ive candidates are vying for the District 2 seat for Monroe County Commission. Debbie Halama, a Republican, is the latest to announce.

by George Neugent who has announced a run for Marathon Council, is being sought by Halama, Michelle Coldiron (R), Eleanor McAdams (NPA – no party affiliation), Thomas “Tommy” Ryan (D), and Charles Weitzel (R). District 4 incumbent David Rice (R) faces Vicki Tashjian (NPA). BOCC candidates must live in a certain geographical area to be eligible to run, but are elected countywide.

Halama (pronounced “halma”) said it’s concerns about representation that prompted to her run. That, and car ride talks with her two teenage sons from their home on Big Pine Key to Key West Collegiate Academy. “It went beyond ‘What happened at school today,’ to conversation centered around politics,” she said.

Halama has been a Keys Realtor since 2004, although she spent time in the Keys during the ’90s working at local banks. She also has owned Molly’s Pawn and More on Big Pine Key since 2012.

“What I hear from my neighbors and the business community is that local government is not listening to them over the last several years, but this really came to light after Hurricane Irma,” she said. “It’s a lot of work, and I’ve done a lot of research, but I’m in it to the finish line; 100 percent into it.”

Her other issues include the expediency of debris removal in the hardest hit area of the Keys, continued canal cleanup and the lack of proper fire equipment to protect the environmentally sensitive plots on Big Pine Key. (For other candidate coverage, please see keysweekly.com.)

hat happens to travel trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as another hurricane season approaches?

People still living in them postHurricane Irma may have the opportunity to stay living in them, at least in Marathon, for an extended period as long as work on their permanent home continues.

“It’ll go case by case,” said City Planner George Garrett at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. He said trailer residents may be able to stay another 18 months, to be determined by city staff in individual letters sent out in the coming weeks.

“There is still a real human need and whatever we can do to be easier on people as they rebuild, I’m all for it,” said Vice Mayor John Bartus.

“I have very little care for what FEMA thinks is best for our residents. I’m not in any rush to have people kicked out of their trailers or make them move,” said Councilman Mark Senmartin.

The council moved to approve a requirement that those living in the roughly 100 FEMA trailers still in Marathon evacuate in the event of a hurricane this season, which starts June 1.

As for the trailers no longer being lived in, they are regularly being moved out of the Keys, a point of contention among some county officials who think the shelter is still necessary in unincorporated Monroe.

“We continue to lose the trailers, rather than keeping them here and using them for people who need them,” said County Commissioner George Neugent. “With no responses to memos to FEMA, wanting to get some answers to questions, they’re just ignoring us now and doing what they’ve been doing and sending them up to Homestead and auctioning them off. I and several others have gotten to the point of frustration and feeling our efforts are futile.”

ALSO TUESDAY: Council approved of a housing project spearheaded by Anchor Inn owner Josh Mothner. He is going to build four affordable housing units on the hotel property at MM 51 oceanside.

T.J. Henderson, director of the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport, said an environmental impact study is underway to move the airport runway northwest, which would require the hardwood hammock to be cut back by about 40 feet, to be completed by 2024. He said there will not be any visual change or noise impact for those living in the neighborhood behind the airport.

CLARIFICATION Summer camps at Marathon’s Dolphin Research Center: Dolphin Day Camp is completely full for both ages 7-9 and 10-12, but the DRC is taking stand-by applications at this time. Teen Marine Mammal Care and Basic Training DolphinLab is part of the DRC’s Teen DolphinLab program for 15- to 17-year-olds, and is an overnight, residential program as well. It is the third class in the teen series, and there is a prerequisite of successful completion of both Teen Basic DolphinLab and Teen Intermediate DolphinLab to take the training course. T

here’s a new football coach in town … well, sort of.

Mac Childress has been Marathon High School’s offensive coordinator since 2014 and was special teams coordinator before that. When then-head football coach Anthony Paul Davis accepted a head football coaching job in March at Tohopekaliga High School and headed north for Kissimmee, Childress knew he should apply.

After all, he’s seen what this team is made of and was there with them through it all after Hurricane Irma destroyed the home field and some of the players’ homes.

The Dolphins never played on the home field again last fall, yet dominated on the road through November to seal their first winning season since 2007, ending with a record of 7-2 and winning the Southeastern Football Conference (now the South Florida Conference) championship against Ransom Everglades, 47-8.

“From going through a hurricane, to not knowing if we were going to have a season, and playing virtually every game on the road… This group of players came together like a family and had a season they will remember for a lifetime,” he said. “These guys were fun to coach and super exciting to watch.”

This year, they’ll play all but one game at home.

Full name? Nickname? George McDuffie Childress III and “Mac.” Family life: Married to Teri Childress and we have a daughter, 8, a son, 2, and a son on the way.

How long have you been coaching at Marathon? This will be my eighth year coaching varsity football.

What’s your goal this season? To be conference champions again and hopefully make the playoffs.

What would you say about your predecessor, Coach Paul Davis? I couldn’t tell you enough great things about him.

We’re going to be great friends for the rest of our lives and he taught me a lot about running a program.

What’s your favorite thing about coaching football? Molding young men into men and teaching character and seeing these kids develop. It’s such a gratifying profession. Coaching football teaches you so many life lessons. You can learn on the field about perseverance and working hard for something you really want.

What’s your handiest skill? Playing guitar and drums.

First off, I’m eating a porterhouse steak medium rare with a loaded baked potato. In walks Shaquille O’Neal. I would love to hear stories from his playing days, and I’ve always enjoyed sarcastic wit. He would probably eat my steak though …

Who are your favorite professional teams (NFL or college or both)?

NFL’s Chicago Bears and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (my dad’s alma mater).

Who has been your biggest inspiration in life? Definitely my father. He is the smartest and most modest man I know. He has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, yet never would boast about himself. He also was very talented as an athlete and a musician. Not to mention his hilarious sense of humor! Growing up he would help me with my studies, sports, music, and anything else I wanted to pursue. Now having kids of my own, I hope to be the kind of father he was and still is.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Pro athlete or rock n’ roll drummer for a worldtouring band. In my mind, I had options.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Marathon Middle School? I love this small school/community and being able to build positive relationships with the students that will last well beyond their time in my classroom.

Who inspired you to play football? The ’85 Bears (and the Super Bowl Shuffle).

Who is the greatest football player who ever lived? The GOAT, if you will (Barry Sanders).

TECH TOOL HELPS PREPARE FOR STATE TESTS

A

group of educators in the Monroe County School District credits Istation, an educational technology tool created by a Dallas-based company, for student performance improvements as they prepare for the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) statewide standardized tests.

With Istation, teachers can monitor students’ learning achievements as they deliver targeted instruction. Istation’s on-demand assessments provide lessons based on students’ individual performance.

“I love that [Istation] tiers my students and provides individualized interventions that I can use to help my struggling students,” said Jessica Lockwood, a third-grade teacher at Poinciana Elementary School in Key West. Her class uses Istation Reading every week during reading rotations.

A recent study conducted by the Morgridge International Reading Center at the University of Central Florida confirmed that student results on Istation assessments can predict performance on the FSA. “Istation has been a very successful tool for our very youngest readers,” said Kelly Brower, literacy coach at Plantation Key School (pre-K through eighth grade) and Coral Shores High School in Tavernier.

Even advanced students are benefitting, Brower noted, as the district’s Tier 1 students have continued to grow in both reading and math. Brower said Istation’s detailed data on individual student performance allows teachers to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in both reading and math.

Caitlin Nicklaus, Elementary MTSS Coordinator and Academic Interventionist at Horace O’Bryant School, said Istation’s data was very helpful in the classroom. “What I most appreciate about Istation is the variety of reports it provides,” she said.

e are not adversaries. We want to help,” said Mandy Rodriguez of the Dolphin Research Center, flanked by three grandchildren who attend Stanley Switlik Elementary.

“Please don’t think it’s not going to happen in this town. We are just as susceptible. We are a great group of parents, willing to help with anything.”

Rodriguez was addressing the Monroe County School Board on May 8 in the media center of the Marathon High School. Although school security was not on the agenda, about 60 adults and 40 children showed up to speak on the matter.

Most voiced concerns about what the school board can do NOW to improve security, especially at Stanley Switlik Elementary, which is slated to be rebuilt in the next two years. Although 4-foot temporary fences and a new door funnel visitors into the front office, local mother Alison Sayer noted that they don’t have to show identification. “They just open the door and walk in. The question is what will happen with security between now and when the new school is built.”

Although the school board has a policy about not addressing input during citizens’ comments, Chairman Bobby Highsmith made an exception after about a dozen had spoken.

Board member Mindy Conn said the discussions on school safety are going on … behind closed doors. “If we announce what we are doing, there’s not a lot of safety and security in that. Some of our measures will be obvious and other things we are currently doing you may not notice if you are walking around school.” She added that the mental health prong of the state initiative in the wake of the Parkland shootings is of the most importance.

School Superintendent Mark Porter said, “Immediacy is a problem. There are things that can be done over the summer, but that doesn’t make people feel good about these last two weeks of school.”

Stanley Switlik PTO secretary Catherine Dunn presented 364 petition signatures from parents in support of adding a school resource officer, metal detector and a social worker.

She said those signatures represent the parents of almost every child in the student body of about 550 children. Only 15 were against the use of a metal detector, two wanted to know more about the detector, and four didn’t want a social worker.

In March, the PTO sent out a letter to all first responders in the area, asking them to visit school as often as possible not only to interact with the children, but also as a show of security. Since the plea, representatives of the sheriff’s office, county and city fire rescue, Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Commission have all made a point of visiting campus at the beginning of the day, lunch or recess … even the P.E. class.

Most parents who spoke offered to volunteer or donate money to help beef up security.

“I just had a kid and I want my child to be protected. You can put up something that prevents kids from stealing books,” said Phil Ivkovich, gesturing at the entrance to the library with a security portal, “but you’re not going to put up metal detectors?”

Governor directs 1,300 housing units for Florida Keys KATIE ATKINS

t’s often said issues in the Florida Keys can some way or another be drawn back to affordable housing – or a lack thereof.

Part of the problem is also a lack of affordable housing units, permits which allow developers to build.

In an effort to stymie the housing crisis, Gov. Rick Scott last week directed the Department of Economic Opportunity to allow 1,300 new building permits for workforce housing throughout the Florida Keys.

Local governments that choose to participate in the initiative will work with DEO to amend their comprehensive plans to allow for additional building permits. Initially, each municipality can apply for 300 at a time to ensure the permits are spread out all over the Keys.

“Pre-Hurricane Irma, we were hearing about workforce housing and post-Irma, we’re exacerbated. We’re on our knees,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein. “This is the state hearing our cry and putting forth something that is certainly creative and something they have jurisdiction over. I think that’s a great sign.”

The units will be used for either multi-family units or single-family units. The income level has yet to be determined.

“Where we really have a hole is in the moderate/median income – the salary range for a school teacher, first responder, bank teller, etcetera,” said Marathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron.

“That seems to be where we lost so many of our people after the hurricane.”

Part of the development agreement will be that tenants evacuate within 48 hours of a mandatory evacuation, should the need arise. The need for timely evacuation of residents from Monroe County is part of the reason the development is restricted in the first place. The governor will present the move to the Florida Cabinet on May 15.

The 48-hour window in advance of tropical storm winds is when non-residents, visitors, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, live-aboards and military personnel have to leave. Thirty hours in advance of tropical storm winds is when phased evacuation of permanent residents begins.

“Housing is the top issue facing our community. It’s hard to hold a job down or keep a family going strong if you don’t have a roof over your head,” Raschein said.

Any increase in affordable housing allocations from the state is definitely a good thing, said Marathon City Councilman Mark Senmartin.

“Like most things, however, the devil is in the details. We need to address our concerns and have the best plan for our residents in case of a hurricane,” he said.

Aaaahh, Mother’s Day, a day that can be full of joy and surprise or fraught with expectation and disappointment. If you are a mom you know there are Vegas odds that it can go either way, from the best day ever to “meh.” So to help out you poor dads and children fretting over the big day, here is the Weekly’s Top List of Do’s and Don’ts for Mother’s Day. —Weekly Staff report DO:

DON’T

Do first thing in the morning sneak out of the bedroom, shut door quietly, and put sleepy kids immediately in front of TV or iPad and make coffee, QUIETLY, and remain perfectly still until she awakens.

Don’t plan a brunch that includes children under the age of 8. Really, it’s equivalent to taking howler monkeys shopping at Tiffany’s. It’s any mom’s worst nightmare.

Do allow her to watch television uninterrupted. Yep, one solid hour without “Mo-om (two syllables), “did you know there is a planet called Uranus?”

Don’t at any point lie down on the bed or couch, turn on sports and pretend the Mother’s Day is over after breakfast at 9:15 a.m. The next eight hours will not go well.

Do load and unload the dishwasher (both), fold clean laundry (check the dryer) and vacuum (it’s in the side closet). Enough said. And under no circumstances ask where anything belongs; how long have you lived there?

Don’t leave the bathroom without loo paper. Just this one day, unhitch the thingy and put on a new roll. Hint: found under the sink or side closet and do not put on upside down please. You can do it, she believes in you.

Do have homemade crafts on hand from the kids; but not you, no, you husbands and dads must have mimosas and flowers on hand.

Don’t give her candy for Mother’s Day if she’s on a diet. Or, maybe you should. You know best, but approach this situation with extreme caution and be ready to beat a FAST retreat if things head south.

Do stop random strangers, or semifamiliar acquaintances, and extravagantly praise your mom/wife in loud tones. “My wife makes the best spaghetti! She remembers to schedule oil changes! She is the best thing that ever happened to me! I would be dead without her!”

Don’t hand her the phone with your mother on it. Nope, like sticking two Colombian drug cartel leaders in the same room. No, the glare will incinerate you on the spot.

OBITUARY

Sara Hazel Roche 1922-2018 Sara Hazel (Alexander) Roche passed on peacefully to her Lord, May 3, 2018 in Key West, Florida.

Hazel was born Nov. 11, 1922 in West Grove, Pennsylvania and grew up in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. She was a graduate of the 1940 class of Octorara High School in Atglen, Pennsylvania, and later attended West Chester State Teachers College, receiving her teaching degree.

After college graduation, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and served as a teletype operator until the end of World War II. She met and later married Orlando Roche of Key West, Florida during a visit to her uncle serving in the Navy there. They lived briefly in Key West and moved to Marathon in 1952, where they became active in local civic organizations and the United Methodist Church, where she was a soprano in the choir. She loved to crochet, bird watching and in her later years reading. She was a teacher at Sue M. Moore Elementary and worked in the school system.

Her husband Orlando predeceased her in June 1992. Her younger brother Arnold Alexander and his wife Maryalice currently reside in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her loving son and daughter Ben Roche and Cheryl Flint. She also leaves three loving grandchildren Jared and Erika Roche and Evonne (Flint) Thomas. She leaves four loving greatgrandchildren, Jasmine and Jayden Thomas and Peyton and Davis Roche along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Celebration of Life was held on May 9 at the New Life Church in Marathon, followed by internment in the Key West Cemetery on Thursday, May 10 at 11 a.m.

ink and blue giraffes, diaper cakes, Pampers, and ribbons will decorate Key West Woman’s Club for a Saturday, May 19 baby shower. But this isn’t just any baby shower. The members of the historic club have been collecting items for 30 local women who are a part of Wesley House Family Service’s Healthy Families program.

“Sometimes new or expectant mothers are in certain circumstances where they don’t have a traditional baby shower,” said the club’s president, Dawn Martin. “We are trying to make their outlook a little brighter.”

Expectant mothers in the Healthy Families program, which is a free, voluntary, five-year program that provides families information on parenting and child development, will be celebrated at the event.

“The community has already started rallying around this event,” said Martin. She was chatting with a neighbor the other day and mentioned the shower. “She was so excited to buy baby items and to help celebrate the new and expecting moms.”

The members have already collected new baby bottles, onesies, teething rings, diapers and more. But they are still looking for new items like socks, blankets, bibs, changing pads, diaper bags, washcloths, crib sheets – and you can never have enough diapers …

“People will help you do amazing things; you’ve just got to ask,” said Martin. The club’s mission is dedicated service. Even though a lot of the membership has already left for season, the women have sent gift cards and packages to help the new moms. “I heard some of the women’s stories about their circumstances, and some of them just don’t have a support system.”

Martin added that it would be a beautiful thing if five years from now they could host a “graduation party” for the moms and kids in the program.

“We want the community to come out and help us make something beautiful happen,” she said.

Florida Keys Historian Tom Hambright said when the Key West Woman’s Club first started out 100 years ago, it was known as the “Mother’s Club.”

That pulls this baby shower around full circle.

Buddy and Francesca Johnston of Sign Boss of Marathon have welcomed Blakely Annabella Johnston to the world. She was born on April 26, 2018 at 10:42 p.m. at Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West. She weighed 9 pounds and 10 ounces and measured 20 inches long. “She’s an adorable little chubster. Everyone’s happy and healthy,” the parents reported. VOLUNTEER ARMY Monroe County Emergency Management is creating a “Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps” that will be made up of volunteers with a variety of talents and skills who would like to help in time of emergency in the Keys, such as a hurricane.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps is invited to attend the inaugural meeting on Monday, May 21, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Marathon Government Center.

Her recently retired uncle Deputy W. Sheriff spurred her interested in the profession. “He would share the most intriguing jailhouse stories with our family and always seemed to enjoy his work.”

What sealed the deal for Leahy were the excellent benefits, retirement options, and the respected administration at Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Her co-workers are an added bonus.

“The countless deputies and civilian staff who I have worked with over the years, I consider to be family,” she said of their unbreakable bond. “And the people in the community who recognize and appreciate us and openly show us support.”

She feels a great sense of pride when a community member thanks her for her service. “The community is really what it’s all about.”

NEW CORAL DISEASE SPREADING ‘Unknown pathogen’ moving south through Florida Reef tract GABRIEL SANCHEZ

R

eports of widespread coral disease in Lower Keys reefs, and summer heat coming, could spell trouble for remaining healthy coral systems, say local researchers tracking the event.

“As of several weeks ago, researchers have documented diseased coral on Looe Key Reef,” said Keys Marine Lab’s Cindy Lewis. “We have been monitoring identifiable colonies, and one particular colony without disease at all, that now have disease.”

Back in late 2014, coral disease incidents were reported near Key Biscayne by staff of the state Department of Environmental Protection and area scientists. In a year’s time, nearly 55 linear miles of reef experienced widespread disease, according to the environmental agency. By 2016-17 the disease continued to spread as far north as Palm Beach County and south to Lower Matecumbe.

“While the coral disease outbreak is unprecedented, so is the collaborative response to it,” said Sarah Fangman, superintendent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. “We are working with Florida Department of Environmental Protection and dozens of partners in taking a multi-faceted approach. It is an aggressive, coordinated response to identify the pathogen and experiment with a variety of management strategies to combat it.”

The mysterious disease has not yet been given a name, but its symptoms resemble other reef diseases that cause white bands or spots to appear on corals, said Lewis. The whitening that happens with this particular disease is actually coral tissue dying, not to be confused with bleaching, which is caused by photosynthetic algae leaving the coral.

It’s also been “hop scotching around” reef colonies, said Lewis.

Not every reef is affected. At the beginning of the year, divers with DEP and FWC confirmed the disease had made it to Sombrero Reef. Of the several reefs in between Sombrero and Looe Key reef, some have the

disease and others do not, said Lewis.

Fangman said coral disease outbreaks are not uncommon. However, this event is unique due to its large geographic range, extended duration, high rates of mortality and the number of species affected.

“Nearly half of the stony coral species found on the Florida Reef Tract have been affected,” she said, “including the primary reef-building species in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

“The exact cause and contributing factors for this event will take more time to identify,” she said. “In the meantime, addressing other known coral stressors, such as pollution and sedimentation, will increase the ability of the corals to recover. Identifying disease-resistant types of corals is also a component of disease management.”

Since December, Lewis and researchers at Keys Marine Lab’s onshore facility have been working to find treatment methods for corals affected by the mysterious disease.

Researchers have been using temperature-controlled sea water tanks to study the disease. This allows them to conduct treatment trials in a controlled environment. The lab, on Long Key, is part of the state university system which hosts students and professors who are researching marine subjects.

The disease event has broadened the research Keys Marine Lab was conducting on pillar coral to include other corals.

What research has found is that affected corals seem to fall into “tiers of susceptibility,” said Lewis.

The first tier — pillar, elliptical star, and maze coral — are very susceptible, she said. The second tier is boulder and brain corals. The third tier, star coral, which researchers believed was more resistant, is now also showing signs of disease.

Clemson University doctoral candidate Kylie Smith first came to the Keys to research Caribbean Spiny Lobster.

Now, she’s working on coral restoration and transplanting with research partner Carah Noonan, a graduate student also from Clemson.

“From what we have been able to see, it does appear some species are more susceptible than others.

Staghorn coral is susceptible to many things, so they are the one that are getting a lot of attention studying disease resistance,” said Smith.

However, each shows signs of disease in slightly different ways. In a lot of cases, the disease has a characteristic translucent tissue that appears on coral in the form of a band or circular bullseye, said Lewis.

In terms of treatments, Keys Marine Lab have been testing epoxies, modeling clay, and dental paste laced with chlorine powder on corals in the tanks. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is supporting the coral studies by helping obtain corals to study. Researchers have also experimented with small targeted treatments of antibiotics, and have found success, though Lewis said what’s needed is a treatment method that can be used in the wild.

Since 2015, researchers from every level of governments, universities, and conservation organizations have been responding to the disease outbreak.

“There are a lot of things that we don’t know at the moment,” said Lewis.

“What we do know is that the disease line has been moving from the Upper Keys down to the Lower Keys. Last summer we were told it was off Tavernier, around Alligator Reef lighthouse.”

Smith and other researchers are not exactly sure what causes some coral to be more susceptible than others.

It’s thought that the less susceptible to heat corals are, the more susceptible they are to disease.

“There is a lot of ongoing research into those tradeoffs,” Smith said.

“Because of the warming events in the Keys in 2014 and 2015, it’s suggested that this disease outbreak is strongly related to those heating events.”

Another hot summer could spell trouble for affected coral colonies.

“Research shows a lot of these pathogens are more active in warmer water. Another warm summer would mean the fifth year in a row these corals are under stress,” said Lewis.

Recreational divers are encouraged to use the SEAFAN and C-OCEAN reporting systems to report any biological events they encounter while diving. These biological events include reef bleaching and coral disease.

irector Michael Chaplin uses the discreet phrase: “scatalogical humor.”

His producer, Marilyn Tempest, speaks much more plainly.

“This play contains thermonuclear levels of flatulence jokes,” she said.

“But there’s no profanity,” said Chaplin.

“But plenty of idiocy,” Tempest replied, immediately.

And just that tidbit of conversation ABOUT a play, reveals all the funny tension OF the play — about masculinity and tradition and, yes, moonshine.

Oh, and some porcupine urine.

So expect some fart funnies, and plenty of other manly humor in Marathon Community Theatre’s current production of “Escanaba in Da Moonlight.” The curtain goes up on Thursday, May 10, with performances continuing through Friday, May 18.

The show stars all our favorites — Brian Witte is fabulous as the patriarch of the family; Devin Clarke, his eldest son, is the one who has yet to shoot a buck (this is a big, sensitive, purple-pulsing plot point); Marty Dillis

plays Remnar, the other son, and he is disgustingly funny in all the right ways; and Jim Kelly plays the wildly unbalanced Jimmer Negamanee, a hunter and family friend. Also making appearances are Norma Jean Kelly as Wolf Moon Dance, a psychic and wife to the eldest son, and Jerry Nussenblatt as the slightly off-kilter forest ranger.

The two-act play is set in the U.P. (Upper Peninsula) and becomes almost a character in and of itself for the distinct personalities of the so-called “Yoopers” of Michigan, and their singular way of speaking.

The set is rustic-hunting-camp to perfection, from the mason jars of moonshine to the bunk bed and the vintage photo of the best family hunter on self-authored record. The fully realized set is exciting to see, as this is the first full production at MCT since Hurricane Irma did its best to wreck the stage. Chaplin, in addition to directing,

is responsible for the set design. He has some parallels to draw between the big hunting trip traditions and the Keys’ fishing addiction.

“I know guys that won’t go out fishing unless they have that one specific lure onboard; even if it doesn’t come out of the tackle box, they have to have it in their bags,” Chaplin said.

Although he’s a veteran of the stage, this is Chaplin’s first time in the director’s chair. Naturally, he has a new appreciation for the role.

“It’s been an interesting experience on this side of the stage,” he said. “And Boomer (Jim Kelly) and Devin (Clarke) have been a tremendous help.”

The show runs Thursday to Saturday, May 10-12 and Thursday and Friday, May 17-18. Curtain is at 8 p.m.

onroe County Fire Rescue (MCFR) is participating with firefighters from Argentina in an exchange program sponsored by Rotary International.

Six volunteer firefighters from the Buenos Aires region spent two weeks in South Florida visiting fire rescue operations in Monroe, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Last week, the Argentinians were hosted for two days by Monroe County Fire Rescue, with accommodations at Station 13 on Big Pine Key. In Argentina, most firefighters are volunteers. The six men in the exchange program spent one day at Monroe County’s new Joe London Training Facility on Crawl Key, where they learned several techniques.

One technique was bailing out of a burning building by going headfirst down a ladder, swinging the body around and sliding to the ground. This survival technique allows for firefighters to exit a building rapidly when conditions deteriorate and it is not possible to leave the building the same way they entered, said Charles Mather, Monroe County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief of Training.

The firefighters also learned “VEIS” – vent, enter, isolate and search. This is a technique used when there is a known occupant in a known area who can’t get out, from a small child to an elderly person who is bedridden.

And, the Argentine volunteer firefighters learned pump operations and hose handling on MCFR’s engines.

The group also visited MCFR headquarters in Marathon and fire operations at Naval Air Station Key West.

On May 14-26, a group of six firefighters from South Florida will travel to Argentina. The group includes Mather and Monroe County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Francisco Perez Diaz.

Rotary International District 4895 from Argentina and District 6990 in South Florida joined efforts to have the firefighters participate in an exchange program.

“We have a group of firefighters that will share their expertise, challenges, strengths and limitations to find better solutions for safeguarding our communities,” said the program’s leaders. “This program will make a difference.”

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Ms. Heyl’s calculus classes have helped prepare me for the rigor of college coursework. There is little room to slack off in her classes since the material is challenging and she holds all of her students to such a high standard.

What advice would you give underclassmen? I would advise underclassmen to start thinking about their plans for the future. It’s important to consider college and career options early on so you have a plan when it comes time to start college applications.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MHS? I would like to be remembered by faculty and students as someone who worked hard to attain academic success.

What are your plans after high school? After high school, I will most likely attend the University of Florida and major in biology with a pre-med intent.

t seems like just yesterday Elise Mucha bought Brutus Seafood in Marathon, but in July it will have been two years since the Chicago native bought the seafood restaurant at MM 50.5 bayside from Bruce and Letty Irwin.

In the two years since Mucha said goodbye to her medical sales business, Brutus has maintained its reputation as one of the most popular spots for fresh, local seafood in the heart of the Florida Keys. It’s also a great lunch spot.

The retail seafood case inside the shop is small and doesn’t hold much, so fresh fish is constantly being brought in, and sold out.

Fresh hunks of tuna and filets of yellowtail snapper and black grouper were on display Tuesday morning.

On the menu, the most popular sellers are the fish tacos, shrimp tacos and The Brutus, which was on the original menu created by the Irwins. It’s fried mahi mahi with roasted jalapeño cilantro sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion on a toasted sub roll. Locals swear by it.

Tacos are served with lettuce, shredded cheese, pico de gallo and a creamy garlic cilantro sauce with the fish or shrimp either grilled, blackened or fried.

Sides served include cole slaw, black bean salad or potato salad. Add French fries, spicy fries or sweet potato fries for a dollar more.

Mucha said Brutus baskets are popular too. Pick from fried conch, the fish of the day, shrimp, or bring your own catch and have it fried, blackened or grilled with fries and black bean salad, cole slaw or a side salad.

There are subs and salads too, like the Vaca Key salad: artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, tomato, red onion, cucumber and asiago cheese over spring greens. It’s served with a sweet soy vinaigrette, which adds the perfect kick.

Brutus Seafood is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is at 6950 Overseas Highway in Marathon.

Pick shrimp or fish grilled, blackened or fried, stuffed into soft flour tortillas and covered in lettuce, shredded cheese, pico de gallo and a creamy garlic cilantro sauce.
