Visitors boost Keys revenue

ith Pelican Cove due to reopen on Friday, Feb. 16, and Cheeca Lodge & Spa opening on Mar. 30, the number of lodging and hotel rooms available in Islamorada will reach the halfway mark of its pre-storm figures.

Altogether, the number of rooms throughout the islands that make up Islamorada is 1,300. Only 63 rooms are needed to reach 650, or half. Some resorts or hotels have full room availability while others have only partial availability. To compare, 91 percent of Key West’s rooms are available, Islamorada currently sits at 48 percent.

Immediately following Hurricane Irma, the total number of rooms open in Islamorada was only 80, said Islamorada Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Judy Hull.

“The majority of those rooms, if not all, were used to house recovery workers and displaced citizens,” said Hull. “Due to the lack of availability since then, we’ve seen the region have a downturn in bed tax revenue.”

The “bed tax” is refers to the fourcent tax added to every dollar spent on lodging in Monroe County. Funds generated from the tax are used by the county to advertise the Florida Keys nationwide.

Monroe County Tourist Development Council revenue reports indicate that of its five regions, Islamorada, which is District IV, has been affected the most by the shortage of rooms.

Compared to the previous fiscal year, tax revenues were down 76.8 percent in October. and 72.5 percent in November. That’s nearly $329,000 less than the year prior. If the trend continues, the Village of Islamorada could see losses of more than half a million dollars in the first quarter of the year alone.

The lack of tax revenue, though, does not indicate a lack of desire to visit.

Florida’s official state travel and vacation website, VisitFlorida.com, conducted research from Nov. 16 to Dec. 8 on tourist impressions in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Some of the questions used were based on feedback on social media just after storm and were given to travelers intending to visit the Keys.

The results were surprising.

“Prospective tourists were asked about the likelihood of vacation in the Keys in the winter months. The survey showed that travelers haven’t shifted their likelihood of coming,” said Monroe County Tourist Development Council’s Kelly Fountain.

As the research was concluded, the tourist council began its monthlong visitor profile study on Dec. 1.

Questions related to water quality, visiting expectations, and motivation for visiting were included in the surveys. The surveys were conducted when visitors had already arrived in Monroe County.

Eighty percent of those surveyed say they were motivated to visit the Keys, in part, to stimulate the economy and 70 percent say their expectations of the Keys in the aftermath of Irma were exceeded, said Fountain.

“We asked visitors about the media’s portrayal of the aftereffects of the storm. Fifty-eight percent of respondents said the Keys were in better shape than the media had portrayed,” said Fountain. “Perceptions keep getting better the further we get away from the hurricane. Once they get here, they have a really satisfying experience.”

As the busiest months of tourism season pass, there is optimism that the situation in Islamorada will improve, said Hull. Tinsley Advertising, Monroe County’s advertising arm, has purchased ads in nine major cities for February and March and has begun an online marketing campaign that includes digital partnerships with the Chicago Tribune, Philly.com, and Boston.com. The reopening of each resort and hotel is something businesses and residents alike should rejoice over, said Hull. We’re halfway there.

he Good Health Clinic is hosting its 7th annual Beach Luau on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Founders Park Beach, where it will crown this year’s winner of the Big Kahuna fundraising contest.

The competition kicked off on Nov. 1 and continued into the first week of February.

This year’s Kahuna hopefuls are Coastal Realty’s Eric Billips, Dr. Omani Diaz of Florida Keys Dentists, Mariners Hospital Director of Imaging J.C. Holmes, Cannon’s John Ribble, Florida Keys Electric Co-op’s Jason Richards, and Mariners Hospital’s Anais Diaz. The winner not only gets bragging rights, but also possession of the coveted Kahuna Tiki Trophy, for now held by last year’s winner Retz Reeves.

“Kahunas are chosen based on their relationship with the community, upstanding citizenship, and capacity to fundraise,” said the Good Health Clinic’s Kate Banick.

“The Kahuna competition alone can raise up to 20 percent of our operating costs.”

Over the course of the competition the six kahunas have partnered with more than 200 combined individuals and businesses, Banick estimated. Each went about raising money in creative ways.

Some of the Kahunas, like Holmes, harnessed the power of social media or used Go Fund Me to campaign. Known for his lionfish expertise, and cameos on Gordon Ramsay’s “The F Word,” Billips hosted a filmed Lion Fish Tasting to raise money. Ribble held a wine tasting, fantasy football event, backyard barbecue and karaoke contest. Richards hosted a corn

hole tournament and raffled off a golf cart donated by Key Largo’s RIVA motorsports.

“It’s an honor to be chosen to do this,” said Richards. “I stopped in and saw the work the clinic was doing. I didn’t realize the amount of people they were helping. A lot of time we take for granted being in good health.

I try to teach my kids to support their community. There a lot of people that can’t afford healthcare. They should be afforded the same opportunity to be helped as anybody else.”

Baptist Health’s Diaz partnered with the Green Turtle Inn to host a lip synching contest. Dr. Omani Diaz’s office promoted the fundraiser by raffling off a teeth whitening procedure and a Philips Sonicare toothbrush.

“Thank you to Frank Sansone and Mr. and Mrs. Joel Weider for their contributions to this great cause, and a huge thank you to my staff for their hard work raising awareness about the clinic,” said Dr. Diaz.

The money raised from the competition is put toward the clinic’s general operation costs.

“It enables us to be consistent in funding and helps make sure our facility remains fully operating, said Banick.

Banick said 60 percent of the Good Health Clinic’s patients were significantly affected by Hurricane Irma.

Since then, more than $35,000 worth of medications and medical supplies from national partners have been donated to the clinic. There is certainly a need for it.

Last year, the clinic provided $1.5 million in medications, and more than $4 million in medical services to county residents. The management of illness and debilitating conditions gets the clinic’s patients back on their feet fast, said Banick, as 35 percent of the clinic’s surveyed patients report missing less work after receiving medical services.

“The clinic also successfully arranged more than 30 charitable care surgeries, and has begun partnership with pharmaceutical companies,” said Banick.

n the statewide science assessments over the past three years, Monroe County has improved from 12th place to 4th in the state, according to Monroe County’s School District’s Science Coordinator Melissa Alsobrook. “That is really due to the emphasis of project based learning in the classroom,” she said. “The teachers are really embracing the use of the labs in the classroom.”

Science grades improve in county

The STEM fair gives students an opportunity to really showcase what they are doing in the classroom. Started in 2012-2013 school year, the past three years, students have received special awards in their divisions. “The middle schools have really embraced this and they always place really well,” said Alsobrooks.

The regional fair was held Jan. 27 with 104 projects submitted. There were 57 elementary, 36 middle school and 11 high school projects submitted.

The main goal going forward is to have more of the work done in the classroom with the assistance of a science teacher rather than at home. “We all know when they go home, mom and dad are up to midnight helping them with these,” said school board member Rob Martin.

“I am really glad to hear that this will move more toward the classroom,” said school board Vice Chair Mindy Conn, who has spent countless hours with her children at home working on these projects. “There used to be little to no opportunity for them to work on it in the classroom and at least in the middle school level, it is graded as a big portion of the science grade.”

epresenting Monroe County in the Upper Division competition at the State Science Fair are Coral Shores High School students Zane Absten, Mike Panse and Stephen Franks. The team of Panse and Franks won first place in the environmental sciences category for their project on tides. Absten won first for his presentation on bacteria at the beach.

“I started this project because I saw my little brother playing in the sand on a beach with a ‘No swimming’ sign,” said Absten. “I thought it might not have been safe for him to play in the sand if there was too much bacteria in the water to swim. Currently the beaches are closed based on the bacteria level in the water column at the beach, so I tested the interstitial water (the water mixed with sand) and the water at the beach from Key West to Jensen Beach. 271 Miles.”

Absten tested several locations, and was on the lookout for the enterococcus species of bacteria, which he said act as “indicator” bacteria for other possible harmful species of bacteria like E. Coli.

Treasure Village Montessori School students Olivia Sargent, Sophia Borders, and JP Unger will represent Monroe County in the junior division of the fair and present their findings. The junior division is made up of 6 – 8th grade students.

Sargent captured first place at Treasure Village’s competition, before a three-judge panel also awarded her with first in the chemistry category at districts.

“I wanted to test to see if the acidity levels of the ocean affect the erosion on limestone,” said Sargent.

An avid diver, Sargent said she was inspired by her surroundings to learn more about how the ocean and land interact. She hypothesized that the acidity of ocean water would affect erosion rates of limestone; though not visibly apparent, it would be measurable, she believed.

Sargent chose 12 limestone rocks to simulate the Florida Keys and distilled water with lemon juice to simulate ocean water. She recorded the initial mass of all 12 rocks with a specialized digital scale before beginning her experimentation phase.

“To test my hypothesis, I placed all 12 rocks into separate 50-millimeter beakers,” said Sargent. “Then I distributed water into the 12 beakers and divided them into separated groups. The first group, Group A, was the control group, and was given no drops of lemon juice. Group B had one drop of lemon juice, Group C had two drops, and Group D had 6 drops.”

She left all 12 beakers in an undistributed area for a week, and then measured the mass again.

While changes in mass were small, they were indeed measureable.

Sargent found that the acidity does affect the erosion rate, and postulated that the more acidic the ocean was, the more the limestone would erode.

“I’m very proud of Olivia; she worked very hard,” said her mother, Amy Sargent. “She is very interested in marine biology, and has been SCUBA certified since 10, so she takes extra interest in anything related to the ocean. Living here in the Keys has given her the opportunity to have her favorite hobby right in her back yard, so not only is it fun for her, it’s her interest in school.

She put her heart and soul into it because it fascinated her.”

Marathon student tests football helmets’ protection SARA MATTHIS

enior Nicole Lera will represent Marathon High School when she attends the statewide science fair March 27-30 in Lakeland, Florida. Her experiment tested the protection from concussion offered by different brands of football helmet.

Lera was a manager for the high school football team this year, and she’s no stranger to the field herself.

“I’ve goalied in soccer and had a concussion before,” she said, adding that concussions can cause irreversible brain damage, including the very serious CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma.

She tested the helmets using the school’s high-end force sensors, which the physics class uses to measure collisions. But she also included some old-school technology — tiny metal disks covered in a sleeve of carbon paper. Larger impacts caused the carbon paper to “print” the image on the disk beneath it.

AP physics and honors physical science teacher Chris Hayes said he was pleased with her work, which earned her a spot to move on to the State Science Fair.

“She went above and beyond,” he said.

Lera used a 10-pound medicine ball on the three helmets. She dropped it on the helmet from a standing height, then used moderate force, and then gave it everything she had, slamming it into the helmet.

While the Zenith helmet performed best, the results were still disquieting, she said.

“There was a significant amount of force transferring from the outside of the helmet to the inside in all cases,” she said.

The best helmet is the newest.

Called a “bonnet,” it features a separate padding structure inside the helmet rather than cushions glued in place. The extra space, plus the structure of inverted cups inside the padding, performed the best.

She used a Labquest calculator to measure the force in G’s.

Some football teams are beginning to incorporate helmet sensors for regular play, although it is far from an industry standard.

State Qualifying students include: Six individual slots and two team slots are awarded in Monroe County students. These students will move on to the state fair held in Orlando in March.

Dozens involved in ‘Joseph’

oral Shores High School drama club students have been honing their stage skills for this year’s biggest production, Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The biblically-inspired musical follows the Old Testament’s Joseph on his journey from castoff slave to second in command.

The show includes musical numbers from all sorts of genres like country, ballads, cabaret and even disco. Thirty-eight elementary and middle school students from Treasure Village Montessori Charter School, Ocean Studies Charter School, Key Largo School, and Plantation Key School make up the production’s enormous choir. “‘Joseph’ is a musical that I have wanted to direct for over 15 years, and I’m excited to finally do it this year,” said Director/Producer Michele Zofchak. “I have a large cast of over 70 students, and they are all working hard to bring the best possible show to the community. Mark your calendars because you are not going to want to miss this!”

pening night for the Key Players’ adapation of the H.G. Wells science fiction classic, “War of the Worlds,” is set for Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center. An eager and excited cast invited the Weekly to its first dress rehearsal for a sneak preview.

“War of the Worlds the Radio Show” is based on original scripts used by the cast of the Orson Wellesdirected radio show. The now infamous Halloween broadcast first aired on Oct. 30, 1938, and was heard by more than 30 million people.

Depicted as live news bulletins, the broadcast terrified listeners who believed Martian invaders had arrived in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey and had begun laying waste to humanity. The mass hysteria that followed helped make the radio adaptation of “War of the Worlds” one of the most popular radio shows of all time.

Director/Producer Jonelle Kop added a creative touch to the show by writing a handful of skits to accompany the original script. The skits portray families unaware that the broadcast is fake.

“Even though the radio show was from the 1930s, I feel like the way people reacted could be relevant today,” said 10-year Key Players veteran Suzanne Nason. “Maybe not by the threat of Martians, but certainly from some other existential threat.”

Now in his second major production with the Key Players, Craig Zabransky said he appreciates the impact the broadcast had on society and his own childhood. Zabransky cycles among five characters during the show, most notably depicting onthe-scene reporter Carl Phillips and

“I truly enjoy the historical aspect of the show; I knew about this show from my childhood watching the early black and white movie,” said Zabransky. “From there I learned that an original radio show really scared the world. So it is really special to be reading these original scripts and playing the original characters created for the original October evening in 1938.”

Some of Zabransky’s most dramatic lines come at the end of Act I, as the battle against the invading alien race seems lost.

Following Opening Night, scheduled evening shows of “War of the Worlds the Radio Show” are on Feb. 9, 10, 15, and 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center. reat White is one of the headlining bands in 2018’s Coral Head Music Festival set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18 in Marathon. It’s the second annual rock and roll festival and the lineup is more eclectic this year, but that doesn’t mean fans won’t enjoy the offerings of the likes of Great White.

It’s the opposite of “Once Bitten Twice Shy.” When the band rolls up to the music festival in the Middle Keys, it will have just finished a Monsters of Rock cruise from Miami to Jamaica, featuring the likes of Tesla, Winger and, of course, Great White.

Mark Kendall, the founding member of the wildly popular ’80s band, said the group has worked consistently throughout the years. In fact, it just released a new album, “Full Circle,” that grew out of a previous rock cruise when he bumped into an old friend.

“Michael Wagener did our very first EP and album and we parted ways for no particular reason,” Kendall said of Wagener, the legendary producer behind such acts as Alice Cooper, Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne. “As I was walking away from him he called out, ‘Hey, why don’t we get together and do something again?’”

The result is something that sounds like the old Great White, with some nice surprises.

“Well, it’s hard to get away from yourself,” Kendall laughed, “but we got that blues and rock and ballad thing going on. But we stretched out a little bit on a couple of the songs. ‘The Cry of a Nation’ was born when I listened to ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’ — it doesn’t change key for a long time, or at least when you expect it to.”
