FISHERMEN’S HOSPITAL WILL BUILD NEW FACILITY $40 million investment includes goal of $15 million in philanthropic support SARA MATTHIS sara@keysweekly.com

or months, the Middle Keys have been waiting to find out what Baptist Health South Florida’s plans are for Fishermen’s Hospital, badly damaged by Hurricane Irma a little more than two months after the parent company purchased the community hospital in Marathon.

The question was whether it would be renovated, or rebuilt. On Monday, Baptist Health announced it would start from scratch.

According to a press release, construction of the $40 million facility is anticipated to begin during the first half of 2019, with a goal of raising $15 million of that total through philanthropy.

“This plan reflects our vision for improving and investing in the health of our communities with an emphasis on compassion,” said Baptist Health South Florida President and CEO Brian E. Keeley. “We look forward to continuing to implement that vision as we construct a new, state-of-the-art facility to serve the Middle Keys community.”

Sixteen days after the storm passed, Fishermen’s Hospital opened with a field hospital, a “mash” unit, in the parking lot of its facility. It is a five-bed emergency department, sixbed in-patient department, diagnostic equipment and a lab. On Dec. 15, the hospital approached the Monroe County Board of Commissioners about space at the Marathon airport to erect a modular hospital, a transitional step during construction of the new facility.

However, Baptist Health has decided to put the modular hospital on the southwest corner of the hospital parking lot, nearest the library, for reasons that were not disclosed. The modular hospital is estimated to cost $3 million.

Once it’s up and running, the field hospital will be dismantled.

According to the press release, the custom-designed modular hospital will have expanded capabilities and staffing that will remain in place until the entirely new facility opens.

The new hospital is expected to have fewer than 25 beds, a 24/7 emergency room, inpatient and outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging, lab testing,

and physical and occupational therapy.

The footprint of the new building will be about half of what it is now.

“The footprint of the old building was something like 76,000 square feet,” said Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Mariners Hospital CEO Rick Freeburg. “The new one will be about 40,000 square feet, and a more efficient use of space.” Freeburg said it would be built to Category 5 standards and feature LEED-certified construction, as is typical of all Baptist Health’s new construction.

Baptist Health Foundation – the fundraising division of Baptist Health South Florida – will launch a campaign to achieve the philanthropic goal of $15 million for Fishermen’s.

“Fishermen’s Community Hospital Foundation has a long history of generous philanthropy and we will be looking to the community again,” said Wendy Gentes, director of Development at Baptist Health South Florida.

She said the foundation would also be approaching sources outside of the community, exploring grant possibilities and engaging with partners on the mainland that support hurricane rebuilding relief. The campaign will begin with a fundraiser this weekend at a private residence in Marathon and continue on March 15 with another party at The Turtle Hospital. The parties give hospital officials a chance to connect with possible donors.

“People need to know what they are investing in, we need these conversations about health care in our community,” Gentes said, adding that other campaigns and events will solicit other types of help. “Every penny makes a difference.”

Freeburg said the entire undertaking from field hospital to modular hospital to new construction is expensive.

“We are asking the community to help us come up with the funds we are going to need, to build the hospital we know the community wants,” Freeburg said.

e’ve been juggling,” said Marathon resident Liz Samess.

She’s mother to two girls, ages 4 and 6. Like many families with young children, it’s been almost a daily struggle to arrange for child care since Hurricane Irma — whether that’s all day, or just an after-school program to bridge the gap until mom and dad are done with work.

“We’ve found friends and family that can help but, honestly, it’s just frustrating,” said Samess.

Out of the 32 childcare centers and home providers in the Keys monitored by the Early Learning Coalition, 24 were damaged by Hurricane Irma, according to the coalition, which keeps track of the situation because it administers a school readiness program.

in the Keys spent weeks juggling new spaces and provisional inspections and licenses from the state Department of Children and Families to operate in loaned facilities. For example, the Banana Cabanna of Cudjoe Key found a temporary home at Suglarloaf Elementary School in two borrowed classrooms. After about two months, the repairs were made to the childcare facility and the kids are home again.

Kreative Kids in Marathon had a similar situation. It found space at the Adult Education Center, but it is set to be demolished for the construction of a new county library. It will be another two weeks before Kreative Kids has finished the repairs and inspections and the kids can come through the doors again.

WHAT IS THE ELC? The Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring early care and education for children in MiamiDade and Monroe counties.

Through a variety of affordable and innovative early education and voluntary pre-kindergarten programs, the coalition serves more than 50,000 children up to age 12, and their families.

Founded in 2000, the coalition is among 30 similar organizations in Florida established following the enactment of the School Readiness Act, which consolidated Florida’s early learning services into one program.

“County officials were very gracious and gave us extension after extension,” said Keith LaFountain of New Assembly of God, the parent organization of Kreative Kids. “We’ve hired a crew to work all day and all night. We need to get four rooms and the hallway and bathroom complete.”

Kreative Kids is housed in the New Life Assembly of God church in Marathon. The repairs to the sanctuary, and even the completion of the church’s playground, started before the storm, will have to wait. LaFountain said although there have been teams of volunteers and donations, the church is still struggling to put back what Irma wrecked. That childcare facility is not alone.

The coalition partnered with the Save the Children Foundation and provided grants totaling $19,000 to support 19 facilities in restoration and rebuilding efforts. The grants paid for roofing, windows, playground repair and to buy new refrigerators and air conditioners. One of the most esoteric needs? Shade. The ELC also helped to purchase canopies for many of the centers that lost trees resulting in playgrounds that were too hot for kids to play comfortably.

ELC and Save the Children also fed the families and childcare staff after Hurricane Irma, a total of $75,000 in Publix gift cards were handed out around the holidays with a F$10,000 boost from Publix Super Market Charities. Despite those efforts, many children today still do not have childcare, or their families have packed up and left the islands for at least partly that reason.

“Before the storm, we served about 32 kids with fulltime care and 68 kids with our afterschool program,” said Maria Vaillant, director of Kreative Kids. “Before we closed our doors on Feb. 2, we had 20 fulltime and 36 afterschool children.”

ELC doesn’t have exact numbers on how many children are “missing” from childcare other than to say that at the height of the program it served 747 children and that number is now 459 at the last count in December.

“But that loss is due to a variety of reasons such as children aging out, parents having an increase of income and no longer qualifying or families transferring out of county or state,” said Laurie Dunn, a family support and early learning specialist for ELC. Valliant said Kreative Kids is missing children, too.

“Some families left because their kids were getting sick living in damaged homes. One family moved to Sebastian, another to Ohio, another to Michigan. Some of them lost their homes so they couldn’t come back.”

contingent of about 75 representatives from the Florida Keys headed to Tallahassee this week. Set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 6-7, the annual Florida Keys Day meeting is geared toward sharing Keys needs and issues with state powers.

The annual event grew out of a Leadership Monroe class project in 2009, when now-state Rep. Holly Raschein was still a legislative assistant for then-Rep. Ron Saunders. The event and itinerary is organized by her office.

“We have so many important issues on the table this year, especially regarding hurricane recovery issues,” said Erin Muir of Raschein’s office. “We were a little worried that the group from the Keys wouldn’t be as large this year, but the opposite is true. People are energized.”

Upper Keys resident Sue Woltanski of Common Ground, an education advocate, is going this year, as she has the past four years. She is also currently enrolled in the Leadership Monroe class of 26.

“It’s a good way to bring Keys issues to the legislators, as well as hear what issues are important to Keys leaders,” she said. “I go because I believe education is an important issue for all communities, and that is not often a top concern represented up there.”

Florida Keys Days starts with a reception on Tuesday night, an icebreaker before a long day of presentations and meetings on Wednesday.

Muir said attendees will hear from many agencies, including the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the state’s Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, Florida Housing Finance Corporation Executive Director Harold “Trey” Price and Speaker Pro Tem Jeannette Nunez.

“Patronis’ presentation should be interesting because his office is heavily involved in insurance from the consumer’s standpoint,” Muir said. “And Nunez is the chairperson of the Select Committee on Hurricane Response and Preparedness.”

Some representatives of Keys municipalities break off from the schedule for arranged meetings with key legislators about specific issues.

Woltanski said one of the “don’t miss” events of Florida Keys Day is the courtyard party on Wednesday evening. She said the servers are often Florida State University students from the Keys, and local musicians also play.

“It’s a really Keys vibe. The party is a great place to lobby because it reminds everybody what the Keys is all about,” she said. “Plus, the free food is really good and everyone turns out.”

Hawks Cay Resort has announced it will open for business on March 16 with approximately 100 villas available for rent. n the statewide science assessments over the past three years, Monroe County has improved from 12th place to 4th in the state, according to Monroe County’s School District’s Science Coordinator Melissa Alsobrook. “That is really due to the emphasis of project based learning in the classroom,” she said. “The teachers are really embracing the use of the labs in the classroom.”

The STEM fair gives students an opportunity to really showcase what they are doing in the classroom. Started in 2012-2013 school year, the past three years, students have received special awards in their divisions. “The middle schools have really embraced this and they always place really well,” said Alsobrooks.

The regional fair was held Jan. 27 with 104 projects submitted. There were 57 elementary, 36 middle school and 11 high school projects submitted.

The main goal going forward is to have more of the work done in the classroom with the assistance of a science teacher rather than at home. “We all know when they go home, mom and dad are up to midnight helping them with these,” said school board member Rob Martin.

“I am really glad to hear that this will move more toward the classroom,” said school board Vice Chair Mindy Conn, who has spent countless hours with her children at home working on these projects. “There used to be little to no opportunity for them to work on it in the classroom and at least in the middle school level, it is graded as a big portion of the science grade.”

Marathon student tests football helmets’ protection SARA MATTHIS

S

enior Nicole Lera will represent Marathon High School when she attends the statewide science fair March 27-30 in Lakeland, Florida. Her experiment tested the protection from concussion offered by different brands of football helmet.

Lera was a manager for the high school football team this year, and she’s no stranger to the field herself.

“I’ve goalied in soccer and had a concussion before,” she said, adding that concussions can cause irreversible brain damage, including the very serious CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma.

She tested the helmets using the school’s high-end force sensors, which the physics class uses to measure collisions. But she also included some old-school technology — tiny metal disks covered in a sleeve of carbon paper. Larger impacts caused the carbon paper to “print” the image on the disk beneath it.

AP physics and honors physical science teacher Chris Hayes said he was pleased with her work, which earned her a spot to move on to the State Science Fair.

“She went above and beyond,” he said.

Lera used a 10-pound medicine ball on the three helmets. She dropped it on the helmet from a standing height, then used moderate force, and then gave it everything she had, slamming it into the helmet.

While the Zenith helmet performed best, the results were still disquieting, she said.

“There was a significant amount of force transferring from the outside of the helmet to the inside in all cases,” she said.

The best helmet is the newest. Called a “bonnet,” it features a separate padding structure inside the helmet rather than cushions glued in place. The extra space, plus the structure of inverted cups inside the padding, performed the best.

She used a Labquest calculator to measure the force in G’s.

Some football teams are beginning to incorporate helmet sensors for regular play, although it is far from an industry standard.

State Qualifying students include: Six individual slots and two team slots are awarded in Monroe County students. These students will move on to the state fair held in Orlando in March.

More than two dozen volunteers helped when the Middle Keys Action Network (MKAN) staged its second community cleanup event on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb 4.

Twenty-seven volunteers participated from start to finish, according to Judy Manning, including the mayor of Marathon, Michelle Coldiron, “and even two sets of walkers who were just strolling by and decided to pitch in.”

In just under two hours, the much-used section of the bike path and airport perimeter road along U.S. 1 near the Jet Center -- which was choked with debris after Hurricane Irma -- was cleared and “is now looking 100% better,” Manning said.

The City’s Public Works Department provided heavy-duty trash bags, gloves and a large field truck to haul away the stuffed trash bags;

the recyclable materials recovered went home with several volunteers.

T.J. Henderson, deputy director of airports, helped get county approval for the event.

Among the items found were a mermaid Christmas ornament, a set of CDs from the ’80s, a shower curtain still in its original package and a large canvas pet carrier, “fortunately sans pet,” Manning said.

reat White is one of the headlining bands in 2018’s Coral Head Music Festival set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18 in Marathon. It’s the second annual rock and roll festival and the lineup is more eclectic this year, but that doesn’t mean fans won’t enjoy the offerings of the likes of Great White. It’s the opposite of “Once Bitten Twice Shy.” When the band rolls up to the music festival in the Middle Keys, it will have just finished a Monsters of Rock cruise from Miami to Jamaica, featuring the likes of Tesla, Winger and, of course, Great White.

Mark Kendall, the founding member of the wildly popular ’80s band, said the group has worked consistently throughout the years.

In fact, it just released a new album, “Full Circle,” that grew out of a previous rock cruise when he bumped into an old friend.

“Michael Wagener did our very first EP and album and we parted ways for no particular reason,” Kendall said of Wagener, the legendary producer behind such acts as Alice Cooper, Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne. “As I was walking away from him he called out, ‘Hey, why don’t we get together and do something again?’”

The result is something that sounds like the old Great White, with some nice surprises.

“Well, it’s hard to get away from yourself,” Kendall laughed, “but we got that blues and rock and ballad thing going on. But we stretched out a little bit on a couple of the songs. ‘The Cry of a Nation’ was born when I listened to ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’ — it doesn’t change key for a long time, or at least when you expect it to.”

The band plays about 70 to 80 gigs a year. Many are in casino halls, others are at music festivals. Sometimes bands of the same era go together on tour as a package, but it’s a far cry from the crazy ’80s when the band would spend almost a year on tour.

Great White has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, has six Top 100 Billboard hits, nine Top 200 Billboard albums, two platinum albums, and clocked the top of MTV video four times. (Who can forget model Bobbie Brown in “Once Bitten”?)

The band’s day-to-day activities are a little different now, though. In fact, Kendall apologized for delaying the Weekly interview. (“I had to take my grandson to school today” and “I play pool at just under pro caliber.”) He said he has more time now to reflect about the music he’s made, the music he will make, and the influences that brought him to this point.

“I’ve met all, or most, of my heroes — Billy Givens, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy,” Kendall said. “The one thing that impressed me is that they are all so soulful, and so down to earth. And sweet. And they don’t understand how much their work and their songs mean. It’s like you have to explain it to them.”

Almost three-and-a-half decades gone by. 1984 was a big year in my world, and the world in general. Apple introduced the Macintosh. Michael Jackson was burned filming a Pepsi commercial, and Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father. Prince released “Purple Rain,” Tina Turner released “Private Dancer,” Springsteen released “Born in the U.S.A.,” and Van Halen released (of course) “1984.”

And February of 1984 was when I performed my first gig in the Keys, at the old Compass Lounge in the old Holiday Inn. I had already been on the road a few years at that point, working in a duo with Sallie Foster, another veteran performer who is an amazingly talented singer and entertainer. The Holiday Inn in Marathon was just another road gig (so we thought) on a five-week South Florida leg that included a stint on the old SeaEscape cruise ship sailing daily to Freeport and back.

Neither of us expected the warm welcome and loads of gig offers we received when we got here. As a musician, it was an amazing gift to be able to perform in one wonderful tropical island destination, and make a living playing music without having to travel.

Sallie and I played at the old Holiday Inn as it changed to the Marathon Inn and then the Days Inn of Marathon.

Months later, we formed the Red Hots and played at Sombrero Resort. I left that band back in 1986 to pursue my solo career and other projects, and thus began the Perpetual Island Tour!

Marathon was a bit different in 1984. U.S.1 through town was mostly two-lane and didn’t become four lanes until the Overseas Lounge. During season, traffic could be problematic.

During the three years of the four-lane construction, traffic was a legitimate nightmare. Aviation Boulevard was the Marathon construction bypass. There were not a lot of businesses that we take for granted now. But we did have a Lum’s Hot Dogs where the Schmitt Real Estate building is located.

Bars could stay open 24 hours, and many did. Late nights turned into early mornings, and I recall more than a few nights coming out of a dark club and being blinded by sunlight. The Idle Hour, the Driftwood, the Overseas, the Dog House, the Reef Bar, and the Brass Monkey all stayed open as late or as early as the clientele hung out. And there was a place called Fanny’s … you might be able to guess what happened there. These days, sea turtles recover where … stuff hung out.

In addition to all the solo gigs, I performed (a lot) with Roy McAdams and Glenn Faast, had a stint in the Brass Monkey band with Freddie Bye, Ronnie B, and JOHN Robyn Robbins BARTUS (Google that name is a City Council for a music history member and Vice tidbit), and played Mayor of the City in other bands of Marathon. John is also a musician with names like the Dead Parrot who performs around town at Society, Men Withvarious establish- out Parents, Stark ments.

Naked and the Car Thieves, and (now) Storm Watch and Jade Storm (with the amazing and incredibly talented Adrienne Z.).

During those 34 years, I’ve managed to have a few side jobs (writing, publishing, broadcasting, politics), but none could ever take the place of my “day job” — playing music. To celebrate the past three-plus decades of my Perpetual Island Tour, I’m playing a special 34th anniversary concert this Sunday, 4 p.m., at the gazebo in Key Colony Beach (between City Hall and the Key Colony Inn). Please stop by, say hello, and enjoy an afternoon of music — mostly my songs, with some choice covers thrown in. Thanks to the Key Colony Beach Community Association for having me as part of the Concerts in the Park series, and thank you to everyone who has enjoyed my music throughout the years and helped me realize that we truly are “The Heart of the Keys.” Whatever the future holds — and I’m hoping for no more “tropical events” like Irma — I don’t plan on putting the guitar down any time soon! kay, so I rented a mini excava-

tor two weekends ago.

Well, really, I rented it in October and it just became available. We live on a very wooded lot on Grassy Key — less wooded after Irma, but still — that suffers from a serious infection of Sansevieria. It’s also known as “mother-inlaw tongue” for good reason: it’s mean and it won’t quit.

Over the years, I’ve pulled out cans and cans of that stuff but the carrotlike root is tenacious. In 18 years, I’ve cleared our yard of about two living room-size areas of the plant, but there’s still a modest McMansion left.

And so, one day, suffering from storm stress, I reserved a mini excavator for my own use as a combined birthday and Christmas present to me, from me.

And by my own use, I mean somebody else who would work for free and knew who to operate the machine.

That person never materialized.

On Friday, I had the machine but no operator and plenty of husbandly doubts to overcome regarding household fiscal responsibility. I did what any normal, middle-aged woman with no operator experience would do.

After newspapering all day, I changed into work clothes, cracked a beer and started it down the long driveway to the street with no clear idea of what the hell I was doing beyond the twominute tutorial offered to me at the rental place, which I played down with appropriate nonchalance — “Sure, it couldn’t hurt.”

But here’s the thing. It was slow.

Super slow. It forced me to stop the machine mid-driveway, turn it off, climb down and walk to the house for a second beverage before resuming the turtle crawl to the street. (I would find out about the red-tipped throttle handle later.) I whacked around in the

Before setting off to his work on Saturday, my husband alerted me to the danger areas — something about the importance of avoiding existing utilities or squirrels, I’m not sure which.

I had only a sketchy plan — outfit, music, beverage supply. And so to a playlist featuring mostly AC/DC blaring over the earbuds, I made an awkward beginning until I learned that the “back and forth-y thingy” was the best technique.

In two days, I cleared about half the square footage of the aforementioned McMansion. I had to remove two or three small bushes and in at least two cases those were intentional.

Also, I got very “wobbly” at one point and had to take a deep breath, pull up my big girl undies and power through.

By the way, “wobbly” and “back and forth-y thingy” is established operator language. I know, I looked at the manual before I started. I’m not stupid.

By the end of my three-day rental (you only pay for Friday), I was quite adept at the machine. It requires, I learned, a woman’s soft touch. And if my neighbors Jim and Mary out walking their dog were a big surprised when I yelled, “Look at me! I am the coolest @##$% person on the planet!” … they took it in stride. Perhaps they are unfamiliar with the incredible rush that comes from renting your own machine, and learning how to use it.

Alas, my approach to renting machinery was much the same as getting eyeglasses for the first time. I expected a new pair of specs to be a magic bullet, resulting in good-as-new eyesight.

With the mini ex what happened was I created enough work for a team of laborers for several days. Remember that non-existent operator? Well, the crew was non-existent, too. I will spend the rest of my natural-born life carting the displaced mother-in-law tongue to the street and filling garbage cans as prescribed by the amount of “free” time I currently enjoy, and the number of garbage cans that I currently possess.

Unless I rent a Bobcat to push everything to the street. Huh. Well, okay then.
