here is still debris out there, yes, hurricane debris. This isn’t about the hard working people out there removing it or deadlines or grievances — this is about what else can we do with it? Maybe at this point four months later, we should think about it a little differently, a little more creatively.

So we asked locals…

What else could we do to get rid of the debris?

“I would make one big giant collage,” said Marty Higgins.

“There was a float in the Fantasy Fest Parade that used debris,” said Susan Mitchell. “Using it as parade floats or to make furniture or art would be pretty cool but really we just need a competent, good government to clear it and keep us safe.”

Marathon mayor to run in District 2 SARA MATTHIS

arathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron filed papers Monday to seek a seat on the Monroe County Commission. She will campaign for the District 2 seat currently held by George Neugent, who is retiring after 20 years of public service.

“The first thing I want to do is reassure all of Marathon that I will continue to serve our city’s needs and interests as I campaign for the county seat,” she said. “I think this is an opportunity to serve a broader section of the community in the Keys.”

Coldiron said she wants to continue to focus on the Keys as a place where families can raise their children while also balancing the needs of the environment and tourism.

“I believe Marathon is the heart of the Keys, but I also believe that the other parts of the Keys need to be just as strong,” she said.

On Monday, Neugent endorsed Coldiron’s candidacy.

“I don’t think that I know of anyone, and I’ve served with at least 14 different commissioners, who have prepared themselves as Michelle has to move into this position,” Neugent Michelle Coldiron said. “She understands the role of an elected official in a legislative position.

She brings integrity and public service to the table and she has the energy and vibrancy to do a great job.”

Coldiron is married to Greg Coldiron and has one adult daughter, Mallory, who also lives in Monroe County.

In August, Coldiron bought a home on the other side of Overseas Highway in Marathon to meet the districting requirements for eligibility. She was elected to the Marathon City Council in 2016. She plans to fulfill her three-year term and, if elected to the Monroe County Commission, assume that seat one week later.

While he intends to step down from public service, Neugent said he has no desire to retire.

“Retirement is the devil’s workshop,” he laughed. “I don’t need a job but I want a job.”

He said he has been approached by some businesses and nonprofits, possibly to be a consultant. “I’m going to keep my options open, but I certainly want to continue to help unincorporated Monroe County and the municipalities continue their recovery from Hurricane Irma.”

One other candidate has filed for the seat with the Monroe County Elections Supervisor: Charles Weitzel (R).

Lenore Baker withdrew from the race earlier this week and John Baker left a voice message with the Weekly announcing his intention to withdraw.

Charles “Chuck” Weitzel is a certified public accountant and property owner who lives on Big Coppitt Key, also within the district 2 geographical boundaries. He said he owns a percentage of Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island. While he has never held elected office, he said he has served as the Worshipful Master at three local Masonic lodges.

“I’m looking for another challenge,” he said. “I think I can put some of my financial talents to use with my CPA background to help make decisions that affect all homeowners and residents for years to come.”

Weitzel said he moved to the Keys from the Philidelphia area to take advantage of the quality of life, and time spent on the water fishing and diving. He bought property in 1980 in Key West and Charles Weitzel moved to the Keys fulltime in 1995.

“I want to protect the Florida Keys; it’s the reason I’m here,” he said. He also said he is currently searching for a campaign manager who understands the political process. “I am not a politician. What I am is someone who is good at setting goals and objectives, meeting them, working hard.”

THE MUSIC MAN LARRY BAEDER SCORES HIS FIRST MUSICAL

arry Baeder is pretty synonymous with the Key West music scene. There isn’t a bar, backyard or festival where Baeder hasn’t strummed his guitar for the past 26 years. Having been born in Kansas City, his roots are blues and jazz but he also has a proper New England education from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Baeder’s legendary resume includes playing alongside James Montgomery, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, James Taylor and Carly Simon. Baeder is old school, a musician’s musician.

Now, for the past year and a half, Baeder has taken on his newest challenge with

friend, Ben Harrison, writing and composing the original musical “Undying Love,” debuting Valentine’s Day at The Studios of Key West.

Baeder said, “It was so far out of my comfort zone I jumped at the chance.” This was Baeder’s first musical but like his music, he knew to be subservient to the art. “He who hears the music is more important than he who plays the music,” he said. “I’ve played everything from blues, to country, to polka.

I pride myself on being versatile.” The biggest challenge was telling a story over time, not just in one song, and always focusing on the lyrics. Also, the play is set in the 1930s, demanding a certain genre of music. But for all of his experience, let alone thousands of albums he has played on, Baeder is not past being nervous with his first theatrical debut. “It’s a musical; if it’s not good, people are going to look at me.”

I get to work at my craft without being on the road and a great sense of community among our musical family.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Being a father to my 12-yearold twins Max and Julia.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Batman. I dig the car.

What is your nerdiest passion? Old black and white movies. Reading.

What is your most treasured possession?

The love of my children.

If invisible what would you do in Key West?

Eat at a lot of restaurants that I can’t afford (sounds gross, but what the heck).

What is your greatest fear? I’m afraid that I’m not real. I want so hard to be good at what I do.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Wine.

On what occasion do you lie? Me? I never Lie! Other than music, what would be a secret dream job? I have my secret dream job. But a Major League pitcher might be good.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Ben Franklin; I think he’d be a hoot. Or Louis Armstrong!

HOW THE SHELL GAME WORKS

an I ask you a question?”

“I have a sample for you.”

“I have something for your eyes.”

“Can I show you something?”

These are the questions — or more like hooks — heard from nicely dressed, attractive, young, mostly international sales associates from doorways on Duval Street. They are offering samples of skin creams or bits of soap at one of the now nine “cosmetic” shops littering downtown Key West. Their goal: to get customers into the store and sell their product.

The problem isn’t the commerce, but the cosmetic stores’ history of city ordinance violations and documented unscrupulous pricing and sales tactics: mainly, the exploitation of Key West’s vital tourist industry, targeting cruise ship passengers and senior citizens, mostly women.

For the past six years these shops have been on the rise and their practices are reminiscent of Key West’s battle with T-shirt shops in the mid-’80s. The T-shirt shops blighted the community with profanity-laden window displays and misrepresentation of pricing.

“These kind of shops change the face of Duval and sacrifice the reputation of Key West,” said Commissioner Jimmy Weekley. “The overall effect is tourists feel ripped off after coming to Key West, and it adversely affects the honest businesses, especially if potential customers are racing past stores to avoid the barkers in the doorway.”

Now, Key West is reacting to the next generation of shell game shops.

The problem came to light back in spring 2015 when an elderly, mentally ill woman was charged a whopping $40,000 for face creams, and retired Ohio newspaper publisher Bruce Mitchell stepped into action. Mitchell, who had just moved here permanently after visiting for decades, was outraged after reading about the incident.

He felt compelled to picket the shops with “Rip Off Stores” signs until they agreed to return the money. Retired business man Tevis Wernicoff decided

to join him and the duo began the Rapid Response Rip Off Team, responding to customer complaints, working with code enforcement, going before the city commission and advocating for refunds which so far has totaled more than $57,000. These two said they are definitely mad as hell and not going to take it any more.

The biggest offense is the “samples” the stores offer, for which customers are later charged without notice of cost before purchase; the result can be thousands of dollars. The sales tactic is to first get the customer in the shop, then apply a sample product. Often the product can appear to work; then the goal becomes to introduce more products. “I have something for your eyes,” is often a great hook for women and their achilles heel, crow’s feet. Sales people then quote large prices such as $5,000 for a product, then lower or maintain that price depending on the reaction of the customer. And if the customer decides to purchase the product, the sample could be added as an additional cost, racking up outrageous totals. If the customer refuses to pay, then there is the threatening of police involvement, which no tourist, foreign or domestic, who has just a few hours in Key West wishes to endure. So they pay.

“This is not unlike the Dead Sea Scam that was brought to light around the world a few years ago,” — Bruce Mitchell, of the Rapid Response Rip Off Team.

“Not one of these shops hasn’t broken an ordinance. They are amazingly aggressive, forcing their employees to work almost all on commission, making them desperate,” said Mitchell, who estimates there are more than 100 employees within the shops. Mitchell has spoken to three informants/employees and learned these young sales people are commonly here on overstayed tourist visas and do not make pay without sales. Also, the shops tend to change ownership quickly, making it difficult to track down the culprits, according

1 to Mitchell. But he is equally aggressive about threatening to picket shops if owners do not sign a notarized consent form, vowing to return money and practice ethical business. Owners must agree to a 30-day return policy and store owners must actually accept the returns. (Mitchell has learned that they often refuse to sign UPS or Fed Ex forms in order to refuse return of payment.) Also, they must follow city ordinance, disclosing sales costs prior to purchase; not smoke or throw cigarette butts on the street, grab or touch customers; and lastly, any purchase over $1,000 must require owner authorization.

Do these forms of consent work?

They are a stopgap at least.

The City Commission has begun to address the issue, with overwhelming support from the commissioners and City Attorney’s office at the last commission meeting. As with the T-shirt shops, Weekley said, “We need to be on it and find ways to legislate and create ordinances.”

What’s with the soap? Who wants a sample of unwrapped, colorful soap, presented bite-sized on doilies on a caterer’s tray?

It is a tactic to draw customers into the store, offering to wrap the soap, or offering unwitting passersby water to rinse out their mouths, after – yes – they have eaten the soap. Both scenarios get people in the door and then the real sales pitch begins.

Event raises needed funding for Zonta

n October 2016, a winter storm washed the Pier House Goes Pink fundraiser for Key West Zonta away, and the October 2017 event had to be postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

“We knew we needed to give the community a little more time to heal,” said Key West Zonta President Mechelle Burgohy about the event, rescheduled for this Thursday.

The concert/fashion show is usually held in October to correspond with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and kicks off Zonta’s ABC Walk at Higgs Beach. “The walk didn’t do as well this year as in the past, but we knew money needed to be shifted to hurricane relief,” she said.

The money raised from the events helps local women’s health services, like Zonta’s local heart health initiative, free mammograms for uninsured or underinsured local women, and education projects for Key West High School graduates and Florida Keys Community College nursing students.

Things that haven’t changed: 10 breast cancer survivors will be showcasing local fashions at 6 p.m., and the Prime Movers will be rocking out on the beach until 8:30 p.m.

Local fashions will be modeled from Islestyle, Mix Mercantile, Lilly Pulitzer, Peach, Fairvilla, and Isle Style. Isle Style is also providing a makeup artist for the models. “Come wiggle your toes in the sand and watch the sunset,” said Burgohy.

Starting at 8:30 a.m., Pier House’s spa will be offering discounted services with all the proceeds going to the Zonta Club. And, the $10 entrance fee will include all the entertainment and heavy appetizers as well as happy hour prices on drinks, including the Pier House’s signature “Pink Drink.”

In the past, the service group has collected lightly used or new bras to be donated.

NO MORE CASH DEPOSITS? BANK OF AMERICA POLICY STARTLES SOME LOCALS

ank of America instituted a new policy in December. Namely, it won’t accept cash deposits from a third party. For example, it would be impossible for a mother or father to deposit any amount of cash into an adult son or daughter’s account without being a cosigner on the account.

“It’s done to reduce the risk from cash transactions involving people not authorized on an account,” said Matthew Dailey, a spokesperson for Bank of America. He did not provide an example of a specific risk.

There are six Bank of America branches in the Keys — two in Key West, and one each in Marathon, Tavernier, Key Largo and Ocean Reef. According to online reports, Chase and Wells Fargo banks are taking similar steps. Other local banks are not.

First State Bank CEO Karen Sharp said banking practices are changing because of technology, but some of the larger institutions seem to be forcing changes to customer behavior.

“What we like to do at First State Bank is to add more delivery channels to our customers that are more convenient, but not restrict them,” said Sharp. “It may be more convenient for our customers to use a mobile banking smartphone app that lets them make a deposit on Sunday, or drop by the branch on Tuesday and do it in person. Having choices, that’s what is important for us to offer our customers.”

While Bank of America still accepts other methods of third-party transfers into accounts — mobile payment transfers, checks or money orders — the cash deposits are no longer accepted. Because there is no dollar limit on the cash deposit, it’s possible some banks are seeking ways to lessen the burdens institutions face when dealing with cash, whether that’s extra security measures or even the regularity of armored transport. In the past, some major banks have created new revenue streams by making drive-through services free, while charging a fee for the very same lobby services.

First State Bank allows cash deposits from third parties, especially when it comes to “charity” accounts set up to benefit individuals facing a medical crisis, or nonprofits during the holidays. Naturally, neither the bank nor the account holders wish to publicize the account numbers, for fear of fraud, and so the public wishing to donate can simply approach a teller.

“We set up hundreds of those,” said First State Bank’s Angie Walterson.

Those who wish to deposit cash into a First State Bank personal account are best served by having not only the account holder’s name, but also the account number. In cases of a very common name — John Smith, for example — the banks

$9,999.00 The “$9,999.00” rule has nothing to do with the newest banking trend about disallowing cash deposits and therefore triggering a report, or an investigation, into a cash deposit of more than $10,000. That rule, instituted in 1970, generates a “completely innocuous” Customer Transaction Report (CTR), according to a local banking official. The trouble arises, she said, when a customer attempts to disguise the cash infusion by making multiple deposits at various branches, or some other type of chicanery. That can instigate a SAR — a Suspicious Activity Report. It’s the nature of the deposit, not just the amount, that regulators investigate. “No one cares about an $11,000 deposit,” she said.

and the depositors want to ensure accuracy. And sometimes customers have more than one account, or an account deemed “dormant” from lack of activity.

There’s one other legitimate reason for banks not to accept cash deposits — “money mules.” Just like “drug mules,” these people are witting or unwitting dupes in a money-laundering scheme. This is more prevalent in Europe, although it has popped up in the U.S. It’s more common that this a completely online transaction, although some mules will visit banking centers to deposit or withdraw cash that is then forwarded to the crime lords. Here, scammers usually target either university students on a temporary visa or those who respond to “work at home” job advertisements. The scammers require personal banking account numbers. Willing or informed participants provide the information and keep a percentage of the deposit.

Unwilling participants could provide their banking information and have a personal account completely cleaned out.

“Caveat emptor” applies not only to selecting the bank with the best practices and services, but also to arming oneself against the increasingly savvy tech scams that are abundant.

“Money Mules” are witting or unwitting dupes in a moneylaundering scheme, increasingly common in online transactions in Europe.

FISHERMEN READY MOUNTAIN OF GROUPER FOR SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

ocal fisherman have prepared 2,600 pounds of grouper to get ready for the 13th annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 1314, at Bayview Park in Key West. Oh, and 1,200 lobster tails, 550 pounds of stone crab and 110 gallons of conch chowder and lobster bisque soup.

Other delectables for sale include ceviche, sampler platters, key lime pie and more. It’s hosted by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association.

Admission is just $5 and the entry stub can be entered into a raffle to win a $250 basket of seafood.

There will be live entertainment both days — including such headliners as The Regs band and Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton beginning at 11 a.m. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The Key West Seafood Festival began in 2005, in part because of the devastating effect of Hurricane Wilma.

The storm swept away the traps of many of the Keys fishermen, leaving them — literally — nothing to do. Local fisherman George Niles was the president of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association at the time.

He and other members decided to use the down time to organize a festival to celebrate the industry, the lifestyle and, most importantly, the food. Now, after Hurricane Irma, it is just as important again to celebrate an industry vital to our community.

The Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman’s Association uses the proceeds from the festival for scholarships for the family members of commercial fishermen, as well as to protect the industry and influence fisheries management rules and regulations. The fishermen want everyone to be able to enjoy the bounty of the sea for generations to come.

‘1776’ comes to Waterfront

O

ne of the largest and most challenging productions ever undertaken locally debuts this month at the Waterfront Playhouse.

Twenty-five actors and nine musicians will take to the stage of the Waterfront to present the musical “1776.” It will be directed by Danny Weathers, with Vincent Zito acting as musical director and conductor.

“As I was putting the season together last year, I kept thinking the show was too big, too much of a risk,” Weathers said. “But the words coming out of these men who lived almost 250 years ago had such resonance and impact, especially in our bitterly divided times, that I ultimately felt it was too important not to do.”

The musical recounts the summer of 1776 and the gathering of the Founding Fathers – and their bickering, wasting time and refusing to compromise – before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“1776” premiered on Broadway 50 years ago to glowing reviews and multiple awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, over “Hair” and “Promises, Promises.” The musical opens on Wednesday, Jan. 24, and runs for two weeks at the Waterfront Playhouse, 407 Wall St., Key West. There is a low-priced preview on

Jan. 23. All performances start at 8 p.m.

The story follows John Adams as he struggles to push the Continental Congress to vote for independence. Along with fellow revolutionaries like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, Adams pleads, bullies and reluctantly agrees to go against his better judgment in order to “form a more perfect union.”

The music and lyrics were written by Sherman Edwards, with the book by Peter Stone.

In 1972, it was made into an Oscar-nominated movie.

here are three inevitable rites of passage for a young man in the state of Georgia, which are circumcision, baptism and the irrevocable choice of being BRITT a University of MYERS Georgia or Georgia Tech fan. However, University of Georgia fans dominate the state, and their religion is football. They bark in public.

They memorize decades of players and marquee moments “between the hedges” and even name their children (and pets) after the likes of Vince Dooley, Herschel Walker and Fran Tarkenton. Yet for anyone who is familiar with the Bulldog faithful, they understand the sectarian affinity that

UGA fans attach to their school, which consequently led to numerous bar fights, divorces and exclusions from family reunions during my young adult life. To say the least, the “Dawgs” and Yellowjackets hate one another.

So why in the hell was I pulling for Georgia in Monday’s college football National Championship loss to Alabama? To admit this is just like the time I admitted I “kind of” like Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” at the bar. You can never take that back. And once it leaves your lips, you lose a few friends immediately following the admission.

In fact, before Monday, I would have probably cheered for North Korea if they were playing the University of Georgia in anything outside of human rights.

That being said, there was an all too familiar feeling looming in my gut as I watched the Bulldogs squander a 13-0 halftime lead to Alabama. Georgia, which has not celebrated a football title since 1980, had seemingly aligned the stars. They reached the championship game in historic fashion, defeating Oklahoma in two overtimes to reach the final, which was being played just 45 minutes from their campus in the friendly confines of Atlanta. Most of all, the perennial heavyweights from Alabama looked dazed and startled walking into the half with a goose egg on the scoreboard.

But then it began. A bad call nullified a blocked punt and potential touchdown for the Dawgs. A pass bounced off a Bama defender’s head for a crucial interception. And a blatant face mask call was missed and the momentum swung to the Tide. And give credit to Alabama, they stepped up in the most crucial of moments. But in the end, another Georgia sports team came up short after blowing a lead and ample opportunities in the biggest of games.

And then it hit me. I wasn’t pulling for the Bulldogs. I was pulling for my home state. My heart hadn’t fully healed from the Atlanta Falcons’ epic meltdown in the previous Super Bowl, where the birds squandered a 28-3 lead to the Patriots in what is now considered one of the greatest choke jobs of all time. And watching the Bulldogs lose on another grand stage was like

watching a distant cousin get beat up by a bully. You may not like that particular cousin, but he’s still family and it reflects on us all.

The state of Georgia lives and breathes sports. It ranks fourth amongst states with current NFL players (just behind Florida, California and Texas) and pumps out myriad NBA and MLB stars. It also serves as one of the most fertile recruiting grounds for NCAA sports. Yet to hear Georgia residents speak about their athletic exploits is similar to Wile E. Coyote boasting about his chase for the elusive Road Runner. The passion is there.

The results are not.

Since the University of Georgia last won the NCAA football crown in 1980, only one other college, Georgia Tech, has a Division I football title, which came in the dubious form of co-champions in 1990. The Atlanta Braves boast the state’s only professional sports title back in 1995. But they also lost the Series in ’91, ’92, ’96 and ’99 — not to mention a decade of disappointing playoff loses with one of the greatest pitching staffs in MLB history. The Falcons have reached the Super Bowl twice, falling each time, in ’99 and 2017. And the Atlanta Hawks — well, let’s just say they traded Atlanta’s biggest star in history, Dominque Wilkins, for an ailing Danny Manning in 1994 and the basketball gods have never forgiven their sins (they still have 0 NBA Final appearances).

Maybe it’s in the red clay or the towering Georgia pines, but the state of Georgia is starved terrain in search of championship nourishment. The Bulldogs’ most recent defeat is a culmination of disappointing finishes in the Peach State. This isn’t to sound unappreciative, as there have been triumphant divisional titles and conference milestones — but history judges sports merits on the finished product and the state of Georgia has little to show.

And while my son, who was born in the Florida Keys, will have his own crosses to bear with the Miami Dolphins and Marlins — or perhaps the Hurricanes, Gators or Noles — I have spared him the 40 years of heartbreak and disappointment that only a Georgia-bred fan can understand, and was reminded of, this past Monday.

This year the seminar’s free Sunday session taking place at The San Carlos Institute from 2 to 5 p.m. will offer a chance not only to hear award-winning writers but also to share the experience of island life.

“Collectively, we wanted to explore literature that is a part of our region,” said the seminar’s director, Arlo Haskell. “But we picked the topic two years ago and who could have predicted the relevance today?”

Open to the public, the Sunday session has proven to be a highlight of the seminar, with intimate access to some brilliant authors.

This year is no exception. As a teen, Mirta Ojito came to America during the 1980 Mariel boat lift exodus from Cuba and went on to become a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist at the New York Times. The boat lift has always been a part of Keys history and Ojito’s success from the day she set foot on Key West has been extraordinary. Also speaking will be Haitian-American

writer Edwidge Danticat, another immigrant who has won numerous awards. Her first novel “Breath, Eyes, Memory” was chosen for Oprah’s book club and she is an active advocate for Haiti and immigration. Writers Esmeralda Santiago from Puerto Rico and Tiphanie Yanique from St. Thomas identify with the devastating impacts of this past hurricane season, from the hardest hit islands.

“Esmeralda Santiago and Tiphanie Yanique will be talking about the reality of the impact,” said Haskell, “and how is it to be an America writer living in places not considered American.”

Lastly, young Jamaican poet Ishion Hutchinson, winner of this year’s National Book Critics Circle Award and a rising poetry star, will speak.

“It’s an opportunity to really learn about our neighbors and how diverse they are, because we are in the Caribbean as well,” said Lynn Kaufelt, who helped found the seminar with husband David Kaufelt. “And we do have a lot to learn.”

The seminar will also welcome renowned author Jamaica Kincaid for its workshops. A native of the island of Antigua, Kincaid’s themes of family and anti colonialism have put her at the forefront of Caribbean writers for the past three decades with her short stories, novels and essays.

he third annual Island Boat Show is set for Saturday, Jan. 13 through Monday, Jan. 15. The boat show serves primarily as a benefit for Island Christian School, and is the school’s largest fundraiser. Money raised through vendors, sales and silent auction bidding benefits school funding and its scholarships.

In its first two years, the boat show was held at Hawk’s Cay Resort on Duck Key, but because of damage caused to the resort property by Hurricane Irma, the venue had to be changed this year.

After some searching, organizers decided Island Christian School Campus at MM 83.4 bayside was the best alternative.

“When Hawks Cay Resort had to shut down, we had to make a choice. Everyone leading it all got together, and for a moment we debated not doing it,” said Island Christian School founder, Pastor Tony Hammon. “But because nearly $100,000 of our budget comes from the boat show, we

thought it was crucial in our efforts to keeping students, families, and teachers.”

Hammon expects the boat show to return to its original venue in Duck Key in 2019.

This year’s show will feature 10 boat dealers, showcasing more than 50 vessels ranging in build and length. Four of the Keys top fishing guides will hold seminars that will cover topics to include dolphin, shark, yellowtail, tarpon, swordfish, reef fishing, bay and gulf fishing, and winter patch-reef fishing. Half-day fishing trips, resort stays, restaurant gift certificates, motors, engines, and more will be available to bid on during the three-day silent auction. Onsite, more than 20 vendors will be retailing nautical/fishing gear of all types. Hungry guests can sample food from five different vendors, and for kids, organizers have acquired two bounce houses.

Show hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15. Admission is $10.

Baygrass Bluegrass Festival’s most anticipated musical act, Billy Strings, is set to rock the main stage at Founders Park on Sunday, Jan. 14. After wrapping up a very busy 2017 with a New Year’s Eve show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, Strings said from his Nashville home, Florida doesn’t sound like a bad change of pace.

William Apostol, also known as Billy Strings, grew up with his father Terry Barber feeding him a healthy diet of bluegrass by legends Doc Watson and Bill Monroe. He picked up how to play guitar — he also plays banjo and mandolin — by ear, and in high school even played in a metal band called To Once Darkened Skies. Metal is still a big influence in his style of play, as his musical palette varies from Canadian death metal act Cryptopsy to Grateful Dead.

It was six years ago when Strings set out to make it playing bluegrass music, and by early 2016, his passion finally became a viable career option.

“I always knew that my future was in music; it just didn’t seem realistic a few years back,” he said. “I was burning the candle at both ends working at a hotel and playing gigs. It got to a point where I couldn’t do that any more, and my body said ‘no.’”

So he moved to Nashville and surrounded himself with talent.

“I was trying to find my other three Beatles,” said Strings.

The lineup for the Baygrass festival has Billy Failing on banjo, Florida native Jarrod Walker on mandolin, and filling in on bass, Adam Chaffins. Royal Masat, who normally handles bass duties,

is meditating on a beach somewhere in Thailand, according to Strings.

Back in September, Strings debuted his album “Turmoil & Tinfoil” and it skyrocketed up the Billboard bluegrass music charts to No. 3.

Strings attributed much of the album’s success to the time he’s dedicated to touring. Strings has been playing about 200 gigs a year for the last four years. With such a busy schedule, he’s only at home for three days at a time before leaving again, but says he appreciates visiting historic venues and sharing the stage with some of the greats.

“Four years ago, I’d be playing for like 10 people on some corner in Vermont. The next time I’d go it’d be 20.

Eventually I was going back to places and it would be in the thousands,” said Strings. “I think that’s been the reason I’ve gotten such good feedback by local DJs and radio stations. I’ve toured every part of the country and put in the time. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 people or 10,000, I’ll try to blow those 10 people’s minds.”

et ready to pull the guayabera out of the closet, light a cigar, and slam some bones on Saturday, Jan. 20 for the second annual Sunset Rotary Manny Madruga Domino Tournament at Southernmost House in Key West.

“We were friends and leadership classmates,” said Sunset Rotary’s Randy Acevedo, the tournament’s coorganizer with Donny Elomina. “Manny had so much integrity and gave himself to the organizations he was involved in and he is very much missed in Key West.”

Madruga was the Chief Assistant State Attorney when he died in 2016.

The tournament funds Key West Sunset Rotary’s Key West High School scholarship for a student going into a legal field, as well as suicide awareness and prevention organizations.

This year, the tournament will boast 21 tables, rather than the 16 last year. Thirty-six of the 42 team slots have already been filled. “We are organizing a side game to start around 8 p.m. so those eliminated can buy back into a game,” said Acevedo.

Last year, more than $6,000 was raised from the tournament in Madruga’s honor.

Madruga was president of Leadership Monroe County when Mary Stella went through the program and she served on the board with him under his “exceptional leadership.” She plans on playing again this year.

“Playing in that tournament was really a special experience, to see how everyone in the community who loved and respected Manny put it together,” she said. “It was well organized and a lot of fun.”

Although she touts herself as a novice player, only learning how to slam bones a month earlier on a trip overseas, “winning our first three matches and losing to Jon Crane felt really good; we are coming for you this year,” she said.
