n case you missed it, Time magazine recently published a rather worrisome article about the quality of our bottled water. According to the study, more than 90 percent of 250 water bottles sampled tested positive for micro plastic contamination. The sample was made up of 11 different brands and taken from nine countries. The highest rates of contamination were from the U.S. It also discovered that on average, 10.4 microplastic particles were found per liter.

That’s twice the level of contamination as the research group’s earlier study on contamination rates in tap water. So the Weekly asked…

“I think tourists forget that even though they are visiting, the animals live here. The issues we see often are birds ingesting monofilament line or something that they shouldn’t have. T

he process of preparing for another hurricane season while still recovering from the last one was the main focus for local officials during a visit with U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio Wednesday.

He talked at the Marathon Government Center about Hurricane Irma recovery and reimbursement from the federal government for cleanup costs.

“Local governments have spent a lot of money without any federal help,” Rubio told a table of 20 officials from throughout Monroe County. “It needs to be here, and depending on who you talk to on any given day, it’s either in Tallahassee or in Washington, but it isn’t here.”

The costs associated with Hurricane Irma to Keys governments total about $150 million, breaking down to $93 million for Monroe County, $6.4

million for the Village of Islamorada, $16.9 for the City of Key West and $30 million for the City of Marathon.

Rubio mentioned rules created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 because of fraud and illegal activity involving reimbursement funds.

“There were a lot of things that weren’t right. Now, it’s gone to the other extreme, where reimbursement is taking way too long,” he said, adding some municipalities are taking out lines of credit in order to stay above water.

Marathon has taken out a $10 million line of credit to cover Hurricane Irma recovery costs. Monroe County has a $40 million line of credit. Islamorada and Key West have been able to self-fund projects, but the lack of cash affects which types of projects they can tackle.

ATKINS JOINS WEEKLY NEWS TEAM

T

he Weekly is pleased to announce the addition of reporter Katie Atkins to its staff.

Atkins, 29, is a news veteran who moved to Marathon in 2016 from Jamestown, N.Y., her hometown.

She was a reporter for The Keynoter newspaper from August 2016 to March of this year and covered Marathon High School sports and local

government. Prior to that, she was the city editor of The Post-Journal, Jamestown’s daily newspaper.

For the Weekly, Atkins will travel countywide, covering issues important to residents of the Florida Keys.

“Katie’s excellent writing skills and reputation will only complement our presence in the community. She makes the perfect addition to our team,” said Publisher Jason Koler.

Frigid winters are what drove Atkins south. She’s been known to tell her story of “the negative-20-degree day,” during which she cried because it was “Just. So. Cold.”

“There are a lot of different things happening at the same time. It’s just a question of making a lot of noise,” Rubio said at a press conference in Marathon prior to his visit at the government center.

His stop at Key by the Sea RV park was to talk about canal cleanup, the second focal point of his Keys visit.

Viewing the floating trailers and debris in a long canal tucked between rows of trailers, he asked about how long it would take a contractor to clean one canal.

“About two days,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

The canal at Key by the Sea was one of 17 in Marathon heavily affected

by Irma. Manatees can be seen swimming around and through trailers still floating near the surface along with docks and other debris.

“Thirty-seven of our canals were almost this bad, and so you can multiply that throughout every municipality in the county,” Lindsey said to Rubio.

Keys officials are pursuing the same type of grant that helped clean up the canals after Hurricane Georges in 1998.

“There doesn’t seem to be any impediment other than just releasing the funds,” Rubio said. “I’ll call today.”

According to Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi, there is $540 million available to clean canals through a special program in the federal Department of Agriculture.

Gastesi said the county has asked for $40 million, adding that would include funds to clean up City of Marathon and Village of Islamorada canals.

The National Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) received the application from the Keys on Feb. 15.

The state office, in Gainesville, has already approved the eligibility of 103 canals in the Keys and environmental permits from National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are both in process.

ike many Bahamians, William Dunham and Mary Jane Albury left the islands to settle in Key West. They moved to Rock Harbor in 1886 with their three-weekold son William Beauregard Albury. In 1913, Beauregard and his father constructed a Conch-style wooden house in the vicinity of MM 98. The building, still standing today, would have been

just south of the Over-Sea Railroad’s Rock Harbor Depot. The Albury home remains where it was first constructed and represents the oldest house on Key Largo still standing in its original locale. ourteen teams of underwater hunters ventured out into the waters surrounding Key Largo to remove pesky lionfish on March 31. They managed to slay 420.

The event was the first of seven lionfish derbies to be hosted throughout Florida

by REEF this year. Aimed at reducing the populations of the invasive species, the lionfish derby rewards teams with conservation-friendly prizes for alleviating the impact of the voracious predators.

“The first derby we helped organize was in the Bahamas 10 years ago. In a single day, teams brought in 1,408 lionfish. Nobody had any idea that we’d get that many,” said REEF Director of Special Projects, Lad Akins. “So we started organizing derbies here in Florida as a way to not only remove lionfish, but also increase awareness, and for people to taste how good it is.”

Akins also just wrapped research work that bodes well for future efforts to control lionfish populations.

“We just had a three-year study we did in the Keys and the Bahamas that show that these single-day events on average reduce lionfish populations 52 percent across 192 square kilometers.

Obviously it doesn’t fix the problem. It’s kind of like weeding the garden; you have to keep up with it.”

Akins also said that, over the last five or six years of hosting derbies in the Keys, the average size of the slain lionfish has decreased every year.

“The numbers fluctuate, but the smaller the lionfish, the less it eats and the less it reproduces. So minimizing size is very important in minimizing impacts.”

The lionfish derby returns to Key Largo in mid-September.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I’m in Student Council, National Honor Society, and track, to name a few. I enjoy track because it’s a stress reliever for me and my teammates are fun to be around. Student Council and National Honor Society are important to me because they allow me to help the community that has done so much for me.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Strangely enough, Calculus. I’ve never struggled more in a class, so it taught me both how I need to study in order to succeed and that it’s okay to struggle and ask for help.

What advice would you give underclassmen? Set high goals and work hard to achieve them, but remember that high school is about having fun too.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? My work ethic, my sense of humor, and my Twitter.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to the University of Florida and study English in a pre-law track, then, hopefully, go to Yale’s law school.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? My favorite book, “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? 1. Publish a book. 2. Graduate from law school. 3. Buy a sick Range Rover.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

No. I love the Keys and I appreciate their beauty and the memories I’ve made here, but there is so much else to see in the world.

L

ong before the Florida Keys blossomed, a typical spring afternoon on the island was a little different from how you’d see it today. It goes without saying that it’s kind of a rare feat for an establishment to give off an authentic sense of the “old Keys” without it feeling forced.

But that’s exactly what is happening at The Mar Bar. Located along Casamar Village on Tavernier Creek, the spot is popular among young adults who like a little scenery and sky while they socialize.

There aren’t many places left to enjoy oysters and champagne seaside.

Catchy music chimes out from behind the bar. The puttering of passing vessels and chattering of gulls overhead adds an island touch to the mix. The sunset casts a warm glow and the salty sea air seems to cleanse the day’s stress.

“It’s always good vibes here,” said bartender Tyler Nelson-Brunner. “I came from working in a dive bar in South Florida, so this is the holy grail of oceanfront service industry. Where else can you paddleboard and then get a beer right next door afterwards?”

Mar Bar’s craft beer selection certainly has some gems. Inlet Brewing Company’s Monk in the Trunk Organic Amber Ale and favorites from Cigar City Brewing and Wynwood Brewing Company are on the list. The wine menu has an assortment of reds, whites, rosés, and some bubbly.

Mar Bar has more than just libations, though.

Casamar Seafood Market next door provides the bar with fresh crustaceans like oysters and stone crabs.

The stone crab is prepared right next door and arrives cracked and ready to eat. Crab claws are $3 each and come with a homemade mustard sauce.

Fresh-made fish dip is also served occasionally. Northeastern Blue Point oysters are available at $1.75 each.

“They’re perfect bite-sized oysters and even better when accompanied with horseradish hot sauce and cocktail sauce. They’re phenomenal,” said Frances Shockley, who usually orders half a dozen. “The mustard sauce they serve with the crab claws is amazing.

You can buy the sauce at the market.”

The weekly specials are also worth mentioning.

Grab the girls and “wine” down on Wednesday’s ladies night with $4 house wines. Also on Wednesdays, stone crab claw prices drop to $2, and oysters are only $1. Thirsty Thursday usually welcomes a large contingent of locals, who always receive 10 percent off. The week wraps up with the always fun Reggae Sundays.

Mar Bar is open from 5 to 10 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Treasure Village/Ocean Studies students expand media outreach GABRIEL SANCHEZ

ore and more Upper Keys elementary school students are taking an interest in different forms of media and news. To the untrained eye it may seem like a phase, but to educators it’s exciting.

Charles Fulco began coordinating Treasure Village’s after-school enrichment classes as a way to offer more practical lessons on topics like natural science and astronomy to students.

He was surprised when kids became intrigued with the idea of sharing knowledge and information. So, he went with it.

Now, about a dozen fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students are working together to launch the school’s very first student-run website featuring original content.

“They’re all very much self-starters,” said Fulco.

The website is still in the brainstorming phase, but some ideas have included hosting a weekly show starring guest interviews with local figures, vlogs (video blogging), and a YouTube channel.

“We’re taking the strengths of each of the kids and putting it to work in media,” said Fulco. “We’re also getting a green screen so they can project images behind their broadcasts and are looking into maybe using a semiprofessional quality microphone.”

Students hope to launch the site by the end of April.

Over at Ocean Studies Charter School, students are preparing for upcoming field trips to St. Augustine and Central America by beefing up their photojournalism skills. To help out students, Sabrah Witkamp invited the Weekly to speak to fourth- and fifthgrade students about telling stories through photos.

With an opportunity to capture historical architecture and artifacts on the trips, the students were eager to learn how. Students have been outfitted with Nikon Coolpix digital cameras.

Though limited in capability, the cameras still have a lot of practical uses.

Google’s dashboard lets you explore what it knows about you.

ou probably don’t need a Google search to tell you that Google knows plenty about you.

But you don’t have to download anything. Google makes it easy to see what data it has gathered about you via the web.

Just go to myaccount.google.com/dashboard and dive in.

You leave footprints all over the internet, via web browsers and phones and the apps you use. Your Google dashboard will show you 20 or more sets of tracks, from Google Books — did you buy a book there, or download free editions? — to Google Play (all those apps you use) to your Gmail (if you use it) to your use of Google Maps and more.

The timeline on Google Maps lets you explore the places you’ve been. Sometimes.

So Google knows that I have 45,068 emails. It knows that I am logged in to my Google account on four devices — my phone and three Android tablets, two of which are sitting in drawers in Illinois — and the last time I used each device. It knows that I’m male but doesn’t know my age.

I found stuff I’d forgotten about: the 240 photos from a family reunion several years ago in South Dakota, uploaded to Google so cousins in Utah, Wyoming and Texas could see them. Blogs that we were going to use to keep in touch and plan future excursions.

Funny thing I learned, but can’t explain: Google doesn’t know quite as much about where I am as I thought it would.

If you use Google Maps, you can click on the menu (those three horizontal lines at the top left) and click on “timeline” and see what Google knows about where you’ve been. Here’s where things are a little strange for me: Google knows most every detail about the trip I took with my wife to France last May, down to the 6 minutes at McDonalds on the drive to O’Hare Airport, or the 14 minutes we spent at the tourism office in Monaco. It knows a lot about a few weeks before that trip, too.

But my activity drops off after that.

Google doesn’t know that I was at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Feb. 23 for a spring training baseball game, even though I used Google Maps to get me to the ballpark. I spent several hours at the Marathon Seafood Festival on March 10, but you’d never know it from my Maps timeline. On my phone, which is virtually always with me, my “location history” is turned on. But it’s not generating any history. Which is fine with me, even though I can’t explain it.

Google Ads settings reflect your interests.

Sometimes.

In addition, some of what Google thinks it knows is wrong. In my ad preferences, Google thinks I like athletic apparel and boating. Google, have you met me?

Google would have me believe I like country, classical, rock, folk, blues and pop music. Yeah, no.

Google does nail my geek side: I like computer hardware, computers and electronics, computer components, electronics and electrical, and laptops and notebooks.

Batting 1.000 here, Google.

I’m not even going to get into how web browsers (I use Google’s Chrome) keep track of the places you’ve visited on the internet, and your searches, except to note that web histories timestamp everything, but they can’t exactly pinpoint how you get down the rabbit hole. So I know that at 11:31 p.m. on March 28, I clicked on Billboard’s “The 20 Best Jimmy Buffett Songs (Updated 2018).” But I cannot for the life of me figure out where that link came from.

ay Jam 24 is going back to its roots and staying local.

ICE is taking Bay Jam back to its original form, featuring some of the best of Upper Keys musicians and bands. Bay Jam was started in 1995, to lessen the impact of large state and federal funding cutbacks in school art and music programs.

The music is at Founders Park, MM 87, on Sunday, April 8. Gates open at 10 a.m. and music begins at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

The event’s lineup includes some of the Upper Keys’ favorite musicians, as well as touring artist Matt Phillips. Felix and Baga Tricks, Bill Todd, Pasta and the Lower Mat Rats, the Usual Suspects and Dave Feder are just some of the Keys musicians performing.

“In 1995, local high school teachers, musicians and artists

saw the first Bay Jam as an opportunity to support arts and music education for students,” said Feder.

“Twenty-four years later, we are closing in on a half million dollars in scholarships and grants. To high school students, these Arts Enhancement Scholarships are a big deal.”

ICE is offering $100 tickets to a VIP Tent, featuring food, beer and wine from Florida Keys Brewing Company, stainless steel commemorative pint cups, Bay Jam T-shirts and more. Tickets, and more information, are available at keysice.com.

Attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs, but coolers are not permitted. Proceeds and donations from ICE events help continue its mission.
