President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union speech mentioned, among other things, jobs, tax reform, the economy, small business and immigration.

After recognizing a handful of heroes from the Las Vegas mass shooting, California wildfires and Hurricane Harvey, he declared, “The State of our Union is strong because our people are strong.” But in the hierarchy of “strength,” nobody has been stronger recently than Conchs (duh, Keys Strong). So the Weekly asked …

What’s the State of the Conch Republic?

“In one word, ‘improving.’ Certainly Irma left her mark with many of the scars still visible, from lost landscape and destroyed housing, roadside debris still uncollected and plenty of the parks and businesses either closed or only partially open,” said Craig Zabransky of the Key Players.

“Legitimate concerns exist for both tourism and service employment opportunities along with affordable housing for the local working class. Yet, I remain optimistic, because of the Conch spirit. People here are not asking ‘when will they help us?’ They realize (and moved here) because, ‘we are they.’ We are all helping each other in the community and it’s inspiring to witness.”

PRINT IS NOT DEAD Growth feeds our promise

E

arlier this week a report announced the demise of the Keynoter and Upper Keys Reporter as we know it, leaving a void in the Florida Keys that will be nearly impossible to fill. For more than 60 years their reporters have done an admirable, difficult and often thankless job of covering the news in the islands.

We have shared many professional and personal moments with the Keynoter and Reporter family over the years. And while we would often battle over competitive differences, we also served and lived together here in our tight communities we call home. We sincerely wish the best for our colleagues and will miss them, as their efforts made us strive to become a better publication.

And yet, with another publication retreating from a tangible “thing” you can hold in your hands, again we face the cliché we have heard for a decade: “Print is dead.”

Print is not dead. It is a living, breathing medium filled with creativity, information and entertainment.

The Keys Weekly Newspapers was born in a converted apartment back in 2003 as the Marathon Weekly. Since then, we have opened additional offices in Key West and Tavernier and our publishing group produces (on average) 112 pages per week in newsprint, more than 30 annual magazines — including the Florida Keys Hurricane Guide, dining guides, the Monroe County Annual Report, Tropical Living specialty guides and festival programs for the biggest events in the Keys.

Serving our community is what has helped us grow from a five-person staff in a makeshift space into a full-fledged publishing company with 16 employees — including two new full-time employees hired earlier this month. And owning homes, having children in our schools, serving on nonprofit boards, putting on events like the “Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards” and “Best of Marathon,” and participating in and supporting what matters in our community has, we believe, allowed us to recognize the delicate balance of hard news and community news needed here.

It is not a secret formula, but it does require local ownership. Local participation. Local knowledge. And above all, a sense of local empathy injected into community journalism.

Across the country locally owned community newspapers are thriving — mostly under the weekly model, which allows for contemplative journalism outside of the realm of daily “top stories” that are read and just as quickly forgotten. Our reasons for growth and success are like many. Maybe it is because we must make the model work in order to support our staff and their families. Maybe it is because we realize the first objective is to serve our community — rather than to sensationalize it for short-term shock value.

The Keys Weekly is growing. And just as our print continues to grow, so does our digital footprint here and beyond. Today we govern two Facebook pages with more than 25,000 organic likes, an email blast that reaches tens of thousands, a web page that has exceeded metrics beyond our wildest imagination.

We promise there will be a print edition of the Keys Weekly available from the stretch to the Southernmost Point each and every week. And we promise — print is not dead. In fact, we are just getting started.

NOLA ACKER JOINS KEYS WEEKLY GABRIEL SANCHEZ

he Weekly is proud to announce the latest addition to the Upper Keys Weekly team, Account Executive Nola Acker.

Born and raised in Wadsworth, Ohio, Acker attended the University of Akron, majoring in English, following a stint at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.

After meeting her husband Scott and having their first child, Acker made a career change into the banking world. For more than a decade Acker worked for Bank One – which later became Chase Bank – and worked her way up from teller to Chase At Work Regional Specialist. Once Ohio winters became unbearable for the Acker family, they looked into relocating to warmer weather. After putting out applications, Acker was hired by First State Bank as the Key Largo branch manager.

“We had never visited the Keys before my interview with the bank, but things just fell into place both for myself and my husband; we joked that ‘the island wanted us’ – as fans of the TV show ‘Lost,’” said Acker.

Acker said her favorite thing about living and working in the Keys is the community she serves. She is the current president of the Key Largo Cultural Center, a director for the Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation, and serves on an at-large seat for the northernmost advisory committee of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

“I am so excited to join the incredible Weekly staff to continue serving the business community and using my gift of gab to promote local!”

Acker is a Tavernier resident where she resides with husband Scott, and their dog Kyra and cat Ollie. Her daughter, Anna, attends the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!) and her son, Sam, attends Ohio State in Columbus.

Rockers team up to compose Irma-inspired record

ocal two-piece act Lung is preparing for the digital release of its album benefitting victims of Hurricane Irma titled “In the Key of West.” The three-song album will be available on iTunes and SoundCloud. No strangers to hit music, the husband-and-wife duo of Chris and Ric Chandler have also enlisted the help of former bandmates and musicians from bands like Bone Rubbers, Modern English and Duran Duran.

Grammy award-winning engineer Chris Lord-Alge is mixing the track. Some of Lord-Alge’s collaborations include The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against The Machine.

The two musicians, however, almost ended up victims themselves.

Just two days before Hurricane Irma hit the Keys, the Chandlers arrived in Fort Lauderdale from a month-long trip in Europe. Still getting over jet lag, they turned on the television to see what the weather was going to be like for a potential beach day. Their plans quickly changed.

“We called our friends and asked what we should do. They told us it was the real deal, and told us to leave, so we drove down, packed up everything and our two cats, and left,” said Chris.

Thirty-six agonizing hours later, the two found themselves in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

“We have always been fans of delta blues, so it was actually a dream to end up in Clarksdale,” said Chris. “We arrived in a room that we rented out for two nights. It was an old barber shop that was remodeled from the 1930s, so there was really some soul to this place.”

After settling in, the two decided to venture out into the city separately. When they returned, each had brought back an idea. Within a few hours they had written the song “Clarksdale.”

Once the storm passed, it was time to go home.

It was on the drive back that the Chandlers started brainstorming ways to help out. Using their musical talents to help the community only made sense, and that’s when Ric remembered a song he had previously started but never finished, called “In the Key of the West.”

The song, which had a melody and hook already written, was meant to be an homage to driving through the island chain, said Ric. Along with “Clarksdale,” the couple said the two songs best represent how they felt following the hurricane. Along with a Spanish version of “In the Key of West,” Lung plans on bundling the three tracks and retailing the album for $5.

Ric’s former Modern English bandmate, Mick Conroy, Dom Brown of Duran Duran, and Takumi Iida joined the star-studded lineup of rockers and recorded “In the Key of West.” Guitarist Phil Bonin and bassist Phil Rubio of Bone Rubbers also teamed up on the project to record instrumentals for “Clarksdale.” Local artist Megan Jones created custom album artwork for the digital release, and the band has recruited Dennis Holmes to direct and produce a music video for the track. While white and black student graduation rates rose last year in Monroe County schools, the Hispanic graduation percentage fell last year. There are many factors, but one could be budget cuts in certain English as a second language courses being offered.

he overall trend looks positive across Monroe County’s graduation rates. “As the state is getting better, so is our district,” said Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability David Murphy, who was tasked with tracking the graduation rates over the past five years. “In terms of closing the gap, we haven’t done that yet, and that is one of the frustrations.” Since the 2012-13 year, Monroe County has dragged behind the state by an average of about 3 percent.

Last year, 27 students were true dropouts. However, students still enrolled, those who received a certificate of completion, received a GED or a special diploma are still included in the non-graduate rate. Together, those students number an additional 100.

Murphy reported a district success with closing the gap between white students and black students in overall district rates and emphasized the increase in black student graduation district-wide, with Key West High School’s percentage helping overall.

Murphy cited the ESE student population in the district as an area of concern for graduation rates.

“I am going to reassess my request for 100 percent graduation rate; what I really want to see is 100 percent positive outcome because I understand we will never get 100 percent of the kids to graduate with what the state deems a high school diploma,” said school board member Mindy Conn. Murphy said this would mean no “true” dropouts and having the kids be able to test positively to graduate.

On a positive note, since 2013 the large disparity in graduation rates between white, black and Hispanic students has gotten smaller. The gap in 2013 was 19 percent between white and Hispanic, and 37 percent between white and black. Today, the difference is 13 percent Hispanic and 18 percent for black students in comparison to white students.

Conn asked what could be done now to help the graduation rate in future years. “We can’t guarantee that if we add resources now that the numbers would jump in 2020,” Murphy said. “It takes time, students need to be addressed over time, and we can’t pick students that come into our system at any time.”

Positive outcomes can also be found at all three schools when it comes to at-risk student graduation rates since 2015. At Coral Shores the graduation percentage for those students rose from 25 percent to 50 percent, at Marathon it went from 41 percent to 81 percent and at Key West it rose from 42 percent to 58 percent.

In other school news: • Districtwide free school lunches post-Hurricane Irma have ended.

• The school year is tentatively scheduled to begin on Aug. 15, 2018.

• KWHS Band’s 17-year-old uniforms need to be replaced. The quote to replace them is $67,000.

• Sugarloaf employee housing task force discussed public-private partnerships to move forward with a housing project at Sugarloaf School. Conn requested updates of the project at each meeting.

• The school board is considering creating a formal district-wide homework policy that would include input from teachers, principals and parents.

he Upper Keys Sailing Club hosted a Moth Class Nationals Regatta Jan. 26-28. A total of seven foiling moth and four wasp-style boats participated in the event. Stronger than expected winds did deter some racers.

Started as small developmental dinghies, moth boats have increased in popularity in the sailing world thanks in part to breakthroughs that have, among other things, allowed the small boat to rise out of the water and seemingly fly. The boats are able to “fly” because of lifting hydrofoils and apparent wind created by the vessel’s design. Apparent wind is the relative wind experienced while in motion.

GEEK OUT Afterschool science program gets ‘hands-on’ GABRIEL SANCHEZ

reasure Village Montessori Charter School students may be a little brainier than usual this spring. The charter school is beginning a six-week afterschool science enrichment program on Feb. 6 with Plantation Key School science teacher and amateur astronomer Charles Fulco.

Fulco taught in the New York school system for years, before partnering with NASA and Andy Aldren, son of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldren, to write and develop curriculum to foster science literacy and inspire the next generation of Mars-bound astronauts. He also works part time for NASA with the Solar System Ambassador program.

The Montessori approach to education emphasizes scientific observation. Fulco’s lessons are a way to reinforce those principles while presenting students with new information from different fields like environmental science, biology, engineering and astronomy. During Fulco’s nationwide campaign to promote students viewing the Great American Eclipse last year, the science teacher said, he realized the role the outdoors played in exciting people to learn. He has the numbers to support this notion.

According to a study by the University of Michigan, 88 percent of American adults, roughly 215 million people, watched the solar eclipse in person or electronically. For comparison, that’s about twice the number of people who watched last year’s Super Bowl.

In his initial pilot lesson for the afterschool program, Fulco welcomed Aquarium Encounters’ Chance Ruder and Sarah Meng as guest speakers to teach students about marine mammal adaptability in different environments.

His upcoming lessons are based on learning activities featured in NASA lesson plans that are very hands-on, require thought, and are engaging.

Students can learn about the forces in motion during a shuttle launching when they construct and launch their own model rockets. Fulco says he plans on showing students how trigonometry can be used to determine the height traveled by the rocket.

When the group learns about solar systems, Fulco teaches students how to tell time using the sun, and even creates a solar oven that can cook food. His first life science lesson will show students how to make their own butterfly garden.

The science enrichment program begins on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 3:30 p.m.; 24 students are expected to participate in the program, which may continue after the scheduled six weeks if successful.

What advice would you give underclassmen? I would advise the underclassmen to follow your passions and take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to them.

ll eight Rotary Clubs of the Florida Keys have a focus on propelling local students into higher education and supporting them when they arrive. Last year alone, $100,000 in Rotary Club Scholarship awards were given to students graduating Coral Shores High School and Island Christian School. $45,000 more was awarded to previous recipients who returned needing more assistance.

For former recipients like Hunter Risher, the continued support has made all the difference.

Risher graduated from Coral Shores High School in 2013 with aspirations of studying medicine. After being accepted to Maryland’s Johns Hopkins University, Risher decided to major in cellular biology. Finally graduating in May 2016, Risher has spent two years as a research coordinator with neurologist Dr. Peter A. Calabresi, tracking “changes and atrophy” in the retinas of patients with multiple sclerosis.

A professor of neurology, Calabresi is the director of the school’s Multiple Sclerosis Center. The Yaleand Brown-educated professor studies mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroprotection. Retinas could play an important role in those fields, said Risher.

“Because multiple sclerosis is a disease of the nervous system, and the retina is also composed of neural tissue, we believe that it can be used as a helpful bio-marker for tracking how a patient is doing, as well as using it as an outcome to measure the efficacy of clinical approaches to managing the disease,” he said.

Risher specifically is researching a cancer drug called rituximab. He said he wants to see if the drug offers

more or less protection to the retina.

He’ll find out by measuring the rate of atrophy for the retinas over time with a device that quantifies volume and thickness of a patient’s retinas.

With his research winding down in the spring, his sights are now set on applying to medical school in June. Of the 15 to 25 schools he’s reaching out to, his top choices are the University of Maryland and the University of Miami.

“Oncology is something I’m really interested in right now,” said Risher. “I work for a neurologist in my current role, so I’m interested in that, too.”

Aside from medicine, Risher also has a passion for baking and cooking and said he makes a mean French toast. The most interesting experience he’s had since leaving home, however, is working as a patient advocate during the summer of his undergrad years.

His efforts were geared to helping patients from low socio-economic statuses gain access to basic needs. But service to others wasn’t a new concept to him.

“When I was in high school I was part of the Interact club, and I ended up becoming the president. Through that opportunity I was able to do a lot of service projects that I listed on applications applying for schools. It made a difference,” said Risher. “Every year I was in college I received money from the Upper Keys and Key Largo Rotaries, and it made a difference in paying for school. If not for them I would have twice as much student debt to pay off.”

He suggests students try to “diversify” their experience.

“You don’t know who could help you out in the end, or what could end up being an asset in the future,” said Risher.

Triples tourney helps hurricane victims

n order to raise money for victims of hurricane Irma, Founders Park’s Tiki Tennis held a triples tournament on Jan. 27 at park courts. Players of all ages and abilities competed in matches, with the winners advancing to the next round.

There were no losers, as all the proceeds collected during the event were donated to the Community Foundation of the Florida Key’s Hurricane Relief Fund and the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund of the Upper Keys.

Tiki Tennis instructors, coach Susie Jannach and Greg Pearson, oversaw the fun, giving pointers and keeping score.
