UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / JANUARY 12, 2018 During a December Tavernier Community Association meeting in which Monroe County officials listened to resident’s concerns about Harry Harris Park and marine debris, among other things, County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy lauded the previous advice of one of her colleagues. County Commissioner Danny Kolhage, Murphy explained, had advised the County during his time as Clerk of Court to have at least $30 to $40 million in operational reserves in case of a hurricane.

“We always have, and that’s what’s going to save our bacon,” concluded Murphy about the remaining efforts to clean and restore Upper Keys stretches of unincorporated Monroe County roads. So the Weekly asked…

As for the county, Dietrich said, “I’ve found people illegally dumping twice from the mainland, so I don’t necessarily think more money is the right answer. Maybe next time we need to prevent people from dumping to keep some of those related costs down.”

NATURALIST TO SPEAK AT GARDEN CLUB Roger L. Hammer, an award-winning professional naturalist, author,

botanist and photographer will speak on Tuesday Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at the monthly meeting of the Garden Club of the Upper Keys at the Francis Tracy Garden Center, MM 94 Bayside. His presentation will be on attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to Florida Keys gardens. In 1979 Hammer discovered a population of Florida atalas on Virginia Key — a butterfly reported as “presumed extinct” in 1965. Roger reared larvae for five years and released them in Broward and Miami Dade County preserves. The discovery was made public by National Geographic in 1985. Hammer also has discovered two species of native orchids that were new to the flora of Florida, and is credited with discovering the first pair of Bahama woodstar hummingbirds in North America. In its first two years, the boat show was held at Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, but because of damage caused to the resort property

by Hurricane Irma, the venue had to be changed this year. After some searching, organizers decided Island Christian School Campus at MM 83.4 bayside was the best alternative.

“When Hawks Cay Resort had to shut down, we had to make a choice. Everyone leading it all got together, and for a moment we debated not doing it,” said Island Christian School founder, Pastor Tony Hammon. “But because nearly $100,000 of our budget comes from the boat show, we thought it was crucial in our efforts to keeping students, families, and teachers.”

Hammon expects the boat show to return to its original venue on Duck Key in 2019.

This year’s show will feature 10 boat dealers, showcasing more than 50 vessels ranging in style and length. Four of the Keys’ top fishing guides will hold seminars that will cover topics to ranging from dolphin to swordfish (see page 16).

Half-day fishing trips, resort stays, restaurant gift certificates, engines, and more will be available to bid on during the three-day silent auction.

Onsite, more than 20 vendors will be retailing nautical/fishing gear of all types. Hungry guests can sample food from five different vendors, and for kids, organizers have acquired two bounce houses.

Show hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15. Admission is $10.

T

he boat show has plenty of grub options this year from some of Islamorada’s favorite spots. It’s the first time Shrimp Shack has been a vendor at the boat show, and owner Jill Jahn says she’s more than happy to be part of the school’s fundraiser.

“I’ve lived in the Upper Keys my whole life. I didn’t go to Island Christian, but I had a lot of friends that did. I think that they offer a good education and in our small town we always love to pitch in and help. It’s all about good karma.”

After Hurricane Irma ravaged the Lower Keys the restaurant owner quickly reopened and for three weeks brought food to first responders and affected Lower Keys residents on Ramrod, Summerland, and Big Pine keys. Twice, Jahn said, fellow shoppers picked up the grocery bill when they found out she was shopping and cooking for first responders. So, in the grand scheme of things, she said helping at the boat show is all part of projecting some good into the world.

Jahn is planning on preparing three “grab and go” snacks for guests.

One, the Carolina Pulled Pork Sandwich; two, the Loaded Mac & Cheese (which absolutely tastes as good as it sounds); and three, the restaurant’s famed Shrimp Fritter appetizer.

The Shrimp Fritters, and Jahn, were featured on an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” with Guy Fieri in 2016. The fritters are made with chunks of shrimp, peppers, onion, and remoulade sauce.

For an expert opinion on the fritters, the Weekly turned to Key West native Matthew Boa. Boa’s grandfather and family were part of the city’s “Pink Gold Rush.” Having grown up on the docks in a time when the shrimping industry flourished in Key West, Boa’s qualifications are legit.

“First of all, their shrimp and grits are on a different level. As for the Shrimp Fritters, they have chunks of shrimp in it, and it’s nice to eat a fritter where you can actually taste shrimp chunks in it. Fritters traditionally have minced mystery meat in them – you can’t taste if there is actually conch in it,” said the Key West shrimp buff, turned street artist. “I’m also a Southern brewed sweet tea snob, and they have the best sweet tea here.”

For those curious to know, Jahn will be giving briefings on how to make the fritters at Shrimp Shack’s booth.

Job a perfect fit for White

I

sland Christian School welcomed new Head of School Terri White this academic year, and the pairing couldn’t have been a better fit for both.

White and her husband, David, moved to the Keys last summer after White accepted the job. David, who has been a pastor for 30 years, also teaches high school Bible and musical theater at the school in Islamorada. They have a daughter, Ashley, 27, an events manager for Marriott Hotel in Greenville, South Carolina, and son, Joshua, 19, who is attending Full Sail University in Orlando.

White received a master’s degree in educational leadership from Grand Canyon University and began her journey into teaching about 20 years ago. She started teaching at the elementary level – home-schooling her two children for a few years – and has since worked as both teacher and principal in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Florida. What are some of the new programs and events happening at Island Christian School this year?

ICS will have its first musical revue production this year. Three new electives were added for our 10th-12th grade students: Experiential Learning Program, Environmental Science, and Musical Theater. Other upcoming events include this weekend’s Boat Show, Grandparents Day, and our Expo, which is our open house event for enrollment for the upcoming school year.

You’ve promoted professional development programs and skill building among faculty. How does the influence of skilled teachers reveal itself in students? The biggest “reveal” is watching students become authentically engaged and connect to their learning in relevant ways vs. being compliant, passive learners who demonstrate their understanding only through paper and pencil.

What makes teaching this generation of students unique? Their aptitude toward technology. Students discover more information at a quicker rate with less attention to intensive research. The positive side is that it allows students to take ownership of their learning. However, the negative side is that students tend to instantly believe everything they read, especially on social media. Teachers are now finding themselves having to teach students how to decipher fact from fic-

tion. Thus, the importance of developing critical thinking skills.

Why did you choose to work in a private school versus a public school? In one word, “Freedom.”

Freedom to teach from a Biblical worldview, share my faith, and guide students to discover their God-given potential. Freedom from being bound by state-mandated curriculum.

Where do you see Island Christian School in five years? A school community that has grown more into a collaborative learning environment.

A place where students are given more opportunities to discover their God-given design, develop their skills, talents, and achieve academic excellence, and devote themselves to the Lord, with the ultimate goal of reaching their potential and influencing their world for Christ.

Your career started off in physical therapy before you followed your passion into teaching. What were some dream jobs you considered as a kid? Becoming a marine biologist or a doctor.

When you were a student, which class was your favorite and which class challenged you the most? History was my favorite; math was my challenge.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment? Writing a year-long 4th grade history curriculum several years ago for a private school in Georgia, which they still implement to this day.

What’s the biggest difference between vacationing to and living in the Keys? Conveniences. When vacationing, there is no need to go to the mall. However, living here is another story.

Exploring national parks and hiking make up some of your favorite memories. Which national park is next on your bucket list, and why?

Yosemite, because it is one of the few national parks out west that I have not been to yet.

What is the last movie you saw in theaters? The new “Jumanji” with Dwayne Johnson.

What song would you consider your ‘theme song?’ “Climb Every Mountain” by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

If you were invisible for one day, where would you go and what would you do? I would go to the White House … to see what really happens there.

What’s one secret you’d never tell? Well… I will never tell.

Have a motto? In private school education, my motto comes from a desire to see that students “Develop a Love for Learning and a Love for Jesus.”

If you could have lunch with one Biblical figure whom would it be? Deborah. I would want to glean insight from how she maintained her determination, focus, and confidence as a leader in spite of her circumstances during those times.

What is the biggest lesson your faith has taught you? That just because I cannot see it doesn’t mean it will not happen.

he 13th annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride wound its way through the Keys this past weekend, starting on a tour of the Upper and Middle Keys on Friday, then a tour of the Lower Keys and Key West on Saturday, and ending with a swim with the dolphins on Sunday. Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP Literature in my junior year. I learned how to comprehend written works better, not just summarizing them but critical thinking and insight to analyze their meanings.

We also wrote a lot, which is definitely helpful.

What advice would you give underclassmen? Give your teachers the proper respect, no matter how you feel about them. If you first show deference, that opens the door for a very positive and close relationship.

That’s important at a small, close-knit school like ICS. What do you hope to be remembered for at ICS? I hope the club I founded remains in the coming year.

Also, I hope to be remembered as someone who serves wherever they are needed, and shows Christ-like love and kindness in the process.

What are your plans after high school? College, to pursue at least a bachelor’s degree. In what and where I’ll go, I’m unsure still. I’m choosing between my top four schools.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? Pictures of my cat, a flash drive with news articles, and a letter describing my life now.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? Start a career that benefits others, get married, and own a home.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Probably not, but who knows where God will take me! I love the Northeast, so hopefully I’ll live there at some point.

aygrass Bluegrass Festival’s most anticipated musical act, Billy Strings, is set to rock the amphitheater at Founders Park on Sunday, Jan. 14.

After wrapping up a very busy 2017 with a New Year’s Eve show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, Strings said from his Nashville home, Florida doesn’t sound like a bad change of pace.

William Apostol, also known as Billy Strings, grew up with his father Terry Barber feeding him a healthy diet of bluegrass by legends Doc Watson and Bill Monroe. He picked up how to play guitar – he also plays banjo and mandolin – by ear, and in high school even played in a metal band called To Once Darkened Skies. Metal is still a big influence in his style of play. And his musical palette varies from Canadian death metal act Cryptopsy to Grateful Dead.

It was six years ago when Strings set out to make it playing bluegrass music, and by early 2016, his passion finally became a viable career option.

“I always knew that my future was in music; it just didn’t seem realistic a few years back,” he said. “I was burning the candle at both ends working at a hotel and playing gigs. It got to a point where my body said ‘no.’”

So he moved to Nashville and surrounded himself with talent.

“I was trying to find my other three Beatles,” said Strings.

The lineup for the Baygrass festival has Billy Failing on banjo, Florida native Jarrod Walker on mandolin, and filling in on bass, Adam Chaffins. Royal Masat, who normally handles bass duties, is meditating on a beach somewhere in Thailand, according to Strings.

In September, Strings debuted his album “Turmoil & Tinfoil” and it skyrocketed up the Billboard bluegrass music charts to No. 3.

Strings attributed much of the album’s success to the time he’s dedicated to touring. Strings has been playing about 200 gigs a year for the last four years. With such a busy schedule, he’s only at home for three days at a time before leaving again, but says he appreciates visiting historic venues and sharing the stage with some of the greats.

“Four years ago, I’d be playing for like 10 people on some corner in Vermont. The next time I’d go it’d be 20.

Eventually I was going to back places and it would be in the thousands,” said Strings. “I think that’s been the reason I’ve gotten such good feedback by local DJs and radio stations. I’ve toured every part of the country and put in the time. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 people or 10,000, I’ll try to blow those 10 people’s minds.”

his year’s Island Boat Show features fishing seminars from four of the Keys’ best captains, who will be revealing the tricks and techniques pros use when fishing yellowtail, dolphin, swordfish, shark, tarpon, reef fish and baiting.

Capt. Rich Tudor, one of the more recognizable personalities in the Keys’ fishing scene, said the seminars are a great way to learn some of the methods to catch fish when the guy next to you isn’t.

Alongside Capt. Tom Rowland, the two rank as one of the top competitive inshore saltwater fishing teams around, and together co-host NBC’s “Saltwater Experience” out of Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. Tudor will be conducting seminars all three days of the fundraiser, and will cover a range of topics that include tarpon fishing, yellowtail fishing, and bay and gulf fishing.

His yellowtail seminar can benefit anglers at any experience level.

“Some of the things I’ll be talking about will be which lines and leaders to use, chumming techniques, finding the right locations to fish, and tips on how to catch some of the bigger ones,” said Tudor.

Tudor, whose favorite fish is always the “best available,” said hauling up 25-inch yellowtail snappers is not uncommon.

When pressed for a hint on hooking larger yellowtail, he simply replied, “Guess you’ll just have to attend the seminar.”

Capt. Sam Milazzo is slated to cover swordfish and dolphin fishing.

His discussion will cover topics that include setting the rig, responding to bites, and sealing the deal.

“You have to put your time in,” he said. “Those guys who are constantly putting up pictures of swordfish go constantly. When it comes to fishing, there are so many variables, especially sword fishing.

I was 0 for 40 on hookups before I learned the right techniques.”

He said those techniques will improve anybody’s chances of pulling up a swordfish.

“The way you respond to the bite once you get one can up your catch ratio big-time,” said Milazzo.

he third annual Island Boat Show’s silent auction will sell more than 70 items with a total value of nearly $20,000. Auction items are available all weekend to bid on.

“What a great way to kick of 2018,” said organizer David Makepeace. “We really need to take our hats off to the guys offering these fishing trips. Each and every one of them offered up their time this year and did it for the kids. It just shows what kind of community we have during these tough times.”

Here’s a preview of some of the items:

FOOD More than 20 local restaurants have put $25 to $50 gift certificates up for bidding, including Lazy Lobster Seafood Restaurant, Keys Bite, Twisted Shrimp, Tower of Pizza, and Lorelei.

One-hundred dollar gift certificates for Green Turtle Inn Restaurant, Kaiyo Grill & Sushi, and Ziggy & Mad Dogs will also be available for auction. FISH Up for auction are five backcountry fishing charters and four offshore charters. The half-day trips range from $450 to $900 for offshore trips. Some of those offering trips are Capt. Skip Bradeen of Blue Chip Charters, Capt.

Richard Black of Blackfly Charters, and Jeff Pursley of Island Time Offshore and Backcountry fishing. The fundraiser’s featured trip is a two-day saltwater experience with Capt. Rich Tudor. The bidding for the two-day adventure starts at $2,000.

MERCH Merchandise available for auction includes a trolling motor, outboard engine, paddleboard, fishing-related items, fine art by Pasta Pantaleo, and jewelry from DePaula Jewelers. Also up for bidding is a two-night resort stay at the Courtyard Marriot in Marathon.
