier 1 students have continued to grow in both reading and math. Brower said Istation’s detailed data on individual student performance allows teachers to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in both reading and math.

Caitlin Nicklaus, Elementary MTSS Coordinator and Academic Interventionist at Horace O’Bryant School, said Istation’s data was very helpful in the classroom. “What I most appreciate about Istation is the variety of reports it provides,” she said.

ISLAMORADA TEAM WINS BIG PRIZE Team Cool Runnings secured the overall win and a $25,000 first-place cash prize at Marathon’s 12th annual Bull and Cow Dolphin Tournament that ended May 6 in the middle Florida Keys. Islamorada residents Jack Redberg, Max Dixson, Paul Ross, KC Spaulding and Will Kaufman, each aged between 18 and 21 — and whose fathers are second- and third-generation Keys fishing captains — teamed up to tally a 65-pound combined weight of a bull and cow dolphin fish for the win. The team earned an extra prize for the largest bull overall, a fish totaling 58.6 pounds, and a prize for the largest combined weight of three fish, 78.8 pounds. This year’s field of 129 boats with nearly 650 anglers was the tournament’s largest attendance so far. The popular Middle Keys challenge raises money for local charities and athletic scholarships; it was headquartered at the Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon. CONTRIBUTED

A well-preserved shipwreck found on the western edge of the Little Bahama Bank was clearly Spanish and dated to the 1500s, but there were no obvious signs of its mission or identity. Careful excavation and analysis of the materials found on the shipwreck, along with clues provided by the remains of the ship itself, shows that the sizeable vessel sailed between 1555 and 1575 and had touched at Tierra Firme (Colombia and Panama) before sinking during a return voyage to Spain. By comparing the archaeological evidence to the historical record, it becomes clear that the wreck can be none other than the Santa Clara, a 300-ton galleon owned by the famed Spanish mariner Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and sunk in 1564. Malcom, who organized the research, will detail the fascinating step-by-step process, from discovery to identification, of this early and important shipwreck.

.F. “Bud” and Martha McKenney came to visit the Florida Keys from Atlanta, Georgia where they operated a series of ice cream parlors. During their stay, they looked at a flooded railroad quarry on Windley Key and decided on a lifestyle change. The McKenneys went home to Atlanta, sold their business, and moved to the Keys.

When they arrived in 1941, the McKenneys leased the flooded quarry pit and its surrounding acreage from Alonzo Cothron. With the help of Cothron, McKenney worked to further develop the property into the 17-acre roadside attraction known as Theater of the Sea. Theater of the Sea became the second marine life-related attraction in the Keys. The first had been the Key West Aquarium, one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Federal Emergency Relief Administration programs, developed in response to the Great Depression. When Theater of the Sea opened in 1946, admission prices were $1.50 for adults and 55 cents for children over 7.

The park’s first performing dolphins were captured and trained by Grassy Key legend Milton Santini, considered a pioneer in the art of capturing, transporting, and training wild dolphins. Santini’s most famous pupil was Mitzi, the dolphin best remembered for her role as Flipper.

ore than 50 members and friends of Flagler’s Folly Society ventured to the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center to watch the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby in its state-ofthe-art theater. Guests were greeted with two of Islamorada’s finest horses ridden in by Richmond Arce and Sarah Ewald, and a traditional Derby favorite, a mint julep.

In addition to the mint julep, Southern-themed appetizers were served. Playing a 50-50 raffle, guests made their best guess at trying to pick the winning horse. Many chose Justify, with Kristy Moss’ ticket landing her the lucky winner of $255.

Acting as a guest judge, Arce chose the winners of several categories including: Best Dressed Lady, Most Handsome Gentleman, Best Matched Couple, Loveliest Hat, and Most Outrageous Hat. atty Sparks’ favorite song is the national anthem. She sang it more than 1,000 times over her six years of military service. In fact, her love of the anthem made her to want to build a flagpole in front of her business, but because of the semantics of the Village of Islamorada’s code, she’s only singing the blues.

Sparks and her husband, Sammy, have been trying to put a flagpole in front of their business, St Sparks Construction Inc., for some time. But the business fronts U.S.1 and the pole they want is considered a structure by village code, and must be 20 feet back from the road. 20 feet back puts the flagpole right in the middle of their business.

As a veteran, Sparks said the American flag and national anthem are special to her. Sparks joined the Air Force in 1983, where she served as a photojournalist stationed in Korea, as a chief of community relations, and as a member of the Air Force band. “I made a cassette tape with three songs and would you believe I was the first person in band history to be hired via a cassette tape rather than a grueling audition?” said Sparks.

The Sparkses submitted their permit application back in early spring. It failed planning and structural reviews for a few reasons.

Aside from clerical issues, the village’s code requires at least a 20-foot front yard setback for structures fronting U.S.1. The flagpole the Sparks want to build falls within the

required 20 feet. The couple also needed to provide design information that proves the pole can withstand 180-mph winds.

After reviewing the code, the Sparkses disagreed with the village’s interpretation that flag poles are to be treated as structures. The Sparkses also argue that other U.S.1fronting properties in the village have flagpoles installed within the setback.

It should be noted that flagpoles erected before the Village’s charter are considered conforming.

Now if the Sparks want a flag, they have two options – spend $2,500 to apply for a variance to build the flagpole, with no guarantee it would be approved, or build it on the side of their building, said Mrs. Sparks. The Sparks are adamant about displaying the American Flag in front of their business, however.

“Nowhere in the village code, that I have read, does it refer to a flagpole as a structure. It does say that a permit is required to build a flagpole per Florida Building Code, but nowhere in the Florida Building Code does it refer to a flagpole as a structure,” said Mrs. Sparks.

According to interm Planning Director Joseph Corradino, variances must meet the hardship criteria set forth in the village code for approval.

“The entire building code is applied to flag pole construction. Particularly wind load and structural sections,” said Corradino.

The Sparkses are currently weighing their options.

Upper Keys mothers are kind of special. Not to brag, but yes, they are an elite tribe. They wear a lot of hats; whether they are working moms or stay-at-home, there is always plenty for them to do. Let’s celebrate the women who are raising the next generation of island kids and doing it seamlessly with grace, laughter, friends, family and a whole lot of sunshine.

THERESA YONG Theresa Yong says being a mom is like digging through a box of chocolates: you “never know what you’re gonna get.” With her girls Lola, 11, and Kaitlin, 18, there is certainly never a dull moment. “They are both musical, and Lola has played just about every sport under the sun. We encourage them to be independent.”

As a professional mom, Yong says her focus is on providing for the family and kids to help them have a solid foundation in life. “My mom was a super provider. She had to overcome a lot of obstacles and challenges to keep her kids protected, happy, and focused on being kids.”

Her favorite part about being a mom is the nonstop laughter.

NADA JONES The “endless love” is the best part of being a mom for Nada Jones. “Seeing a baby you once nursed become a woman is not for the faint of heart. It’s the most terrifying and beautiful thing I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of,” said Jones. She also said every mom should be considered a supermom. “We all do what we can at the time. No one got me to listen, but they did try to tell me, that when you have a baby you either totally immerse yourself or do something less. I did the full immersion version. The biggest thing is that you need more help than you ask for. You can really lose it being the mom alone a lot.

THERESA VAUGHAN Theresa Vaughan says the best part of being a mom has been watching her son Michael turn into a wonderful young man. “All the accomplishments he’s made – he doesn’t let anything stop him. He graduated from Florida State University last year.” As a hardworking mom, Vaughan says she’s proud that her son has a strong work ethic. “When he sets his mind to it, he usually tries to make it happen.”

I love spending time in the kitchen with Will; he’s a great kid chef,” said Ciampa. If you ask her what the key to parenting is, Ciampa would tell you good recruiting. As a working mom, Ciampa said the family and friends helping her are incomparable.

She credits her mother’s nurturing personality for her successes in motherhood. “I’m kind of turning into her,” she laughed. “It’s kind of funny, we spend a lot of time together, we work together doing commercial fishing paperwork.” The toughest part of being a mom is being the one to make all the decisions. “When you are in the earlier stages you are trying to figure out what exactly they need. ANGIE GANDARILLA Being a mom can be like looking into a mirror for Angie Gandarilla. “I definitely see myself in my kids; they act like me, have similar personalities, the same quirks, and even some of my facial expressions, especially my daughter.” Even with busy kids Alexia, 18, and Fernando, 14, running around, Gandarilla said the family always makes time to eat together and catch up every chance they get. NEW CORAL DISEASE SPREADING ‘Unknown pathogen’ moving south through Florida Reef tract GABRIEL SANCHEZ

eports of widespread coral disease in Lower Keys reefs, and summer heat coming, could spell trouble for remaining healthy coral systems, say local researchers tracking the event.

“As of several weeks ago, researchers have documented diseased coral on Looe Key Reef,” said Keys Marine Lab’s Cindy Lewis. “We have been monitoring identifiable colonies, and one particular colony without disease at all, that now have disease.”

Back in late 2014, coral disease incidents were reported near Key Biscayne by staff of the state Department of Environmental Protection and area scientists. In a year’s time, nearly 55 linear miles of reef experienced widespread disease, according to the environmental agency. By 2016-17 the disease continued to spread as far north as Palm Beach County and south to Lower Matecumbe.

“While the coral disease outbreak is unprecedented, so is the collaborative response to it,” said Sarah Fangman, superintendent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. “We are working with Florida Department of Environmental Protection and dozens of partners in taking a multi-faceted approach. It is an aggressive, coordinated response to identify the pathogen and experiment with a variety of management strategies to combat it.”

The mysterious disease has not yet been given a name, but its symptoms resemble other reef diseases that cause white bands or spots to appear on corals, said Lewis. The whitening that happens with this particular disease is actually coral tissue dying, not to be confused with bleaching, which is caused by photosynthetic algae leaving the coral.

It’s also been “hop scotching around” reef colonies, said Lewis.

Not every reef is affected. At the beginning of the year, divers with DEP and FWC confirmed the disease had made it to Sombrero Reef. Of the several reefs in between Sombrero and Looe Key reef, some have the

disease and others do not, said Lewis.

Fangman said coral disease outbreaks are not uncommon. However, this event is unique due to its large geographic range, extended duration, high rates of mortality and the number of species affected.

“Nearly half of the stony coral species found on the Florida Reef Tract have been affected,” she said, “including the primary reef-building species in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

“The exact cause and contributing factors for this event will take more time to identify,” she said. “In the meantime, addressing other known coral stressors, such as pollution and sedimentation, will increase the ability of the corals to recover. Identifying disease-resistant types of corals is also a component of disease management.”

Since December, Lewis and researchers at Keys Marine Lab’s onshore facility have been working to find treatment methods for corals affected by the mysterious disease.

Researchers have been using temperature-controlled sea water tanks to study the disease. This allows them to conduct treatment trials in a controlled environment. The lab, on Long Key, is part of the state university system which hosts students and professors who are researching marine subjects.

The disease event has broadened the research Keys Marine Lab was conducting on pillar coral to include other corals.

What research has found is that affected corals seem to fall into “tiers of susceptibility,” said Lewis.

The first tier — pillar, elliptical star, and maze coral — are very susceptible, she said. The second tier is boulder and brain corals. The third tier, star coral, which researchers believed was more resistant, is now also showing signs of disease.

Clemson University doctoral candidate Kylie Smith first came to the Keys to research Caribbean Spiny Lobster.

Now, she’s working on coral restoration and transplanting with research partner Carah Noonan, a graduate student also from Clemson.

“From what we have been able to see, it does appear some species are more susceptible than others.

Staghorn coral is susceptible to many things, so they are the one that are getting a lot of attention studying disease resistance,” said Smith.

However, each shows signs of disease in slightly different ways. In a lot of cases, the disease has a characteristic translucent tissue that appears on coral in the form of a band or circular bullseye, said Lewis.

In terms of treatments, Keys Marine Lab have been testing epoxies, modeling clay, and dental paste laced with chlorine powder on corals in the tanks. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is supporting the coral studies by helping obtain corals to study. Researchers have also experimented with small targeted treatments of antibiotics, and have found success, though Lewis said what’s needed is a treatment method that can be used in the wild.

Since 2015, researchers from every level of governments, universities, and conservation organizations have been responding to the disease outbreak.

“There are a lot of things that we don’t know at the moment,” said Lewis.

“What we do know is that the disease line has been moving from the Upper Keys down to the Lower Keys. Last summer we were told it was off Tavernier, around Alligator Reef lighthouse.”

Smith and other researchers are not exactly sure what causes some coral to be more susceptible than others.

It’s thought that the less susceptible to heat corals are, the more susceptible they are to disease.

“There is a lot of ongoing research into those tradeoffs,” Smith said.

“Because of the warming events in the Keys in 2014 and 2015, it’s suggested that this disease outbreak is strongly related to those heating events.”

Another hot summer could spell trouble for affected coral colonies.

“Research shows a lot of these pathogens are more active in warmer water. Another warm summer would mean the fifth year in a row these corals are under stress,” said Lewis.

Recreational divers are encouraged to use the SEAFAN and C-OCEAN reporting systems to report any biological events they encounter while diving. These biological events include reef bleaching and coral disease.

here are a lot on interesting rumors about voting in the Florida Keys; some true and some not so much. Good thing Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin has built one of the most comprehensive websites for Monroe County voters. It seems to hold the magical key to some cocktail fodder questions like the big one — are we “red” or are we “blue”?

Heading into American midterm elections, seeing the stats might make the difference about getting out and voting.

Are the Florida Keys mostly Democratic or Republican? There has been some debate on actual numbers, so let’s look at them. As of May 7, according to keyselections.org, there are 52,678 active registered voters in Monroe County, with 16,971 Democrats and 20,560 Republicans, but there are 15,147 voters registered as “other.” The other makes up roughly a 28 percent swing vote in a general election, so can we truly be categorized as blue or red? Hard to say. If in the next election 15,000 people decide to vote one way or the other, it’s a big variable.

But by how much? In the 2016 general election there were 54,749 active registered voters in Monroe County, but 43,355 actually voted — a 79.19 percent turnout. Republican Trump won the county by 2,933 votes out of 42,977 cast, with 21,904 voting Republican and 18,971 Democrat, or 50.97 percent to 44.14 percent. That margin represents about 3 percent or 4 percent of the population of the Keys who decided the winner.

It’s an interesting map when broken down by precinct and numbers. The City of Key West including Stock Island voted Democratic with more votes going to candidate Hillary Clinton. With a total of 13,850 overall votes, these Lower Keys precincts represented 32 percent of voters in the last election. From Big Coppitt to Ocean Reef, the majority voted for Republican candidate Trump. But really, neither side won by a landslide in most precincts. Looking at district vot-

ing, some were a 50 percent to 40 percent, or some 60 percent to 30 percent, Democrat over Republican, but also, Republican over Democrat. There looks like enough evidence that a healthy amount of blue and red live in most precincts, making it hard to define the Keys as a whole.

Looking back at past presidential elections also supports our purple tendencies. The past three presidential elections look like a 50-50 split. In 2004, it was 49.1 percent Bush (R) versus 49.5 percent Kerry (D); 2008, 46.79 percent McCain (R) versus 51.65 percent Obama (D); and in 2012, 49.13 percent Romney (R) versus 49.54 percent Obama (D). So yes, there are more registered Republicans in Monroe County, but as whole, it looks like the box checked “other” has the most power to win elections.

Absentee voting makes up nearly one third of votes in Monroe County. “There is the myth absentee ballots are not counted, not at all true — in fact, they are counted first,” said Griffin. “Coupled with early voting, they make up more than half of the results before election day.” Now, absentee votes have been relabeled “voting by mail” because one doesn’t have to be away from home to send in a vote. Voting by mail allows voter convenience and is counted if received by 7 p.m. Election Day, so absolutely, vote by mail ballots are counted in every election.

And just to clarify, no one can access a voter’s personal information. “Election officers cannot give out social security or driver’s license numbers. There is no way to know who you voted for.” But Gov. Rick Scott did sign a bill (HB 85) in March that allows the Department of State to share voter information with other states provided that the effort is not controlled by the federal government. It’s an effort to stop duplicate voting in other states.

Griffin cannot stress enough, especially after Irma, that residents should update voter information, address and vote by mail info, which can expire.

Many people may neglect to vote if they moved away from their polling place or their by mail ballot has expired. All of which may make a big difference whether Monroe County is red, blue or just allaround purple. The website www.keyselections.org is easy to use and one click away from registering or updating voter info.

THE DO’S & DON’TS OF MOTHER’S DAY Aaaahh, Mother’s Day, a day that can be full of joy and surprise or fraught with expectation and disappointment. If you are a mom you know there are Vegas odds that it can go either way, from the best day ever to “meh.” So to help out you poor dads and children fretting over the big day, here is the Weekly’s Top List of Do’s and Don’ts for Mother’s Day. —Weekly Staff report

Do first thing in the morning sneak out of the bedroom, shut door quietly, and put sleepy kids immediately in front of TV or iPad and make coffee, QUIETLY, and remain perfectly still until she awakens.

Don’t plan a brunch that includes children under the age of 8. Really, it’s equivalent to taking howler monkeys shopping at Tiffany’s. It’s any mom’s worst nightmare.

Do allow her to watch television uninterrupted. Yep, one solid hour without “Mo-om (two syllables), “did you know there is a planet called Uranus?”

Don’t at any point lie down on the bed or couch, turn on sports and pretend the Mother’s Day is over after breakfast at 9:15 a.m. The next eight hours will not go well.

Do load and unload the dishwasher (both), fold clean laundry (check the dryer) and vacuum (it’s in the side closet). Enough said. And under no circumstances ask where anything belongs; how long have you lived there?

Don’t leave the bathroom without loo paper. Just this one day, unhitch the thingy and put on a new roll. Hint: found under the sink or side closet and do not put on upside down please. You can do it, she believes in you.

Do have homemade crafts on hand from the kids; but not you, no, you husbands and dads must have mimosas and flowers on hand.

Don’t give her candy for Mother’s Day if she’s on a diet. Or, maybe you should. You know best, but approach this situation with extreme caution and be ready to beat a FAST retreat if things head south.

Do stop random strangers, or semifamiliar acquaintances, and extravagantly praise your mom/wife in loud tones. “My wife makes the best spaghetti! She remembers to schedule oil changes! She is the best thing that ever happened to me! I would be dead without her!”

Don’t hand her the phone with your mother on it. Nope, like sticking two Colombian drug cartel leaders in the same room. No, the glare will incinerate you on the spot.

Both serve at the detention center. “It was the best decision I ever made,” he said. His most rewarding experience thus far has been his promotion to detention sergeant, which happened last Thursday.

SERGEANT ASHLEY LEAHY 10 YEARS WITH MCSO “I can’t always say I always wanted to be a detention deputy, but I always had respect for corrections and law enforcement growing up,” said Leahy.

Her recently retired uncle Deputy W. Sheriff spurred her interested in the profession. “He would share the most intriguing jailhouse stories with our family and always seemed to enjoy his work.”

What sealed the deal for Leahy were the excellent benefits, retirement options, and the respected administration at Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Her co-workers are an added bonus.

“The countless deputies and civilian staff who I have worked with over the years, I consider to be family,” she said of their unbreakable bond. “And the people in the community who recognize and appreciate us and openly show us support.”

She feels a great sense of pride when a community member thanks her for her service. “The community is really what it’s all about.”

In honor of Nick Sheahan, who tragically passed away in 2004, more than 50 anglers took to the surrounding waters of Islamorada to honor him and reel in dolphin, wahoo, tuna, and more. The winning dolphin, caught by Michael Govea, weighed in at 41 pounds.

The tournament raises money for graduating seniors of Coral Shores High School. Last year the tournament awarded $2,000 scholarships to 15 graduates. So far, nearly $200,000 has been raised.

t’s often said issues in the Florida Keys can some way or another be drawn back to affordable housing – or a lack thereof.

Part of the problem is also a lack of affordable housing units, permits which allow developers to build.

In an effort to stymie the housing crisis, Gov. Rick Scott last week directed the Department of Economic Opportunity to allow 1,300 new building permits for workforce housing throughout the Florida Keys.

Local governments that choose to participate in the initiative will work with DEO to amend their comprehensive plans to allow for additional building permits. Initially, each municipality can apply for 300 at a time to ensure the permits are spread out all over the Keys.

“Pre-Hurricane Irma, we were hearing about workforce housing and post-Irma, we’re exacerbated. We’re on our knees,” said state Rep. The units will be used for either multi-family units or single-family units. The income level has yet to be determined.

“Where we really have a hole is in the moderate/median income – the salary range for a school teacher, first responder, bank teller, etcetera,” said Marathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron.

“That seems to be where we lost so many of our people after the hurricane.”

Part of the development agreement will be that tenants evacuate within 48 hours of a mandatory evacuation, should the need arise. The need for timely evacuation of residents from Monroe County is part of the reason the development is restricted in the first place. The governor will present the move to the Florida Cabinet on May 15.

The 48-hour window in advance of tropical storm winds is when non-residents, visitors, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, live-aboards and military personnel have to leave. Thirty hours in advance of tropical storm winds is when phased evacuation of permanent residents begins.

“Housing is the top issue facing our community. It’s hard to hold a job down or keep a family going strong if you don’t have a roof over your head,” Raschein said.

Any increase in affordable housing allocations from the state is definitely a good thing, said Marathon City Councilman Mark Senmartin.

“Like most things, however, the devil is in the details. We need to address our concerns and have the best plan for our residents in case of a hurricane,” he said.
