Solar power, or more specifically photovoltaic energy, has roots dating back to 1876. Through a series of research, William Grylls Adams and Richard Day discovered that when selenium is exposed to light it creates energy. In 1956, the first commercial solar cells became available. In the coming decades, solar became the preferred source of energy for satellites. Innovation in solar cell technology would further reduce the costs. Fast forward to present day. Solar United Neighbors is currently seeking 250 members to start the first upper Keys solar cooperative. So the Weekly asked…

Officials, parents discuss

O

ne of the main topics of conversation at Tuesday’s school board meeting centered around the safety of Monroe County students. According to Superintendent Mark Porter, “We are not starting from point zero; we are always working toward increasing efforts to provide safe schools for our students.”

Pat Lefere, the district’s director of Operations and Planning, said Porter’s statement is the biggest take away from the meeting. “The past 4 to 5 years, we have been updating safety procedures and security in schools,” he said. “This isn’t something new.”

Those include active shooter trainings held by FBI agents and school drills, infrastructure improvements like single point entry, securing doors and gates, and fence repairs, and updating and repairing camera security systems.

Monroe County Sheriff Office spokesperson Adam Linhardt said the law enforcement agency is not in charge of scheduling or conducting active school shooter drills in the Keys, although it does participate.

However, all new recruits do go through active school shooter training at the academy.

“But there is proposed legislation that would change that,” Linhardt said. “There is a plan to call for mandated, quarterly drills at schools throughout Florida that would be documented, approved and reviewed by local law enforcement. If that happens, our office would be much more proactive.”

The district also brought on a career law enforcement officer, Jason Brown, this week. “He will be assessing every school in the district to see where we need more improvements,” said Lefere.

Parents Catherine Dunn and Allison Sayer of Marathon addressed the board with their personal concerns about the lack of a School Resource Officer (SRO) on duty at Stanley Switlik Elementary School in Marathon.

Poinciana and Gerald Adams, which serve only elementary students, also do not have an officer. In the Keys, SROs are on duty at traditional combined elementary and middle schools, and all high schools.

“Each time I drop my children off, I say a prayer and there is a knot in my stomach,” said Dunn, a mother of four. “We have to do something. We need you to make the school as safe as we can.”

Sayer and Dunn said they have heard from other parents and offered the following suggestions to make the school safer: acquiring a metal detector, an armed security officer, and an onsite social worker to help those in need before they become young adults. The other budget issue is the cost of an in-school SRO in Monroe County: an estimated $50,000 per officer, shared between the district and jurisdiction, either Key West Police Department or Monroe County Sherriff’s Office.

Key Largo School teacher Shannon Hickery spoke against the idea of arming teachers. “We are trained to take care of our kids and our response,” she said. “The day that I have to go to a school knowing that my colleagues are armed, I will be done teaching. I don’t want to teach at a prison and our students don’t want to go to school in one either.”

School board member John Dick said that won’t happen. “That is off the table.”

School board member Ron Martin, a retired educator, said, “There is never a day that went by that I didn’t worry about this happening. I am hell bent to get something done. This is more than drills, we have to get back to the root of the evil, and that’s the gun.”

Board chair Bobby Highsmith suggested putting together a task force. He also said the U.S. Ranger Dive Team stationed in Key West has offered to teach emergency first aid to teachers and staff. He also brought up the lockout and door safety. “We need to do everything in our realm to keep our schools as safe as they can be,” he said.

All doors in new buildings are designed to open into the hallway to meet fire code. This means students would not be able to blockade themselves in a room to hide if there was an active shooter. “These were fire-related rules made long before we worried about bad guys in our schools,” Lafere said. “We have infrastructure money we can use to make investments in door jambs or other locks in the event of a crisis, if the board approves,” he said.

After the meeting, the board met in closed session to discuss further measures in private for security reasons.

Chi Sigma sorority has announced the 10 finalists for this year’s annual Miss Coral Shores Scholarship Contest. Nearly $1,000 in scholarship money is awarded to the winning “Queen” and $500 is given to the competition’s “princesses.” Prize scholarship money is solely funded by donations from previous queens. Another sorority, Sigma Omega, sponsors the princesses.

S

tarted in 1954, the pageant showcases the personal and academic achievements of 10 young ladies from Coral Shores’ junior class. Organized by Chi Sigma sorority, this year’s competition chairwoman is former Queen Julie Eakin.

In January, all eligible junior girls with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher were invited to enter. Prospective contestants submit paperwork along with essays to judges before an inperson interview. Beginning in March, the finalists will participate in weekly rehearsals leading up to the contest day on April 28 at 7 p.m. at the Coral Shores PAC Center.

“Within this contest there is also the Judy Hoke award, awarded to the girl who is always on time, turns her paperwork in on time, attends all the rehearsals or has taken the initiative to let someone know if they can’t make it; and Miss Congeniality award, chosen by the girls in the contest,” said Coral Shores High School graduate and Chi Sigma sorority member Sandy El-Koury.

Alexandra De Toro Involved in the National Honor Society, Yoga Club and Key club, De Toro found art to be a creative outlet outside of class. She paints with acrylics and oils. A regular volunteer at Islamorada’s First Baptist Church soup kitchen, De Toro helped coordinate last year’s Coral Isles Church Winter Fest and Thanksgiving grocery bagging at Publix.

She’d like to attend University of Central Florida before opening her own practice to work with children and adults in need of prosthetics.

Anna Carucci

A National Honor Society Scholar, Carucci has volunteered more than 100 hours over the last two years, including at the Upper Keys Humane Society. While living in Ankara, Turkey, Carucci helped feed refugees and raised money for an animal shelter housing more than 4,000 starving and diseased dogs. Her aspirations include graduating from West Point Military Academy and serving as an infantry soldier before seeking a law degree.

Emily Dillon

A dancer at heart, Dillon is the spirit captain of the school’s Canettes Dance Team and the junior class vice president.

Recognized with the “Heart of Gold” award by her dance peers over the summer, Dillon has given more than 1,000 documented hours of community based service over several years.

Her long-term goal is to stay in the Keys running her family’s business, Monroe County Fire Equipment.

A member of the National Honor Society, Student Leadership, and Mu Alpha Theta, Olsen is currently ranked first academically in her class.

Along with co-captaining the Canettes, Olsen performs for the school’s drama club and volunteers in the community as part of Interact club. Her plans are to dance her way through a four-year college while living in a major city like New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. Look for her in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!”

Katie Robinson

Robinson serves as secretary of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the math honor society, and the Student Government historian. A twosport athlete, she is on the varsity tennis team and captain of the cross-country team. She was selected for the “Hurricane Athletic Award” in both sports.

Her community service work includes creating an education health module for patients of the community health center in Tavernier. Robinson plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Lily Costa

As an athlete, Costa is currently ranked 8th in the state for pole vaulting. As an academic, she’s secretary of the National Honor Society, president of Science National Honor Society, and secretary of the Student Council. Costa regularly lends her time to service-based initiatives but especially feels proud of her work helping students faced with disabilities.

Her personal goal is to place in the top 3 at State track and field competition this year. Once she graduates, she’d like to study biochemistry at Boston University before moving on to veterinary school.

Sarah Kelley

A gifted writer, Kelley is the editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper, the Hurricane Watch. She’s been published in two Upper Keys publications already, including the Keys Weekly. Along

with being co-captain of the Canettes dance team, Kelley is a member of On Your Toes dance studio’s Elite Competition team. Her aspirations are in the world of theater, film-making, and screenplay writing.

Shannon McCormick A member of the Canettes, McCormick is a server and works management at Mangrove Mike’s Café. Her interests include dancing, cooking, thrift shopping and diving.

Her volunteerism includes working the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, Audubon Society, and passing out treats during Christmas at a nursing home. She hopes to study medicine at the University of Florida and one day become a neurologist.

Sophie Williams

Williams’ hobbies include dancing, kayaking and paddle boarding, photography, and working as the Key Club’s treasurer. Her personal goal is to graduate as valedictorian of the Coral Shores High School Class of 2019. One of her biggest dreams is to attend an Ivy League school. She know she wants to work in a science, technology, engineering, or math field, and is leaning toward becoming a biologist or astronomer.

Tara Amador

A member of the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Student Council, Amador has never missed a day of school. In fact, her personal goal is to make it to her senior year with perfect attendance. She’s the president and founder of the school’s Yoga Club and a member of the varsity tennis team. Amador volunteers at the MARC store three or four times a week and in the past has volunteered at the Elks Club and San Pedro Catholic Church.

olar United Neighbors’ Upper Keys Solar Co-op now has the 30 members needed to send out a request for proposals to solar panel installers.

With the request for proposals going out, the co-op will now begin notifying its members of openings on its selection committee. Members of the selection committee are tasked with reviewing installer bids, identifying any criteria for installations, making recommendations, and ultimately choosing a company to complete the installations.

Solar co-op members then have the option to purchase the panels based on the installer’s group rate.

Solar United Neighbors will teach members about de-centralized energy, explaining how it works, and educate consumers on solar economics. The organization also provides information on topics like roof warranties, pricing estimates, staffing capabilities, and will coordinate with the installer once chosen, said Monroe County co-op coordinator Jody Finvar.

“We take the bids, lay them out, and compare everything ‘apples to apples’ to help the cooperative make the best decision for their solar needs,” she said.

The Upper Keys Solar Co-op is for homeowners from the Long Key Bridge north. It is free to join, and joining the co-op is not a commitment to install a solar system. Homeowners can still sign up through May 8. The next information session is scheduled for Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at the Islamorada library.

According to Finvar, the determining factors for solar are size of roof and orientation toward the sun, the size of your electric bill, and the size of your budget.

“We talk about the cooperative process, what it means to be part of the co-op, how long the process takes in general, how we solicit requests for proposals, and the role the organization plays,” said Finvar.

The average size of a residential system is 7.6 kilowatts. A solar system is conservatively estimated to last 25 years, as most panels lose efficiency by half a percent a year, said Finvar. Homeowners can expect a system to pay for itself in six to seven years. The return on investment for homeowners is usually 12 percent to 15 percent, with the higher end of return coming to those who also own electric cars, said Finvar.

Some larger solar systems require liability insurance. Solar co-op members should inquire with local utility companies about interconnection agreements and requirements.

Since 2015, Solar United Neighbors has educated 6,000 Floridians on solar and has installed solar systems on more 760 homes. To sign up for the Upper Keys Solar Co-op visit solarunitedneighbors.org/upperkeys.

he 23rd annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market welcomed hundreds to Founders Park over the course of the weekend.

Traffic was affected, though the trolley the Rotary Clubs coordinated at Coral Shores High School helped. This year, the nautically themed market let visitors search for deals among more than 250 vendors. More than 130 Rotarians from the Upper Keys and Key Largo clubs volunteered their time to make the flea market a gigantic success.

eading up to its first ever Keys Kids Business Faire, the Brainery held its most recent kid’s business workshop on pricing, packaging, and developing a back story to a product on Feb. 24.

Set for Saturday, March 24, the business fair will give kids ages 7 to 17 the opportunity to showcase their product, service or business model. Island Christian School has partnered with the Brainery to host the event. Registration is $75, of which $25 will go back to the child in the form of a new college savings plan. The first place prize is valued at $1,500 in scholarship money; second is $1,000, third is $500.

Six businesses have partnered with the competition as sponsors, like Paddle the Florida Keys, which is sponsoring the third-place prize.

“It’s really important to foster that entrepreneurial spirit in people at a young age because operating and owning your business is not something that everyone does or is qualified to do,” said Scott Baste, owner of Paddle the Florida Keys. “I wish I had somebody help me out when I was their age.”

Baste said he has been an entrepreneur since his early 20s, and selfsufficient by 27.

Along with sponsoring the winner, Paddle the Florida Keys is interested in supporting entrepreneurs by selling some of their proposed products.

Business ideas can come from anywhere. The two beehives in Sofia Figueredo’s backyard were never meant to become a business venture, said her mother Elizabeth Jolin. It was originally just a fun learning experience for her daughter.

“She was fascinated by the whole process of how bees make honey and has read a ton of books on them,” said Jolin. “Once we got to the point of extracting the honey and had gallons and gallons of it, then we started to think of ways to sell honey products and byproducts of the beeswax.”

“To extract the wax we mash the honey comb and put it through a cooking process of boiling, cooling, and straining until it doesn’t have any particles or dirt in it. Then we add the other ingredients: shea butter, honey, coconut oil, and red powder if we’re making lipstick,” said Sofia.

Jolin has also noticed a positive unintended consequence of the situation. By simply having the conversation of pricing and factoring costs, her daughter is beginning to understand

the value of money.

“It’s completely eye-opening for a kid. This entrepreneurial effort is seguing nicely into the next phase of her life when she will start working for the things she really wants.”

Figueredo plans on pricing her “skinny” candles for $1, lip balm for $1.50, lipstick for $2.50, and larger candles for $5.

Second grader Sophia Allen’s first entrepreneurial inspiration came from a documentary on running shoes.

What caught her eye was the way the shoe company marketed their product.

When she finally decided on her product, hair sunscreen, she realized there could be a greater demand for the product because all her friends play outside. After going online and learning about how the sun can damage your hair, Allen decided on using natural oils, like coconut oil, in her sunscreen.

“The sun makes your hair crisp.

Without oil it could dry out,” said Sophia. “Whenever I go to the pool or beach, or even go outside for 10 minutes, my hair dries.”

She’s gathered the materials needed for the product, started making sunscreen and is now focusing on packaging and pricing.

began designing what her product and booth would look like. She’s also made a list of websites she wants to advertise on, and is researching shipping costs.

While some children are working on the details of their products, other kids like Maddie Hull have a bigger vision for their entrepreneurship. Hull is designing a 10-person café she has dubbed the Capital Kids Café.

“I wanted to start a café because I love baking,” said Maddie, who also helps with weekend breakfasts.

Her menu is growing and already includes some bakery staples, honey Madeleines, and banana pops dipped in warm chocolate.

“I recommend trying the Madeleines with a hot chocolate or tea,” she said.

She’s also been experimenting with different recipes and ingredients, like huckleberry, and is hoping to finalize her recipe for blueberry croissants before the competition.

Food isn’t the only thing you can buy at the café, though. A gift shop with homemade perfume and lip balm will also be incorporated. Maddie was inspired after chatting with her babysitter. She’s gone online to learn about the manufacturing process.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I hope to be remembered as the student who could help anyone, no matter the problem.

What are your plans after high school? Go to University of Florida, but I’m not sure of my major yet.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Travel somewhere outside of the U.S., take a road trip across the United States with no plans, and feel at peace with the world.
