uch progress has been made when it comes to Hurricane Irma debris removal on land in the Florida Keys, but there are swaths of debris elsewhere, invisible to those of us without a dive tank.

In the eight months since the hurricane, debris like broken glass, traps, nets and lines has started to settle after the rough-and-tumble wrath of the storm.

She’s on the Marine Sanctuary’s Marine Debris Working Group, and presented to the Advisory Council at its meeting on April 17 at the Hyatt Place in Marathon. Lisa Mongelia, who is also in the working group, was also on hand. Shortly after Irma, the group created Goal: Clean Seas Florida Keys.

“We’re going to have to send the divers out,” Rodriguez said.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is seeking applications from Blue Star certified dive operators to find and remove marine debris from target areas within the Florida Keys

Approximately $80,000 total will be awarded for the removal efforts on a rolling basis; award amounts will range from $1,000 to $10,000.

All proposed projects are required to meet or exceed a 50 percent match.

For example, if $4,000 is requested from the foundation, a $2,000 match is expected to be contributed to the project, like staff and volunteer time, work performed, materials and services donated or cash.

In other news, Rhonda Haag, sustainability director for Monroe County, gave an update about canal cleanup post-Irma. About 100 canals throughout unincorporated Monroe were heavily affected by the storm, and 3,081 cubic yards of debris have been pulled out of Big Pine Key canals since the $6 million cleanup project started in February.

Total cost for canal cleanup will most likely be around $52 million, which is why the county is seeking funds from other sources.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has agreed to fund cleanup in unincorporated Monroe, Marathon and Islamorada at a total of $10 million, although cleanup has not started in the Middle and Upper Keys yet.

It’s on a reimbursement system, so Monroe County, Marathon and Islamorada will reimburse DEP, then seek reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Haag said.

here’s never been an Earth Day party like this in the Middle Keys. On Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22, Keys Cable and oTHErside Boardsports are hosting a party that includes beverages, live street art, music, food, fashion, wakeboarding and more. The setting is the huge 50-acre natural tract on Grassy Key at MM 58. It’s an evolving arts community that features the raw outdoors, cable wakeboarding, nature trails, a garden and so much more.

“This is an Earth centric event that promotes civil action and sustainable brands,” said Matt Sexton. “There’s stuff for the kids and stuff for adults.”

For the celebration, Sexton and his partners, Shana and Mike Walsh, have lots of special stuff planned. There will be a pop-up bar and guests are encouraged to bring their own cups for craft beer, sangria and organic juice cocktails. There will be wakeboarding powered by solar energy. There will be a fashion show of clothing and bathing suits made from upcycled fishing

“We’ve invited nine artists to create using the theme ‘human effects on the environment,’” said Sexton. The site is already art-rich — check out the gigantic sculptures that are part of the Overseas Sculpture Trail and the mural of the skeletonized pink flamingo on the back side of the main building. The visiting artists will spread out all over the property for what are essentially live art demonstrations.

On Sunday morning, the day starts with activism. There will be prizes for the best finds during the Mangrove cleanup that runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Guests are encouraged to work in pairs for maximum efficiency.

“This is our first year, and we’re going all in,” said Shana Walsh. “There are going to be so many activities in one spot with this common theme of sustainability, and doing good things for the Earth.”

PETS, CHILL OUT CBD oil can relax your animal KATIE ATKINS

t won’t make your dog giggle and eat everything in the house – it’s not a Cheech and Chong kind of cannabinoid we’re talking about.

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, may help treat joint and muscle pain, anxiety, seizures, cancer side effects and behavior issues in both pets and their owners. There are CBDinfused treats, tablets and tinctures.

Florida is one of 46 states where CBD is legal, and it’s been popping up in health food stores and pet stores, touted as a natural and effective method for, as an example, relaxing a dog who has separation anxiety.

So how does it work?

CBD is derived from the cannabis plant as a compound, but does not cause feelings of euphoria caused by the most active ingredient in cannabis, THC. The two affect different receptors in the brain, said Keys Animal Hospital owner Dr. Mike Dunn.

Humans and animals have an endocannabinoid system which receives and translates signals from cannabinoids. In turn, the properties of CBD can help regulate sleep, immunesystem responses and pain.

It is not psychoactive and does not change the state of mind of the pet or person using it.

Food For Thought, a health store in the Gulfside Village Plaza in Marathon, sells CBD oil in various strengths for both pets and humans.

“It’s something that I’m recommending more and more. We’ve been using it as partial treatment for cats and dogs, and it’s been really good for aggression problems in male cats in particular,” Dunn said.

Partial treatment means CBD oil combined with medicine.

“I might prescribe amitriptyline for cats that are peeing where they’re not supposed to or fighting with their siblings, then add some CBD oil with that,” he said, adding that a benefit of CBD oil is that it does not sedate the animal or hurt its kidneys or liver in the long run.

Dunn said he does not have a favorite brand, but he’s been sending pet owners to Food For Thought in Marathon, where CBD oil is sold in different strengths for both pets and humans under the True brand name.

True CBD oil comes in dosages of 250 milligrams all the way up to 2,200 milligrams.

“My baseline is 250 milligrams per 1 ML,” Dunn said.

In simpler terms, cats can receive three or four drops a day of CBD oil, or 10 to 15 drops a day for a larger dog with anxiety.

CBD can help relieve: • Separation anxiety • Cancer side effects • Chemotherapy • Joint pain • Arthritis • Behavior issues • Attitude problems

“There are different strengths and we’re kind of playing around with that, starting with a low dosage and upping it over time,” he said.

“Catnip will make your cat higher than CBD will,” said Food For Thought employee Cassandra Dickson.

The health food store is in the Gulfside Village Plaza, MM 50 bayside.

When Hurricane Irma was approaching the Florida Keys in September, Keys Kritters pet store owner Robby Majeska opened the threebedroom, three-bathroom apartment above the Key Largo store to neighbors and friends.

Sixteen people brought seven dogs.

“There were pit bulls and a German shepherd, and let me tell you, it was loud,” Majeska said. “I gave them some Canni Bits (CBD-infused dog treats), and for two days, those dogs were nice and calm.”

Canni Bits are what Majeska calls entry-level and low-dose, around 30 milligrams. The treats take effect within an hour, lasting from eight to 10 hours.

Sellers of 12690 Overseas Hwy #210, Marathon FL According to a January 7, 1908 Florida East Coast Railway timetable, three railroad stations serviced what would become known as the Marathon area: Vaca, Knights Key, and Knights Key Dock. By October 1908, the Marathon name appeared. Why the name Marathon? If anyone could give the reason it would be the late, great historian Dan Gallagher, who revealed the answer in his book “Florida’s Great Ocean Railway.” According to Gallagher, the F.E.C. Railway’s President Joseph R. Parrott gave credit for the name to American poet Witter Bynner. Parrott invited Bynner down to the Keys to “plot stations for the railroad.” Bynner chose the name Marathon for the station at Key Vaca. The Art Studio and The Coffee Loft The art studio opened in 2013 as a create-your-own art studio, coffee shop, and retail store. The studio promotes an atmosphere of creativity in multiple art mediums, from pottery to glass work. M

onroe County Commissioner George Neugent will be on the ballot this November, but only Marathon voters will see his name.

“I feel like I have Mark Senmartin a lot to offer the city that means so much to me and all my friends,” said Neugent. “I feel like I can contribute by maintaining the contacts I have made over my 20 years as a county commissioner.”

He is confident his 20 years of local, state and federal contacts will help Marathon “go to the next level. One thing I want to see come to fruition is the restoration of the 7 Mile Bridge.”

He said he also understands a council member’s role within city hall and has a deep respect for Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey and the rest of city staff. “I know who they work for – which is the city manger,” he said.

Marathon has two council seats up for grabs this November. Incumbent Mark Senmartin has said he will run for a third term; Marathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron is seeking the District 2 county commission seat currently held by Neugent. She is running with his support.

SCHOOLS ELECTION • Meanwhile, Monroe County School District’s John Dick is running for a fourth term serving District 4. He is being challenged by James Doran, a newJohn Dick comer to politics with a long career in education.

Dick said he is running again because there is more work to do.

“We have three new schools to finish, one in each area of the Keys, and the fields to work on,” he said.

Senmartin was first elected in 2013 for a two-year term and during that period the council amended the city charter. In 2015, Senmartin was elected to a threeyear term. If elected, he would serve Mark Senmartin another three years.

He said he still has work to do.

“I feel like Marathon residents need to be represented on a personal level,” Senmartin said. “Clearly we still have hurricane recovery to do and that’s going to take a while — not just the recovery in general, but also the rebuilding of people’s homes and lives and businesses. The city needs to give them the tools that they need to succeed.”

Senmartin said he would continue to advocate for policies and fees that keep the city’s costs and services revenue-neutral. He said the city has excelled at hurricane response before, during and after the storm and also at affordable housing.

“The city has been a leader by giving the developers the tools that they need, so they can build more affordable housing,” he said.

The top two vote getters will be elected to the Marathon City Council.

As of now, only Neugent and Senmartin have filed to run, but candidates have until June to file.

Across the state, school officials are reacting to the legislation that grew out of the tragic shooting in Parkland.

He said the school district must work with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Key West Police Department to get school resource officers in place, as mandated by Tallahassee.

“And we have to look at hardening the security situations, especially at older schools. They aren’t unsafe, they just weren’t built to that standard,” he said. The third part, addressing mental health needs, could possibly be the most difficult — finding and hiring and moving professionals here, he said.

aybe you have seen her slinging trash cans into the back of the Marathon Garbage Services (MGS) trucks. Tresa Jutz isn’t afraid to get a little dirty. Waking up long before the roosters start crowing, and leaving the shop at 5 a.m., Jutz is the first woman garbage-man at MGS. “I was raised with all boys,” she said, wearing her purple gloves and hooking up a dumpster to the back of the truck. “This is nothing.”

Moving to Marathon in July – her brothers and uncles work for a garbage company in Kentucky –she saw MGS was hiring. She moved up the ranks quickly, including getting her commercial driving license to start driving the garbage trucks.

“Tresa is a highly valued employee.

I wish I had more employees with her work ethic and desire to advance within the company,” said MGS owner Greg Konrath. “She’s motivated and it shows when she’s on the job.”

Before moving to the Keys, Jutz, whose children are grown, worked at a Toyota factory in Kentucky. With friends in the Keys, she made the move south.

“If I am going to be in the Keys, I want to be outside enjoying it,” she said, cracking a joke about being in the fresh air.

When asked about challenges, Tresa couldn’t think of any, “I couldn’t ask to work with better owners and co-workers.”

The real challenge starts when she gets off work, usually between noon and 1 p.m. She is still knee-deep in Hurricane Irma cleanup at her trailer.

“I’m still ripping it apart,” she said, sleeping at a friend’s house since the storm. “I am usually at the trailer until dark and then get up and do it again the next day.”

ith Marathon and the Middle Keys community tasked with raising $15 million for the construction of the new Fishermen’s Hospital, a new organization was founded last week to give the under-50 crowd a voice and means to support the hospital.

“Our turnout was much better than we expected,” said Sarah Cizmas, chair of the Fishermen’s Community Hospital Young Philanthropists of BapThe Founding Members tist Health (FCHYPBH). “This Jason & Ann Long just shows how committed our Jo & David Grego generation is to the future of Mallory Morton & Michael Pinto our community.”

n April 14, Leadership Monroe County graduated Class XXVI. Although Hurricane Irma threatened to disrupt the Keys galaxy, the “Stormtroopers” came together to become true ambassadors of the Florida Keys — learning all about what makes the islands unique, with an eye on assuming leadership roles to continuously improve where we live, work and raise our families. The 22 graduates hail from Key West, Marathon and the Upper Keys.

Jennifer D’Alessandro 1974-2018 Jennifer Lyn D’Alessandro passed away April 8, 2018 unexpectedly after a short illness. Jennifer was born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Aug. 21, 1974.

Jennifer graduated from Montville High in Montville, Conn. in 1992. She was a 1994 graduate of Florida Keys Community College in Key West.

Jennifer was the office manager at Island Physical Therapy in Marathon.

Known for her compassion and generosity, Jennifer was best remembered for her smile. She was a recent recipient of a Habitat for Humanity home in Marathon.

Jennifer is survived by her son, Logan D’Alessandro, mother Jane Dowdell, stepfather Gary Dowdell, and all of Marathon. She is survived by five aunts (and uncles), numerous cousins, and all of New York. She was predeceased by one uncle. Jennifer was a bright star and will be sadly missed by all she touched in her uplifting, special way. Funeral arrangements were made

by Dean Lopez Funeral Home. Jennifer’s celebration of life was April 16, 2018. The family would like to thank the New Life Church in Marathon and Pastor Keith for a beautiful service. Kayak trip helps fight cancer To the Editor: The annual Castaways Against Cancer kayak trip is taking off from Virginia Key in Miami on June 9 and arriving in Key West on June 15. This is the 19th year that the Castaways have paddled in the fight to end cancer. The 162-mile long trip, done in 7 days, shows the passion and dedication from these kayakers. Their goal is to break the million-dollar mark, in their fundraising for the last 19 years, for the American Cancer Society. This relay for life team of the Florida Keys will, once this trip is done, have paddled 3,000 miles, the equivalent of kayaking from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This is my fourth year kayaking with this group and I will happily be a seven-year breast cancer survivor on our first day of the trip. got to have a stick in my hand long before some of the other kids,” said Key West High School senior lacrosse player Dean Wallen. He started playing on the youth league when it was created in 2012.

On Monday, the high school boys lacrosse team won 19-0 in the district semifinals, and move on to play at Coral Shores on Thursday, April 19 for the district championship. “I was 12 years old when I started and it helped me get a head start on my skills than students who join in high school.”

Wallen’s freshman year was the inaugural season for the boys and girls lacrosse teams at Key West High School. He said the success of the team this year is due in part to the lessons many of the students learned in the youth league.

Although the high school season is winding down, the youth teams are still on the field through May 5. With seven boys and six girls teams this year, Trish Gibson was looking to get her daughter Taylor, 10, involved in a team sport. “Taylor is very active and this really helps her get some of her energy out,” said Gibson. “She’s loved every minute of it. There is so much camaraderie on the field.”

Gibson also noted a plus: the cooler weather of the spring sport.

It’s not just the Key West kids in on the deal either. Coach and Vice President of the Key West League David Migut, City of Marathon’s attorney, brings his daughter, Chloe, and a couple of her friends down for the practices and games. “It’s like eight hours in the car a week traveling to Key West, but she loves it,” he said.

Chloe started playing in St. Augustine when she was in preschool. Now in fifth grade, playing lacrosse was part of her conditions when her family moved to the Keys three years ago.

“I love lacrosse because your team essentially becomes your family,” said Chloe. “It is truly about becoming a strong, persistent, powerful girl who plays her best, plus it’s a really fun sport.”

Migut hopes to start a Marathon youth lacrosse league next season. He said he’s garnered some feedback, but would like to round up more interested participants, volunteer coaches and referees. If interested, email him at davidmigut@gmail.com.

is signature sign off from Saturday Night Live’s weekend update – “I’m Kevin Nealon, and that’s news to me” – is in the comedic history books, especially since he outlasted most other cast members. Kevin Nealon for decades has created iconic roles and made America laugh, both on- and offscreen, from a long list of movies and TV roles to his infamous nine years on Saturday Night Live. At 64, Nealon is still as funny on CBS’ “Man With A Plan” sitcom and making time for stand up when he comes to the Key West Theater on Sunday, April 29.

Whether as Subliminal Man, part of Hans and Franz, Adam Sandler’s movie sidekick or Doug Wilson from “Weeds,” Nealon pushes the boundaries of sarcasm, saying the things everyone wishes they could say out loud. In person, he is likable, funny, quite sweet – and best, has a soft spot for Key West. He’s even seen the Blue Angels here and plans on spending time hunting for the best breakfast spot.

“My material is absurd, observational and introspective,” said Nealon, describing his upcoming show. “I talk about being an older dad, my heritage and basically, just make random comments.” Nealon’s relationship with his 10-year-old son is a topic he took public with his hilarious book “Yes, You’re Pregnant But What About Me?” when he became a dad at age 53.

Does he miss the old days on Saturday Night Live? “There are certain aspects I do miss, like being topical and creating on the fly, the live aspect, but the schedule was grueling.” Who can’t remember Hans and Franz with accents based on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’m gonna pump you up” days. Was Schwarzenegger offended?

“He loved it. Whenever he sees us, he calls us ‘my cousins.’” It’s hard not to say that without the accent.

Nealon’s most distinct TV role was on the acclaimed and award-winning show “Weeds” as Doug Wilson, the amoral stoner accountant. “No, I am not Doug Wilson, but he was easy to play. He could express himself freely, so self-centered and narcissistic — characteristically, he was the guy you love to hate.” Or hated to love, as Doug Wilson become TV’s most laughable and favorite sleaze.

“I am really proud of everything I’ve done,” said Nealon. “Stand-up happened early in my career, so one of the greatest achievements was being on Johnny Carson.

Nothing like it.” And nothing has been like Nealon’s career that followed.

So does he feel like an icon? “Let’s just say I feel really good about being a part of pop culture. Nowadays, there are so many platforms for comedy, I definitely try to keep a handle on it.” Nealon remarked, “No one should ever be bored.”

or your listening pleasure, here is another installment of Songs I’d Like Never To Hear Again.

These columns are always good for a laugh and some inspired responses from readers who either agree, or consider me horrible for dissing their favorite songs.

It’s really funny how subjective this topic is, and how one person’s ear trash is another’s ear treasure. And we all know what they say about opinions.

But most of us agree that music is a truly important part of this life. Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” Sadly, there are some definite and totally awful musical mistakes that make life less bearable. Here are some mistakes from my personal list, and as always: WARNING — this column may induce your brain to remember potentially unpleasant music! And remember, these are only my opinions — your mileage may vary!

“Take It On The Run” – REO Speedwagon. They are tied with Styx as the most white band in classic rock, “Ridin’ the Storm Out” notwithstanding. Kevin Cronin’s opening whine — “Heard it from a friend who…heard it from a friend who… heard it from another you’d been messin’ around” — sets the tone for four minutes of I-just-don’t-give-a-damn. If all you did was whine at her like that, it’s no wonder she’s stepping out on you. When it comes on the radio, my hand is on the dial before the first “friend” comes out of the speaker. Speaking of Styx…

“Babe” – Styx. There are good love songs, and there are great love songs. This isn’t either. Styx is a band that combines a few (but not many) tasty rock elements with just a bit too much of a Broadway show tune ethos.

Their concept albums were banal and shallow (Mr. Roboto), and ex-Styx member Dennis DeYoung was responsible for this, as some his former bandmates recalled none too fondly.

Still, it was their only Number One, and I’m sure all Styx’s members didn’t mind the cash even if they reviled the song.

“Hot Blooded” – Foreigner. If you really have a fever of 103°, you’re likely contagious and should be home in bed, not out trying to bed groupies after the show. Given the lyrics of the song, a fever isn’t likely the only disease you’d spread. And enticing her to dump her boyfriend or husband for a night of passion with your contagious self doesn’t exactly endear you to anyone these days. The testosterone in this song is simply off the charts. I

get that it’s classic rock’s version of a number of equally meaningless pop and hip hop paeans to one-night hookups. Whatever.

“The Joker” – Steve Miller Band.

JOHN I really can’t believe BARTUS I didn’t write about this one before is a City Council member and Vice now. Just ponder these obtuse yet Mayor of the City of Marathon. John pretentious yet just is also a musician silly lyrics: “Some who performs people call me the around town at various establish- space cowboy/ Some call me the ments. gangster of love/ Some people call me Maurice/’Cause I speak of the pompitous of love.” No matter who or what the “pompitous of love” is, the only thing this song is good for is singing along while intoxicated under the realization that you’re going home alone tonight. If it’s a joke, isn’t it supposed to be funny? This is just drunkenly sad.

“Needles and Pins” – The Searchers. This song is simply annoying because of its cloying melody and its affected chorus vocalizations (“But still they’d begin… uh! needles and pins… uh!”) The group should have searched for a better song.

“Who Let The Dogs Out?” – Baha Men. Who cares? Sadly, this canine abomination won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Who let their brains out?

“Hot Child in the City” – Nick Gilder. His voice sounds so high and immature, one wonders if he was the child. A 1970s one-hit wonder (thank God!) that was just as bad as…

“Fox on the Run” – Sweet. It was hard to choose between this one and their other big hit, “Little Willy.” They both were equally annoying.

BY READING Doctor illuminates issue through books

I

recently had the opportunity to meet Dr. Patricia Davis of the Integrated Center for Child Development outside of Boston.

What sets it apart is its focus on neuropsychology. Davis is one of the medical doctors on a staff of about 15 overall.

“We provide a medical home for the patients and also provide psychopharmacological consultations,” Davis said. “The patients might need help with sleep or attention or behavior or depression. They send them to us and we can talk about medications.”

While she was visiting, our conversation naturally progressed to how children with autism learn. In passing, I mentioned that the best way I learn about topics is when they are wrapped up in a story … or fiction. And so Davis sent me these three books. They arrived in my mailbox on Friday and, since I hate delayed gratification, I read the first one that very night.

“The ‘Rosie’ books are just fun reads,” Davis said. “But ‘The Curious Incident’ author had to project and guess at the internal working of the main character’s mind. It felt authentic to me.”

• “The curious incident of the dog in the night-time,” by Mark Haddon.

This is a sort of murder mystery told by the main character, Christopher Boone. In the first few pages he discovers a neighbor’s dog impaled with a garden tool. He is, of course, accused and sets out to find the truth. But his efforts are hampered by his interactions with everyone else as he takes everything at face value. The book touches on how the boy is overwhelmed with situations and the challenges his mother and father face in raising him. It’s at times stark, and a very good read.

• “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion Simsion has written a novel that touches on autism, romance and comedy. The main character, Don Tillman, is on the search for the perfect mate, something he calls “The Wife Project.” The genetics professor attempts to use logic in finding a love match (yes, it ends happily). Asperger syndrome isn’t overtly mentioned in the narrative, but the author does mention it in the Q&A at the end of the book.

What sets this story apart is the multi-faceted main character who recognizes his challenges and sets about overcoming them with sometimes wacky methods.

• “The Rosie Effect” by Graeme Simsion This book picks up with characters Rosie and Don Tillman and the challenges of fatherhood. An innocent mistake snowballs into marital discord, deception and doubts. One reviewer wrote, “(Don) is wellmeaning and loyal but awkward, totally logical but sometimes only in his own head, always honest and forthright and so very funny without meaning to be. I like that his Asperger’s/ autism is never clearly defined or labeled but is simply what makes him unique.”

TAKING REFUGE Volunteering shows nature’s classroom

It started on a kayak tour that I didn’t really want to take.

My wife suggested we do the Full Moon Kayak Tour on New Year’s Eve. I’m not crazy about kayaking, but Nancy Chatelaine, the trailing volunteer, distracted me by keeping me talking during the portion of the trip when the water was deeper than I am tall.

She told me how she’d gotten involved with the Florida Keys Wildlife Society, which supports the Keys wildlife refuges, and she mentioned that a meeting was coming up for those who might want to volunteer for the winter of 2018.

The meeting was packed, with lots of returning volunteers greeting one another. Several people gave brief presentations and then it was time to sign up for a shift. Turns out there was an opening for someone to greet visitors and answer questions at the Blue Hole on Thursday afternoons. I shadowed the very knowledgeable Bill DeHart

first — he nonchalantly pointed out a bald eagle flying over as we chatted — and then started my own Thursdays there.

People don’t generally get to the Blue Hole by accident. You go there on purpose. It’s a few miles off U.S.1, a former quarry, now a pond, on Big Pine Key. It’s home to a couple of alligators and plenty of other wildlife, with a viewing platform overlooking the water.

Once a week, I take one of the prettiest drives there is, starting on the Marathon side of the 7 Mile Bridge and on toward Big Pine. The water has never been the same color twice on those drives, but it has been breathtaking every time.

I bring a chair and water bottle and wait to see who shows up and what they have to talk about.

And I’ve had a ball.

I’ve used my rusty college French with a few groups, and heard German, Spanish, British and Australian accents. I’ve pointed out alligators, green herons, anhingas and turtles. I’ve met Mickey Foster, who seems never to be without his camera; he took the iconic photo of a heron silhouetted on a piling, an image that’s used as an illustration for Outdoor Fest.

I watched, increasingly alarmed, as an alligator crawled out of the water, under the floorboards and out onto land at the corner of the viewing platform, staring at a family having lunch maybe 20 feet away. The family took its lunch to the parking lot and I gained a new appreciation for how fast an alligator can move when this one went back into the water.

I learned all the time. One day, a guide for Up The Keys Tours pointed out what I had completely missed — a Cuban tree frog secreted in the eaves of the viewing platform. The next week, visitors pointed out a black racer snake in the brush near the platform, making a different frog’s day a very bad one. Last week, with help from Foster, I saw a green heron sitting on a nest.

I’m always exhilarated by the time I leave.

One day on my way home, I stopped at the little pullover just before Bahia Honda to catch the setting sun at the old railroad bridge. I wandered back and forth for the better part of an hour, watching the light change.

Like many snowbirds, I’m getting ready to migrate for the summer. I’ll be very happy to see family and friends in Illinois.

But when the leaves drop in a few months, I hope they’ll save me a shift at the Blue Hole.

REHABILITATION RELOCATION New vet joins Marathon Turtle Hospital

H

e’s performed surgery on turtles for years and is the co-author of a new book about turtle rehabilitation, and now he’s the Marathon Turtle Hospital’s new surgeon.

Terry Norton DVM has replaced Dr. Doug Mader, who recently retired from the hospital, as its new surgeon. Norton, a Utah native, is the founder and director of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. He recently helped write “Sea Turtle Health and Rehabilitation” and has been coming to the Florida Keys for the turtle hospital’s annual workshop for 17 years.

“They were looking for some help and I said I was interested and it just worked out that I could come down,” he said.

On April 12, he was busy removing tumors from the back of a green turtle, one of four surgeries done that day.

Norton has been practicing veterinarian medicine for more than 30 years and in January received the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians’ Emil Dolensek Award for his work at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

n Saturday morning, at 8:01 a.m., Aydan Child, 17, was the first finisher of the 37th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. He is the first local to win it, the first teenager to win it, and his family history is inextricably intertwined with the race, too.

“My aunt Denis Pankow directed the race for 23 years,” said Aydan. Because of his family’s continued involvement with the race, nearly the entire clan was there to meet him at the finish line.

“I’ve worked the finish line since 1983,” said Denise, adding that Aydan’s mom, Amy Sollie, was standing at her side when Aydan crossed the line first with a time of 40:01. “We are so proud.” His uncle Chris Pankow and father Dana Child were in the pace car just ahead of Aydan and his sister Hannah, 19, finished the race 14th in her age group.

Aydan is no stranger to running. In 2016, he was one of the leaders of Marathon High School track team that placed second in the state. That year he had a personal best of 17:24 in the cross country 5k. In 2017, the team made it to state competition again (they placed sixth) and he PR’d with a time of 16:54. At last year’s 7 Mile Bridge Run he was fifth overall with a time of 42:54.

“We are so proud of him,” said MHS Athletic Director Teresa Konrath.

“It was a great moment,” said race director Ginger Sayer.

How did you feel at the start of the race? I felt confident. I had done a bunch of training and I’m in great shape. I knew I only had to beat a couple of guys like last year’s winner Josh Peterson of Boca Raton.

What were you thinking about during the run? I thought about keeping my pace and continuing to keep the lead. I was excited. In fact, when I hit the 10k mark I was just grinning from ear to ear.

How many years have you run the race? Since I was 9 years old, so this is my eighth race.

What shoes did you race in? My Nike Zoom Pegasus 33s.

What’s the significance of the shirt? The mother of one of my track teammates just passed away. Purple was her favorite color.

Race day nutrition? I had a Clif bar and a banana.

The day before, I drank about a gallon and a half of water.

e’s reportedly the first teen and the first Marathon resident to win the Seven Mile Bridge Run. Aydan Child, 17, a junior at Marathon High School and cross-country and track runner, finished Saturday’s race, the 37th annual, with a time of 40:01.

“It was a really good run. It was just really hot,” he said.

Child has been running the race since he was 9 years old.
