ugarloaf Key resident Bill Hunter filed to run for Monroe County Commissioner, District 2, which runs from the Seven Mile Bridge to Boca Chica Key and includes a small portion of Marathon.

Commissioner George Neugent is retiring after 20 years of public service.

Hunter is the third Republican to file papers with the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections. The others are Charles Weitzel and Michelle Coldiron.

“I am running for county commission to represent all of the Florida Keys from the perspective of someone who lives, works and strives to protect the character of island communities within the Lower Keys. This local perspective is vitally important as the county recovers from Hurricane Irma,” Hunter said.

Hunter and his wife Mary arrived in the Lower Keys in 2000 and bought a home on Sugarloaf Key in 2010. He owns a small business, Key Tel, which provides telephone and data networking services to area business. He is retired from the Bell System.

Hunter said he has never served in an elected position, and his first foray into public service came about due to his association with the Sugarloaf Shores Property Owner Association. As public policy chair, it was his responsibility to attend the Monroe County Board of Commissioners meetings.

“It has become, not quite a hobby, but a habit, and then a calling,” he said of his attendance. “I recognized that the commissioners and staff need to know what the residents are thinking.

Every island in the Keys is different.”

He said his top priorities are residential quality of life, the environment, fiscal responsibility and sustainable tourism and business.

Hunter is currently a board member for Last Stand, and also was a member of the county’s Climate Change Advisory Committee.

“I helped to develop the Monroe County climate action plan. It was the first time the county had a comprehensive overview on the impacts of climate change, the biggest of which is sea

level rise,” he said. “It’s a worthwhile study regardless of what you think about climate change and its causes, whether you are a believer or non-believer. Because we do have hurricanes and that information is very valuable when it comes to storm surge. We are killing two birds with one stone during the recommendation process.”

He also sat on the county’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. “In the Keys, we’ve been working on this for three decades and there is no silver bullet,” Hunter said. “What government can do is try to help. We need to look at all types of affordable housing and build it where it’s needed most — near where the employees actually work. I want to look at ways we can replace the affordable housing and the simplest solution seems to put it back where it was. Replace it with storm-resistant or modular homes. Put it back, but make it better.”

Hunter said it required a bit of persuasion to toss his hat in the ring.

“I am a grassroots Republican,” he said of his fiscal conservative beliefs. “I am not a politician. I am not part of the political power structure.”

Hunter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent four years in the service as a communications equipment technician. He has two grown sons.

PRINT IS NOT DEAD GROWTH FEEDS OUR PROMISE

E

arlier this week a report announced the demise of the Keynoter and Upper Keys Reporter as we know it, leaving a void in the Florida Keys that will be nearly impossible to fill. For more than 60 years their reporters have done an admirable, difficult and often thankless job of covering the news in the islands.

We have shared many professional and personal moments with the Keynoter and Reporter family over the years. And while we would often battle over competitive differences, we also served and lived together here in our tight communities we call home. We sincerely wish the best for our colleagues and will miss them, as their efforts made us strive to become a better publication.

And yet, with another publication retreating from a tangible “thing” you can hold in your hands, again we face

the cliché we have heard for a decade: “Print is dead.”

Print is not dead. It is a living, breathing medium filled with creativity, information and entertainment.

The Keys Weekly Newspapers was born in a converted apartment back in 2003 as the Marathon Weekly.

Since then, we have opened additional offices in Key West and Tavernier and our publishing group produces (on average) 112 pages per week in newsprint, more than 30 annual magazines — including the Florida Keys Hurricane Guide, dining guides, the Monroe County Annual Report, Tropical Living specialty guides and festival programs for the biggest events in the Keys.

Serving our community is what has helped us grow from a five-person staff in a makeshift space into a fullfledged publishing company with 16 employees — including two new full-time employees hired earlier this month. And owning homes, having

children in our schools, serving on nonprofit boards, putting on events like the “Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards” and “Best of Marathon,” and participating in and supporting what matters in our community has, we believe, allowed us to recognize the delicate balance of hard news and community news needed here. It is not a secret formula, but it does require local ownership. Local participation. Local knowledge. And above all, a sense of local empathy injected into community journalism.

Across the country locally owned community newspapers are thriving — mostly under the weekly model, which allows for contemplative journalism outside of the realm of daily “top stories” that are read and just as quickly forgotten. Our reasons for growth and success are like many.

Maybe it is because we must make the model work in order to support our staff and their families. Maybe it is because we realize the first objective is to serve our community — rather than to sensationalize it for short-term shock value.

The Keys Weekly is growing.

And just as our print continues to grow, so does our digital footprint here and beyond. Today we govern two Facebook pages with more than 25,000 organic likes, an email blast that reaches tens of thousands, a web page that has exceeded metrics beyond our wildest imagination.

We promise there will be a print edition of the Keys Weekly available from the stretch to the Southernmost Point each and every week.

And we promise — print is not dead.

In fact, we are just getting started.

While white and black student graduation rates rose last year in Monroe County schools, the Hispanic graduation percentage fell last year. There are many factors, but one could be budget cuts in certain English as a second language courses being offered.

he overall trend looks positive across Monroe County’s graduation rates. “As the state is getting better, so is our district,” said Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability David Murphy, who was tasked with tracking the graduation rates over the past five years. “In terms of closing the gap, we haven’t done that yet, and that is one of the frustrations.” Since the 2012-13 year, Monroe County has dragged behind the state by an average of about 3 percent.

Last year, 27 students were true dropouts. However, students still enrolled, those who received a certificate of completion, received a GED or a special diploma are still included in the non-graduate rate. Together, those students number an additional 100.

Murphy reported a district success with closing the gap between white students and black students in overall district rates and emphasized the increase in black student graduation district-wide, with Key West High School’s percentage helping overall.

Murphy cited the ESE student population in the district as an area of concern for graduation rates.

“I am going to reassess my request for 100 percent graduation rate; what I really want to see is 100 percent positive outcome because I understand we will never get 100 percent of the kids to graduate with what the state deems a high school diploma,” said school board member Mindy Conn. Murphy said this would mean no “true” dropouts and having the kids be able to test positively to graduate.

On a positive note, since 2013 the large disparity in graduation rates between white, black and Hispanic students has gotten smaller. The gap in 2013 was 19 percent between white and Hispanic, and 37 percent between white and black. Today, the difference is 13 percent Hispanic and 18 percent for black students in comparison to white students.

Conn asked what could be done now to help the graduation rate in future years. “We can’t guarantee that if we add resources now that the numbers would jump in 2020,” Murphy said. “It takes time, students need to be addressed over time, and we can’t pick students that come into our system at any time.”

Positive outcomes can also be found at all three schools when it comes to at-risk student graduation rates since 2015. At Coral Shores the graduation percentage for those students rose from 25 percent to 50 percent, at Marathon it went from 41 percent to 81 percent and at Key West it rose from 42 percent to 58 percent.

In other school news: • Districtwide free school lunches post-Hurricane Irma have ended.

• The school year is tentatively scheduled to begin on Aug. 15, 2018.

• KWHS Band’s 17-year-old uniforms need to be replaced. The quote to replace them is $67,000.

• Sugarloaf employee housing task force discussed public-private partnerships to move forward with a housing project at Sugarloaf School. Conn requested updates of the project at each meeting.

• The school board is considering creating a formal district-wide homework policy that would include input from teachers, principals and parents.

T

he Keys Weekly Team is happy to welcome new Account Executive Stephanie Mitchell to the Key West office. A Missouri native, Mitchell came to Key West 16 years ago and fell in love with the island community.

Her career began at the Ocean Key Resort Spa, where she eventually became spa director. Switching it up, Mitchell then went on to Key West Seaplane Adventures, taking part in everything from plane navigation to tourist liaison. Along the way, she earned her real estate license and then joined Lynn Kaufelt’s team at Truman and Company. Recently, Mitchell was an executive assistant at the Hemingway Rum Company.

unny, fun, a tad competitive, with a slight penchant for gambling and a rather infectious laugh: not the usual way to describe a government employee, let alone the court administrator for all of Monroe County. Native Floridian Holly Elomina is the top brass of judicial organization, making sure every single one of 6,000 pending cases will get its day in court.

A Coral Shores grad, Elomina went on to study criminology and earn a degree from Florida State University as well as develop a healthy obsession with college football (Go ’Noles). She started her career at the state’s attorney’s office before going on to deputy court administrator, and in 2008 she became head court administrator. So what does that mean? Well, post-Irma, it meant 80-hour work weeks getting our judicial system up and running, balancing eight judges, three courtrooms, family court, budgets — even having the first proceedings the Wednesday

after Irma with makeshift accommodations. (Note, there wasn’t even cell phone service yet.) There’s no messing with the president of Sunset Rotary, and two-time Rotarian of the Year, unless you happen to beat her in Vegas – ask Mike Tyson, whom she just met, where? Vegas…

Full Name? Holly Hodson Elomina.

Worst nickname? Big Mama.

Do you have a life credo or motto?

Treat people how you would want to be treated. I have a very low tolerance for people who think they are better than others.

Organizing the courthouse sounds like a big job. What is most challenging?

Most rewarding? The most challenging pieces to this job are coordinating efforts for three courthouses spread over 88 miles and providing the same level of services and programs to each geographic area. The most rewarding piece of this job is coming to work every day with amazing judges and employees who believe in the work we do.

Why were you attracted to study criminology? I have always been intrigued by human behavior and what makes a person tick. The master plan as a college freshman was to become an FBI agent, but as you can see, that didn’t pan out.

What’s a misconception about life at the courthouse? TV and movies sensationalize the way court operates. It’s honestly not as exciting and dramatic on a day-to-day basis as it appears.

Funniest courthouse story? There are plenty, but to protect myself, my co-workers and more importantly, my judges — I plead the Fifth.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Claire Dunphy of “Modern Family” — the sarcasm she shells out to her husband and kids is classic Holly behavior.

What is your nerdiest passion? Religiously watching “Jeopardy.”

What is your most treasured possession?

My children.

If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Follow my daughter around at school to see what is really happening to all that missing schoolwork and homework the “teachers keep losing.”

On what occasion do you lie? I believe in always telling the truth; however, I have on occasion underestimated my losses (or winnings) in the casino to my husband.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Poker, blackjack and roulette (see above).

If you could grant Key West one wish?

More green space to build parks and fields for our community’s kids.

What is your greatest fear? Flying. I love to travel so this becomes a bit of an issue.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Bobby Bowden.

My friends and family would describe me as … loud, funny, competitive and a bit clairvoyant.

My autobiography would be titled … “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up.” I can never refuse … ice cream (I didn’t get the Big Mama nickname for nothing).

he American Red Cross celebrated its 101st anniversary of being in the Keys last weekend at Marriott Beachside Hotel in Key West. The event recognizes an individual or individuals annually who possess humanitarian qualities in the community. “I never thought I would get an award like this,” said Kate Miano, who was the 2018 recipient.

ikes, cars, dumbbells, kettlebells: Rashad Harper had it all, but has slowly been purging his training equipment on the yard sale pages of Facebook. The 29-year-old has decided to take his mixed martial arts training to the next level — professional.

“When chefs want to get better, they go to Paris, so I am heading to Asia to train with the best,” he said while packing his bags and mentally preparing to isolate himself to train for the next three months to a year.

He leaves Key West today for Thailand.

“I’ve come to a standstill here and I need to challenge myself.”

Harper, the 170-pound welterweight, has been training in jujitsu with the Police Athletic League’s Rich Thomas and at Big Pine Key’s Fight Sports gym. He’s also traveled to strict and

traditional mixed martial arts schools and dojos in the U.S. with teachers of Wing Chun, who taught him Chinese boxing, such as Dan Gilgorovic, whose training he says was a huge part of his last victory.

He has been in Key West since 1997 after moving to the Keys with his military family. “Although I have lived in many places, Key West is home,” he said. The pro-rated fighter will be missed by his many devoted morning beach workout friends.

He has always set his sights high and I have no doubt he will do amazingly well in his next adventure.”

His twin brother Dante is also a personal trainer in town and will help locals reach their goals in Rashad’s absence. Rashad will also continue training his clients online via his website rhmotivate.com. His Facebook page “RH Fitness” is also filled with motivational quotes and his online workouts.

“I love pushing my clients, but now it’s time to push myself,” Rashad said.

“They have been so supportive of this decision and I will miss them.”

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) acted remarkably in a remarkable year. For 18 years, the foundation’s Unsung Heroes Awards has honored individuals for outstanding community dedication but this year, they just could not exclude anybody.

No small feat as the foundation and Lower Keys Medical Center hosted a lunch at The Marriott Beachside on Jan. 26 for 75 organizations that provide innumerable services to the Florida Keys. The foundation worked with each non-profit and provided $1 million in relief post-Irma. It was only fitting that all who helped revitalize the Keys be celebrated.

“W

omen live longer just to finish the conversation,” says character Gabby, and it’s quite a conversation.

The newest play at the Red Barn Theater, “20th Century Blues,” is an in-depth, insightful and humorous look into the lives of four aging women and the entangled web of their life stories.

Written by Susan Miller, the play hits home and is witty and biting in all the right places. Danny, an acclaimed photographer (a passionate Annie Minors); Sil, a divorced Realtor ( a vivacious Marjorie Shook); Gabby, a worrier about her husband and animals (a sweet Peggy Montgomery); and Mac, a gay reporter losing her career to the modern age (an emphatic Deborah Jackson) engage in clever dialogue and face issues that are complex and intimate.

The four women met in a jail cell in the ’70s and Danny began to photograph the friends for decades.

During this particular reunion, Danny asks permission to exhibit the photos at the MOMA and receives unexpected answers. Their hesitation unearths an intricate example of the female ego. The characters’ lives are far richer than a

simple photo bringing up their past secrets, unfinished business and future fears. The play manages to capture the most conflicting part of women’s relationships with other women; they are affectionate but also can be distrustful.

“What are we the bearers of?” asks Sil. “Time,” responds Danny.

Therein lies the crux of the play, women looking back over time and talking about everything — careers, politics, aging parents, marriage, children, drinking, cancer, and lest we forget, plastic surgery. “Plastic surgery isn’t going to change the fact that every generation gets a turn. It’s just not ours any more,” says a sarcastic Mac. “These are people we don’t see portrayed very often,” said director Joy Hawkins. These remarkable women say what most women think. “I’ll be straight until menopause,” quips Gabby. Undoubtedly, the female audience will see more than just a little bit of themselves in the play.

he band Better than Ezra started in the ’90s, but a lot has happened since then for singer-songwriter Kevin Griffin. His musical career is more than his postcollegiate band that skyrocketed to the top of the charts. Better than Ezra’s first album “Deluxe, with its chart-topping hit “Good,” launched his career, followed by hits such as “Desperately Wanting” and “A Lifetime.” Since then, Griffin has some unexpected twists and major successes. Playing at the Key West Theater Friday Feb. 2, Griffin, who still plays with Better than Ezra, plays Ezra hits on his own, some solo hits, which will be surprisingly familiar, and a few popular covers.

“I’m a little tired; I just got off the plane from the Grammys,” said Griffin. He is heavily involved in the music business as a producer, singer and songwriter. More than 30 million copies of songs have hit the airwaves with Griffin’s name on them in some way. His first collaboration after Better than Ezra was with Meatloaf, Blondie, Taylor Swift and then some mega-hits came, like collaborating with Howie Day on “Collide,” James Blunt’s “I’ll Be Your Man,” and Sugarland’s “Stuck like Glue.” “Collide” became a favorite song for multiple television shows and “Stuck Like Glue” became the 11th most downloaded country song of all time by April 2011.

“With solo shows I get to go on tangents; it’s more conversational and reverent,” said Griffin. “As a musician, if you’re not U2, maybe people don’t realize the career you’ve had.” Even Better Than Ezra had another huge Spotify hit, “Crazy Lucky,” in 2014.

Griffin describes himself as a melody and lyric guy, but he attributes his success to inspiration from all music and he listens to everything. Some of his favorite bands right now are The Struts, Moon Taxi, War on Drugs, Ryan Adams and Cage the Elephant. “It keeps me going to listen and work with other artists,” he said. “All the different genres help form new music.”

And Griffin is no stranger to the Keys, as he has been part of the BMI singer-songwriter festival before and honeymooned on Little Palm, which he wishes a full recovery. A New Orleans native, Griffin has always appreciated the sister city laid-back, musical vibe of Key West.

“Playing music is about being optimistic, reinventing yourself and being inspired. Sh*t’s gonna happen so you gotta keep moving.”

ool, way cool, über cool, that’s how to describe Key West’s first ever Photography Festival, set for Thursday to Sunday, Feb. 8-11. Inspired by a festival in Peru that looked like a “cool photo ecosystem,” Quincy Perkins, local filmmaker and organizer of Key West Film Festival, knew Key West would be a perfect venue. With persistence, Perkins recently won a Canon grant (second time applying) and immediately set the festival in motion.

“This took six years to get going but we have three national sponsors: Clear Eyes, Magnum Foundation and Lens Pro To Go. Also, we have 42 volunteers and the majority of the events are free,” said Perkins. “Everyone, from Pulitzer Prize winners to locals to people who are walking by, can participate.” There will be a special sunset photo contest every night with prizes.

For one weekend, Mallory Square will transform into an interactive photography gallery. Four shipping containers will be reconverted into makeshift galleries, each with its own

theme and sponsor: 1) World Street photography 2) Magnum Foundation 3) Old Photos of Key West and 4) 15 contest winners’ submitted photos from around the world. Not only will audiences be able to view — for free — incredible photos, there will be lectures, gallery walks around town, coffee talks, parties and lastly, interactive contests.

Some of the highlights not to be missed will be lectures from Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Patrick Farrell, a ticketed event; Don Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer; and Key West’s Tom Hambright presenting “A History of Key West Photographers 1880-1970,” also a ticketed event.

Also it’s a chance to hear from local photographers such as Mark Hedden and Rob O’Neal.

“I think the idea of a photo festival has been at the edge of a lot of people’s minds,” said Hedden. “A lot of local photographers are in the same boat. It’s not always about sunset shots and weddings. Things like the Literary Seminar and the Friends of the Library lecture series have done a lot to show what a strong connection Key West

has to the literary world. I hope the Photography Festival does the same thing for photography. I hope it fans the flames of understanding what a deep and moving art it can be.”
