WHERE WE STAND The state of the Keys after Irma

A

s the six-month mark approaches since Hurricane Irma struck the Florida Keys on Sept. 10, 2017, the Federal Emergency Management Administration is ending some programs and continuing others for survivors of the Category 4 hurricane in Monroe County. Here is the latest update of those programs and assistance/insurance claims provided to residents of the County.

Transitional Sheltering Assistance FEMA’s temporary hotel program in Monroe County ends on Saturday, March 10, with a hotel checkout on Sunday, March 11. A reported 114 households, a total of about 224 people, are currently participating in the temporary hotel program. Those without housing may call 2-1-1 which may be able to assist with unmet needs. Monroe County Social Services and other county staff has been working with Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADs) on case management to help people transition into housing. More information is available on the county website at www.monroecounty-fl.gov (click on Hurricane Irma recovery).

Direct housing in Monroe County Members of about 195 Monroe County households are staying in temporary travel trailers provided by FEMA, and 20 households have already moved out of temporary trailers. About 26 households are staying in a rental property that FEMA has leased, and two households have moved out.

Individual assistance FEMA has provided about $62 million in grants to homeowners and renters in Monroe County for temporary rental assistance, basic home repairs and other needs not covered by insurance.

Federal flood insurance About $112 million in flood insurance claims have been paid for Monroe County policyholders, according to preliminary FEMA data.

Private insurance About 29,000 private insurance claims have been filed by Monroe County policyholders, according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, which reports an estimated $8 billion in insured losses statewide.

SBA Disaster Loans The Small Business Administration has approved $171 million in disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses in Monroe County, including $109 million in home loans and $61 million in business loans.

he 5K, 10K and 15K challenge brought more than 400 runners to Sombrero Beach on Saturday morning. “For one thing the weather was perfection for running,” said Marge Roberts, of KAIR, the nonprofit that benefitted from the run’s fund-raising. “It seemed like a really fun day and beautiful way to celebrate the beach after the storm.”

Cleaning existing steel. This is step one of the project, working east to west. It’s sandblasted, primed and then coated with zinc. Sandblasting off the rust reveals the integrity of the piece.

Suspended Temporary Work Platform. There are actually two levels to this platform.

The lower level is a full walking surface; the second is a mesh net to bring workers closer to the steel beams.

Workers. There are currently 44 employees making repairs to the bridge.

They work five or six days a week and are employed either by the engineering company WSP, the contractor Saffo Contractors Inc., or the subcontractor Cekra Inc.

Replacing the steel. The majority of the steel is salvageable, according to the senior project manager.

So far, only about 25 percent of it has had to be replaced. This is the second most common repair being performed.

Concrete repairs. The third most common repair is fixing spalling and cracks. Using a form (that looks a bit like a metal cage), large pieces of concrete are removed and then replaced with high-quality materials. Cracks are repaired by injecting epoxy.

e’re two years in. The Old Seven Mile Bridge closed to pedestrians in July 2016 and there’s roughly another four years until it will reopen; insiders say they are looking at early 2022. The entire project is expected to cost $77 million, to be split three ways — the state Department of Transportation pays 75 percent ($58 million), the county funds 18 percent ($14 million) and Marathon agrees to shoulder 7 percent ($5 million).

But what, exactly, is going on out there? The old span is littered with equipment and supplies and busy workers, glimpsed only for a second as cars speed across the new Seven Mile Bridge.

“The project is very, very clean,” said Pom Chakkaphak, the senior project engineer employed by WSP. Protecting the Keys’ unique environment is priority one, he said. The second is the safety of workers and non-workers and the third is site security. It takes a small act from a minor deity to get out there.

The initial plan calls for the state DOT to drop more than $32 million on initial repairs with the county chipping in $2.7 million. Over the next 30 years, the county will be responsible for a $207,000 annual maintenance bill in addition to setting aside another $5 million that will cover half of the 30-year paint job the county is splitting with Marathon. The bridge is owned by FDOT. The Old Seven Mile Bridge was decommissioned in 1982 and closed to auto traffic in 2008. Pigeon Key, the five-acre island in the middle of the bridge — or at the end of the old span — is still open to the public. Some of the buildings remain from Pigeon Key’s incarnation as a work camp for the Florida East Coast Railway. The buildings are used today for housing for educational groups as well as administrative offices of the non-profit Pigeon Key Foundation.

To visit the historic island run by the Pigeon Key Foundation, buy a ferry ticket from the Hyatt Faro Blanco Resort, 2010 Overseas Highway in Marathon or call 305-743-5999. Tours are at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. The ferry is the only way to visit one of, if not the, most important historical sites in the Middle Keys. As far as the very popular pastime of walking the old bridge, well, that’s going to have to wait for a little while.

Anchored a few hundred yards off the bridge is the safety boat. It’s the captain’s job to pull anyone out of the drink who missteps. That hasn’t happened yet.

SIMPLE SOLUTION? Locals talk about traps to stop the lionfish invasion SARA MATTHIS sara@keysweekly.com

L

ionfish are the scourge of the Florida Keys seas. Since the early 2000s, they’ve been invading local waters, devouring everything in sight. More than 120 different prey fish have been found in the bellies of the beast, and they can eat other fish that are as big as half their size. Snapper, grouper, the ornamental parrotfish and even baby lobster are no match for this venomous (not poisonous!) fish, found in abundance in the Florida Keys.

Even more terrifying, a female lionfish can lay 5 million eggs in one year. Anecdotal and scientific evidence is piling up — this problem is getting much worse, very fast.

It’s legal to net them, even spear them where it’s allowed. On a great day, local spearo Rachel Bowman (see page 36) says she can pull up 80 to 100 pounds of lionfish.

Using a scuba tank and pole spear in depths of 100 to 180 feet, she loads them into a device called a ZooKeeper and hauls them to the surface. To do so, she faces the limits of weather, available crew, and how much diving her body can physically handle.

But the simplest, most effective method for removing lionfish is to catch them in existing lobster and stone crab traps. Commercial fishermen are allowed to keep every single lionfish — called bycatch — no matter the size, and sell it … but ONLY when the traps are allowed to be in the water. For example, commercial lobster fishermen aren’t allowed to have traps in the water for four months — from April to the end of July.

“I have caught up to 1,000 pounds of lionfish in one day,” said commercial fisherman Richie Stiglitz of the Middle Keys. He runs the “Get Used To It” and fishes 5,000 lobster traps with his crew.

He said the lionfish bycatch only appears in the traps in deeper waters, more than 100 feet. And while he can sell the lionfish bycatch for about $6 a pound — and buyers including local restaurants and Whole Foods are eager to have as much of the delicious fish as they can get their hands on — that’s less than the $10 a pound he earns for lobster.

And you can’t have both.

“A lionfish in the trap means no lobster. They don’t mix,” said Stiglitz.

Science backs up his statement. In a 2013 paper — “Interactions between the Caribbean spiny lobster and invasive lionfish; who displaces who?” — re-

searchers found that when “lionfish were present in traps, the density of lobster was lower … resulting in large negative socioeconomic consequences.” One of the authors was Reef Environmental Education Foundation’s Lad Adkins of Key Largo.

But fish traps are extremely unwelcome in conservationist circles. They were outlawed in the Keys 20 years ago.

“Fish traps have a very long, sordid history. People don’t like a fish trap. I get it, having grown up in North Carolina and over-extending a resource,” said Bowman. “But wouldn’t it be great if we could get a pilot program in the Keys, and allow commercial fishermen to fish those lobster traps out of season? They are not afraid of lionfish. They’ve got the gear and the traps and boats. Let them do it.

We already trust them with a commercial license.”

Across the board, organizations and agencies are very concerned about the lionfish invasion; one group in Pensacola has even invented a “lionfish killing drone.” For three years, the state Fish and Wildlife Commission has been conducting lionfish derbies, like a statewide tournament, with incentives ranging from cash to prizes to permission to harvest an extra lobster during miniseason. Outreach efforts range from schoolrooms to festivals and workshops.

And the state legislature has set aside $350,000 for scientific research projects

t’s the first thing you see – or is it? Ask most people about the entrance to the Original Marathon Seafood Festival (set for this weekend) and you might get some squinty-eyed attempt to picture the monolith of greenery in the shape of an arch. It might be a bit overlooked in the excitement to get inside.

And yet, it takes a little work and a lot of ingenuity to put the arch together. With the retirement of “Jamaican George” after 30 years at the helm of arch Tom Fago construction, a new guy is taking over the reins.

“I got my screw gun and a saw, and I’m not scared,” said Tom Fago, while cooking paninis in the galley of his 46-foot “Marlin Mujer,” docked at Keys Fisheries in Marathon. Fago said Jamaican George will be showing him how to intertwine the palm fronds through the chicken wire the day before the event.

Basically, Fago was voted into the position of arch master because he missed a crucial seafood festival organizational meeting, but said he couldn’t be more honored to help local commercial fishermen. “Georgie takes all the credit,” said Fago. George, whose last name is unknown and who apparently does not have a widely publicized telephone number, is moving.

UNDER THE ARCH

The arch is made with a pickup truck bed’s worth of freshly cut palm fronds donated by Dot Palm Landscaping in Marathon. Owner Gigi Harrison said they have been doing this for quite a long time, although she couldn’t pinpoint a date. “Typically, we don’t trim our trees all year and then only trim them for the festival,” she said. “But, because of the hurricane we will have to do a little outsourcing.

But come hell or high water, we will find enough to make sure the arch is there.”

The string of buoys may also be 30 years old, held in storage year after year.

Fago became involved with the festival four years ago. He owns the commercial stone crab boat “Ocean Horse.” His claim to fame stands as the “ice man” after Hurricane Irma, when he helped coordinate tractor trailer truckloads of ice in the aftermath.

“This town is built around fishing, and I love fishing,” he said. “We are a big family around here and this is a tightknit community.”

Fago was voted into the position of arch master because he missed a crucial seafood festival organizational meeting, but said he couldn’t be more honored to help local commercial fishermen.

Recently, one of the most challenging situations for any animal shelter unfolded for the small yet very capable staff at the Florida Keys SPCA’s Marathon campus late on Feb. 26. A total of 40 cats, contained to just a few dog kennels soaked with acidic urine and feces, arrived at the doors of the FKSPCA.

Hoarding situation lands 40 kitties at local shelter

D

etermined an extreme hoarding case — hardly routine in Marathon — a renter of a single room faced immediate eviction, and was clearly overwhelmed.

Mercifully, the cats were surrendered to the FKSPCA voluntarily by this “caretaker” without the necessity of law enforcement involvement. An animal control officer later conducted a follow-up welfare check; no more animals were discovered. No previous reports had been filed at the FKSPCA, which is contracted by Monroe County to provide animal control services from MM 70 to MM 0. Inside the city limits of Marathon, there is a maximum of four domestic animals allowed per household.

Although this situation begs several questions — how does animal hoarding happen on such a small island, in a shared apartment? Did neighbors or roommates see anything? Say anything? Smell anything? The point is not to denigrate the individual who collected these cats. Hoarding itself is a disease, a disconnect in a person’s rudimentary decision making and a complicated, delicate mental imbalance that can sometimes be triggered by a traumatic event. Nonetheless, this case likely would have worsened had it gone undetected any longer.

These were not feral, or wild, cats. They had been collected as strays or abandoned pets. Several hadn’t been “fixed,” and so naturally reproduced.

So, how does the handful of shelter staff and volunteers process the “intake and inventory” of 40 cats, tracking each animal’s identity, age, fertility, temperament and overall health?

I couldn’t imagine it until I witnessed it. It was a dynamic behind-the-scenes commitment of staff and trained community volunteers who immersed themselves in a massive (and filthy, smelly) yet delicate undertaking. And one that unfolded into late night and early morning hours until every animal was properly attended to. Each cat received a one-hour examination. The amount of syringes, gloves, medications, test kits and microchips dispensed, as well as soiled linens and towels needing disposal and replacement … well, it’s mind-boggling.

Each of the 40 cats was tested for diseases, received worm and flea medication, had antibiotics if necessary, was micro-

chipped and vaccinated, bathed, weighed, clipped, examined for gender and pregnancy and reproductive state, photographed, and had a digital medical file created.

With the aid of local veterinarian Dr. Kyle Maddox of Keys Animal Hospital, it was determined that of this large hoard of cats living in such cramped conditions, only five, a stunningly low percentage of the group, were deemed extremely medically ill or aggressive (unable to be handled at all), and therefore were required to be humanely euthanized.

Florida Keys SPCA is much more than just the place to pick up or drop off an animal. Equally important is what can we do as a community to be of effective help. Each individual’s involvement varies.

If you can’t adopt, foster. If you can’t foster, volunteer. If you can’t volunteer, donate. Fostering is an essential way to assist a shelter with a never-ending need to provide an animal a nurturing environment outside of the shelter. Volunteering is critical whether you are assisting shelter staff with daily or administrative tasks, your donated time is invaluable to our animals, staff and organization. Donating is by far one of the most critical ways that one can make a difference at our shelter — especially now, with 40 more cats to assimilate into the population. t cannot simply be called a shelter any more. The new Florida Keys Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (FKSPCA) building on College Road represents the next generation of animal care in the Florida Keys. The FKSPCA is not only changing buildings but changing the entire attitude and concept toward animal welfare and it is light years ahead of the services provided now.

Anyone who has been to the current shelter doesn’t deny the need for a new one. The mismatched buildings and dark kennels are often overcrowded and prone to flooding during storms. The spay/neuter area is an old trailer. Dogs have to be walked on busy College Road. Nothing about it is ideal or even pretty, thus making adoptions less appealing.

The entire expanse of the current facility is 20,000 square feet and it doesn’t work.

The new building isn’t much more than that, at 23,000 square feet, but will provide so much more. There will be 80 dog kennels, up from 40, housed in 5 different areas with the ability to separate the sick or the compromised. There are large windows into the kennel areas allowing the public better viewing. Animal control will have its own separate holding area to deal with difficult situations and there will be a bereavement/ euthanasia area as well. For the average 120 cats, it will go from two rooms to six, with a room just for kittens – and maybe even a kitten cam coming! There will be an exotic pet area, bunny area, food prep rooms, a proper spay/neuter clinic, medical and food storage areas, grooming, and even proper offices for staff. At present, the shelter goes through a washing machine every month without a commercial hook-up.

“We just felt like the animals needed better,” said Kim Wilkerson, a member of the FKSPCA’s board of directors.

All of this space will allow the society to implement more services such as behavioral therapy programs and increase veterinary services (even surgery) at lower costs. If the center’s 13 employees and more than 100 volunteers can provide better care and low cost amenities both before and after, then animal rehabilitation and adoption is more likely.

Also, the entire structure will be more user-friendly with a reception area, public conference area and waiting/adoption areas.

“We hope people will surrender their animals faster, knowing how much care we can offer,” said Jeff Johnson, capital campaign chair and FKSPCA president-elect. Johnson began the campaign for a new shelter 10 years ago and has tirelessly raised the $8 million in costs. “A lot of it came from out of state by people who just love animals.” Johnson is still campaigning for the last $300,000 for furniture and interior finishings.

don’t think there’s been news this big in Marathon since the announcement that the Old Seven Mile Bridge would be restored*. But Tito Puente Jr. will be playing the Original Marathon Seafood Festival on Saturday, March 10 at 5 p.m.

His father is, of course, the Mambo King, or simply “El Rey,” who passed away in 2000. The appeal of “Oye Como Va” or “Para Los Rumberos” crosses generations and borders.

Tito Jr. acknowledges the legacy and connection constantly; make no mistake, he’s following in his father’s footsteps.

What do you call this type of music? Well, it’s Latin Jazz, or salsa, but Mambo fits it the best.

Did you study music? I studied at college, but mainly I absorbed a whole generation of music by touring with my dad during the summer. I got to travel with a man that was a genius in that field. We toured the world and got to see how music is a bridge between cultures, even in the Far East.

How would you describe your stage presence? I have his quirkiness, and his smile, but I don’t know about the style of playing. He was very, very intricate in his drumming. But this is family-friendly, playful music. It’s joyous.

Can you tell us about the playlist for the seafood festival? It will definitely be his music from the 1950s to the 1970s. I also have a Grammy award-winning piano player joining me on stage and a special guest vocalist, Melina Almodovar, to play tribute to Celia Cruz, who was my godmother.

Tito Puente Jr. to play at Seafood Festival In the ’50s, your dad was the only nonCuban invited to a government sponsored Cuban music celebration. Are you an honorary Cuban? (Laughing) I guess so! I love the Cuban-Afro music; however, I am a Puerto Rican by descent and blood. I grew up in Harlem and moved to the suburbs of New York City later.

Do you live in Florida now? Yes, I moved here right after Hurricane Andrew and live in Broward County. When my dad was alive, he had a condo here too. We love coming to the Keys, and so did my dad. For all I know, he probably hung out with Hemingway.

Do you travel the world to play? Yes, in fact, I am headed to Milan, Italy next. We play the U.S., South America, and a lot of gigs in the Caribbean. This music resonates with people across the pond, too — Germany, France and England.

I play between 150 to 200 times a year. During the summer it’s music festivals; in the winter, it’s more nightclubs.

We love coming to the Keys, and so did my dad. For all I know, he probably hung out with Hemingway.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? Well, I have several Billboard hits, but I always get a thrill every time I perform. I like performing for heads of state, or for people in politics, or corporate functions. I like to call the suit, the CEO, up to jam with me on stage — take them out of their comfort zones. But there are so many aspects to my job, I appreciate different parts of each.

What was the highlight of your dad’s career? Probably the eight Grammy awards. But I would have to say it would be me. (Laughing.) He named me after himself, after all! It’s my intention to keep his music going and alive.

So, as a young man you were part of a metal band? Oh, I love heavy metal. In fact, right now I am trying to get tickets to the Journey and Def Leppard tour … if you know anybody.

Listen, I wasn’t a rebellious kid and I did spend a good seven years in a rock band, but I eventually gravitated toward the Latin music the more time I spent around my father.

You have one sister? How big is your family? Yes, her name is Audrey and she’s a meteorologist on a Fox channel in New York. She supports me by coming to my concerts, and I support her by watching her on TV. We like to say that she has always had her head in the clouds. I have five kids and two grandchildren.

What’s going to be the best part of this weekend? Bringing some fun after the hurricane. We love Key West and Marathon; we go to Duck Key and stay at Hawks Cay Resort, and visit Islamorada. Monroe County is so special. It’s time to rebuild and bring people together. My music and my late father’s music can do that.

Marathon Seafood Festival turns 42

W

hat began in 1976 in Marathon, as a way for local commercial fishermen to get together and celebrate the fruits of their labor, is now an event that attracts more than 20,000 people every year. The Original Marathon Seafood Festival, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, is needed this year “more than ever,” because of Hurricane Irma, said Daniel Samess, CEO of the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce.

The event – ranked as the top local festival by Best of Marathon voters – serves as an economic boon for local businesses, Samess said. It generates $75,000 in proceeds which find their way back to the pockets of local charitable organizations such as food banks, daycare centers, medical assistance, scholarships, youth sports, and many other worthwhile causes.

“With the help of many, we have rebuilt and repaired most properties that were damaged,” he said, “and I am proud to say about 95 percent or more of our local businesses are back up and running … in Marathon and the Florida Keys.”

The chamber and the Organized Fishermen of Florida, Marathon chapter, put on the festival. Funds raised during the weekend help pay for college for the children and grandchildren of fishermen and generate donations to Keys charities as well.

The two-day festival at the Marathon Community Park features more than 200 vendors selling gifts and art. There’s a boat show, as well as games and rides for the children.

And then there’s the seafood. More than a ton of lobster. Twelve hundred pounds of yellowtail and mahi. Smoked fish dip. Hundreds of oysters. And 150 kegs of beer to wash it all down with.

In the Keys, no festival is complete without live music, and the Marathon Seafood Festival has plenty.

If the gates are open, there will be music playing, from well-known local acts like Howard Livingston and John Bartus to Ricky Valido’s “modern” take on country, and Tito Puente Jr.’s following in his father’s Mambo footsteps, and the Saturday evening guitardriven rock of Monster.

eloved commercial fisherman and former Marathon resident Tommy Coppedge III passed away suddenly on March 2 at his home in Fort White, Florida. A longtime resident of the Middle Keys, he was also one of the founders of the Original Marathon Seafood Festival.

He is survived by his wife Trudie Coppedge; son Thomas Coppedge IV, wife Han and grandchild Eaton; and son Matthew Coppedge, wife Jennifer and stepgrandchild Michael.

Trudie said she has had an outpouring of support from his friends in the Keys.

“Kids who are now men, who worked at the stern of the boat, have been calling,” said Trudie. “He made friends easily. He wanted to talk about fishing and funny stories. He would say, ‘Sit down and have a beer.’ He would talk your ear off.”

Coppedge started fishing in the Keys by mating on other fishermen’s boats. He started his own operation on an 18-foot skiff with 100 traps. When he retired in 2013, he sold his 53-foot boat, the Pied Piper Too, and his 2,000 lobster and 5,000 crab traps.

His signature look — a bushy mustache and long mutton chops — was distinctive. Trudie recalled he shaved it off only once and was promptly instructed to grow it back.

In Fort White, he devoted his time to the 20-acre property and caring for three horses and seven donkeys.

“He was happy there,” said Trudie.

“The stress was gone and he didn’t have to worry about getting up at 3 a.m. in the morning to go fishing. He partied hard and lived good.”

Coppedge was also an avid longdistance motorcycle rider, or an “Iron Butt.” Some of his ashes will be taken on a buddy’s bike to be distributed in Alaska. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised all over as a Navy brat. Before becoming a fisherman he was a professional surfer right out of high school, and then joined the Army during the Vietnam conflict, but never deployed overseas.

Bennett Orr said, simply, “I have lost a great friend.”

The event is put on by the Key Colony Beach Community Association, which performs good works around the Middle Keys city all year long, ranging from free outdoor concerts to beautification.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am involved in the swim team, marching band, concert band, Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society.

They have all helped me expand beyond my school work while in high school.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Ms. Heyl and her advanced math classes have prepared me for life after high school by teaching me that with hard work and dedication, you can excel in even the most challenging subjects.

What advice would you give underclassmen? Don’t let the little things weigh you down; you won’t even remember then by the time you graduate.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend either the University of Florida or Valparaiso University.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? Tide pods and fidget spinners!

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I would like to have a pilot’s license, traveled out of the United States, and established myself in a job that I enjoy.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I do not think I will make the Keys my permanent home. Although I have grown to love it here over the past three years, I think I can find more opportunities on the mainland.

‘I GOT THIS’ Multi-tasking with Rachel Bowman

How many times have you been poked by a lionfish? 3,728,421 and ½ times. But, not once since I got a ZooKeeper. I have a couple of seriously fat-hand pictures.

Sell me the most popular thing at Kraken Up… Those stone crab claws sell themselves! They have the shortest commute of any seafood in town. I swear they crawl across the parking lot by themselves, they’re so fresh.

You stayed in Marathon for Hurricane Irma. What was the craziest thing that happened? The house next door is on fire, we’re standing in the Marathon Fire Department garage, and we are the only people there. Do we steal a fire truck? (Borrow it, really.) Is that illegal? Will we get in trouble?

We didn’t do it, which I regret. Who knows when I’ll get that chance again.

You were quite a hero to many in the aftermath… All of these people working at Aquarium Encounters are completely ignoring their own homes and property, and they’re just so focused on keeping these animals alive. (And also those at Dolphin Research Center and Bette from the Turtle Hospital, who was not only operating without power or water, but was also taking in new injured turtles.) I can’t fix a generator, but I can feed people and wash clothes in my bathtub. Sweating your ass off is a little easier if your underwear is clean.

One thing you wish you had after the hurricane? One of those washboard things they sell at Cracker Barrel.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating, who walks in and sits next to you?

My father. To hear his voice, to ask his advice, to hear his laugh … Stop reading this, and call your dad and tell him how much you love and appreciate him.

Favorite Keysy thing to do (other than lionfishing)? Working four jobs to be able to afford to live here. It doesn’t get any more Keysy than that.

Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? I want to be Carrie from “Sex in the City,” but I’m 100 percent Miranda.

What would your superpower be?

If I can’t have the ability to breathe underwater, then I’d like the ability to shoot cooked spaghetti out of my fingertips. (Editor’s Note: We think coffee just came out our nose.)

Favorite place in the Keys, not on the water? The Marathon library.

Read these: “The Travels of Jamie McPheeters,” “The Stand,” “ Lonesome Dove,” “The Longest Day,” and “The Winds of War.” If you could take one item on a deserted island? Sexy Boyfriend, for sure. He watches all of those survival shows, and he’d be terribly useful.

Rachel Bowman asked, while slinging sunset cocktails and conch ceviche three deep at Kracken Up, the upstairs bar at Keys Fisheries. Her 20 questions started with a “nope, totally get it, call me when you get off work.”

Known around town for her lionfish eradication advocacy (see page 10) she is also a server, bartender, errand girl, maid, chauffeur, boat captain, tournament organizer, donation wrangler, and the list keeps going.

Hailing from the same town as Michael Jordan — Wilmington, North Carolina — she said went to a benefit concert after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and ran into three ex-boyfriends that night. “On the drive home, I decided that life was too short to stay somewhere just because you’re comfortable,” she said. “My father spent time in the ’70s and ’80s fishing out of Holiday Isle, and I had grown up hearing stories about the Keys, so I threw everything I owned in my Honda, and drove south.”

Her claim to fame: I am in a large number of “Dawson’s Creek” episodes. (We especially liked spotting her in the Halloween one…)

Her lionfishing started in 2013, while running a boat for Adolphus Busch IV. “He dives exclusively for lionfish, and after watching him get out of the water with these exotic looking fish, I decided to give it a try,” she said. “I don’t know of anyone else in the Keys who was harvesting lionfish like he was, and Adolphus is one of the most conservation-minded people I know. My life would be a lot less interesting if it weren’t for the opportunities he’s presented me with.”

So, tell us more, Rach.

“I had grown up hearing stories about the Keys, so I threw everything I owned in my Honda, and drove south.”

The boat is sinking, you grab …

Chase Grimes. He’d make sure I’d get to shore safely (because his parents and StepMotherMargie would be really mad if he didn’t), and we’d probably laugh a lot and have kind of a good time.

Favorite guilty pleasure? ABC’s&123’s with meatballs. If I don’t have at least 10 cans in the house, I’m not comfortable.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you do/buy? A house, in Marathon, with lots of rooms for my hardworking friends, so they could stay in the Keys.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Idaho. There’s no humidity there, and my hair looks almost normal.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A Solid Gold dancer and a Ghostbuster.

o there I was, minding my own business, when I saw a Facebook friend’s post. This came from a couple that lived here until recently, and moved away to travel the world. For the sake of their privacy, I won’t mention their names. Their initials, however, are Linda and Tony Granaghan.

As a writer, I was just about beside myself reading the post. It was literally a laugh-out-loud moment, and I get very few of them via stuff online. For those of you who hated English class, you may want to skip this column and come back next week. For the rest of us, those who love the sheer complexity and expressiveness of the English language, this column may be right up your alley. Below are examples of what happens when grammar walks into a bar…

A dangling participle walks into a bar. Enjoying a cocktail and chatting with the bartender, the evening passes pleasantly.

A bar was walked into by the passive voice.

An oxymoron walked into a bar, and the silence was deafening.

Two quotation marks walk into a “bar.”

A malapropism walks into a bar, looking for all intensive purposes like a wolf in cheap clothing, muttering epitaphs and casting dispersions on his magnificent other, who takes him for granite.

Hyperbole totally rips into this insane bar and absolutely destroys everything.

A question mark walks into a bar?

A non sequitur walks into a bar.

In a strong wind, even turkeys can fly.

Papyrus and Comic Sans walk into a bar. The bartender says, “Get out — we don’t serve your type.”

A mixed metaphor walks into a bar, seeing the handwriting on the wall but hoping to nip it in the bud.

A comma splice walks into a bar, it has a drink and then leaves.

Three intransitive verbs walk into a bar. They sit. They converse. They depart.

A synonym strolls into a tavern.

At the end of the day, a cliché walks into a bar — fresh as a daisy, cute as a button, and sharp as a tack.

A run-on sentence walks into a bar finds a stool orders a drink and it starts flirting. With a cute little sentence fragment.

Falling slowly, softly falling, the chiasmus collapses to the bar floor.

A figure of speech literally walks into a bar and ends up getting figuratively hamJOHN mered.

A hyphenated word and a non-hyphenated word walk into a bar and the bartender nearly chokes on the irony.
