PRINT IS NOT DEAD Growth feeds our promise

E

arlier this week a report announced the demise of the Keynoter and Upper Keys Reporter as we know it, leaving a void in the Florida Keys that will be nearly impossible to fill. For more than 60 years their reporters have done an admirable, difficult and often thankless job of covering the news in the islands.

We have shared many professional and personal moments with the Keynoter and Reporter family over the years. And while we would often battle over competitive differences, we also served and lived together here in our tight communities we call home. We sincerely wish the best for our colleagues and will miss them, as their efforts made us strive to become a better publication.

And yet, with another publication retreating from a tangible “thing” you can hold in your hands, again we face the cliché we have heard for a decade: “Print is dead.”

Print is not dead. It is a living, breathing medium filled with creativity, information and entertainment.

The Keys Weekly Newspapers was born in a converted apartment back in 2003 as the Marathon Weekly. Since then, we have opened additional offices in Key West and Tavernier and our publishing group produces (on average) 112 pages per week in newsprint, more than 30 annual magazines — including the Florida Keys Hurricane Guide, dining guides, the Monroe County Annual Report, Tropical Living specialty guides and festival programs for the biggest events in the Keys.

Serving our community is what has helped us grow from a five-person staff in a makeshift space into a full-fledged publishing company with 16 employees — including two new full-time employees hired earlier this month. And owning homes, having children in our schools, serving on nonprofit boards, putting on events like the “Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards” and “Best of Marathon,” and participating in and supporting what matters in our community has, we believe, allowed us to recognize the delicate balance of hard news and community news needed here. It is not a secret formula, but it does require local ownership. Local participation. Local knowledge. And above all, a sense of local empathy injected into community journalism.

Across the country locally owned community newspapers are thriving — mostly under the weekly model, which allows for contemplative journalism outside of the realm of daily “top stories” that are read and just as quickly forgotten. Our reasons for growth and success are like many. Maybe it is because we must make the model work in order to support our staff and their families. Maybe it is because we realize the first objective is to serve our community — rather than to sensationalize it for short-term shock value.

The Keys Weekly is growing. And just as our print continues to grow, so does our digital footprint here and beyond. While white and black student graduation rates rose last year in Monroe County schools, the Hispanic graduation percentage fell last year. There are many factors, but one could be budget cuts in certain English as a second language courses being offered.

he overall trend looks positive across Monroe County’s graduation rates. “As the state is getting better, so is our district,” said Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability David Murphy, who was tasked with tracking the graduation rates over the past five years. “In terms of closing the gap, we haven’t done that yet, and that is one of the frustrations.” Since the 2012-13 year, Monroe County has dragged behind the state by an average of about 3 percent.

Last year, 27 students were true dropouts. However, students still enrolled, those who received a certificate of completion, received a GED or a special diploma are still included in the non-graduate rate. Together, those students number an additional 100.

Murphy reported a district success with closing the gap between white students and black students in overall district rates and emphasized the increase in black student graduation district-wide, with Key West High School’s percentage helping overall.

Murphy cited the ESE student population in the district as an area of concern for graduation rates.

“I am going to reassess my request for 100 percent graduation rate; what I really want to see is 100 percent positive outcome because I understand we will never get 100 percent of the kids to graduate with what the state deems a high school diploma,” said school board member Mindy Conn. Murphy said this would mean no “true” dropouts and having the kids be able to test positively to graduate.

On a positive note, since 2013 the large disparity in graduation rates between white, black and Hispanic students has gotten smaller. The gap in 2013 was 19 percent between white and Hispanic, and 37 percent between white and black. Today, the difference is 13 percent Hispanic and 18 percent for black students in comparison to white students.

Conn asked what could be done now to help the graduation rate in future years. “We can’t guarantee that if we add resources now that the numbers would jump in 2020,” Murphy said. “It takes time, students need to be addressed over time, and we can’t pick students that come into our system at any time.”

Positive outcomes can also be found at all three schools when it comes to at-risk student graduation rates since 2015. At Coral Shores the graduation percentage for those students rose from 25 percent to 50 percent, at Marathon it went from 41 percent to 81 percent and at Key West it rose from 42 percent to 58 percent.

In other school news: • Districtwide free school lunches post-Hurricane Irma have ended.

• The school year is tentatively scheduled to begin on Aug. 15, 2018.

• KWHS Band’s 17-year-old uniforms need to be replaced. The quote to replace them is $67,000.

• Sugarloaf employee housing task force discussed public-private partnerships to move forward with a housing project at Sugarloaf School. Conn requested updates of the project at each meeting.

• The school board is considering creating a formal district-wide homework policy that would include input from teachers, principals and parents.

emember that video that went viral in 2016 of the Gainesville police officer called to the scene of kids playing basketball too “loudly?” Instead of reprimanding the kids, Officer Bobby White joined the game and the moment was recorded on his dash cam. This simple and kind example of true community policing has become a movement, and has arrived in Marathon.

On Wednesday, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Basketball Cop Foundation and the Nancy Lieberman Charities staged a ribbon-cutting at the Marathon Rec Center.

The $35,000 worth of court and equipment replaces the aged sports stuff that was old even before the storm. The space is beautiful, and the kids love it.

“The kids are pretty excited, but to be honest, I’m really excited too,” said Anthony Culver, who runs the Marathon Rec Center with his wife, Diane. It provides after-school care for the elementary age children who are schooled right next door at Stanley Switlik Elementary. Culver himself has been there for 26 years — “Now I have the children of some of the children I started with.”

And while the new space is beautiful, the story of how it came to be is positively heart-warming. It started with a local Sheriff officer, ranged to the Basketball Cop Foundation founded by White (the guy in the video) and grew to include Nancy Lieberman Charities (more on her later). In the meantime, the effort picked up speed with the help of The Home Depot in Marathon and the City of Marathon.

The star of this show, though, is Monroe County Sheriff Office’s Sgt. James Hager. Originally from the Gainesville area, the officer has been in the Keys for four years.

When he was promoted to sergeant pre-storm, he was tasked with arranging a community service project for the squad. He picked kids and sports.

“I really appreciate the policing philosophy in Monroe County,” Hager said. “There is a real commitment to community with the cleanups and covering up graffiti.”

Hager started out with a phone call to Gainesville, his old stomping ground, asking Officer White for a

Kids who do not trust or respect the police are less likely to report being a victim of a crime and even less likely to come forward as a witness of a crime. It is a fact that kids that have no reason to respect the law or the Officers in their community are far more likely to commit juvenile crimes themselves. small donation of sporting equipment — nets, basketballs and footballs. After the storm, the squad grew the project’s scope. Hager and his squad decided to fix up the Marathon Rec Center with a new coat of paint, some new fencing and landscaping.

But when White learned about the Keys’ sad situation, he made a hard choice. He called up Nancy Lieberman and told her he wanted to pay it forward — the court that had been promised to the kids in Gainesville was needed more in Marathon.

Lieberman is known as “Lady Magic,” a nod to Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

She has played in the Olympics, World Championships and Pan American Games. She has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Currently, she is an assistant coach for the Sacrament Kings, the second female to hold that position in the history of the NBA. Oh, and when she was 50 years old in 2008, she made history as the oldest player in league history when she signed a seven-day contract with the Detroit Shock.

And so on Jan. 24, the group that had gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony was sitting on a brand new Dream Court It’s a special synthetic flooring pre-marked with court lines that is designed to be easier on the joints and last forever. Lieberman talked to the crowd about the power of sports and her faith. And she had a little surprise up her sleeve for Officer White.

“I’m going to make sure you get your court, too,” she said.

Lieberman then officially opened the court with a backwards over-thehead shot from center court. She nailed it on the first try. The crowd cheered and before the cries died down, the kids of the Marathon Rec Center had already plundered the box of new basketballs and were racing back onto the court to shoot hoops.

ugarloaf Key resident Bill Hunter filed to run for Monroe County Commissioner, District 2, which runs from the Seven Mile Bridge to Boca Chica Key and includes a small portion of Marathon. Commissioner George Neugent is retiring after 20 years of public service.

Hunter is the third Republican to file papers with the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections. The others are Charles Weitzel and Mararthon Mayor Michelle Coldiron.

“I am running for county commission to represent all of the Florida Keys from the perspective of someone who lives, works and strives to protect the character of island communities within the Lower Keys. This local perspective is vitally important as the county recovers from Hurricane Irma,” Hunter said.

Hunter and his wife Mary arrived in the Lower Keys in 2000 and bought a home on Sugarloaf Key in 2010. He owns a small business, Key Tel, which provides telephone and data networking services to area business. He is

Hunter said he has never served in an elected position, and his first foray into public service came about due to his association with the Sugarloaf Shores Property Owner Association. As public policy chair, it was his responsibility to attend the Monroe County Board of Commissioners meetings.

“It became, not quite a hobby, but a habit, and then a calling,” he said of his attendance. “I recognized that the commissioners and staff need to know what the residents are thinking. Every island in the Keys is different.”

He said his top priorities are residential quality of life, the environment, fiscal responsibility and sustainable tourism and business.

Hunter is currently a board member for Last Stand, and also was a member of the county’s Climate Change Advisory Committee.

“I helped to develop the Monroe County climate action plan. It was the first time the county had a comprehensive overview on the impacts of climate change, the biggest of which is sea level rise,” he said. “It’s a worthwhile study regardless of what you think about climate change and its causes, whether you are a believer or non-believer. Because we do have hurricanes and that information is very valuable when it comes to storm surge. We are killing two birds with one stone during the recommendation process.”

He also sat on the county’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. “In the Keys, we’ve been working on this for three decades and there is no silver bullet,” Hunter said. “What government can do is try to help. We need to look at all types of affordable housing and build it where it’s needed most — near where the employees actually work. I want to look at ways we can replace the affordable housing and the simplest solution seems to put it back where it was. Replace it with storm-resistant or modular homes. Put it back, but make it better.”

Hunter said it required a bit of persuasion to toss his hat in the ring.

“I am a grassroots Republican,” he said of his fiscal conservative beliefs. “I am not a politician. I am not part of the political power structure.”

Hunter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent four years in the service as a communications equipment technician. He has two grown sons.

unny, fun, a tad competitive, with a slight penchant for gambling and a rather infectious laugh: not the usual way to describe a government employee, let alone the court administrator for all of Monroe County. Native Floridian Holly Elomina is the top brass of judicial organization, making sure every single one of 6,000 pending cases will get its day in court.

A Coral Shores grad, Elomina went on to study criminology and earn a degree from Florida State University as well as develop a healthy obsession with college football (Go ’Noles). She started her career at the state’s attorney’s office before going on to deputy court administrator, and in 2008 she became head court administrator. So what does that mean? Well, post-Irma, it meant 80-hour work weeks getting our judicial system up and running, balancing eight judges, three courtrooms, family court, budgets — even having the first proceedings the Wednesday

after Irma with makeshift accommodations. (Note, there wasn’t even cell phone service yet.) There’s no messing with the president of Sunset Rotary, and two-time Rotarian of the Year, unless you happen to beat her in Vegas – ask Mike Tyson, whom she just met, where? Vegas…

Full Name? Holly Hodson Elomina.

Worst nickname? Big Mama.

Do you have a life credo or motto?

Treat people how you would want to be treated. I have a very low tolerance for people who think they are better than others.

Organizing the courthouse sounds like a big job. What is most challenging?

Most rewarding? The most challenging pieces to this job are coordinating efforts for three courthouses spread over 88 miles and providing the same level of services and programs to each geographic area. The most rewarding piece of this job is coming to work every day with amazing judges and employees who believe in the work we do.

Why were you attracted to study criminology? I have always been intrigued by human behavior and what makes a person tick. The master plan as a college freshman was to become an FBI agent, but as you can see, that didn’t pan out.

What’s a misconception about life at the courthouse? TV and movies sensationalize the way court operates. It’s honestly not as exciting and dramatic on a day-to-day basis as it appears.

Funniest courthouse story? There are plenty, but to protect myself, my co-workers and more importantly, my judges — I plead the Fifth.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Claire Dunphy of “Modern Family” — the sarcasm she shells out to her husband and kids is classic Holly behavior.

What is your nerdiest passion? Religiously watching “Jeopardy.”

What is your most treasured possession?

My children.

If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Follow my daughter around at school to see what is really happening to all that missing schoolwork and homework the “teachers keep losing.”

On what occasion do you lie? I believe in always telling the truth; however, I have on occasion underestimated my losses (or winnings) in the casino to my husband.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Poker, blackjack and roulette (see above).

If you could grant Key West one wish?

More green space to build parks and fields for our community’s kids.

What is your greatest fear? Flying. I love to travel so this becomes a bit of an issue.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Bobby Bowden.

My friends and family would describe me as … loud, funny, competitive and a bit clairvoyant.

PIGEON KEY ART FEST SET FOR THIS WEEKEND Livingston plays concert Friday night

D

escribed as “a big show for a tiny island,” the annual Pigeon Key Art Festival is set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3, and attendees can expect new elements added to the artistry on display.

As in the past, the festival is to transform the open-air Marathon Community Park into a tropically themed oasis of exemplary artwork in pottery, painting, glass, sculpture, photography, jewelry and more.

The show is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday — a departure from its past Saturday and Sunday format.

Additions for 2018 include a 6-9 p.m. Friday concert at the park featuring Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band.

Organizers also expect to expand the festival’s historical reenactments, period entertainment and educational programming to underscore the Pigeon Key Foundation’s important projects.

Pigeon Key is a small historic island beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge that housed workers constructing the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad in the early 1900s. It has appealed to artists from around the world who have captured its tranquil beauty.

Proceeds from the creative festival support the Pigeon Key Foundation, a not-for-profit organization established in 1992. The foundation is dedicated to educating the public about the historic, environmental and cultural significance of the Florida Keys and the tiny island, which suffered damage from Hurricane Irma in September.

ABOUT THE POSTER ARTIST Jessica Ann Hessing is a full-time artist living in Key Largo. Born and raised in the Florida Keys, her artwork is full of local inspiration.

She creates pieces that are all influenced by her love for the ocean, her educational background in marine biology, and most importantly, her desire to recreate the beauty she sees every day in the Florida Keys. She has been making a name for herself since 2009 when she really began selling her artwork in shows and events. Hessing typically paints with acrylics on canvas. She truly is a one-of-a-kind artist, painting with vibrant colors and thick, bold outlines.

New this year is a live auction slated for 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, at the park’s band shell before the evening concert. Original work by worldrenowned marine artists Wyland, Guy Harvey and Carey Chin is to be featured alongside artistry by acclaimed Florida Keys talents.

Other attractions planned at the expansive community park, located at MM 49, include an art raffle, T-shirt sales, food and beverage booths, a beer and wine garden, music and children’s crafts.

Admission for either day is $7 per person for adults and free for children under age 12. Attendees who purchase tickets for Friday admission can retain them and gain free return admission on Saturday. Guests also can present their tickets for half-price admission to Pigeon Key by boat during the week following the event. Parking is free at the Marathon Community Park.

Whimsy on a bottle Local artist joins the festival circuit SARA MATTHIS

O

n Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3, Tobe Creed will take part in her first art festival.

At the Pigeon Key Art Festival she’ll set up an array of glittering bottles that feature art and costume jewelry. She also has Christmas ornaments, tiny little treasure chests and bigger, framed work.

This is something that happened by accident, Creed will tell you, but it’s a Bob Ross sort of “happy accident.”

The pieces are filled with whimsy, capable of triggering a wide grin. Many of the pieces feature, of all things, pirates – a juxtaposition of sparkly jewelry, empty liquor bottles and marauders.

“I don’t know. I don’t know why I like pirates so much,” Creed said. “It’s funny. I guess I’ve always liked the sea.”

The bejeweled bottles started before she was given three 50-gallon drums filled with costume jewelry. Yes, that much. The previous owner had thought to sell his late mother’s collection of QVC inventory to be smelted for the value of the real gold plating. Jewelry is a bit of a weakness, Creed said.

“All you have to do is show me a little bling,” she said, smiling. “I’ve collected jewelry forever.” Her art studio is filled with drawers and bins of neatly sorted costume jewelry. She hopes to finish a few more pieces before the festival — including a large, two-dimensional framed work of a tall-mast ship.

Those are her more expensive pieces, which sell for between $300 and $400; the bottles range from about $50 to $100, and the jewelry boxes, treasure chests and ornaments are even less expensive.

Creed can’t tell you how much time she puts into each piece. “In fact, I’m trying to keep track of it with this pirate ship I’m working on now.” But it’s important for her to know, because her other job is selling real estate for Key Colony Realty. Before that, she was in the miniature business. She had licensing agreements with companies like Coca Cola and Hershey’s to reproduce perfect 1/12-scale accessories for dollhouses — tiny bottles of Coke and chocolate bars to rest on tiny little tables. She did that for 30 years, but also spent some time working on a mink farm.

Tobe Creed assumes the mantle of “artist” easily; she’s also a Realtor and once was in the “miniature” business — making accessories for doll houses.

The bottles are painted and then decorated with bits and pieces of old costume jewelry.

Creed’s work often features pirates.

She’s a woman of adventure, Creed. Which may explain the pirate thing. She attends plenty of pirate festivals and her stuff sells like sweet rum. She even makes hair accessories for the scallywags of the sea — strings of colorful beads with a handy hair clip at the top.

FLOATED AWAY The Pigeon Key Foundation had no easy way to dispose of the 300 cubic yards of debris left by Hurricane Irma on the tiny, historic island. The old Seven Mile Bridge is out of commission, and the boats that serve as ferry were too small. So, Marathon resident Don Rogers reached out to Marathon Sea Walls and Docks owner Randy Culmer. Using a 100-foot barge, the work crew spent days helping the foundation staff stack it with storm debris. “We are very grateful to Marathon Sea Walls and Docks, the barge crew, Don and Randy for all their support of the Pigeon Key Foundation,” said foundation Executive Director Kelly McKinnon. arlier this month, a federal appeals court dismissed a case against the city of Marathon, former Mayor Mike Cinque and former Planning Commissioner Ralph Lucignano for allegedly conspiring to devalue the estate of Joseph Ardolino, which included the Overseas Lounge property.

Ardolino’s family, represented by Richard Warner, sued in August 2014 after multiple attempts to sell the property were supposedly hindered by the city’s ordiance banning a liquor store within 1,500 feet of another liquor store. That ordinance was passed in 2006, the year after Ardolino died.

“This was a politically motivated lawsuit and has since been dismissed three times for lacking merit,” said Cinque. “I am glad the city of Marathon can finally put this chapter behind them.”

A

t Arlo Guthrie’s recent concert in Key West, he made a comment onstage about a Super Bowl memory from years past. Needless to say, this provoked a litany of audience responses from “Go Eagles!” to “Go Patriots!” to “Go (insert your favorite team name here)!” Not being a fan of the current and too-often recurring AFC Champion, I offered up, “Anyone but the Patriots!”

My outburst got a tiny amount of applause … and then a stern look from Guthrie himself, who replied, “You do know you have a stage full of Massachusetts people here?”

Properly chastised, I went back into the role of happy concert-goer and music fan. Seeing as this Sunday is Super Sunday v. LII, however, I’ve compiled a list of Prop Bets — these are things a person can actually place a bet on (but only in properly licensed gaming establishments and sports books, as our attorneys have advised us to say).

Here is the first, complete with odds: How long will it take for Pink to sing the national anthem? Over 2 minutes -150 • Under 2 minutes +110 • This will be measured from the moment she starts singing until the note “Brave” ends for the first time.

Perhaps even more important: What color will Pink’s hair be when she starts to sing the national anthem?

White/Blonde 5:4 • Pink/Red 2:1 • Blue/ Purple 5:1 • Brown/Black 7:1 • Green 3:1. Yes, you can actually place a bet on the anthem singer’s hair color.

Other Pink anthem bets include whether she will be airborne, if she will forget a word of the anthem, or if she will wear an Eagles jersey or say the word “Eagles” any time during her performance. And there is this important bet: who will be shown first on TV during the singing of the national anthem — Tom Brady or Nick Foles?

Our president figures in a couple of these prop bets: will he be mentioned in the telecast, and the over/ under on his tweets (it’s 5).

Seeing as Justin Timberlake is the halftime show, there are (understandably) a host of prop bets here as well.

What color will Justin Timberlake’s shoes be when he begins his halftime performance? White is the odds-on favorite, with black a close second. There

are plenty of other colors from which to choose (and waste money on) as well. Will he wear a hat? Will he cover a Prince song? Will any other members of NSYNC perform JOHN with Timberlake?

What color will Bill Belichick’s shirt be at kickoff? How many times will Tom Brady’s age be mentioned during broadcast? How many times will Gisele Bundchen be shown on TV? How many times will Carson Wentz be mentioned? Will Al Michaels refer to the spread on the game?

But there are even more important bets: Will Donovan McNabb’s vomiting incident from Super Bowl XXXIX be mentioned? And how many times will the Rocky statue in Philadelphia be shown during the broadcast?

Now that you have this list of possible ways to part with your hardearned cash, you are surely ready for anything in Super Bowl LII. Except maybe the commercials…

inds whipped up the crowd of more than 1,000 at the 11th annual Family Fun Day at Marathon Community Park.

Hosted by the City of Marathon’s parks and recreation department, it’s all hands on deck. Dozens of nonprofits and local agencies bring their best gadgets and gizmos to entertain the kids, and snacks — popcorn, sno cones, donuts and hotdogs — are dispensed liberally.

arathon High School celebrated homecoming this past weekend.

The festivities, originally scheduled for the fall semester, included a pep rally, basketball game with the crowning at halftime, a parade and game.
