owadays it seems like we are running here and running there, running to and from, or just plain running around. Phew, even Forrest can’t keep up. And just to make it more interesting, Keys residents run as a hobby, a sport and a weekend pastime; from marathons to Ironman, we don’t stop running. And this is the time of year to commemorate our running with the famed 7 Mile Bridge run and the Cow Key Channel run, the “shorter “ alternative — zero k, to be exact. So we asked locals….

What kind of runner are you, 7 Mile Bridge or Cow Key Bridge?

“7 Mile. This will be my fourth or fifth time,” said Jennifer Walker. “And I always beat the bus.”

“Cow Key. And we’ve got plans this year,” said Dee Dee Vaughan. “We will be cows representing strawberry and chocolate milk and my dog will be skim.”

“Both,” said Bob Kinsey with the U.S. Coast Guard. “No kidding around with these things, gotta do it all.”

“Oh, I am a Cow Key girl,” said Jamie Guzman. “I definitely would never make it seven miles.”

“Cow Key. But I don’t really run it,” said Ashley Ravelo. “I watch it from the bar.”

aiting for money from the state and federal government for costs incurred during Hurricane Irma is “like playing cards with a 5-year-old.”

Those were the words of Cynthia Hall, assistant county attorney, during a heated Monday meeting with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state Division of Emergency Management at the Marathon Government Center.

“We don’t know what the rules are and they seem to be changing all the time. It’s tough to know what information to give you to fix the problem,” Hall told Wesley Maul, director for the state Division of Emergency Management.

Hall and other officials were stressing the need for reimbursement as

they struggle with the possibility of a busy upcoming hurricane season, starting June 1.

Cities and towns countywide have depleted reserves, are taking out lines of credit and face the possibility of tax hikes as they await a combined $150 million in reimbursements.

The process goes like this: What’s called a “project worksheet” is submitted to FEMA, which then labels it “obligated,” or approved. Then the reimbursement money is sent to the state to be disbursed, but that has not happened.

Maul said the process can take years.

“There are widespread failures and we’re trying to figure out how to reduce the threat to our communities from federal de-obligation,” he said.

De-obligation is when money is given to a municipality and then owed back to FEMA if spent incorrectly.

“What I see is that the system is failing us,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

Maul said the state department is doing everything it can to “shake the cobwebs off” and streamline the process to get Monroe County municipalities the money they so badly need.

Statewide, Maul said, the department expects about 10,000 Irma project worksheets to be submitted.

Five hundred have already been submitted in Monroe County, he said.

Ten of those local projects have made it to the review phase.

The other 490 projects are still either under project development at a local phase or have been submitted to FEMA. Zero have been reimbursed.

“So now, as we move into the next hurricane season with depleted reserves, we’re at tremendous risk,” Lindsey said. “We need the reimbursement to come now.”

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) held its annual Partners in Paradise luncheon on April 6 awarding three recipients who went above and beyond this year as individuals, businesses and all-around service to the Keys in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Academy Award winning producer and wife Jon and Julie Landau were honored for creating the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund, the Florida Panthers donated more than $250,000 to Keys recovery and the Lower Keys Medical Center provided assistance and donations during the trying time. The foundation was proud to have helped facilitate and distribute more than $1 million to 74 nonprofit partners for hurricane relief with the help of these individuals and organizations.

READING THE SIGNS Identifying early indicators can help with autism

hroughout the country and the Florida Keys, April is celebrated as Autism Awareness Month. Local groups like the Autism Society of the Keys are encouraging parents to stay vigilant for early indicators.

By understanding developmental benchmarks at different ages, parents can monitor how their child is progressing. For children with autism, early detection can make a huge difference on how the early part of their lives plays out.

“I’m a huge believer in early intervention. I don’t think my son would be the kid he is today if we hadn’t started when we started,” said Anita Gibbs, mother of 4-year-old Achilles.

How kids play, learn, speak, move and act reveal important clues about their development. Though children progress at their own pace, by specific ages certain developmental milestones should be met.

If children aren’t meeting those milestones, it might be time to talk to a pediatrician.

“Usually the pediatrician is the first one who has an inkling,” said Amanda Alfonso, who owns Amy’s Angels. “They can refer him to a neurologist to see why they aren’t performing certain tasks, like grasping things, for example,” said Alfonso. Amy’s Angels Healthcare Inc. and similar agencies help habilitate developmentally disabled children.

Children can demonstrate behavioral cues that hint at autism as early as six months. However, a diagnosis is not typically made until 18 months. That’s because symptoms of autism can appear and fade away within the first two years of a child’s life. Children demonstrating developmental delay can catch up to their peers within those first two years.

On the other hand, children meeting their milestones can begin to regress in their development within that time. It’s also important to consider that some high functioning children with autism aren’t diagnosed until they begin attending school and social issues arise.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents routinely screen their infants for autism as part of 18-month and 24-month wellbaby examinations. Often, children younger than 2 are more likely diagnosed with developmental delay until further tests are done to determine if whether they definitively have autism.

“We first found out that there was something not quite right at 18 months. We had taken him to a pediatrician, who told us we had to take him to the neurologist,” said Gibbs.

“Within 20 minutes they determined he had autism. At that time he didn’t do anything, he didn’t talk, he didn’t babble, he didn’t look you in the eye, or play with other kids.”

Once a child has been diagnosed with autism, a nationally board certified behavioral analyst is able to work with parents and the child to develop therapy geared to improving specific skills. The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapists apply different techniques to make changes in behavior.

“The therapy really helps them to adapt day-to-day to socialize and behave,” said Alfonso. “They can integrate with others in school, and caregivers see that they are calmer and concentrate better. It has to be a consistent routine. They need to have a set routine, a time to play, a time to do homework. There has to be a level of discipline.”

Part of the therapy is improving a child’s level of social, emotional, communication, language, cognitive, and physical ability. Therapists and analysts have the ultimate goal of developing life skills the children will need to lead more productive and independent lives. Therapists encourage parents to participate as much as possible by reinforcing the exercises they’ve begun.

Achilles started his behavioral therapy at 21 months, working four hours a day five days a week until he was almost 3-1/2 years old. Achilles learned how to communicate with pictures first, then words, then sentences. He often tells his mother he loves her, and that she’s his best friend. Now 4-1/2, Achilles still does

his therapy five days a week, but now he’s down to two hours. With kindergarten approaching soon, his occupational therapist is working on issues with his motor skills to prepare him to start writing.

“Now he’s a completely different kid (since starting therapy); he talks, he has his own personality, he learns like everybody else,” said Gibbs. “If parents aren’t doing the same thing as the therapist, it’s not going to be as successful, though.”

Alfonso said that for many parents a diagnosis of autism can be difficult to accept. Parents worry about the quality of life their children are going to have. But for parents like Gibbs, autism comes with a silver lining.

“If it wasn’t for autism I don’t think he would be the same way.

He’s caring and sweet and concerned about others,” she said. “He’s taught me a lot more than I could ever teach him, to slow down and be patient.”

rior to 1849, the American sponge market was largely satisfied by products harvested from the Mediterranean Sea. However, sponges culled from local waters were taken to New York to test the market in 1849 and deemed equal in quality. Thus began the Florida Keys sponge boom. Sponges were graded in terms of size and quality before being auctioned off on the docks at Key West every day at 3 p.m. By 1890, as many as 300 sponge ships were operating out of Key West, with 2,000 men employed in the field. Size made

a difference. Medium-sized sponges were more desirable than those too big or too small. Before the turn of the century, the Monroe County sponge industry was generating as much as $1 million annually – well more than $25 million in today’s dollars. While the industry proved incapable of sustaining itself on a global market, pockets of local fishermen are harvesting natural sea sponges from the waters surrounding the Florida Keys to this day.

Financial Jeopardy KIDS WIN BIG IN FINANCIAL CHALLENGE 1

I

t was a photo finish at the “Financial Fitness Challenge” on April 9. Six high school students, in two teams, answered dozens of questions testing their financial literacy: What is laissezfaire economics? What does net income mean? Is interest on a savings account taxable? The kids studied material provided by National Endowment for Financial Education and VISA’s Practical Money Skills; at stake was $15,000 for the winning team, $5,000 for each student. And it was a nailbiter as both teams only made one mistake in 90 minutes of questions.

“I have never seen anything like this,” said Juli Lewis, of Southeastern Credit Union Foundation.

“There was a team from Alabama in this twice and never got as many right as you kids.” The credit union created the challenge for students of Alabama and Florida three years ago; this is the first year Key West students have participated, thanks to the Chamber of Commerce and The Keys Federal Credit Union. Twenty-two chamber members offered to supply the $250 sponsorships for each team, although there were only 11 teams in the end. And The Keys Federal Credit Union generously donated the $15,000 prize money.

Team One consisted of John Mott, Christian Brannon and Alan Demier. What motivated them to take the challenge? “On a personal level, I want to be an entrepreneur,” said Brannon, while Demier talked about being a venture capitalist. And if he won the money? Brannon didn’t miss a

beat, “I would start a business.”

Their challengers on Team Two — Taylor Olive, Rachel Wilcox and Iain Wilcox — seemed confident aside from the nervous toe tapping under the table. They were obviously prepared. If they won, Olive said, “I would put it in a low risk Treasury bond or CD.” The game initially consisted of three rounds of five questions, best two out of three with a sudden death round if tied. Right from the start, correct answer after correct answer, it was going to be a showdown. Team Two lost round one in sudden death by one answer. Round two resulted in sudden death with a total of 30 rounds of questions and the computer eventually gave up and stalled, resulting in a tie. Round three, sudden death again and eventually the computer began repeating the questions they had already answered, but Team One lost by one question.

“This cannot get any more suspenseful,” said Lewis, impressed by Key West’s ability.

Each team headed to an online version of the game, resulting in a final score equally close, but with a clear winner. So who knew what HELOC stands for, or can calculate credit-worthiness best? Team Two came out ahead by just a few points, but a heartfelt congratulations to both teams, who came out ahead when it comes to a good financial education.

Team Two will head to another online competition against other Florida teams to go to the final championship in Orlando with an all-expense paid trip and more prize money.

here are certain events that are normal in the Keys, like running seven miles across a bridge on a hot April morning. Obviously, it seemed like a good idea at the time and then it kind of stuck — just like the lionfish population. For runners, this can be a really big deal, and for others, heh, they’ll find out what happened later, after sleeping in and brunch. Regardless, each year residents face the conundrum: to run or not to run?

allory Square was such a hit last year that Taste of Key West will be back at the “home of the sunset” again on Monday, April 16 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The open-air event promises a bounty of beverage and palate-pleasing plates and a sunset to match. With free general admission, foodies can stroll 45 local restaurants’ edibles, including seafood, European dishes, and vegetarian offerings. Tickets can be bought based upon what looks best.

“The unavailability of Truman Waterfront, our traditional venue, last year was a blessing in disguise,” said Scott Pridgen, executive director of A.H. of Monroe County, Inc., which benefits from the three-hourfestival of food and drink. “It forced us to re-invent the event, now in its 23rd year.”

Participating restaurants donate time, staff and food. This year, Republic National Distributing Company will have vintage wines and craft beers, with one of the biggest selections ever, according to the event organizers.

Rebecca Balcer, a board member of A.H. Monroe, has volunteered the past couple years at the event, “It’s my favorite event in Key West. You see everyone at it.”

Biking or walking is strongly suggested, for both convenience and to work off the calories.

At the event, attendees can also buy a collectible beer pint glass, which will benefit the 2018 SMART Ride, the annual Miami-to-Key West ride taking place in November.

A TOUR OF THE SENSES Tickets are also available for the Vintners Dinner on Sunday, April 15 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Casa Marina. The “Tour of the Senses” is a nine-course passport to the palate. From passed appetizers to rotating chef stations of entrees and followed by dessert and cheese, the Flagler Ballroom is transformed into a getaway for the palate. Winemakers from some of the top wineries and vineyards are also on-hand to pour wine and champagne and discuss the labels in-depth.

Food and wine lover Kate Miano doesn’t miss the Vintners Dinner. “It’s always been fabulous, but it has really been revamped the past couple of years,” she said. “It’s remarkable to move from table to table and learn from the expertise of the chefs and vintners.”

his week, the nation is recognizing Public Safety Telecommunications Week, honoring those otherwise known as 9-1-1 operators.

“Our communications officers are a crucial part in our efforts to keep this community safe,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “They talk with people in crisis on a regular basis; they keep track of our deputies and detectives and make sure they are safe; and they do it all so well we sometimes take them for granted. This week is a time for us all to remember how hard they work, and how much they do.”

In the islands, this is a function of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, but it’s important to note that they work well and often with all the other agencies, from Key West Police Department (which has its own 9-1-1 call center) to Fish and Wildlife – and their counterparts on the mainland, too.

“Depending on the tower it ‘pings’ off, we sometimes get calls from the Everglades,” said MCSO Lt. Charlene Sprinkle, who oversees the division. “Then we transfer the call to the appropriate number.”

It is a very complicated job, and incredibly stressful. The communications officers have six monitors in front of them and the computer mouse is flitting between screens almost faster than the human eye can track.

The newbie on the 17-person telecommunications team already has two years under her belt. Two years.

“The most important takeaway is that these calls can be life and death. There’s nothing more important than that,” said Salisha LaPompe.

Terri Devooght has been on the job for 28 years. She remembers when telecommunicators kept track of officers and calls with a punch card system. She said that over the years, the nature of the calls has changed too.

“More violent domestic situations, major crashes. We get a lot of those,” Devooght said.

Every call gets answered — more than 44,000 emergency calls in any given year but also non-emergency calls between officers or agencies to verify bits of information. The operators also check to see if persons encountered by law enforcement officials are wanted in this county, or anywhere else in the United States or Canada. It also dispatches all the calls for EMS and fire rescue in Monroe County. The operators also “flight follow” every single Trauma Star flight of critically injured or ill patients to the mainland.

“They track the fuel levels, the estimated time of arrival, destination, crew and even patient status,” Sprinkle said.

The communications division is “customer oriented,” said Sprinkle, adding she follows a policy set by then-Sheriff Rick Roth. “If they call you and want to know why the grass is growing up and not down, you send a deputy.”

Many times, their job is something akin to a bloodhound. For example, the first notice of a migrant landing in the Lower Keys was a 9-1-1 call. The caller kept repeating “Cuba” over and over again and the signal was garbled. Using the tools available, the communications division was able to send the right people to the approximate right area.

“We were able to get a GPS location off the call,” said LaPompe.

It takes months and months of work to become a certified 9-1-1 Public Safety Officer. There are currently a few positions open. For more information, email csprinkle@keysso.net.

The communications department can track smart phone users to within 100 yards. In a rural setting, that is very helpful. If, for example, the caller is in an apartment block, that is more difficult.

The number of screens in front of each 9-1-1 operator. One is to dispatch officers or EMS; another to make and monitor radio calls; others show tower locations, officer locations and any information available about the caller if he or she is using a landline or VoIP number.

Monroe County is about six months away from a 9-1-1 texting service. Its use will only be appropriate in situations like an active shooter or hostage type situation or for hearing-impaired callers.

THE 5 “W’s”

Where? What? Who? Why? Weapons? Those are the five answers 9-1-1 operators must establish when taking the 9-1-1 call. The “where” always comes first, so operators can immediately dispatch the right help. After that, they need the callers to stay on the line so they can determine matters like officer safety.

Thirty years ago, the 9-1-1 operators used punch cards to keep track of officers responding to calls.

he fights the good fight but peppers it with a joke or two. Stephanie Kaple, executive director of Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, has been at the front lines tackling the housing crisis in the Florida Keys and it’s not easy. The Ohio native with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toledo never quite saw herself in the position she is in now, helping the hundreds of homeless individuals and families affected by the hurricane.

“It’s always about the next thing; we solve one problem, but then move on. It’s very challenging,” said Kaple. The coalition is the bridge for homeless people to access resources in Monroe County and

Kaple’s heart in 100 percent in it. Next, she will also be the new chair for The Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group, helping coordinate non-profits after hurricanes.

Answering an ad in the paper 12 years ago, Kaple said, “I actually moved here for the homeless, not the beaches or the bars.” But there is a lighter side. Kaple does stand-up comedy, is known for her high heel habit, has won the Key Lime Pie Contest, the Pet Masquerade Look Alike, The Mel Fisher Bikini Contest and the Key West Story Slam Grand Slam.

As for why she loves the Keys, “The cheap rent and extensive shoe store selection.” Ba da bum.

What should people know about the Outreach Coalition? That homelessness is something that can happen to anyone when things just get a little off track. Being able to ask for help for housing struggles and work to get back into housing is a really hard thing. I wish more people understood how humbling it is to not have a home.

What is your greatest achievement? When someone tells me after a comedy show that they related to a joke. I did some jokes about my mom one show; after, a lady came up and said her mom had passed away a few weeks ago and it was the first time she laughed remembering the crazy things her mom did. I was so happy I could give someone a chance to laugh after sadness.

What’s a big achievement for the coalition after Irma? FKOC jumped right in after the storm with our homelessness prevention program. Before a lot of other assistance came in, we were able to help a lot of people who couldn’t pay their rents, mortgages, and other bills. I am really proud that FKOC’s staff knew that despite our own stresses and home issues we had a bigger mission to serve the community.

How did you get into stand-up comedy? It turns out my life is kind of funny, or so sad that it’s funny to other people. Now whenever something really odd happens, I think, ‘Find the funny.’

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Stiletto Girl … there is actually a costume in my closet.

What is your nerdiest passion? I am a “Young & the Restless” expert. I could be a Y&R historian if that was a real paying job. I DVR it everyday and then watch it while I get ready for work. Nothing makes me madder than something interrupting it.

What is your most treasured possession?

I have my two stuffed animals from when I was little, a monkey and a bear. They are my go-to when I don’t feel good or am too stressed out.

If invisible, what would you do? Stiletto Girl can be invisible. So if I tell you what I do I’ll blow my cover.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? CoCo Chanel.

In celebration of Earth Day, the Florida Keys Wildlife Society – the friends group for the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges – is partnering with Southernmost Runners club for a 5K Run/Walk race in Key West the morning of April 21.

This is the 22nd annual Earth Day race, made possible by Marci L. Rose, a Key West attorney, and many sponsors. Rose is passionate about ecology and the natural environment of the Florida Keys and selected the Florida Keys Wildlife Society as the beneficiary of the race “because of the tremendous work the Society does to help protect the environment” and the hands-on cleanup effort of their volunteers - who remove literally tons of trash from our beaches and wild lands every year.

The start/finish line is at Atlantic and White streets – the McCoy Indigenous Park/KeyWest Wildlife Center. The course runs along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean for a beautiful early morning run.

I

t’s still great – maybe even better. Great Events Catering Company is a Key West institution operating for more than 25 years. Taking ownership five years ago, Julie Schreck and husband, chef Dave Fuhrman, knew what they were getting into with the long history and reputation of the company, but they also knew there was room to make it even better.

The offer to buy the company seemed like a no-brainer for Schreck, a popular wedding planner, and Fuhrman, a chef at local restaurants such as Hot Tin Roof, Antonia’s, La Te Da, A&B Lobster House and the Conch Republic Seafood Company. There wasn’t a better way to combine their talents than to go into business together.

“Great Events had the recognition but just needed a facelift, and we wanted to attract more local interest again, which is happening,” said Fuhrman. They modernized the offices, created a contemporary website and revamped their approach to catering as a whole. They implemented marketing strategies and got their name out with pro bono work.

“We wanted to introduce new trends into the Key West market and provide what’s happening in other cities. You need to be versed in the industry,” Fuhrman said.

He is proud that his company can cover the spectrum of wants and needs of his clientele. He can provide live food stations at events so food is cooked to order; sus-

Now, the couple is happy to see success with their approach. Great Events recently covered 25 events in 10 days, “House parties are back and it’s a great crowd down here.”

Repeat local clients and compliments like “best wedding food ever” make Fuhrman happy because catering has moved away from the rubber chicken dinner.

“It’s quite special to be part of such an industry down here,” said Schreck. “Great Events is an incredible brand, we have an incredibly qualified staff and it feels good to get it back to its reputation of 30 years.”

ENGAGEMENT In 2013, Jeremy Shinn dropped to one knee on the hump of the 7 Mile Bridge mid-run to propose to his now wife Amy. Amy was caught totally off guard, even though Shinn, a little faster than her, didn’t leave her in his dust. Shinn, who graduated from Marathon High School in 1998, was just worried he would lose the ring out of his pocket before the hump. The two were married later that year at Sunset Park on Key Colony Beach and on their second wedding anniversary their son Evan was born. Due to injuries, the couple won’t be on the bridge this year, but have fond memories for the run.

BEER CHUGGING The year was 2010, or was it 2007?

The details are a little foggy. Less than two miles in, the hump of the bridge is home to many running selfies in April, but it was a lot of Jager at a Christmas party at The Hurricane that sealed two runners’ fate. “The hardest part was running that far with a beer in my pocket,” said Todd Spano, who bet buddy Neil Cataldo he could beat the bus.

“At that point, drinking the beer was more about survival than the bet,” said Cataldo, whose only bridge training took place at The Brass Monkey.

Spano implies that Cataldo may not have drunk his beer. “I finished a few minutes before him, which therefore means I won the bet,”said Cataldo, deflecting the allegations and claiming he sipped the beer over a couple miles rather than chugging.

Neither Spano nor Cataldo has run the bridge since. “We can’t ever top that.”

Neither has paid up on the $50, $100, or whatever beer tab that might had been up for grabs.

SEVEN MILES OF HIGHLIGHTS (Actually, 6.79 of them…)

When 1,500 runners take off on Saturday, April 14, to run across the 7 Mile Bridge, they may create highlights to rival these.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY The accounts are all about the same: disappointment. In 2012, the race was canceled due to rain and lightning – the only cancellation in 36 years. Some didn’t even get out of bed that morning, while others “waited anxiously while we were being pelted by rain,” according to one person’s account. Another was just mad because her very fast friend was five months pregnant that year; “this was my only chance in life that I could have maybe beat her.” The result? Everyone ended up drinking (except the pregnant lady) at Sunset Grille, which amounted to an overall success.

THE DUDE IN THE FIREFIGHTER GEAR Some wear tutus, or cute socks, or funny shirts, but it’s the guy who runs in full firefighter garb carrying an American flag who leaves everyone in awe. Although The Weekly couldn’t track down the name of the guy, who has been seen in several races during the past few years, he is probably the most talked about runner on the bridge. Heard from inside the bus: “Don’t even think about picking that guy up, he’s already 6.5 miles in!” Each year, he finishes the bridge and we are just glad we don’t have to wash his bunker gear.

THE YOUNG AND THE NOT SO YOUNG 6 and 84. That’s the ages of the youngest and oldest to finish the bridge without being picked up by the bus.

Dave Wilson, who was 84, of Lake Worth holds a time of 1:22:51 and Cullen Sayer-Coleman, who was 6 at the time, beat his brother Fisher’s age, by mere months making him the youngest. We also should throw a big high-five to Roger Fisher of Key Colony Beach, who, at 79, finished the bridge last year in under an hour – he’s running again this year. There are three 79-year-old women competing April 14, along with an 81-year-old man. Just remember that while you are sitting on your couch…

THE “BIG YELLOW SCHOOL BUS” IN THE ROOM “It’s really not that bad,” said one runner, who wishes to remain anonymous. “There’s AC, you get a sweet window seat, and you still get a medal.”

Out of the 1,500 registered runners, an average of 150 to 200 runners don’t actually cross the finish line via foot; they cross it via school bus. (Editor’s note to all runners: if you see Kristen Livengood, make sure you are in front of her – she’s come in dead last to cross the line via foot twice, seconds away from the 1:30:00 cut off time; last years’ time: 1:29:54.) If you are pushing the limit and are asked by a polite police officer to get on the bus, just do it, or they will take your number and you will never be able to run again … we’ve seen it happen.

eel like running across a bridge in the Florida Keys without waking up early or breaking a sweat? Join the fourth annual Cow Key Channel Bridge Run on Sunday, April 15.

It is the only Zero K Bridge Run ever. The event is free, but T-shirts and number bibs are available online at cowkeybridgerun.com; a portion of the proceeds benefits the Monroe County Sheriff’s Animal Farm. The theme this year is “icows of rock.” (Check out the merch including the “discow inferno” tank tops. Travolta would be jealous.)

The bridge is about 300 feet long. Runners will gather near the Overseas Heritage Trail on the Key West side and finish on the Stock Island side. A water station will be located mid-bridge (ahem), and volunteers and signs will let participants know that cars drive on roads and that if they walk in front of moving cars it will hurt really bad. (Seriously, participants must stay on the trail.)

Free parking is available at the main garage of the Marriott Beachside. Participants are encouraged to buy a beverage or snack at the resort, to continue this friendly partnership. The racers are invited to “graze” beginning at 10 a.m. on the bay side of the Key West end of the bridge.

The race has five heats starting with the fastest runners, followed by pets with humans, relay teams, the “stampede” main event, and finishing with the slowest walkers who must maintain forward motion to keep from being disqualified.

The Cow Key Channel Bridge Run started as a joke four years ago. We are still laughing. This is serious fun.

ocal law enforcement, volunteers and an awesome group of kids showed up for the Special Olympics Torch run on April 6.

Starting at the Florida Keys Community College, there were runners, bicyclists and a caravan of amazing people from Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, state Department of Law Enforcemcent, Key West Police Department, Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. The group made stops at Gerald Adams Elementary School, Sheriff’s Office Headquarters Building, Publix Supermarket (Publix is a major contributor to Special Olympics), Poinciana Elementary School, Key West High School, Horace O’Bryant School and MARC House for a total of 7.5 miles.

lly Claire was all smiles at her Big Pine Key house on Angelfish Road on April 6 as Habitat for Humanity of the Lower Keys volunteers made repairs.

They were busy cutting drywall, hanging doors and painting new walls.

Swimmer Diana Nyad was one of those volunteers. She and Bonnie Stoll of EverWalk, a national walking initiative, were in Key West from Monday to Friday leading 10mile walks daily.

“Bonnie and I came here to do a walk and thought, ‘Let’s not do our usual thing where we walk all day long. Let’s walk 10 miles then volunteer for Habitat,’” Nyad said.

She swam from Havana, Cuba, to Key West in 2013 and said she fell in love with the city and lived there for four years after her 111mile swim.

“All my life I’ve read about the good works of Habitat. Living in the Keys, we came to know the generosity of spirit here,” Nyad said, adding it “broke my heart” to see the Keys devastated by Hurricane Irma.

“You just want to go help, but sometimes you’re in the way,” Nyad said. “But one of the jewels of the United States is that you can say, ‘What can we do to help?’”

Claire said her house was basically a wading pool before volunteer groups showed up to help.

The U.S. National Guard helped with the floors along with Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers and mold remediation teams with nonprofit All Hands and Hearts.

Then, Nyad and the EverWalk team worked all last week on other interior improvements.

“I could not have saved my house without the volunteer groups who helped with this demo.

I’m deliriously happy,” Claire said.

SIMPLER TIMES LEARNING AT THE OLDEST HOUSE

“O

ne of the Missions of the Old Island Restoration Foundation is to provide education and cultural awareness of the rich Key West environment to our local families and children,” said volunteer Andy Herdan, docent and house curator at the Oldest House in Key West. With a grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, the Oldest House has created “Vintage Play Days” where school children come and learn the “old ways.” One such day focused on learning the basics of quill pen calligraphy, and

included a variety of 19th century games such as hoops, quoits, skipping ropes, marbles, and other non-electronic pastimes.

This day the Ecology Group from the May Sands Montessori school learned how environmentally conscious the 19th-century residents of Key West were, with a garden tour, planting and a photographic scavenger hunt, allowing the children to have a visual souvenir of their day at The Oldest House.

The show tells the story of a group of recent college graduates who are pursuing their dreams in the exciting world of New York City. Unfortunately, they are poor (oh, those student loan debts) and are forced to live all the way down in the shabby (and fictional) neighborhood of Avenue Q. Together, the group struggles with finding decent jobs, dates, sex and their ever-elusive purpose in life. The story is told with the help of cute but naughty puppets, and the show is not for children.
