The international community collectively held its breath this week when the United States, the United Kingdom and France launched missiles at military targets in Syria following an alleged chemical attack on its own citizens. International inspectors suspect sarin gas was used. The alleged attack is disputed by Russia, which has positioned itself as a supporter of Syrian President Bashar alAssad and his regime. After political posturing from President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin over chemical experts having access to the site, the geopolitical melodrama seems to continue. DEVELOPERS QUALIFY TO BUILD IN ISLAMORADA Habitat, Leben Family can save time for affordable projects GABRIEL SANCHEZ

slamorada’s Village Council voted 4-0 to add Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys and Leben Family Limited Partnership to its list of pre-qualified developers. The addition allows the village to assign specific development projects to either to complete.

Having a list of pre-qualified professional services for affordable housing allows the village to save time and choose the best economical fit, said Village Manager Seth Lawless. The staff’s Finance Department already keeps an existing “library” of prequalified professional services.

“We wanted to do the same thing for affordable-home contractors. To create a library of builders and developers that could build affordable housing projects, because we have two or three in the queue,” said Lawless.

In January, the village issued a request for qualifications for housing development services for affordable and workforce housing. After 30 days, only Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys and Leben Family Limited Partnership had submitted their qualifications. The village staff has already

discussed its pending projects to gauge the level of interest each builder has, said Lawless.

“We discussed the Woods and Gardena projects specifically with (Leben Family Limited Partnership,)” he said. “We encouraged them to develop ideas for the project and to come back to us later and discuss those further.

They do a lot of rehab work right now; most of their multifamily developments have been in the Midwest. They just purchased a piece of property in Lower Matecumbe (where) they are exploring development.”

Habitat for Humanity being added as a prequalified developer in Islamorada signals a big step for the organization’s mission of constructing affordable and workforce housing,

particularly in the village. Nearly all the homes built by Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys have been constructed in Key Largo. The organization has also begun exploring ways to incentivize subcontractors to join their ongoing projects.

“We’re working on a joint effort with CBT Construction to reach out in the community and find other willing subcontractors in all forms of construction who want to work with us to build affordable housing and pass them on to homeowners and renters,” said Jack Neidbalski, Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys executive director.

The village will now proceed with the required steps leading up to signing non-exclusive continuing service agreements with both entities.

UPPER KEYS HISTORY North Key Largo’s The Anglers Club came to fruition as a result of North Dakota’s Jack Graham, who discovered the area’s excellent fishing in the early 1900s. His 40-acre property was sold to the Roney Investment Company, operators of Coral Gables’ prestigious Biltmore Hotel and Miami’s Roney Plaza, in 1932.

Initially developed into the Florida Year Round Club, the property was sold to the CAMRAY Corporation in 1946 and renamed the Anglers Club.

President Herbert Hoover was one of its first members. Guests of the Anglers Club were transported from Miami in luxury, relaxing in the relative comfort of a trailer-sized portable resort room or via the Auto-Gyro pictured flying above the tree line.

Not quite an airplane and not quite a helicopter, the Auto-Gyro was capable of taking off and landing like a helicopter and flying at a safe, low speed flight. First developed in 1920

A seasonably hot morning set the scene for Chi Sigma sorority’s first-ever Whale Harbor/Wahoos Bridge Run on April 14.

The spoof race drew 83 runners who trekked across Whale Harbor’s iconic bridge to raise money for scholarships Chi Sigma awards to graduating seniors. The first $1,000 raised will go to a scholarship honoring late Coral Shores High School graduate Holly Given.

At the sound of the horn, some racers took off sprinting while others took their precious time. One even hauled rolling luggage packed with refreshments. Runners were required to retrieve a doughnut from the north end of the bridge and bring a piece back to the finish line. With the course a brisk 1.06 kilometers long, expect to see a few ‘1.06’ bumper stickers proudly on display sooner than later.

High school junior wins 7 Mile Bridge Run

n Saturday morning, at 8:01 a.m., Aydan Child, 17, was the first finisher of the 37th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. He is the first local to win it, the first teenager to win it, and his family history is inextricably intertwined with the race, too.

“My aunt Denis Pankow directed the race for 23 years,” said Aydan.

Because of his family’s continued involvement with the race, nearly the entire clan was there to meet him at the finish line.

“I’ve worked the finish line since 1983,” said Denise, adding that Aydan’s mom, Amy Sollie, was standing at her side when Aydan crossed the line first with a time of 40:01. “We are so proud.” His uncle Chris Pankow and father Dana Child were in the pace car just ahead of Aydan and his sister Hannah, 19, finished the race 14th in her age group.

Aydan is no stranger to running.

In 2016, he was one of the leaders of Marathon High School track team that placed second in the state. That year he had a personal best of 17:24 in the cross country 5k. In 2017, the team made it to state competition again (they placed sixth) and he PR’d with a time of 16:54. At last year’s 7 Mile Bridge Run he was fifth overall with a time of 42:54.

“We are so proud of him,” said MHS Athletic Director Teresa Konrath.

“It was a great moment,” said race director Ginger Sayer.

How did you feel at the start of the race? I felt confident. I had done a bunch of training and I’m in great shape. I knew I only had to beat a couple of guys like last year’s winner Josh Peterson of Boca Raton.

What were you thinking about during the run? I thought about keeping my pace and continuing to keep the lead. I was excited. In fact, when I hit the 10k mark I was just grinning from ear to ear.

How many years have you run the race? Since I was 9 years old, so this is my eighth race.

What shoes did you race in? My Nike Zoom Pegasus 33s.

What’s the significance of the shirt? The mother of one of my track teammates just passed away. Purple was her favorite color.

Race day nutrition? I had a Clif bar and a banana. The day before, I drank about a gallon and a half of water.

or the first time in its 20year history, the Afro Roots World Music Festival will include the Florida Keys on its list of South Florida scheduled performances. The festival’s maiden concert is set for Saturday, April 28 from 3 to 10:30 p.m. at the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District. Subsequent performances are planned for May 17-19 in Key West and June 2 in Key Largo.

“Although some of the effects of Hurricane Irma are still visible throughout the Florida Keys, the area is open for business and we intend to celebrate joyfully and accordingly,” said Jose Elias, founder and executive director of Community Arts and Culture (CAC).

“The Keys are a national treasure and we are excited and proud to be bringing the Afro Roots Fest to Islamorada April 28. We look forward to sharing the wonderful African diaspora with residents and out-of-the-area travelers alike.”

Some 50 international and local performers are slated to play the festival’s various shows. The Islamorada concert will feature the music of the Nag Champayons, Cortadito, and Grupo Barrio Abajo.

The Nag Champayons’ selfdescribed style of Afro Galactic/ Tropidelic incorporates a full range of effects to add a dose of psychedelia that lends the music a Mars Volta-ish feel. Grupo Barrio Abajo channels its long-standing heritage of Latin American and Colombian musical styles like cumbia, bullerengue, porro, and chandé.

slamorada is the “sport fishing capital of the world.” No one knows this claim to fishing fame better than the locals and fishing enthusiasts who flock from around the globe.

Islamorada may be the only place on Earth where it’s possible to catch a sailfish offshore and pursue bonefish, permit, and tarpon in just inches of water in the backcountry, all in the same day.

The big three are tarpon, bonefish, and permit. Any angler will tell you it is an accomplishment to land any one of these three, but doing it within 24 hours and completing an IGFA Grand Slam is an angler’s true claim to fame and dream come true.

All three fish have very different personalities and require specific strategy, technique and equipment.

Tarpon are easily among the best sport fish on the planet. These fish reach into the upper 200-pound class and with their bad attitudes, high flying aerobatics, and willingness to fight, these fish are truly made to disappoint even the most seasoned anglers. It is a true accomplishment to land one of these prehistoric giants.

The massive migration of these fish kicks off around the end of March, lasting for around the next hundred days. As the water temperature rises into the upper 70s we start to see these great giants appear on the flats.

This is where they can be stalked and sight casted as you watch the drama unfold.

Tarpon lore is captivating, from the stories of Scarface, the thankful tarpon of Robbie’s Marina, to the countless roads, towns, and businesses that make this great fish their poster children. Iconic fish bring iconic anglers.

I will always remember growing up in the Pacific Northwest watching 3m VHF videos with my father of Billy Pate, Lefty Kreh, and Andy Mills to name a few. Watching these men pioneer modern equipment against these giant beasts in a tropical paradise was what sent me to bed dreaming at night wondering if I will ever get my shot at the Silver King.

In recent years, the Bonefish Tarpon Trust has put out an exclusive summary for South Florida alone that each angler spends an average of over $200 a day and over $2,000 annually on the chances of hooking up on a tarpon. This report found that around 300,000 anglers try for these fish on average of about 10 days, which translates into more than $65 million of direct expenditures from tarpon anglers.

Supplemental expenditures were more than $45 million, for a total of some $110 million into the local economy, which creates well over 1,000 full-time positions and brings in $30 million to local wages and business owners. Tarpon truly is king in South Florida.

Tarpon handling guidelines and regulations are in place to ensure that we have these iconic fish in the generations to follow. Tarpon over 40 inches must remain in the water. If tarpon under 40 inches are removed, handle the fish supported horizontally, never handled by gill plate or hang vertically; also, return quickly to the water. Have large enough gear to beat the fish in a timely fashion; quickly fighting a fish ensures that the fish will have sufficient energy at time of release. Lastly use a single J hook or offset circle hook, never use trebles, to ensure minimum damage to the fish.

t won’t make your dog giggle and eat everything in the house – it’s not a Cheech and Chong kind of cannabinoid we’re talking about.

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, may help treat joint and muscle pain, anxiety, seizures, cancer side effects and behavior issues in both pets and their owners. There are CBDinfused treats, tablets and tinctures.

Florida is one of 46 states where CBD is legal, and it’s been popping up in health food stores and pet stores, touted as a natural and effective method for, as an example, relaxing a dog who has separation anxiety.

So how does it work?

CBD is derived from the cannabis plant as a compound, but does not cause feelings of euphoria caused by the most active ingredient in cannabis, THC. The two affect different receptors in the brain, said Keys Animal Hospital owner Dr. Mike Dunn.

Humans and animals have an endocannabinoid system which receives and translates signals from cannabinoids. In turn, the properties of CBD can help regulate sleep, immunesystem responses and pain.

It is not psychoactive and does not change the state of mind of the pet or person using it.

Food For Thought, a health store in the Gulfside Village Plaza in Marathon, sells CBD oil in various strengths for both pets and humans.

“It’s something that I’m recommending more and more. We’ve been using it as partial treatment for cats and dogs, and it’s been really good for aggression problems in male cats in particular,” Dunn said.

Partial treatment means CBD oil combined with medicine.

“I might prescribe amitriptyline for cats that are peeing where they’re not supposed to or fighting with their siblings, then add some CBD oil with that,” he said, adding that a benefit of CBD oil is that it does not sedate the animal or hurt its kidneys or liver in the long run.

Dunn said he does not have a favorite brand, but he’s been sending pet owners to Food For Thought in Marathon, where CBD oil is sold in different strengths for both pets and humans under the True brand name.

True CBD oil comes in dosages of 250 milligrams all the way up to 2,200 milligrams.

“My baseline is 250 milligrams per 1 ML,” Dunn said.

In simpler terms, cats can receive three or four drops a day of CBD oil, or 10 to 15 drops a day for a larger dog with anxiety.

CBD can help relieve: • Separation anxiety • Cancer side effects • Chemotherapy • Joint pain • Arthritis • Behavior issues • Attitude problems

“There are different strengths and we’re kind of playing around with that, starting with a low dosage and upping it over time,” he said.

“Catnip will make your cat higher than CBD will,” said Food For Thought employee Cassandra Dickson.

The health food store is in the Gulfside Village Plaza, MM 50 bayside.

When Hurricane Irma was approaching the Florida Keys in September, Keys Kritters pet store owner Robby Majeska opened the threebedroom, three-bathroom apartment above the Key Largo store to neighbors and friends.

Sixteen people brought seven dogs.

“There were pit bulls and a German shepherd, and let me tell you, it was loud,” Majeska said. “I gave them some Canni Bits (CBD-infused dog treats), and for two days, those dogs were nice and calm.”

Canni Bits are what Majeska calls entry-level and low-dose, around 30 milligrams. The treats take effect within an hour, lasting from eight to 10 hours.

CAMPAIGN SEASON Three file for election This November, Islamorada residents will head to polls with a lot of important decisions to make. Among other ballot items, they will elect the five members of its village council.

o far, three candidates have officially filed for council: David Purdo, Kenneth Davis, and incumbent Mike Forster. The three can now start collecting signatures for candidate petitions, and once they’ve set up their campaign account, can begin collecting contributions and making official expenditures.

All five of Islamorada’s village council members serve concurrent two-year terms, but at the Jan. 18 general meeting, council and staff discussed the idea of staggered terms.

Village staff were directed to prepare a referendum item for this year’s ballot to let voters to decide.

The village council is also tasked with choosing fellow members to serve a one-year terms as mayor and vice mayor. The mayor serves as ceremonial head of the village, but has no dayto-day role in village operations.

SEAT 2

Longtime Islamorada resident, David Purdo, entered the race for Seat 2 in March. Incumbent councilwoman Cheryl Meads currently holds the seat.

Meads defeated Purdo and David Boerner as a first time candidate in 2016. At time of press, no other candidates have filed for Seat 2.

If elected, Purdo has his sights set on expediting the development of more affordable/workforce housing.

“I think one of the most important issue we have, not only in the Village, but all of Monroe County, is workforce housing. Since Irma it’s gotten worse,” said Purdo. “Where are our police officers, nurses, workers, and fishing captain supposed to live? Some people can’t afford upwards of $2,400 in rent.

I sat on the Monroe county housing authority for a number of years, and saw that we have an issue and we need to solve it.”

SEAT 4

Kenneth Davis was the first to declare for village council back in January. He is looking to succeed Mayor Chris Sante, who will not seek re-election.

Davis said his three biggest items if elected are keeping Islamorada and its council strong and unified, increasing the policing presence of FWC officers, and simplifying the requirements for building in the village.

“I think we need a simplification of building rules and laws. Not an easing, only a simplification,” said Davis.

“People shouldn’t have to hire an attorney and architect to make a change to their home.”

SEAT 5

Incumbent Michael Foster is in his sixth consecutive year of serving as councilman, and has served a total of 10 years. The restaurateur turned public servant has spearheaded a number of initiatives in his most recent term, most notably water quality issues related to Florida Bay and affordable housing. Forster says the issue of collecting reimbursement money from FEMA is also of the highest priority to keep the village’s general fund balance stable. Forster is also in conversations with FWC and local law enforcement to add more officers to the village’s roadways and waterways.

For those interested in filing for village council, candidate packages are available by contacting Village Clerk Kelly Toth at (305) 664-6412. Qualifying dates for village council elections are from Aug. 14 – 21. The deadline to file to run for Village Council is Tuesday, Aug. 21 at noon.

Residents have to live in the Village of Islamorada to vote for council members. Voters can request absentee ballots be sent by mail from KeysElections.org and check their voter registration status prior to the election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Overall, the activities I participate in at Coral Shores are important to me because they offer me the opportunity to give back to the community as well as develop skills that are applicable to all aspects of life.

Which classes or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Although I have learned a variety of important lessons in all of my classes, the leadership class has best prepared me for life after high school. The leadership teacher, Ms. Rosenow, strives to teach valuable life lessons and instill leadership qualities. These lessons are applicable in all aspects of life. Through this class, I am honing my public speaking ability and gaining more confidence in my role as a leader.

What advice would you give underclassmen? I typically tell underclassmen to always strive for greatness. I remind them that success in all years of high school is the key to their future. Thus, I encourage younger students to challenge themselves; whether that be in academics, leadership roles, community service, clubs, or sports.

uch progress has been made when it comes to Hurricane Irma debris removal on land in the Florida Keys, but there are swaths of debris elsewhere, invisible to those of us without a dive tank.

In the eight months since the hurricane, debris like broken glass, traps, nets and lines has started to settle after the rough-and-tumble wrath of the storm.

Think fishing line wrapped around coral and sponges, or the flippers of sea turtles and manatees.

“There’s quite a bit of trash everywhere,” said Elena Rodriguez.

She’s on the Marine Sanctuary’s Marine Debris Working Group, and presented to the Advisory Council at its meeting on April 17 at the Hyatt Place in Marathon. Lisa Mongelia, who is also in the working group, was also on hand. Shortly after Irma, the group created Goal: Clean Seas Florida Keys.

“We’re going to have to send the divers out,” Rodriguez said.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is seeking applications from Blue Star certified dive operators to find and remove marine debris from target areas within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Approximately $80,000 total will be awarded for the removal efforts on a rolling basis; award amounts will range from $1,000 to $10,000.

All proposed projects are required to meet or exceed a 50 percent match.

For example, if $4,000 is requested from the foundation, a $2,000 match is expected to be contributed to the project, like staff and volunteer time, work performed, materials and services donated or cash.

In other news, Rhonda Haag, sustainability director for Monroe County, gave an update about canal cleanup post-Irma. About 100 canals throughout unincorporated Monroe were heavily affected by the storm, and 3,081 cubic yards of debris have been pulled out of Big Pine Key canals since the $6 million cleanup project started in February.

Total cost for canal cleanup will most likely be around $52 million, which is why the county is seeking funds from other sources.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has agreed to fund cleanup in unincorporated Monroe, Marathon and Islamorada at a total of $10 million, although cleanup has not started in the Middle and Upper Keys yet.

It’s on a reimbursement system, so Monroe County, Marathon and Islamorada will reimburse DEP, then seek reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Haag said.

ote Marine Laboratory’s CommunityBased Observations of Coastal Ecosystems and Assessment Network (C-OCEAN) program relies on boaters, divers, and fisherman to help detect largescale biological events that threaten the Key’s surrounding waters.

There is no special training or paperwork required to report an event. Things to report can include: fish kills, coral bleaching, coral disease, discoloration of water in canals, mammal strandings, pollution/ marine debris, invasive species, wildlife violations, algae blooms, and vessel grounds.

Scientists can use the reports to track and study an event happening before it begins to adversely affect marine ecosystems.

The C-OCEAN program has been operating since 1997. It is coordinated by Mote Marine Laboratory with the help of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. For information on the program, visit mote.org/ cocean.

Kevin Nealon for decades has created iconic roles and made America laugh, both on- and offscreen, from a long list of movies and TV roles to his infamous nine years on Saturday Night Live. At 64, Nealon is still as funny on CBS’ “Man With A Plan” sitcom and making time for stand up when he comes to the Key West Theater on Sunday, April 29.

Whether as Subliminal Man, part of Hans and Franz, Adam Sandler’s movie sidekick or Doug Wilson from “Weeds,” Nealon pushes the boundaries of sarcasm, saying the things everyone wishes they could say out loud. In person, he is likable, funny, quite sweet – and best, has a soft spot for Key West. He’s even seen the Blue Angels here and plans on spending time hunting for the best breakfast spot.

“My material is absurd, observational and introspective,” said Nealon, describing his upcoming show. “I talk about being an older dad, my heritage and basically, just make random comments.” Nealon’s relationship with his 10-year-old son is a topic he took public with his hilarious book “Yes, You’re Pregnant But What About Me?” when he became a dad at age 53.

Does he miss the old days on Saturday Night Live? “There are certain aspects I do miss, like being topical and creating on the fly, the live aspect, but the schedule was grueling.” Who can’t remember Hans and Franz with accents based on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’m gonna pump you up” days. Was Schwarzenegger offended?

“He loved it. Whenever he sees us, he calls us ‘my cousins.’” It’s hard not to say that without the accent.

Nealon’s most distinct TV role was on the acclaimed and award-winning show “Weeds” as Doug Wilson, the amoral stoner accountant. “No, I am not Doug Wilson, but he was easy to play. He could express himself freely, so self-centered and narcissistic — characteristically, he was the guy you love to hate.” Or hated to love, as Doug Wilson become TV’s most laughable and favorite sleaze.

“I am really proud of everything I’ve done,” said Nealon. “Stand-up happened early in my career, so one of the greatest achievements was being on Johnny Carson.

Nothing like it.” And nothing has been like Nealon’s career that followed.

So does he feel like an icon? “Let’s just say I feel really good about being a part of pop culture. Nowadays, there are so many platforms for comedy, I definitely try to keep a handle on it.” Nealon remarked, “No one should ever be bored.”

recently had the opportunity to meet Dr. Patricia Davis of the Integrated Center for Child Development outside of Boston.

What sets it apart is its focus on neuropsychology. Davis is one of the medical doctors on a staff of about 15 overall.

“We provide a medical home for the patients and also provide psychopharmacological consultations,” Davis said. “The patients might need help with sleep or attention or behavior or depression. They send them to us and we can talk about medications.”

While she was visiting, our conversation naturally progressed to how children with autism learn. In passing, I mentioned that the best way I learn about topics is when they are wrapped up in a story … or fiction. And so Davis sent me these three books. They arrived in my mailbox on Friday and, since I hate delayed gratification, I read the first one that very night.

“The ‘Rosie’ books are just fun reads,” Davis said. “But ‘The Curious Incident’ author had to project and guess at the internal working of the main character’s mind. It felt authentic to me.”

This is a sort of murder mystery told by the main character, Christopher Boone. In the first few pages he discovers a neighbor’s dog impaled with a garden tool. He is, of course, accused and sets out to find the truth. But his efforts are hampered by his interactions with everyone else as he takes everything at face value. The book touches on how the boy is overwhelmed with situations and the challenges his mother and father face in raising him. It’s at times stark, and a very good read.

• “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion Simsion has written a novel that touches on autism, romance and comedy. The main character, Don Tillman, is on the search for the perfect mate, something he calls “The Wife Project.” The genetics professor attempts to use logic in finding a love match (yes, it ends happily). Asperger syndrome isn’t overtly mentioned in the narrative, but the author does mention it in the Q&A at the end of the book.

What sets this story apart is the multi-faceted main character who recognizes his challenges and sets about overcoming them with sometimes wacky methods.

• “The Rosie Effect” by Graeme Simsion This book picks up with characters Rosie and Don Tillman and the challenges of fatherhood. An innocent mistake snowballs into marital discord, deception and doubts. One reviewer wrote, “(Don) is wellmeaning and loyal but awkward, totally logical but sometimes only in his own head, always honest and forthright and so very funny without meaning to be. I like that his Asperger’s/ autism is never clearly defined or labeled but is simply what makes him unique.”

Which is why the Good Health Clinic’s Soup and Salad Daze on April 12 was as “feel good” as it was “feel full.” The local health care clinic partnered with Tavernier art gallery Our Place in Paradise to host the all-you-can-eat event. Visitors browsed from a selection of handmade bowls, plates, and cups created by local potters. After choosing one and making a small donation, guests enjoyed bottomless soup and salad made with love from local chefs, Coral Shores High School’s culinary class, and food enthusiasts.

Some of the tastiest soups were the chicken noodle, coconut curry, tomato bisque, and Italian wedding soup.

here’s never been an Earth Day party like this in the Middle Keys. On Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22, Keys Cable and oTHErside Boardsports are hosting a party that includes beverages, live street art, music, food, fashion, wakeboarding and more. The setting is the huge 50-acre natural tract on Grassy Key at MM 58. It’s an evolving arts community that features the raw outdoors, cable wakeboarding, nature trails, a garden and so much more.

“This is an Earth centric event that promotes civil action and sustainable brands,” said Matt Sexton. “There’s stuff for the kids and stuff for adults.”

For the celebration, Sexton and his partners, Shana and Mike Walsh, have lots of special stuff planned. There will be a pop-up bar and guests are encouraged to bring their own cups for craft beer, sangria and organic juice cocktails. There will be wakeboarding powered by solar energy. There will be a fashion show of clothing and bathing suits made from upcycled fishing

The visiting artists will spread out all over the property for what are essentially live art demonstrations.

On Sunday morning, the day starts with activism. There will be prizes for the best finds during the Mangrove cleanup that runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Guests are encouraged to work in pairs for maximum efficiency.

“This is our first year, and we’re going all in,” said Shana Walsh. “There are going to be so many activities in one spot with this common theme of sustainability, and doing good things for the Earth.”

heeca Lodge was under siege on April 14 when the swashbuckling faculty of Treasure Village Montessori seized the luxury resort for a night of pirate fun during its annual Nautical Nights fundraiser. The evening featured dinner, entertainment, live and silent auctions, as well as Las Vegas-style casino gaming like roulette, craps, and blackjack. More than 120 attended. You can’t spell rum without the “Arrr,” so of course there were rum tastings, too.
