arathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron filed papers Monday to seek a seat on the Monroe County Commission. She will campaign for the District 2 seat currently held by George Neugent, who is retiring after 20 years of public service.

“The first thing I want to do is reassure all of Marathon that I will continue to serve our city’s needs and interests as I campaign for the county seat,” she said. “I think this is an opportunity to serve a broader section of the community in the Keys.”

Coldiron said she wants to continue to focus on the Keys as a place where families can raise their children while also balancing the needs of the environment and tourism.

“I believe Marathon is the heart of the Keys, but I also believe that the other parts of the Keys need to be just as strong,” she said.

On Monday, Neugent endorsed Coldiron’s candidacy.

“I don’t think that I know of anyone, and I’ve served with at least 14 different commissioners, who have prepared themselves as Michelle has to move into this position,” Neugent Michelle Coldiron said. “She understands the role of an elected official in a legislative position. She brings integrity and public service to the table and she has the energy and vibrancy to do a great job.”

Coldiron is married to Greg Coldiron and has one adult daughter, Mallory, who also lives in Monroe County.

In August, Coldiron bought a home on the other side of Overseas Highway in Marathon to meet the districting requirements for eligibility. She was elected to the Marathon City Council in 2016. She plans to fulfill her three-year term and, if elected to the Monroe County Commission, assume that seat one week later.

While he intends to step down from public service, Neugent said he has no desire to retire.

He said he has been approached by some businesses and nonprofits, possibly to be a consultant. “I’m going to keep my options open, but I certainly want to continue to help unincorporated Monroe County and the municipalities continue their recovery from Hurricane Irma.”

One other candidate has filed for the seat with the Monroe County Elections Supervisor: Charles Weitzel (R).

Lenore Baker withdrew from the race earlier this week and John Baker left a voice message with the Weekly announcing his intention to withdraw.

Charles “Chuck” Weitzel is a certified public accountant and property owner who lives on Big Coppitt Key, also within the district 2 geographical boundaries. He said he owns a percentage of Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island. While he has never held elected office, he said he has served as the Worshipful Master at three local Masonic Chuck Weitzel lodges.

“I’m looking for another challenge,” he said. “I think I can put some of my financial talents to use with my CPA background to help make decisions that affect all homeowners and residents for years to come.”

Weitzel said he moved to the Keys from the Philidelphia area to take advantage of the quality of life, and time spent on the water fishing and diving.

He bought property in 1980 in Key West and moved to the Keys fulltime in 1995.

“I want to protect the Florida Keys; it’s the reason I’m here,” he said. He also said he is currently searching for a campaign manager who understands the political process. “I am not a politician. What I am is someone who is good at setting goals and objectives, meeting them, working hard.”

he Florida Keys Astronomy Club’s guides will present “Evening with the Stars” at Crane Point on Saturday, Jan. 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The program begins with a brief introduction by Elizabeth Moore and Jay Elliott, followed by a hike through “the planets” stationed along the path, to the Crane House viewing area. Here you will have opportunities to view the crescent new moon, the Great Orion Nebula, the Andromeda galaxy and much more with the aid of 8- and 12-inch telescopes and binoculars. The Hubble space telescope and the International Space Station are expected to be visible.

This program requires that participants be able to walk a gravel road for a half-mile; no transportation will be available to or from the Crane House during this program.

Admission is $6, with children under 6 admitted free. All participants must arrive by 5:15 p.m. and gates will be closed at 5:30 p.m. Please dress for outdoor nighttime weather. No pets are allowed due to the use of telescopes and other equipment.

NO MORE CASH DEPOSITS? BANK OF AMERICA POLICY STARTLES SOME LOCALS

ank of America instituted a new policy in December. Namely, it won’t accept cash deposits from a third party. For example, it would be impossible for a mother or father to deposit any amount of cash into an adult son or daughter’s account without being a cosigner on the account.

“It’s done to reduce the risk from cash transactions involving people not authorized on an account,” said Matthew Dailey, a spokesperson for Bank of America. He did not provide an example of a specific risk.

There are six Bank of America branches in the Keys — two in Key West, and one each in Marathon, Tavernier, Key Largo and Ocean Reef. According to online reports, Chase and Wells Fargo banks are taking similar steps. Other local banks are not.

First State Bank CEO Karen Sharp said banking practices are changing because of technology, but some of the larger institutions seem to be forcing changes to customer behavior.

“What we like to do at First State Bank is to add more delivery channels to our customers that are more convenient, but not restrict them,” said Sharp. “It may be more convenient for our customers to use a mobile banking smartphone app that lets them make a deposit on Sunday, or drop by the branch on Tuesday and do it in person. Having choices, that’s what is important for us to offer our customers.”

While Bank of America still accepts other methods of third-party transfers into accounts — mobile payment transfers, checks or money orders — the cash deposits are no longer accepted. Because there is no dollar limit on the cash deposit, it’s possible some banks are seeking ways to lessen the burdens institutions face when dealing with cash, whether that’s extra security measures or even the regularity of armored transport. In the past, some major banks have created new revenue streams by making drive-through services free, while charging a fee for the very same lobby services.

First State Bank allows cash deposits from third parties, especially when it comes to “charity” accounts set up to benefit individuals facing a medical crisis, or nonprofits during the holidays. Naturally, neither the bank nor the account holders wish to publicize the account numbers, for fear of fraud, and so the public wishing to donate can simply approach a teller.

“We set up hundreds of those,” said First State Bank’s Angie Walterson.

Those who wish to deposit cash into a First State Bank personal account are best served by having not only the account holder’s name, but also the account number. In cases of a very common name — John Smith, for example — the banks

$9,999.00 The “$9,999.00” rule has nothing to do with the newest banking trend about disallowing cash deposits and therefore triggering a report, or an investigation, into a cash deposit of more than $10,000. That rule, instituted in 1970, generates a “completely innocuous” Customer Transaction Report (CTR), according to a local banking official. The trouble arises, she said, when a customer attempts to disguise the cash infusion by making multiple deposits at various branches, or some other type of chicanery. That can instigate a SAR — a Suspicious Activity Report. It’s the nature of the deposit, not just the amount, that regulators investigate. “No one cares about an $11,000 deposit,” she said.

and the depositors want to ensure accuracy. And sometimes customers have more than one account, or an account deemed “dormant” from lack of activity.

There’s one other legitimate reason for banks not to accept cash deposits — “money mules.” Just like “drug mules,” these people are witting or unwitting dupes in a money-laundering scheme. This is more prevalent in Europe, although it has popped up in the U.S. It’s more common that this a completely online transaction, although some mules will visit banking centers to deposit or withdraw cash that is then forwarded to the crime lords. Here, scammers usually target either university students on a temporary visa or those who respond to “work at home” job advertisements. The scammers require personal banking account numbers. Willing or informed participants provide the information and keep a percentage of the deposit.

Unwilling participants could provide their banking information and have a personal account completely cleaned out.

“Caveat emptor” applies not only to selecting the bank with the best practices and services, but also to arming oneself against the increasingly savvy tech scams that are abundant.

“Money Mules” are witting or unwitting dupes in a moneylaundering scheme, increasingly common in online transactions in Europe.

According to Renato Marrero of the Florida Department of Transportation, the debris-hauling contractor will be finished clearing debris out of the right of way by the end of next week.

“We will be done by the middle or end of next week,” Marrero said.

The district maintenance engineer of the FDOT District 6, speaking at the Marathon City Council meeting on Jan. 9, characterized the cleanup as the “fourth pass.” He said there are “two or three” trucks hauling debris and the contractor might add one or two more next week.

While appreciative, the council still had questions.

Marathon Councilman Mark Senmartin wanted to know where the debris is being hauled.

“We are taking it south of the 7 Mile Bridge,” Marrero said, “and storing it there until the site in Homestead reopens.” Marrero did not elaborate on why the debris site in Homestead was temporarily closed.

The FDOT representative also said the crews would be picking up the entire piles, no matter if some debris had slipped onto private property, and that crews are also charged with coming back to pick up the smaller pieces.

“We might provide some help,” said Public Works Director Carlos

Solis. “I want to send out the water trailer to clear off some of the sidewalks that have turned black from the debris.”

For business owners and those in the tourism industry, the removal of debris from the U.S.1 corridor couldn’t come soon enough.

“Obviously, we’re excited. Our highway is the first thing visitors see when they come to the Keys,” said Marathon Chamber of Commerce CEO Daniel Samess. “We are visually dominant creatures and this final cleanup helps our recovery physically, psychologically and economically.”

One of the larger debris piles was located in front of Bonefish Bay Motel & RV Sites. Owner Mark Fleer said he’s relieved to have the garbage gone.

“I’m happy. It looks like we’re open instead of still under construction,” he said.

The pickup on the gulfside of the bike trail on Grassy Key was conducted by the City of Marathon, not FDOT. Using Grubbs contractors, the city got the green light from the state Department of Environmental Protection to clear the environmentally sensitive lands and remove hurricane debris that washed across the highway from the oceanside. That included the historic, yet tiny, home that floated off its foundation. Lindsey said he initiated the action when FDOT definitively outlined its responsibilities that did not include that area.

“We wanted to target areas that we knew FDOT wouldn’t clear,” said City Manager Chuck Lindsey. “The City of Marathon wants to be done with cleanup at the same time FDOT finishes.”

At the meeting, Marrero said the signal outages in Marathon are a separate and planned update. He had no information on when the traffic lights would be fully functional.

Grace Jones center grateful for grant Dear Editor: The Grace Jones Community Center’s board of directors, management, entire staff, students and parents of students, would like to thank the Ocean Reef Community Foundation for their wonderfully generous grant from their Florida Keys Hurricane Response Fund, to help us get back on our feet after Hurricane Irma.

Grace Jones has been in existence in Marathon, Florida for more than 50 years and has provided State of Florida-licensed and APPLE Certified daycare and after-school care for thousands of children of hardworking Monroe County parents.

Grace Jones, along with many valuable local nonprofits, could not survive without the financial support of donors and foundations like the Ocean Reef Community Foundation. It is great to see how the community comes together when there are important and immediate needs such as hurricanes or other crises. Matt is an amazing, special human being, in many ways. He manages the Keys Cable park and is transforming the park into a beautiful place to visit. There is so much depth about Matt, a letter can’t do him justice.

‘THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED TO DO’ Shelter manager looks back, ahead SARA MATTHIS

T

ara Vickrey’s interest in animal welfare, and her role as mom to pupper “Sadowski” who was run over by a car, collided on the same night. It was 2011 when a stray dog was run over on the Sadowski Causeway on Key Colony Beach.

At the time, she was a vet tech with Marathon Veterinary Hospital. Not only was the animal injured in the accident; it was clear, Vickrey said, the animal had been neglected if not mistreated before that incident. Sadowski had a multitude of issues — mange, fleas, and overly skinny.

“It just clicked, that this is what I needed to do,” she said. “I basically showed up at the Marathon animal shelter soon after and literally banged on the door so they would let me in,” she said, laughing. The animal shelter campus is located on Aviation Boulevard behind the airport.

On the eve of the Winter Olympics (see story, page 17), the animal shelter director reflects on the plight of animals in the Keys, her recent loss, the shelter and more.

Where did you grow up? I was raised on the West Coast, Huntington Beach to be exact. My dad was in the U.S. Navy, but I always vacationed with my family in the Keys.

(Note: Vickrey is the granddaughter of the late Dick Ramsay, a former Marathon Councilman, and Thea Ramsay; Sheriff Rick Ramsay is her uncle. Her mom, Beth, is running for the Key West Utility Board.)

When did your interest in animals begin? Well, one of my first jobs right out of college was with the aquatic industry, trying to raise specimens in captivity. But we also explored fragging corals and other subjects.

When did you move to the Keys? In 2007, MOTE Marine was beginning an aquarium project at the Eco Discovery Center in Key West. I volunteered with them. Then I worked for the Turtle Hospital for three years.

When did you take over the management of the Marathon animal shelter? In January of 2014.

What are some of the shelter’s successes? I have to say it was the day in 2015 we joined forces with the Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (FKSPCA), headquartered in Key West. They are a wonderful organization and have so much experience and give us so much support.

It is the largest not-for-profit dedicated to animal welfare in the Keys, with a service area that ranges from MM 0 to MM 70.

BETTER THAN EVER Hurricane Irma did a number on the FKSPCA Marathon campus. About the only thing that survived intact was the almost-new “catio.”

All of the outdoor dog runs were destroyed and all the shade trees were blown over. But a tour of the campus today shows things look better than ever. Really.

Thanks to the help of a group of volunteers, Rescue Rebuild, the entire outdoor area has been rebuilt. According to the shelter, the group even fundraised the $20,000 needed for materials during the two-week rebuild. Spacious dog runs are covered with shade sails and each features a little cot.

There are quarantine kennels and even an enclosed run for bunnies. The serenity of the campus is marked by wagging tales, and NOT a cacophony of desperate barks.

What else is new? Oh! The catio!

Have you seen it? It’s a huge indoor/ outdoor enclosure for cats that I learned about at a conference in Jacksonville. It’s such a simple change that has such a huge impact on the cats’ quality of life. There are 40 cats living there in harmony.

How many animals are currently at the shelter after Hurricane Irma? Right now, we only have three dogs and about 40 cats for adoption.

Interestingly, about 45 percent of our animals were adopted after the storm by the families that fostered them through the event. (The shelter was completely evacuated.) Lots of people just fell in love with their animals. However, we boarded many animals after the storm for people whose homes were destroyed. In fact, we still have some animals that belong to families still living in hotels or crashing on someone’s couch.

How many animals do you have, personally? Unfortunately, to my great sadness, Sadowski just passed away. Because she was in a wheelchair, she was a full-time job. But she was my soul mate; we were very connected. But all of these animals in the shelter are on my heart.

What is one easily corrected canine or feline (mis)behavior? We get a lot of calls about dogs that are constantly escaping and running loose.

Most of these animals are not spayed or neutered. Having your pet spayed or neutered helps curb the animal’s urge to roam!

he gala is canceled, but the Bar Olympics are on. This weekend’s fundraiser for the Florida Keys SPCA is wildly different than last year’s. In place of a fancy party, the Marathon animal shelter has invited teams from local bars to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics Battle of the Bars and Dog Games. It’s set for Saturday, Jan. 13 at Faro Blanco’s Lighthouse Grill.

But first, tests of skill and courage for dogs and owners. Beginning at 10 a.m., there will be a “tennis ball lottery” — where animals fetch numbered tennis balls for prizes. Then, the “temptation plate” challenge, with the top prize going to the canine who can resist the longest before devouring successive delicacies piled on the plate before them. And, of course, the “kiss off” — a test designed to gauge a pup’s affection for his or her human.

“We just couldn’t wrap our heads around the idea of having a fancy gala this year. The community is already hurting,” said shelter director Tara Vickrey. “We decided to break up our fundraising efforts into smaller, more frequent events.”

At noon, the challenge for local service industry employees begins. Who can tap a keg the fastest? Run the fastest holding a loaded tray? Local restaurants and bars are encouraged to sign up a team of employees for the competition modeled after the wildly popular Battle of the Bars annual event in Key West.

The event is a fundraiser for the Marathon campus of the FKSPCA. As a contractual service provider for Monroe County, the group must also raise funds on the side to maintain the same level of care — about an additional $100,000 every year. In addition, this year Vickrey wants to raise more money to start a spay and neuter clinic, possibly a mobile operation.

Mark your calendar for the upcoming “Paws in the Park” dog walk on Key Colony Beach set for Feb. 24, and the third annual miniature golf tournament at Boondocks on April 7.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am a member of the swim team, band, Mathematics Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Relay for Life. I enjoy being involved in these activities because they provide me with an outlet to pursue both my academic and extracurricular passions.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Ms. Heyl’s calculus classes have helped prepare me for the rigor of college coursework. There is little room to slack off in her classes since the material is challenging and she holds all of her students to such a high standard.

What advice would you give underclassmen? I would advise underclassmen to start thinking about their plans for the future. It’s important to consider college and career options early on so you have a plan when it comes time to start college applications.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MHS? I would like to be remembered by faculty and students as someone who worked hard to attain academic success.

Some of the culinary student’s winning dishes were Red Velvet Cheesecake with Oreo Crust, S’mores Tartlette, Pomegranate Lamb Lollipops, Bacon Lobster Rolls and a Mango Key Lime Parfait.

“I’m a competitive person. I love this type of thing. Plus, being the only high school from here going against restaurants and hotels is good for the kids to see other things going on in the biz. You put your best foot forward and at the end of the day we’re still comrades in this game.”

“It’s a friendly competition,” she said. “We get to taste each other’s food and catch up. Yes, we are all in it to win it, but at the end of the day we do it for the MARC House.” Manso’s inspiration this year? “ I will be cooking a typical northern dish with a Key West twist that will warm you up; I’m hoping for cold weather.”

et ready to pull the guayabera out of the closet, light a cigar, and slam some bones on Saturday, Jan. 20 for the second annual Sunset Rotary Manny Madruga Domino Tournament at Southernmost House in Key West.

“We were friends and leadership classmates,” said Sunset Rotary’s Randy Acevedo, the tournament’s coorganizer with Donny Elomina. “Manny had so much integrity and gave himself to the organizations he was involved in and he is very much missed in Key West.”

Madruga was the Chief Assistant State Attorney when he died in 2016.

The tournament funds Key West Sunset Rotary’s Key West High School scholarship for a student going into a legal field, as well as suicide awareness and prevention organizations.

This year, the tournament will boast 21 tables, rather than the 16 last year. Thirty-six of the 42 team slots have already been filled. “We are organizing a side game to start around 8 p.m. so those eliminated can buy back

into a game,” said Acevedo.

Last year, more than $6,000 was raised from the tournament in Madruga’s honor.

Madruga was president of Leadership Monroe County when Mary Stella went through the program and she served on the board with him under his “exceptional leadership.” She plans on playing again this year.

“Playing in that tournament was really a special experience, to see how everyone in the community who loved and respected Manny put it together,” she said. “It was well organized and a lot of fun.”

Although she touts herself as a novice player, only learning how to slam bones a month earlier on a trip overseas, “winning our first three matches and losing to Jon Crane felt really good; we are coming for you this year,” she said.

RECREATING HISTORY ‘1776’ comes to Waterfront

O

ne of the largest and most challenging productions ever undertaken locally debuts this month at the Waterfront Playhouse.

Twenty-five actors and nine musicians will take to the stage of the Waterfront to present the musical “1776.” It will be directed by Danny Weathers, with Vincent Zito acting as musical director and conductor.

“As I was putting the season together last year, I kept thinking the show was too big, too much of a risk,” Weathers said. “But the words coming out of these men who lived almost 250 years ago had such resonance and impact, especially in our bitterly divided times, that I ultimately felt it was too important not to do.”

The musical recounts the summer of 1776 and the gathering of the Founding Fathers – and their bickering, wasting time and refusing to compromise – before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“1776” premiered on Broadway 50 years ago to glowing reviews and multiple awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, over “Hair” and “Promises, Promises.”

The musical opens on Wednesday, Jan. 24, and runs for two weeks at the Waterfront Playhouse, 407 Wall St., Key West. There is a low-priced preview on Jan. 23. All performances start at 8 p.m.

The story follows John Adams as he struggles to push the Continental Congress to vote for independence.

Along with fellow revolutionaries like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, Adams pleads, bullies and reluctantly agrees to go against his better judgment in order to “form a more perfect union.”

The music and lyrics were written

by Sherman Edwards, with the book by Peter Stone. In 1972, it was made into an Oscar-nominated movie.

avier McKnight is making a special trip to the Florida Keys from New York City for a part in the upcoming “1776” production at the Waterfront Playhouse in Key West. For McKnight, a 2014 Marathon High School graduate, it’s a trip home.

He plays the courier. “I have a little scene right before Act I and close with a song,” McKnight said.

McKnight landed the role with a video audition he sent to the Waterfront’s Danny Weathers. The young thespian graduated from the American Musical Dramatic Academy in New York City. Since then, he said, he’s been busy.

“I’ve been auditioning a lot and getting gigs here and there, plus performing in cabarets,” he said. Most recently, he played a dog and a boy in “My Perfect Pet,” a children’s theater performance.

Marathon High School drama club students will be making a special trip to see the Key West show on Feb. 3 – for free.

“The Waterfront Playhouse has been very good to us,” said Lynn Cox, a teacher and drama club advisor. “Personally, I am thrilled that Xavier McKnight — former student, ‘son,’ and friend — is making a debut on the Waterfront Playhouse stage.”

Cox said the students had already planned to see the show, one of her personal favorites, and were doubly excited to learn an alum has been cast.

McKnight said he fully intends to resume his career in New York City after the run of “1776” is finished. “I fly back on February 6,” he said.

Marathon residents have a chance to see the next round of rising stars at the April 13-14 performance of the musical “Legally Blonde” at Marathon High School. Tickets are $10 at the door, and curtain is at 7 p.m.

aygrass Bluegrass Festival’s most anticipated musical act, Billy Strings, is set to rock the amphitheater at Founders Park on Sunday, Jan. 14.

After wrapping up a very busy 2017 with a New Year’s Eve show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, Strings said from his Nashville home, Florida doesn’t sound like a bad change of pace.

William Apostol, also known as Billy Strings, grew up with his father Terry Barber feeding him a healthy diet of bluegrass by legends Doc Watson and Bill Monroe. He picked up how to play guitar – he also plays banjo and mandolin – by ear, and in high school even played in a metal band called To Once Darkened Skies. Metal is still a big influence in his style of play. And his musical palette varies from Canadian death metal act Cryptopsy to Grateful Dead.

It was six years ago when Strings set out to make it playing bluegrass music, and by early 2016, his passion finally became a viable career option.

“I always knew that my future was in music; it just didn’t seem realistic a few years back,” he said.

“I was burning the candle at both ends working at a hotel and playing gigs. It got to a point where my body said ‘no.’”

So he moved to Nashville and surrounded himself with talent.

“I was trying to find my other three Beatles,” said Strings.

The lineup for the Baygrass festival has Billy Failing on banjo, Florida native Jarrod Walker on mandolin, and filling in on bass, Adam Chaffins. Royal Masat, who

normally handles bass duties, is meditating on a beach somewhere in Thailand, according to Strings.

In September, Strings debuted his album “Turmoil & Tinfoil” and it skyrocketed up the Billboard bluegrass music charts to No. 3.

Strings attributed much of the album’s success to the time he’s dedicated to touring. Strings has been playing about 200 gigs a year for the last four years. With such a busy schedule, he’s only at home for three days at a time before leaving again, but says he appreciates visiting historic venues and sharing the stage with some of the greats.

“Four years ago, I’d be playing for like 10 people on some corner in Vermont. The next time I’d go it’d be 20.

Eventually I was going to back places and it would be in the thousands,” said Strings. “I think that’s been the reason I’ve gotten such good feedback by local DJs and radio stations. I’ve toured every part of the country and put in the time. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 people or 10,000, I’ll try to blow those 10 people’s minds.”

ocal fisherman have prepared 2,600 pounds of grouper to get ready for the 13th annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 13-14, at Bayview Park in Key West. Oh, and 1,200 lobster tails, 550 pounds of stone crab and 110 gallons of conch chowder and lobster bisque soup.

Other delectables for sale include ceviche, sampler platters, key lime pie and more. It’s hosted by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association.

Admission is just $5 and the entry stub can be entered into a raffle to win a $250 basket of seafood.

There will be live entertainment both days — including such headliners as The Regs band and Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton begin-

ning at 11 a.m. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The Key West Seafood Festival began in 2005, in part because of the devastating effect of Hurricane Wilma. The storm swept away the traps of many of the Keys fishermen, leaving them — literally — nothing to do. Local fisherman George Niles was the president of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association at the time.

He and other members decided to use the down time to organize a festival to celebrate the industry, the lifestyle and, most importantly, the food. Now, after Hurricane Irma, it is just as important again to celebrate an industry vital to our community.

The Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association uses the proceeds from the festival for scholarships for the family members of commercial fishermen, as well as to protect the industry and influence fisheries management rules and regulations. The fishermen want everyone to be able to enjoy the bounty of the sea for generations to come.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, REVISITED A case for UCF as No. 1?

The Knights of the University of Central Florida, an actual Division 1 FBS college football team, managed to have an undefeated season and capped it off by defeating SEC power Auburn at the Peach Bowl. They are — with some real justification — claiming the “National Championship.”

They had a Championship Parade at Disney World. They will hang a “National Championship” banner at their stadium in Orlando. And they are doing all the things champions do (like having their coaching staff hired away by a school with deep pockets).

Here are a few reasons for their rationale: 1) unlike “National Champion” Alabama, UCF went undefeated; 2) won their division and their conference; 3) beat Auburn (Alabama’s loss was to Auburn).

Now Alabama definitely played a tougher schedule — more Power Five teams (10 to UCF’s 2), and more top 25 teams. And they simply annihilated Clemson in the semifinal. But they still lost to the team UCF defeated in the Peach Bowl.

Here are a couple of observations: If an undefeated Group of Five team can barely crack the Top 10, much less even get token consideration for a playoff spot, then “College Football” needs to make it clear that half the Division 1 FBS schools will always be ineligible for playoff consideration. Except if your school is named Notre Dame. The whole idea for a playoff system was to eliminate this kind of controversy. And the Playoff

Selection Committee could have done that by including UCF in the final four.

In college football, every victory matters. And there are certain victories that should matter even more, especially division and conference championships. By those standards, Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia belonged in the final four. Had those standards been applied to Alabama, the Tide would not have been able to roll to another “National Championship.”

The second observation is that UCF, despite its schedule and Peach Bowl victory, ascended to no higher than No. 6 in the final AP poll. Four teams with two losses finished higher, but at least UCF managed to garner six first-place votes.

Back in 2007 when I wrote about the (failed) BCS system that ignored Boise State, I suggested that college football adopt an eight-team playoff, which would have likely included any Division 1 FBS team with whatever standard of wins/losses prevailed that particular season. So when a Division 1 FBS team goes undefeated and wins its conference and still can’t even get considered for a playoff berth, it’s understandable why people may have issues with the selection process. And it’s not just UCF players, coaches, and staff — there were six first-place votes for UCF in the AP Poll.

Could the UCF Knights have gone the distance had they been included in the final four? I wish we could have found out, especially after the Peach Bowl win against Auburn. Congratulations to the UCF Knights on their perfect season. Congratulations to the Crimson Tide of Alabama on their two post-season victories against strong Clemson and Georgia teams.

But no congratulations are in order for the college football playoff system. They either need to reformat the system to include deserving teams outside the Power Five … or simply state in advance of next season that no matter how good you may be, there’s no way in hell that a Group of Five team will make the playoffs.

And that will ensure that the “National Championship” will again in the future be surrounded by quotation marks or denoted with an asterisk.

his year’s Island Boat Show features fishing seminars from four of the Keys’ best captains, who will be revealing the tricks and techniques pros use when fishing yellowtail, dolphin, swordfish, shark, tarpon, reef fish and baiting.

Capt. Rich Tudor, one of the more recognizable personalities in the Keys’ fishing scene, said the seminars are a great way to learn some of the methods to catch fish when the guy next to you isn’t.

Alongside Capt. Tom Rowland, the two rank as one of the top competitive inshore saltwater fishing teams around, and together co-host NBC’s “Saltwater Experience” out of Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. Tudor will be conducting seminars all three days of the fundraiser, and will cover a range of topics that include tarpon fishing, yellowtail fishing, and bay and gulf fishing.

His yellowtail seminar can benefit anglers at any experience level.

“Some of the things I’ll be talking about will be which lines and leaders to use, chumming techniques, finding the right locations to fish, and tips on how to catch some of the bigger ones,” said Tudor.

Tudor, whose favorite fish is always the “best available,” said hauling up 25-inch yellowtail snappers is not uncommon.

When pressed for a hint on hooking larger yellowtail, he simply replied, “Guess you’ll just have to attend the seminar.”

Capt. Sam Milazzo is slated to cover swordfish and dolphin fishing.

His discussion will cover topics that include setting the rig, responding to bites, and sealing the deal.

“You have to put your time in,” he said. “Those guys who are constantly putting up pictures of swordfish go constantly. When it comes to fishing, there are so many variables, especially sword fishing.

I was 0 for 40 on hookups before I learned the right techniques.”

He said those techniques will improve anybody’s chances of pulling up a swordfish.

“The way you respond to the bite once you get one can up your catch ratio big-time,” said Milazzo.

Seminars will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 and Sunday, Jan. 14. Seminars will begin at noon and end at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15.
