he Key West crud, the New Year flu, kennel cough (the people version) – there are a variety of Keys diseases that float around during the winter months. Whether we blame our toddlers for spreading the Norwalk virus faster than on cruise ships, or tourists for coughing on our chickens, some of us get sick and some of us just don’t. Then the whole flu shot debate: some swear by it and some, meh, think it’s useless. So we asked locals…

Did you get a flu shot this year?

“I didn’t get a flu shot because I’ve known other people who’ve had life-threatening responses to it,” said Brian Toomey. “But then my contact with tourists is limited.”

“Every year from a nice girl at the pharmacy,” said Tom Higgins.

“And I don’t get sick.”

“I don’t get the flu shot; I’m afraid it will make me sick,” said Adam Marengo. “Then I would have to stay home and annoy my wife.”

“No, I don’t get it. Instead I take Emergen C, allergy pills, 3 Airborne gummies a day and a little Jameson whiskey,” said Becky Evans.

“I don’t because I drink liquor,” said Bill Gergosky. “That’s all I need.”

NEXT GENERATION OF AFFORDABLE SENIOR HOUSING POINCIANA GARDENS TO OPEN IN MAY

F

or more than 15 years, one of the biggest topics of discussion in Key West has been the future of senior living. In 2014, the City Commission asked the Housing Authority to determine the feasibility of constructing a senior housing solution that offered needed services to its residents. After several years of development and construction, the community is about to have its hopes realized. This spring, the brand new Frank P. Toppino Poinciana Gardens Senior Living Community will open on Duck Avenue, offering both supported independent living and licensed assisted living. For

many aging community members, the new senior apartment complex will provide not just a solution to the lack of housing but also will offer quality of life unmatched for the elderly residents in Key West.

Poinciana Gardens is owned by the Housing Authority and was created by a special construction loan provided by Centennial Bank, and was not built with taxpayer dollars. Due to this special low-interest financing, and because the project is being operated as a non-profit, Poinciana Gardens can offer cost-effective rents to the elderly population of Key West.

The Housing Authority and the project developer, Key West Senior Development LLC, selected American House Senior Living, one of the top senior housing providers in the United States, to manage the community.

Jany Coyle, executive director as well as a trained nurse and passionate advocate for seniors, said “This is not a cookie cutter operation. It’s a job that doesn’t feel like work.” She is excited to be part of the next stage of senior living in Key West. “It’s gratifying to help people enjoy a better life.”

The building itself was built to the highest standard of full assisted living.

Of the 106 units, initially the first two floors are for supported independent living and the third floor is for licensed assisted living. Seniors from age 50 and up can choose from shared or private studios, one bedroom, or two bedrooms. In order to assure that the residents’ needs are fully met, the monthly cost includes three meals a day, weekly laundry, housekeeping, activities, and care staff for the supported independent living residents, plus nurse-provided assisted living services.

In addition, the facility has a physical therapy room, visiting doctor office and common areas, several lounges, quiet reading areas, and even a community garden. The facility will offer scheduled transportation to downtown areas and grocery stores. Lastly, the dining experience will have a full-time chef and restaurant-style indoor and outdoor dining. The staff will include a full-time activities director, with a broad range of daily activities both in the facility and in the community.

ELECTION RESULTS

H

ere are the results of elections held March 13 in Key West and Key Colony Beach.

Key West: • Raise height limit for affordable workforce housing on 2.62 acres of city land on College Road: Passes, 1,383 to 986 (58.38% to 41.62%).

Key Colony Beach: • City Commission terms changed from two to four years, elections held in November: Passes, 100 to 43 (69.93% to 30.07%).

• Election tie to be resolved by lottery rather than runoff: Passes, 108 to 35 (75.52% to 24.48%).

EPA OPENS COMMENT PERIOD FOR PERMIT ON OXITEC MOSQUITO

O

n March 9, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published in the Federal Register a notice of receipt of an application for an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) for the release of Oxitec’s Aedes aegypti FriendlyTM mosquitoes in Monroe County, Florida. This marks the opening of the 30-day public comment period, after which the EPA will review the comments as part of their evaluation of Oxitec’s Friendly Mosquito EUP project.

The purpose of Oxitec’s proposed pilot project is to determine the efficacy of Oxitec’s Aedes aegypti FriendlyTM mosquitoes as a control method of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Monroe County.

“The Aedes aegypti is a very difficult mosquito to control,” said Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) Executive Director Andrea Leal. “We are constantly looking at new technologies to combat this mosquito and we look forward to the EPA’s review of the Oxitec mosquito.”

FEMA TRAILER USE MAY GO BEYOND JUNE 1

H

urricane Irma survivors who meet recertification requirements for housing assistance – those who can demonstrate that they are actively working toward a permanent housing plan – may remain in FEMA travel trailers beyond the original date of June 1, the start of hurricane season.

FEMA officials have told Monroe County that the goal is for as many Florida Keys survivors as possible to find more permanent housing by June 1, but that some survivors may still be eligible for direct housing after that date.

To remain eligible, survivors must continue to work on a permanent housing plan. FEMA makes determinations about continued eligibility for direct housing on a monthly basis by speaking with survivors about their progress.

About 195 Monroe County households are staying in temporary travel trailers provided by FEMA, and 20 households have already moved out of temporary trailers. About 26 households are staying in a rental property that FEMA has leased, and two households have moved out.

FEMA’s temporary hotel program in Monroe County ended on March 10. A reported 114 households, a total of about 224 people, were still participating in the hotel program.

Those without housing may call 2-1-1 which may be able to assist with unmet needs. Monroe County Social Services and other county staff have been working with Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters on case management to help people transition into housing.

LOOKING BACK, FORWARD CATES REFLECTS ON MAYOR’S JOB, UPCOMING ELECTION

H

e doesn’t like public speaking. And that sounds kind of funny coming from a man who has been at the helm of Key West for almost a decade. Mayor Craig Cates will be stepping down due to term limits and relinquishing a position he is deeply proud and humbled to have held. Mayor since 2009, Cates is leaving some big shoes to fill and he definitely wants to help the public make the right choice.

Obviously, he knows the job pretty well and has some thoughts on the next election.

Thoughts on the next mayoral race?

I am very concerned with the next race and will continue to be involved. There are a couple of good candidates, people who bring people together and can be a good promoter of the city. But what I have learned about the public is they are not as informed as they should be and nowadays my goal is to get as much information out as possible so they can make the right choice. (At this time, the mayor isn’t publicly backing one candidate.)

How much time have you spent on the job? (Laughing) I think I make 40 cents per hour? Let’s put it this way, it’s special to spend a night at home with Cheryl, who loves to cook, but rare. The next mayor should be prepared for a lot of events, but Cheryl and I are social and have loved getting along with everybody. (The mayor has been ever-present, from small grass-roots events to large prestigious galas; he saw being a part of the community as an honor, not just a duty.)

Looking back, why did you run for mayor? I was retired and a little crazy. I kept hearing Key West was not what it used to be and I didn’t want to lose why people come to live and work here. So I ran on fiscal responsibility, making the town cleaner and safer and preserving the quality of our community.

The biggest lesson you would pass on? Realize changing the direction the city is going in doesn’t happen overnight. When I came on, the government was too big. It was painful to cut back but we did. I wanted to keep our taxes low and government in check. It’s been a step by step process. And when the government is doing well, naturally, it wants to expand again. But we have to keep pushing back, making hard choices and be responsible.

Being the mayor of Key West can mean the national stage, especially after a hurricane; how was it? (Cates was on CNN with Anderson Cooper, MSNBC, and other national networks post Irma.) Being live makes you nervous; remember, I’m just a mechanic. But I was so proud of Key West and its recovery, I wanted people to know.

There was one rude network and I refused a second interview with them because I wanted the message to be positive and they didn’t.

What did you learn about the role?

As mayor, you are the visionary for the city; a district didn’t elect you, an entire city did, so there are a lot of opinions and voices.

As a mechanic, I had learned to be a good listener. I have to hear what’s wrong in order to put it all together. But the job got easier over time when more people begin to support and trust you.

What was your hardest lesson? I came in naive with a passion to make things better. I didn’t realize it would be so hard to get a consensus to move things forward. I think the greatest thing I have learned is patience.

I thought my three daughters had prepared me, but there was still more to learn with this job.

What are some of your proudest achievements? We saved the money for the new Truman Waterfront, and it was hard to do, around $20 million dollars, but in the end, it didn’t cause us any debt. Also, the Veteran’s Memorial; I am pretty proud we can honor so many who have served from our community. And the new City Hall; there were a lot of votes against its location but I got the public on board and here we are today.

Advice for voters? Fact check as much as you can; don’t believe everything just because a candidate says it. Do your research, listen at candidate forums, make sure the candidate’s vision aligns with your vision of Key West because they will be setting the direction of the city. And who, lastly, protects our quality of life here. Also vote for people who have been around a long time, so when problems come up, they can say, “I remember when.” We don’t want to lose the reasons why we live here.

KEY WEST’S BEST TOP CONCERTS TO HIT THE ROCK

M

aybe it all started with Jimmy Buffett. After all, who can deny his influence on Key West songwriting and artistry?

Yet long after Key West’s most recognized music royalty transformed into a national deity, the island that shaped a Trop Rock God has witnessed a musical renaissance in the past decade — boasting more national acts and large-scale concerts than ever before.

Before we digress, make no mistake: the island’s melodic renaissance began with local musicians. Before the amphitheater and other venues offered seating for national acts, it was local talent that did, and continues to, brand Key West with a musical note much like Austin, Texas in the early 2000s.

Ralph De Palma, who stamped his place in Key West music lore by photographing notable local and national talents around the island, claimed “if Nashville is ‘Music City,’ then Key West is definitely ‘Music Land.’” And as more and more acts land on the rock, here is a look back at some of the notable contributors and performances during the last five years of Key West’s music movement.

11. Jake Owen | 2016 | Songwriters Festival | Duval Street main stage: Charlie Bauer and his team have heavily contributed to the influx of household musical names in Key West. Partnering with BMI, Bauer and company have made the Key West Songwriters Festival a “can’t miss” week of live music. Names like Rhett Akins, Old Dominion and Chris Young have all performed, but one of our favorites was Jake Owen in ’16.

10. G Love (& Special Sauce) | 2015 | Coast Billy Kearins of Coast Productions has turned the rustic jam sessions of a Stock Island boat yard into one of the trendiest spots for big names in music, including the likes of Langhorne Slim, Mason Jennings, Yonder Mountain String Band, Todd Snider and Rorey Carroll. But it was G Love (& Special Sauce) in October of 2015 that put Coast on the national map … not to mention the show sold out in 24 hours.

9. Turnpike Troubadours | 2018 | Mile 0 Fest | Key West Amphitheater The Mile 0 Fest was hatched in 2018 and the festival’s early success over the course of three days already indicates bigger things to come. This year, names like Cody Jinks, Pate Green and Wade

Bowen tore up the stage. But Turnpike Troubadours threw down on a memorable Saturday night, proving that up-andcoming bands can, and will, be stopping in Key West. (Note: Turnpike Troubadours will be headlining Red Rocks in a few short months.)

8. Michael McDonald | 2018 | Sunset Green Event Lawn at 24 North Another recent event space has already contributed to a big concert in 2018.

The Keys Collection and 24 North Hotel (Keys Collection) partnered with Ramshead Group to bring Michael McDonald to an open air lawn that provided an incredible sound and vibe. The result was an amazing performance by the legendary Michael McDonald.

7. Vince Gill & Lyle Lovett | 2016 | Tennessee Williams Theatre The Tennessee Williams Theatre has quietly showcased some of Key West’s biggest shows over the past several years.

Spearheaded by Dr. Frank Wood, names like Chubby Checker, Art Garfunkel, Wynonna Judd, Clint Black, The Temptations and Four Tops have performed. But one of the coolest moments was back in 2016 when Vince Gill and Lyle Lovett took the stage.

6. Kenny Chesney | 2013 | Hogs Breath Saloon If you live in Key West, odds are you’ve bumped into one of music’s biggest names. Kenny Chesney is no stranger to the town and he’s put on some of the most memorable shows in recent memory. Who can forget recent performances at Sloppy Joe’s where everyone from Eric Church to Peyton Manning joined him on stage? But it was his legendary show at Hog’s Breath that we love. And you can still watch the “No Shoes” documentary today.

5. Johnny Swim | 2016 | Key West Theater You can’t really just pick one show from the Key West Theater, which has been bussing in talent to Key West for the past five years. Rams Head Group and Kelly Norman have been booking acts such as Here Come the Mummies, Big Head Todd, Marc Broussard, Citizen Cope, Jake Shimabukuro, Edwin McCain and Dina Carter. But it was Johnny Swim that electrified the house back in early ’16.

4. The Revivalists | 2014 | Sunset Pier & Ocean Key Resort

Turn on the television and you’ll likely hear or see David Shaw and the Revivalists on commercials or interviews. But Rodger Levering at Ocean Key, along with John Vagnoni and the Green Parrot, caught on to the Revivalists long before the mainstream. 3. Green Parrot Bar When it comes to music pioneers in Key West, John Vagnoni at the Green Parrot Bar has been discovering and showcasing premier music acts for years. The town should be indebted for his mark on Key West’s music scene and, to show our respect, we simply couldn’t list just one performance. Over the years, members of the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead and Blues Brothers have all performed on the Parrot stage. But up-and-coming acts like Bonerama, The Revivalists, Eric Lindell, Mia Borders, The California Honeydrops, The Marcus King Band, Honey Island Swamp Band and Wild Magnolias can be seen for the price of a beer and some damn good popcorn.

Huey Lewis and the News | 2015 | Keystock | Truman Annex When tracing Key West’s recent musical movement, one can look no further than Joe Cleghorn and his team at Lazy Lakes, which kick-started the Keystock concert series at Lazy Lakes RV park almost a decade ago. Not only do the shows donate funds to local veterans, they have also boasted bands like 3 Dog Night, The Doobie Brothers and Eric Burdon & The Animals. But it was 2015 when Cleghorn partnered up with Danny Hughes (Two Friends Patio) to bring Huey Lewis and the News to town. And it is that show that many still talk about today.

1. Jimmy Buffett | 2017 | Margaritaville Key West If you thought we would have a list without Jimmy Buffett, well, you’re insane.

Key West music is the house that Jimmy built and the holy grail of concerts is when the king of parrots and fins pops in for an impromptu show. And that’s exactly what happened in late December 2017 at his Margaritaville restaurant along Duval Street. The walls and outside street were packed and the performance quickly made waves (pun intended) across the country.

ccording to the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections, the deadline to declare a candidacy for the November 2018 election is still months away — June 22 at noon, to be specific. And, yet, the roster already looks pretty full. For example, there are 10 candidates seeking the mayor’s seat in Key West.

Several candidates are, so far, running unopposed. They are incumbents Monroe County Commissioner David Rice from Dist. 4, Monroe County School Board member Bobby Highsmith from Dist. 1, Key Largo Fire & Emergency Medical Board’s Kay Cullen in Seat 2, and Key West Commissioner Sam Kaufman from Dist. 2. Sue Woltanski seeks the Dist. 5 school board seat being vacated by Ron Martin. Gregory Davila is running for the Key West City Commission seat currently held by Richard Payne, who has told other news sources he will retire. Key West Utility Board members Steven Wells Sr. and Mona Clark are also running unopposed.

• There are also several challengers for the Key West Utility Board. Before Governor Rick Scott signed a law changing how the board is chosen, all five board members were elected from Key West, although Keys Energy Service’s area extends to the west end of 7 Mile Bridge. Now three members will be elected from Key West, and two from up the Keys. In the 2018 election, seats A, B and D are up for new four-year terms. Mona Clark and Stephen Wells Jr. are running for A and B, respectively, and both are incumbents on the board.

For seat D, which is newly available to candidates living outside of Key West, three have registered to run: Greg Daniels, Walter P. Drabinski and Beth Ramsay-Vickrey.

All of the races are non-partisan, except for the Monroe County Commission.

he first three Florida “Keys Cottages” are set to break ground at the end of the month in one of the hardest hit areas in Big Pine Key, the Avenues.

“We really wanted to see this vision through in the Keys,” said Marianne Cusato, designer and developer of Katrina Cottages, a type of FEMA-funded housing that popped up in Louisiana and Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.

The 760-square-foot, two-bedroom, onebathroom homes in the Keys project are in the permitting stages and set to break ground by the end of the month. Completion of the project is projected for June.

“The speed at which these are planned on going up is essential,” said Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent, who through nonprofits Florida Keys Hurricane Recovery Foundation and Ocean Reef Community Foundation is helping defray costs for the first

Still displaced six months post-Irma were 114 Monroe County households as of March 7, in FEMA transitional hotel housing that ended with a March 10 checkout date. Still in FEMA trailers were 195 households.

With homes built specifically to exceed Monroe County building codes, the Florida Keys Community Land Trust spearheaded the project to help with the affordable housing situation in the Keys.

A representative from the trust, Irina Woelfle, said the challenges in the Keys are unique. “I had no idea workforce was being bussed into the Keys from Homestead,” she said. “There’s nothing cheap about affordable housing.”

The trust, through private funding, bought nine properties with building right allocations on Big Pine Key and is under contract for seven more. The trust will offset costs keeping rent at 30 percent of the annual household income for workers like officers, servers, teachers and babysitters. “We are committed to making sure these stay affordable,” said Woelfle. Six properties have already been demolished for future “affordable” projects.

When asked about managing companies for the new homes, Woelfle wasn’t sure on the specifics.

With those wiped out, the Keys are struggling to find the right dwelling to replace those — some combination of affordable, “tiny,” and hurricane-resistant. This is the first in a series of features about what’s available.

The homes can be purchased as a shell or owner/builders or turnkey ready for occupancy.

Currently, NexGen ships all over the world and can deliver the home on a semi-truck or cargo container to almost any location. (In the Keys, Sherwood Construction is the local contact.) Elevated slab foundations will vary, but average $24 per square foot in Florida.

ast year he blew everyone away; Key West audiences said it was the funniest show of the year. Comedian Jim Breuer is back at the Key West Theater, Friday March 16 for two shows. His rise to fame started with “Saturday Night Live” back in the ’90s, his infamous “Goat Boy” and Joe Pesci impersonations eventually helped boost his status on Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time.” Then the movie “Half Baked” with Dave Chappelle, which is still popular today, cemented his cult following. He is still in the spotlight, appearing recently on CBS’s “Kevin Can Wait” and on stage as a musician with his longtime backing band, The Loud & Rowdy.

But Breuer is a family man, baseball lover, a down-to-earth kind of guy, who’s pleased to say he’s been “F-word free for 10 years and counting.”

He won’t talk politics but life, in a gut-wrenching, hilarious way. “My huge focus is, ‘listen, stop getting caught up in the hoopla, the news, politics and all that jazz,’” he says. “I’m here to say that life isn’t that horrendous. Can you still eat?

A

n examination of race, class, taste and politics also manages to bring humor along, as the Red Barn Theatre continues its 38th season with a three-week run of Karen Zacarias’s new play, “Native Gardens.”

The play, opening Tuesday, March 20, features veteran Key West actors Bob Bowersox, Luis Febo, Morgan Fraga and Rebecca Gleason. It is directed

by Murphy Davis.

Frank Butley (Bowersox) is a retired government employee now spending his days tending his ornate English garden, perennially hoping to win his Horticultural Society’s Best Garden Award – something he has never managed to do. His wife Virginia (Gleason), an engineer at Lockheed Martin, dutifully supports him. Their home in Georgetown is a showplace, with every blade of grass in place.

Enter young attorney Pablo Del Valle (Febo) and his very pregnant wife, Tania (Fraga), who buy the shabby fixer-upper next door. The two couples make friends across the gorgeous stretch of Frank’s flowers between their respective properties. Gifts of wine and chocolates are exchanged; good humor seems to be the order of the day.

But Pablo – in his efforts to make partner at his law firm – has invited the entire firm to his house for a barbecue on the weekend. He suggests removing an ugly metal fence separating the properties and putting up a new wood one. This is received happily by Frank and Virginia; Frank has viewed the ugly, old fence as one of the reasons he’s not been able to win Best Garden.

Then all goes awry. A survey shows that years ago, the fence was installed two feet from the property line, meaning that Frank’s beloved garden is actually on the del Valles’ land, not his own. And Pablo wants it back. The resulting standoff between the couples escalates with every scene, leading the couples to cross lines they normally wouldn’t even consider.

Zacarias’ play addresses questions of sexism, classism, ageism and racism without preaching. The laughs flow freely while the work still touches on the issues of old versus new, the entitled versus the deserving, the privileged versus those struggling for achievement.

“Native Gardens” runs Tuesdays through Saturdays through April 7. All curtains are at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at redbarntheatre.com/tickets or by calling 305-296-9911.

LEGISLATIVE WRAP Good news for the Florida Keys

• The legislature approved $5.9 million in funding for a new Emergency Operations Center. During Hurricane Irma, essential personnel evacuated to Ocean Reef for safety as the current facility is not sufficiently storm-hardened.

Officials say the new EOC will be placed at the Marathon airport.

• Statewide, the Florida Forever program received a $100 million boost. The Keys will receive $5 million for land acquisition, plus $5 million in Stewardship Act funds for water projects such as canal restoration. Last year, Florida Forever received no new funding.

• Florida Keys Community College will receive $5 million for classroom facilities and renovations and also hurricane impact gap funding to cover lost enrollment after Hurricane Irma.

• Several Keys programs also received funding. The free mobile pumpout for vessels was funded at $227,000.

Florida Keys AHEC received $250,000 to continue to run school clinics. The Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens (MARC) received $100,000 for job training. And MOTE Marine received $500,000 for coral restoration.

arlier this week, the 2018 Florida legislative session came to an end. The legislature approved an $88.7 billion budget that includes many initiatives for the Florida Keys, including investing in nearshore waters and even funding for a new, Category 5-rated Emergency Operations Center. Perhaps the most important is $15 million in funding for affordable housing.

“Despite having to cut the state budget to cover the safe schools act, we were still able to secure a sizable amount of resources for our Hurricane Irma recovery efforts and important community needs like the Stewardship Act,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein.

• The Florida Keys have been awarded $15 million for affordable housing through the state’s SAIL (State Apartment Incentive Loan) program.

It provides low-interest loans on a competitive bid to affordable-housing developers each year. In the Keys, developers may designate all the units in the development for residents with annual household incomes below 120 percent of the state or local median income, whichever is higher.

State Rep. Holly Raschein also sponsored two bills that passed. HB283 grants Lower Keys Medical Center an exception in order to provide certain cardiac procedures.

Normally, hospitals must meet volume requirements that would preclude the Keys rural hospital from participating.

HB1163 amends the structure of the Monroe County Land Authority. In addition to being able to purchase land, it now has the ability to develop projects.

Also, the challenge to home rule died during session. If passed, it could have preempted local vacation rental laws, making it possible for nightly rentals in residential neighborhoods. It never made it to the second committee in the House and also stalled in the Senate.

The last three weeks of the nine-week session were devoted to the response to the Parkland school shooting that claimed 17 lives at a Broward County high school. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act raises the age requirement to purchase some guns to 21, but does not ban AR-15s. The bill would provide additional funding for SROs, who currently are only onsite at about half of Florida schools, and has provisions permitting school staff to carry guns on the job after extensive training.

The majority of the bill deals with school safety, mental health and coordination among agencies.

It’s also possible that Floridians may never have to participate in switching the clocks twice a year. If Governor Rick Scott signs it into law, and Congress approves, Daylight Saving Time will be permanent in Florida.

Scott has 30 days to decide whether to veto items once a bill lands on his desk.

EXHIBIT CELEBRATES CAPTAIN OUTRAGEOUS

he Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the acclaimed late Key West artist Captain Outrageous in “That’s Outrageous!,” a retrospective featuring more than 40 works that explores his pop art style across several different mediums.

The exhibit opens Friday, April 13, with a special reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Bryan Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.

Spanning nearly four decades in Key West, Captain Outrageous left his indelible mark on the island with both his colorful artwork and personality. He made the world his canvas and painted thousands of

items – bicycles, scooters, furniture, clothing, mannequins, cars, camper vans, sinks, musical instruments, telephones, and even toilet seats – with a pop art design style à la Roy Lichtenstein, but with a flair and humor decidedly his own. A true Key West character, he embodied the spirit of the island, and his creations are celebrated and collected by many.
