What’s your money personality? What city should you live in? What ’80s pop icon do you resemble? You recognize these questions from the Facebook quizzes and take note of your friends who post the answers to these, and other seemingly innocuous questions. But over this past weekend, it was reported that Cambridge Analytica mined the data from this type of quiz, and that subsequent targeted advertising based on personality, location and other factors helped sway the election towards President Trump. (Then, former President Obama’s campaign manager said it, too, used similar tactics.) So, we ask…

In the height of season, Kathy Gilmore, manager at Lazy Dog Adventures got that she should be living in a cabin on a deserted mountain. But, her favorite: What’s your Patronus?

“I took the ‘What percentage of an asshole are you based on your profile picture’ quiz,” said Sue Puskedra of Suzie’s Estates. “It said 210 percent.” She then changed her profile picture and retook the test without sunglasses and got .01 percent; that’s more like it!

T

he Florida Housing Finance Corporation (Florida Housing) unanimously approved three applications this week to fund the development of affordable housing in Monroe County.

Florida Housing received three applications to build affordable rental housing in the Keys, hardest hit by Hurricane Irma. It initially approved enough money for just two developments. But, during the recently concluded 2018 legislative session, an additional $15 million in State Apartment Incentive Loan (SAIL) funding was also allocated for housing in Monroe County that Florida Housing will administer.

That’s on top of the $2.6 million in Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and $10.4 million in SAIL program dollars already approved.

Typically, the Florida Housing Finance Corporation only chooses one Keys project every year, and competition among developers seeking funding is high. In 2018, Florida Housing approved one project in Marathon, and one in Key West — Residences of Marathon and Marty’s Place, respectively. The third project to be approved with the extra funds is the Crystal Cove development, also in Marathon.

“What the county has gained is extra housing for low and extremely low income residents,” said Scott Pridgen, executive director of AIDS Help in Monroe County. AIDS Help is developing the Marty’s Place project in Key West.

The agency has almost 100 units in Key West and serves special needs clients, in addition to AIDS patients.

including workforce, and this particular project addresses low income.”

Due to the rigorous standards for Florida Housing financing, these three projects are as close to “shovel ready” as possible — complete with site plans, traffic studies, municipal approval and sufficient building allocations. The final Florida Housing step is a financial vetting, including an examination of the proposed rent.

THE PROJECTS: • Marty’s Place — 47 units AIDS Help currently has 16 units on this property in Key West, located near the corner of Venetia and Dennis streets. Those will be knocked down and replaced with a U-shaped, threestory building featuring a variety of apartment styles.

• Residences at Marathon Key — 55 units This project is located at 4800 Overseas Highway in Marathon on the gulfside. The site plans show nine twostory buildings and four single-family lots. It will also have a pool and picnic area. This project is located adjacent to the next project, Crystal Cove.

• Residences at Crystal Cove — 46 units Located between 47th and 50th Streets on the gulfside, the plan is to develop 28 RV parking spaces on the water complete with a pool and clubhouse, 46 affordable housing units, and 7,700 square feet of commercial space. The RV resort will be separated from the affordable housing by a gate.

t was late 2017 when social media blew up with images of Alabama Senator-elect Doug Jones attending a Jimmy Buffett concert at his Margaritaville restaurant. To the casual observer, the stars were simply aligned. Jones was coming off one of the most publicized U.S. Senate victories in recent memory, while Buffett offered fans a rare chance to catch him in his original provenance.

But for those familiar with Robin Smith-Martin, whose native roots run deep within Key West culture, politics and Jimmy Buffett, it came as no surprise that he was behind the match.

“I knew Doug (Jones) was coming into town and Jimmy (Buffett) called me to say he was doing a show,” said Smith-Martin, who served on the Monroe County School Board. “I told him the newly elected senator from Alabama was going to be here and he (Buffett) was like, ‘Hey, I would like to meet that guy.’ So I brought the two together and it was an incredible night for everyone involved.”

That story is the embodiment of Smith-Martin. The Key West native loves his hometown, thrives on connecting people and owns a perpetual work ethic that reinforces his charismatic persona. So who better to be christened Key West’s “ultimate concierge” than Smith-Martin – who recently began OurKeyWest (The OKW), which focuses on premium services for those seeking an authentic Key West experience.

“As someone who grew-up in Key West, working as a captain, cook, musician, bartender and entrepreneur, it’s been frustrating to witness the millions of visitors who never experience the real wonders of local life in the Keys,” said Smith-Martin. “There is so much more below the surface. “So, we are redesigning the guest experience,” said Smith-Martin from his desk at the firm’s downtown office above Wyland Gallery. “We are focusing on the natural world and human interaction, developing a curated portfolio of vendors and activities who

share our vision for a more compelling guest experience.”

Smith-Martin said he is always impressed by the talented concierge community in Key West, but that much of the service has been monopolized by the watersports industry that has vertically integrated into hotels. The resulting guest experience, Smith-Martin believes, is limited by watersports sales channels “We’re primarily focused on VIP and premium concierge services for our vacation rental, guest house and resort partners,” said Smith-Martin. “We’ve hosted five super yachts in the past year, and frequently facilitate chartered jet service for VIP clients. It’s amazing after all these years, how many people are just discovering Key West.”

The OKW already manages a fullservice local concierge support team and call center that operates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily to support local concierges and guests across the island. But the ultimate goal is a singleminded mission: more fun. SmithMartin believes each guest deserves a personalized itinerary and his company’s ability to offer pre-arrival surveys and individual interviews provides the local experience that so many visitors long to discover.

She’s also a certified deputy. When Billy Freeman was sheriff, he encouraged her to go through the police academy. He told her the cops would trust her more, and she would get a better understanding of the job.

Herrin came to the Keys on a road trip at the tender age of 23 from her home in Seattle after receiving a degree in journalism from the University of Washington.

Being on call, 24/7 Easiest part of your job? It is always interesting. Never the same thing twice. ecky Herrin said she always knew she would pursue a degree in journalism. When pressed for reasons, she stated simply “Oh, it was about righting the wrongs.” (We apologize for the punny headline; we couldn’t resist.)

The public information officer for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is stepping down at the end of this month after a 30-year career. The job is much more intricate than simply writing press releases on notable crimes in the Keys. She also facilitates internal communications, is the watchdog of the sheriff’s smartphone app and Facebook page, produces an annual report and fields calls from news outlets all over the world.

Which law-enforcement event/ crime/situation sticks out in your mind? There have been way too many to count. Funny and sad. The saddest standout was probably the murder of Michael and Missy McIvor in Tavernier in 1992. The funniest: the naked drunk guy, yelling “I’m king of the world” on Big Coppitt Key, and the woman who was shaving her pubic area as she drove her car at Bahia Honda. But there have been so many of these things …

After the retirement party, what’s the first thing you do? I don’t do parties much. I do love to travel. I will be doing that all of April and part of May. Number one lesson from Hurricane Irma?

The ability to communicate with the outside world during a crisis like that is a tenuous

thing, and the need to is vital. We have to figure out how to do better at it in the future.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating; who walks in and sits next to you? I am a huge introvert, so I actually prefer to eat alone with a really good book. My favorite books are the Lord of the Rings series … so how about J.R.R. Tolkien, if he was still alive. I would like to talk to him about his writing process.

Favorite Keysy thing to do? Read a book by the pool on a beautiful winter day.

Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? I don’t watch a lot of TV. Favorite guilty pleasure? Stouffer’s Macaroni and Cheese.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A newspaper journalist and that is what my college degree is in.

SCHOOL SAFETY STILL TOP PRIORITY Raschein speaks about Keys schools

C

oming off spring break, the shooting that took place on Valentine’s Day in Parkland, Florida is still fresh on the minds of the legislature, school board, teachers, and parents.

“I am committed to you and stand by you,” said Rep. Holly Raschein at Tuesday’s school board meeting. “I am not shy to ask for anything on your behalf.”

She recapped the legislative session that wrapped last week, saying that school safety is top priority.

Senate Bill 7026 included gun control, Baker Act, and mental health provisions; implementing the policy is where financial issues in the county will start.

Superintendent Mark Porter said, “We will have to get creative with how we will allocate this funding, as issues of training and student mental wellness are also priorities for our district in relation to safety and security for all students and staff.”

Porter added that four sessions have been held with stakeholders including the FBI, local police, State Attorney, and mental health providers.

The bill mandates that student resource officers (SROs) need to be on every campus, although there were some questions on whether the district is responsible for charter schools.

Another issue the school faces is the lack of juvenile crisis intervention service in the Keys. The closest is in Miami, making it difficult for students who need help to receive it.

Stanley Switlik teacher and former police officer Tracy Zander said in regard to school safety that she is not a fan of metal detectors and would happily take the training to arm herself in her classroom considering her background. “Money would be better spent on a social worker,” she said. “We need to create a culture of love and support for the students.”

Parents Catherine Dunn and Allison Sayer reiterated sentiments made clear at the last meeting, that they want to see change happen sooner than later at the school regarding the safety of the children.

families to have to feel that way.

“There is a hallway no one even uses any more because of the memories of the shooting,” she said. “Let’s not let that happen in our schools.”

Raschein added that the mandates are steep and aggressive. The legislature cut $400 million from other programs to fund the safe schools allocations. Raschein is a mom of a kindergartner in the school district, and added that the new requirements are a burden but absolutely necessary.

“I believe in my heart that it’s needed,” she said. Two hundred million of the allocation will be reoccurring.

The board discussed a millage increase to cover the funding shortfall for SROs and possibly counselors. “If we don’t find other funding for this, we will have to cut from other positions,” said board member John Dick, who along with the board, said he’d like to see this on the August or November ballot. He added the rate increase would be around $6 per $100,000 in home value.

In other school news: • Kristen Condella, instructional materials coordinator, spoke about digital classroom plans that started in 2014. She discussed the use of iPads and Chromebooks for Monroe County students, sharing results of in-school and out-of-school uses of technology.

The board moved to purchase an additional 730 Chromebooks. Students do not take them home, but after the hurricane were asked if they were needed at home, with no one taking them up on the offer. Porter said if any students need to sign them out for after school, the offer still stands.

• James Drake, executive director of finance and performance, did a follow-up of the preliminary findings of the operations audit. Eleven issues were brought the board’s attention, including school advisory councils adhering to the Sunshine Law, issues with construction project documentation, background screenings, disaster recovery plans, student social security numbers, and procedures for cash deposits. All of the items brought up have been rectified or are in the process of being rectified. The board also discussed accepting credit cards for events where cash is collected.

he Monroe County Tourist Development Council wants unallocated capital resource money to be used for advertising the Florida Keys.

Before 2017, any unallocated building project money was “swept” into the advertising fund. But last year, the Monroe County Commission, which governs the Tourist and Development Council, made two significant changes to how bed tax money is spent.

“I have to hear more justification for this,” said Monroe County Commissioner Danny Kolhage. “I’m not sure that we’ve allowed enough time for recovery, to see how the revenue comes in.”

Each requested amount is based on the percent of bed tax revenue the five districts are down from January 2017 figures. Bed taxes refer to the portion of taxes tourists are charged for lodging in Monroe County. The tourism council publishes monthly

One change is that municipal and nonprofit projects would be reimbursed at a higher rate — 100 percent for cities, 75 percent for nonprofits.

The second is that unused capital could not roll over unless there was a special case.

Apparently, Hurricane Irma qualifies as that special case.

In a letter to its advisory committees in February, TDC Chairperson Rita Irwin, Marketing Director Kelli Fountain, and office manager Maxine Pacini expressed an intention to make the advertising request, and asked the five committees to vote independently on the decision to go forward with the request.

tax revenue reports, or “Four Penny” reports, to track earnings, or in this case, lack thereof. Because the reports take months to complete, December revenue reports were used as benchmarks for the committees to consider prior to their vote. According to the council’s March Four Penny Revenue report, Monroe County as a whole is down 20.3 percent in revenue earnings. The five districts show vast disparity, however.

District 1, Key West, is down 14.1 percent. District 2, the Lower Keys, is down 15 percent. District 3, Marathon, is down 30.3 percent. The most affected area, District 4, Islamorada, is down 62.6 percent. District 5, Tavernier and Key Largo, is only down 8.6 percent.

So, for example, in District 5 (Key Largo), there is about $513,000 in unallocated funds. Using the percentage proposed by TDC, 8.6 percent or about $44,000 would be used for advertising instead of brick and mortar projects.

That, however, is planning for an uncertain future. According to the TDC’s own numbers, the county is already making a strong recovery as a tourist destination. How much to spend on Times Square advertising in, say, October of next year is anybody’s guess.

“What was nice about the way it was rewritten was that there was a clause that each district could also ask for consideration to reallocate money,” said Irwin. “Here we have a storm that affected the five districts differently.”

In District 4 (Islamorada), the case for rolling over the money was the obvious choice. Lodging has been the primary reason revenue numbers are down. With just over half of its 1,300 lodging rooms available, the district needed to have a plan for a budget, said District 4 Advisory Committee Chair Patti Stanley.

“We had the highest percentage of hotel rooms out of commission and have seen the highest percentage of bed tax revenue loss. That’s our pot of money for advertisement, so we were looking at nothing coming in for next year,” said Stanley.

District 3, Marathon, voted to request funds be considered for reallocation. Marathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron, who sits on the DAC board, and is also running for a seat on the county commission, cast a dissenting vote. Coldiron said the money originally budgeted for bricks and mortar should stay in bricks and mortar.

“I completely understand that after the hurricane we need advertisement. However, I also believe the money from bricks and mortar could help recover the beaches and provide money for infrastructure so that when a tourist comes here they have a positive experience,” said Coldiron.

Bed tax revenue numbers are slowly improving. From December 2017 to January 2018, District 3’s earnings recovered by 6 percent. Having money for future capital improvements could improve both tourist impressions and local morale, she said.

“I empathize with both sides; however, the City of Marathon actually pulled projects and didn’t ask for bricks and mortar money several months ago, realizing money was tight. Yet we have Coco Plum Beach and Sombrero Beach that could benefit from that money, as well as some of our non-profits,” said Coldiron.

Following the hurricane, the tourist council had allocated $1 million for emergency capital funding and for emergency advertisement. According to the tourist council’s director, Stacey Mitchell, those advertising dollars have been exhausted.

At the tourist council’s March 14 meeting, its board finalized the special request to move the funds. The request now moves to Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to consider at its regular meeting on Thursday, April 19. If approved, the more than $1.6 million additional advertising dollars will be reflected in the budget the council proposes to the County Commissioners this summer.

ccording to the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections, the deadline to declare a candidacy for the November 2018 election is still months away — June 22 at noon, to be specific. And, yet, the roster already looks pretty full. For example, there are nine candidates seeking the mayor’s seat in Key West.

Robert “Bob” Goodreau did not respond to the Keys Weekly’s request for information.

Kate Miano withdrew from the race on March 19, although her status is still active on the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections’ website. In a press release, she stated her support for candidate Teri Johnston and their “nearly identical views on the problems and solutions facing Key West.”

I publish daily at afoolsworkneverends.blogspot.com. You can get to know me there and in my comments under blue paper articles. This is my sixth Key West mayor race. As an Independent, I ran three times for county commission and one time for school board. I have spoken hundreds of times during citizen comments at local government meetings. I am acutely familiar with Key West and Florida Keys issues. I tend to say what no one else says. I do not litter with “vote for me” roadside signs and radio commercials, which say nothing about candidates.

I finance my own campaigns, which keeps me independent.

I rely on grassroots word of mouth to get votes.

I served on the Bahama Village Redevelopment Advisory Committee, Truman Waterfront Advisory Board, and Key West High School Truancy Team; and as past president of the Interfaith Ministerial Alliance and on the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition Board. I am the administrator for the Key West Health and Rehabilitation Center and have lived in the Keys for two years. I saw the community come together after Hurricane Irma and I wanted to become involved. One of my top concerns is the senior community because I believe we need to take care of that generation. As a married man, and father of a 4-year-old, I also want to promote Key West as a family destination, especially in summer months. I care about affordable housing because I have 120 staff members who need a decent place to live.

Recently, I have been very vocal about not converting Bayshore Manor into a homeless shelter because it’s not an appropriate location right across the street from a school. I served in student government at Florida Atlantic University where I earned a degree in finance and economics.

When I practiced law, I closed lots of residential real estate deals with mortgage financing and represented homebuyers and sellers and a few real estate companies, building contractors and landlords. A Client’s Guide to Hiring, Firing, Using and Suing Lawyers.” (Prentice-Hall Division of Simon & Schuster).

••••• A: Enhancing the lives of residents. The question we should ask of any proposed action: “Will it benefit the community of Key West?” Whether responding to the need for affordable housing, economic diversification, reduced traffic congestion, enhanced public transit, support services for seniors, recreational opportunities for youth, or response to sea-level rise, our solutions must respect the past, enhance the present, and envision a future that is inclusive and benefits all. My professional ministerial training and experience in consensus building coupled with extensive leadership on civic and government boards makes me uniquely qualified to lead our city in this direction.

••••• A: The most important issue facing Key West residents is the lack of affordable housing, which has been further exacerbated in the wake of Hurricane Irma. In my career as a nursing home administrator I have also managed HUD subsidized housing communities and therefore have extensive knowledge in affordable and low-income housing regulations. I plan to utilize this experience to provide real solutions to our housing crisis by looking at both short-term and long-term ways we can offer more housing options for the many residents who simply cannot afford the skyrocketing housing costs and by re-evaluating the transient permitting process.

I am a 44- year-old candidate for mayor of Key West. I currently reside in District 6 and one block from Districts 1 and 5.

I grew up in the Washington D.C. area with both parents working for the federal government, with many dinner conversations focusing on the frustration of bureaucratic red tape. I received a bachelor of science degree in finance from Clemson University, and spent 15 years doing research on government documents cutting the red tape.

I have lived in Key West for four years and have worked for Key West Express for the last three years. There, I thoroughly enjoy being an ambassador for Key West. I am also on the board of directors of the Key West Bight Preservation Association where I work to maintain the historic environment that is friendly to a working waterfront for tenants and visitors alike.

I was born in New Orleans, but after more than 70 trips to Key West since 1998, moved here with my wife Maura five years ago and bought Two Friends. I attended the University of Texas and studied mechanical engineering and business administration. The majority of my professional experience is running businesses that build powerlines and pipelines. I am an honorary consul for Hungary, and I was appointed by the governor of Louisiana to the board of the Port of New Orleans, where I served as the property and insurance chairman before and after Hurricane Katrina; then chairman of the board. I am a commercial and instrument pilot with more than 40 years and 3,400 hours of flight time, and a certified dive master. I am also a recovering musician and sing karaoke (badly).

I am running for mayor because I am the proven, experienced candidate with the political will to make a difference. For eight years, I was your voice of reason serving as city commissioner championing recycling, solid waste master plan and historic preservation. As president of FIRM, I worked with an incredible grassroots, dedicated group. We fought to repeal a 26 percent windstorm rate increase, rolled back rates by 34 percent and froze them for four years for Monroe County. As a small business owner, I am committed to implement programs to keep our valued employees and struggling families here.

I will advocate for sidewalks and bike lanes to provide a safe alternative to cars. Climate change, sea level rise, clean drinking water and water pollution threats all require effective strategic planning for a proactive community. I am a proven advocate for strategic planning.

I was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1965 and moved to Key West 12 years ago. I have been employed at Key West Chemical, The Island House, and Delta at the Key West airport. And as a stand-up comedian for 801BINGO for the last nine years, I know what it takes to live in Key West — loyalty, spirit and true love of your community.

I moved back to Key West in 2013 after owning and operating a real estate and construction company on the Chesapeake Bay from 2000 to 2013.

The move back was inspired by the recession and a desire to return to the island I loved to raise my family and be a positive member of the community.

Presently I own and operate Key West Luxury Real Estate and Darrin N Smith Builder. My wife, and mother of my children, works at Horace O’Bryant and is finishing her second master’s degree. I hold a B.S. in aviation management from Florida Institute of Technology (associated with NASA) and am licensed as a real estate broker, certified building contractor, 100-ton nearshore captain, and pilot.

I look forward to serving my community with the experience I gained interacting with the local government and community. I am also a graduate of the Key West Ambassador Class.

••••• A: The biggest problem facing our community is the lack of affordable housing, but that is also the root of several other issues like traffic. As our valuable workforce moves up the Keys, not only do we have more cars coming into town, but we are losing our local character. I have a degree in financial management with a minor in accounting from Clemson University, but my most valuable asset is my problem-solving ability. Once bureaucrats stop talking in circles and wasting time on asinine issues, we can roll up our sleeves and get to work on the real problems.

••••• A: Quality of life for the citizens of Key West — which includes housing, family recreation, parking, traffic; the whole shebang. When the city puts the 27,000 who live here first, they will be happy and take care of their families and our 3 million visitors. Why me? When we bought Two Friends, we gave our employees benefits. The governor of Louisiana appointed me to port of New Orleans because I build unity. I have handled adversity, like Katrina. I have run businesses with more than $52 million in sales and 400 employees working in environmentally sensitive areas.

I am very qualified.

••••• A: Keeping our struggling work force and young families in Key West. Attainable housing is a large component of a “livable Key West;” however, earning potential, affordable insurance rates and taxes, affordable daycare and health care all play a role in keeping these vital community members in Key West. As Monroe County planning commissioner, I’m actively working to advance all qualified workforce/ affordable housing initiatives to mitigate our housing stress in Key West. I will continue to be a strong voice protecting my community as Mayor.

••••• A: The one problem that is most important facing the future is economics — from housing, to pay for the working, to the delicate balance between tourist and locals. It’s the economy.

••••• A: By far the most important issue Key West as a whole needs to address is the quality of life for our full-time residents. The present mayor and commission has done a very good job of looking out for the people of the island, but I believe we can do better as we move forward with the many great plans they have underway by making many important changes that can benefit the whole without damaging any one group or individual. Almost every good businessman or woman will agree that every transaction can be a win-win for the parties involved.

he Equality Florida Key West Celebration will honor Jim and Cathy Stentzel with the Voice for Equality award.

“Jim and Cathy have always cared about the welfare of children,” said Equality Florida’s CEO and co-founder Nadine Smith. “For years, their donations, both personal and from their foundation, have been directed to combat bullying of LGBTQ students.”

Equality Florida initiated the Safe and Healthy Schools Project, which is becoming a national model. The Stenzels made an initial donation to help establish the program. Starting 18 months ago, the program has been implemented in 59 of the state’s 67 school districts, including Monroe County, to be proactive and supportive of all students so they can flourish.

“We have trained all elementary, middle and high school principals, district directors of all departments, as well as all guidance counselors, social workers and school psychologists pertaining to LGBTQ sensitivity, cultural competency and best practices,” said De Palazzo of Equality Florida, while working closely with Theresa Axford, Monroe County’s executive director of Teaching and Learning.

A representative from the district also attended a two-day school related LGBTQ conference in St. Petersburg, Florida in February.

At the event, Smith will be delivering a State of the State address defining the accomplishments, risks and challenges that face the LGBTQ community.

‘Avenue Q’ comes back to Key West

O

ne of the most celebrated productions in the Waterfront Playhouse returns next week for a three-week run.

The entire run of “Avenue Q” last season sold out.

“I’m thrilled we are bringing back this wonderful production,” said Director Danny Weathers. “Even if you saw it last year, it’s the kind of show you can see again and again. It’s such a smart, hilarious and ultimately touching musical. And it’s a joy to be working with this incredible cast. Every one of them is a quadruple threat — great singer, actor, dancer and puppeteer.”

“Avenue Q” won the “Triple Crown” of Tony Awards – Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical – beating out “Wicked.” The show is still

running off-Broadway in New York and has had hundreds of productions all over the world.

“Avenue Q” is the story of a group of young Manhattanites, who have recently graduated from college and live all the way down in the shabby (and fictional) neighborhood of Avenue Q. Together, the group struggles with finding decent jobs, dates, sex and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

The musical is done through a combination of actors and puppets and has been called “Sesame Street” for grown-ups. It’s for audiences 16 and up, with adult language, themes and full frontal puppet nudity and sex. It’s hilarious, but not for kids or prudes.

The music and lyrics are by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon”), and the book is by Jeff Whitty. The songs include “It

Sucks To Be Me,” “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist,” “The Internet Is For Porn,” “I Wish I Could Go Back To College” and more. Originally intended to be a TV show, “Avenue Q” began off-Broadway where it received rave reviews.

This prompted the move to Broadway in 2003, where it ran for 2,556 performances.

Michael Fauss is the musical director, and Penny Leto is the choreographer.

The entire 2017 cast has returned, including: Brian Hall (“Xanadu” and “Spamalot”); Kristen Michelle (“The Drowsy Chaperone” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”); Susannah Wells (“Noises Off” and “The Producers”); Justin Ahearn (“Leading Ladies” and “Spelling Bee”); Jeremy Zoma (the recent hit “Hand To God” and “Forever Plaid”) and Juanita B. Green and Lora Nicolas.

The orchestra includes Fauss (conductor/ keyboards), Nancy 3 Hoffman (keyboards), Celicia Slafter (reeds), Gary Rivenson and Joe Dallas (bass) and Daniel Carter (percussion).

Michael Boyer will create the onstage neighborhood of “Avenue Q.” Lighting designer is Kim Hanson. Carmen Rodriguez is the costumer. Trish Manley acts as stage manager.

Hurricane Irma claimed about 1,000 mobile homes, the Keys’ previous answer to affordable housing. Many single-family, ground level homes weren’t spared either. With those wiped out, the Keys are struggling to find the right dwelling to replace those — some combination of affordable, “tiny,” and hurricaneresistant. This is the second in a series of features about what’s available.

Homes come with a complete HVAC system including condenser and ducts. Most Keys homeowners opt for Hardie cement board siding, metal roofs and impact windows and doors.

The homes are sold only to builders, who prepare the lot, foundation and finish the home to the owner’s specifications. According to the manufacturer, modular housing is comparable to site-built costs but offers more efficiency in savings.

T

onight, Thursday, March 22, several community members will be honored at Samuel’s House’s 2018 Women of Integrity/Men of Valor ceremony at Beachside Marriott in Key West. This year’s honorees not only step up in the community, but also are recognized for their postIrma recovery efforts. The event is an annual fundraiser for Samuel’s House, the nonprofit which provides housing and supportive services to homeless women and intact families to aid them in becoming self-sufficient.

The honorees: BILL BECKER Bill Becker, news director at US1 Radio, is being honored for his role in providing local news updates with his fellow staffers after Hurricane Irma. Becker credits the station’s incredible team commitment, stellar facilities and sturdy generator (nicknamed Zippy) for making it possible to stay on the air. In addition, he’s co-founder of one of the Lower Keys’ signature events: the annual Underwater Music Festival that spotlights coral reef preservation.

SEAN BRANDENBURG Key West Police Captain Sean Brandenburg has been an officer since 1990, joining the Key West Police Department in 2002. He received the Life Saving Medal on two separate occasions in his time with the Key West Police Department.

KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 22, 2018 CHERYL CATES Cheryl Cates, a real estate agent, is service driven and has given her time to countless boards and committees, too many to list. As Mayor Craig Cates’ “first lady,” she has been dedicated to helping Key West thrive.

JULIE ANN FLOYD Julie Ann Floyd, M.D., has been in practice in Key West since 2005 and owns Tropical Wellness. As a rehabilitation specialist, her niche is the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal problems, spine disorders, sports injuries, work and auto injuries. Her unique abilities to blend standard Western medicine training with Eastern medicine training and acupuncture offer many patients an integrative and functional medical approach.

THOMAS GRAY “I was born into a very ordinary life and am no one extraordinary,” said Thomas Gray, who is being honored for his work at for 14 years at Florida Keys Outreach Coalition. After Hurricane Irma, he coordinated recovery efforts for the outreach’s facilities from massive tree damage that had much of the facility blocked.

JOHN NORRIS Dr. John Norris III, MD, is an internal medicine specialist and has been practicing for 28 years. He has also been highly involved with research of genetically modified mosquitoes and their effects on antibiotics in humans.

MAURA AND DANNY HUGHES Maura and Danny moved to Key West in 2013 and bought Two Friends Patio Restaurant. Neither had any restaurant experience, but have turned it into a bustling hangout allowing them to employ 63 people. The two are community-minded and involved with Samuel’s House, KeysStrong, the Star of the Sea Mission, Kids Come First, and The Luci Fund.

JOHN TROVATO John Trovato was appointed in April 2017 as the new managing director of the two Waldorf Astoria Resorts in Key West, the historic Casa Marina Resort and The Reach Resort. In the days following the hurricane, Casa Marina provided more than 6,000 meals to its team members, police and first responders. Trovato and the Waldorf team organized several hurricane recovery clean-up events, including helping All Hands Volunteers in the recovery efforts on Big Pine Key.

PHYLLIS MICHAELIS Phyllis Michaelis started volunteering at KAIR in 2009. What began as a one day a week occurrence turned into an everyday happening, sometimes volunteering as many as 80 hours a week. She says volunteering with KAIR brought great joy to her life and has allowed her to be blessed by working with KAIR’s clients.

SKIPPER KRIPITZ Reflecting on many, many decades of spearheading and participating in charitable events, his musical involvement in the community is immeasurable. He has been involved with hundreds of fundraisers and charity events in the Keys.

TERRI HILL Rev. Terri Hill, the pastor at Key West United Methodist Church, opened the church as a distribution center serving more than 3,000 people with food, water, cleaning supplies, building supplies, diapers, batteries and more after Hurricane Irma. The church continues to host volunteer groups in its bunkroom.

CLIF TAYLOR Clif Taylor’s hospitality career began as a front desk agent in 1983 and he progressed through several positions, including hotel controller and property general manager before moving to Key West in 2005. In 2009, he was named Key West General Manager of the Year by the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West for his work at Spottswood Companies.

ROBERT SPOTTSWOOD Robert A. Spottswood’s companies include Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel, Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, Holiday Inn Express and Suites Marathon, and asset management for the LaConcha Hotel. The hotels were hubs before, during and after the hurricane.

Spottswood is also very involved with the community, as a part of too many organizations to list.

THE COHENS Brothers Brad and Seth Cohen called Elmira Leto of Samuel’s House and asked how they could help with serving the residents of Monroe County after the hurricane and ended up serving the community 28,800 meals. They will be cooking for residents of Big Pine Key on May 11 and will be bringing 350 volunteers in partnership with keysstrong.org.

he third race of the 2018 Schooner Wharf Bar Wrecker’s Cup Race Series is set for Sunday, March 25. This all-in-fun race series recalls the tradition of the wreckers in the Key West of the 1800s, who would race to shipwrecks, the first to arrive being responsible for saving passengers and crew but also entitled to salvage cargo.

For the race, which is seven miles from Key West Harbor to Sand Key, vessels compete in different classes: classic, schooner, multihull, monohull over 40 feet, monohull 30 to 39 feet, monohull under 29 feet. First, second and third places will be awarded in each division, with trophies, Pusser’s Rum, Schooner Wharf bar tabs and Wrecker T-shirts as prizes.

Visiting yachters are invited to join in, meet fellow sailors, enjoy a fun day on the water and celebrate afterward.

A captains’ meeting is held Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m. on the Schooner Wharf’s Sail Loft with complimentary Pusser’s Rum Punch and hors d’oeuvres from the Schooner Wharf Galley.

All participating vessels will be eligible for up to four BBQ dinners for captain and crew at the awards ceremony. The race is video recorded and displayed during the awards party! Entry fee for each vessel is $30.
