he 2017-18 lobster season might produce half the expected harvest because of Hurricane Irma, and stone crab numbers are likely to suffer as well.

“Harvest levels are returning to normal,” says Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association Executive Director Billy Kelly, but he estimates that commercial lobster fishermen lost “six to eight weeks of their best production” to the storm. In total, the 20172018 season could yield 2.5 million pounds or less of lobster, an estimate Kelly says is half the expected amount.

For stone crab numbers, Kelly reports poor production as well.

The numbers, compiled by Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, relate to the peak months of season — August, September and October.

The data showed that in August 2017, 816,229 pounds of lobster were harvested. September, the heart of season, saw 421,124 pounds hauled in.

October’s landing figures are 391,025.

For comparison, the August 2016 total was 1,076,426 pounds, September was 1,233,025 and October, 755,241.

While the October numbers are incomplete, FWCC officials believe that figures for August and September are near completion. January’s data update could alter October landings figures slightly, but FWCC officials say a large majority of the landings have been counted.

With very few landings and very few trips reported in November and December, landings data did not yet reflect either month in the December update.

Key Largo Fisheries Owner Tom Hill said Hurricane Irma hurt Keys fishermen in a lot of ways. Some had damage to their boats, or lost them altogether, and between boarding up homes and moving families, some had to leave traps in the water. Some commercial fishermen plan on continuing to fish leading up to March, but some have started to downsize and look to next year, he said.

“I’ve seen many lobster fishermen bring in their gear – maybe they’re not seeing production – so they’ll fish with less traps. Some may go down to around 500, 400, 300, maybe even less than 200 traps, and fish fewer days,” said Hill.

However, even with the local commercial fishing industry turned upside down for a few months, lobster prices haven’t wavered, and that bodes well for next year’s harvest.

Hill says lobster prices are dictated by global factors including the abundance and pricing of other species of lobster from countries like Australia, the Bahamas and South Africa. There are still more than two months in the season. It closes March 31.

The recent cooler weather may also have something to do with the scarcity of lobster in nearshore waters. According to John Hunt, Fish and Wildlife Research Institute’s program coordinator, the research of Florida State University professor William Herrnkind found that when winter cold fronts approached the waters of the Bahamas, the local lobster population would move to deeper water. Scientists have since theorized that the behavior is a response to change in barometric pressure and dropping water temperatures.

Two things happen to lobster when water temperature and barometric pressure changes, said Hunt. First, the change triggers lobster large enough to migrate to move from shallow nearshore to offshore waters. The offshore waters tend to be a little warmer and don’t go through as many temperature fluctuations. Second, when temperatures drop, lobsters become sluggish.

The storm, the cooler than usual weather and the affected fishermen add up to one reality: this lobster season has been one to forget. Still, Hill remains optimistic for the future and recalls times in the past that his father, Jack Hill, hauled in large amounts of lobster in the final two weeks of season.

“Like any fisherman, I anticipate next year is going to be better than this year, and tomorrow is going to be better than today,” said Hill. “You just have to keep an optimistic outlook to the future.”

mergency management officials and Monroe County administrators held six public meetings from Jan. 8-15 to gather feedback from Keys residents regarding Hurricane Irma. The openforum meetings were also a way for emergency staff and administrators to talk about some of the things done right and wrong, before, during and after the storm. County officials also announced the formation of all-volunteer groups for each area to debate areas of improvement in detail.

The meetings, which followed a similar format, were led by Monroe County Senior Director of Strategic Planning Kimberley Matthews and Monroe County Emergency Management Director Martin Senterfitt.

Islamorada’s meeting was centered on pre-storm planning and preparation, medical facilities, utility concerns, FEMA’s role in emergency management, reentry, supply and location of fueling stations, volunteer coordination and communication.

“I am very pleased that the county staff is soliciting input on Irma — what we did well and what we can do better,” said Islamorada Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Judy Hull.

“Getting the citizens and businesses involved in the solution is a great idea and I look forward to participating in the process.”

In Marathon, the main talking points included public communications, re-entry into the Keys, Boot Key, and shelters. In addressing shelters, Sheriff Rick Ramsay explained the challenges of housing citizens and emergency personnel into a space, the high school, not designed to serve as a permanent shelter, but rather a refuge of last resort. Ramsay followed up by stressing the importance of mandatory evacuation.

At the Marathon meeting, Senterfitt also discussed the idea of having pre-storm contractual agreements with private individuals, businesses and entities that could assist in immediate post-storm recovery.

The Lower Keys meeting drew a full room. Among those attending was Big Pine resident Tommy Ryan. Ryan, a retired New York City firefighter experienced in emergency management, called the meetings “productive” but had some suggestions.

“I personally feel they need to have more specific meetings for each item they talked about,” he said. “The one idea I totally disagree with is the concept the county has to leave the worst hit area to clean last. If they had done it in the beginning ,I think it would have been a different story.”

Housing, marine debris removal, and reentry were also discussed at the meeting.

“Our team attended each of these public meetings to ensure any concerns that came up regarding federal assistance would be quickly communicated to the congressman and appropriate agencies,” said Joanna Rodriguez, communications director for U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo. “The biggest takeaways were a general frustration with communication, reentry after the mandatory evacuation, and debris removal.” She said a new Emergency Operations Center seems to be one of the most actionable solutions proposed, as well as re-examining federal debris removal laws and pre-determining debris sites.

“T

his is definitely part of succession planning, not retirement planning,” said attorney John Wolfe. “Because I am not retiring.”

That point was one of the first Wolfe was clear to make from the conference room of his offices in Marathon with his new partner, Patrick Stevens.

“One of the reasons I made the move, besides my own career, was for the benefit of Marathon,” said Stevens.

“John has a wealth of knowledge and I’m excited to soak up as much as possible and keep on learning. Together we will build on that.”

Wolfe began practicing law in Marathon in 1997, when he moved to the Keys from Texas, armed with a law degree from the University of Texas and already more than 20 years of law experience. Stevens graduated with a law degree from Florida Coastal School of Law and opened his own practice in Marathon in 2014.

The law offices will continue to focus mainly on real estate transactions; however, land use will come into play as well. Wolfe is the attorney of record for the Monroe County Planning Commission and Stevens is a current member of the City of Marathon Planning Commission. Both said they believe strongly in community involvement and bringing their skills to help resolve community issues such as affordable housing or rebuilding after the hurricane. The practice also has a

strong handle on technology.

“We scan all our files, so if one of our clients calls up and asks for a document from a closing 10 or 12 years ago, we can access and send it instantly,” said Wolfe, adding that all of the firm’s title and banking work is handled electronically. “We have up-to-date software, anti-virus programs, firewalls and even use encrypted emails where necessary,” said Wolfe.

Because there are two attorneys, Stevens said, clients will always have access to legal advice.

“You get attorney time, and a fair amount of it,” said Stevens. “We strongly believe that our clients should have real contact with their attorneys.”

While one may take point on a case, both attorneys can serve any client.

“Our goal is for our clients to have a seamless experience whether they are dealing with Patrick or myself,” said Wolfe, “and our internal training is focusing on that.”

The partnership was formalized on Jan. 1, 2018.

Lori Longstreth Lori L. Baker Longstreth, 53, of Marathon passed away peacefully on Sept. 3, 2017, after a courageous 15-month illness. Longstreth was born on Nov. 29, 1963 in Zanesville, Ohio.

She was a 1982 graduate of Philo High School and was employed at Johnson’s Insurance Agency for 20 years. She also appraised for Monroe County and was last employed at Key Colony Beach Realty.

Longstreth will be greatly missed by her parents, Don and Kay Denbow; her husband, Randy, whom she married in 1989; her daughter, Morgan (Ryan Burns) Longstreth; siblings, Jamie (Curt) Clark, Susan (Tim) Altier, and Michael (Johnna) Denbow; her fatherand mother-in-law, Carl and Nancy Longstreth; brothers-in-law, Larry (Ann) Longstreth and Craig (Nancy Irwin) Longstreth; and sisters-in-law, Darla (P.J.) Longstreth and Debbie (Dave) Glass; very special friend, Lisa Joseph of Marathon; and aunts, uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews. Longstreth was preceded in death by her brother, Brady S. Baker.

She was a devoted Ohio State Buckeye fan and lover of college football. During the summers, she could be found enjoying the Valhalla sandbar off Marathon with a Mich Ultra in hand. She will be remembered as a selfless, determined, hardworking and lovable woman.

From ballad to blues to gospel to trop rock, his new CD, “Where I’ve Been,” is true to its name: It will give you an idea of all the directions Thurman’s music has taken him since he picked up a guitar at age 7.

Thurman’s musical experience ranges from a northern California songwriters’ group through a stint at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe to gigs in Marathon and the Lower Keys. (And, Key West, you’re on his radar.)

“This is probably the most diverse album I’ll ever put out,” Thurman said, “because I basically took all my stuff from the past, say, 30 years as a songwriter – mostly newer stuff, but some of those songs are very personal or definitely country. Some of them are not so jolly and happy.”

Go see him live, and you’ll get a wider sampling of his repertoire, with tunes from Bob Dylan to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to Kenny Chesney to Robert Palmer.

Thurman played regularly before Irma hit. Now, as he rebuilds his contacts and starts booking gigs, he rattles off the names of musicians who aren’t here this season.

In September, he said, “We all were starting to set up things and get ready for season and the storm hit,” he said. He knows musicians who lost some or all of their gear, and others who have decided there aren’t enough opportunities to play.

“I think it’s going to be until next year before it gets really back to normal,” he said.

Just before Thurman came to the

Keys, he lived in Nashville, the mecca for songwriters, with a job as a cook at the Bluebird and working on his songwriting skills. He also met Cory Young, with whom he developed a songwriting and performing friendship. Young convinced him almost four years ago to come to the Keys, and the two performed regularly here. Young is now based in Las Vegas. But Thurman wants to work in the Keys.

“An acoustic single or duo or small band that does a mix of music that includes some of the traditional Keys type music can actually play pretty steady,” he said, “if you’re willing to work at it.”

Thurman, like an increasing number of musicians, is harnessing technology. Listen to him sing Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up,” and suddenly you will hear steel drums. That’s his guitar synthesizer. He has a harmonizer that does just what it says: creates digital harmony as he sings. He can also “build” a loop while the audience watches: he’ll play 12 or 16 bars of a song and record that, then play it back as the rhythm track, over which he can layer other sounds.

“Now that I’m playing solo, I really yearn to have more sounds and styles than I can get out of playing just an acoustic guitar and singing,” he said.

At a recent gig at the Sunset Grille in Marathon, a sudden rain shower drove Thurman and his audience indoors, where there were plenty of distractions – a college football game on the television, groups of people dining, friends gathered at the bar.

“You have to come to grips with reality and face the fact that you’re not doing a concert,” he said. “Most of us musicians have a considerable ego and you have to be able to dial that down and say, ‘Hey, I’m out here, I’m having fun, and I’m in the Keys, I’m looking at the ocean, and I’m playing music and I’m getting paid!’”

ast Sunday, 140 basketball players, ages 8 to 18, took the court for their first game. That number is about 50 more kids than the normal turnout rate, and all get to play for free.

“It’s been a rough year with the hurricane,” said City of Marathon volunteer basketball coach Neil Cataldo, who runs a non-profit called MAYDEA, Marathon Association for Youth Development and Athletic Excellence. “With the kids being displaced from the hurricane and everyone tight on money, I didn’t want that to affect the turnout numbers this year.”

So, with donations from local businesses, MAYDAE (which includes Cataldo, Sean Kirwin and Linda Kruszka) collected the $3,000 it takes to run the 8-week program free of charge. It usually costs around $40 per player to cover the uniforms, equipment, and end-of-season awards.

“We were really hoping to get younger kids interested this year,” said Cataldo. “This was a good way to get their feet on the court.”

Cataldo, who owns Allgood Maintenance, has been involved with coaching younger kids for about 20 years and made the non-profit MAYDAE about three years ago to entice his customers to donate to local sports. “It was more beneficial to ask for money when the donations could be written off on their taxes,” he said.

Cataldo grew up on the Marathon High School basketball court and said consistency with the players is most important. “The kids who are playing for Coach Freeman now at the high school level, 90 percent of them came up through this program. And, they have had a lot of winning years under their belts lately.”

The non-profit donated a shooting machine last year to the high school and also helps subsidize other costs throughout the year for other programs and traveling student teams, like The Tropics and Outlaws.

“Every little bit of money we can help keep in people’s pockets helps,” said Marathon Parks and Recreation Director Jimmy Schmidt. “It is good morale as we adjust to the new normal.”

Take Stock in Children - Monroe Take Stock in Children provides a unique opportunity for deserving students from economically challenged households to escape the cycle of poverty through education.

The Take Stock scholar meets with a caring volunteer mentor each week, usually during lunch, and benefits from the guidance of a skilled college success coach through middle and high school. To remain in the program, the student is expected to maintain A’s, B’s, and C’s, good attendance, and good behavior each quarter, and continue to meet weekly with his or her mentor. The student will receive access to a Florida Prepaid college tuition scholarship upon graduating from high school. The scholarship covers all tuition and local fees towards the attainment of a bachelor’s degree.

IRM (Fair Insurance Rates In Monroe) is always trying to help. Navigating wind and flood insurance with changing policies and government requirements is difficult for any Keys homeowner. Funded in part by grants from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, the City of Marathon, and member donations, FIRM has been holding a series of free workshops tackling flood issues. This week the second series of workshops took place in Key West, Key Largo and Marathon, teaching the community the ins and outs of flood zones and the possibility of elevating homes.

Guest speaker Roderick Scott, of L&R Resources, presented an education program — “Hazard MitigationElevation 101.”

“There is a lot of work down here in the next five years,” said Scott. “Everyone has got to have an elevation certificate, there is too much at stake nowadays.” Scott’s company helped raise more than 36,000 homes in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. “Water wins all the time, so you have to have a plan.” Scott seemed hopeful about getting more supplemental federal grant funding to help residents elevate their homes, but urged everyone to write their congressman about it all the same.

Mel Montagne, president of FIRM, is encouraged by the response and hopes residents take advantage of the workshops. But for

Montagne, the biggest issue is the looming expiration of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that Keys homeowners with a mortgage MUST have. It was to expire on Sept. 30, but federal lawmakers put a stopgap extension in place then. “The government has been kicking the can on this one and hopefully we will hear this week,” said Montagne. If the program is reauthorized, it’s most likely to have a five-year term The NFIP is huge. Nationwide, there are 5 million policies, and 3 million of those are in Florida.

Monroe County has 30,000 flood insurance policies on the books. If the program expires, not only will it affect homeowners with existing mortgages required to have this flood coverage, but also the real estate industry and those seeking to buy and sell today. The lapse could delay or cancel “approximately 40,000 home sale closings per month nationwide,” according to The National Association of Realtors.

Congress must now reauthorize the NFIP by no later than Jan. 19, 2018. Results were not available at presstime.

ARTIST WHO LOST GALLERY TO IRMA WILL LEAD WORKSHOP AT LIBRARY

ocal artist Silvia Fontaine opened an art studio and gallery in Marathon in the months prior to Hurricane Irma, then lost the business due to the devastating storm. But now, she wants to give back to the community by leading a free art workshop at Marathon Public Library.

Called “Creating Realities Art Workshop,” the gathering will start Monday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. and continue weekly after that. Materials will be provided by the library.

“I think art is not a luxury but part of life,” said Fontaine. “I want to work to give my small knowledge and the opportunity for people to learn, express and enjoy art totally free. I think it is a human right.”

The artist sees the workshop as a place where all participants will bring their experience and create a project together or individually. Fontaine was an art teacher in Cuba for nine years and has a bachelor’s degree in art history.

Concert pianist coming to the Keys

J

i — pronounced Jee, like gee whiz kid — is a 27-year-old pianist hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “a gifted young pianist who is going places.” He has been praised from a young age for his musical presence and technical command. He has appeared as a soloist with dozens of U.S. Orchestras and the BBC Symphony. He’s performed at the Kennedy Center, Saint Martin’s Abbey church, La Jolla Music Society, San Diego’s Mainly Mozart Festival and many more.

In early 2016, Ji was the star of a national Android commercial titled Monotone, in which he performs Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” on two pianos, one that features the usual 88 pitches and one tuned so that each key plays middle C. (Watch it on YouTube!)

Ji-Yong Kim began playing the piano at the age of 5. At 10, he was the youngest pianist to win the New York Philharmonic’s Young Artist Competition, resulting in a performance at Avery Fisher Hall.

In 2017, he signed to Warner Classics as an exclusive recording artist. For his label debut, he has recorded Bach’s “Goldberg Variations,” to be released this week. His previous albums are “Bach Exhibition” on the Credia label (2012), and “Lisztomania” for Credia/Universal Music.

hat is your favorite period of music to play? I don’t know that I have a preference of era, per se, but Bach is my favorite composer. I do love the impressionist era, though. It’s not something I do well, so this is a case of wanting what we don’t have. But this era was one where people started playing with sound as a whole, by layering it.

Do you ever improvise? I improvise at least an hour or two a day while practicing, but that is considered taboo on stage. But I’ve started wondering about that just recently when I realized that I had been playing the wrong note in a piece I’ve played for a very long time. I discovered it when I was listening to someone else’s recording. If I had still been at Julliard, and my teacher had noticed that, it would have ruined my whole day. And while it’s important to recognize the musical structure we’ve built over the course of centuries, music theory … well, to some extent it’s JUST music.

Any place you’ve yet to travel? I visit a lot of places and would say I’ve been to every single state in this country. I like to learn about people wherever I go. In fact, it’s become a personal research project. I want to acquaint myself

with different kinds of people, with varied personal lifestyles — doctors or artists, wealthy or poor, people who grew up in the foster system.

What can you tell us about the album that drops on Jan. 19?

This wasn’t going to happen initially. I heard someone on the radio say the other day that “any creative process is not a finished process” and that rang true. Because it’s never done, you just get to the point when time has run out. But I changed my mind and spent time studying the “Goldberg Variations.”

Bach wasn’t just a choral master in a Lutheran church, he was more than that. He was trying to convey an emotion with all of his work. It’s a scary project because it requires an immense amount of imagination — it’s more than 60 minutes long and I can’t play it mundane. In fact, it tied back into my research project, when I was thinking about what all people need. The answer is empathy and empathy is something that is so rare these days.

I wanted to tie this message to the album, to communicate that through music.

Any modern pieces you like to play? Well, I guess electronic music. On a keyboard, I can create a whole song.

What kind of music do you NOT like? I really don’t like scream metal; I’m not a metal guy.

What’s the largest audience you’ve ever played for? 10,000.

Do you get nervous before a performance? No, no, no, no. It’s a calm.

But, my first festival gig of mainstream music, I was just dying. And the show went bad, too.

Will you spend a couple extra days in the Keys? Yes, it’s my birthday weekend. A couple of my friends are flying down and the plan is to just relax. The last time I was in the Keys I was very young — 15 years old, I think.

he Marathon Chamber of Commerce hosted its monthly chamber after hours networking event at Marathon Marina and RV Resort.

Food was provided by the adjacent Lazy Days restaurant with Islamorada Beer Company beer. The night provided the perfect sunset to tour the marina and resort with local friends, and meet some of the visitors staying on the property.

What advice would you give underclassmen? Don’t be afraid for middle school and high school because teachers prepare you for the next grade as long as you pay attention.

SPEEDY ‘RUMORS’

he rehearsal schedule is really, really condensed. In all, the cast had fewer than seven rehearsals to bring Neil Simon’s “Rumors” up to scratch for the performances set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20 at Marathon Community Theatre.

But the audience shouldn’t fear.

It’s coming together quite nicely!

“We had two weeks from ‘git to go,’” said director Devin Clarke. “Everybody in the cast is very talented, and I feel very comfortable. For once, actually, I’m not worried.”

Any breaks the actors took from rehearsal were to ease their aching sides.

“This play is hysterical,” said Abby Haddock, who plays Chris.

“The first couple of read-throughs we had to stop because we could not stop breaking character for laughing.”

The play is a farce about the deputy mayor of New York City, who accidentally shoots himself in the ear. Apparently. Since he doesn’t regain consciousness (or appear on stage), that’s a guess. But the ensuing farce of arriving guests who try to keep the secret from one

“The opening scene is a really rapid-fire, what’s-going-on situation,” said Haddock. “My character is panicking, trying to keep everything undercover.

“It’s a little more dynamic than a typical, static stage reading,” said Clarke.

This is not Haddock’s first appearance on the stage. In fact, her first role at MCT was a reading of another Neil Simon play — “Barefoot in the Park.”

Oh, and the man who plays her opposite this role, Dale Coburn, was also her husband in that show.

“It’s the second time we’ve been married,” Haddock said, laughing. “Oh, and in ‘Cabaret’ I was dating his wife.

We’re keeping it all in the family.”

Haddock said the quick-paced nature of the rehearsals made for a very tight-knit ensemble and what promises to be a good night for the audience.

“The time crunch really focused us.

Our rehearsal (Tuesday), sounded like we’ve been practicing for months,” she said.

The show is set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20 with curtain at 8 p.m.

150 gather for environmental event

M

ore than 1,000 years of fishing experience was represented during an impressive gathering of 150 fishing guides on Jan. 8 at an event hosted by Captains for Clean Water, the Fort Myers-based environmental nonprofit.

Included was a range of guides: the newly minted, the nearly famous, old-timers, and even retired guides.

They were gathered at the Islander History and Discovery Center in Islamorada to understand the latest turn of events in the saga of the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir, recently signed in to law under Senate Bill 10.

The Everglades Foundation and Bonefish and Tarpon Trust were on hand to untangle the science behind the South Florida Water Management District’s modeling of the EAA Reservoir that was presented to the Legislature on Jan. 9.

Dr. Tom VanLent, senior scientist with the Everglades Foundation, made it clear that from his perspective, the proposed district models were untenable and would not allow adequate cleansing for water stored before being sent to the Florida Bay. Organizer and host Captain Daniel Andrews addressed the crowd saying, “We, as fishing guides, need to gather our voices to speak out on this issue.

We have a window of time to get this reservoir right and we need to engage.”

Andrews and his group Captains for Clean Water are intent on spreading the message to local, state and federal policymakers: that fishermen care about this issue and need an EAA Reservoir that works for all three estuaries: St. Lucie, Caloosahatchee and Florida Bay. His team, in conjunction with the Herman Lucerne Foundation, is organizing a plan to help the guides easily engage with their policymakers to express concerns about Everglades restoration and specifically the EAA Reservoir.

In a question-and answer-format, panelists – Richard Trotta with the Herman Lucerne Foundation; Bill Horn, board member of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust; Captain Steve Friedman, founding board member of Florida Bay Forever and commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association; and Captain Benny Blanco, Captain Daniel Andrews and Captain Chris Whitman from Captains For Clean Water – explored all aspects of Everglades restoration, Florida Bay improvement, activism and what role each guide needs to play in spreading the message of restoration.

“We are all ready to work on this issue. Our livelihood depends on it,” said Captain Steve Friedman, commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association. “We know the condition of the Bay, we want to see it improve, and we know we have to get involved to make it happen.”

or a law with fewer than 400 words, ordinance 104.62 causes a lot of headache for the City of Marathon, its residents and business owners.

The law governing food trucks has been a subject of debate for years. The last attempt to modify it happened back in 2015, when the planning commission made a recommendation to expand the hours of operation. It was never officially adopted, however, and

the council abandoned the issue when the only food truck — Cocomo’s — closed its doors and motored out of town.

Now the City of Marathon may very well figure out its food truck law before the trend passes out of fashion.

The issue resurfaced on Jan. 8, when Marathon Councilman Steve Cook suggested a workshop. It’s set for Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at Marathon City Hall.

“I would like to de-regulate a lot of it,” said Cook.

As it stands right now, mobile food vendors can only remain in the rightof-way for 10 minutes, such as the case for an ice cream truck, or in one spot for two consecutive hours during a 24hour period. Chris Lordi of Irie Island Eats said that’s not nearly long enough

“It’s impossible. Personally, I’m here every morning at 7 a.m. to do the prep work to open at 11 a.m.,” he said. Lordi is one of two food trucks that operate consistently in Marathon; the other is Nenis, located just a block or so away.

The law also requires the food truck or trailer to be removed from “public view” at the end of the business day. Cook said that part of the current law should stand.

“Trucks need to move at night and go away. A closed food truck doesn’t add to our community character or charm,” he said.

Lordi, who owns a concession trailer that is pulled by a pickup, questions the logic.

“I just don’t understand the rationale,” Lordi said. “If it can be in public view during the hours of operation, what is the point of moving it when it’s closed? Do we take the things home with us? Pay rent on a second lot?”

In the past, the council has been adamant that food trucks should not compete with brick-and-mortar restaurants – which, the council points out, pay higher costs such as rent and taxes. Lordi doesn’t argue with that, but says it’s all relative.

“Restaurants have air conditioning and liquor licenses,” he said. “I can’t compete with that. Although my cost of operating a food truck is less than a restaurant, my profits are also scaled.”

WHAT WOULD KING SAY?

Decades after the civil rights movement, what have we learned?

O

n Monday, we celebrated Martin Luther King Day and remembered the struggles of the American civil rights movement. In a land where “all men are created equal,” there was (and sadly, still is) a large segment of American society that was significantly less equal. Racial discrimination had been institutionalized by state constitutions, disenfranchisement, school segregation, Jim Crow laws, and white and colored “separate but equal” facilities in restaurants, theaters, water fountains, restrooms and public transportation.

The 1954 U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling that segregated schools were unconstitutional in the “Brown v. Board of Education” case is marked by many as the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement.

The murder of Emmett Till, the arrest of Rosa Parks for not giving up her bus seat for a white man, and the first efforts at school desegregation in the South awakened a nation to the injustice that was happening every day.

So many sacrificed so much in their attempt to achieve equality.

Martin Luther King Jr. became the most noteworthy spokesman and figurehead of the civil rights movement, winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his call to non-violent civil disobedience. The 1965 Voting Rights Act and the 1968 Civil Rights Act made it through Congress and were signed into law, sadly necessary to institutionalize the equality of all people that was already enshrined in the Constitution.

Fast forward to today, and what has changed? While progress has been made, there is a dangerous backslide happening all around us.

Racists and bigots who hid under rocks and inside caves have returned to the public arena, spouting their vile ideas. Our American president recently called predominantly black nations in Africa (as well as Haiti) s***hole countries and wondered why we couldn’t get more white European immigrants from Norway.

And on Martin Luther King Day (it doesn’t get more ironic than this) a 39-year-old man who was brought here from Mexico by his mother 30 years ago and has a wife and two children who are American citizens

In what world is this the right thing to do? What moral authority can justify ripping a hard-working husband and father away from his wife and children? When 10-year-old Jorge Garcia was brought to the United States all those decades ago, he didn’t bring drugs. He didn’t bring crime. And he certainly wasn’t a rapist.

There are people who should be deported. And our borders need to be secure. But this is a perversion of anything remotely resembling justice in 21st Century America.

We are a nation of immigrants, made stronger by our diversity. The fact that this unnecessary deportation happened on Martin Luther King Day should give good people everywhere no small amount of heartache. King once said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” He also said, “The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.”

Under current law, Jorge Garcia may be barred from coming back to the United States for 10 years. Our American society needs to speak with a voice that can’t be ignored and bring Mr. Garcia back to his family … and ensure no more American families are ripped apart by inhumane policies.

Guthrie family, singing legends, coming to Key West HAYS BLINCKMANN

t’s rare that the family business is folk singing but it’s just a way of life for the Guthrie family. Spanning generations, social movements and influencing singer songwriters for almost 80 years, the Guthries have built the framework for American folk music. Still going strong, the Key West Theater will host Arlo Guthrie, at 70 years old, along with his son Abe and daughter Sarah Lee for their Re:Generation Tour Jan. 26 and 27.

The night will be filled with the family legacy of storytelling, bits of lore and history, as well as some of the greatest folk music crafted.

“I grew up chasing Dad’s bus as it left the farm to tour. I always wanted to be on the bus,” said Sarah Lee Guthrie, Arlo’s youngest daughter and musician. “Now the circle is unbroken, and to have generations up on stage, it’s phenomenal and I am so grateful.”

The foundation of the Guthrie music was instilled in American culture by Woody Guthrie, Arlo’s father and Abe and Sarah’s grandfather. In 1940, as an alternative to “God Bless America,” Woody penned the famous “This Land is Your Land” that still resounds today.

Woody become the most influential folk singer, working with Pete Seeger and eventually inspiring a young Bob Dylan. Growing up with his father’s music, Arlo made it big in his own right in 1967 with his satirical, counterculture hit “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” that was 18 minutes long and tackled the Vietnam draft, American blind justice and littering. His biggest Billboard hit was his rendition of “The City Of New Orleans.” Later, Guthrie started one of the first indie labels, Rising Son Records, and has appeared on television with recurring roles in two major network television series (“The Byrds of Paradise” and “Relativity”), and feature films “Alice’s Restaurant” and “Roadside Prophets” (1992), and has authored three children’s books.

Since Abe and Sarah Lee grew up surrounded by music, the family legacy seemed inevitable. Abe joined his father’s band in the ’80s as a producer and keyboardist and Sarah Lee has recorded multiple albums of original music for two decades.

“The stage is a sacred space for us,” said Sarah Lee Guthrie. “Watching our father, we know what a powerful tool music is. He is one of the last great storytellers and he can bring a whole room together.”

Arlo and Sarah will be trading off on songs, his and her originals as well as some family gems. “We like old school theme with instrumentation, such as Dad playing the banjo, harmonizing and telling stories,” she said. “We’re blue collar singers. It’s a blessing being a folk musician without the pressure of mainstream.”

T

he Monroe County School Board met on Tuesday at Coral Shores High School to discuss the testing calendar for students and take the first glimpse into next year’s budget.

Testing calendar for students: Monroe County School District and Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability David Murphy asked for an extension to the testing calendars from the state due to lost instructional time due to Hurricane Irma. Most tests were extended by a week across Florida, but Monroe County was offered opportunities to push writing, reading,

and science additional weeks. The issue is that if testing is done late, then the school’s “state grade” will come back late and the testing will coincide with high school AP testing.

“When we talked about this initially with principals there was hesitancy because of the late reports, but after the principals talked to their leadership teams, all agreed that they would like to test as late as possible,” said Murphy. “The principals will have the flexibility to do what they think is best for the students.”

Board member Ron Martin agreed.

“We are honoring what the building leaders wanted; they are the guys and girls in the trenches,” he said.

added that responses to modify the testing schedule usually go unrecognized. “Perhaps there is some empathy for our students and teachers this year,” he said.

Board member Andy Griffiths said the board should send a thank you letter to the state for the leniency.

Three different prognostications were presented to the board by Executive Director of Finance and Performance James Drake. In all, the district needs to add somewhere between $1.8 million to $2.9 million to the budget. “The state keeps reducing its support for the district,” said Drake.

“We need something a little better than the past couple years,” said Porter. “The value goes up a little every year since 2012, but the value will be

back where it was in 2006 for the 20182019 budget. Just because the value goes up doesn’t mean that the district would end up with more money because the state can roll back the local required effort or LRE.” Since the request was prepared Aug. 3 before Hurricane Irma, Drake said the data doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. The new assessment will be made Jan. 23. “We don’t have a good idea of the effect of Irma on school taxable values,” he said. “But, after Wilma, our taxable values skyrocketed.”

The property appraiser will give a certified estimate on July 1; last year’s was $27.5 billion and the new estimate is expected to be $29.4 billion. “Wow, it took 12 years, but we are back where we were before,” said Griffiths, referencing the fall of property values after the recession.

in the case of lost mobile homes, the assessment is more on the value of the land; and in the case of other damaged homes, improvements will be made, making them also worth more.)

Staff at Florida Department of Education expect that Miami-Dade, Broward and Hillsborough are significantly under their enrollment estimates, meaning a lot of the state dollars will go to the under-enrolled counties.

Orange and Osceola counties’ enrollments are up. Eventually the averages will self-correct.

“In our county, most of the value is in land,” said Drake, adding that about 60 percent of the homes are not homesteaded in Monroe County.

Therefore, the brunt of the money comes from investment homes, second homes, and commercial property.

“This is where being a 90-percent county helps us, that’s why we generate more funding than similarly sized districts,” said Drake.

Monroe County is almost always

the highest funded on a per-student basis in Florida, mainly because of the cost of living. “Some counties are not very rich,” said John Dick. “We are a 90-percent county, which means we are a rich county from our tax base and a lot of our local money goes into our schools.”

The district’s school board budget meetings will begin March 5.
